Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The Meeting Creek Railway Station was built by the Canadian Northern Railway in 1913.

The Station remains on its original site and today is used to build awareness and educate people of all ages of the vital role rail played throughout Canadian history. Also located on the site is an original grain elevator that was built in 1917. Tours will be offered on August 8 of both the Railway Station and elevator, during the Canadian Northern Railway Family Day event.

The Camrose Heritage Railway Museum and Station and Park will be honouring the rich Scandinavian culture of Camrose and surrounding area with a Tribute to Scandinavian Settlers, on July 6, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

“The focus will be on the history of Daryl Olson’s family,” said Station director Glenys Smith. At 2 p.m.

Daryl will be bringing history alive through his own interpretation of the Olson family’s story.

Displays will be set up throughout the museum and grounds, chronicling early settlement of Norwegian and Swedish Settlers. Be sure to visit the Immigration Display Room on the upper level of the Station to view more artifacts and learn more about an important part of this area’s history.

At 1 p.m. Marie Dreger will be doing a rose malling demonstration and at 3 p.m. tap along to the amazing fiddle playing of Alfie Myhre, as he plucks out tunes on an old family fiddle.

“A light lunch will be available for purchase in the Tea Room,” said Station managing director Norm Prestage. The delicious fare includes meatballs, rice, cabbage, cheese, Lefse and an apple dessert.

Envelope yourself and your children in a wonderful tribute to a heritage that helped shape Camrose and area into the place it is today.

On July 10 the Station is once again hosting Station Garden Tours with Victorian dessert and tea.

Tour times are 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. and are by advanced reservation only.

Get ready to step back to the 1920s on July 13 during the ever popular Summer Garden Party held from 1 until 5 p.m. Dance the Charleston to the beat of the Station Swing Band.

“The Swing Band have been playing this gig, together, for the 18th year,” said Smith. “And we really want to encourage people to come out in costume and get into the spirit of the music and the day.”

Mark Aug. 18 on your calendar, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., to spend with family and friends at the Meeting Creek Railway Station and Linear Park during the Canadian Northern Railway Family Day event.

New this year, this event promises to provide a day filled with family fun, adventure and learning.

“There is going to be horse drawn interpretive wagon ride down the Canadian Northern abandoned rail line,” said Prestage. “Guided tours of the 1913 Station

and 1917 elevators will also be available.”

This is a great opportunity to learn about the important role the rail played in the history of Camrose and surrounding area, by taking a ride on a track motor car of the Alberta Prairie mini-train.

At 11 a.m. stretch your legs and your mind on a guided tour along the Alberta East Central Natural Linear Parks to Edberg (4 km round trip). Examine the flora, grasslands and chance a siting of a prairie bird. In line with the Battle River Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards, Year of the Grouse event hosted in the Battle River area in September of this year, learn more about the grouse and what you can do to help preserve its existence.

The children will be kept entertained as well, with fun activities including sack or three legged races, walking on stilts and stories and songs at the Gazebo by the Station at 2 p.m.

Barbecued hotdogs and hamburgers, homemade desserts and beverages will be available for purchase at the community hall where you can stomp your feet, tap your toes or even swing your partner, if you are so inclined, to some old fashioned memorable tunes.

Spend Family Day at Meeting Creek, meeting and visiting with old and new friends, enjoying family and recalling history.

Drop into the Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park (4407-47 Avenue) during regular season hours, Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and take in the many displays and interpretive signs explaining rail history.

New to the Station this year is a community herb garden, planted in the trough on the south side of the grounds in front of the Victory Garden. Community members are invited to come and help themselves to a variety of organically grown herbs to add that special touch to any meal.

The Station kindly asks that anyone taking advantage of this generous giving, be mindful of other users and treat the garden with respect so it can be enjoyed by many.

In grandma’s garden

By Lisa Kaastra My daughter has been asking about grandma’s garden for weeks now. Actually, it’s more like months.

With the addition of a new family member in just a matter of days, I decided to forgo any kind of bed of vegetables this year, while we adjust to a new pace of life, leaving the gardening adventures for grandma’s plot on the other side of the acreage.

“Strawberries?” my little blonde asks hopefully, raising her eyebrows and hands in question. “Not yet,” I tell her. And her daddy tells her. And her grandma tells her.

“Very soon,” we all assure her. A repeat conversation occurs about the peas. Then back to the strawberries. And perhaps one more double-check about the peas. Evidently, these are by far the most important harvests to come up out of the dirt for our two year old’s consumption.

Nearly every day, our walk brings us past the bird-protected “strawberry barn” to check on the little plants’ progress.

We open the door, go inside, and carefully check out each little mound of dry leaves for signs of life. “Green!” finally comes the cry. “Green! Alive!” I can’t help it. Even I get a little excited about the upcoming berries and their ruby red flesh.

Last week, she spent over an hour with her grandparents, working amongst the piles of dirt. Slowly but surely, she’d gather up soil from one side to the other, confident in her abilities and proud of her chance to “help,” all the while bundled up in a bright red jacket, ear muffs, and too-big finger gloves.

When I later stopped by to check in on the busy bee and her crew, she was radiantly covered in dirt and had pink cheeks.

“Look it, Mommy!” the girl cried, pulling my view back to her as she giggled, excitedly carrying a new pile of dirt.

Lessons in weeds and loose farm animals aside—it looks like it’s going to be a pretty great summer.

Investment made in wetland conservation

A $1 million gift from Pembina Pipeline Corporation is ensuring working landscapes across the Canadian Prairies also work for conservation.

Its investment in Ducks Unlimited Canada’s (DUC) Revolving Land Conservation Program will protect approximately 2,000 acres (809 hectares) of important wetland habitat.

Communities across Alberta and Saskatchewan will benefit from a host of environmental benefits. The joint announcement was made at one of DUC’s conservation project sites located east of Camrose, near Holden.

“Pembina’s generous contribution is a bold and commendable statement about the value they place on sustainability,” said Karla Guyn, CEO for DUC. “We’re fortunate to have partners like Pembina who are stepping forward as conservation leaders and responsible corporate neighbours.”

DUC’s Revolving Land Conservation Program is an innovative and collaborative approach to conservation. It’s especially effective in areas like the prairies where demand for land is high. Through the program, DUC purchases land with high conservation value and restores the wetlands and grasslands on the property. The land is then sold back to producers with a conservation easement placed on the title.

The easement protects the natural habitat, while

allowing subsequent owners of the property to use the land in their operation through haying or grazing.

Funds from the sale of the land provide DUC with the capital to repeat the cycle.

The program is also designed to keep land in the hands of private owners. It supports agricultural interests, while protecting important areas for conservation – delivering both economic and environmental wins.

“Our partnership with DUC is a natural fit,” said Ian Balfour, vice president, Gas Services at Pembina. “It

Check your crop production during growing season

Field scouting throughout the growing season can lead to more successful crop production.

“There are numerous factors that can impact a developing crop,” said Mark Cutts, crop specialist at the Alberta Ag-Info Centre. “Scouting can help producers understand what is occurring in their fields and aid them in making proper management deci-

sions. At this time of the year, for example, producers can evaluate various agronomic components including weed populations and insect pests.”

While watching the growing season, the focus of producers is on weed control. Many fields are currently being sprayed with a herbicide that was selected based on an evaluation of the weed species that were present in the field.

“It is also very important to recognize that scouting after a herbicide application is vital to weed control,” added Cutts.

“Scouting after a herbicide application will show producers if the weeds were adequately controlled. In the majority of cases, producers will find that the chemicals have worked.

However, in certain situations, field scouting may show the weeds were not

properly controlled. Producers can start to evaluate what might have caused the problem.”

A difference in the pattern of weed escapes can indicate poor performance of a herbicide due to environmental conditions or that herbicide resistant weeds may be present.

“If the weeds that escaped the herbicide application are found throughout the entire field,

it can point to limited herbicide effectiveness due to environmental conditions such as low temperatures,” Cutts explained.

“However, if the weeds are in isolated patches, it may be a herbicide resistance issue.”

If unsure of the cause, contact an agronomist or chemical company representative to discuss the possible causes of the weed escapes.

County updates Chamber

Camrose County provided the 2018 annual report to Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce members and guests during the general luncheon meeting on June 5.

Reeve Don Gregorwich began by outlining the general mandate of the County. “In 2018, we tried and were successful in improving our communication and information to our residents and general public. Our goals and our aims are to be transparent and accessible and to provide service to our residents.”

In explaining the County’s efforts to reach out to more residents, Gregorwich indicated they are using more online applications, such as those used for snowplowing requests. “Instead of a resident having to wait until Monday morning to phone to get their driveway plowed after a weekend snowfall, they can go online and the message is transmitted right to the grader operator. In many cases it worked out very well.

More and more we are trying to use social media and access to online services.”

County economics

Gregorwich began by reporting that all the County projects came in on time and on budget, which he attributed to the successful work and dedication of County staff and contractors.

In reporting on the economics of the County, Gregorwich said, “We had 187 development permits resulting in over $100 million in construction and eight of those permits were over $1 million.”

He noted the significant financial impact from the County to Camrose and surrounding communities to include: $7.3 million in salaries and wages, $4.6 million for contracts for services from businesses in the community, $2.8 million for goods and materials from businesses in the community and $3.2 million for transfers of funds to organizations in the community.

Gregorwich provided examples of some of the products and services purchased by Camrose County including engineering services, farm implements, electrical services, vehicles, bottled water, utilities, office supplies and more.

“The County owns $9 million worth of fire fighting equipment that needs to be maintained, insured and replaced over time.”

The County inventory of equipment includes nine fire departments with 21 capital assets including: 11 pumper trucks, three rescue trucks, two snuffer trucks, three water tankers and two support vehicles.

“The County helps to fund five libraries, one in the City of Camrose, but also some in villages. We (financially) support social services including Camrose and District Support Services and Bashaw and District Support Services.

With regards to funding for recreational services Gregorwich reported, “The County financially supports 22 ball diamonds, six outdoor arenas, two natural ice arenas, one artificial ice arena and three curling rinks. That gives an indication of the fact that our outreach is considerable in all areas of our community’s life.”

He indicated that the County is facing some serious financial

challenges as a result of a decision made by the provincial government resulting in a property tax loss of $1.5 million “That is a million and a half dollars of income we are not getting which is about 10 per cent of our total taxation.

That hurts.”

He pointed out the loss of $435,000 tax dollars on property owned by Trident Exploration (declared bankruptcy) and how that number was further compounded by $130,000 with the provincial government’s request for the County to pay the school taxes on that amount. “That happened after our budget was set,” noted Gregorwich.” We have a contingency set in our budget but this takes a serious chunk out of that contingency.”

Gregorwich indicated that the County’s reaction to the downturn in the oil business has been, and continues to be, searching out and replacing industry.

Partnerships

Reeve Gregorwich informed the crowd of the many partnerships the County has developed such as Battle River Watershed Alliance and Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce.

He also stated the County is working closely with organizations such as the Rural Municipalities of Alberta organization and Battle River Alliance for Economic Development to lobby government and attract industry to Camrose County.

“We are bringing in water through the Capital Region Southwest Water Services Commission, through our connection in Armena to the industrial park in Ervick.

This will offer a lot of opportunities for entrepreneurs. It is close proximity to the airport, highway and high load corridor. We believe it will be a valuable place for industry to locate with one of the biggest aspects being access to a reasonably priced, stable supply of water.”

He also commented on the large agricultural contribution in Camrose County. “Our agriculture producers are among the best in the province with a variety of production. We have some very large farms out there.”

He spoke about the success of the farm direct program including 70 farms that market direct to consumers. “The County has actively supported them and help them organize and grow and we are the first county in Alberta to do that.”

Looking ahead

Gregorwich reported briefly on the focus of the County for the remainder of 2019. ‘The County promises residents to work with governments in as positive a manner as we possibly can.

“We will continue on with our roadwork projects within the County, that is very important to us,” said Gregorwich. In total Camrose County is responsible for the upkeep of 1,600 miles of roads.

“And we will continue to provide services to our residents just as we have in the past.”

Communities celebrate Canada Day

County communities are gearing up to celebrate Canada Day with a host of fun activities.

Tofield will be celebrating Canada Day with some festivities, starting with a pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. on Main Street at the Community Hall. A parade will march down Main Street beginning at 11 a.m. followed by cake and coffee at the IGA. Fill in the after-

noon with Gymkana by the Katchemut Creek Family Horse Club, face painting and Inflatable Fun/Backyard Balloons on the fairgrounds.

The Tofield Museum will be open and welcoming visitors to check out the historical stories and displays from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.

Rounding out the evening is the free family movie, Dumbo at 7 p.m. at the Tofield Community Hall.

Then the evening skies will

be lit up with a fireworks display to music at around 11 p.m. at the fairgrounds.

Daysland Canada Day Celebrations include a Fireman’s pancake breakfast at the Fire Hall, live entertainment, cake cutting in the park, bouncy castle and kids activities, along with the annual Cars in the Park Show and Shine.

For the car enthusiasts Alliance will also be featuring a Show and Shine on July 1, Canada Day.

Volunteers sought for health advisory council

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is recruiting new volunteer members to the Yellowhead East Health Advisory Council (HAC) from the communities of Dewberry, Flagstaff County, Lamont, Legal, Myrnam and Vermilion River County.

Council membership offers an opportunity to provide a local perspective on area and province wide health care services.

“Our council has worked hard to bring the community perspective to Alberta Health Services and to share AHS initiatives and local services with our communities,” said Patricia Johnston, former chair and current member of Yellowhead East HAC. “I’m proud of the work we’ve done.”

Health Advisory Councils consist of a maximum of 15 volunteer members, all of whom are passionate about health care services, big-picture thinkers, eager to engage members of their community to learn what healthcare services are working well and where improvements can be made and interested in participating in dialogue with AHS, that will lead to creative solutions to improve healthcare services across Alberta.

Advisory councils report to the AHS board of directors and meet with AHS leadership four to five times per year. Members learn of AHS initiatives and discuss information gathered from communities about healthcare priorities that impact them.

Aleesa Morrison, from Bashaw 4-H, won the intermediate live judging at the Camrose District 4-H show on June 4. Congratulating Aleesa on behalf of Edberg Crop Management was Tracy Holt.

Tessa Morrison from Bashaw 4-H had the junior champion female at the Camrose District 4-H female show June 3. Presenting the championship ribbon to Tessa is Tracy Kushnerick of Spruce View Acres. Tessa also won the intermediate reserve champion showman award.

Lyndsey Smith, from Armena 4-H, had the show’s reserve junior champion female. Lyndsey received the ribbon from sponsor Brimacombe Farms. Ruby Fehlauer of Armena 4-H won the junior reserve champion showman award.

Lack of moisture adds stress

Camrose District 4-H Beef Clubs

Although we have had sufficient moisture in the Camrose area, some places in the province have had less rain.

“A lack of sufficient moisture stresses plants, and that is certainly apparent this spring,” said Karin Lindquist, forage and beef specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

“Plants that do not get enough moisture are usually stunted and are forced to set seed earlier than normal. Management considerations—for hay production especially—when faced with such issues are timely.”

All plants strive to produce seed regardless of present conditions. Plants experiencing stress from lack of moisture are at risk of dying. As a result, they need to produce seeds as soon as they possibly can. Once they have accomplished this stage, they go dormant, usually for the remainder of the year.

Lindquist points out that it is a distinct disadvantage to allow plants to reach seed set when growing a forage stand for hay or pasture. “Even when moisture is adequate later in the growing season, it is unlikely the mature plants will regrow.”

If any regrowth does occur, it will primarily be from tillers. “Alfalfa plants that are cut when they reach 30 to 50 per cent bloom—one plant with an open blossom compared with three to five other plants—or grasses when they are almost ready to flower, will be encouraged to restart regrowth.”
