Terry Vickers, coordinator of Recycle with Centra Cam, is proud of his team and the work they do to contribute to a greener planet.

The efforts of the staff, facility and funding behind Recycle with Centra Cam can be directly attributed to keeping a mini-mountain of product out of the local landfills every year. The scene above displays just one day's volume of cardboard left at the depot. In 2018, 1,140 metric tonnes of cardboard brought to Recycle with Centra Cam were able to be saved for new uses, thanks to this well-utilized program. On a busy Saturday, 12 bales of compressed cardboard will be saved. A record day last December saw a whopping 21 bales of cardboard being saved from area landfills. In just five months this year, 733 bales of cardboard have already been recycled. Recycle with Centra Cam staff are equally busy in other areas. Consider these impressive year-end 2018 numbers for other product lines which are handled. • 270 metric tonnes of flyers and newspapers  •  88 metric tonnes of office waste • 67 metric tonnes of mixed waste • 13 metric tonnes of other printed matter •  7 metric tonnes of phonebooks To Camrose Homes To Rural Homes Who Can I Count On? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6 *partial coverage Recycle with Centra Cam also handles Tues. Two families ventured to an amazing location for an “awesome family adventure!” The Millington’s and the Ashtons experienced Wat Rong Knun, better known as the White Temple, a Buddhist temple in Chiang Rai, Thailand, where this photo was taken. In addition to rounding out the trek with some of the finest in reading material, they enjoyed the sights and sounds of monkeys, elephants, and the most beautiful beaches.

The better angels of our nature

“We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.” Who said that? US President Abraham Lincoln during his inaugural address in March 1861. He was trying to stave off Civil War. The first Civil War shots were fired in April 1861. By the time the war officially ended, out of a population of 31 million, over 620,000 soldiers had died along with uncounted other adults and children. The US was torn apart. Traces of that legacy are still visible today. What does this have to do with us? So why is Abraham Lincoln’s fervent plea relevant in Canada in 2019–on July 2, the day after Canada Day? We’re nowhere near a civil war. But amidst yesterday’s celebrations of the blessings and achievements of our country, it feels like resentment and divisiveness are growing in our province and our country. I am feeling it. I don’t just mean I’m feeling it around me and in social media and mass media. I’m feeling those emotions too. Not healthy. I’m old enough to know that, however justified, resentment and “being against” are poisonous to the people feeling it. Resentment and “against-ness” are also poisonous to families, organizations, communities, provinces and countries in which groups of resentful people live. Words and actions grounded in resentment never end happily. As both Jesus and Abraham Lincoln said, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” A hopeful possibility There is hope. And “Better Angels” suggests the germ of one step in a pathway. “Better Angels” is the name of a program some wise people in the US have begun. I’ve learned about it from a friend who’s directly involved. The website says, “Better Angels was born in response to the crisis of polarization—a growing crisis that hampers government, destroys trust, degrades public discussion, fosters isolation, and harms personal relationships.” It also says, “We bring Reds and Blues together to find common ground.” Better Angels offers “Principles for De-polarization” for citizens, civic groups, faith organizations, media, politicians and scholars. Their principles for citizens are: Try to understand the other side’s point of view, even if we don’t agree with it. Engage those we disagree with, looking for common ground and ways to work together. Support political ideas and leaders that bring us together rather than divide us.

I just wanted to say thank you for the great ad. We had a very good turnout at my Comedy Show and Book Launch on June 21. I was so surprised to see so many people I know (from 20 plus years ago)! I believe placing an ad in The Booster was the reason why. Good work. Donna Lynne Erickson, Camrose Universe law

Lack of knowledge of the physical behaviour of the universe, that we are so lucky to be a part of, will ultimately cause our extinction, a tragedy far beyond any tragedy that one could imagine. I am concerned here about climate disruption due to the burning of fossil fuel. One must understand the simple physical laws involved. Burning fossil fuel increases the climate’s temperature, since the CO2 produced by the carbon in the fuel blocks part of the infrared radiation of the heat that must radiate back into outer space to maintain the heat balance

of the sun’s radiation on earth. As earth’s oceans heat up, feedback mechanisms come into play. The hot oceans evaporate more vapour, which is a very potent green-house gas. As the heating increases, methane, a very potent greenhouse stored in the melting permafrost is released. In addition, the melting ice caps don’t reflect the sun light which is absorbed and contributes more to the heating. The result is run-a-way heating and the melting of the frozen hydrate of methane at the bottom of the ocean, which will be disastrous. Shortly after that, the oceans will stop circulating because of lack of convection caused by the normally cold polar oceans circulating with the tropical oceans mixing in oxygen. As the oxygen disappears and the oceans stagnate the oxygen hating microbes, the original life forms that existed for billions of years, will take over and emit their normal waste gas, hydrogen sul-

phide, an extreme poison to oxygen breathing animals causing mass extinction which of course will include humanity. Is this really what anyone would be happy with? Some people, professing ignorance, say there is no problem, or that it is not possible for human activity to have any affect, or it is just nature, or it is God’s will, or our population and emissions are too small to matter. They spout this ignorance, not because they believe it, but because they don’t care what happens to future people or even present people. They only care about their own affluence, or perhaps they only care about their obsolete religious beliefs. What can we do? At the moment, all we can do is wait for the federal election and vote for a party that promises to put into effect proportional representation, so every one is represented. But don’t depend on the Liberals. Arnold Baker, Camrose

Steps in a process

In “Red-Blue” workshops hosted by Better Angels, an equal number of “Red” (Republican) and “Blue” (Democratic) participants gather together. Wisely, they do not begin by talking about the specific areas in which they disagree. Rather, in the first phase, each Red and Blue sub-group discusses, “What do we think the other group thinks about us?” Then the two groups gather together and exchange the results of their discussion. Inevitably, some of the responses get nods of recognition, some responses are surprising to the other group, and some responses get laughter. In the second phase, each Red and Blue group discusses, “What do we wish the other group would understand about us?” The two groups come together again and exchange the results of their conversations. And then what? And the benefit is… According to my friend who’s directly involved, in the new “climate” that’s been created, the Reds and Blues are able to have a different conversation. They may never agree, never become friends, never even like or trust each other, but they can have a conversation that gets somewhere useful. In our world, our country, our province, our work and our personal lives are many challenges. Some are lifethreatening. Few can be resolved on our own as individuals or as sub-groups. Using processes that can help us work together–even with people we don’t like or trust–could save the world. ***

I’d love to hear from you! Send a note about this column or suggestions for future columns to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com and I’ll happily reply within one business day.

In an effort to assist in the success of elementary school students the Camrose and Area Early Childhood Development Coalition once again packed up Preschool Readiness bags on June 26. Volunteers gathered together at the A Parent Link Centre at Camrose and District Support Services, to stuff brightly purple canvas bags full of materials and resources that are meant to encourage children and families to explore areas of development. Items in the bag include a ball of Play-Doh, lacing beads and scissors to assist children with fine and gross motor skills, conversation cards to encourage communication in the family and tweak imagination and bubbles which can be used to practice breathing techniques, utilize muscles while chasing the bubbles and once again develop imagination. “The focus of the Coalition is celebrating, educating and advocating the importance of early childhood,” said Camrose and Area Early Childhood Development Coalition coordinator Jolene Doig. The statistics state that one in

four kindergarten-aged children within the Coalition area experience some degree of difficulty in one of the following areas: physical health and well-being, emotional maturity, language, communication and cognitive skills and general knowledge. The numbers are what makes the work the Coalition is doing to improve early childhood development so vital. “The Coalition puts Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster together these bags of readiness for three- Camrose and Area Early Childhood Development year-olds in our com- Coalition coordinator Jolene Doig, left, and member Kari Cameron helped pack 200 Preschool Readiness munities,” noted Doig. bags to be distributed throughout Camrose and area. “They include resources area and looks forward to continuing to help children and their caregivers the successful initiative in the future. get ready for school by engaging in For more information on the developmentally appropriate activi- Coalition, visit the Facebook page or ties.” contact Jolene at A Parent Link CenTo date, the Coalition has distribut- tre at #3 Community Centre, 4516-54 ed over 1,000 bags within Camrose and Street, telephone 780-672-0141.

Tofield UFA Petroleum Agency. A few years later, the Wetaskiwin UFA Petroleum Agency became available, and with this addition to his responsibilities, business became a little more complicated. Trevor has demonstrated steadfast and calm leadership operating all three agencies and is a pillar of the respective communities. UFA petroleum area manager, Phil Cutts said, “Trevor is one of the best agents I have seen. He empowers and motivates his employees and together they provide outstanding customer service, in an environment where safety is priority one. Camrose was selected as the second site in the area to distribute a product and this past spring, began distributing the product with favourable customer feedback.” In addition to being a busy agent, Trevor is also a devoted family man and he and his wife Lindsay welcomed their second daughter this past spring. The couple are always finding ways to give back to the community.

Battle River Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards and Events. The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards is an organization aimed at recognizing and celebrating Alberta’s rich culture by honouring its most accomplished artists and supporting professional artists in the early stages of their careers. Battle River was chosen to host this year’s events and in keeping with the overall mandate of celebrating, not only artists but the natural world around us, has selected the Year of the Grouse theme. On June 17, members of the Battle River Group (organizing events for the upcoming Arts Awards celebrations) attended an event at the Government House hosted by Lieutenant Governor Lois Mitchell. The following information was provided by Anne Mirejovsky, intern researching grouse in Battle River Region, who was in attendance at the event. During the event the recipients of the 2019 Distinguished Artists Awards were announced and include writer Marilyn Dumont, artist/teach-

er Walter Jule and sculptor Katie Ohe. Poet Dumont of Edmonton won the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award from the League of Canadian Poets in 1997 for her first collection of poems, A Really Good Brown Girl (1996). Her recent accolades include the 2016 Writers’ Guild of Alberta’s Stephan G. Stephansson Award for her work, Pemmincan Eaters (2015). Jule is credited with creating and promoting the first Canadian printmaking Master’s program at the University of Alberta and has taught many accomplished artists in the media of printmaking. Jule is internationally recognized within the art community, and his art is found in more than 60 major public collections worldwide. Ohe is a pioneer of Alberta’s abstract art movement, with over a 60-year career working as a sculptor. Ohe’s work has been showcased extensively both nationally and internationally and her works are in many public collections and galleries. She has taught at the Alberta College of Art and Design Sculpture courses since 1970. The June 17 event

welcomed members from the Battle River region including Chief Vernon Saddleback, Chief Leonard Standing On The Road, Elder Roy Lewis and Dr. Jane Ross. “They opened the meeting with prayer and a poem, followed by a minipowwow with traditional dancers and drumming,” noted Mirejovsky. The official Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Awards will be held on Sept. 21 at the Jonas Applegarth Theatre Nipisihikopahk Secondary School in Maskwacis. “This is the first time these prestigious Alberta awards have been held in a First Nations community. “ Tickets for the Battle River Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards and Events are available at http://camroselive.ca/ event/lieutenant-governorof-alberta-distinguishedartist-awards. Public input sought for reducing government red tape By Murray Green

The province has committed to reducing the amount of red tape created by the government. Camrose Constituency MLA Jackie Lovely was appointed to the Red Tape Reduction Task Force to assist associate minister of red tape, Grant Hunter. This office will work with all departments and agencies to reduce the regulatory burden by one-third and accelerate the time lines for regulatory approval. A new website will crowd source input from business, organizations and the public on which government regulations should be improved, kept or scrapped. As part of the Red Tape Reduction Action Plan,

the province has launched CutRedTape.alberta.ca with a submission form for Albertans to provide feedback on their encounters with costly and unnecessary red tape, and suggestions on how to get rid of it. “The regulatory burden in our province is simply unnecessary. Albertans know this, job creators know this and our government knows this. I look forward to hearing from Albertans on how we can reduce the burden and to meeting with industry leaders to discuss how we can make it easier to do business and create jobs in the province. I encourage every Albertan to follow our progress online as we work together to cut red tape,” said Grant Hunter, associate minister of Red Tape Reduction.

In addition to being an easy way for people to submit ideas, CutRedTape.alberta.ca will show where red tape has already been cut and keep people apprised on the commitment to reduce the regulatory burden by one-third and get Albertans back to work. Panels are being established to hear from Alberta businesses and industry experts and local MLAs are arranging roundtable discussions in their constituencies to determine how best to cut red tape, while ensuring the health and safety of Albertans and the environment is safeguarded. Albertans are encouraged to share their red tape stories at CutRedTape.alberta.ca.

Submitted Camrose Constituency MLA Jackie Lovely was appointed to the Red Tape Reduction Task Force shown with associate minister of red tape, Grant Hunter. The objective of the ministry is to work with all departments and agencies to reduce the regulatory burden by one-third and accelerate the time lines for regulatory approval. The red tape plan is a key part of the UCP strategy to reignite the economy and get Albertans working again.

SWEET SUCCESS Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Camrose’s first Lemonade Day was a sweet success. On June 22, there were 18 Lemonade stands set up across Camrose by a group of young entrepreneurs participating in the North America wide initiative to teach youth how to start, own and operate their own business. Judging on the Best Tasting, Best Stand and Entrepreneur of the Area was conducted and winners were announced at the final business mentoring session held on June 25. Approximately 30 Camrose children participated in the program and 624 in Northern Alberta. The program was such a success that it has been already slated for June 20 of next year.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Liam Hatch, owner/operator of Liam-onade received a little assistance setting up his stand from father and business mentor Gordon.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Ellie Bear stand owner/operator Elizabeth Tulloch stirred in a special ingredient to her lemonade.

Donating to healthy living By Lori Larsen

The Camrose Public Library is so much more than just a place to find that book you’ve been dying to read, it is a hub of activity where all members of the community are invited to come and “check out” a variety of programs, services and fun events. Among the many things the library offers, it also is a place that promotes inclusiveness and self and community wellness. On June 6, staff at the library were delighted to accept a generous donation of physical literacy items, including six pairs of adult snowshoes, six pairs of children’s snowshoes, two Nordic walking sticks and two children’s strider bikes from the Camrose Wellness Coalition. “We have a strong partnership with the Camrose Public Library,” said Camrose Wellness Coalition chair Lucy Ernst. “When we learned that the physical activity items they currently have for loan are regularly signed out, we wanted to learn more about what items were most popular and how we could possibly help out with supplying more.” In 2018, the adult snowshoes were signed out on loan from the library 113 times, the children’s snowshoes 62 times and the Nordic walking poles 87 times. “This shows the need for additional physical activity equipment to be available for access to Camrose and area children, adults and seniors at no cost,” said Ernst.

These guidelines also state that adults aged 65 and older should accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity per week. Children ages five to 17 are encouraged to accumulate 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity daily. “Unfortunately, most Canadians are not meeting these guidelines,” said Ernst. “The Centre

Donations for the gift of reading By Lori Larsen

One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the ability to read. To venture into worlds otherwise unknown or unreachable, to progress in their growth, both mentally and emotionally and to build on healthy, happy and successful futures. Reading University assists children, specifically students of Grades 2 and 3, who are not yet reading at grade level, by improving literacy skills. Reading University is a four-week summer program that combines learning with fun activities and engages the children in their own success. The Reading University program took roots in Camrose in the summer of 2009 and this summer is offered in Camrose and Tofield. Partnerships among organizations throughout Camrose and area, ensure the program continues to benefit children struggling with literacy, giving them hope and instilling pride in their accomplishments. Three of the main partners, Battle River Community Foundation, Battle River School Division and University of Alberta, Augustana Campus, contribute finances, time, facilities and resource materials to ensure the program remains viable. However, donations from other organizations and individuals are not only gratefully received but vital in maintaining this important initiative that helps to remove barriers in a child’s learning.

“The teachers of Battle River Local No. 32 are happy to support programs that help students of our area,” said Battle River School Division, ATA Local No. 32, president Karin Paterson, after presenting a donation from teachers of Local No. 32, to Battle River Community Foundation ambassador Blain Fowler. “The Reading University Program provides opportunities for young students to build their reading skills beyond the classroom, and the members of the Local are pleased to offer financial support for this opportunity.” Children attending the Reading University Program do so at no cost to their families and are not only provided with qualified teaching, healthy

at the completion of the program, where they are presented with certificates by the dean (or appointed representative) of Augustana. With a success rate that includes over 500 students who have happily completed the program, Reading University has proven to not only increase reading levels but students also retain their skills long after the program completion. Testimonials of teachers, parents and students themselves repeat the same message, the measurement of success for Reading University goes far beyond just reading, it shows up in smiles on faces. For more information on Reading University visit brcf. ca/reading_university.html.

4-H calf gets two chances at raising funds for good By Lori Larsen

Camrose 4-H Beef Club member Addison Ross never dreamed that the steer she raised to be auctioned off during the annual Show and Sale on June 3 and 4 would get two turns in the ring and also benefit cancer research for finding a cure. During the two-day show and sale, 4-H youth are given an opportunity to showcase the amazing work they do throughout the year to raise various classes of cattle. The Interclub show is open to youth ages nine to 21 years old from Camrose Club, Armena Club, Rosalind Club, Bashaw Club and New Norway. The youth participated according to age category of junior (ages nine to 12), intermediate (ages 13 to 15) and senior (ages 16 to 21). Judging is also based on grooming, showmanship, judging, record book keeping, rate of gain on market female/steer and a prize is also awarded to the best kept and decorated stall. This year’s Show and Sale featured 58 market steers and was attended by family, friends and members of the local business community in and around Camrose, all there to support the hard work and dedication of the 4-H youth. Harley’s Liquor Store is one such business that has supported the 4-H youth over the past nine years by purchasing steers.

This year, owners of Harley’s (Pat and Trevor Carlson) purchased two steers, one for personal use and the other they graciously donated back to the sale to be resold, which the business has done in two previous years. At the request of Pat, all proceeds from the sale of the steer, after being donated back, were to go to fund Cross Cancer Institute. In the two other years, the funds were donated to STARS. The owners first got involved with the 4-H Show and Sale after a 4-H member requested putting up a poster in their store. “Growing up a poor rancher’s daughter, a rural child, I said to Trev, we should support these people,” said Pat. “Camrose is an agriculture community and we feel it is important to support as much of the community as we can.” Youth participating in 4-H programs not only come out with the skills learned from raising their animals, but are taught other valuable skills that can be used in every aspect of life, including public speaking, responsibility and community service. “The 4-H program does so much good community work,” remarked Pat. On an average, the 58 steers that were sold during the Camrose sale went for $3.10 per pound compared to the Tofield

sale that averaged $2.20/ pound. “It always amazes me how much the Camrose business people support the 4-H,” said Pat. The steer purchased by Pat and Trevor that was donated back to the sale was then purchased by Arvid Fonstad and Tracy Wirstuick of Quick Mats of Drayton Valley, who paid $6 per pound, raising $8,184 for Cross Cancer Institute. The show and sale not only gives youth an opportunity to learn the ropes of business, but showcase to a caring community of business owners and others the pride they take in being part of 4-H association.

New chief of police looking forward to serving community By Lori Larsen

Camrose welcomes Dean LaGrange as the new Chief of Police for the Camrose Police Service on July 8. LaGrange came from his most recent posting in Red Deer, as the Inspector of Operations for Red Deer Royal Canadian Mounted Police and prior to taking that position, he retired from Calgary Police Service with 26 years of service under his belt. Born and raised in rural central Alberta, LaGrange completed his schooling in Red Deer, then moved to Calgary at the age of 18 where he continued with post secondary education, then joined the Calgary Police Service at 22 years of age. “I had a varied, interesting career (in policing),” said LaGrange. “I worked in the traffic section, under cover, then worked my way through the ranks and up to the level of inspector.” Within his successful career with Calgary Police Service, he spent a year in Afghanistan training local police members in democratic policing procedures with NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), during Operation Enduring Freedom. “It was a difficult time because it was near the end of the war in 2011-12 and I was staying in Kabul at a US military base, Camp Eggers. Teaching democratic policing in a combat zone where all they are really interested in is surviving until the next day, was really a challenge.” When LaGrange returned to Canada, he was confronted with inquiries as to what he brought back from the experience in the way of law enforcement skill sets. Because most of what he saw involved the will to simply make it to the next day, he remarked there was very little technical information to bring back. “What I did bring back with me was an affirmation of what this country means to me. I have been a police officer for nearly 30 years and have stood at attention saluting the flag many times over my career. But after I came back from Afghanistan, it took on a whole new meaning.” It is apparent ’ve had a varied, the experiinteresting career. ence had a profound affect on Chief LaGrange. His manner softened somewhat as he reflected on what the experience meant to him. “My heart wants to burst with pride and thanks for being born here. It is like winning the lottery when you see what is out there in the world. People take it for granted. I know I did.” He also said that, despite the fact that his family (wife and three children) didn’t actually go with him to Afghanistan, sharing what he saw, experienced and learned, was good for them as well. “You come back more compassionate and more understanding of how immigrants (to Canada) view the police in their countries. In some instances it is a corrupt system, a winner take all type of society. Often when immigrants from places like Afghanistan are stopped by police, it is not necessarily for a legitimate reason. They (police in these countries) are stopping them because they want to pad their pockets and the person may have no choice, pay or go to jail.” LaGrange came to understand that immigrants from those countries then come over to Canada with a healthy fear of police and authority. “That has really opened my eyes to the lengths we have to go in western law enforcement to ensure that they know this is a society where everyone is treated equally and that they can not be afraid to call the police for whatever reason.” After serving and then retiring from Calgary Police Service, LaGrange moved into a position with the RCMP. “There were a couple of senior officers who came from the RCMP to Calgary Police Service. The agencies end up with a cross pollination of ideas and new ways of doing business. As I got to know them and nearing my time

“I

with Calgary Police Service, they asked if I had ever considered going to the RCMP and bringing some of my skills and experiences to them.” Consideration for the move over was influenced by the fact that LaGrange’s father was an RCMP. “I thought it would be a great addition to my career.” He accepted the position as Inspector of Operational Support out of Red Deer in January 2018 and had every intention of staying

was pleased with what he learned about the community. “Camrose really seems like a very nice place. I have gone from a very large city to medium city to now a smaller city. I am really looking forward to it.” After taking in Jaywalkers’ Jamboree and enjoying the warm atmosphere of downtown merchants and the overall pride Camrose takes

PUBLIC NOTICE Development Permit application #4563 is currently being considered which requires a Variance for reduced side yard setbacks for the development of a single detached dwelling located within the R2 – Mixed Use Residential District at:

70% of total residential water usage is due to outdoor use. The majority of this use comes from watering lawns.

Lot 29, Block 9, Plan 082 7968; 4424-74 Street, Camrose

Ways to reduce your water consumption: • Water in the morning or at night. Staying away from the afternoon heat keeps evaporation to a minimum. • Use a rain gauge to prevent overwatering. A rain gauge helps keep track of how much water your plants are getting. Most grasses only need 1 inch of water to stay healthy. • Keep your lawn longer. Long grass keeps the soil cooler, trapping moisture in. For more information about water conservation visit: www.camrose.ca/BeWise

There are four stages in the Water Shortage Response Plan. We are currently in Stage One. Stage One of the Water Shortage Response Plan encourages VOLUNTARY Water Conservation

Churchmice Players preparing for the hit Chicago! show By Murray Green

The Churchmice Players theatre group will once again be displaying the limits of local talent with the production of Chicago! “After the momentous success of Mamma Mia!, Churchmice Players Society is ecstatic to announce that we have received the right to perform the Broadway blockbuster Chicago!,” said director Scot Lorenson. “Chicago! is one of those shows that has name recognition. We have had lots of success over the last couple of shows with a lot of people coming out for auditions, which is phenomenal,” he added. “We are getting a wider reach of talent with people from Drayton Valley and Leduc coming out to audition. It is a balance of keeping the talent local and having the best performers we can find. This show lends itself to a nice big production with great musical numbers in it that everyone will be familiar with.” Chicago! won six Tony Awards including Best Revival and later the Academy Award as Best Picture of the Year. “We’ll bring Chicago! to life on the Lougheed stage in February 2020. Starring in Chicago! is a performer’s dream and auditions will be overflowing with tremendously talented performers. We anticipate a large, enthusiastic cast of vocalists and dancers. In addition, we are also looking for local musicians to be part of this exciting performance—having the musicians on stage with the actors will provide a new theatrical experience for our audience,” said Scot. “Our production crew and the entire Churchmice organization are ready to dedicate all their creative resources to bringing Camrose another exceptional production.” Last year, Scot was the assistant director for Mamma Mia! The natural progression had him pegged for the director’s hat in the next show.

“Part of it is to ensure the continued success of Churchmice, and you do that by putting people in other roles so that you have experienced people in place. It is a lot for one person to keep doing year after year. The idea with me coming in is to learn from someone like Dave McDougall, who is very good. It provides more options and we are doing that with other roles as well. It is good to see the other side of what goes on in a production,” said Scot, who has acted in several shows. “It was easier in the past when we had less people involved and you had to count on a person being in every show. Now we have more people willing to help out. When you go into a big production like this, you have an idea of who would be good for certain parts. But you don’t know if they are available or another person could come along who is even better suited to that role. That’s why we have the auditions. Now, with so much talent, we have to ask ourselves if we double cast. I don’t think you can make that decision until you have gone through the audition process. With Chicago!, it allows us to have more people on stage.” Auditions will be held on Sept. 12 and 13, with callbacks on Sept. 18. Dance auditions will be held on Sept. 15.

Performance dates for the show will Feb. 6, 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15 and 16 at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. Watch the Churchmice Players website and Facebook page for audition details at http://churchmice.ca and https://www. facebook.com/churchmiceplayers/. The local production team from Churchmice will be producer Theo Thirsk, director Scot Lorenson, choreographer Dustin Muise, choral director Carolyn Olsen, band coordinator Art Fadum, set design Todd Sikorski, costume designer Peggy Noble-Cappie and production advisor Dave McDougall. The book was written by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse. It is based on the play by Maurine Dallas Watkins and script adapted by David Thompson. Chicago! is a story based in the roaring ’20s Chicago when chorus girl Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her husband Amos to take the rap … until he finds out he’s been duped and turns on Roxie. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another murderess Velma Kelly vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the American dream of fame, fortune and acquittal.

CAFCL bids fond farewell to McDonald By Lori Larsen

A large crowd turned out to Camrose Association For Community Living’s (CAFCL) annual general meeting held on June 10, at the Camrose Resort Casino, to hear a report of the year and, more importantly, to bid farewell to chief executive officer (CEO) Esther McDonald.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Camrose Association for Community Living board president Keith Lyseng, right thanks CAFCL CEO Esther McDonald for 35 years of dedicated service. Annual stats

In presenting the annual report, McDonald indicated that CAFCL served 584 people in Camrose and east central Alberta during the 2018-19 year, with 110 employees and 68 volunteers that logged 1,156 volunteer hours. “The numbers speak for themselves on the role of this organization in the community and the need for this organization.” Finances

The 2018-19 treasurer’s report showed total revenues of $6,082,964 with the primary source representing 89 per cent coming from government funding. The total expenses were $5,872,704 with wages accounting for 89 per cent. The surplus funds future programs and ensure that the reserve funds for operations, programming and buildings adequately cover future needs. CAFCL Champions

McDonald shared with the crowd a video on CAFCL’s (in partnership with University of Alberta Augustana Campus) newest initiative, SingAble, an all inclusive community choir for singers of all abilities and levels of experience. “SingAble came to us from a suggestion in our suggestion box from one of our front line employees (Dan Jensen) who had been with CAFCL for just over a year.” McDonald presented Jensen with the Vision Champion award for his important role in helping to create SingAble, which fell directly in line with CAFCL’s overall vision that each person is an accepted and participating community member. Tying in with the gratitude CAFCL staff and individuals express for the creation of SingAble, McDonald presented University of Alberta Augustana Campus associate professor and director of music, Ardelle Ries, with the Inclusion Champion award for her role in forming a partnership between CAFCL and Augustana to come together for SingAble. Receiving the Lifetime Membership Award was Jason Schiele who has been actively involved with CAFCL since first volunteering with his mother at the Burgess School in the early ’80s. Jason continued a long string of volunteering, beginning with the charity auction for many years, followed by membership on the board of directors including executive positions as treasurer and president. The Community Champion Award was

The remainder of the afternoon event was dedicated to recognizing McDonald for her long-time (35 years) dedicated service with CAFCL. Outgoing board president Keith Lyseng began with some words used to describe Esther. “Caring, transparent, energetic, efficient and principled. But to board, clients and staff, she is above all a valued friend.” Lyseng described how Esther was the first recipient of a scholarship created back in the ’80s by CAFCL to attract educated, qualified staff that would lead to long-time employment. “Now 35 years later, she is retiring after an amazing career. CAFCL received great value for that scholarship.” He related some of the accomplishments CAFCL has achieved over Esther’s time with the organization, from a list of many. “As you can see, Esther has had a full and accomplished career.” Esther took to the microphone with an emotional story about a lesson she learned from an experience she encountered with one of the first individuals in her care at CAFCL. “We need to expect more of people because they really know more than we give them credit for. We need to believe in people and have confidence in people because they really can do things. They can learn, hold down jobs and be participating members of our community.” In thanking everyone who has supported her throughout her career, Esther made special mention of the CAFCL staffing team and how they are the people behind the success of the organization.

Summer hits just keep coming

By Kevin Sorenson, MP, Battle River-Crowfoot

The agriculture industry is taking hit after hit by China’s relentless retaliation and the Trudeau Liberals’ incompetent handling of this devasting situation. The Chinese government has now banned the imports of all Canadian meat, once again citing food safety concerns. In the last year, Canada exported almost $373 million worth of pork, beef and veal to China. Canadian farmers produce some of the highest quality meat in the world and any assertion by the Chinese government to the contrary is both false and baseless. Canada has already lost Chinese market access for canola and soy. To date, Prime Minister Trudeau has failed to take decisive action and stand up to the Chinese government. At the time of writing this column, the Prime Minister was heading to the G20. Hopefully, he seized that opportunity to personally raise this issue with President Xi Jinping and demand that he removes these non-tariff trade barriers. Alberta farmers were hit with the Notley Government’s carbon tax on Jan. 1, 2017, which drove up a myriad of farm input costs, such as fertilizer, pesticide and grain transportation. Fortunately, newly elected Premier Jason Kenney introduced the Carbon Tax Repeal Act. In the wake of that announcement, federal environment minister, Catherine McKenna, said the Liberal government was working as quickly as possible to impose the federal tax on Alberta instead. The federal carbon tax came into effect on April 1 in Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick and Saskatchewan in the absence of a provincially imposed tax. The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan estimated the carbon tax will cost the provinces’ 20,000 grain producers about $60 million this year and double this amount by 2022. The estimate is based on costs for: propane or natural gas for drying grain; railway transportation to move grain from delivery centres to export ports; trucking transportation to move grain from farm to grain elevator locations; delivery and heating of farm buildings; and electrical increases for farm operation. Conservative leader, Andrew Scheer, has vowed to repeal the federal carbon tax which he characterizes as a revenue plan, not an environment plan. Canadian families and small businesses will pay 92 per cent of the carbon tax, while big polluters are only on the hook for eight per cent. If the Liberals are re-elected on Oct. 21, the carbon tax will go up. The Parliamentary budget officer recently revealed that the carbon tax would have to increase five-fold for Canada to reach its Paris targets. This would mean a litre of gas would increase by 23 cents and it would cost the average Canadian family more than $1,000 a year. In place of the Liberal’s revenue plan, a Conservative government will introduce “A Real Plan to Protect Our Environment” based on three guiding principles: 1. Introducing green technology, not taxes is the best way to lower Canada’s emissions; 2. Working with farmers, hunters and anglers, Indigenous peoples, provinces and territories is the best way to promote a cleaner and greener natural environment to protect our air, land, water and wildlife; and 3. Canada taking a leadership role is necessary to fight climate change globally. To learn more about our plan, you can visit: ARealPlan.ca. Driving in style with a 1959 pink Cadillac By Murray Green

Wilma Van de Laak spent the last week getting her family’s 1959 Cadillac Seville ready for the Camrose Show ‘n’ Shine. She often drives it around just to listen to the engine purr down the streets of Camrose. “This car was sold new in Edmonton at Edmonton Motors in 1959. My parents lived in Edmonton and bought this car from a guy in 1964 and my dad had it ever since,” recalled Wilma. “My dad said to the guy ‘nice car’ and he replied back ‘ya, do you want to buy it’ and my dad (Abraham) said ‘yes’.” Although General Motors first claimed they didn’t build pink Cadillacs, most dealerships in North America received at least one in the late ‘50s. They became popular after Elvis Presley bought a pink Cadillac in 1955. “I remember when I was four years old we went on a trip for a wedding in Idaho. That was pretty much the only long trip it was on. For many years it was wrapped up in blankets and only brought out for weddings, Klondike Days Parades and special events,” shared Wilma. “I know when it did come out that I had to wax the car. Last week, it took me 16 hours to wax it. The car went to me because I’m the only one with a big enough garage for it,” she laughed.

PINK CADDY

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Pink Cadillacs are rare in Alberta. Wilma Van de Laak receives looks from the ladies, almost more than the guys. It isn’t just a muscle car, it is Rosewood Pink, which makes it distinct. It now has 86,000 miles on it, but it really hasn’t been out much since 1964.

“The original owner put the majority of miles on the car. My dad basically used it to drive politicians around in the Klondike Parade,” added Wilma. “It has never been modified, it is very original. The carpet looks almost brand new. In the rear seat I liked to sit in the middle, which I

FUN FACTS

The Cadillac Eldorado is a premium luxury car that was manufactured and marketed by Cadillac from 1952 to 2002 over 10 generations. Along with the rest of the General Motors divisions, the bulky, originally proposed 1959 styling was abandoned in favor of a significantly lower, longer and wider theme. The 1959 Cadillac is remembered for its huge sharp tailfins with dual bullet tail lights, two distinctive rooflines and roof pillar configurations, new jewel-like grille patterns and matching deck lid beauty panels. The Seville and Biarritz models had the Eldorado name spelled out behind the front wheel opening and featured broad, full-length body sill highlights that curved over the rear fender profile and back along the upper beltline region. Standard equipment included power brakes, power steering, automatic transmission, back-up lamps, windshield wipers, two-speed wipers, wheel discs, outside rearview mirror, vanity mirror, oil filter, power windows, six way power seats, heater, fog lamps, remote control deck lid, radio and antenna with rear speaker, power vent windows, air suspension, electric door locks and license frames.

thought was a booster seat. It is actually an arm rest, but when you are little, it was a comfortable place to sit. I remember sneaking into the car in the garage with a book and reading for hours. The car has a lot of memories for me. I spent a lot of time washing and polishing it.” The Cadillac has a 396 big block engine, power steering, power brakes and a trunk large enough to have a picnic in it. Cadillacs were the largest cars in the late ‘50s. “It doesn’t have power windows. You have to crack open the windows the old fashioned way, by hand,” she explained. “It just has an old AM radio, but you can pick up Calgary stations easily with it. Oh, it does have a power antenna. It must be a transistor because it takes about eight seconds to come on.” Wilma plans to take the car to a few local car shows and drive it around the city to keep the Cadillac running smooth. “It has been under used. My dad used it for parades,

but I want to go to a few car shows so others can enjoy it as well.” The Cadillac has a few scratches and paint chips from over the years, but the interior is almost in showroom condition. “Now as an adult, the first time I drove it was last

year when my parents sold their house and moved to a smaller place. I turned everything on to make sure it works. It has four ash trays and two cigarette lighters. I was excited to drive it and doing that and reading in the car are my most fond memories.”

ALS WALK

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster A large crowd of supporters showed up on June 22 at Mirror Lake to walk, run, stroll, jog or ride for the Camrose Walk for ALS.

July 18, 1947 ~ July 6, 2018 God saw you getting tired A cure was not to be, So he put his arms around you And whispered, “Come to Me.” With tearful eyes,   we watched you And saw you fade away, Although we loved you dearly, We could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, Your tender hands at rest, God took you home   to prove to us He only takes the best. Miss you lots. – Kathy and family

October 29, 1928 ~ June 24, 2019 Ruby Linnea Swedberg, cherished mother, grandma, great-grandma, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully in St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose, on June 24, 2019 at the age of 90 years. Ruby was born on October 29, 1928, at Donalda, Alberta, to Seth and Vanja Bergstrom. The family was complete with the birth of her brother Alvin. Ruby enjoyed farm life as a young child, helping with family chores. Ruby met the love of her life, Allan, while babysitting a family near Meeting Creek. It was on January 10, 1951, that Ruby married Allan and they took over the Swedberg family farm. To this union, five children were born. They continued farming until they semi-retired to Camrose in 1985. They owned and operated “Ruby’s Grocery”, serving the community for many years. Ruby and Allan were blessed to enjoy over 51 years of marriage before Allan’s passing on May 29, 2002. Ruby was very active in the Meeting Creek community and continued being so after moving to Camrose. She was a member of The Women of the Moose as well as the Legion, and kept busy catering to many events. Ruby enjoyed sports and was a loyal fan of the Kodiaks. She also enjoyed watching all her family participate in many activities. Ruby never missed a Meeting Creek ball tournament until this summer. She loved camping, curling, trips to Florida and hosting family Christmas at her house. Left to cherish her memory are her four sons Dwain (Arlene), Lorne (Connie), Vern (Shelley) and Myran (Adele); one daughter Mary Ann (Dean) Brady; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two sisters-in-law Doris and Evelyn; many nieces and nephews; and a host of relatives and friends. Sleep in peace, Mom, we love you! A Funeral Service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 28, 2019, from CityLights Church, 4920-48 Street, Camrose, with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. Interment will take place in the Meeting Creek Cemetery. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Ruby’s memory may be made to the Meeting Creek Cemetery. Gloria Marie Green July 31, 1957 ~ June 12, 2019 Gloria Marie Green, age 61, of Camrose, AB, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, June 12, 2019. She was born to the late Florence and Arthur Cappis on July 31, 1957. Loved to the ends of the earth and left to cherish her memory are her son Steven (Stacey) Green of Spruce Grove and daughter Tracy Green (Dan Bouchard) of Camrose. She will be held in the hearts and forever missed by her six grandchildren Dylan, Ethan, Peytan, Courtney, SydaLea and Case. Gloria was one of thirteen brothers and sisters. She was predeceased by brothers Leonard, Roger, Kenny and Donny; and sister Sharon. She is survived by five sisters Dalphine, Bev, Betty, Glenna and Joyce; as well as two brothers Barry and Cameron. A loving mother and grandmother, Gloria was a remarkable baker and cook and absolutely adored preparing baking and dishes for her children and grandchildren. She had an uncanny way of just adding a little of this and touch of that in the most scattered way, then serving the most amazing dish that would leave her family begging for more. When asked for her recipe, she would heartily say with a giant smile and the old ‘eye roll’, “Oh, I don’t know, I don’t measure.” Gloria was young and full of life; she gave every ounce of her being so unselfishly with humility and kindness, and loved her children and grandchildren to no end. They were truly the most important to her, above and beyond anything else. Gloria wanted for nothing but the company and love from her family and friends and was an extremely hard worker. She worked at Safeway in Camrose where she formed friendships and was able to share her hard work and dedication. After which, she would then enjoy a coffee and visit with her sisters and nieces. She loved a sense of humor to a point that we sometimes didn’t even know what she was laughing at. Her laughter and humor were so infectious, and this was just one of the many qualities about her that the grandchildren especially loved and has been passed on to them. And boy, did they like to tease Grandma. Mom, you were taken too soon, truly loved, and will be forever missed, but held tight in our hearts. We love you. A celebration of life will be held in her memory on Sunday, July 28, 2019 in a banquet hall in the Camrose Resort Casino, beginning at 1 p.m. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Gloria’s memory may be made to the Saving Grace Animal Society, 4932 Main Street, Alix, AB T0C 0B0. To send condolences, please visit Phone 780-672-2121 “Dedicated service since 1906” www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Two local football players on Team Alberta By Murray Green

Two Camrose Buffaloes football players made the Football Alberta U16 provincial team that will compete in the Western Championship in Kamloops July 15 to 18. Cornerback Kieran Sherman of Forestburg and defensive end Noah Segal from Camrose will be two key players on the squad that will take on some of the best players in western Canada. “We went to the U16 north camp in the spring and made that team. After a game (in Calgary) with guys from the south camp, they took the best players from both teams to make one team,” explained Kieran. Kieran played for the bantam Buffaloes last year and will move onto the Camrose Composite High School Trojans this fall. Noah will be heading into his second season with the Trojans. “To be considered as one of the top 40 guys in the entire province is a big accomplishment. You have to work really hard to get there,” shared Noah. “It is something that you work towards” There were 325 players trying out for the U16 Team Alberta squad and 40 players were selected to play in Kamloops. “It wasn’t too tough because I play a lot of sports throughout the year. We are usually in shape,” said Kieran. “It’s not a big thing, but it was a little difficult getting into the sport that you haven’t played since last fall.” Playing competitive football in the spring during

Kieran Sherman, left, and Noah Segal are off to Kamloops to play for Football Alberta in the Western Canadian U16 Football Championships on July 15 to 18.

the off-season takes dedication. “After not playing and then going to a camp with players from teams from all over was an adjustment. You have to work hard in the off-season if you want to make this club,” added Noah. Team Alberta will play BC, and then either Saskatchewan or Manitoba in Kamloops. “There will be a lot of

good competition in the championships. It will be the top 40 guys from each province. It’s good competition and it should be a lot of fun,” said Kieran. “I hope to perform well and with scouts attending, it would be good to get noticed and get my name out,” added Noah. Both of the local players played minor football

with the Camrose Buffaloes organization. “It is good to learn the game and all you need to get to the next level. Minor football prepares you for something like this. You get to develop all of your skills and it really helped. I have been playing for seven or eight years, since I was seven in atom football,” shared Kieran. “I played at the high

school last year, so I have an advantage. Because of where my birthday falls I went to school early. I will be one of the more experienced players, but football has prepared me for something like this as well,” continued Noah, who has had Fitz and his dad Richard coach him in the past. He has had several other good coaches over the years. In minor football, players often play on both sides of the ball (offence and defence). “I think defence is harder because you have to react to the play. On offence you know before the snap of the ball what the play is going to be,” said Kieran. “You definitely have to be more aware of what is going on, covering your zones and making sure your responsibility is covered,” said Noah. “When you go to camps like this, the quality of football keeps going higher and higher. It gets more elite as you go,” commented Kieran. “You go from being within an hour of practices and games to a tournament eight hours away and two practices a day. You have to eat well and watch your body. It will be a lot of football in a week,” said Noah. The players have been working hard the last month to prepare for the championships. Both want to share their experience with local teammates to help them as well. “Certain techniques and how to mentally prepare for a championship is something I can share when I get back,” said Noah.

Royals, Holden tied for top spot in Powerline Baseball League By Murray Green

LEAGUE CHAMPS

Murray Green, Camrose Booster The Camrose Crossfire U10 girls won the Highway 13 Girls Softball League against the other local team.

A week of excessive rain has left the Armena Royals and Holden Blue Jays still tied for the top spot in the Powerline Baseball League, with very little action. Both teams have a 9-11 record after 11 games. Holden beat the Camrose Axemen 11-0 and Arme-

na stopped the Camrose Roadrunners 15-3. The regular season finishes on July 12 and then the playoffs begin shortly after. The top three teams in the league will advance to the playoffs. The fourth and fifth place teams will play a one game wild card contest to qualify for the final playoff spot.

Rained out games need to be completed once the rain subsides. The Axemen and Roadrunners clash at Harry Andreassen Field in Kin Park on July 3, Edmonton is at Holden and Leduc is in Rosalind on July 4 and the Axemen travel to Edmonton on July 5 for a make-up contest.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

MISSION FUNDRAISER – Salem Lutheran Church, Kingman, July 13. BBQ 5 p.m. $5. Silent auction, 5 p.m. start. Live auction 7 p.m. Eddy Schultz, auctioneer and entertainer. Bring lawn chairs. Donated items at church, 12 noon. Contact Guy Anderson, 780-678-0246 or Dave Francis, 780-490-9003 or 780-672-5355.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Former Kodiaks goalie drafted by Flyers By Murray Green

The Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League called former Camrose Kodiaks goalie Roddy Ross when it came to the team’s selection in the sixth round of the draft in Vancouver on June 22. Ross went to the Flyers with the 169th overall pick. He was the 17thranked goalie by NHL Central Scouting and played 25 games for the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds with a record of 16-5-3 and a 2.76 goals-against average and .919 save percentage. Ross will be a 19-yearold on July 4. In the previous season, 2018-19, with the Kodiaks, he posted a 2.94 goals against average and a .920 save percentage. With the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League, he had an average of 2.76 and a .919 save percentage as he split time with both leagues. Although Kodiaks general manager Boris Rybalka didn’t want to lose him, he encouraged Ross to reach the next level that led to his draft by the Flyers. The NHL squad liked the way he progressed both in Camrose and in Seattle.

The strength of Camrose baseball was showcased in an all Camrose final for U13 Boys on June 23 in Leduc. After a hard fought season in their league of 13 teams, both Camrose teams (Blue and Red) went into the playoffs in the top spots of the division with even records of 11-1. Throughout their week-long playoff schedule, Camrose teams battled teams from Beaumont, Drayton Valley, Round Hill and Thorsby. With the shale dust of the league semifinals settling, the Camrose teams found themselves in a rematch of their regular season tilt played on June 12. This mid-June melee saw the first-year dominated roster of Camrose Blue decisively defeat the predominantly secondyear Camrose Red squad. To win the 2019 13U Boys

Birds of a feather By Lori Larsen

They perch high above waiting for prey, then swoop with grace down to capture their victim. Birds of prey, also known as raptors, are one of nature’s finest hunters. On Thursday, July 4, at 7 p.m., come out to the Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society Hawks and Owls presentation by Strathcona Raptor Shelter to be held at the Stoney Creek Centre (5320-39 Avenue). The Strathcona Raptor Shelter cares for and promotes the well-being of birds of prey. On July 4, join others in learning

about bird conservation and take a rare opportunity to interact with some amazing birds of prey of Alberta. Attendees of any Wildlife Stewardship summer sessions are encouraged to put their name into the draw box for a prize that will be drawn during the last session of the season. For more information on any of the Wildlife Stewardship sessions or program, visit the Camrose website or Facebook page, email Brittany at wildlifestewardship@ camrose.ca or telephone 780-672-0544.
