The parade that kicks off the fun of Big Valley Jamboree 2019 will help bring significant awareness to women and children impacted by the long-standing effects of domestic violence. Local men will be marching in force, in red high heels, as participants in this year’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes campaign. Ken Gourlay, local plumber and owner of Ken E.G. Mechanical Ltd., will be showing his support by being decked out in the colour red while riding his gelding Pongo down the parade route. The walk, now international in scope, hopes to put a stop to rape, sexual assault and gender violence. The Kickin’ Country Parade will hit the downtown core of Camrose on Thursday, August 1, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Zetsen helps children with reading By Murray Green
Zetsen Master Builders built a home in Camrose to leave a lasting legacy to help children in the community. Zetsen Master Builders built a 2,186 square foot two-storey home in the Creekview subdivision to launch the fund. Back in 2013, a Charity Home build raised $101,758.44 for the establishment of endowments with Battle River Community Foundation in support of Reading University, Camrose Minor Sports and the Learning Together program. That fund is still helping children six years later and will continue to do so for a very long time. “Knowing how to read is very important to receive a good start in life and it leads to more knowledge. I like to read because it helps me be more creative and
think outside of the box in every day situations,” said Garret Zetsen, one of the community builders that supports Reading University. Zetsen was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to set up the endowments with Battle River Community Foundation and how willing Foundation members were able to work with what his father Garry and he wanted to accomplish. “We chose all three of the programs (Reading University, Camrose Minor Sports and Learning Together) because they are youth oriented,” said Garry Zetsen, at the time of the sale. “Our wish was to set up endowments for them that would always be there.” The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects, pro-
grams and facilities, such as those offered by Reading University, in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $6,350,000 to support community facilities and programs operated by organizations like the Reading University.
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Zetsen Master Builders owner Garrett Zetsen, left, presents Battle River Community Foundation past president and ambassador Blain Fowler with a $2,800 donation to Reading University.

The ultimate shot in the dark
I was stunned when Google reminded me that it’s been 50 years since the first men walked on the moon, July 20, 1969. I was sitting with my kids in our basement apartment, watching it unfold on black and white TV. About 600 million people around the world were tuned in. We watched as Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin stepped onto the moon. We heard Armstrong say, “One small step for a man. One giant leap for mankind.” We knew that the third astronaut, Michael Collins (who must have drawn the short straw), remained onboard the spacecraft. We watched as Aldrin and Armstrong bounced in the low gravity on the moon. And we saw the footprints on the moon dust.

I was beyond excited and thrilled. This wasn’t “man in the moon.” This was man on the moon! Such an achievement seemed inconceivable. When I managed to contain my own excitement enough to notice my kids, I realized they were not as amazed and ecstatic as I was. They’d been watching stuff like this for years on the Saturday morning cartoons. What was the big deal? I learned later that not everyone was thrilled. At least one older woman was discombobulated. Her whole world turned topsy turvy. “When I was growing up,” she said, “We knew for sure that what goes up must come down. But they went up and they didn’t come down.” If you couldn’t count on gravity, what could you count on? Her world was no longer secure. My memory, though, is that most people I knew were excited and thrilled. There used to be an expression, “I could no more do that than fly to the moon.” But now someone flew to the moon! What else might be possible? For a while, we believed that if man could go to the moon, anything was possible. It was a time of optimism and hope. ***
The 1969 space walk demonstrated incredible scientific achievement. It also was a masterwork of collaboration. Behind the scenes, more than 400,000 people worked on the mission and made it possible to land on the moon. All told, it was one of the greatest feats that humans have ever pulled off. The science and collaboration demonstrated some of the best qualities of humanity. The motivation? Pure ego. After the Second World War, the US economy grew. The US assumed that they were world winners, especially in science and technology. But in the cold war years of competition between the USSR and US, Russia was winning the space race. In 1957, Russia successfully launched Sputnik I–the first artificial earth satellite to orbit the earth. In 1959, Russian spacecraft Luna 2 landed on the moon. In 1961, Russian pilot and cosmonaut Yuri Gargarin was the first human to journey into outer space. Americans were fuming. “We choose to go to the moon,” U.S. President John. F. Kennedy declared in 1962 to a captivated crowd at Rice Stadium in Texas. The US would put a man on the moon–and return him safely to earth–by the end of the decade. And they did. Fifty years later, people are experimenting with commercial trips to the moon. It will happen. Fifty years later, I’m thinking about something else. What does it take for something to be so compelling, so exciting, so inspiring and so ego-satisfying, that governments and hundreds of thousands of people will work together in ways they didn’t know were possible, will give it their all and more? What would it take for us to have that same kind of passion to tackle a few other challenges currently facing humanity? Like, say, wars that create millions of refugees who did nothing wrong except be born in a place with corrupt ego-driven leaders. Or, say, scientists’ predictions that we have about 11 years to figure out how to prevent irreversible damage from pumping pollution into our air, water and land? What would it take?

The recent large accumulation of rain has been causing some concern with residents’ basements flooding and subsequent phone calls to insurance companies. The following are some suggestions for residents to assist in preventing flooding and the damage that occurs as a result. Government to review child care pilot projects By Murray Green
The Alberta Government will be reviewing the child care pilot projects across the province. Camrose has two of those pilot projects currently operating within the city. “We have 122 pilot programs across the province and those terms haven’t changed. They started out with 22 pilot projects and with help of the federal government it expanded. The beauty of a pilot is that we get to study it, look at the data and determine if this is the best way to serve children and families across the province. The NDP did have a campaign promise to expand the program by $1.45 billion, but had absolutely no plan to pay for it,” said Rebecca Schulz, Alberta Minister of Children’s Services. “It was set up as a three year pilot, so we are currently reviewing the data and we are going to reach out to talk to child care operators and parents to see if this is the best way to meet their needs,” minister Schulz added. Two child care centres in Camrose were the first to
announce its $25/day child care program could be ending. The centres cited the change in government and a lack of information about the program’s future in a letter to parents, according to the NDP. “Before this issue came up, we didn’t receive any feedback from child care operators. We planned to reach out proactively to let child care operators know that we are going to continue through with the pilot. We will look at the data, but we want to have good conversations with parents to determine if this is the best way to move forward. We ran on a platform of improving the economy to create more jobs so we can pay for programs such as this. Not every parent has the same child care needs,” said minister Schulz. “It is important to note that the three year term for the first 22 centres (including Kids Campus Daycare Society), originally chosen to pilot the Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC) Grant, will end March 31, 2020,” explained Suzanne Dumont director
of the Kids Campus Daycare Society. “If this is not renewed, families must be notified in advance of any changes to fees, programs and hours. This grant, though created by the previous government, creates an amazing platform the current government can build on for Alberta families, making Alberta a leader in Canada in the area of Early Learning and Child Care. It is not subsidized day care, instead it addresses all the recognized issues regarding early learning and child care for families: affordability, quality, availability of child care, and supports the required highly trained workforce. Imagine if all centres were able to duplicate these benefits,” added Suzanne. Camrose Children’s Centre funding in 2018 was a result of the success of the initial pilot program, which saw 75 affordable child care spaces in Camrose funded at the Kids Campus Daycare Society in 2017. “Many do not know that our original 75 spaces have grown into 90 daytime spaces and another

The Camrose Children’s Centre (4304-53 Street) was one of 15 central Alberta locations and one of 122 Alberta locations, that received funding to operate $25/day child care under the former government in the second round of projects. Its contract isn’t up until 2021. News of the possible cancellation of the pilot program in Camrose raises questions about the fate of the remaining 7,276 affordable child care spots throughout the province. “Families shouldn’t have to choose between paying their rent and being able to afford childcare,” said Rakhi Pancholi, NDP opposition critic for children’s services. “Quality, affordable child care means more parents, often women, are able to re-enter the workforce without having to hand over their entire paycheck to pay for child care.” The former government’s investment in high quality, affordable childcare saved families an average of $425 each month, created roughly 450 new jobs in early childhood education and enabled 1,400 parents to re-enter the workforce. Based on the pilot’s overwhelming success, the former government committed to implementing

Just recently, a brand new hearing aid line was released to the public and it’s transforming the hearing experience for its wearers. Most hearing aids deal with background noise using directional microphones that focus only right in front of you--like blinders for your ears. No more! These new hearing aids process signals so exceptionally fast, they handle sound from all directions—greatly improving your ability to hear and comprehend speech, even in noisy environments. Kurek wins candidate spot for fall election By Murray Green
Damien C. Kurek of Camrose, formerly of Consort will be the Conservative Party representative for the riding of Battle River-Crowfoot election this fall. Kurek was named the candidate by the Battle River-Crowfoot Conservative Electoral District Association after votes where counted in Camrose on July 17. “After three months on the campaign, this is ultimately what you hope for. It is an incredible honour to have been given the confidence by the Conservative Party membership within Battle River-Crowfoot,” said Kurek. He replaces current MLA Kevin Sorenson as the Conservative representative, who is retiring from federal politics. Jefferson McClung and Jeff Watson were also in the running, but agreed to back Kurek in a unanimous motion by the association. “It was a great race with three well matched candidates,” said Leona Thorogood, chair of the nomination committee and agent of the association. “We had about 1,500 people vote and we were happy with the voter turnout.” Kurek was also happy with the support. “The amazing thing about the nomination process is that
you have three people who are all Conservatives, coming together to fight for similar values. I have a lot of respect for anyone who puts their name on the ballot. That unity is important. I’m looking forward to be working as a team. I have a lot of faith in Andrew Scheer,” he said. “Across Canada, we have hard working candidates that are willing to fight for a change in government. I look forward to continuing the fight for you, to ensure we have common sense, principled and local leadership in Battle RiverCrowfoot going forward,” said Kurek. He sat on Kevin Sorenson’s board, worked alongside him while he was Minister of State for Finance and most recently served in his Camrose Constituency office. “As far as I am concerned the work starts now. I’m putting the pieces together now on what the fall campaign will look like. It’s exciting to hear from people asking how can they help, renewing connections and building new relationships,” said Kurek. “When my wife and I decided I should run, we went to work immediately. I’m ready to keep working hard right up to the October election.”
GUNPOWDER & ROSE RUM Historically, gunpowder was always used to prove the rum was at full strength. If it lit on fire, it was fit to drink! We have used local ingredients to mimic gunpowder flavours before the mellower tones of the barrel aging and vanillas take over, which is finished off by the aromatic scents of wild Newfoundland Roses.

Major developments in City By Lori Larsen
Residents may notice some ground moving and buildings rising around Camrose, all signs of the City progressing ahead with development. City of Camrose planning and development director Aaron Leckie reports on five major developments, projects valued over $1 million, that are presently in various states of construction and approval. The first major project is referred to as the Cahoon Liv Centre Dental office and three commercial lease bays located at 4819-68th Street (in front of Konto Furniture). The second floor of the site will house Dr. Cahoon’s new dental office; however, Leckie said the City is not absolutely sure what particular business/industry will occupy the three commercial lease bays, but suspects it will be medically related.

Plus 10 Bonus Air Miles Project two is Sleep Country Canada located at 6805-48th Avenue (beside Winners). “That is a single story building and has been a very quick
proceeding project,” said Leckie adding that is the last site on that property to be developed. Project three is the proposed site for a Burger King, Denny’s, Shell (gas station), convenience store, liquor store and car wash located at 5709-48th Avenue (the former Crawford’s site). The fourth project will consist of five commercial lease bays on the empty lot behind the FasGas located on the corner of 48th Avenue and Mount Pleasant Drive. The fifth major project is a proposed car and truck wash that will be located in the industrial park on the corner of 37 Street and 44 Avenue. “These developments add quite a bit of real growth to the city in terms of revenues and construction value.” Leckie also reported on the progress with cannabis retail. “The province is now issuing retail
licences again, between five and 10 a week for the rest of the year.” As of July 5, there had been no licences approved for Camrose; however, Leckie expected one would be approved by the end of the month. “We are up to nine approved locations (for cannabis retail operations) in the city with two more pending.” While the proposed businesses are planned for locations throughout the City, Leckie indicated that the City is diligent about tracking the location, ensuring they are not located near any schools, health care facilities or other locations designated off limits by the bylaw. “Those all have some small construction value of approximately $200,000 in interior renovations on average.” For more information on City related business and development, licencing and/or permits contact the planning and development office at 780-672-4428. Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Two of the recent major developments occurring in Camrose are the Liv Centre (Cahoon Dental office) located just south of Konto Furniture store, left photo and the Sleep Country store located just to the north of Winners, right photo.

Doneal Greipl Co-owner
Years ago, it was Doneal Greipl, wife of business founder Russ, who came up with the slogan ‘Home of Outstanding Customer Service’ as the motto for R & D Hot Tubs. This phrase perfectly embodies their approach to business. Doneal, in her company role, wears a lot of hats: accountant, ordering agent, chief showroom organizer, sales consultant, product expert – whether it’s Green Mountain Grills, hot tub supplies or knowing the latest features of any Hydropool model of tub or swim spa. Like many small business owners, she is available wherever, whenever, the next opportunity and challenge exists in the business or at home. Such is the life! Doneal, according to Russ, is a critical component to the success of their business; a business which has earned virtually every achievementt award possible from Hydropool! Sheila DeJesus Cashier
Sheila DeJesus is one those people whose corporate title doesn’t really effectively spell out her job description. While officially she’s a cashier at Hauser Home Hardware Building Centre, she’d be more aptly labeled the official welcoming crew for the entire operation. Sheila is a professional at making people feel welcome, remembering their names and making sure they think of Home Hardware the next time they need most anything the store can provide. Her infectious personality brings people back time and time again. Her positive personality brings out the best in coworkers and brightens moods of clients and staff alike. Her value to the major retailer doesn’t end there. Sheila knows the product line well, in fact, very well. She will make sure your trip in for a quick plumbing part, electrical component or load of lumber goes as planned, or better than expected. She trains new staff, ensures company procedures and processes are followed. Most importantly, she makes sure client needs are met or exceeded. She makes shopping fun. She’s the brains behind contests and unexpected surprises, especially on weekends. Mexican Day? 6809-48 Ave., Camrose Paper Airplane Day? It was Sheila’s idea! 780-672-8818 Always is.
They ‘wrote the book’ on great customer service
There has been a lot written about the importance of teamwork, about being cooperative, communicating well, collaborating, being part of the solution and not the problem. Geri Ferner and Chris Cameron could have written that book. They don’t have MBA degrees from a business college, but they do have that unmistakable can-do attitude that their customers really appreciate. Eighteen years ago they began working together, managing the operations of Camrose’s original full-service hotel. But they didn’t start out in management roles; they earned them, working their separate ways up through the ranks. They’ve washed dishes, served in the restaurant, dining room, lounge and nightclub; they worked as night managers, each of them learning the skills to become managers. Now, as they talk about their roles at the hotel, there’s a natural, easy friendliness between them gained over the years, over the hundreds of banquets they’ve coordinated, the staffing schedules, the training, the supervising, and of course the thousands of conversations they’ve
Geri Ferner
had with customers, some of whom come into the hotel three times a day. They both agree that their favorite part of the job is working with their customers. It’s what drew them to the hospitality business in the first place. Geri started 30 years ago, fresh out of high school, working in the nightclub. Several years later, she was night manager and then manager. Chris followed a similar path. She began working part-time in the nightclub while attending Augustana and liked the work so much, she decided on a career in hospitality. Now they work in the same office at desks that face each other. Sometimes they finish each other’s sentences. Sometimes they laugh at exactly the same time. They share a similar sense of humour. They’re committed to excellent customer service. They enjoy the diversity each workday brings, the many different people Chris they encounter and the situations which Cameron arise. If you’re ready to start planning an event and want it to run as smoothly as possible, give Chris or Geri a call today. They will respond as one.

The automotive section of
Bradford’s Cadillac received in a trade By Murray Green
John Bradford of Camrose didn’t purchase his 1975 Cadillac Coupe de Ville. In fact, he was quite content driving his 1981 Buick until his sister in Seattle offered a trade he couldn’t refuse when he was visiting. “My sister bought this car from the Buick dealership in Seattle. The salesman told her it was from California and she picked it up for $2,200 in the mid 1980s. The guy traded it in for a truck and the car was originally from Berkeley, California. The dealer’s name was still on the car. It had 70,000 miles on it when she bought the car. It now has 166,534 miles on it,” explained John. Little did John know that she was going to offer the car to him. “One morning she said I’ll trade you cars. She was retiring and didn’t want as big of a car because it is hard to park it in Seattle. They have smaller parking stalls and it costs a lot to park everywhere. Margorie used it to drive to Tacoma, 45 miles one way highway driving, to work every day. So, she offered me a trade and I accepted,” said John. “You can’t take up more than your stall. A guy comes around at grocery stores and marks your tires and takes down your license number. They give you an

hour and a half to shop. Otherwise they give you a $47 ticket. I once drove in and parked in an area that you were supposed to back in and park. They gave me a $47 ticket, but I didn’t fight it. I just paid it because I didn’t want it on my record when I cross the border a
FUN FACTS
The Cadillac de Ville was originally a trim level and later a separate model produced by Cadillac. The first car to bear the name was the 1949 Coupe de Ville, a pillarless two-door hardtop body style with a prestige trim level above that of the Series 62 luxury. Styling changes for 1975 brought dual rectangular headlamp lenses flanked by rectangular cornering lights wrapped around the body. A new cross hatched grille also appeared. Sedan de Villes now featured slim triangular quarter windows that mimicked the coach windows that appeared on Coupe de Villes the previous year. New standard equipment included front fender lamp monitors, power door locks, high energy ignition, steel-belted radial tires. The 210 hp 500 V8 replaced the 472 as the standard engine. Electronic fuel injection became optional in March 1975. Another option was the Astroroof with sliding sunshade that permitted use as an electrically operated sunroof or a transparent closed skylight. An ordinary sunroof panel was also available. The car was named DeVille several years later. The introduction of the optional Air Cushion Restraint System was introduced in the 1974 models. Known today as airbags, this option provided protection for front seat occupants in the case of a frontal collision.
lot,” John added. “You don’t see a lot of big cars down there anymore. Parking is scarce.” Both cars were in good shape and had new tires. “I’ve gone to the States a few times on various trips and to BC. I don’t drive it around town much because of the gas mileage. It is smooth on the highway. You could almost drive it with two fingers because it stays on the road, while you’re moving 5,000 pounds,” he laughed. The car had a 500 C.I.D. engine and it had a hitch for pulling. “We switched the engine, for the same size, and the transmission was leaking so we took it down to a transmission shop. It turns out the seal was gone and the transmission was fine. I’ve never touched the transmission, except for getting it resealed,” shared John. “The first owner must have pulled something with it, but I haven’t.” John said he has kept up with regular maintenance and it is still in good shape. “I had to tinker with the passenger door to get it working better and adjust
the hood to get it to close better, so minor adjustments along the way,” he said. “It was built solid.” He had to repair the front grill and paint the car after a stint with Mother Nature. “I hit a deer with it one night. It took out the grille, lights and part of the fender. It jumped right in
front of the car and I had no hope. I had the yellow colour matched and painted.” Now John drives the car when he feels like going for a longer drive. “I usually park it for the winter and drive it only in the summer. I’m going to drive it for as long as I can.”

You get into an accident. Your insurance company says, “Take your vehicle to so and so.” But you say, “I want to take it to The Auto Shoppe – I know Jackie Rae is the celebrity apprentice there, and she wouldn’t lead me astray!”
As a diagnostic technician, Dean is one of the best in the automotive trade. When David Cassidy hired this aspiring mechanic back in 1991, he quickly learned he’d found someone special.
All joking aside, where you take your vehicle after an accident is the most important decision you can make. Two reasons:
Today, they’re back on the same team, providing speed, efficiency, and talent on every job.
Number 1: You need to take it to a shop certified by the world’s leading auto manufacturers.
Whether it’s a simple parts swap or a complex repair requiring creative thinking, fabrication and installation, Dean’s the man for your job.
Number 2: You need someone you can trust, and that’s The Auto Shoppe in Camrose.

Ellen Marie Ekdahl March 3, 1937 ~ July 16, 2019 Ellen Marie Ekdahl was born in Tofield, AB on March 3, 1937. Ellen married the love of her life, Carl Gustav Ekdahl, on June 14, 1956. They lived at the Ekdahl farm where Ellen had to learn very quickly to adjust to farm life with no running water, no electricity and only a cookstove for heating (which she had to learn to cook on). The farm was small to begin with; however, with their hard work, determination, and seven children, Ellen and Gustav grew the farm to support their large family. In 1987, after all the children had moved out, Ellen worked part-time at Camrose Lutheran College until she retired in 2002. Ellen was always so proud of the farm, she loved having visitors, sharing stories and laughter with many people. Ellen continued to reside at the farm after Gustav passed in 2004, taking pride in maintaining the yard with her beloved John Deere lawnmower, and having many neighbours and friends to look in on her. She stayed involved with the farm until 2018. Ellen loved to cook and everyone especially enjoyed her swedish meatballs, her raspberry jam, and homemade buns. She was well known in the Kingman community for many things, one of them being the famous Lutefisk Meal held in Kingman every December, which she helped to prepare every year. She enjoyed going to the Kingman Baptist Church every Sunday until her health made it impossible. In 2014, due to health issues, Ellen moved into Camrose. With more help than we could ever mention from Auntie Louisa, Brenda Garrison and in this last year Hanna De Jesus, whom we are forever thankful for, Ellen was able to stay in her home until the time came for her to pass away peacefully at St. Mary’s Hospital on July 16, 2019. Ellen will be sadly missed by her children Ron (Viktoriia Stri), Gordon, Glen (Tina), Kevin (Marla) and Keith (Trena Anderson); fifteen grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by her sister Ruth Gibson, sister-in-law Louisa Undin, many nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Gustav; her daughters Barb and Janette; sister Martha Westfall; and brother Rudolf Undin. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 30, 2019 from the CityLights Church, 4920-48 Street, Camrose with Pastor Richard Schultz officiating. Interment will take place at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 30, 2019 in the Kingman Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Ellen’s memory may be made to St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation, Kingman Cemetery or to the Kingman Baptist Church. Lydia Rachel Braun Thiessen August 25, 1930 ~ July 8, 2019 Lydia Rachel Braun Thiessen, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother was born August 25, 1930, at Grunthal, MB to Peter and Lena Braun. While visiting her daughter in Ontario she unexpectedly passed away on July 8, 2019 to wake to a glorious eternal morning. At the age of 13, mom accepted Christ as her personal Savior and committed her life to him. She was baptized into the Church of God in Christ Mennonite. She loved Jesus and her desire was that her family, friends and everyone she met would surrender their lives to Him. Her early years were spent in the Grunthal - Kleefeld MB area. As a child she grew up in a happy home, singing and laughter were often heard. A traumatic memory in early childhood was when home and earthly possessions were lost in a house fire. She often would reminisce of some of her occupations she had through her youth years. Stories she told of time spent working in the canneries in Ontario and as a telephone operator in Steinbach were fondly recalled. Relationships developed through these years were treasured for a lifetime. During the summer of 1956 mom and her sister traveled to Abbotsford, BC, where she met Dad Thiessen, love quickly blossomed and after a short engagement they were married on November 11, 1956, by minister Alph Baerg. To this union were born seven children: four sons and three daughters. They resided in Abbotsford until 1976, when they moved with their family to the Strome/Heisler area. In their retirement years Dad and Mom lived in the Edberg area. Her last earthly home was at Rosealta Lodge in Camrose. We are grateful to the staff and her acquaintances there for the friendship they provided her. Our home and farm was a busy place, Mom worked hard and gave herself to her husband and children, she loved each of us unconditionally. Her expression of love to us children and others was often displayed through her loving touch. Her mother-heart reached out to welcome and embrace the grandchildren and great-grandchildren as each one was born. Mom was known for her hospitality, generosity and a love for people. The doors of our parents’ home were always open, anyone was welcome to stop in, a cup of tea was often shared with a neighbour and many a bouquet of flowers were sent. A rewarding time in our parents’ lives was some months spent in Christian service at a CPS unit in Nova Scotia. Wherever she went her colourful and outgoing personality rewarded her many friends. Dad passed away April 29, 2011. Mom dearly missed Dad and longed for the day they would reunite. We thank God for a Christian mother who taught us to pray, to love God, and serve him. We mourn but with the hope of meeting again. Those left to cherish fond memories are her children, Gerald (Vickie), Ralph (Nancy) of Edberg; Bernie (Martha) of New Sarepta; Glen (Barb) of Abbotsford, BC; Brenda (Jordan) Isaac of New Norway, AB; Mary (Dwight) Reimer of Westlock; Carla (Frank) Goossen of Alexandria, ON; Leanne of St. Albert; 27 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters-in-law, Jessie Braun and Leona Braun; and brother-in-law Jake Thiessen. She was predeceased by her husband Carl and daughter-in-law Connie. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 13, 2019, at Edberg Mennonite Church, with interment in Edberg Lakeview Cemetery. Council to consider continuance of City Swan Program By Lori Larsen
During a committee of whole meeting on July 15, City of Camrose administration presented a report recommending council consider ending the City Swan Program, prior to release of the swans to Mirror Lake and Duggan Pond in 2020. City of Camrose community services general manager Ryan Poole expressed some concerns on behalf of administration, that have arisen regarding the swans. “The first concern is public safety,” explained Poole. According to the report presented to council over the 20 years that the Swan Program has been operating, there have been five formal complaints about the swans attacking members of the public. “This year we have actually had three recorded incidents of people getting hurt,” explained Poole. “One individual ended up in the hospital for an evening with a injured wrist, a very young child was attacked by the swans and was emotionally bruised and the last incident involved a family that were chased out on the road by the swans. Poole said every year there are reports of the swans’ aggressive behaviour, likely because they are very protective of their territory. The second concern Poole brought forth to council is the humane treatment of the swans. He said that despite having trained staff that spend a good deal of time and effort ensuring the well being of the swans, the City is not a zoo and there have been concerns as to whether or not housing the swans in an indoor abode for the long winter and clipping their wings, is in the best interest of the swans. Poole explained that due to the small area the swans are contained in during the winter, they can become susceptible to bumblefoot (infection found on the bottom of the feet). He also explained that clipping the swans’ wings may
make them more vulnerable, hence why they may be more aggressive. Since its inception in 1995, the Swan Program has had 46 different swans 20 of which deceased, either by accident or as the result of health issues and five of which were lost. Poole said that the cost of keeping the swans is also a factor, albeit not as pressing as public safety and the humane treatment. “On average the program costs around $43,000 annually. Some of those costs (staff-
the years in regards to the Swan Program. “There have been numerous requests from the high school for their physical education program, Augustana for their outdoor education program and the Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute for their outdoor program. “There has been limited use because of the fear of swans being chased out onto the road and getting aggressive even in the water with the boaters,” said Poole.
of the City brand, but that he also understood there are telling arguments for each side. Lindstrand suggested investigating ways to attract other species of birds to Mirror Lake and voiced concern about containing the swans over the winter months. “Its like jailing the birds for eight months and that doesn’t sound like very humane treatment.” Councillor Kevin Hycha inquired as to the

ing) we would incur either way, but some are specific to the Swan Program such as feed, some utility costs, vet bills and transportation when swans are traded out.” Poole indicated that should the Swan Program cease to exist, the staffing time could then be reallocated to other needs within the City and that the facility used to house the swans over the winter months, could be repurposed as a staff facility. “There are plans for an expansion of the park shop and we could save significantly on that expansion if we were able to renovate the existing swan abode and make that the staff facility and storage for small equipment.” Poole also discussed the lack of usability of Mirror Lake (specifically) for non motorized boating, another issue that has arisen over
Poole suggested to council that any decision regarding the Swan Program should be made prior to when the mating pair begins breeding and the City is then left with the cygnets that they are not allowed to release to the wild. City of Camrose parks director Ken Krueger added that he understands the long standing history of the Swan Program, but he too has concerns for the humane treatment of the swans. “We do the best we can to give them the best care, but they are wild animals. If it is council’s wish to continue with the program, we will continue to give the best care we can; however, I would ask council to consider the fair and humane treatment of the swans.” Councillor Max Lindstrand said there may be concerns about public reaction because the swans have been a recognized part
disposition of the present four swans, should the program cease. Poole said they would begin by trying to contact breeders who would be willing to take the birds. The matter will come back to council for a decision prior to budget process in November; in the event council decides to cease the Swan Program then the birds would not have to be transported during the colder months.
Alberta Agriculture and Forestry Minister Devin Dreeshen and Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely will be holding a Farming Community consultation with local producers on Thursday, July 25 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Norsemen Inn to review needs and changes in agriculture. “Alberta farmers need common-sense rules that promote farm safety–not process, not red tape. We’re going to repeal Bill 6, and I plan to meet with farmers this summer to develop the legislation to replace it,” said Dreeshen. Albertans can also participate in an online survey to help shape the future of farm workplace legislation. Farms and ranches operate differently than other employers in Alberta. The previous government’s Bill 6 was passed with limited public input and in the face of strong opposition from farmers. This government will repeal Bill 6 and introduce the Farm Freedom and Safety Act after a period of extensive consultation. Minister Dreeshen will undertake a consultation tour this summer, meeting with farmers, ranchers and organizations across the province. Workplace rules must balance the unique economic pressures of farming, with the need for a f lexible, common-sense workplace legislation for farms and ranches. Dreeshen wants to hear
from farmers, ranchers, workers and other stakeholders on how to improve workplace legislation for the agriculture sector. The sessions will provide feedback and be used to help establish the right balance of workplace legislation. You can take the online survey until Aug. 31 to share your thoughts. Employment Standards: explore flexibility on rules like hours of work, holiday and vacation pay, days of rest, minimum wage and youth employment. Occupational Health and Safety: identify basic safety standards and any special requirements. Workers Compensation: explore choice of market insurance or WCB and identify basic coverage standards such as medical support, back to work support, and loss of income protection. Labour Relations: identify any areas of improvement under the Labour Relations Code. Your input will help inform the Farm Freedom and Safety Act that will be introduced in the fall to reduce the regulatory burden on farmers and ranchers, while still ensuring basic safety standards. Visit website www. alberta.ca/farm-freedomand-safety- en ga gem ent. aspx to take the survey. Call 310-FARM (3276) if you have questions or would like help filling out the survey over the telephone.
Drowning prevention week encourages awareness By Lori Larsen
Every year some Albertans lose their lives to drowning accidents, that more than likely could have been prevented. The Lifesaving Society of Canada has declared July 21 to 27 National Drowning Prevention Week in hopes of increasing awareness and education on the issues of drowning problems and the hundreds of lives that could be saved. City of Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer signed a proclamation declaring, and in recognition of, National Drowning Pre-
vention Week, encouraging residents to be part of a Water Smart community. According to the 2018 Drowning Report, less than 20 per cent of the Canadian population lives in a rural area, yet 36 per cent of all drowning fatalities occurred in a rural environment. Preliminary reports indicated that in 2017 there were 283 unintentional water-related deaths in Canada. Statistically speaking, 84 per cent of drownings occurring while boating are the result of the victim
not wearing a PFD or lifejacket, while 36 per cent were the result of consuming alcohol. Lifesaving Society Canada urges Canadians and residents of the City of Camrose and surrounding areas to supervise children who are in and around the water, to refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages while participating in aquatic activities and to always wear a Personal Floatation Device or certified lifejacket when boating on any water body.
Submitted City of Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer signed a proclamation declaring July 21 to 27 National Drowning Prevention Week, in the presence of Lifesaving Society of Alberta and NWT drowning prevention officer Julianna Matson, left and executive director Kelly Carter.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Last year’s saskatoon pie baking contest had 24 delicious entries.
Saskatoon pie baking event By Lori Larsen
Combine saskatoons, homemade pie crust, hungry judges and spectators and you have the recipe for another Saskatoon Pie Baking Competition. On T hu rsday, Aug. 1 come to the Downtown Camrose Farmers’ Market and be part of the excitement of the annual contest, sponsored by Battle River Watershed Alliance. “Saskatoons are one of the hidden treasures of the Battle River Watershed,” said BRWA education and outreach coordinator Mackenzie Durocher. “They are one of few edible native fruits that grows in great abundance throughout the area. Saskatoon berries have provided a source of food for both human and animal communities for thousands of years, and the adventure of picking your own berries can often be just as fun as eating or baking with them.” New and experienced bakers, tried and true or new innovative recipes– all are welcome. There is no entry fee; however, the pies must be homemade and include an 80 per cent ratio of saskatoons. Last year, there were 24 entries and the organizers are hoping for at least that many again this year. Handpicked local judges will be tasting and judging on a variety of criteria at 4:30 p.m. Marketgoers will also be given an opportunity to sample pies and vote on their favourite for the People’s Choice Award beginning at 5 p.m. Winners will be announced by 6 p.m. Please note that a refrigerator will not be available and that pie plates should either be disposable or can be retrieved after 6 p.m. “We hope that folks in the watershed use this pie-baking competition as an opportunity to explore their local natural spaces or support local U-pick fruit farms, and have fun baking a pie to celebrate this native berry,” remarked Durocher. For more details, telephone the Battle River Watershed Alliance office at 780-672-0276.
