ALWAYS BETTER – ALWAYS BETTER READ Like most farmers Robert Lindsay, who farms southeast of Camrose, tries his best to accurately predict the type of weather that likely lies ahead. His current year’s hay cut is taking place significantly later than most years. To blame? Fickle weather!

WHILE THE SUN SHINES

Non-typical weather patterns create challenges and also opportunities, depending on one’s situation. For some people, unusual weather, such as the 2019 soggy summer of the area, has no doubt “dampened” plans for outdoor events and general fun. By contrast, extreme heart of previous, recent summers has proved to be a windfall for select businesses, likely at the expense of others. Weather can have a dramatic effect on business revenue and expenses. For those in the business of farming, and those who are suppliers to the sector, long stretches of less than perfect weather can be a frustrating dichotomy. Drake Landing

Sure, lots of people think it would be good to develop sources of energy besides coal and oil. Lots of people–some of them the same people–also don’t want oil to go away as part of our economy. Neat trick, that. For the long term, there’s also the point about having energy sources that are renewable. And, of course, it would be good to have sources of energy that don’t pollute water, air or land. Sure there are renewable sources of energy like wind and solar, but you can’t count on them all the time, right? Not necessarily. Let’s hone in on solar. The problem with solar energy is that the sun doesn’t shine all the time. But what if you could store solar energy for times when the sun isn’t shining? Well, a real live community is demonstrating how that can work. What’s more, this community has been doing it for 12 years. So where in the world is this happening? Right here in Alberta–in Okotoks, just south of Calgary. It’s called Drake Landing Solar Community. You can look it up. You can even visit Okotoks and drive through it–a 52-home neighbourhood designed to use solar energy to heat space and water in all the homes all year. Yes, even in winter. How does it work? Drive down the front streets of Drake Landing Solar Community and it looks like any other subdivision. Drive down the back alleys and you’ll notice solar panels on the garages. About 800 solar panels absorb the sun’s energy and heat a glycol solution that runs through a piping system. The heated liquid travels along the roof overhang, down the end of the garage and into an underground system within the community’s Energy Centre. As the heated liquid travels through the pipework, heat is transferred to the surrounding earth. The earth temperature reaches 80 degrees Celsius by the end of each summer. When winter arrives and the homes require space heating, the heated water passes to the short-term storage tank in the Energy Centre and is then circulated to the homes through the district heating loop.

UNSUNG HEROES

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Avey Osterwalder and Colby Jones received the Thom Goetz Unsung Hero award. It is awarded in memory of sound man and Camrose music supporter, Thom Goetz. It is awarded annually to a student or students who exemplify citizenship, work ethic and a cooperative effort in band class. They foster strong relationships with their classmates and with their teachers.

Results

Of course there’s been constant tracking and evaluation of the experimental project, which began in 2007. In its 12th year of reliable operation, there have been no unscheduled interruptions in heating delivery. That’s more than I can say about the neighbourhood where I live. Last winter, we lost heat for many hours because of a power failure and it took days to restore buildings to comfortable room temperatures. Back to Drake Landing Solar Community. During the 201516 winter, 100 per cent of the heat required by the houses for space heating was supplied by solar energy. Between 2012 and 2016, 96 per cent of heat was provided by solar energy. A summary of the 10-year evaluation said: “Overall, the system has successfully demonstrated the reliable operation of a high solar fraction solar district heating system with seasonal thermal storage in a very cold climate. Although the Drake Landing system is too small to be economically competitive with the current very low price of natural gas in North America, subsequent feasibility studies show that larger systems of similar design can deliver solar energy at about half the cost compared to Drake Landing.”

ELKS DONATIONS

Hope

I know I’m not the only one with concerns about the health of our planet–the only home we have. Scientists tell us we have about eleven years before human-caused damage to our air, water and land is not reversible. As a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, that concerns me. It’s personal. I know I’m also not the only one who often feels helpless to make a difference. My blue recycle bag of paper and tin cans seems a puny contribution to the global challenge. Drake Landing Solar Community gives me hope. ***

It’s all in the stars By Lori Larsen

Clear summer skies are glorious at night, filled with the twinkling of millions of stars and planets on an indigo backdrop. Just gazing at them can have one wondering about what exists beyond the earth. On Aug. 1 at 7 p.m., Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society presents an evening with the stars, featuring University of Alberta Augustana Campus associate professor of mathematics and physics Dr. Gerhard Lotz, to be held at the Stoney Creek Centre, located at 5320-39 Avenue. Dr. Lotz has been

teaching physics and mathematics at Augustana since 1990 and thrives on extending his fascination with the subject matter to his students. Although his specific research is in theoretical nuclear physics, Lotz enjoys learning more about and presenting interesting aspects of physics, such as astronomy, nuclear energy, and the nature of time, to broader audiences. Attendees of any Wildlife Stewardship summer sessions are encouraged to put their name into the draw box for a prize that will be drawn during the last session of the season.

Caregivers carry a heavy load By Camrose Seniors Coalition

Being the primary caregiver for a person who needs long-term or palliative care is a complex daily undertaking. Caregivers carry a very heavy load physically, mentally and emotionally. They are often afraid to leave their loved one and they may not know where to turn for help. There is very little time to care for themselves without feeling guilty about it. Most caregivers are angels who love deeply, are fully committed to their loved one, and demonstrate great compassion and strength every day. Caregivers are doing important and significant work. They are their loved one’s most valuable asset. Consequently, they deserve support and time for revitalization. The US (Understanding Support) Group brings together caregivers who share common experiences or problems and provides a safe place for people to connect. Caregivers can share their story, talk about their situation and express their feelings,

knowing that what is said in the room stays in the room. Strict confidentiality is expected from all who attend. The group provides a safe place that is friendly, co-operative and pleasant. This environment is an opportunity for newcomers to discuss their feelings, which may include anger, frustration, anxiety and depression. In the group, caregivers are invited to come together to achieve common goals. As well, they learn new and practical ways of coping and navigating the uphill road they travel by sharing their experiences. Joan Willoughby, who started the US Group in 2011, said that her journey was much easier when she had the support of people who understand her journey. Joan’s hope is that each caregiver knows they are not alone because they have been heard and understood, and her wish is that each person will leave each meeting feeling better than they did before the meeting. Recently, the US Group has come under the banner of the Hospice

Society of Camrose and District. This move brings the US support group in alignment with other hospice programs which caregivers, and the recipients of their care, may access without fees. It is the intention of Hospice to ensure open and easy access to all of its programs. One way this is accomplished is by providing Nav-CARE volunteers for US participant families. These volunteers can sit with loved ones so that caregivers can attend the meetings. The Camrose Caregivers Support Group, the US Group, provides Understanding Support for people who now are, or have been, the caregiver for a loved one with chronic illnesses. The US Group meets at the lower level of the Mirror Lake Centre on the first and third Tuesday of each month from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Contact Joan at 780-672-9579 or Joy (Hospice volunteer coordinator) at 587-322-9269. For additional connections and support in our community, contact CDSS 780-672-0141.

New candidate

By Kevin Sorenson, MP, Battle River-Crowfoot

In my last column, I said I was confident that the good people of Battle River-Crowfoot would once again put their trust in the Conservative candidate in the Oct. 21 federal election. On July 17, after four days of voting in various parts of the riding, Damien Kurek won the nomination to be that Conservative candidate. Throughout this nomination process, I was very impressed by all three candidates and thank them for their dedication to the Conservative Party of Canada. I also thank the Conservative riding members who attended town halls to hear what the candidates had to say and took the time to vote. I have worked alongside Damien for many years: first, after he became a member of the board of directors for our electoral district riding association; and second, after hiring him to work in my constituency office in Camrose. He has assisted constituents on complicated issues and has represented me at many community events when I was unable to attend due to Parliamentary duties in Ottawa. Damien was such a natural choice, given his longterm commitment to this riding and the fact he was born and raised in Consort where he still helps on the fifth generation, family run farm. More importantly, Damien is extremely passionate about local issues, which he will be able to bring to the attention of federal government members. I am leaving my constituents in the very capable and compassionate hands of a Conservative candidate who knows this riding and the people in it as well as I do. Damien, as well as the rest of the Conservative team of candidates across the country, will have a positive vision to put forward to voters. This vivid picture of how we believe Canada should look is based on strong policies including our one on immigration. We believe that the Liberal government has failed to preserve the integrity of our immigration system and to deal effectively with the unprecedented level of illegal border crossings. As predicted in one of my previous columns, the number of crossings is on the rise this summer and the Liberal government is misleading Canadians by claiming otherwise. This June, there were 300 more crossing than in June 2018. Last June, if you will recall, there was an unprecedented number of illegal asylum seekers for whom the Liberal government has failed to address. While public safety minister, Ralph Goodale, stated that many of these border crossers do not have valid asylum claims and will be rejected, to date, only two percent have been removed. This situation is extremely serious especially when the findings of the auditor general are factored in. As I reported several weeks ago, the auditor general found that there is currently a backlog of 71,000 asylum claims and wait times for a hearing could reach five years. An Andrew Scheer led Conservative government proposes to work to immediately restore fairness, order and compassion to our immigration system. We will put an end to illegal border crossings at unofficial points of entry like Roxham Road in Quebec. We will also close the loophole in the Safe Third Country Agreement that allows some people to skip the line and avoid the queue. These defensive measures will be balanced with our safeguarding and emphasis on economic immigration. This means setting levels consistent with what is in Canada’s best interests. A Conservative government will stand up for families by ensuring spouses and children can be reunited. We will also ensure there is better recognition of credentials and existing skills so new Canadians can more easily gain employment in their field of work to support their families and be contributing citizens of this country. Canada is the greatest country in the world given our solid foundation of enduring values, democratic institutions, the rule of law, and fundamental and universal human rights. Alberta Pharmacare working group optimistic By Murray Green

The Alberta Pharmacare working group is encouraged after the advisory council for the Implementation of National Pharmacare’s interim report. Its initial recommendations outline six core principles for national pharmacare and call for the creation of a national drug agency; a comprehensive, evidence-based

national drug formulary; investment in drug data and information technology. The Alberta Pharmacare is comprised of a coalition of seniors’, labour and advocacy organizations, has been active in engaging with Albertans, lobbying MPs, mailing letters to federal representatives and collecting petition signatures to advocate for a national,

universal, public drug program for all Canadians. The report marks an encouraging first step towards the development of a national pharmacare program. Recommendations and principles outlined indicate that the council will be recommending a universal, singlepayer, accessible, comprehensive and portable model when their final report is released later this spring. “Pharmacare is the unfinished business of our Medicare,” said Judy Lederer, president of the Edmon-

ton Area Council of the Congress of Union Retirees of Canada. “Canadians have been calling for national prescription drug coverage for decades, and we have waited long enough. Now is the time.” The report follows extensive consultations, including 150 written submissions and over 15,000 responses to an online questionnaire, in which Canadians made clear that our current patchwork of public and private drug plans is insufficient. households and 21 per cent of households in Alberta are unable to afford their prescribed medications. “Medications should not be a luxury; and no Canadians should have to choose between food and heat, or paying for their prescriptions,” said Sandra Azocar, executive director of Friends of Medicare. As they await the final blueprint that will guide the implementation of a national pharmacare program, the Alberta Pharmacare working group will campaign for a plan that meets the needs of all Canadians. “It marks a positive interim report on pharmacare,” said Heather Erlen, Alberta representative of the Canadian Labour Congress. “The time is now to keep the pressure on to ensure a truly universal, single-payer, comprehensive system for Canada.” Since the announcement, there’s a lot misinformation and misunderstanding regarding core aspects of the pharmacare debate. Canadians are cautious about policy change including the introduction of the national pharmacare proposed program that could put patients, innovation and innovative industries at risk.

Alberta Agriculture and Forestry Minister Devin Dreeshen and Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely held a Farm Freedom and Safety Act consultation with local producers on July 25 at the Norsemen Inn to review needs and changes in agriculture. “A couple of weeks ago, we had our initial kick-off with 30 commodity groups and we just wanted to ask them questions to see if we are on the right track. From the feedback we got from them, it has allowed us to kick off these consultations. In the next six weeks, we have 20-plus stops across the province,” said Dreeshen, also a farmer from east of Innisfail. “We want to take these to all regions of the province to make sure we are hearing directly from farmers. It will all be led by local MLAs, organized by them, and Jackie has done a great job in getting a lot of people out today.” Albertans can also participate in an online survey to help shape the future of farm workplace legislation. “We don’t want to

be top down, we want to make sure everyone has a say in this legislation. If someone couldn’t be here, they can complete a survey online.” Minister Dreeshen will undertake a consultation tour this summer, meeting with farmers, ranchers and organizations across the province. “It was a great twoplus hours (in Camrose) of meetings and sessions. We have great staff collecting all of the data to ensure we have a sense of what farmers are expecting from this,” Dreeshen added. The sessions provide valuable feedback to help establish workplace legislation to replace Bill 6. “It was good to hear the story of modern agriculture. Farms in Alberta are unique in the fact they have an environmental footprint, new technology, the size of equipment, but also the natural environment we have here. We heard about licensing and licensing for young teens, and to me, that hits home a lot. You have friends growing up, and getting licenses lined up was always an issue. Previous governments haven’t fixed it, so we want to make it a priority, because it impacts farms a lot. What I heard loud and clear in the campaign is insurance. People want to use their own insurance instead of mandatory WCB insurance, for whatever reason. That is something we heard again today in Camrose,” said Dreeshen. He was surprised that the temporary worker program didn’t need to be adjusted. “We heard from someone that they didn’t want it to be a path for citizenship, which was different than people telling

me it is a great way for foreign workers to become citizens. It was nice to hear another view (that they are no longer temporary workers if they become regular citizens), that it is only a temporary program like it is designed to be. It was nice that was re-enforced,” added Dreeshen. “It did come up at our federal meeting on labour that foreign workers is a path to citizenship. It is good that not everyone views it that way.” About 120 local producers discussed employment standards, labour relations, workers’ compensation, occupational health and safety, farmer-led research and topics that were unique to this part of the province. “I was blown away with the positive mood in the room in Camrose. People wanted to be heard and help make changes,” he said. “I’m glad everyone came out and embraced this opportunity to voice their concerns and give input on what they want changed, so I’m glad we had such a good turnout,” said Jackie. “I want people to know they still can be heard by going online.” You can take the online survey until Aug. 31 to share your thoughts on employment standards, explore flexibility on rules like hours of work, holiday and vacation pay, days of rest, minimum wage and youth employment. Visit website www. alberta.ca/farm-freedomand-safety-engagement. aspx to take the survey. Call 310-FARM (3276) if you have questions or would like help filling out the survey over the telephone.

Focus on the fun

I knew immediately that I wanted to buy a souvenir from the fellow sitting in a camp chair beside his van, near the gas station where we were refueling our motorhome. He was wearing suspenders, had a cheery beard and had cut the top off a mini watermelon, eating it out with a spoon. Beside him was a door adorned with wooden faces carved from cottonwood, with oversized noses and lots of character. I ambled over with my three youngsters and learned each carving took him two days to create; he lived in the woods; and he sold the carvings to pay for food. He may have been joking, but I didn’t think so. I made an offer, he accepted, and then my husband came over in time to make the final selection. Usually we discuss what type of souvenir to bring back from a holiday, but who can resist someone using a watermelon as a bowl? As we were heading back into the motorhome, he gave us life advice, telling us to “focus on the fun.” Well, yeah, we were on holiday, that is what we were doing. But his words came back to me more than a few times as we struggled a bit with the poor weather. On our eight-day canoe trip, we had eight days when it rained at least a bit each day. Two different mornings were spent paddling in a steady rain, the kids hunkered down and looking miserable. My littlest asked when we were going home; he wanted to sleep in his new log bunk bed again. We started talking a bit about contentment and being happy wherever you are. When we are at home, we are happy to be at home. When we are on holiday, we are happy to be on holiday. Some days we thought of things we were thankful for (the rain didn’t start until after the tent was packed up; I saw the sun a minute ago; we left the mosquitoes behind when we got back on the lake…) It has been a painfully slow start to summer (warm weather, come to me!), but what we could control was how we responded. The day of the canoe trip when rain fell on us for 26 hours, my little boys suggested in the afternoon that we go swimming. It was warmish with a light rain and our tent was set up. I didn’t agree at first, but then my husband built a fire to warm up beside afterwards. We grabbed our suits and before I knew it, we were running across the smooth stones and sand, splashing and erupting with laughter. Near the start of the trip on Canada Day, we went for short hikes to different waterfalls. At our last one, we were returning to the motorhome when it started to rain lightly. (One day we even listed the different ways to describe rainpour, mist, spit, drizzle, sun shower, deluge, flood.) We were all wearing red shirts and we started to run, to the smiles of people heading in the other direction. As we ran, we said, “Nothing to see here, just a family all dressed in red going for a run.” Our cheeks hurt from smiling wide as we giggled our way out of the rain. The kids even suggested that we continue the trend and dress all in green the next day, blue the day after that and so on, but the idea lost momentum. Sometimes when we were paddling, I would think about the word connect and what it means to connect as a family. I decided that laughter and moments of awe were key. I thought back to when I watched and helped each child cup their hands underwater and feel a squirming tadpole against their skin at a beach where we stopped for lunch that was inexplicably home to hundreds of tadpoles. I thought about our last night when the water felt warmer and we swam and swam, bopping in the waves in the rough lake, running on the soft sand back and forth when we needed to warm up. I thought about our beautiful island camp, and how a couple paddled up and looked around at the other tent site. Our kids stood quietly while they walked around. My husband said, “Don’t make it look so Kumbaya around here” (I had never heard Kumbaya used as a verb before, but I love it) and I instructed my children to run up and down the hill a bit. I mean, we didn’t want to let them think that the kids were always so quiet. My daughter reported after a few minutes, “Yup, they kept going” and we laughed. I thought about the hummingbird who inspected our tent on my daughter’s birthday, causing us to hold our breath as we sat by the fire ring. It hovered over us so close and for so long that we saw the underneath colour of its tail feathers. Laughter and more moments of awe, here we come!

Did you know that outdoor water use accounts for nearly 70% of a household’s water usage?

XERISCAPING is landscaping that requires little to no watering.

How to Xeriscape in your yard: • Add mulch. Mulch traps moisture in the soil, prevents evaporation, and provides nutrients to your garden as it breaks down. • Build a rain garden. A rain garden is a cluster of plants on a hill or slope that prevents runoff, and allows you to maximize your water use. • Use drought resistant plants. These plants naturally require less water and can survive periods of drought. For more information on how you can conserve water, visit www.camrose.ca/BeWise

Healthy eating is more than the foods you eat By Murray Green

The Food Guide that many of us grew up with focused on food choices. But we now know that our eating habits are just as important to health as the foods we choose. Busy Canadians want simple guidance that they can trust to help them make healthy food choices for themselves and their families. In launching the new Canada’s Food Guide, Ginette Petitpas Taylor, minister of health, emphasized that healthy eating is about more than the foods Canadians eat. The new Food Guide is an online suite of resources that better meets the needs of different users, including the general public, policy makers and health professionals. This includes mobilefriendly web content to encourage Canadians to eat healthy whenever and wherever they go. Canada’s new dietary guidance includes concrete advice for Canadians on healthy food choices and healthy eating habits. This advice includes eating plenty of vegetables and fruits, eating protein foods, choosing whole grain foods and making water your drink of choice. Healthy eating is more than the foods you eat. The Food Guide encourages Canadians to cook more often, enjoy food, be mindful of eating habits and eat meals with others. Canada’s Food Guide is intended for all Canadians. Health Canada is working to ensure that the revised Food Guide is inclusive. The new Food Guide is an integral part of Canada’s Healthy Eating Strategy, which aims to make the healthier choice the easier choice for all Canadians. “Healthy eating is more than the foods you eat. It’s about your whole relationship with food. The new Food Guide gets to the heart of this relationship and gives Canadians concrete advice that they can follow to make healthy eating part of their day,” said Taylor. “Healthy eating is an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and helps prevent chronic diseases like Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers. The new Canada’s Food

Guide not only encourages healthy eating for all Canadians, but also teaches us that healthy eating is more than the foods we eat – it includes such important aspects as sharing meals with others, cooking more often and eating mindfully,” said Dr. Theresa Tam, chief public health officer of Canada. “Dietitians are passionate about the potential of food to enhance lives and improve health. We commend Health Canada on

taking a broader approach to eating by providing evidencebased guidance on not only what to eat, but how to eat. We are also pleased to see inclusion and consideration of traditional foods, cultural diversity and environmental sustainability. Health promotion is an essential pillar in food policy and the new Food Guide tools and resources will support the creation of healthier food environments for Canadians.”

BRCF grants schizophrenia society Submitted

The Battle River Community Foundation recently awarded a grant of $2,500 to the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta for the Camrose Chapter. The grant is from income from the Foundation’s Community Funds, created by donors who have allowed the Foundation Board to select grant recipients from among applications received from the many charitable organizations throughout the region. Community Funds allow the Foundation to respond to changing community needs over time. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects and facilities, such as those offered by the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta, in East Central Alberta which benefit local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Com-

The automotive section of

Makarowski finds success on the track By Murray Green

Taylor Makarowski, formerly of Daysland, has been racing dragsters since she was 14 years old. “When I was 14, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which is a type of cancer. They sent me out to the track to have a fun day and forget about the hospital stuff. I met the right person, Craig Anstead, who owns our team of cars and he put me into the children’s car just to go have fun for the day,” Taylor explained. “I ended up getting full sponsorships in juniors. When I was 16, I received my license to drive the twoseat dragster, and at 17, my parents surprised me with a dragster and I’ve been driving it ever since.” She began driving junior dragsters and moved up to running her Slightly Twisted rear-end alcohol dragster in 2013 three years later, and has been hanging around race tracks in western Canada since. “I have always had a love for cars. We have won a lot of different events. Your driving definitely improves over time. Being in the junior dragster program really gave me an advantage moving up into the big cars. You learn the good habits right from the beginning. You learn how to time the tree (lights), how to handle cars going that fast,” continued Taylor. “That’s 200 miles an hour, not kilometres. I don’t think people realize how fast we are going in that short distance.” Don’t blink at the wrong time – when she puts her foot to the medal, Taylor can reach 203 miles per hour over a quarter mile in less than seven seconds (6.94).

TRACK STAR

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Taylor Makarowski has been driving dragsters around the track since she was 14 years old. Now in the adult class, she has reached 203 miles per hour in a quarter mile.

“A lot can go wrong in seven seconds. Being in the younger program first really teaches you how to handle dragsters. It is not like driving a regular car.” Taylor is not your average dragster driver. She flies across the track with her 509 Olds engine with a two-speed power glide transmission. “A track will call us and book us into a show. We can run three races or actually race, whatever they want us to do to put on a show for people. In our two-seater, we give rides to people. I have

FUN FACTS

Drag racing is a type of motor racing in which cars compete, usually two at a time, to be first to cross a set finish line. The race follows a short, straight course from a standing start over a measured distance, most commonly a quarter mile (1,320 ft./402 m). Electronic timing and speed sensing systems have been used to record race results since the 1960s. The history of automobiles and motorcycles being used for drag racing is nearly as long as the history of motorized vehicles themselves and is a regulated motorsport. Modern races are started electronically by a system known as a Christmas tree, which consists of a column of lights for each driver/lane, and two light beam sensors per lane on the track at the starting line.

some good sponsors, mostly my dad,” Taylor laughed. It doesn’t hurt to have her dad Colin Makarowski as her crew chief either. He is responsible for keeping her on the track even when she makes a mistake at high speeds. “It isn’t so much of a circuit for us, as whatever track wants us to put on a show at. Castrol Raceway near Edmonton is home for us.” Twisted Motorsports is a professional drag racing team based out of Edmonton. They have been involved in drag racing for more than 18 years and currently campaign a nostalgia alcohol funny car, blown alcohol top dragster, junior dragster and the world’s only front passenger two-seat dragster. “Driving a dragster is a lot of fun and you get a little bit of adrenaline going once you are strapped in. For the most part, it is fun,” said Taylor. She races against Funny Cars and against other veteran guys. “She has earned the respect of other drivers because they know she can handle the car,” said Colin. “They know they have

to bring it or she is going to hand it to them. It is more of a reaction from the fans when they realize she is getting suited up, that this smaller driver is getting into the car. They think she’s too small, she can’t do that. Taylor has proved she can do it. She has had a few incidents,

but that is going to happen and it is good experience. Driving dragsters is something you have or you don’t,” said Colin. Taylor knew she wanted to drive dragsters the minute she tested one out. Look for her at the track this summer.

Raymond Kingo Hansen February 17, 1944 ~ July 23, 2019 Ray Hansen passed away on July 23, 2019, at the age of 75 years. Ray was born in Camrose, Alberta on February 17, 1944. He was raised by his maternal grandparents, Peder and Helga Hansen. As a young boy, he was known to many as “Sonny” and enjoyed accompanying his grandfather delivering water to Camrose residents. In 1963, Ray began his apprenticeship as a dental technician in Edmonton, and in 1969, he passed his denturist exam and opened Hansen Denture Clinic on Main Street, Camrose. The clinic moved to its current location in 1974. On March 17, 1976, Ray married Mona Van den Brink. Together, they raised two sons, Michael (Tracy) and Steven (Lesley Binning), and became proud grandparents to Landon, Ethan, Kyle, and Adam. Ray took great pride in his profession. He served on the executive of the Alberta Denturist Society for fourteen years, and during his career, he mentored over fifteen denturist students at his clinic. He had a passion for antique vehicles and always hoped to have more time to work on the ones that he had accumulated. He also enjoyed taking road trips with Mona, and travelling to Hawaii to escape the winter. In April 2019, Ray was diagnosed with advanced amyloidosis, a blood disease that he fought courageously until his passing on July 23, 2019. He will be remembered for his mischievous sense of humour, his genuine smile, and the love he had for his family, friends and community. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Mona; sons Michael (Tracy) Hansen of Camrose and Steven Hansen (Lesley Binning) of Camrose; four grandchildren Landon, Ethan, Kyle and Adam; and daughter-in-law Amanda Mooney (Chester). Ray was predeceased by his maternal grandparents Peder and Helga Hansen; his mother Lily; and his half-sister Betty-Lou Bystrom. A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, July 29, 2019 from CityLights Church, 4920-48 Street, Camrose with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. Inurnment has taken place in the Camrose Valleyview Cemetery. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Ray’s memory may be made to the Raymond Hansen Memorial Award at NAIT (https://www.nait.ca/giving/memorials/raymond-hansen) or to the charity of one’s choice. “I did some ride-alongs with Halifax police and one of the first ones I was on, I had to attend a homicide,” he said. “That got my feet wet pretty quick.” And obviously further peaked his interest in the sometimes exciting, often challenging and rewarding law enforcement industry. Ice cream treats making miracles By Murray Green

One Blizzard treat at a time, Dairy Queen helps make miracles happen. On Thursday, Aug. 8, Dairy Queen Canada’s Miracle Treat Day will continue to make miracles happen for children in hospitals across Canada. For the 17th year running, participating Dairy Queen Canada locations will donate net proceeds from all Blizzard Treats sold to 12 Children’s Miracle Network member hospitals nationwide. In Camrose, both the downtown and 48 Avenue locations will be serving Blizzards with proceeds going to a Children’s Miracle Network hospital. For Camrose customers, the funds go to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton. Several local families have been helped by the Stollery Children’s Hospital in the past. “Dairy Queen has contributed over $39 million to 12 children’s hospitals across Canada, giving thousands of kids a better,

brighter future,” said Mark Hierlihy, president and CEO of Canada’s Children’s Hospital Foundations, the non-profit which runs Children’s Miracle Network in Canada. “With every dollar raised, it is making a personal impact in the lives of Canadian children and helping us achieve our ultimate vision – if we change the health of children, we will change the health of Canada.” “At Dairy Queen Canada, we see our role as serving communities, whether that’s providing families a place to make memories and enjoy a treat in the summer, or through our partnership with Children’s Miracle Network,” said Candida Ness, senior director of marketing, Dairy Queen Canada. “We are so proud of our ability to support Miracle Treat Day and we’re grateful for the tireless work that our franchisees do year-round to make this happen.”

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Activities

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.
