This may be the best weekend of the year to spend in the country.

It’s Prairie Fun Days in Camrose County! One of the bus or self-driving stops available to you on Sunday, August 18, is Marshall Eco Farm, a minute east of St. Thomas Church near Duhamel. The Marshall family, who live off the grid, are dedicated, chemical-free market gardeners. They are equally well-known for their naturally-raised livestock. Their bountiful garden provides vegetables to chef Jesse Chambers at The Glens Grill, Montgomery Golf Course, Wetaskiwin. The family also conducts much-appreciated home deliveries to a roster of clients who strive for healthier eating. As well as a chance to taste fresh vegetables from their chemical-free garden, you will enjoy seeing, and perhaps touching, a chicken, turkey, pig or prized Scottish Highland cow or calf. You may talk to Myra (founder of the popular Myra Marshall Band and current musician/singer with the River Jacks), her multi-talented husband Colby and their energetic and hard-working children Gabriel and Lyric.

BRCF grants to Women’s Shelter Submitted

The Battle River Community Foundation recently awarded grants of $16,000 to the Camrose Women’s Shelter Society. The grants are from income from the Hugh and Betty Irving Fund, the Jack and Lily Kirschman Fund, the Darryl and Dyann Schultz Family Fund and the Beverly (Pearson) Penner and Don Penner Fund. The Hugh and Betty Irving Fund is a donor advised fund that allows the donors to recommend projects or programs for support by the Foundation. The remaining Funds are Field of Interest Funds, intended to support programs for those who have experienced family violence

or for programs in the Camrose area. The Women`s Shelter used the grants for children’s programs at the Women’s Shelter and for staff training. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects, programs and facilities, such as those offered by the Camrose Women’s Shelter Society, in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are

kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $6,350,000 to support community facilities and programs operated by organizations like the Camrose Association for Community Living. To learn more about the Camrose Women’s Shelter Society contact Nora-Lee Rear, chief executive officer, at 780-679-4975, extension 7. As far as policing the BVJ, Brisson commented that the absence of no significant criminal occurrences, equates to a successful festival. Lakes and weddings have changed

Last week, I waxed nostalgic about “going to the lake” and mentioned how much Miquelon Lake has changed since I was a kid. Now you can get there on a paved highway. There are campgrounds, lighted parking areas, a research centre. Then it was just water with a sandy beach and lots of reeds. We drove as close as possible to the lake and even lit bonfires on the beach. Someone reminded me of other things about going to Miquelon Lake in the mid-21st century. “Fond memories! Dirt roads; mud holes at the bottom of every hill. Zero gravity at the tops of the hills made your tummy feel funny. Uncle Louis always brought soft drinks, which we never had. Favourite was Orange Crush in the brown ribbed bottles. Made your eyes water. Cars with issues…flat tires, boiling radiators and general mechanical problems. In the post-war period, there were no new vehicles so everything on the road was in poor shape.” I’d forgotten that part! Going to the lake was on my mind last week because I was attending a wedding beside a lake. Turns out lakes and weddings have both changed in the past few generations. When I was growing up, you could assume a few things about weddings. The bride and groom were usually in their 20s or even late teens. The bride and groom had been dating or going together for months or sometimes a few years. The bride and groom each had a mom and a dad who were married to each other, unless they were widowed. The bride and groom deferred to family, church, community and cultural customs. The wedding was a signal that the bride and groom would now set up a household and begin to live together. Not so much now. At this wedding, the bride and groom have been together for more than a decade. They are mature adults over 30. They live in a house they own together. Though they’ve been committed to one another for years, the bride and groom didn’t assume they would marry. They came to that decision gradually. Then they took time to decide what they wanted their wedding to include. Each choice was a symbol of something important to them. They were in charge. The question of who is family was not straightforward. Both bride and groom have a mom and stepdad, and a dad and stepmom. It’s clear who the biological relatives are, but what about biological relatives of stepparents? Here are things I loved about this wedding, besides the bride and groom, of course! The lakeside setting was beautiful – the water, the trees, the birds, the flowers…on the busiest lake weekend of the summer, not one motorboat or jet-ski went by during the wedding ceremony. The best thing of all was…the guests were relatives from both sides of both bride and groom families. That included multiple ex-husbands and ex-wives, four generations of other relatives aged seven to 77, plus eight dogs and one annoyed cat. Most people had only ever met their own relatives and some of those hadn’t seen each other in decades. Some people who’d never met before were sharing accommodation. Yep, potential for tension. (I remembered a wedding at which the bride’s biggest concern was keeping her divorced mom and dad apart. Even so, her biological parents had a screaming match during the reception.) To the best of my knowledge, during our entire wedding-by-the-lake weekend, there were no worries about keeping certain people apart. Stepparents’ adult children minded the drinks table, entertained little kids, took photos and helped with set-up and take-down. Other relatives pitched in to do whatever made sense. Wives and ex-wives laughed together, completely at ease with one another. People who’d only met each other the day before said, “We made a good team.” It was a great send-off for the next phase of the bride’s and groom’s relationship. Perhaps there’s hope for world peace. ***

I’d love to hear from you! If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.

The male had allowed a female friend to stay at his place for a couple weeks, who then allowed other people to visit the home. Camrose Police are investigating the theft. A male reported that someone had entered his unlocked pick-up truck, while parked on 50 Street in the 5200 block and he is now missing his CDs. A father reported that his 20-year-old son was intoxicated and causing issues in the home. The situation was mediated by police, but a couple hours later, the son again began causing issues. The male was arrested to prevent further breach of the peace and was released when sober. TAMMY

Another Tammy recorded a smash hit in 1968, Stand by Your Man, but it certainly describes the way Tammy Graham approaches her life. As vice president of The Auto Shoppe since 1978, Tammy stood by her man Gord through the years as the business struggled at first, grew steadily, hit some rocky patches, grew more and now is Camrose’s leading collision repair centre. “She always listens,” says Gord. “She is a sounding board and a mentor and an unbelievable partner.” One of her roles at The Auto Shoppe has always been a supportive one. She’s the “social convenor,” the one who remembers staff birthdays and helps keep up morale. Now she also has a new role, safety officer, which is a natural fit for someone who cares about others the way Tammy does. Tammy has helped shape the way The Auto Shoppe does business, always putting the customer fi rst.

Iona Brager

Centra Cam’s Emergency Clothing and Furniture Depot Iona Brager has a sparkle in her eye when she talks about the new direction for Centra Cam’s Emergency Clothing and Furniture Deport. “We no longer just serve the needs of those referred to us. Last September, we opened as a thrift store and now welcome every member of the general public.” As coordinator of ECFD, Iona oversees six fellow staff members who all pitch in to accept donations, sort through product, merchandise the items they gratefully receive following garage sales and downsizing, and finally assist customers with selection and paying for their treasures. And bargains are found daily! “We sell shirts for $2 and pants for $3. Th is summer, we are selling a laundry basket of clothes for $10. We love to make people smile,” Iona notes. She is currently focusing on ways to reduce the quantity and frequency of damaged and non-saleable items dropped off after hours. Another goal is to increase the number of volunteers for occasional store shifts. “Even a few hours each month would help us greatly.”

The autobody industry doesn’t attract a lot of women. It’s a hard world of metal, power tools, loud noise and physical work. Meet Jenn Stone, not your typical autobody shop employee. As general manager, Jenn talks about her work in ways more concerned with customers than the industry norm. “My goal is having customers happy with their repairs and having the least stressful experience possible,” says Jenn with a vivacious smile. She defines success as building lasting relationships with customers and trade partners. If you’re in need of autobody collision repairs and want someone who puts your needs first, call Jenn at The Auto Shoppe and be prepared for a refreshing change.

CAREY

Carey’s responsibilities far exceed the limited time she has been with the company her parents, Gord and Tammy Graham, started 41 years ago. She is in charge of accounts payable and receivable, remittance of taxes, bank reconciliations and payroll. As a little girl, she watched as mom and dad worked hard to make The Auto Shoppe the success it is today, Camrose’s leading collision repair centre. She learned first-hand the importance of being professional, doing your best, being on time, doing what you say you are going to do and seeing a job through to completion. The best part of working at the shop, she says, is the friendly atmosphere and the feeling of family she enjoys with all the other staff members.

Marj Pudlowski Owner

Marj first started in the home décor industry more than 38 years ago and this year is celebrating 10 years since launching her own business, Marj’s Décor & More. When she began her career, most of her work was focused on interior design projects, decorating coordinating colour schemes and planning space. She still keeps her hand in that type of work, but over the years she has been drawn more and more to window fashions and the amazing products available in all kinds of styles, colors, applications and functions. Today, her business continues to expand with most of that growth coming from window coverings, thanks in large part to the referrals she receives from satisfied customers. She is an authorized dealer for Elite Window Fashions, Maxxmar and Blinds by Vertican. She also designs and installs custom draperies, which can be matched to a room’s décor as well as to bedding. Thanks to her association with a number of suppliers, she can work with her clients in meeting their goals, finding just the right window covering that fits their budget. Another reason her clients like to work with her so much is she keeps very flexible hours. She is able to meet clients on their terms, whether it’s evenings or weekends. And over the past few years, she also has noticed the benefits of flexible hours because she gets to spend more time with her five precious granddaughters!

Cusack takes home first place in triathlon By Lori Larsen

Local Camrosian 15-year-old Sidney Cusack recently took home first place in the 2019 Stettler Triathlon Tri-It (Female) race, organized by Joel Norman, with an impressive overall time of 47 minutes and 39 seconds. The race was run by females 15 years and older and competitors came from all over the province to compete in the Tri-It Female race, and at 15 years old, Sidney was one of the youngest competitors. The race consists of a 300 metre swim (Sidney’s time was five minutes and 55 seconds), 10 kilometre bike ride (Sidney’s time was 29 minutes and nine seconds) and a two and a fifth kilometre run (Sidney’s time was 12 minutes 35 seconds). For this particular race the swimming portion is completed in a pool where racers must complete 12 pool lengths (300 metres) but Sidney would like to eventually compete in a triathlon that includes open water swimming. This was Sidney’s third time participating in the Stettler run, but she has been competing in triathlon for four years and prior to that was a competitive swimmer in Edson. “I was very interested in running and swimming when I first started and was good at running and swimming so I thought I may as well try the biking.” She began triathlon races as a method of cross training but soon realized this was her passion. “It’s one of the harder sports because there are no breaks in between, but it is so good for endurance and strength,” which she explained helped her with the sport of basketball. She completed the Wetaskiwin race this year where she placed eighth. Unfortunately due to a miscount of her pool lengths she actually ended up swimming an extra 100 metres. Despite this throwing her out of the running for a higher placing, Sidney showed true sportsmanship, grateful that volunteers came out to assist with races in the first place. She also spoke highly of the coaching she has received and continues to receive. “I have and have had the best coaches ever,” said Sidney. “Mark Eggink encouraged me to get involved in triathlon; To

develop in the sport and keep improving myself.” Her present coaches Becky Smith, Daylan Wizniuk (just recently reached 1,000 days of running in a row) and Nolan Roesch are all heavily involved in running and lead by example. “They are all adults that volunteer their time to come out and coach us,” she said with a true sense of gratitude. “I have never felt I have had this much fun doing a sport. It seems like no matter what team or where a fellow racer is from, they all cheer on each other. It is so motivating seeing these people come together and share the race and everything.” Sidney explained that in one Edmonton race that she ran, there were young children on push bikes right up to senior citizens doing the race. “There are competitors of all ages, shapes and sizes. You’ll see teenagers, adults, seniors some people in their 60’s doing the race, it is so good to see,” smiled Sidney. She admits that running is in her blood and proudly spoke about the positive influence both her mother and father have had on her and her brother to stay involved and keep active. “My dad ran a marathon and I would tag along while he was training.” Sidney said that running has not only helped her stay in top physical

shape, but also assists her in staying focused mentally and is a great way to relieve the stress of exams. “It makes you feel more relaxed, calms you by releasing all the good endorphins.” Outside of her dedicated running schedule, competing in races and playing basketball, Sidney is a top student going into Grade 11 and has a little baking business on the side where she gets to express her artistic side in some intricately decorated and delicious cupcakes and other baked goods. She epitomizes what having goals and staying focused can achieve in life and with a wonderful positive attitude, is a great reflection of what her future has in store.

UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING Why the City of Camrose is implementing the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program: 1. 2. 3. 4.

To maintain and improve the City’s water quality. To improve water flow and pressure in the water distribution system. To reduce bacterial growth, restore disinfectant residual, and improve water colour. Unidirectional Flushing uses 40% less water than traditional flushing programs due to increased water velocity. 5. In addition to scouring the water pipes, the UDF Program also gives the City the opportunity to check, exercise, and maintain all water valves and hydrants. This year’s UDF program began July 25, 2019, starting with Zone A (in Area 2) and will continue for 2-3 months. Water service should not be disrupted during the flushing process. There may be a slight drop in pressure or a presence of discolouration in the water from the minerals and sediments being flushed from the pipes. If a discolouration is noticed, please turn the tap off for 15 minutes and flush from your bathtub tap until the water is clear. If there are any questions or concerns in regards to the Unidirectional Flushing Program please feel free to contact Emily Baum at the City of Camrose Engineering Department at 780-672-4428. The Camrose Connector bus service that runs between Camrose and Edmonton is experiencing a steady increase of passengers utilizing the service. To better serve the needs of the community with regards to the Connector, the City of Camrose conducted a survey during Jaywalkers’ Jamboree. “We have had a really good response about the service,” said City of Camrose transit program administrator Nicole Bouillon. “It is used by a lot of seniors (going to Edmonton for various health care appointments) and Augustana students commuting to and from Edmonton for school.” Bouillon said that responses to the survey and feedback received since the launch of the service, has indicated an interest in options suggested by the City for changes to scheduling and routes. “The most popular option choices included a stop in Hay Lakes and a Sunday route.” In order to accommodate both of these options within the budget, Bouillon said the existing stop at St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose and the Tuesday route, which are the least used, will be eliminated. The stop in Hay Lakes will be located at the Hay Lakes Town office, where a ticketing service will be available. “If the weather is poor, then riders can step inside and wait comfortably for the Connector.” Bouillon added that while they did receive a lot of requests for a stop at the airport, the City felt adding one would take away from the lifeline focus of getting local and rural residents to and from health care appointments. “The City is providing Edmonton Transit System information and a step-bystep guide on how to get to the airport from one of the Connector’s Edmonton stops. The local band Sawbones will be holding a CD release party at the Alice Hotel on Aug. 17. If you have heard of the name before, it is because Terry “Sawbones” Grant, formerly of Punch Drunk Cabaret, has teamed with Camrose band members from Big Smoke Revival to form the new band. “All of a sudden, out of the blue, I get a call from Terry asking me to play drums on his new project,” explained Jeff Nyback, drummer for Big Smoke Revival. “I asked who else was in the band and he said he was still looking. I told him I had a ready-made built-in band to use for the CD project. He agreed if they were willing to take on a side project, then it would work out. Terry is a brilliant musician, so we agreed. He is a great songwriter,” shared Jeff. “So we started down this road back in the fall 2017. We practiced a few times and then played a concert in 2018 and had a great time and such a good response, Terry asked us to go farther.” Sawbones is a mixture of country, blues and rockabilly music. It is a four-piece band based out of Camrose and is built to keep the dance floor busy. The boys have individually or collectively shared stages with Foreigner, Kim Mitchell, Trooper, Paul Rodgers, Harlequin, The Sheepdogs and Ashley MacIsaac. “We played all last summer and then we decided to record music in February. We recorded in Beaumont, eight tracks in six hours. People loved us in Edmonton at the blues festival and we opened for Bif Naked. We were treated like royalty, which was new to us because Jordan Leden, Darwin Redekopp and I were used to playing in bars,” said Jeff. “Since we played cover tunes, it was hard to get out of the bar scene. Now with Terry doing the writing, we have the opportunity to play our own music, as well as play our favourites,” shared Jeff. “This allows us to play festivals and share our original music. We played the Beaumont Blues Festival, which was a great

success. We played at a Battle of the Bands event in Edmonton and, by placing third, it allowed us entry into the Alberta Music Association, which opens up more opportunities such as K-Days.” The band had a CD party in Edmonton and now, since they are from Camrose, they wanted to have one here. CKUA radio station has played some of their songs already. “We will have no cover charge and we want people to drop in and hear our music. The Camrose band 103 Cubic Inches will open for us at 9 p.m. We will go on at about 10:30 or 11 p.m.” Jeff said it is a sharp learning curve going from playing cover tunes to building your own songs from ideas. “At first, we thought it would be easy. But, Terry

dissects them, changes chords and adds to it to really craft a song,” said Jeff. “He is also a showman on stage, so his songs allow us to express ourselves on stage as well in a different manner.” The CD is called Rejects because most of the songs didn’t get used in Punch Drunk Cabaret. “Terry has poured his heart and soul into these songs to improve them and they are really good. We call ourselves dirty roots rock. We are a little bit influenced by blues, roots and rock,” explained Jeff. “It is cool to turn on the radio and hear one of your songs being played. We have had to balance the two bands, since last May. It is a full time commitment between events and practise for both, but it has been good.”

Minister Dreeshen seeks more input By Jackie Lovely MLA Camrose Constituency

On July 25, Minister Devon Dreeshen was in Camrose to consult with the local farm and ranch community. Alberta Agriculture and Forestry is leading a range of stakeholder consultation opportunities throughout the summer. Camrose was the first stop for the minister’s tour enabling those who work in the industry to “Have your say on farm and ranch safety and workplace legislation.” Our government has initiated comprehensive consultations with farmers, ranchers, agriculture workers, and others as we move forward with the new proposed Farm Freedom and Safety Act. The new legislation will address: ensuring basic safety standards; recognizing that a farm is unlike other businesses and that farmers and ranchers require flexibility in meeting workplace standards; minimizing red tape and the regulatory burden on farmers and ranchers; requiring employers to have workplace insurance, but allowing a choice of market insurance or the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) as long as basic standards of coverage are met and exempting small farms from employment standards legislation. We are committed to restoring balance, fairness and common sense to the regulation of Alberta’s agriculture sector. Farm and ranch operations have unique needs that are unlike other industries. We need legislation that balances the unique economic pressures of farming with the need for common sense, flexible farm safety and employment legislation. For those who were not able to attend the event, a survey on Farm Freedom and Safety is available online at Alberta.ca until the end of the summer and I encourage you to provide your input. The survey is online at alberta. ca/farm-safety-engagement. I appreciate your support as we move forward with another government promise that is meaningful and essential to so many of our friends and neighbours. If you have any questions or would like to provide input into this important legislation, feel free to contact us at the Camrose Constituency Office at Suite 104, 487051 Street, Camrose or by email at camrose@assembly. ab.ca.

Healthy celebrations for young children By Murray Green

Birthday parties don’t have to be all about candy and cake. Try to make celebrations with children fun and healthy. Here are a few tips on how you can make healthy foods the easy choice at holiday celebrations, birthday parties and special events. Decorate using themes or colours. Make crafts or play party games. Have a theme-based scavenger hunt. Sing special songs or read books about your theme. On birthdays, have the birthday child be your special helper for the day. Serve fun and healthy foods such as a

vegetable or fruit tray with yogurt dip. Arrange the fruit and vegetables in fun shapes or colourthemed trays. Plan a “build your own” party. Let each child build their own sandwich, pizza, taco, salad or yogurt parfait from a variety of healthy ingredients. Help children make a Friendship Fruit Salad. Each child can choose a different fruit to add to the salad. Stir it gently and serve. Add chunks of melon, slices of citrus fruit or cucumber to a pitcher of water. Call it a special name and offer it to party guests to drink. For more ideas, go to healthyeatingstartshere. ca.

Demolition of Drill Hall approved in split vote By Lori Larsen

During the regular council meeting held on Aug. 6, City council approved the motion of administration’s recommendation to demolish the Drill Hall portion of the Community Centre and the indoor gun range in 2020 and provide formal notice to affected tenants of the City’s intent to terminate existing lease agreements within the Drill Hall. After hearing three options proposed by administration including cost estimates related to the Drill Hall, council decided in a three for, and two opposed vote to proceed with Option C, the demolition of the Drill Hall. Option A included a complete rehabilitation of the Drill Hall which would have provided continual space for a number of local government agencies and local user groups with least possible interruption to their operations at an estimated cost of $2.2 to $3.2 million, including a 30 per cent contingency. Option B included temporary repairs to the Drill Hall to the extent that the structure would have been deemed safe for approximately one to three years allowing the City more time to plan for alternatives. With input from Wood Research and Development (WRD) the company responsible for assessing the condition of the Drill Hall, administration estimated the cost of Option B to be approximately $750,000 to 1 million, including a 30 per cent contingency. Option C includes the demolition of the Drill Hall requiring the termination of all leases with existing Drill Hall tenants, with tenants being completely moved out of the building by November or December of this year (depending

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The Drill Hall of the Community Centre is approved for demolition

on terms of their respective leases.) The building would remain closed over the winter months, excepting limited access by City staff for maintenance and continual monitoring of the structure. Because the majority of utilities that feed the Field House run through the Drill Hall, administration will be working over the winter months to develop a plan to provide new service for the Field House by the spring of 2020. Once that is successfully established, demolition on the Drill Hall will commence. This will minimize the impact on the remaining tenants and users of the Field House. The estimated cost of Option C is approximately $900,000 to $1.5 million, including a 20 per cent contingency. “Prior to this decision, at the request of City council, administration discussed the condition of the building and possible outcome with existing Drill Hall tenants,” noted City of Camrose director of engineering, Jeremy Enarson. “Administration has also attempted to find alternative locations for each tenant to the extent possible, maximizing the use of City-owned facilities first, and then investigating options within the private sector.” In a further effort to

provide alternative options to existing tenants of the Drill Hall being displaced should demolition be approved, administration contacted MLA Jackie Lovely on July 19 to discuss options related to the former Stoney Creek Lodge, which is still owned by the province under the administration of Alberta Housing Corporation. In a separate motion, council also endorsed the City manager’s memo to MLA Lovely, recommending the Minister of Alberta Seniors Housing consider returning ownership of Stoney Creek Lodge to the City of Camrose. Council divided

Mayor Norm Mayer indicated he had mixed emotions regarding the recommendation and options presented by administration. “My preference would be to structurally secure the building for probably a three year period, to give us the opportunity to plan and develop and construct a replacement structure to accommodate the people we are presently accommodating (via lease) in the Drill Hall.” Councillor David Ofrim inquired as to what the interruption to existing tenants would be with Option B (temporary repair). Enarson indicated that, in the City’s opinion,

both Option A and B could be done with the tenants remaining in the building, however, having to contend with some dust, noise and contractors coming in and out of the building. Councillor PJ Stasko commented that by choosing Option B, temporary repairs and incurring the cost of those repairs, that would leave them in the same position three years from now (the speculated time frame that temporary repairs would last.) He made reference to the fact that with demolishing the Drill Hall, council and the City could proceed in planning a suitable facility that could accommodate a lot of things. “There are too many variables in the temporary and in the end you are left with a temporary repair to a facility that is very old. My vote is for option C.” Councillor Max Lindstrand remarked that part of the problem is the suddenness of the decision and the time required for proper transitioning and going forward. “I am supporting what our mayor is suggesting, some sort of a reinforcement to make this work for a period of three years. That three years would give us time to transition into something new. Right now it is very hasty and we have seven major tenants, of which we have

some suggestions for at least four of them, but the two major tenants there, we have no suggestions for them going forward. The Outreach School opens up in a month and there is no plan as to what to do come Nov. 1.” Councillor Kevin Hycha agreed it felt like a hasty decision noting that there were two major issues at hand, an unsafe building and the situation occurring with the existing tenants. “The timeline is so short it makes for a hasty decision but with what we just went through with the pool, if we have not learned anything from that – then shame on us. I will vote for Option C and do our best to see what we can do to assist the tenants.” Camrose and District Support Services executive director Margaret Holliston, one of several people attending the regular council meeting to hear on the decision, voiced her concern over the decision to demolish the Drill Hall. “One may think you are throwing good money after bad, but there are a lot of good people in that building and I think that money is a minor investment to provide us with three years. “There is a lot of good people that will be negatively affected by this decision. I hope this council moves forward looking at helping us with the transition. It is a very short period of time at a really bad time of year and I hope you will remember we are a good group of people providing really good and important services when you make those decisions.” Mayor Mayer stated that council advise administration to continue researching possible alternatives for the existing tenants of the Drill Hall.

Henry to assist others to live their dream By Murray Green

Camrose football player Tylor Henry realized his dream to play professional when he suited up for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers against the BC Lions in the Canadian Football League (CFL) last year. Tylor was drafted by the Blue Bombers after playing with the University of Alberta Golden Bears and learned the game playing in Camrose. “They (Winnipeg) resigned me after I had initially been cut after I was drafted. After I got drafted in 2017, I was injured. So then they sent me back home, went to school again, and then they re-signed me, for the 2018 season,” recalled Tylor. “And so I went back there again in May 2018 and I made the team and I ended up sticking there to play the year. Most of it was on practice roster, but I did get to see some game time, which was really cool. I was the kick returner against BC (July 15, 2018). I actually took some kickoffs and played on a few other special teams too, which was pretty cool.” Playing professional football is a little different than college ball. “I think for me, one thing that was very eye opening, was how difficult it really is to be a professional athlete. Not because you have to work hard, but because of the nature of professional sports and it’s just a very different reality, because you go through university and all these other levels that build you up with a support network around you that allows you to grow and develop. But when you become a professional, your job is as insecure as the paper that your contract is written on,” explained Tylor. “It can really change day to day. If you have a bad day, someone might think it’s time for you to go. You might not see another game day. I think what we love as athletes, is the thrill of aspiring to get towards something that only a few can ever say they can do. And we love that. We love the hunt. We love to go for that and feel privileged when we get to do that. But I think for me, it was like evaluating how that process went. It was almost eye-opening in the sense of like, wow, can I really expect to do this for a long time? And what happens when I become a number?” Getting a fair chance to do your job is something completely out of your control. The higher you are drafted, the more benefits you have. If two players have equal talent, the player drafted higher receives the edge when it comes to picking which player makes the team. “There’s all those kinds of things that play into it. That was part of my experience as well as, you know,

Winnipeg drafted two receivers early in the draft when I came in, one of which was released this very next year. And it’s just one of those things where, even though they didn’t keep him for more than a year, he automatically got precedent over me just because he’s an early draft pick. I did a great job in camp. My coach let me know about two days before camp was over that I hadn’t had a single drop the entire camp, every ball that was thrown, it was caught,” said Tylor, who was proud of the accomplishment.

make the dream happen and they’re gone in a day.” Being on the practice roster was really a grind and it was really something that he had to do. “You had to show up to work every single day and be your best and you’re as good. You’re watching the games and you’re supporting the boys and you’re proud to be part of the team. But if somebody gets hurt or screws up, I’m not going say no to a chance to play and you have be ready. It was a learning lesson and I had no problem being a backseat player and

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Tylor Henry was originally selected in the eighth round, 68th overall, by Winnipeg in the 2017 CFL Draft. He ran three kick returns for 76 yards in total. Tylor led the University of Alberta in receiving in 2016 with 43 receptions for 611 yards. He set a Canada West record with 19 receptions in a game against Manitoba.

“I was efficient as I could have been and I handled my business. I thought, ‘you did your part’. I left it to their decision. I think that was a big part of me making that team. It was like, okay, I made it. However, being a practice roster player, being a professional athlete is an insecure job. Being a practice roster player is 10 times that, because there’s nothing in the CFL player association that protects a practice roster.” You could be there one day and gone the next. “I saw people who came from all around the world, who would be gone in a day or two, who came from all sorts of places to come and try and

learning how to be a professional. I think I actually grew a lot from being in that role. “After being a captain, for five years, you get used to a certain way of being a player. You’re used to being a leader. You’re used to being an initiator. But then when you go there, all of a sudden now you’re kind of being the one invested in. People are teaching you how to be professional, teaching you how to perform at this level and how to be successful. I thought it was a really fresh breath of air. Honestly, just being in that new environment and learning. I really enjoyed that. But where things got shifted for me was getting released the latter

half of the season. I’ve been on the team for well over three months. And, then I was just released because I got injured. We had a lot of injuries in Winnipeg and, when Weston Dressler went down for a while, a few of us stepped up to take his role and I found myself taking first, second and third string reps that week. I thought after being so productive that week, having the best week that I’ve had in Winnipeg and just because I got to take more of a star player reps instead of lesser players, reps like I normally would’ve played. I ended up showing very well. I thought when I pulled that hamstring, well, this doesn’t look good, but I just showed really well.” Sitting around waiting for a change and not getting paid wears down a player more so than a steady stream of tacklers. “I loved being a pro athlete, but I know it is tough. It is not exactly what I dreamt until you get a secure position. It’s a tough go. Then we traded Adarius Bowman who is probably going to be a CFL hall of famer. He wasn’t looking very good and he had just moved his family. Not even a month, all of a sudden the family has to figure that out, another move (he went from Edmonton to Winnipeg to Montreal). It’s just one of those things where it was really eye-opening and you grow up thinking that pro sports are going to be something. And I don’t think a lot of people educate you on what it’s really going to be. It’s like, you know why it is a beautiful thing because the fact that you get to do it is special, very cool. The most important thing is that I got to see through a childhood dream. I think every kid deserves to have a dream. Every kid deserves to have something that they aspire to do and that matters to them and that they can actually work towards it over time and say, ‘I did that’. I made that happen and I was successful with my effort. I reflect on my journey and I realize, yeah, I had a dream early on and I’ve worked my butt off, but I also had a lot of people along the way that just poured into me and invested in me and made sure I saw this through.” Tylor is proud of the people who supported him and pushed him to work hard and continued to grow. “I played 12 years (counting minor football). You know, training five hours a day from 14 years old and being completely passionate about it. Nobody can take that away from me. It also just gives me this amazing sense of optimism for how powerful a community can be to help somebody achieve what they want to achieve. There’s so many people that have helped me to see my dream.

The beautiful thing about seeing a dream through is that when you do it successfully, it gives you the ability to take the next thing forward with confidence. And that’s where I’m at today.” “University is different because if you’re a student, unless you’re skipping classes, you’re there and you’re going to stay there. I had Chris Morris, the head coach, who is like a father figure to me. He made sure that I got to study hall and got to learn how to be a great student. I had a coach who taught me how to be a good football player. He taught me how to be a leader. At the end of the day, whether I played good or not, those are valuable tools.” Tylor is ready to move on and help others realize their dream. “I probably spent over 10,000 hours just in the gym trying to be a better football player. And what I learned was that in all that time training, wow, I love to train, not only love to train, but I love to show people how to train. So why don’t I take that and use that as a career? “It doesn’t require me to be this icon of a sport athlete. It just requires me to keep growing. I have my second opportunity to get a better education just because of what I did in football. I interned in Texas as a strength conditioning coach with the University of Texas Christian. I interned with them and I really got in because I was a pro athlete. They don’t usually bring Canadians in to do that sort of stuff. So they brought me in and I find out that I love strength conditioning as much as I hoped I would have liked it. That opportunity teaches me a bunch and ends up catapulting me into a new opportunity now, at the University of West Florida. So that’s a graduate assistant position where you take a master’s degree, but you’re a full-time employee. I’ll be taking a master’s in physical education and human performance. I’m really excited about that. I’ll be an assistant strength coach with the football team and the head strength conditioning coach for baseball, swimming and diving teams.” The opportunity as the strength coach allows him to still be a part of football, but also to expand his training to Olympic athletes. “I’m not just passionate about football, I’m passionate about developing people, and so naturally my talents and my skills draw me to be really effective at football training, because I really understand that sport. But at the same time, I have a valuable contribution to help any athlete.”

Gust enjoys pony rides with his 1968 Mustang By Murray Green

When Bryan Gust of Bashaw was younger he dreamed of getting pony rides. Now that he is older, he still enjoys going for rides in his 1968 Ford Mustang. “I bought this car used when I was 19 years old. I looked in the classified ads of the Edmonton Journal and found it. It was a basket case,” said Bryan. “I fixed it up because I always wanted a 1968 Mustang.” The Mustang has a 390 engine with a four barrel in it. “The car goes really fast until you need to go to the gas station and then it stops, because it gets about eight miles to the gallon. It really doesn’t matter how you drive it. It doesn’t get any better than that,” laughed Bryan. “It can pass everything, but the gas station.” “I want to take this car to Kelowna, but my wife won’t go with me. We saw this exact same car on top of a mountain path with the hood up,” started Bryan. “We see this lady with the hood up with a book, waiting for help. You can’t just leave a car like that at the side of the road. It was the identical car. Our licence plate is Pony 68 and this one said 68 Pony. That was just so serendipitous for me, warning me not to do this,” said his wife Teresa (Terry) Brown Gust, to finish the story of why she won’t go to the same spot with the car. “I’ve repainted the car (Teresa said the painter removed the old paint with a putty knife because it was

repainted so often). The original colour was gold and I don’t like that colour on vehicles. The motor was redone, transmission rebuilt, upholstery re-done and truly it had been gone through from one end to the other,” shared Bryan. How much work needed to be done wasn’t taken into too much consideration. He wanted a 1968 that bad.

FUN FACTS

Exterior trim changes included concave taillights, side scoop (1967 model) and chrome (1968 model) side ornamentation, square rear-view mirrors, and usual yearly wheel and gas cap changes. The 1968 models that were produced from January 1968 were also the first model year to incorporate three-point lap and shoulder belts (which had previously been optional, in 1967–68 models) as opposed to the standard lap belts. The air-conditioning option was fully integrated into the dash, the speakers and stereo were upgraded, and unique centre and overhead consoles were options. The fastback model offered the option of a rear fold-down seat, and the convertible was available with folding glass windows. The convenience group with four warning lights for low fuel, seat belt reminder, parking brake not released and door ajar were added to the instrument panel. Changes for the 1968 model increased safety with a two-spoke energy-absorbing steering wheel, along with newly introduced shoulder belts.

“In my opinion, the 1968 and 1969 Mustangs were the best Mustangs ever built and I wanted one of those. I just find they look more like a muscle car. The early ones look more like a sedan and the later ones got to be so huge they didn’t look as nice. They weren’t little sports cars anymore. Mustangs are a car that you either had one, you knew someone who had one or you wished that you had one. Or, you were a GMC guy and didn’t want one.” Since Bryan’s dad was a Ford supporter, he followed in his footsteps. “He didn’t want anything to do with the Internet until I showed him americanmusclecar. com. It had a Mustang on the front page and then I couldn’t get him off the Internet,” revealed Teresa. “When I couldn’t find him, he was on the Internet. He would be listening how to upgrade the car. He bought a lot of stuff from them. The next thing he will need is new shocks because of all of the stuff hanging on it. The

wheels are starting to bow,” she laughed. Bryan also has a newer 2007 Mustang. The firstgeneration Ford Mustang was manufactured by Ford from March 1964 until 1973. The introduction of

the Mustang created a new class of automobile known as the pony car. The Mustang’s styling, with its long hood and short deck, proved wildly popular and inspired a host of competition.

Rural Canada’s needs are a priority

In the lead up to the Oct. 21 federal election, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) is calling on all political parties to commit to building a “rural lens” into the heart of federal government spending. Specifically, FCM is asking the government to: 1. Work in partnership with local leaders to promote rural economic development; 2. Recognize rural realities in planning national initiatives, from affordable housing to disaster mitigation and climate adaptation; 3. Modernize and streamline funding tools that rural communities rely on to build better lives, including doubling the reliable and predictable federal Gas Tax Fund transfer; and 4. Ensure new broadband investments translate into reliable Internet connections that support economic growth and a modern quality of life. In response to FCM’s request, the Conservative Party of Canada vowed to continue to support policies that will help rural Canadians get ahead. Conservative leader Andrew Scheer has promised to champion a west-toeast coast pipeline, scrap the Liberal’s carbon tax, reappoint Regional Economic Development ministers, which we had prior to 2015 in the Conservative Government and ensure rural Canadians have high speed Internet. Unfortunately, currently being connected in rural Canada does not necessarily mean quick or easy access. As reported by the auditor general in one of his fall 2018 reports, only 39 per cent of Canadians living in rural and remote areas had access to the same Internet speeds as urban Canadians. This situation still exists despite there being various public and private sector studies, recommendations and funding over many years to resolve this discrepancy. In a House of Commons standing committee report titled, Broadband Connectivity in Rural Canada: Overcoming the Digital Divide, they concluded preventing Canadians in rural and remote areas from participating in the digital economy, creates a digital divide that increases the challenge those areas already face. (Page 3, Fall 2018, reports of the auditor general of Canada to the Parliament of Canada, Connectivity in Rural and Remote Areas). The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has concluded that any Canadian without broadband access is profoundly disadvantaged. After reviewing the issue with the office of the auditor general and officials from the department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), the Public Accounts committee, which I chair, asked for a report by July 31. The report is to outline the progress they have made on the development and implementation of a national connectivity strategy. This strategy is to include clear timelines for achieving defined minimum standards and level of service. At the time of writing this column on Aug. 8, I have not yet seen that requested progress report from ISED. I hope this slow response is not indicative of the Liberal government’s attitude toward rural Canadians and their failure to make high speed Internet a priority. Their record on connectivity is as dismal as is their record on infrastructure spending. The Liberals have failed to work with our municipal and provincial partners to get shovels in the ground and deliver projects on-time and on-budget. A Conservative Government, if elected on Oct. 21, will work with municipalities to get much-needed infrastructure started and completed and will ensure rural Canadians get the high speed Internet services that will keep them connected and at the same level as urban Canadians. December 26, 1940 ~ August 3, 2019 Reginald “Reg” Oliver Thompson of Kingman, Alberta, passed away on Saturday, August 3, 2019 at the age of 78 years. On December 26, 1940, Oliver and Ann (nee Hughes) Thompson welcomed Reginald Oliver into their family. Growing up, he enjoyed playing hockey and baseball, going on to coach and referee hockey. In the spring of 1966, Reg met Carol Skalin at a baseball game and they hit it off so well, they married on November 12. They moved to the family farm as the fourth generation and he farmed with his dad until Oliver’s sudden passing in July 1973. Reg was passionate about the farm and his family. They were blessed with three daughters, Connie, Tracy and Terri. He also had a deep sense of responsibility to his community. He was an avid volunteer with the Kingman REA, Beaverhill Gas Co-op, Kingman Recreation Association and Salem Lutheran Church. Reg was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2002 and it was then he said he realized what was truly important in life – his family. His most cherished gifts were time spent with his daughters and their families. Connie married Allan Banack in 1986 and they had four children, Eric, Ryan, Brendan and Breanna. Connie and Allan divorced, and Connie has been with Brian Sikorski for the last nine years. Tracy married Tim de Hoop in 1998 and they had three daughters, Olivia, Grace and Clare. Terri married Chuck (Charles) McKinney in 1997, and they had one daughter Taylor. Reg was so very proud when Terri and Chuck took over the farm in 2014, with Taylor planning to succeed her parents in the future. Reg and Carol travelled extensively and, given his love of road trips, most of their vacations were exploring with their truck, or truck and trailer. Terri and her husband Chuck owned an acreage in Arizona, and Reg and Carol loved to visit them. Reg knew San Diego very well as it was one of his favourite destinations. His last road trip was this spring with Carol and Connie, as they spent six weeks driving down to California and exploring the San Diego area. Tracy joined them on the return trip in Las Vegas and they truly never stopped laughing and ribbing each during the entire drive. You always knew he was in a good mood when he would whistle, and he whistled a lot while driving. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Carol; children Connie Thompson (Brian Sikorski) of Edmonton, Tracy (Tim) deHoop of Sherwood Park, and Terri (Chuck) McKinney of Kingman; and eight grandchildren. Reginald was predeceased by his parents Oliver and Ann Thompson. A Funeral Service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 10, 2019, from Salem Lutheran Church with Rev. Garfield Vikse officiating. The inurnment has taken place in the Kingman Cemetery. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Reg’s memory may be made to the Salem Lutheran Church. Ernest Evenson Ernest Evenson, Son, Dad, Brother, Grandpa, Uncle and Friend, passed away on August 7, 2019 in St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose. Ernie was born to Arlie and Augustine at Viking, AB on January 24, 1954. He is the oldest brother to Harvey (Cathie) Evenson, Arlene (Art) Molnar, Shirley (Ron) Brothen and Harold Evenson. Ernie was raised on the family farm and moved into town as a young adult. In his younger years, he married his first wife Rita, and together they raised two children Rose-Anne (Nathan) Spence and Robert (Nathalie) Evenson. He was always excited to spend time with his grandchildren Hazen (Allisia), Shelene, Chance, Trista, Jessi, Kodiak and Nick; and they were all eagerly and warmly welcomed. Ernie worked at Wetaskiwin Motors for 20-plus years, and it was here that he made many lifelong friends, whom the family thanks for coming to visit when he became ill. If you had an engine, chances were that Ernie wanted to take a look at it or could have fixed it. If you didn’t have this, camping, fishing or just visiting were other favorite pastimes. Ernie met his second wife Gail and her children Michelle, Dominique and Lee, added more grandchildren to the family. Together, Gail and Ernie raised and spoiled their poodle Rascal. They took many trips together and enjoyed a mutual love of traveling. Ernie leaves behind Rascal; his mother Augustine; siblings Harvey (Cathie), Harold, Arlene (Art) Molnar, Shirley (Ron) Brothen; children Rose-Anne (Nathan) Spence and Robert (Nathalie); as well as eight grandchildren; and his first wife Rita. He now rejoins other friends and family, including his father Arlie; second wife Gail; nephew Shane; and great-niece Samantha. Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 15, 2019 at Weber’s Mount Pleasant Chapel, Camrose, AB with Father Joby Augustine as celebrant. Cremation has taken place and inurnment will take place on a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made directly to the charity of one’s choice.

John’s dedication to so many groups and organizations was evidenced by the coming together of the community to honour his memory and celebrate his life. Special thanks to the Donalda Ag Society for the Hall setup, Beth for the beautiful flowers, Teresa for the bountiful meal, especially John’s favorite cinnamon buns, Linda for the wonderful music, Rev. Barb Lieurance for the meaningful message and Verna and the Stettler Funeral Home for your personal and caring services. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Decoration Day honours all those who served By Murray Green

Decoration Day is a Canadian event that recognizes veterans of Canada’s military. It was actually the first Remembrance Day. In Camrose, graves are marked of those who served in the military on Aug. 18. “We will be having a short service and wreath laying at the main cenotaph, by the Camrose and District Centennial Museum at 1 p.m. Then we will be going to the cemetery for a couple of short prayers. Afterwards we head back to the Legion for refreshments,” said Adrian Zinck, of the Camrose branch. Camrose Valleyview Cemetery, located at 420552 Street, is owned and operated by the City of Camrose. The Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will be marking graves and holding a brief ceremony. Decoration Day is held annually on the third Sunday of August. This is a special day to pay tribute to those in the local cemetery. The community services department staff will be available on this day to answer questions, or give assistance finding grave locations. “If anyone knows of a veteran that has recently passed, or knows if we have missed someone, call the Legion at 780-672-3325 so the name can be added to the list,” added Adrian. Vehicle traffic is restricted to roadways only. The speed limit is 20km/h. Flowers and similar decorations must be placed in an approved container. Grave decorations must not include lawn ornaments or any glass or china items. Flowers and potted plants shall not be placed on the turf area of graves between May 1 and October 1, except for a period following Decoration Day or an interment. No pets or animals are permitted in the cemetery. Decoration Day began on June 2, 1890. Originally, the celebration served as a form of protest for veterans of the Battle of Ridgeway, who felt that their contributions to the protection of Canada during the Fenian Raids were being overlooked by the government. The veterans placed decorations at the Canadian Volunteers Monument, near Queen’s Park in Toronto, on the anniversary of the battle. There were 30,000 participants in

Bouck third in junior golf By Murray Green

The Camrose Junior Open on the McLennan Ross Golf Tour started out a little damp, but it finished strong with some sunshine. The ninth spot on the tour was held at the Camrose Golf Course on Aug. 6. While Mikayla Wood of Red Tail Landing and Chase Bodoano of the Broadmoor came away as the winners, some local golfers turned in some decent scores on the very wet course. Erik Bouck of Camrose shot a 76 to finish in third on his home course. Mason Kucy of Camrose was sixth with a 78. Nicole Rohr of Camrose came in second on the girl’s side, but well back of Wood. Five golfers turned in scorecards that advanced them to the finals at Wolf Creek near Ponoka. Jeff Borgfjord of Camrose qualified in the boys, born from 2000 to 2002, with a top 10 placement. Landon Scharf of Camrose grabbed another one of the five spots with his finish in the boys, born 2005 and later division. He was second in his age category. Rory Wutzke of Camrose was also second in the boys 2003 and 2004 born age division, by shooting an 82.
