The Camrose Connector bus service that runs between Camrose and Edmonton will be implementing a few changes to schedule and routes beginning Sunday, Aug. 25. As a result of a survey conducted by the City of Camrose encouraging feedback on the Connector service, a Sunday route will be added, eliminating the Tuesday route, and a stop in Hay Lakes will also be added, eliminating the stop at St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose. “The most popular option choices included a stop in Hay Lakes and a Sunday route,” said City of Camrose transit program administrator Nicole Bouillon. According to Bouillon, both the Tuesday route and St. Mary’s stop were the least used of the service and had to be removed in order for the service to remain within the allotted budget. “The addition of the stop in Hay Lakes adds to the regional aspect of the service,” remarked Bouillon. “ The stop in Hay Lakes will be located at the Hay Lakes village office, where

a ticketing service will be available. “If the weather is poor, then riders can step inside and wait comfortably for the Connector.” Bouillon added that the City did receive a lot of requests for a stop at the airport, however adding a stop there would add time to the route which would be somewhat disruptive to riders using the Connector for attending doctor appointments and other health care appointments, which is the primary intention of the Connector. The City is providing Edmonton Transit System information and a step-by-step guide on how to get to the airport when travelling from Camrose to Edmonton using the Connector to transfer from bus to bus. For more information on the Connector, visit the City of Camrose website at www.camrose.ca/en/living-here/transport ation.aspx#Public-Transit or Red Arrow or by telephone at 1-800-232-1958.

A Burry Berry Picking By Lisa Kaastra I’d had my eye on the bushes surrounding our house for the past several weeks. The sun had been shining, the temperatures had been rising and Saskatoon berry season was almost here. Earlier in the summer, the cows had purposefully been fenced off the area to avoid munching on the blossoms and now the warm days were finally starting to ripen the dark berries. By now I was dreaming of a plentiful harvest, hauling in a full bucket of ripe, juicy berries to fill the freezer and stain my fingers purple. Days of my childhood summers back east came to mind with memories of hot afternoons, sticky fingers and deliciously sweet fruit. So one evening, with the girls finally in bed, I donned my long pants and long sleeves, threw on a cap, and marched out with high hopes and even higher expectations.

A short 20 minutes later, I returned a very different woman. I shuffled back onto the porch, my arms extended and legs wide. Berry juice smeared across my cheek, my cap sat lopsided and reeked of bug spray, and everything below my chest was absolutely covered in swatted mosquito remains and tiny, prickly burrs. So very many burrs. Days of my childhood summers back east now came to mind with memories of sweaty long sleeves, painful thistles and immeasurable swarms of blood-sucking insects. But the burrs…I hadn’t remembered about the burrs. I slowly began to pick off a few of the “stickers” on my pants, silently counting them off as I relayed the success of my berry hunt to my husband. “First of all,” I started, “the berries are pretty much all dried up.” One, two three... “And there are thistles everywhere…” Seven, eight... “And I was eaten alive by every female mosquito in the slough…” Fifteen, sixteen... “And I was attacked by all of these ridiculous sticker-burrs…” Twenty, twenty-one… “And…as I climbed over the fence with my container of small, half dried berries, it dumped into a pile of ant infested knee high grass.” I finished my story with a dramatic flourish, finally giving up on the pants and tossing them into the corner of the room, stickers and all. “Next year,” I added, “No more wild Saskatoons – we’ll plant our own, surrounded by nice, cut grass.” My husband, ever the easy-going, simply nodded in agreement, with a smile. Days of an upcoming summer at the slough suddenly came to mind with dreams of cool sunny days, bug-free skies, and a full bucket of ripe, juicy berries to fill the freezer and stain my fingers purple… But no more burrs.

What would happen if you fell and nobody was around to help you? You can help reduce falls in rural areas with the Balance and Mobility program available for Flagstaff County seniors. A free eight-week program starts this month to help seniors prevent falls, primarily in the home. Led by a kinesiologist, the Balance and Mobility program to be held in Daysland, Forestburg, Hardisty and Sedgewick, includes exercise sessions and a range of videoconference discussions that explore how nutrition, sleep, medication, vision, hearing, footwear and posture can impact the risk of having a fall. All participants must undergo an initial intake assessment that will include a medical history screen, balance testing, and assessment of the ability to multitask. Caregivers may join participants for assessments and program classes. Balance and Mobility program assessments will be offered at Providence Place in Daysland Aug. 26 and Sept. 16; at the Sedgewick Seniors Centre on Aug. 27; at Big Knife Villa in Forestburg Aug. 28, and at the Hardisty Health Centre Aug. 29 and Sept. 19. For more information, including times and to register, call the Daysland CRP office at 780-374-3815. Following the assessment, the eight sessions, including three exercise classes and five discussions, will run September through November. Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patientfocused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.

Family Day

By Lori Larsen

On Aug. 18, spend a fun-filled day with family and friends at Meeting Creek Railway Station and Linear Park at the Canadian Northern Railway Family Day event. Beginning at 10 a.m., the day has something for everyone and offers great opportunities to learn the history behind the abandoned Canadian Northern line and the 1913 Station and 1917 elevators, as well as the stories about the grasslands and surrounding area. Learn about the important role the rail played in the history of Camrose and surrounding area by taking a ride on a track motor car of the Alberta Prairie mini-train. At 11 a.m., don your walking shoes and head out on a tour of the Linear Park with an enthusiastic and informative guide. The tour moves along the Alberta East Central Natural Linear Parks to Edberg (4 km round trip) and includes information on the flora, grasslands, prairie birds, insects and other wonders of our natural world. Guests are also welcome to take self-directed hikes through the park and are encouraged to make use of one of the hike kits available, containing laminated guides to wildlife and native flowers, a bug jar for examining little creatures up close, books and other items to add interest to your hike. In line with the Battle River Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards, the Year of the Grouse event hosted in the Battle River area in September of this year, learn more about the grouse and what you can do to help preserve its existence. Experience the beauty of the area on a horsedrawn wagon ride through the grasslands and hear the stories of the rails as you enjoy a ride on the track motor car (speeder) or on a mini-train perfect for the little ones. The children will also be kept busy with fun activities including sack or threelegged races, walking on stilts and grass skis and stories and songs at the gazebo by the station at 2 p.m. Food and beverages will be available for purchase at the community hall where you can tap your toes to some good old tunes. It is a wonderful way to spend a day exploring one of Camrose County’s hidden gems while learning a little more about the rich history of our area. For more information, visit the Canadian Northern Society website at http:// canadiannorthern.ca.
