Posing between the massive mice structures are (left to right) back row: mother Heather with one-and-a-half-year-old Mya; front row: Brynn, Corbin and Ben.

Courts cracking down on unlawful hunting and land use By Lori Larsen

With hunting season once again approaching residents are reminded of the consequences of hunting and land use infractions. On July 29 Killam Provincial Court heard on a case involving hunting without permission on private land. The accused plead guilty and received a $1,750 fine. In this particular case

Camrose FWEB received a complaint on Oct. 10, 2018 regarding illegal moose hunting on private land near Killam. An Officer from the Wetaskiwin FWEB attended and found three males, from Edmonton, had been declined permission to shoot a moose on private property. “The lead accused was a First Nations person, and decided to ignore the land owner and kill the moose

anyway,” noted Camrose FWEB district officer Lorne Rinkel. “The moose was then dragged through a standing grain field causing damage to the crop, and taken to an Edmonton residence where it was later seized by FWEB officers. “The complainants stood up to this blatant abuse and provided top quality information to enable a speedy and accurate investigation.”

Rinkel reminds residents that First Nations persons can hunt at any time of the year and without license, but they must obtain landowner permission, similar to any person wanting access to private land, prior to entering onto privately owned properties. Camrose FWEB has recently investigated several unlawful moose kills in this region and seeks any information regarding

any illegal wildlife related activities. If you suspect any poaching or serious land abuse telephone the tollfree Report A Poacher line at 1-800-642-3800 or visit alberta.ca/report-poacher. For information on hunting in Alberta refer to the 2019 Alberta Guide to Hunting Regulations at http://www.albertaregula tions.ca/huntingregs/.

Battle River Community Foundation executive director Dana Andreassen, looks on while Muriel Fankhanel presents a cheque to Jolene Sinclair, CAO for the Village of Alliance. Submitted

The Battle River Community Foundation recently awarded grants to the Village of Alliance for charitable projects selected by Village Council. The grants are from income from several funds created by donors to support projects that benefit residents of the Alliance area. The Betty and Gordon Rombough Memorial Fund, the Muriel Fankhanel Fund, the Peter Spady Family Fund and the Terry and Donna Howe Fund generated $4,800 for Village projects. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support charitable projects and facilities, such as those in the Village of Alliance, in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle

River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $6,370,000 to support community facilities and programs operated by organizations like the Village of Alliance. To learn more about the Village of Alliance, contact Jolene Sinclair, CAO, at 780-879-3911. To learn more about the Battle River Community Foundation contact Dana Andreassen, executive director, at 780-679-0449.
