Costume designers busy preparing for Addams Family By Murray Green
A theatre production is more than actors learning their lines. It takes a lot of people to make the shows a success. The Churchmice Players version of the The Addams Family Musical is no different. One of the hard working crew members behind the scenes at the Churchmice Players, is costume designer Peggy Noble-Cappie. “I first became involved with Churchmice during Mary Poppins as a member of the chorus, not costumes, three years ago. Since then, I helped Kathy Rickard, our former costume lady with costumes during Jesus Christ Superstar, A Christmas Carol and Mamma Mia! Our present costume team is currently busy constructing costumes for The Addams Family Musical, while we gather costumes for Chicago, opening in February 2020,” explained Peggy. “I enjoy working with people of all ages and sizes.” Peggy also fits the role perfectly by being organized, as well as handy with sewing. “I’ve always been interested in costumes. It is important in drama to get the right costume to have the character come through and it gives the actor a little more motivation when they are dressed to be who they need to be,” she said. Not everyone has to be on stage to be part of a theatre group because there are plenty of backstage opportunities. “We are looking for lots of help. We need people to make costumes, go shopping for things we need, or tweaking the costumes we have to fit the people that will wear them,” said Peggy. “If we find something at a thrift store, a lot of times we have to tweak it to fit and so it fits the play as well.”
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Churchmice Players seamstresses include, left to right, Eleanor White, Peggy Noble-Cappie, Marla Moshuk, Colleen Nelson and Carol-May Cote.
from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. The Addams Family started their rehearsals again on Sept. 3 after a summer break. The show is a musical comedy suitable for the entire family that begins on Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. Dinner theatres will be held Nov. 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9. Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. on Nov. 3 and 10. Even before Addams Family hits the stage, Churchmice are calling for Chicago auditions at Camrose United Church on Sept. 12 and 13. Dance auditions are on Sept. 15 at the Chuck MacLean Art Centre.
The original newspaper cartoon series was made into a black and white television show in 1964-66 with a total of 64 shows. A new Addams Family movie will be released on Oct. 18, just prior to the Churchmice Players hitting the stage. “Growing up watching Addams Family, the characters Morticia, Gomez, and Wednesday stood out for me. I checked on line for ideas on costumes. The director, this time Sandra McLay, may have a certain idea of the way the character should look and then take it from there. It is a combination of various people’s ideas, which makes it interesting,” added Peggy. “In some cases the roles are double cast, so we have to come with two costumes
and likely not the same size. If that character happens to have three or four costume changes, then we have to double that amount. That makes for some work, but if we have more help it isn’t too bad.” Mary Poppins featured a high number of double casts, but Addams Family will have much less. “We start the costume process as soon as we have the rights to the show. When people receive their roles, then we start making them to suit the person and character. The busiest time for us is two months before the show. We make changes right up to the show, or in some cases during the show if they need repairs.” Peggy encourages others to join in on the fun.
were off to college. However, all three have since decided to return for another year. The downside of the changes is that Deklan Whilans was sent to the Melfort Mustangs, Colson Gengenback went to the Spruce Grove Saints and Tyler Schendal headed to the Lloydminster Bobcats to make room for the veterans. The Kodiaks will play three more exhibition games prior to the start of the season. Camrose plays in Drayton Valley on Sept. 3, hosts the Thunder in a return match on Sept. 4 and go to Sherwood Park on Sept. 8. Camrose opens the regular season at home with the Olds Grizzlys on Sept. 13 and the Brooks Bandits on Sept. 14.
Murray Green, Camrose Booster The Camrose Kodiaks reached first on this play after an errant throw when they took on the Camrose Cardinals Special Olympics softball team on Aug. 27 at Kin Park.
“I’m fairly new to the community and I have found Churchmice people really fun and easy to work with. It’s been a great way to meet people and I hope more people get involved.” Stage notes
Churchmice members will be at the Community Registration Night, Sept. 5, with a table and stage a demonstration to expand its circles of volunteers in the areas of costuming, set construction and backstage assistants. If interested and you cannot attend the Registration Night, call Theo 780781-1424 or email him at churchmiceplayer@ gmail. com. Churchmice are hosting a theatre management workshop on Sept. 7 and 8
Junior Kodiaks preparing for a strong hockey season By Murray Green
The Camrose Kodiaks have had a series of changes in the coaching staff going into the 2019-20 season. Although the team was thought to be seeing several changes on the ice, a few surprises have brought back some familiarity as well. General manager Boris Rybalka has stepped back from head coaching duties and brought in former Kodiak player Clayton Jardine to led the squad. Rybalka will be assisting on the ice, as well as associate coaches Richard Petiot, Brad Huolt, Doug Fleck and Allen York. The Kodiaks were expecting to start the season without veterans Carson Welke, Mckenzie Welke and Jacob Kendall, who

The Central High Sedgewick Public School (CHSPS) will be open on Sept. 3 for high school students in the Wild Rose Coop Recreation Centre at 8:50 a.m. Elementary and junior high students will start school on Wednesday, September 11. After an Aug. 14 fire on the roof caused smoke and water damage to the Battle River School Division’s school, crews have been busy getting portable classrooms and the building in shape for another school year. Air quality issues, smoke and water damage to the elementary section of the school, the large gymnasium and the administration offices was extensive. Restoration crews estimate it will take two months before the high
school and junior high classrooms, science labs, library and common area are available to students and staff. By Sept. 11, the staff and students expect to have access to the foods lab and shop rooms including the shop classroom, and the handicapped washroom. Later in September, the small gym should also be available for use. High school students will start their core classes in the Community Centre until students can return
to the school site, possibly Sept. 11. CHSPS elementary and junior high students are to resume classes on Wednesday, Sept. 11. Mobile trailers provided by the insurance company will be used as classrooms, office and washroom spaces. Camp Sedgewick (a system of several trailers) will be used until the main school is ready to open. Sports team practices and games will be accommodated in the gym at Killam Public School as long as necessary.

FASD awareness builds By Lori Larsen
Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a diagnostic term used to describe impacts on the brain and body of individuals prenatally exposed to alcohol. On Sept. 9, people around the world will observe International FASD Awareness Day in a variety of ways to bring about community awareness and help educate the public on the potential dangers of using alcohol during pregnancy. Since Sept. 9, 1999, bells have rung at exactly 9:09 a.m. around the world on Sept. 9 to signify the first FASD Awareness Day; and communities have hosted a variety of events to help bring awareness to the forefront. On Aug. 21, City of Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer signed a proclamation declaring Sept. 9 International FASD Awareness Day. Camrose and area residents are invited to take part in spreading the awareness during the Walk for Awareness on Sept. 9, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Camrose Association for Community Living (CAFCL) located at 4604 57 Street, to the Camrose Public Library (weather permitting). The initiative to create FASD awareness continues with cake and juice being served at the Camrose Public Library from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. In support of Interna-
tional FASD Awareness Day, Camrose Boston Pizza will be serving “Free Mocktails for Mommy”, non-alcoholic beverages for expectant mommies on Sept. 9. The number nine represents the nine months of pregnancy that a woman should abstain from the use of alcohol, thus helping to ensure the best start for the baby. “Alcohol is a popular drink in Canada with special social and cultural significance, yet it may also cause harm,” said FASD educator with Prairie Central FASD Association Jen Willes. “It is important to know that alcohol-free pregnancies protect babies from the possibility of being born with FASD. Alcohol crosses the placenta and the developing baby cannot break down alcohol as quickly as an adult, so it may give the alcohol time to damage the developing cells of the baby.” Prairie Central FASD Association supports education and awareness about pregnancy and alcohol and believes everyone has a role in preventing FASD. “There is no amount or type of alcohol that is known to be safe in pregnancy,” warned Willes. To learn more about FASD, visit any of the following websites prairiecentralfasd.ca, fasd.alberta. ca or canfasd.ca.

Lee keeping it real at the Bailey By Lori Larsen
Alberta country artist Donny Lee, will be kicking up some tunes at the Bailey Theatre during a return visit to Camrose on Sept. 19 beginning at 7:30 p.m. Donny is looking forward to getting up close and personal with the audience in a concert unlike any other, where the vibe of the audience determines the songs of the evening. “I love Camrose,” said Donny adding that it is reminiscent of rural Alberta. “This time we elected to go with the Bailey Theatre. I really enjoy a theatre setting because it gives us an opportunity to breath. It is not just about seeing how many songs we can get in during a performance.” He said the band will be working off a bit of a guideline for the show, but admits that 99 per cent of the time that gets thrown to the wayside and they end up rolling with whatever the crowd is feeling. “The minute you engage with the crowd and start to get a feel for what is working for them and what is not working for them, it is very easy to just flip the switch, especially when it comes to the cover songs. “If they are digging oldschool traditional country music–George Jones, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, then we are going down that road. But if they get a little pep in their step with Alabama, Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson or George Strait, then that is where we are going. Wherever I feel the crowd is going we are going to be quick to go there.” Donny said that his gigs in Nashville have taught him to be versatile, and able to change at a moments notice. He indicated that playing to suit the crowd mixes things up for, not only the crowd they are performing for, but for them as well. “I love the art of entertaining people. My agenda by the end of the show is to make sure that every person in the crowd feels like I notice they are there, shared a moment with them and give them an experience they won’t forget. People remember the moment you left them not the song that you sang.” The Fort Saskatchewan artist introduced his first release to Canadian Country radio in March with “Country Way Of Life” off of his self-titled album Who I Am, that particular song speaks to a slower pace of life, lived by an older generation who worked hard and enjoyed the simple things. He has his sixth release out to Canadian radio and it is charting in the top 100. He has played the music scene in
Nashville the for the past five years and has become a very popular performer. He has been nominated the past two years for the ACMA Male Artist of the year category. Besides an all around entertainer that obviously has a passion for what he does, he and wife Shauna are also strong advocates of giving back to the communities they live and play in. “Shauna and I have always felt really connected with the food bank, so when we go to these cities or towns we choose the local food bank as the beneficiary of moneys we earn during shows,” which he related is done a variety of ways, but by far the most popular is through a “Tip Jug.” “I bring out a tip jug explaining to the audience that we realize they have Donny Lee
already paid to see the show; but the good news about this tip jug is none of the money goes to any of us on stage, 100 per cent of the tip jug money goes right back to your local food bank.” Recognizing the need for food banks goes beyond those falling upon hard times, to include children that are going to school hungry and sleeping in tents; the idea of giving where he can, resonated strongly with him. “We use our platform to try and create awareness and help out the local food bank. The best part is, not only do people generously give but are smiling when they do and seem so happy to donate.” This down-home country boy will be bringing joy to the stage and some help to the hungry with his show and promises to send everyone home feeling good.
Happy New Beginnings!
At this quixotic season, plants are getting ready to die down; it’s a time of reaping, not planting; days are getting shorter and nights longer; yet it feels like “new beginnings.” By virtue of age and non-occupation, I’m a couple of generations away from the back-to-school loop. Still, I’m feeling it in the air–that sense of new possibilities. Last week’s Booster captured it, with more in this issue. Whatever your passion or hobby, somewhere in the community there’s probably a group or program to feed your interest. For students and teachers, it’s new school supplies, new labels on everything, maybe new clothes, wondering what the new school year will bring. I’ve had a few conversations with post-high-school students moving away from home into new kinds of education. More than one described the desire to meet new people, perhaps different kinds of people than those they’ve known so far. One woman said, remembering her first year away from home, “When I first met the others in my program, it was like I found my tribe. These people get me!” Then I stumbled across a quote from actress Emma Watson: “I’m not going to school just for academics. I wanted to share ideas, to be around people who are passionate about learning.” And a quote from beloved Dr. Seuss: “You’re off to great places, today is your day. Your mountain is waiting so get on your way!” Even for us old coots (a term of respect), activities are resuming or new ones emerging. I’m feeling stirrings of new projects. Coming out of summer hibernation, I’m ready to rejoin. Almost. Possibly as a way to delay getting fully active again, I went in search of quotes about “new season, new beginnings.” One recurring theme (which my Inner Procrastinator really didn’t want to hear) was to get going. “The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.” Walt Disney “Whatever you do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius and power and magic in it.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Lao Tzu “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” Martin Luther King “Do not wait until the conditions are perfect to begin. Beginning makes the conditions perfect.” Alan Cohen Another theme was beginning again: “Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.” Henry Ford “Starting over can be challenging, but also it can be a great opportunity to do things differently.” Catherine Pulsifer “Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.” Carl Bard Some quotes made me stop and think: “Dissatisfaction is a great starting point, for it is there that we have the most power, strength, and energy to push change through.” David DeNotaris “You can’t start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading the last one.” Unknown “Sometimes you have to do what you don’t love, so that you can do what you do love.” Unknown “Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” St. Francis of Assisi “Make today so awesome yesterday gets jealous.” Unknown “Morning will come, it has no choice.” Marty Rubin And finally, whenever I read this poem, the first verse irritates me, and then inspires me to start anyway. Start Close In by David Whyte Start close in, don’t take the second step or the third, start with the first thing close in, the step you don’t want to take. ***

Misery Mountain Boys
The Rose City Roots Music Society are hosting the Misery Mountain Boys on Friday, Sept. 13 at 8 p.m. You might hear the tunes of the Misery Mountain Boys drifting from Northern Alberta or from behind a rotating bookcase of a 1930s speakeasy. Harkening back to a simpler time, the Boy’s create a collaborative soundscape infused with humour, tongue-in-cheek wit, nostalgia, and playfulness. With a mix of catchy originals and contemporary songs reimagined in driving swing, the melodies of the band deliver themselves as both surprising and inevitable. The band offers a diverse range of sonic experiences, urging audiences to gyration in the tassel-clad, sweaty swing numbers, and swaying in the velvety jazz tunes. The Misery Mountain Boys is the black sheep brainchild of frontman Steven Gevenich, supplanted and enriched by bassist Lindsey Bueckert, clarinetist/ saxophonist Sam Toms and drummer Ethan Markwart.
Each member brings an impressive musicianship to the seven-year musical partnership and this is readily apparent in the confidence of the four piece they embody. Playful bass lines, energetic, snareheavy drums, meandering and melodic clarinet and Steven’s own skillful jazz guitar and gentle, gravely voice form the musical landscape of the Misery Mountain Boys. Honouring homage to the prohibition era practice of transporting liquor in milk bottles, their new release, “Milk & Moonshine”, is an embodiment of simplicity and rhythmic abandon. Moving organically from jazzy shuffles to saccharine love songs to upbeat jump blues, the collective delivers an offering both lighthearted and confident, breezy and grounded in their shared love of entertainment. A musical rarity in an industry busy with melancholy, the Misery Mountain Boys are a confident celebration of all that is exciting and moving about being alive. The project firmly asserts that playfulness and ease are sacred, and we all have the right to boogie.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING
Are you passionate about your community? Consider volunteering for a Council appointed Committee!
Why the City of Camrose is implementing the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program: 1. 2. 3. 4.
To maintain and improve the City’s water quality. To improve water flow and pressure in the water distribution system. To reduce bacterial growth, restore disinfectant residual, and improve water colour. Unidirectional Flushing uses 40% less water than traditional flushing programs due to increased water velocity. 5. In addition to scouring the water pipes, the UDF Program also gives the City the opportunity to check, exercise, and maintain all water valves and hydrants.
The City of Camrose is seeking adult residents to serve as Members at Large on the following Committees: • Heritage Advisory Committee (1 Member) • Community Transit Advisory Committee (3 Members) Make a Difference! For more information on the above committees, appointment process, and to obtain an application form, visit www.camrose. ca or contact City Hall at 780-672-4426.
This year’s UDF program began July 25, 2019, starting with Zone A (in Area 2) and will continue for 2-3 months. Water service should not be disrupted during the flushing process. There may be a slight drop in pressure or a presence of discolouration in the water from the minerals and sediments being flushed from the pipes. If a discolouration is noticed, please turn the tap off for 15 minutes and flush from your bathtub tap until the water is clear. If there are any questions or concerns in regards to the Unidirectional Flushing Program please feel free to contact Emily Baum at the City of Camrose Engineering Department at 780-672-4428.
Please submit applications via fax to 780-672-2469 OR email legservices@camrose.ca OR in person at City Hall, 5204-50 Avenue.

Derksen shares cello music at arts awards event in Bailey By Murray Green
Alberta cellist Cris Derksen will help celebrate the Lt. Governor’s Arts Awards program on Sept. 14 at the Bailey Theatre starting at 7:30 p.m. Saturday evening starts by recognizing a variety of indigenous leaders and performers. As guests
enter the theatre, Elder Roy Louis from Maskwacis will be conducting a traditional smudging. Storyteller Brian Cutknife from the Mackwacis Education School Commission will relate stories about Treaty 6. The variety will continue with local singer, Ron Makokis. The feature performer
will be acclaimed cellist Derksen, accompanied by drummer Jessie Baird and circle dancer Alex Twin. “I have always been interested in the intersections of the contemporary and the traditional art forms; music, visual arts, fashion writing, theatre all move forward through
these intersections of trying to explain the human condition in new ways by pushing the old in new directions,” said Cris. She is originally from a line of chiefs on the NorthTall Cree Reserve on her father’s side and a line of strong Mennonite homesteaders on her mother’s.
Cris, a Juno nominated classically trained cellist and composer, braids the traditional and contemporary, weaving her classical background and her Indigenous ancestry together with new school electronics to create genre-defying music.

Grieving loss by suicide By Lori Larsen
With disturbing statistics that include Alberta having the third highest suicide rate among the provinces and that more people in Alberta die by suicide every year than in fatal vehicle collisions, Hospice Society of Camrose and District, in partnership with the Camrose and Area Risk Education (CARE) Coalition and Canadian Mental Health Association (Camrose) are co-facilitating a Suicide Grief Support Group open to anyone who is a survivor of a loss to suicide. Beginning on Wednesday, Sept. 18 running 10 weeks, ending Nov. 20, the free Suicide Grief Support Group program is being offered to survivors of loss from suicide. The group sessions will be held on Wednesday evenings starting at 6:30 p.m. lasting for 90 minutes. “As many rural Albertans die from suicide as urban,” remarked Hospice Society of Camrose and District program and grief and bereavement coordinator Bill Harder. “There are approximately 15 suicides a year in the Camrose catchment area and most of them are males aged 30 to 49 (highest suicide rate in Alberta according to age and gender.)” The staggering numbers and the overwhelming need to provide a resource for survivors of loss by suicide were motivating factors for Harder and co-facilitator Jenn Pilot to put into motion the Grief Support initiative. Having worked as an EMT and currently working with the Canadian Mental Health Association, Pilot felt the need to sit on the Regional Suicide Prevention Council and has done so since 2017. Through her work on the council she soon learned there were no resources available in Camrose and area that addressed suicide prevention, specifically grief for loss by suicide, so she approached Lucy Ernst and Carol Breitkreutz of the CARE Coalition. “In September 2018 we launched a four week pilot project grief walk just for suicide survivors,” said Harder. Despite this project not experiencing a strong uptake, Harder and Pilot still felt an urgent need to proceed with the Suicide Grief Support Group and after conversation with stakeholders including the Battle River School Division, Elk Island Catholic School Division, Camrose Open Door, Family Violence Action Society, Alberta Health Service, Canadian Mental Health Association, Hospice Society of Camrose and District and CARE ensued, the pilot program was developed. “We decided this would be a group for adults only – 18 plus,” explained Harder. “Elk Island Catholic Schools and Battle River School Division are still interested, just not at forefront.” Pilot was able to acquire the necessary material and facilitator manual used by the Canadian Mental Health Association (Edmonton) accredited program. “The only places that currently have a program in place are Edmonton and Calgary, so they (CMHA Edmonton) offered to bring Bill and myself in for training,” said Pilot. Harder indicated the material is well laid out and takes a gentle week by week approach, delving a little deeper each week into the different levels of loss from suicide grief, something both Harder and Pilot have experienced first hand. “When I was 20 my wife’s, at the time, 16-year-old brother completed suicide,” articulated Harder. “We didn’t see it coming and in retrospect, after the fact, we could read various signs but we were not picking those up prior to his death and it was just terrible.” Harder said that without experiencing the death of a friend or family member who has completed suicide it is difficult to describe the unique aspect of that loss. “Of course you simply have the sorrow and grief that is intendant to a loss, but on top of that there are these brutal waves of guilt.” He noted that he questioned himself as to how he may have been responsible for the brother-inlaw’s choices, how he (Bill) may have contributed to those choices. “There is the shame because of the taboo nature of suicide loss. In our culture we are still barely coming off, historically, a religious
wave, in various religions, that suicide death is unacceptable, sinful.” Harder explained that there is this sense of alienation and loneliness in the kind of grief that accompanies loss from suicide. “I am not saying it doesn’t exist in other losses but it is exemplified in a suicide loss. “For myself it created a mindset of legitimizing that kind of death. I struggled with suicidal idealization after that because I thought if Grant can do this too, as a way to get out of really hard places, maybe that is a real thing to do.”
Harder went on to say. “The flow of this was I didn’t access resources that I needed to at the time. They were there I just didn’t access them because of guilt and shame and taboo.” Harder explained that it wasn’t until 25 years later, in his professional career while trying to provide support to a family who had a 16-year-old who completed suicide, that he realized how much impact his brother-in-law’s suicide had actually had on him. “I remember thinking I don’t know why I am a mess. “Sometime after that event Harder was able to be mindful of the affect that the suicide death of his brother-in-law (at the time) had on him all those years ago and how it had derailed him when he was needed by the family he was helping. “That is why I think it is critically important that we provide service to people so that these events do not derail them in their lives. It will change their lives, for sure, as sorrow does.” But Harder is convinced that with proper support through programs such as the Suicide Grief Support Group, people can heal. “The shame, trauma, guilt that often accompany this type of loss can create all sorts of emotional and psychological issues and having good care can prevent us from taking ourselves to places we don’t want to be later.” Sharing her own personal journey with the effects of suicide, Pilot expressed the same passion for importance of a suicide grief support work. “Previous to my work with CMHA, I came from an EMS background. I had seen and done things related to suicide,” she commented adding that one of the most poignant memories she had was one of the very first calls she attended as a EMT student. “It was a completed suicide. Out of all the tragic things I have seen that particular incident has stuck with me the most and that was well over 10 years ago but I can still remember every last detail of that call.” Not realizing at the time the profound impact this incident would have on her life, Pilot didn’t access any of the services, talk to anyone or admit to anyone it was bothering her. “I ignored it for as long as I did, which resulted in my own personal stresses and eventually lead me to become a suicide attempt survivor myself. I know what it is like to be there to feel those things and all the complications with family and work that result from it.” She managed to get through this dark time in her life on her own and with some help from family and friends, but another event several years later would once again derail her. “My best friend died by suicide. There were a lot of complications around that relative to religion and not being allowed to speak about it or even being involved,” said Pilot obviously still deeply affected.
“I have a fairly good amount of experience with suicide and all that is involved. In my medical background I have seen a lot of families left behind from the death of a loved one by old age or medical complications. But suicide death has a much different type of grief. There is a huge amount of guilt and questions–why did this happen, what could have I done, why didn’t I see it coming? It derails a person and all the people that had ties with the person who completed suicide.” Pilot reiterated the importance of having support groups and encouraging conversation about suicide. “We need to get rid of that stigma, that if you talk about suicide it means someone is going to commit suicide because it absolutely does not mean that. The more we as a community can get out and talk about this and show we are not afraid to have these discussions, I think the better mental health we can create for people.” Harder concurred adding that, particularly in schools, there is a stigma that a suicide is going to create a ripple effect. “There is simply no research that supports that.” With an alarming statistic that in Canada suicide is the second leading cause of death for children and youth/ young adults, Harder concluded with a tone of concern. “There are children in elementary school that are talking about suicide. What is happening to us as a people that our children feel there is no other way out than to die.” On Sept. 10, World Suicide Prevention Day, people are encouraged to recognize the importance of creating awareness and having conversation about suicide. There will be a maximum of 12 participants in the Suicide Grief Support Group. If you are interested, contact Bill Harder by email at program@camrosehospice.com or by telephone at 780-608-0636. Interested participants will be required to meet with Harder and Pilot to ensure the Group is the right fit for serving that person’s individual needs.
Suicide awareness By Lori Larsen
The matter of suicide has, historically, been a difficult and often taboo topic to discuss. On Sept. 10, people around the world will ban together to bring about awareness, talk about suicide and work on prevention. The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) collaborates with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) to host World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD). Alberta Health Services supports WSPD in its aim to increase awareness, build knowledge and create conversations about suicide. All across the province, events, communication and awareness-raising activities will occur not only on Sept. 10, but throughout the week or month as well. This year’s theme is Working Together to Prevent Suicide. The goals of bringing about awareness is to educate the public on the warning signs of suicide, encourage conversation and listening and recognize when and how to get help. In 2018, 7,254 Albertans visited the Emergency Department for suicide attempts, of those visits 50 per cent consisted of youth, ages 24 and under. Suicide is preventable. Warning signs of suicide could include talking about suicide, giving away possessions, saying goodbye, researching suicide methods and talking about being a burden. The following information is provided to assist those grieving a loss by suicide. Know that your grief is unique and takes time. Recovery is possible. Numbness, shock, forgetfulness, anger, and guilt can all be normal reactions following a death by suicide. Healing after a loss can be helped through talking, accepting help, eating well, exercising and making time for yourself. If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, reach out for help. Call Health Link at 811 or the Mental Health Help Line at 1-877-303-2642, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Kick it to the Curb
FEEL GREAT! • • • • •
By Murray Green
Camrose residents can take their items they no longer use to the curb, to allow others a chance to treasure them. The Kick It To The Curb event is on Sept. 6 to 8. Take the items that you want to get rid of and put them on your grass area between the curb and the sidewalk, or on your front lawn. People can grab the items for free that they need to furnish their home. This is also a great idea for students moving out, or going to university and don’t have all of the things they need for their new residence. After the weekend, you must gather the leftover items and store them once again, or donate them to a local charity. Camrose ReStore accepts items during business hours on Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can call 780-6724484 to arrange for pick-up of large items. The items are used for Habitat for Humanity homes, or sold to raise money. “We are always looking for furniture in good shape and lighting items including lamps. Household items, tools and building materials tend to be cycled through regularly as well,” said ReStore manager Lowell Dahlman. The Emergency Clothing and Furniture Depot of Camrose is a non-funded part of Centra Cam that provides clothing, furniture, housewares, toys and home décor items to residents of Camrose and area. It is open Monday to Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for donations at the back door. Call 780-608-1681 for more details. “We are looking for furniture, small appliances in working order, children’s clothing and men’s clothing,” said depot manager Iona Brager. Keep in mind not to donate any item that is broken, is in poor repair, damaged, dirty, have excess pet hair or tobacco smoke.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster University of Alberta Augustana Campus psychology and kinesiology student Amara Onyia greets new student Sheyne Baker, passenger seat, with her father Brian Baker to the campus. Brian was dropping off Sheyne with mixed emotions as she returns to attend university in Camrose after living here approximately 14 years prior.
Several residents attended the City of Camrose regular council meeting in City Chambers, on Aug. 20, to speak to the recommendation by city administration to discontinue the swan program. During a committee of whole meeting held on July 15, City of Camrose administration presented a report recommending council consider ending the City Swan Program prior to release of the swans to Mirror Lake and Duggan Pond in 2020. Public speaks
Speaking first during public commentary was Joanne Olsen who asked the City and council to consider keeping the swan program, indicating that it has become an important part of Camrose’s identity. “The swans are an icon of the City. They have brought enjoyment to children and adults for many decades,” said Olsen suggesting more time for further information and discussion be considered. Ed and Muriel Holdsworth were in favour of keeping the swan program thriving in Camrose and indicated that people need to be more responsible in ensuring they don’t get harmed by the swans. “The swans have brought enjoyment to many people throughout the years and are a unique feature to our city,” said Muriel. Ed added that the swans are a tourist attraction and inquired as to whether or not the bylaw officer has investigated into the issues with the swans. Ilene Huebner also spoke in favour of keeping the swan program. “I have spent many years enjoying the swans. My grandchildren and great grandchildren come from Saskatchewan to see the swans. I feel it is a great benefit to Camrose to have the swans here.” Eva and Tom Tomaszewski spoke about supporting the discontinuation of the swan program, citing that they have witnessed aggressive behavior of the swans towards other wildlife species, particularly waterfowl on Duggan Pond. “Many times we have witnessed the swans aggressively killing newly hatched waterfowl and shore birds.” Finally Iris Smith spoke in favour of continuing the swan program. “If I tell people I am from the City with the swans they know it is Camrose. People have to keep a safe distance with nature. They are a beautiful part of history.” Humane treatment
When the matter returned to council on Aug. 20, more information was provided concerning the humane treatment of the swans and the approxi-
mate cost of having to potentially build a proper swan abode, should the program continue. The four swans that presently have habitat on Mirror Lake (Trumpeters) and Duggan Pond (Mutes), have had their wings surgically clipped to prevent them from flying away and causing injury or death to themselves and make it possible to recapture the swans to be housed in indoor pens from October to May. Concerns from council during both the July 15 and Aug. 20 meetings were voiced as to whether or not the swans were being kept as humanely as possible, despite City staff’s efforts to provide the utmost care for the birds.
In Poole’s Aug. 20 report he indicated that the City Parks Department recently acquired some quotes on the cost of construction of a new swan abode, to be approximately $462,000 (basic 40’ x 40’) to $530,000 (basic 40’ x 60’). Swan history
The Camrose Swan Program began in the 1960s when two Mute swans were donated to the City of Camrose from Halifax. The City of Camrose possesses an Avi-Cultural permit from the federal government for the purpose of harbouring migratory birds in captivity. “In the past, the swan pairs would produce offspring each summer which were also housed all winter in the swan abode,” explained City of Camrose community services general manager Ryan Poole. “The following spring, the offspring were released with permission of the federal government at Elk Island National Park. Since 2015, that program has been disallowed due to the possibility of disease being transferred from the swans kept in captivity. “Part of the Camrose Swan program involved trading aging swans with numerous waterfowl breeders in exchange for younger pairs,” said Poole. “However, it has become increasingly difficult as there are fewer breeders willing to take on these aging birds.” Poole further explained that this poses a problem every three years because the swans have to be traded before they can mate and produce offspring. City of Camrose parks
and recreation director Ken Krueger indicated that as a result of conversation with the breeder the City has dealt with in the past for taking mature swans, this breeder would be willing to accept the current swans this fall, only. “He would be willing to take the current swans, but there was no indication that he would accept them after that time frame.” Public safety
Aside from these concerns, Poole expressed the major issue of public safety, which has more recently come to light as the result of several reported incidents involving aggressive behaviour from the swans directed towards humans. “One in particular involved the swans attacking a toddler at Mirror Lake Park and one attacking an older individual resulting in the individual requiring medical attention,” said Poole. Poole also noted that the swans pose a danger to themselves and others by moving onto roadways and other private and public property. Council advised City administration to seek expert opinion on whether or not the current swan abode is, in fact, suitable to be housing the birds for the winter months. As well, provide further information to the public regarding all aspects of the swan program. City of Camrose manager Malcolm Boyd summed up administration’s position with a recommendation to council to weigh the pros and cons of the swan program. “The program does have an iconic heritage perspective; however, that comes with a financial cost as well as health and safety risks.” Boyd added other points for council’s consideration. “Having the swans on the lake also limits the amount of recreational activity on Mirror Lake such as canoeing or paddle boats and of course, the matter of the humane treatment of the swans. There is a societal change taking place when it comes to animals in captivity. Zoos are changing and municipalities are doing things differently.” One final consideration brought forward by Boyd was concerns surrounding the environment. “Because the swans are not native to the area, the fact that they are here means that wildlife that would be here, such as geese and ducks, are chased out of the area.” The matter was postponed until the regular council meeting on September 16.

Debnam treasures his classic 1967 Dodge Dart By Murray Green
Al Debnam has always loved the look and feel of a Dodge Dart. So when the opportunity came to buy a 1967 GT model, he leaped at the chance. “A couple of years ago I found this car in Lacombe. My very first car in high school was a Dart Swinger, but I had an accident with it and I always wanted to get one again with that style. When I had the opportunity to get this one, I jumped on it,” confessed Al. The Dodge Dart is an automobile originally built by Dodge from 1958 to 1976 in North America, with production extended to later years in various other markets. “The car was pretty much finished. I made some tweaks to the motor and drive train, but it was in great shape.” The Dart features a 340 engine that produces about 400 horsepower. The Dart and its sister model—the Plymouth Valiant—were substantially redesigned for the 1967 model year and they captured the young driver market. “I always liked the style of the Darts. I wanted the same body style back and I really love this colour (red). This car has been gone through and it is clean. You could eat off the bottom of it.” Over its original 13-year

In addition to new styling in 1967, the cars received revised steering systems, wider front track and frame rail spacing, and redesigned K-members capable of accepting larger engines. The Dart would keep this basic form, with facelifts consisting of revised front and rear end styling and interior trim, until the end of A-body production. The restyled Dart for 1967 featured a rear window with compound inverse curves. Curved side glass was used for the first time on a Chrysler compact. New dual-plane front end contour consisted of the center section of the grille, bumper and leading edge of the hood were recessed from the front plane of the car. The single headlamps were placed forward of the recessed centre section, defining the front plane. Park/ turn lamps were set into the grille, in the corners formed by the transition area between the recessed and forward sections. This same front end treatment, with minor cosmetic changes to the grille and the park/turn lamps relocated to the front bumper. The 1967 Dart, along with all other 1967 Chrysler products, got a new dual-circuit brake hydraulic system to ensure loss of pressure in the front brakes would not prevent the rear brakes from working and vice versa.
made some upgrades to the car so I can take it on longer cruises without any worries. I like to go to as many car shows as I can, when I’m not working. They are gaining popularity and you could hit one every weekend,” he laughed. The newer body was trimmer and proved extremely popular, causing sales of the Dart to surpass compacts from Ford and GM. “I love Dodges and I have fond memories of the Dart. I’m happy that most of the work was done. The guy gave me a big binder (100 pages) of pictures of everything that was done to the car.” The 1967 redesign removed all traces of the older Virgil Exner styling that proved less popular by the early 1960s. Debnam will be featuring his Dart at the annual Bittern Lake Show and Shine on Saturday, Sept. 7. The fifth annual event
begins with registration at 10 a.m. to noon with the show running from noon until 3 p.m. near the Bittern Lake Community Hall. A concession and silent
auction will be on-site. Trophies for People’s Choice in each class will be passed out. All proceeds go to maintaining the Community Hall.

Another academic year is upon us. Professors are wrapping up summer research and writing projects and turning their attention to their courses. Students are returning from summer jobs and gearing themselves up for their studies. Staff are steeling themselves for the unrelenting onslaught of student and professor needs and demands. But what does the beginning of a new academic year Geraint Osborne, mean for the larger Camrose Sociology, Augustana community? At this time of Campus, University year it is useful to consider the of Alberta unique town-gown relationship that exists between Augustana and Camrose. These are two distinct communities wedded together like an arranged marriage, with each partner trying their best to make the relationship work as effectively and harmoniously as possible. Historically, dating back to medieval times, town–gown relations have been a source of difficulty, frustration, and annoyance for both the town and the university. During this time, given the religious roots of many universities, the town was seen as morally corrupt, a place that should be avoided by students seeking to better themselves. These conflicts and tensions should not define the relationship between Camrose and Augustana. There is much mutual good that arises from this special relationship. Universities provide community members with a wide range of well-paying employment opportunities and the influx of students throughout the year boosts the consumer base for local property renters, businesses, restaurants, and pubs and bars. Universities need regular upkeep and many local plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters, and other tradespeople, are routinely called upon. Students provide a volunteer base for the community, especially through community service-learning strategies that, in turn, provide important hands-on learning opportunities for students. Upon graduating, these students are a source of untapped workers who can stay in the community and contribute innovative ideas to the local economy and services. Moreover, given concerns over student loneliness, anxiety and mental health, it’s important to consider how towns provide students with health services, along with important activities, connections, and opportunities outside the monotony and stress of classrooms, labs, and library research. Professors engage in community research and lend their expertise to community organizations and initiatives. Meanwhile, the community often contributes to professors’ research by providing a wide range of participants and a rich variety of research settings. But economic and social benefits are, on their own, not enough to assure good relations. Indeed, what research shows, is that for an effective and harmonious relationship to exist, ideally, the boundaries between the two partners should be seamless. Community engagement, by having students and professors active in the community, is certainly important in this regard. But so too is having community members active on university campuses. Research has found that when community members are invited on a regular basis by the university to explore the cultural, intellectual, athletic and artistic opportunities that are available on campus, they have a much better view of the university and its role in the community. As the late Berdie Fowler, editor the Camrose Booster, proud Camrosian, and the recipient of Augustana’s first honorary degree, once wrote me, “Augustana is a gem in our community for many different reasons, and I believe our community seriously endeavours to provide an environment in which a university will flourish. With mutual appreciation and support, both will thrive.” To this end, we at Augustana look forward to another exciting year of community engagement opportunities for students and faculty that Camrose so generously provides. We also hope that community members take advantage of the many events and activities that Augustana has available to them, including sporting competitions, public lectures, “Lunch and Learns,” candidates forums, conferences, art exhibitions, drama productions, concerts and many other events held on campus. We look forward to seeing you!

Gregory Lester Thirsk February 5, 1947 ~ August 29, 2019 Greg Thirsk was born on February 5, 1947, the second son of Pearl and Bob Thirsk, at New Westminster, BC, when his parents were spending the winter there. During his school years at Rosalind, Greg excelled at sports, especially track, baseball and football. Later, when he went to Camrose Composite High School and Camrose Lutheran College, football became the highlight of his life. He later played junior football with the Edmonton Huskies for three years. His dad, mom and sisters Valerie and Pat were proud spectators at every home game. After the games, they enjoyed picnics in Kinsmen Park. Greg worked for Edmonton City Telephones for thirteen years. While there he met Ginette Bedard, a French-Canadian girl from Charlesbourg, Quebec. Prior to her marriage to Greg, she was a stewardess with the Canadian Armed Forces. Greg and Ginette were married on October 24, 1970. They have two sons, Michael and Mark. Greg, Ginette and the boys left the city in 1979 and made their home at Kelsey. He then bought his favorite toy, a white Harley Davidson touring motorcycle, on which he accumulated 99,715 kilometres. In 2017, Greg and Ginette moved to Camrose into their lovely retirement home. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Ginette; sons Michael (Cindy) of Rosalind and their daughters Sara (Chad Morrison) and Chloe; and Mark (Jackie) of Camrose and their sons Braydon and Damon. Enid Genevieve Watland August 12, 1918 ~ August 25, 2019 Enid Genevieve Watland passed away on August 25, 2019 at the age of 101. She was born to Emil and Muriel Bergman on August 12, 1918 in Langham, Saskatchewan. She went to school in Watson, Saskatchewan where she finished her grade eight. Enid attended CLBI and during that time she met Theol Watland at Armena Lutheran Church. On July 10, 1953 they were married and to the joy of this marriage, they had three children. The family lived on a farm in the Dinant District. Later moving to Camrose, Enid cooked at the Camrose Children’s Centre for many years. Enid and Theol enjoyed trips and tours with their friends. Enid enjoyed her needle work, gardening and entertaining family and friends. After retiring, she spent many hours at the Senior Centre, carpet bowling and floor curling. She was a master at Scrabble. Enid was an active member at Curves until her 92nd year. Enid was a strong supporter of the Mission Prayer League and Messiah’s Women’s groups. She loved to sing and was part of the Ladies Chorus at Messiah until her health started failing her. Enid is predeceased by her parents and her five siblings, Melvin Bergman, Gerald Bergman, Evelyn Kobayashi, Joyce Miller and Jeanette Knudson. She leaves to cherish her memory her children Darlene (Wayne) Obenauer, Janice (Greg) Sharpe, Dave (Pam) Watland; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Enid will always be remembered for her positive outlook on life and her love for God and His purposes. A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, August 31, 2019 from the Messiah Lutheran Church, 4810-50 Street, Camrose with Rev. Bev Swanson officiating. God saw you getting tired A cure was not to be, So He put His arms around you And whispered, “Come to Me.” With tearful eyes, we watched you And saw you fade away, Although we loved you dearly, We could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, Your tender hands at rest, God took you home to prove to us He only takes the best. Love you forever, – Paula and family

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.
