This year, Fire Prevention Week is all about educating everyone about the small, but important, actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe. Stop and consider that if there is a fire in your home, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely. The theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign is:
Not Every Hero Wears a Cape – Plan and Practice Your Escape!” “
Indeed, in small communities such as Camrose, the Fire Department is largely comprised of dedicated volunteers, each a hero without a cape, who devote large amounts of time being ready for action when a fire call comes into the station. Each lives and works here and actively contributes to the community we all proudly call our home. To see who is involved in Camrose Fire Department and to learn more about Fire Prevention Week, see pages 20 to 25 of this issue of The Booster.

NEWS REPORTERS Candice Nichols and children Nicole and Lucas, along with Steven Dammann, a cousin, read the Camrose Booster while waiting their turn at the outhouse at North Dyke Campground on Glennifer Lake. The Nichols family live in Brooks. They were part of a family campout at the lake. This was the first time many of the family members had been to this beautiful Provincial Park. The weather was questionable, but not raining! The outhouse was clean and well-stocked, so The Booster did not have to be used in the old-fashioned way. Thanks to Lucas Streicher of Brooks for this photo! Your $20.00 cheque is in the mail! Do you enjoy reading The Camrose Booster? Show us with a picture! Drop off, mail or email a photo of you reading your Booster while vacationing, along with a brief explanation. Be sure your travel destination can be identified by a sign or landmark. Or, have someone take your photo while you’re enjoying the home team paper in an unlikely situation. Throughout the year, these photos will be published in The Camrose Booster. A $20.00 cash prize will be paid to you if your entry is published, so be sure to include your mailing address with your entry. Use your creativity and send us your photo!

Federal elections and unfulfilled promises
As someone who studies Indigenous history and political issues, I am all too familiar with the unfulfilled promises made by Canadian politicians. For those of you wondering which federal party is best for the Indigenous voter, all I can say is that no such voter exists. There is too much diversity contained in the term to definitively state one party is better than all Daniel Sims, of the others. They all make History, promises and, if history is University of Alberta any lesson, many of them will Augustana Campus remain unfulfilled. Trudeau talked a lot about reconciliation, but didn’t do much to forward it. Based on previous elections, I doubt other parties will differ greatly, although I imagine the Conservatives, who as of the writing of this article, have not released a platform and will make less grandiose promises of doing so. Unfulfilled promises have been a common theme in Canadian politics from the start and have encompassed a wide range of issues. Just look at the 1867 federal election when the Anti-Confederation Party swept Nova Scotia on a promise of undoing confederation in that province. When it became apparent that London would not allow this reversal to occur, the party dissolved and most joined their leader, Joseph Howe, in joining the Liberal-Conservative Party. The Liberal-Conservative Party was not some third party in federal politics at the time. They were the political party of John A. MacDonald. Unfortunately, to avoid confusion with the Liberal Party, the full name was not always used then or now. One can make a parallel to the Progressive Conservatives of the 20th century both in name as well as in the fact that both parties emerged out of a union with like-minded liberals. In MacDonald’s case, they were liberals who supported confederation, while in the Progressive Conservative’s case, they were liberals who had formed their own party in 1920– the Progressive Party–after joining Robert Borden’s Union Government during the First World War against the wishes of the Liberal Party of Canada. Provincially, the emergence of province parties in Ontario and Western Canada, in the form of United Farmers parties, bolstered their support. During the 1921 federal election, the Progressives dominated the Prairie provinces and, if it was not for their refusal to force members to vote in a block, would have formed the official opposition. This lack of cohesion would have hurt the party, especially since Mackenzie King actively worked to draw Progressive politicians back into the Liberal fold. Nonetheless, they would dominate Alberta in the 1926 election in no small part because of the success of their provincial wing, the United Farmers of Alberta (UFA). Three events in the 1930s would devastate the party. The first was the Great Depression. Like all of the exiting parties at the time, the Progressives were caught off guard and not sure how to deal with it. This lack of solutions helped other third parties emerge. The formation of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation in 1932 saw further defections from the Progressives. Finally, the 1934 sex scandal downed UFA premier John Brownlee when it was revealed that he had been having an affair with 18-year-old Vivian MacMillan after convincing her to move to Edmonton, telling her it was her duty to Alberta. This incident has been mostly forgotten – no doubt because there is no Alberta heritage marker or statue on Highway 16 commemorating it – but it does highlight the fact that politics in this country has occasionally involved scandals. As status Indians living in British Columbia, my father’s family did not gain to the right to vote in provincial elections until 1949 and federal elections until 1960. My mother’s family, on the other hand, has been voting in what became Canada long before 1867. Both sides remember slogans, broken promises and scandals and they, like I, will still vote on Oct. 21. As such, I would like to encourage you to use good judgement, carefully weigh out your options based on available information and choose wisely on election day.

Minister of advanced education visits Augustana Campus By Lori Larsen
On Sept. 3, the Alberta Minister of Advanced Education Demetrios Nicolaides was in Camrose at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus. Accompanied by Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely, Nicolaides was able to spend time touring the campus and sharing conversation with several Augustana faculty, staff and students. Part of the tour included the Jeanne
and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre and Founders Hall. “Post-secondary institutions are home to some of our province’s brightest thinkers and problem-solvers,” remarked Nicolaides. “It is important for me as the new minister to visit campuses across Alberta to engage with students, faculty, staff and leadership to listen and learn.”
Voting options for federal election By Murray Green
As electors you can choose the voting option that best suits your schedule. Elections Canada offices are now open in each of the 338 federal electoral districts. Electors can visit any Elections Canada office to get information, register, or vote. All Canadian citizens who are at least 18 years old on election day are eligible to vote. To vote, you must be registered. Most electors are already registered. To register online or to check or update your voter registration, electors can visit elections.ca/register. You can also visit an Elections Canada office, or call 1-800-463-6868 to request a mail-in registration form. Electors can register at any time between now and Oct. 15. If you miss this deadline, you can register at the polls on election day, just before you vote. To vote, you must show proof of your identity and address. There are many different pieces of identification that can be used to prove identity and address. The full list is available online. You can vote on election
day on Monday, Oct. 21; at one of the advance polls, open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11; Saturday, Oct. 12; Sunday, Oct. 13; or Monday, Oct. 14 or at an Elections Canada office. To vote at an Elections Canada office, electors must apply before Tuesday, Oct. 15, 6 p.m. Application forms are available at Elections Canada offices or online; on select campuses from Saturday, Oct. 5, to Wednesday, Oct. 9, using the special ballot process; or by mail. Electors must apply to vote by mail before Tuesday, Oct. 15, 6 p.m. Application forms to vote by mail are available online. They are also available at any Elections Canada office, or can be requested by calling 1‑800‑463‑6868. Electors voting by mail should plan ahead. They must allow time for their voting kit to reach them and for their marked ballot to return to Elections Canada. Returning officers may also set up voting kiosks in locations where electors may not be able to vote using traditional voting options. Eligible electors who live in long-term care facilities can vote by
regular ballot at a mobile polling station in their residence. For more information on this option, contact your Elections Canada office. Voting and identification rules are different for incarcerated electors and Canadian electors who live abroad. Electors who are members of the Canadian Armed Forces can now vote at a military polling station. In the Battle RiverCrowfoot riding, Damien C. Kurek of Camrose is the Conservative Party candidate, Geordie Nelson is the Green Party candidate, David Michaud is the People’s Party candidate, Dianne Clarke is the Liberal Party candidate and Natasha Fryzuk is the New Democratic Party candidate, as of Sept. 30. To help make your decision, Battle River-Crowfoot All Candidates Forums have been set for Oct. 3 in Drumheller, Tuesday, Oct. 8 in Camrose at 6:30 p.m. in the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre and Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. in the New Sarepta Community High School.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster On Sept. 17, Camrose Co-op Gas Bar held a Fuel Good Day and barbecue at both locations. Funds raised from the barbecue, seven cents from every litre of gas and $1 from every coffee and slush drink sold that day were donated locally to both the Service Options for Seniors (SOS) and Churchmice Players. Mayor Norm Mayer posing with Camrose Co-op Gas Bar operations manager Tony Metivier, was on hand to help frame up some donations.

Join the Camrose Genealogy Branch on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Camrose Public Library (downstairs meeting room) from noon until 4 p.m. for a free workshop featuring guest speaker, the first vice-president of the Alberta Genealogical Society (AGS), Lianne Kruger. Kruger will be covering the topics: using family search and Google Maps in genealogical research. Kruger’s interest in genealogy began as a teenager at the Latter Day Saints Family History Library where her mother volunteered each Saturday. “She sat me down in front of a microfilm reader, loaded it up, put a list of names beside me and left me there for the day, rolling through a film,” recalled Kruger. As a young adult, Kruger took courses at Brigham Young University for researching in Irish and American, as well as Latin, writing life histories, and understanding important documents. Following that, she taught Family History for five years (2000-05) at the Ogden Institute of Religion in Ogden, Utah. She has also taught computer software courses since 1982 for a variety of colleges and universities and is currently teaching at Red Deer College. “My goal while teaching is to make computer software learning fun and relaxing. BRCF assists school division with grant Submitted
The Battle River Community Foundation awarded a grant to the Battle River School Division. The grant is from income from the Zetsen Master Builders Young Parents Fund, created in 2013 with proceeds of a charity house build coordinated by Zetsen Master Builders. The grant provides support for noncore costs of offering the program to young parents who might otherwise be unable to complete their high school education. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects, such as this in East Central Alberta, which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual
donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $5,647,000 to support programs and facilities operated by organizations like the Battle River School Division. To learn more about the Learning Together Program, contact Judith Mazankowski, Learning Together program coordinator, 780-672-6137. On Nov. 19 to 22, City of Camrose administration and council will begin deliberations of the 2020 budget process. In the weeks prior to that, staff will be tasked with collecting information to present options to council regarding the services provided by the City. “The consistent message we hear from council is they want the City to focus on being fiscally responsible to residents and businesses,” explained City of Camrose manager Malcolm Boyd. “Council also recognizes that residents and businesses are experiencing tough times and council’s goal is to respond by avoiding tax increases.” The challenge for the City is to strike a balance between known increases to operations, such as increased expenses associated with the new swimming pool and the federally mandated upgrade to the Next Generation 9-1-1 system, and what service levels Council is willing to change or reduce. “Given the continued challenges within the provincial and regional economies, resulting in low growth forecasts, administration has been asked, through a specific Motion of Council, to review all service levels within City
departments and to identify options for reductions,” said Boyd. Boyd added that the City continually investigates opportunities to improve efficiencies, better, quicker and less expensive methods of performing City operations, such as the new Hotbox used to repair potholes in the City which decreases the actual time spent repairing and is proven to last longer. This year, Council has made it clear that service level reductions are on the table in order to evaluate opportunities to decrease the bottom line. “We do not anticipate there will be significant changes in services or staffing levels at this time, but are evaluating all options to ensure our service delivery is done in a fiscally responsible manner.” With the announcement of the provincial budget tabled until Oct. 24, there is a looming sense that services are going to be abated, the effects of which will have an impact on municipalities, including Camrose. Keeping all of these factors in mind, the City and Council will have their work cut out for them during the budget process. The anticipated date for the budget to come to council is Dec. 2.

Oct. 1 is National Seniors’ Day. Why not take an opportunity to let the seniors in your life know how valuable they are and how much they mean to you. According to the Camrose 2016 Census, the 65+ senior population makes up over 23 per cent of Camrose residents. Seniors are a vital part of any community contributing to the economy, supporting initiatives and events, both financially and through volunteerism, and providing the community with rich history. Take a moment to show your gratitude to a senior in your life or in the community with a simple acknowledgement or thank you, treat them to a cup of coffee or tea or share a lunch or meal. Take a moment to check out the great services and programs offered by the Camrose Service Options for Seniors (SOS) program. Or hop on board the Camrose Community Bus and have a conversation with a senior while heading to your stop. If you would like to share your gratitude for a senior on social media, the Government of Alberta offers opportunities on the Seniors in Canada Facebook page.

Mac Daddy Experience on stage Mac Daddy
By Murray Green
The Fleetwood Mac Experience celebrates the music of the iconic band with integrity and passion. This live experience takes you back to the classic lineup of the band, with respect for its artistry and influence on popular music and culture. You can hear all the classic tracks performed by Mac Daddy as Fleetwood Mac from the ’70s and ’80s and it even touches on their early years as a British blues band at the Bailey Theatre on Saturday, Oct. 5 starting at 8 p.m. “We had another band that was more of a party cover band. Our guitar player came to us with an idea to try and be a Fleetwood Mac tribute band. We had the right people to perform the roles, so we thought we would give it a try. That was about three years ago. We learned some music and it all fell together. It turned out to be a really good show,” said Crystal Goodfellow, who performs the role of Christine McVie on stage. “This music has stood
the test of time and appeals to a wide range of ages. It is good, well written music. People really connect with it. First, we wanted to make sure we covered all of the hits. Then we learned as much about the band as we could. They started as a ’60s blues band, so we looked at that material and learned a few songs,” shared Crystal. “We have a few offshoots from the popular songs that maybe didn’t get as much radio play, but are still great songs. We throw in a few surprises.” Mac Daddy also includes David Bowden as Mick Fleetwood, Laurie Slater as Stevie Nicks, David Gaitan Galvez as John McVie and Mark Donaghy as Lindsay Buckingham. “We loved playing in Camrose before because everyone was so into the music. People were dancing and singing along, having such a great time. We are looking forward to coming back. We played at the Bailey Theatre and we enjoy those theatre atmospheres.” The band not only sounds like Fleetwood Mac,
they look the part with costumes and mannerisms of the band members. “We do our best to look and sound like the band members and be like them. We perform the way they would perform,” added Crystal. “People can expect us to sound authentic and put on a good show.” Fleetwood Mac was founded by Peter Green in 1967 and was named after Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. After Green left in 1969, Fleetwood and McVie remained as original members and the band has since featured a cast of brilliant talents. Most notably, Christine McVie joined the band in 1970, with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joining in 1974 to replace Bob Welch (soloist), Mike Campbell (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) and Neil Finn (Split Enz). Fleetwood Mac peaked with Grammy award-winning album Rumours in 1976.
Bailey reserved for Girls’ Weekend By Murray Green
Girls in the area are booking a weekend, or a theatre night, at the Bailey Theatre. The Kelsey Drama Society will be presenting Girls’ Weekend, a theatre production, on Oct. 10, 11, 12, 17, 18 and 19. Dinner is at 6:15 p.m. with the show starting at 7:30 p.m. This comedy features four women travelling to a cabin to consume lots of wine, laugh at their lives, trade stories and chat about their book club’s latest selection. Carol, who is monitoring her temperature for the best “window of opportunity” to get pregnant, gets a ride to the cabin from her husband, Rick, who is hoping the “time is right”
for a quick tryst. She sends him home, frustrated, in a snowstorm, only to discover that her temperature shows she IS ready, and calls him to drive back and hide out in a shed until she can sneak him in with a special porchlight signal. Meg, recently widowed, is having a secret affair with Dot’s son, only to find he has shown up at the cabin unexpectedly and wants to further their relationship. Meg sends him to hide in a boathouse until he sees her special porchlight signal and the coast is clear to rejoin her in the cabin. Ellie, the youngest and Meg’s daughter, would rather not be a part of the weekend with her “elders” and meets a young townie,
inviting him to hide out in a barn. When he sees her special porchlight signal, he climbs into her bedroom window and sneaks her out to a local bar after the other ladies retire. The only obstacle to each of the ladies’ secret endeavors is Dot, who wants to stay up all night and party with the girls. So they make sure they ply her with plenty of party favours, and Dot proceeds to pass out. The ladies move Dot’s lifeless body from floor to closet to room, as the bottles tip up, the secrets spill out and the men sneak in. The chaos comes to a head when Dot wakes up and discovers her girls’ weekend is full of men!

Augustana alumnus Lindsay returns for CD release concert Submitted
Not too far from home, Wainwright singer-songwriter and Augustana alumnus Ryan Lindsay is set to bring his country twang to the Lougheed Centre on Oct. 16 at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre at 7 p.m. Already making waves in the country music community, in the past year, Lindsay won a Rising Star competition, performed on the main stage of Country Thunder and made the Top 10 Ballot for ACMA male country artist of the year. At 26 years old, Lindsay’s career represents many accomplishments preceding the launch of his solo music career with his first single “Doin’ Alright” in 2018. “It’s been an amazing journey transitioning from being a student to a wilderness guide to an electrician to choos-
ing music as my full-time job,” said Lindsay. From his time at Augustana to sailing across the Atlantic Ocean to solo hiking in Greenland to canoeing in the Arctic Ocean, and guiding back country trips across Canada, Lindsay is no stranger to the wilderness. In fact, his new album titled Wild represents journeys of all kinds. Whether it’s songs about outdoor-based sentiments, ref lections on relationships, exploring life tribulations, or classic country melodies, Lindsay brings his experiences at Augustana and in the wild into his craft. Much of his new album is inspired by his outdoor education degree and the places he’s been. “The album is very influenced by my love for the outdoors. This place [Augustana] really got me thinking outside the
box and tapping into my creative energies,” said Lindsay. “It’s really exciting to come back and officially release this album here in Camrose and at Augustana specifically.” Along with bringing his foot-tapping rhythm, enthusiastic energy and original songs, Lindsay hopes to connect with students and the Camrose community. “I think it’s really important to interact with the audience and get them excited,” said Lindsay. “It’ll be awesome to return to Camrose and share my songs with such a supportive and wonderful community.” Visit http://camroselive.ca/event/ryan-lindsay for tickets for Lindsay’s album release concert, with special guest appearance from the Augustana choir. Following the concert, there will be a meet and greet with Lindsay.

What’s on your mind?
You know how sometimes you know something has to get done but you have no clue where to start and nothing is occurring to you and you’re stuck, stuck, stuck? I’ve just had that experience. Most weeks I know what I’m going to write about a few days before I submit the column to the Camrose Booster. Before I sit down to write, I have an idea about the general topic. Sometimes it changes while I’m writing, but I have a place to start. Not this week. An hour before deadline, I still had no idea of a topic. For several hours before that, I’d drawn a complete blank. I sat at the keyboard inviting inspiration. It declined my invitation. I paced around. Flipped through my column ideas folder. Typed “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” (which has all the letters of the alphabet) thinking one of those letters might do something useful. Made coffee. Typed gibberish hoping some of it would start to be coherent. Ate a snack…nothing. Then I asked myself, “What might people in East Central Alberta be thinking about on Oct. 1?” The first thing that popped into my mind? Get the crop off. This isn’t the easiest harvest season, after a late spring, wet summer and now wet fall. Farming is both a business and a way of life hugely dependent on factors beyond the farmer’s control. Some factors can be managed or worked around and farmers are brilliant at improvising, but many factors cannot be controlled. You might think “growing our food” is such a compelling job that it would somehow be protected. Nope. I once heard a farmer say something like this: “Weather-wise, it’s unpredictable, but in any 10 years, you can count on maybe two bumper crop years, two crop failure years, and the rest somewhere in between. It’s unpredictable in a specific year, but there’s a range of normal. But government policy? There’s no range of normal for that.” Dairy farmers, canola and grain growers, beef and pork producers would agree. Kids in school. One school in our district is working around a fire-damaged school. But everywhere, the lives of families with children in school are dominated by what’s happening at school. Activities and schedules and whether kids are able to learn and how they’re doing on the playground…It’s all top of mind for parents, while they hold down jobs and try to have a life of their own too. Staying in business. In the olden days, competition was from other local businesses. Not now. Competition is from Google, Amazon and Facebook, not to mention Walmart and the other chain stores. When competition was another local business of a similar scale, you could provide better service or offer a better price. Your good relationships with others in the community helped sustain the business. Not now. People might like you and like what you’re selling, but online is so much easier. And it’s not going away. Our personal dramas. Among people I know there’s the grandma whose two-year-old grandson is having surgery. A friend having a heart transplant. Someone in constant excruciating pain needing a hip replacement whose physical condition cannot likely survive surgery. A caregiving friend whose husband’s dementia is worsening. There’s the young man who’s poured heart and soul and mind and a quarter of a million dollars into a start-up venture. Testing has demonstrated the technology works and can save lives. But. The money’s run out before the technology is fully developed and scalable. Investors aren’t interested until profits are secure. So near and yet so far. State of the world. A changing economy and Amazon jungles burning our planet’s lungs and international turmoil and a federal election are in our faces. But for many of us, or people we care about, not a cell in our brain is available for anything except our personal lives. It’s called, “human.” So–what’s on your mind this October?

Share spare winter clothing with children By Murray Green
The Emergency Clothing and Furniture Depot needs your help to make the Coats for Camrose program a success this fall. This community service program will be held from Oct. 17, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Oct. 18, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Duggan Mall. “We are accepting donations of gently used clean jackets, ski pants, hats, mitts, scarves, sweaters and boots at 491846 Street or in the donation boxes in Duggan Mall,” said Iona Brager, coordinator of Centra Cam’s Emergency Clothing and Furniture Depot. “We are so grateful to the community for all the donated items, which allow us to offer this service back to the communi-
ty. Duggan Mall has been great to work with over the years, providing space for the event at no charge. Our space this year will be a bit smaller, so we ask everyone to be patient and considerate of others as they do their shopping. We are asking that the bags be filled only to the point where they can be closed. The nominal charge of $5 per bag is used to offset costs of staffing, transportation and supplies,” said Iona. “The event is open to all Camrose and area residents. No referral is necessary. Hundreds of items will be available,” she added. Contact the Emergency Clothing and Furniture Depot at 780-608-1681 for more information.

Fire Prevention Week educates public By Lori Larsen
That time of year has rolled around again as emergency fire services, including Camrose Fire Department (CFD), gear up for Fire Prevention Week, held from Oct. 6 to 12. This year’s theme Not Every Hero Wears a Cape – Plan and Practice Your Escape is dedicated to educating residents on the importance of knowing how to prevent fires from occurring and doing what is necessary in the event of a fire incident. Camrose Fire Department will kick off this year’s events with the annual Pancake Breakfast being served at the CFD fire hall, 201 Mount Pleasant Drive, beginning at 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Be sure to get there early as the lines form quickly. Camrose Firefighters Association will be manning the “stations” once again serving up a hot, delicious breakfast while others will be on hand to answer questions, entertain the little ones with tours of the big red shiny trucks and hand out some swag. CFD mascot Captain Camrose will also be wandering around entertaining the crowd. Be sure to check out the side-by-side demonstration structure that will be on hand prior to the live demonstration on Oct. 8 and learn more about the life and property saving benefits of home sprinkler systems. On Tuesday, Oct. 8 CFD will be hosting an Open House and Meet and Greet beginning at 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. At 6:30 p.m. there will be a live Side-by-Side Fire demonstration. This is the first year CFD will be featuring this event and it promises to be very informative and exciting as well. Join the CFD firefighters afterwards
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Camrose Fire Department volunteer firefighters are continually training.
for hotdogs and beverages. This event was made possible through a $500 stipend from the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC) and generous donations by local community businesses. On Wednesday, Oct. 9 get ready to do your “Great Escape.” Beginning at 6 p.m. members of the CFD will be driving around parts of Camrose in the fire trucks, looking for partici-
pating residents. You are encouraged to be outside at your household “in the event of a fire” meeting spot between 6 and 6:30 p.m. so the firefighters can spot you, stop and share information and some prizes. In an effort to build fire safety awareness early, Camrose Fire Department Firefighters Association, in partnership with Wild Rose Co-op, will be handing out free smoke detectors to Grade 4 students within the City of Camrose. The students are encouraged to place the detectors as needed in their homes. Fire Prevention Week is dedicated to reminding residents to stay informed in order to prevent an incident from occurring, but also provides valuable information on what you should do if something does happen. However, the education does not stop there. CFD strives to provide the community with education and keep them abreast on preventing fires and welcomes all residents to ask questions and seek out more information on fire safety and prevention by contacting them at 780-672-2906, or visiting the Fire Prevention Week website at www.firepreventionweek.org.
Fire demo proves sprinklers save lives son, we can show both the danger of fire and the value of having a fire sprinkler system installed.” The City of Camrose Fire Department received a $500 stipend from the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC), a not-for-profit education organization with a mandate to increase awareness of the life-saving benefits of home sprinkler systems, to conduct the home fire sprinkler educational demonstration on Oct. 8. “We are honoured to have been selected for this generous stipend,” said Chief Krich. “Using the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition’s educational materials, we will move forward with this important public education demonstration, which illustrates the danger of home fires, especially in today’s lightweight-construction homes and, more importantly, the lifesaving benefits of home fire sprinklers.” The safe demonstration is intended to show people firsthand how quickly a typical home fire can become deadly in a matter of three minutes or less. Sometimes the best way to get a point across is through demonstration and nothing is more convincing than watching the power of fire and how quickly it can destroy property and lives. On Tuesday, Oct. 8, Camrose Fire Department will be conducting a side-by-side fire demonstration at the CFD Fire Hall for the public, in an effort to help people understand the risks of fire and new home safety technology that can reduce the devastating affects it can have on people’s lives.
“By providing this unique, live fire comparison, people not only gain an appreciation for fire power, they also realize what an incredible advantage it is to have a fire sprinkler system installed in the event of a fire occurring in their home,” said Krich. While smoke alarms are an essential part of fire safety, providing people with a warning of a possible fire situation in their home or business, fire sprinkler systems take safety one level further. “Following an emergency call, it takes the fire department, on average, nine to 12 minutes to arrive on the scene of the fire. By that time, a fire in a home without a sprinkler system will have spread, causing smoke and heat damage, but more vital, threatening the lives of the residents. Local and national fire safety experts say widespread use of home sprinkler systems could save thousands of lives every year. The mechanics of the sprinkler systems are fairly straight forward. The sprinklers are supplied by household water, usually off the water main and, similar to ordinary household plumbing, the sprinkler system piping is hidden behind walls and ceilings. The sprinklers themselves are positioned along the piping and can be seen in ceilings or high along certain walls. The sprinklers will only be activated by the high temperatures of a fire (typically between 135°F and 175°F). It is important to note that burned toast or other smoke cannot set off a sprinkler; neither can a smoke alarm. The sprinklers are designed to flow between 10 to 25 gallons of water per minute, which equates to about 10 to 15 times less water flow than fire department hoses and under a lot less pressure. Sprinklers control or extinguish fires while they are still small, which in turn slows the spread of poisonous smoke and deadly heat. The fast and effective action of a sprinkler system gives people more time to safely escape, saving lives and confining the fire damage so surrounding rooms are protected which can save property and valuables. Sprinkler systems are proving their value over and over again. By taking a few minutes out of your day to watch and learn at the CFD side-by-side demonstration, it may help you decide to install a system in your new home or accommodate one in your existing home which, quite literally, could be one of the most valuable decisions you can make.

Buick Wildcat still purrs down the highway By Murray Green
Merle Stover still enjoys the satisfaction of cruising down the highway in his 1968 Buick Wildcat. “I’m the second owner of the car and I acquired the car 11 years ago. I had been looking for a General Motors vehicle that was a two-door hardtop. I had a 1965 Buick two-door hardtop and then a 1967 two-door hardtop. This is a year newer than that car, but I traded those off rather quickly back in those days. It was the nostalgia of having a vehicle similar to one that I had in the past,” said Merle, who was the superintendant of schools in Camrose before retiring. “When we got married, I had the 1965 Buick, so there are some good memories of those years and the Buicks.” Merle drives his car on special occasions or if the weather is fine. “I don’t drive the car a lot. I like to go to just a few shows a year. We take it for a drive now and then, and sometimes we take friends to drive along with us as well,” shared Merle. “In the 11 years, I don’t think I’ve put more than a couple of thousand miles on it. “I haven’t done anything to it other than regular maintenance. I’m not mechanically inclined, so I

didn’t try and change it. I wanted it to be as original as possible. The gentleman who bought it new at Southpark Motors (Edmonton) put on seat covers and they are still on the seats today. He said to me the car was never left outside at night unless
FUN FACTS
The Buick Wildcat was a full-sized automobile that was produced by Buick from 1962 to 1970. It took its name from a fiberglass-bodied 1953 concept car. A styling appearance cue was adopted from the popular 1963 Buick Riviera, where the beltline arched up over the rear wheels, a modification of an older styling element called the Sweepspear. The year 1967 brought a new engine to the Wildcat line, along with the Riviera and Electra 225, a 430 cubic inch V8 with four-barrel carburetor and 360 hp (268 kW) rating that featured larger valves for better breathing than the previous 401/425 Nailhead design that dated back to Buick’s first V8, in 1953. The 430 engine was relatively short-lived as it was only offered through the 1969 model year. For 1970, the 430 was superseded by the largest Buick V8 engine ever, a 455 cubic inch engine that was basically a bored version of the previous engine with the same large-valve design, a horsepower rating of 370 and torque rating of more than 500 pounds. In 1967 and 1968, the addition of new federally mandated safety equipment that provided better occupant protection in collisions and accident avoidance features as well. Like other full-size cars of the late 1960s, the Buicks became bigger, plusher and less economical.
he was travelling. The car has had the same treatment since I have had the vehicle,” shared Merle. “The vinyl top is original; you don’t see too many that are original and more than 50 years old. I try to keep it inside away from the sun when I’m not driving it.” The car has a 430 cubic inch V8 with four-barrel carburetor with no air conditioning, but it has power seats, windows and no cruise control. “For a Wildcat, it has an odd set of equipment. I’ve had very little motor work done on it, just put in new gaskets to stop any moisture from leaking out,” explained Merle. “The radiator was brittle and cracked, so that was fixed.” The original owner was sad to see it leave. “The older gentleman was on crutches when I bought it and was almost tearful. It was his baby. He didn’t want to part with it, but it was his last days of driving. It was nice to meet him. I still have the warranty card, it looked like a credit card in those days. It still has his name on
it. The car has its original windshield. It was driven mostly in Edmonton and wasn’t out on the highways a lot. It does have a 1970 sticker and a 1972 National Parks sticker on the windshield, so it is the original.” A cassette stereo was installed, but it is under the
dash to keep the interior looking original. The Wildcat also has fender skirts on the rear tires that are original and not added after the sale of the vehicle. “To tell you the truth, they are a pain when it comes to changing a tire.”

Fall Car Care Guide… Routine vehicle checks By Murray Green
Owning a car is a big responsibility. Drivers who plan to keep their vehicles for the long haul must emphasize maintenance if they want to keep adding miles to their odometers. Routine maintenance may be the most important thing drivers can do for their vehicles. A vehicle needs consistent care if it is to run efficiently. Maintenance also reduces the risk of roadside breakdowns and costly repairs. Here’s a look at some of the benefits of staying on top of maintenance. Even though maintenance costs money, sticking to a consistent maintenance schedule can save big bucks in the long run. For example, the cost of rotating and aligning tires is considerably less than repairing a car after a major blowout and paying for a tow and tire replacement. Routine maintenance includes oil changes, filter changes and fluid top-offs. Such tasks keep engines running smoothly. Ignoring this routine maintenance can put engines in jeopardy of breaking down and adversely affect vehicle performance, diminishing fuel economy and leading to a sluggish ride. Inspections and work performed by reputable service stations help drivers stay abreast of recalls or issues that can affect the safety of the vehicle. When the time comes to sell the vehicle, having a log of routine maintenance indicates to potential buyers that the vehicle was well cared for. Vehicles covered under manufacturer’s warranties typically need to be maintained in adherence to factory-recommended maintenance schedules.

Higher octane gas can help your vehicle By Murray Green
Some drivers may know what octane refers to and how it might affect their vehicles. Anyone who has ever driven their vehicles into a filling station is familiar with the word octane. But few drivers may know what octane really means. Octane is a colourless component that boils at high temperatures. Octane is added to fuels, including gasoline used in vehicles, to eliminate pre-ignition in
combustion engines. The higher the octane rating, which is a measure of a fuel’s ability to resist knocking or pinging, the less likely the fuel is going to explode unexpectedly. Gasoline with a high octane rating can withstand more compression than gas with a low octane rating. Drivers can choose between 87, 89 or 93 octane gasoline. Most gasoline vehicles are designed to run on 87 octane gasoline. However, some vehicles are still
designed to run on higher octane fuel, so drivers should always consult their owners’ manuals to determine which octane is best for their vehicles. Using a lower octane fuel than the one mentioned by the vehicle manufacturer can damage the engine over time. Using a fuel with an octane rating other than the one recommended by the vehicle manufacturer may actually void the warranty. That gives drivers even greater incentive to
consult their owner’s manuals before filling up for the first time. Drivers may wonder if using a higher octane fuel than the one recommended by their car’s manufacturer will improve performance. In certain instances, it might. Higher octane fuel may improve performance and gas mileage and reduce carbon emissions when towing or carrying heavy loads. However, there’s typically no such benefit when driving in normal conditions.
Many drivers have found themselves stranded on the side of the road at one point or another. Whether the culprit is engine trouble, a flat tire or another issue, finding oneself stranded on the side of the road in need of assistance is an often helpless feeling that no one wants to experience twice. Even drivers whose automotive clubs or insurance companies provide roadside assistance services, want to avoid using such services. One way to do just that is to learn about potential indicators of engine trouble. Vehicle warning lights exist for a reason. A check engine light typically illuminates when vehicle sensors detect there are issues stemming from a loss of power. This can be dangerous and drivers should pull over and call for a tow the moment the light comes on. In addition to check engine lights, drivers should heed warning lights referring to oil pressure and oil levels. An easy way for drivers to monitor vehicle performance is to keep gas mileage in mind. If a vehicle suddenly feels like it’s not getting as much mileage out of a tank of gas as it used to, this might be indicative of engine troubles. A fuel additive such as a fuel injector cleaner might be helpful because it can clean clogged fuel injectors that can affect performance and lead to poor acceleration. Products are not a one-sizefits-all cure. If vehicles continue to suffer from reduced gas mileage, drivers should bring them to a mechanic for a thorough examination. Some signs of engine trouble are not as subtle as reduced gas mileage. Vehicles that begin to jerk while they’re being driven are likely suffering from some form of engine trouble. Jerking might put a scare in drivers, but it’s not necessarily the result of a major problem, even if it is one that should be addressed immediately. A jerking vehicle that stalls puts drivers, their passengers and other motorists at risk of accident, so bring this issue to the attention of your mechanic immediately. Poorly functioning spark plugs may be the culprit behind jerking, and that’s a relatively inexpensive and quick fix. However, other issues can cause jerking as well, so don’t delay in speaking with your mechanic.

Follow standard vehicle maintenance guides By Murray Green
Drivers are urged to familiarize themselves with maintenance, which can protect vehicles as well as the people inside them. No two automobiles are the same. So it makes sense that vehicles have different maintenance guidelines. Such guidelines, which include recommendations regarding how frequently oil should be changed and how often tires should be rotated, are typically included in vehicle owner’s manuals. Many manufacturers adhere to the 30-60-90 schedule. That schedule recommends everything from inspections to part replacements when vehicles reach 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000 miles. A lot of vehicles are made outside of Canada, so it may be recorded as miles instead of kilometres. These recommendations are meant to serve as guidelines. Drivers should know that certain factors can affect how often routine maintenance should occur and when parts must be replaced. For example, harsh driving conditions can lead to excessive wear and tear that causes parts to erode long before owner’s manuals suggest they should. Motorists should always speak with their mechanic during service appointments to determine if their vehicles are aging gracefully or if they need a little extra care. Drivers should always read their manuals for rec-
ommended service intervals. Many new cars run on synthetic oil, which tends to last between 5,000 and 10,000 miles. Older vehicles using traditional oil may need to adhere to the once-standard oil change interval of 3,000 miles. Mechanics will typically replace oil filters with the same frequency as they replace oil. Air filters generally need to be replaced every 15,000 to 30,000 miles. Drivers who park in dusty environments should err on the side of caution and have the vehicle’s air filters replaced every 15,000 miles. Clogged fuel filters can affect engine performance and even prevent engines from running. Fuel filters may need to be changed at 30,000-mile intervals. A typical car battery tends to last around four or five years. Worn out brake pads will make a screeching sound. Brake pads should last around 50,000 miles, though they should be inspected at regular intervals regardless of mileage. Brake rotors can be resurfaced or replaced and this should be done around 60,000 miles. Resurfacing can only be done once and is less expensive than a full replacement. Hoses crack over time, but generally do not need to be replaced until they reach the 90,000-mile mark. However, hoses should be inspected routinely, as busted hoses can cause very significant damage.

Justice minister talks rural crime By Murray Green
Alberta Minister of Justice Doug Schweitzer has expanded his Talking Rural Crime tour to include more town hall meetings and an online survey. The minister, who has been travelling around the province since Sept. 5 to hear people’s concerns about rural crime, continues to meet with residents, business owners, rural crime watch groups and officials. To meet popular demand, minister Sch-
weitzer has extended his Talking Rural Crime tour for another month. Albertans can also provide their feedback in an online survey. “I am thankful for everyone who has participated in our town halls and meetings. Your input is essential in helping our government create safer and more secure communities. While we are adding more opportunities across the province, we understand it will not be possible for everyone to participate in person. I encourage
those who are unable to attend to complete the survey so your voice is heard,” said Doug Schweitzer, Alberta Minister of Justice and Solicitor General. The online survey is available at alberta.ca/ rural-crime until Oct. 31. It covers issues such as community safety and policing, and crime-reduction matters. He added a tour stop in Camrose on Wednesday, Oct. 9. The location will be at the Norsemen Inn, 6505-48 Ave, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Florence Gladys Shervin May 16, 1917 ~ September 20, 2019 Florence Gladys Johnson, the youngest of eleven children, was born on May 16, 1917 at Ashby, Minnesota to John Johnson and Tilda Anderson. Florence was predeceased by her parents John and Tilda; husband Gilbert Shervin; and siblings Charlie, Albert, Oliver, Katie, Edward, Lewis, Margaret, Inez, Theodore and Melvin. Florence is a special friend and great-aunt to many, and a sixth-generation great-aunt to the Roy Johnson family. Florence attended school in Melby and Garfield, Minnesota. On October 15, 1935, at the age of eighteen, Florence was married to Gilbert Shervin. They celebrated forty-three years of marriage. Gilbert passed away in October 1978. The following excerpts are written by Florence and are published in the Johnson-Almstrong Family History Book and The Camrose Booster. “In 1931, I came to Ardmore, Alberta with my two brothers, Ted and Melvin. My Dad had taken a homestead. It was the first time I had seen and known my brother Albert. He had gone to Canada about ten years before I was born. There was only a wagon trail for roads and thick bush. Sometimes the coyotes seemed to be right outside of the house when they howled. Gilbert and I were married in 1935 and, in 1939, Gilbert took over his mother’s farm, which was near Camrose, Alberta. I liked to work outside, so I learned to drive the tractor, combine and other things. There were no cabs or push buttons then. Sometimes it would get pretty cold in the winter, or in the summer, it could be pretty dirty. I liked everything about farming. I used to talk to the cattle, and they seemed to talk back to me. During calving season, we would have to teach the little calves how to drink. In 1972, we sold the farm and moved to an apartment in Camrose. We did caretaking and I continued for a few years after Gilbert passed away. I liked to be outside, so I looked after the yard like a caretaker. I took care of the halls inside and did the mowing and what have you outside.” Several years after Gilbert’s passing, Florence moved into the Stoney Creek Lodge in Camrose. From there, she spent a few months in Bashaw and then moved into the Rosealta Lodge in Camrose where she resided until her passing. Florence was an active participant in the daily lodge life and enjoyed the many friends she made over the years. Florence celebrated her 100th birthday on May 16, 2017. Her wit was sharp and her smile was youthful. When asked what her secret to a long, happy life was, her answer was spot on. “I haven’t really tried. I just keep going and just enjoy. That’s about it.” And her final piece of wisdom: “Just do what you can do!” A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 26, 2019 from Burgar Memorial Chapel, 4817-51 Avenue, Camrose. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Florence’s memory may be made to St. Mary’s Hospital - Unit 2 Palliative Care, Parkland Cemetery or to the Ardmore Duclos Memorial Cemetery. We would like to express our sincere thanks for the kindness shown to us during Florence Shervin’s passing to Dr. Botha, Dr. Chapman and the nursing staff on Unit 2 at St. Mary’s Hospital. Special thanks to Derek Robertson of Burgar Funeral Home, Rev. Calvin Skriver, the Home Care Group, Rosealta Lodge staff and residents for their kindness and help given to Florence and for the lovely lunch served by A-1 Catering. Also thank you to everyone for being there to celebrate Florence’s journey of life. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Faith Vanessa Weiler Faith was born a happy bundle of sunshine on the 29th of March, 1971. She had an infectious smile and a knack for getting away with more than her older siblings. She spent her formative years in the wilderness of Sherwood Park. Her father was a stronger influence than we knew with Faith’s love of James Dean and the ’68 Fastback Mustang. She had a fondness for animals manifested by Daisy the dog and her career in equestrianism (her love of horses would eventually lead to a bigger love in her life). At age 12, a day of sailing would be the start of her career in adventure sports. After a year at Concordia College, Faith would complete her nursing training at the Misericordia School of Nursing at age 22. She would spy her long-legged life partner at the tender age of 21 at the Cook County in a gray cowboy hat. The deal was sealed after some mean two-stepping. Faith and Shane were joyously married on the 26th of August, 1995 at All Saints Cathedral in Edmonton (was there a horse in the wedding party?), followed by a grand family gathering. Faith would shortly start her career in obstetrics in Wetaskiwin. She loved her profession of bringing new life into the world. She developed a strong and lasting bond with many of her colleagues. A trip to Cambodia to teach in rural health clinics was a highlight of her career. Faith and Shane began their wonderfully tall family with the arrival of Sarah (1 August 1997), followed by Eric (9 January 1999) and Jacob (1 October 2003). Faith’s adventurous side was nurtured by Shane and their many travels. Faith and Shane tried skydiving early on, so everything else in life would seem like a piece of cake. Skiing, scuba diving, deep sea fishing, hiking in the dark, climbing pyramids, driving a minivan far too long and crashing sail boats is only a small sampling. Seeing the world with Shane and the kids was a huge part of Faith’s life. Trips to Oregon, Mexico, Bonair, Hawaii and many, many more places would revolve around close life experiences for the whole family. Faith was diagnosed with cancer in 2009. She never allowed this to define her. Her strength and character blossomed in the face of adversity, touching all who knew Faith. She passed away on her own terms on the 24th of September, 2019, in the presence of her loving family in a way that will change us all forever. She lives on in the beauty of her three wonderful children and the memories in our hearts. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Shane; children Sarah Weiler of Camrose, Eric of Lethbridge, and Jacob of Camrose; parents Brian and Mary Caunt; siblings Mary Jo (Bill) Mulgrew of Kelowna, BC, and Calvin (Pauline) Caunt of North Carolina; parents-in-law Jim and Irene Weiler of Duncan, BC; brother-in-law Mike Weiler (Coralie Bleyaert) of Mills Bay, BC; and sister-in-law Jessica (Rick) Lemke of Duncan, BC. A Funeral Service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 27, 2019 from the CityLights Church, Camrose with Rev. Clayton Milgate officiating. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Faith’s memory may be made to STARS. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
HOSPICE SOCIETY OF CAMROSE AND DISTRICT Annual General Meeting will be held Wednesday, October 16 at 7 p.m. in the Rosehaven Care Centre Auditorium, 4612-53 Street Everyone interested in hospice/palliative care is welcome to attend. Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Dragons burn Kodiaks By Murray Green
Camrose Kodiaks were burned 6-5 by the Drumheller Dragons, on Sept. 24. Drumheller scored the only tally in the first period before both teams turned up the heat on offence. Camrose netted four goals in the second and the Dragons added three to even the game at 4-4 after the middle frame. It was offence from the defence that sparked the Kodiaks. Defencemen Lane Brockhoff, Robert Kincaid and Brennan Davis started the rally with goals. Greyson Stewart tied the game late in the period. Camrose jumped into the lead with a Damon Zimmer marker, but Drumheller scored two minutes later on a power play. The winning goal was scored about mid-way through the final period. Both teams were one for four on the power play. Goalie Griffin Bowerman made 42 saves on 48 shots in the loss. The Kodiaks exploded for seven goals to defeat the Olds Grizzlys 7-4 on Sept. 22. After Olds netted the first goal in the opening period, Camrose bounced back with three in the middle frame and another three in the third to grab the win. Jerret Tommerman, Jacob Kendall and Griffin Fraser got the Kodiaks back on track in the second period. Then in the third, Kendall with his second, Lane Brockhoff and Carson Welke added to the Camrose lead. Olds stormed back with three tallies of their own before Cam McAdam finished the scoring for the Kodiaks. Goalie Griffin Bowerman stopped 29 of 33 shots he faced. In the Olds net, former Camrose Minor Hockey netminder Ty Marcinkowski turned away 39 of 45 shots directed his way. The Kodiaks lost a tough 4-3 game to Okotoks on Sept. 20. Cody Laskosky opened the scoring for the Kodiaks, but the Oilers evened the score later in the first period. Brockhoff gave the Kodiaks a brief lead again until the Oilers rallied for two tallies before the frame was over. In the third, Laskosky netted the tying marker, only to have Okotoks net the winner mid-way through the third. Goalie Cole Tisdale stopped 28 of 32 shots, while Camrose fired 30 shots at the Okotoks’ net. Camrose plays three straight home games in the Encana Arena beginning at 7 p.m. On Oct. 11, the Lloydminster Bobcats provide the opposition, Okotoks are here on Oct. 12 and Brooks is back on Oct. 19.
