It’s National Co-op Week
You’re at home here.
orn out of hardship and community, the cooperative movement slowly grew from its austere beginnings in 1840s England and found its way to the windswept prairies of Western Canada where the idea of a co-op was embraced by folks in communities like Killam, Sedgewick, and Viking in the early 1900s. Today, Wild Rose Co-op is an integral part of the fabric of the trading area it serves with food stores, gas bars, cardlock fuel outlets, fuel delivery, agricultural inputs and equipment, lubricants and oils. It has grown substantially over the past decade, especially in its fuel and agriculture business, and has given back to its members more than $10 million in profit sharing over the last five years. Try to name another business that has given back more than $10 million to the community in the past five years. The large multi-national companies certainly cannot make the same claim. The idea behind a cooperative is simple.
Memberships are sold to join a cooperative. In the case of Wild Rose Co-op the cost is $1 to be a member. Then, at the end of the year, the profits are split between the members based on how much they spent with the co-op over the course of the year. It’s ingenious. It’s a grassroots organization that is driven from the bottom up, rather than from the top down, which is the way most big businesses operate. The members are the owners of a co-op, not the stock holders. This sense of membership and community is at the core of what it means to be a cooperative. “It’s about people and community, which is what keeps it all going,” says Carol Rollheiser, general manager of Wild Rose Co-op. “It’s about value and service and sharing in the profits.”
It’s also about creating jobs in this region with more than 200 Wild Rose Co-op employees located from Camrose to Hardisty and all points in between. They’re all working to help make their communities better. A new initiative this year is called “Spread a Little Love this Christmas” and it’s designed to provide a Christmas gift to over 400 seniors in the trading area this holiday season. Watch for it coming on Nov. 1 to the Wild Rose Food Stores in Camrose, Killam and Sedgewick as well as both Gas Bars and the Farm and Home Centre in Sedgewick. Another way the Co-op strives to keep its focus local is by supporting products made here. For example, most of the pickles sold in grocery stores come from India or the United States, yet producers on the prairies are perfectly capable of growing high quality pickling cucumbers. Why not pickle those cucumbers right here and sell them through co-op food stores? Look for them soon under the Co-op Pure banner.
fertilizer, fuel, oil and other crop inputs. The canola then gets refined and bottled and delivered to grocery stores where it will be sold. The ingenious part of the formula is that a portion of every dollar spent will come back to the farm family, not only the amount invested in seeding, harvesting and selling the crop, but also in purchasing the canola oil from their local Co-op food store. It’s National Co-op Week Oct. 13 to 19 and a wonderful opportunity for Co-op members to reflect on the values instilled into the philosophy of supporting and nurturing the community. You are encouraged to shop, fuel up or visit a Wild Rose Co-op location during National Co-op Week.
“We are truly farm to fork,” says Carol. Another example of the co-op’s grassroots at work is in agriculture. Farmers can buy their canola seed from the co-op, their

Candidates discuss issues By Murray Green
Camrose and area voters in the upcoming federal election had the opportunity to get to know and ask questions to candidates on Oct. 8 in the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. In the Battle RiverCrowfoot riding, Damien C. Kurek of Camrose of the Conservative Party, Geordie Nelson of the Green Party and David Michaud of the People’s Party spoke about the issues prior to the Oct. 21 election. Environment
A question was asked on clean drinking water and the disconnect between the federal and provincial governments on the issue. “It is important that we have strong collaboration between the provinces and the federal government. That’s why the Conservatives promised to ensure that we cut red tape so we collaborate with the regulations so there is not a huge disconnect. I’ve talked to CEO’s of small towns that have printed off a foot thick of regulations that they are trying to sift through on how to deal with wastewater, grey water. The City of Camrose, because it surpassed the 20,000 population mark, it falls under a new set of regulation that cost taxpayers significantly. We need a reduction on regulations and an investment in infrastructure,” said Kurek. “I can’t improve on that, that is exactly what we need,” said Michaud. “Per capita, unfortunately, we are one of the most wasteful countries in terms of the amount of the garbage we produce and the water we use. Being able to implement grey water is extremely important and we need to discuss the disconnect between the federal and provincial governments. We need to streamline the regulations, so we are helping the smaller municipalities,” said Nelson. Economy
A question was asked about the appointed minister of rural economic development. “I’m sad to say, currently we have no policy for that, sorry,” said Michaud. “We have a plan for assisting agriculture, so shifting towards regenerative agriculture and assisted producers and farmers with what they need. For example, for young farmers it is very difficult to get into farming unless you inherit or marry into a farm. Also, helping young farmers to gain access to land and access to training that they need.” Continued on page 15
What if politicians told the truth?
Six days to the federal election. I know I’m not the only one who’s finding this a dis-spiriting campaign. According to media reports, major parties are spending more money to discredit other parties than to convince us they’re the best people to govern our country. “We’re not as awful as the other guys” does not make my heart sing. However, as I voted in the advance poll a few days ago, that actually was the basis of my choice: who appears to be the least awful option? The Dilemma
That takes me to something I don’t know how to solve. The things you have to be good at to get elected (win votes) are not the things you have to be good at to do the job (solve national problems). What if a Canadian politician told the truth? For example… Economy
The basis of the global economy is changing forever. We’re in the midst of as big a transition as from the agricultural age to the industrial age. We face as much or more disruption for millions of us hard-working people whose livelihoods are being forever changed or wiped out because of forces over which we have no control. The harsh truth is, we don’t know yet how enough of us can make the transitions required to thrive in the new global economy. Environment
Somewhere between 350,000 and 500,000 people took part in a Montreal climate change march. I know some people who participated at considerable inconvenience and even some loss of income. They’re not even passionate environmentalists. They’re ordinary. The population of greater Montreal is about four million. That means somewhere between one-eleventh and one-eighth of people in Canada’s second largest metropolitan area care enough about climate change to roust themselves out to a march. You can agree or disagree with climate change, but when that big a percentage of Canada’s second largest metropolitan area makes that big an effort, you can bet that “I love oil and gas” t-shirts won’t change their opinion. To do that, we’d have to be able to tell them–in a way they believe–how oil and gas can solve climate change. If you don’t believe climate change and environmental destruction are serious issues, even if you’re right, you’re on the wrong side of shifting public opinion. If you do believe climate change and environmental destruction are serious global issues, plans to “set targets and figure out how later” are not reassuring. Whether we believe scientists’ predictions or acknowledge increasing public opinion, it’s in our best interest to reduce and then stop environmental damage. The harsh truth is, so far we don’t know how to make it happen on a big enough scale fast enough. We do know it will probably require us to do things we’d rather not and it’s going to cost money. Foreign Affairs
However, much we are deservedly proud of Canadian achievements, our nation does not have much clout in the global scheme of things. We cannot control nor even much influence the actions of other nations (U.S. and China come to mind), even when their actions cause us damage. Our blustery or placating or convincing words and actions are just spitting in the wind. Other nations will do what they perceive to be in their best interest. Our Canadian well-being is not one of their considerations. Our foreign policy actions need to accommodate that harsh truth. Would you vote for any of that? To win elections, politicians say things we want to hear. Too bad that doesn’t help them or us know how to solve our harsh problems. To solve our harsh problems is going to require us to work together in ways we never have before. Trashing the opposition is not the best prelude to make that possible. Politicians say what we want to hear and we vote for them. We actually do get the government we ask for. ***

Kingman mini-market By Lori Larsen
Learning the ins and outs of how to conduct a business are skills that can take children many places in their lives. With a goal to provide children with a valuable learning experience and a venue to sell their own products, Faye Asp of Kingman has spearheaded the Kingman Mini-Market, which will be held on Oct. 19 at the Kingman Hall beginning at 9 a.m. This year marks the fourth annual mini-market which is held in conjunction with the Kingman annual Pancake Breakfast fundraiser. The idea began as a result of Faye witnessing her own grandchildren participating in a market in Camrose. “I noticed how engaged my grandson was (who began at the age of 12). He was so professional and friendly, chatting up people,” said Faye. “I wondered if children knew their hobbies could be marketable and could earn them income outside of school.” Having had experience in direct sales and with markets, Faye spurred the idea of a mini-market in Kingman, soliciting parents she knew to encourage their children to get involved. With parents’ permission, the children are solely responsible for research and development of the products. They are encouraged to cost out the materials and make sure they get the best quality they
can afford to produce the product. One month prior to the event, the group holds a business meeting and training session to provide the young participant vendors with information and tips on how to run a successful market. “We get together with the children at the hall, pull out a table (similar to what they will use for the actual market) and have a training meeting.” Each vendor brings one of the products they will be featuring at the market, along with a description of the product which they will speak about, that includes the material used, how the product was made, why they chose that product and the features and benefits. In hearing each others’ product summaries, the vendors are then encouraged to work as a team to promote each other during the market in an effort to teach them collaboration in satisfying customers’ needs. The children are also trained on the importance of eye contact with people, showing interest in their product, setting up prior to customer arrival and other useful tips on how to run a successful business. Four veteran vendors attend the training meeting providing valuable information to the vendors from their own previous experiences on product presentation and customer relations. Continued on page 30

Kodiaks split two road games
Blow Out Sale
By Murray Green
The Camrose Kodiaks defeated the Calgary Canucks 5-2 with sniper Jarret Timmerman leading the way with two goals, on Oct. 5. Timmerman scored the only tally in the opening period. Both teams exchanged a pair of tallies in the middle frame with Wyatt Allan and Timmerman netting the Kodiaks markers. Camrose scored early and late in the third period to skate away with the two points. Cody Laskosky and Erik Miller added the insurance markers. Goalie Griffin Bowerman stopped 34 of 36 shots he faced in Calgary. Camrose fired 40 shots at the Canucks’ net. The Brooks Bandits received the toughest test of its season when they hosted the Kodiaks on Oct. 4. Brooks scored a goal in each of the first two periods as Camrose battled to keep the game close. The Kodiaks pushed back in the third period by scoring two goals within 23 seconds. Lane Brockhoff connected on the power play and then Erik Boers tied the game. It wasn’t until just over two minutes left on the clock that the Bandits stole the game with a tally. The last goal was an empty-netter. Bowerman Goalie turned away 29 of 32 shots directed his way and was the star of the game. Camrose gets another crack at Brooks on Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Encana Arena. Other home games for Camrose are against Grande Prairie on Oct. 25 and the Canucks on Oct. 29 at 1 p.m.

Rankin to share songs from his home area By Murray Green
Jimmy Rankin will be sharing music from Route 19, the highway that runs through his hometown on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Getting back to his roots and storytelling is something he is excited about. “I’m excited about sharing the songs and stories from people I know and stories I’ve heard about,” said Jimmy, who feels like he is coming home with his latest release. Jimmy will be playing at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts
Jimmy Rankin
Centre on Sunday, Oct. 20, starting at 7:30 p.m. “I’ve played in Camrose as part of my family band and as a solo artist,” said Jimmy. “We started with Celtic, pop, country and, with my solo career, I’ve done some Americana rootsstyle albums. Now the latest one is east coast folk-rock, so I’ve dabbled in different styles over the years. I’m a fan of music.” He is a renowned Canadian songwriter with a long string of hits for The Rankin Family and from his solo albums. “The album
ends with a song featuring the fiddle music of Ashley MacIsaac, so that’s pretty much as east coast music as you get.” As a solo artist, he’s been ruling the charts since his 2001 debut Song Dog, with such hits as “Followed Her Around”, “Morning Bound Train” and “Cool Car”. He has collected five Juno Awards, seven Canadian Country Music Awards and a whopping 27 East Coast Music Awards. “I’m super excited to bring my Songs from Route 19 tour to the west. I’ll be singing songs from my latest release, Moving East, and a bunch of other tunes inspired by Route 19, the road that runs right through my hometown Mabou and all along the western side of Cape Breton. So it’s a mix of new and old. I’m proud of my roots and have always shared my music across Canada.” Jimmy’s new Moving East is pure east coast, a homecoming album featuring true stories, tall tales, bittersweet ballads and the classic folk-rock sound that he helped pioneer. It is Jimmy’s first album in four years and he’s been saving songs to make this one special. He’s assembled an allstar team of east coast talent with Joel Plaskett, J.P. Cormier, MacIsaac and pianist Hilda Chiasson. It’s an album full of classic Cape Breton storytelling, unashamedly celebrating his moving back and making the music he loves.

Engaging in Jesus’s Healing Ministry for Today
See us for details!
It’s the Halloween season – a time for little kids to dress up (older ones too) and get some candy! It’s just a day to have some harmless fun. There is another side to consider… Have anxiety/depression the doctors can’t help with? Hearing voices? Past traumatic events you can’t shake? Unrealistic fears? Always accident prone? Can’t seem to break that addiction? Haunted houses real? Do some places in your home or work just creep you out? Your child or pet stares at nothing? Things disappear and then re-appear? What’s with all the ghost/hauntings, witchcraft and satanic TV shows? Harry Potter? Lucifer? Are kids dabbling in witchcraft with all this media attention? Are ghosts real? Did FOX News really report to the U.S. government that UFOs are real? What are they? Since God is real, why is there so much evil in society? Eg: mass shootings, ISIS, continual war. What happened to common sense? Is there really a satan and a host of demons running the show? One World Order? Where is the Christian Church in all of this? Seems awfully quiet. What happened? There is a good set of morals to follow from the church in the past. Their influence is weak now. Is healing and deliverance (Exorcism) real? Can Christians pray in the name of Jesus and can people be healed and delivered from evil forces? Or, are those TV evangelists just scam artists. They seem to be always asking for money. The Bible, just a bunch of guys writing long-past stories, or is it the True Word of God? How does Jesus fit into this? It says in the bible that Jesus’s followers were to carry forth doing his work preaching, teaching, healing and deliverance. Hmmm… something missing. The near perfect crime.

The automotive section of
Johannessen stylin’ in his 1973 Nova By Murray Green
Glen Johannesson of Galahad is a proud owner a 1973 Chevrolet Nova. “I bought this car off a guy about six years ago. I had been searching for a 1973 Nova because it was the first year of the nonvent windows.” The Chevrolet Chevy II/Nova was an automobile manufactured by Chevrolet and produced in five generations for the 1962 through 1979, and 1985 through 1988 model years. He was looking for a smoother style of Nova, rather than a powerful muscle machine. “It has a Chevy small block 283 engine in it that has been stroked. I didn’t want the same style as the 1970 to ’72 Nova’s. I actually like this body style better.” Surprising that he chose style over speed considering that Glen is no stranger to the race track. Glen spent a lot of time at the track racing his cars in the past. “I’ve always been into racing since I was a kid. I used to race at the track in the north end of Edmonton.” This edition is his keeper and with the smaller engine, it can travel to car shows without breaking the bank at the gas stations. “All I have really

done on the Nova is put the scoop on it, a differential lock and then just drive it,” said Glen. The Chevy II nameplate was dropped, Nova becoming the nameplate for the 1969 through 1979 models. “I had a little acci-
FUN FACTS
In 1973, a revised rear suspension was adapted from the second generation Camaro with multi-leaf springs replacing the mono-leaf springs used on Novas since the original 1962 model. By this time, six-cylinder and V8 engines were regular for compact cars, with the 307 cubic inch (5.03 L) and 350 cubic inch (5.7 L) V8s becoming fairly common. The 1973 Nova with a six-cylinder engine or 307 cu. in.(5.0 L) V8 were among the last Chevrolets to be offered with the two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission, which was in its final year. A dressy Custom series joined the Nova line and a Custom hatchback listed for $2,701 with a six-cylinder engine. That was $173 more than the six-cylinder basemodel two-door hatchback. Air conditioning added $381. Every 1973 Chevrolet Nova got side guard door beams and additional sound insulation, as well as flow-through ventilation systems. A sunroof could be installed and fold-down rear seats were available. Model years 1968-74 GM X-bodies positioned the steering linkage behind the steering gear (rear steer—also shared with the 1967-69 F platform). The 1973 six-cylinder Ventura (Nova’s twin) was the last Pontiac model to offer the two-speed automatic, a badge-engineered Chevrolet Powerglide.
dent, so that’s when I added the scoop. My fuel pressure was too high and it broke the line and caught on fire. Before I could get it out, it burnt the top of the hood. Until I can get a replacement hood, I’m covering it up with the scoop,” he explained. The 1973 model year introduced a hatchback body style based on the two-door coupe. The front and rear of the Nova were restyled, following a government mandate for vehicles to be fitted with front and rear bumpers capable of absorbing a low-speed impact of 2.5 mph (four km/h). To go along with the bigger bumpers, stylists gave the Nova a new grille with a loosely patterned crosshatch insert and parking lights located inboard of the headlights. By 1974, they could absorb five mph impacts. Fuel tank capacity increased to 21 gallons, which required a redesigned trunk pan where a circular section was stamped to house the
space saver spare tire used on hatchback models. An SS option remained available, but it was merely a $123 dress-up package that included a blackout grille and rally wheels. It could be ordered with any of the Nova engines.
About 35,542 SS packages were installed, making 1973 the best-selling year for the option. A modified rear side window shape was also introduced, eliminating the vent windows on both two- and four-door models.

Hunting myths and facts By Lori Larsen
Before you head out on that hunt, it’s vital to remember that hunting and land use laws, and regulations are in place to ensure the stability and maintenance of our natural resources for years to come. Camrose Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Branch District Officer Lorne Rinkel clarifies some common hunting myths with facts. 1. Anyone between the ages of 10 and 17 can hunt with a firearm, without being accompanied by an adult. “That is a myth. If you are under 18 years of age and are not accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or by a person 18 years of age or older who has the written permission of the parent or legal guardian, you are not allowed to hunt with a firearm. Hunters between 16 and 18 years old may hunt with a weapon other than a firearm (bow and arrow) without supervision from a parent, guardian or person over 18 years old,” explained Rinkel. “Hunters between the ages of 10 and 12 can
only hunt bird game, while accompanied by an adult.” 2. A firearm can be discharged near a building as long as there is no one home at the time the firearm is discharged. “This is a dangerous myth,” said Rinkel. “The regulations state that it is unlawful to discharge a weapon within 183 m (200 yards) or cause a projectile from a weapon to pass within 183 m (200 yards) of any occupied building unless you are the lawful owner or occupant of those buildings. By occupied, the regulations refer to buildings that would normally be occupied by people even if they are not home at the time the firearm is discharged.” 3. It is unlawful to have a loaded firearm (live ammunition in breech, chamber or magazine) in or on a motor vehicle or an aircraft whether it is moving or stationary. This includes discharging the firearm while leaning on that vehicle, such as over the hood or from a door. The exception is for a hunter using a boat that is at anchor or which is pro-
pelled solely by muscular power. “This is a fact. It is not only unlawful to have a loaded firearm in or on a vehicle, but extremely dangerous,” noted Rinkel, adding that ammunition may be carried in a vehicle in a magazine that is not attached to the firearm. 4. When seeking permission to hunt on private land, guides and outfitters do not need to indicate to landowners or persons designated by landowners, that they are a guide/outfitter and will be guiding clients while on the land. “This is a myth. Guides and outfitters must tell landowners or persons designated by landowner that they are guides/outfitters and that they will be bringing others (clients) onto the land with them.” 5. A hunter that holds a residence outside of Alberta, but is living and working in Alberta, can obtain an Alberta Resident hunter’s license. “This is a myth. A person holding a resident hunting license in any province other than Alberta cannot also obtain a resident hunting license in Alberta. This

commonly abused loophole was changed for the 2019-20 hunting seasons in Alberta.” 6. Once a harvested big game animal arrives at the hunter’s camp or residence, the evidence of sex, species and the tag can be removed. “This is a myth. The evidence of sex, species and tag cannot be removed, even when located at the hunter’s primary residence, until the time and place at which that animal is actually processed. Do not bring untagged animals, or animals missing evidence of sex and species,
to a processing facility as they cannot lawfully accept such. Any transportation of wildlife by its owner must be accompanied by the appropriate licenses and tags, and for any other person, a completed bill of lading must accompany the carrier.” If you suspect any poaching or serious public or private land abuse, contact the Report A Poacher telephone line at 1-800642-3800 or visit alberta. ca/report-poacher. Both the telephone line and web page can be used for emergencies involving wildlife.

MG3 joins CGT for six guitars on stage By Murray Green
Montréal Guitar Trio (MG3) and California Guitar Trio (CGT) have linked their passion and talent in order to create a great evening of six guitars joining on stage. Beautiful music will be made on Monday, Oct. 21, beginning at 7:30 p.m. “In our 20 years, we have been touring the west more than the east,” guitarist Marc Morin laughed. “It’s the fun joke about it. Some people say they have never heard of us and that
is because of the music we do.” MG3 has quickly established itself as an interactive force in various musical forms. For over 20 years, the trio’s virtuosity, rigour, creativity and impressive stage presence have been winning over audiences around the world. The trio, composed of guitarists Sébastien Dufour, Glenn Lévesque and Marc Morin, has given hundreds of concerts in some of the most prestigious venues. “The challenge from
the very beginning was to keep the music fresh with three guitars, three times the same instrument. Soon we started orchestrating the music. We learned to use the instrument to play bass and blending the guitars together,” said Marc. “We can play everything from hard rock to jazz. That is the main reason we keep it fresh for us and the audience, is that we cover a lot of different music and not just classical.” Continued on page 30

Sherwood returns to Lougheed Centre By Murray Green
If you were lucky enough to attend the Luke McMaster show last season in the cabaret series, you may remember his talented sidekick Ian Sherwood. Well, he is returning to the cabaret series with his own show on Oct. 18, beginning at 8 p.m. Instead of promoting his fifth studio album Bring The Light produced by Daniel Ledwell, he is going to give Camrose a preview of his next album that will be released in 2020. “Last winter, I toured with Luke McMaster to back him up and this time I will be bringing my own version of east coast music. Luke and I share the same agent, so that is how we got together and I enjoyed the show in Camrose and wanted to come back,” said Ian. “Actually, talks were in the works before Luke came out, but I was committed to help him out. That show sealed the deal for me to return to Camrose. “I’ve been coming to Alberta a lot, but in the past, it has mostly been to Calgary or Edmonton. This tour allows me to visit places out west where I am not as well known. It is a good opportunity to find some new fans. I’m really excited about that.” The folk music-storyteller plays the guitar and saxophone, backed by his strong songwriting skills and his voice that won him a 2013 Canadian Folk Music Award for Contemporary Singer. “I’m going to crack open some brand new songs at the concert and it will be the first time people will hear them. When I first started out, I was a very folky singersongwriter. I came from a jazz background because I was a saxophone player. I also love the sound of bare bones acoustic guitar, so I added some saxophone and really went at it as a solo performer,” explained Ian. “I still love those elements. I’m also a producer, so I know what works. I’m dancing around the word pop. I’ve added an element of pop and rock to my music. I think music has changed a lot too, not just me. Over the last 10 years, the music has more of a pop swing to it.”

He Brings The Light to every stage he stands on. A born storyteller and a constant creator, his music dances the line between folk and pop. His live performances thrive on intimacy. Whether it’s a theatre show or large festival stage, his persona is irresistible and completely destroys all barriers. “I will be bringing two singers with me for the show in Camrose. If I am not performing a solo show, the first thing I add are voices, rather than a drummer or another instrument. The idea of voices harmonizing is such an impor-
tant element to music, that I want to add them. We can do a lot with just us, three voices.” He uses a stomper and looper to fill out the sound with the vocals. “Everyone wants to play in front of 3,000 or more fans, but a cabaret setting is also great. When I played there with Luke, it was wonderful because the audience was right in front of us. These shows work really well and people have a great time. I like the intimate shows and getting a rapport with the audience.” When not touring, he produces for other artists.

The CAMROSE BOOSTER, October 15, 2019 – Page 25
John James Klug September 12, 1932 ~ October 7, 2019 John was born in Camrose on September 12, 1932 to John and Julia Klug. As the middle child, he had an older brother Henry and a younger sister Irene. He is survived by his three nieces Diane Klug, Shelley (Doug) Moch and Linda (Terry) Feindel; as well as three great-nieces Kelsey Moch and Madison and Taylor Feindel. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother Henry; sister Irene Jones; and two brothers-in-law Gordon Case and Edward “Sam” Jones. John attended the local schools and then went to Calgary to obtain his Journeyman Mechanics license. Upon completion, he joined his father and Henry in the family business, J. Klug and Sons. The three of them worked together until his Dad’s untimely passing in 1959. His brother Henry then opened Klug’s Garage and, once again, the brothers worked side by side until John developed allergies to exhaust. John left the mechanics trade and became a bus driver, and for 25 years, he worked for the Separate School Division transporting kids to school and on field trips. During this time, he and his mother also became custodians of both St. Patrick School and OLMP. They cleaned both schools for a number of years until finally devoting all their time to St. Pat’s, which was just up the street from where they lived. As well as having three mechanics in the family, John also carried on the tradition of having members of the Klug family volunteering for the Camrose Fire Department. In 1958, he joined alongside his dad and Henry, wearing #23 and retiring in 1989 as a Captain. John was an avid bowler in his time with many trophies and awards to his credit. He loved fishing and making flies as a pastime. Many camping trips were made with his mother, Henry, Irene and Sam. Several of those trips included his nieces who will always cherish those memories. He became a very good cook over the years and mastered the 3 Day Pickle. If the food was good, he called it “Gooder Stuff”. After losing his mother in 2006, John started to slow down. To keep himself active, he was enlisted as after school care for his great-niece Kelsey. Together they would watch TV, take short trips and, best of all, see what was available in the pantry or fridge. In May of 2017, John became ill and required additional care. He was diagnosed with Dementia and moved to Faith House in October of that year. The following April, he fell and cracked his hip, placing him in hospital for about a month. Bethany Meadows then became his home until his peaceful passing with his family at his side. He was a kind man, who loved to laugh, was devoted to his family, loved hugs and will be forever loved and missed. A Prayer Vigil was held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 10, 2019 from Burgar Memorial Chapel. A Funeral Mass was held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 11, 2019 from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Joby Augustin officiating. Inurnment has taken place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in John’s memory may be made to Alzheimer Society of Alberta or to the Bethany Group. Gordon Morton Minnes April 4, 1930 ~ October 5, 2019 Gordon Minnes was born to Joseph and Mary Minnes on April 4, 1930 in Victoria BC, and passed away peacefully on October 5, 2019 at the age of 89 years. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Agnes; daughter Debbie (Mel); daughter-in-law Gina; eight grandchildren Mandy, Kyle, Brittany, Samantha, Shae-Lynn, Shelby, Asia and Journee; four great-grandchildren Jaxson, Asher, Alexander and Lexi; and many nieces, nephews and a multitude of friends and acquaintances. Gord was predeceased by his parents, son Rodney, eight brothers and four sisters. Over their fifty-nine years of marriage, Gord and Agnes gained the love of their extended families, which are too numerous to mention. Gord was always very grateful to all of them for making him feel special with their love and affection. Gord worked in the banking profession in his early years and then in 1955, joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. While stationed in Portage la Prairie, he met Agnes and they were married in March of 1960. In July of 1960, they were transferred to Marville, France for a four-year term and that is where their two children were born. After terms in Camp Borden and Cold Lake, Gord decided to leave the forces after twenty-one years of service, and retired to Camrose in 1975. Gord was employed as assistant administrator with the Bethany Group for a few years and then Home Hardware for thirteen years. As a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for fifty-five years, Gord’s involvement was second to none. Over his forty-four years in Camrose, he was President eleven different times and devoted his knowledge and time to this wonderful organization. The friends and acquaintances that he made through the Legion and the wonderful people of Camrose were very special to Gord and we wish to thank all members and friends for their love and support. A celebration of life will be held at the Camrose Royal Canadian Legion from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2019. In lieu of flowers, if family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Gordon’s memory may be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation or to the S.T.A.R.S. Air Ambulance. Party platforms and the environments
A research company survey in September revealed that Canadians rate the environment as the top election issue over the economy and jobs, health care and housing. The highest profile environmental issue is climate change. It is driving sea level rise, increasing extreme weather, and reducing the extent of sea ice; and Canada is warming at twice the global average. As a wealthy Greg King, nation with high emissions per Environment, person, and that already has Augustana Campus enviable access to renewable University of Alberta energy sources, Canada must play an important role in contributing to solutions. Under the Paris Agreement, which aims to keep global average temperature increase well below two degrees Celsius, Canada committed to reducing carbon emissions to 30 per cent below our 2005 level by 2030. We are not currently on track to meet this goal, making it important to evaluate where the major federal parties stand on this commitment. A major contrast between parties is their position on a carbon tax. The Conservatives and People’s Party of Canada (PPC) would eliminate the carbon tax, while the Greens, Liberals and NDP would retain a revenue-neutral price on carbon that would gradually increase over time. Revenue-neutral means that most or all money collected would be returned to individuals through income tax rebates (Canadian companies also pay a carbon tax and receive output-based rebates). Analysis by the Parliamentary Budget Office found that all but the wealthiest 20 per cent of Canadians would receive more in rebates than they would pay in carbon tax. This structure provides an incentive for people to make choices that reduce their carbon footprint in ways that make sense for them. Economists consider a revenue-neutral carbon tax to be the lowest cost way to reduce emissions. The Conservative plan relies on providing incentives, such as a green technology fund, to attract private investment and industry-driven solutions. The CPC also propose a limited two-year green homes tax credit, along with public transit tax credits and have a goal to end the use of foreign oil by 2030. There are ideas here, but they lack details such as specific targets and firm timelines. Independent assessments show the plan will not meet the Paris Agreement targets. The Green Party has the most ambitious environmental plan, a 60 per cent emissions reduction below 2005 levels by 2030. Beyond a carbon tax, policies include imposing import tariffs on countries with lower carbon tax rates, ending all oil imports as soon as possible, and using no oil for energy by 2050. They would harness the transferable skills of oil and gas workers through investments in retraining and create jobs through building retrofits. Overall, their plan sets quantifiable targets and links goals to specific policies. However, questions remain on the feasibility of the plan given the timelines proposed. The Liberals say they will exceed the 30 per cent target by 2030. Major policies include increasing the carbon tax from $20 to $50 a tonne by 2022 (about 11 cents per litre of gasoline), phasing out coal power by 2030, offering interest-free loans to energy retrofit homes and planting two billion trees over the next 10 years. Although some promises lack specificity, their goals may be more achievable as they build on four years of momentum. The NDP plan proposes a 38 per cent reduction in carbon emissions by 2030. Beyond the carbon tax, they would reduce carbon tax breaks to large polluters, while immediately eliminating fossil fuel subsidies and reinvesting the funds into low carbon initiatives. The party would create a Climate Bank to boost made-in-Canada manufacturing of renewable energy components and technology. The NDP have ambitious goals; however, many of their policies aim to affect areas of provincial responsibility. The PPC have released a very limited environmental platform with many inaccurate statements, notably their denial of the reality of global climate change and the supporting science. Although surveys and polls may separate the environment from issues such as jobs, economy and health, we know they are interconnected. I encourage you to learn more by carefully reading the party platforms or accessing an online platform comparison tool. Climate change will continue to have an impact on our collective well-being and is a key ballot box issue.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

THANK YOU I FEEL HONOURED – and privileged to have met all the wonderful people as I walked around Mirror Lake. I started April 1 and as of today, October 10, I have gone 193 days in a row. It is approximately 530 km. On Wednesdays at 9:30 I walk around the lake with the Bereavement Group and they are like an extended family to me. On Mondays at 9:00 a.m., I walk around the lake with two very positive friends of mine. I have sent pictures of the lake and the swans to a relative of mine in Manitoba and she told me that they were awesome. I really believe that the swans should stay because they are part of our heritage. I would like to thank Sheila Dejesus and the rest of the customer service folks at Home Hardware for their commitment of serving the community. After a good walk, I enjoy a great cup of coffee at Fiona’s. – Sincerely yours, Kelly Wiebe

“Housing is another area SOS assists seniors. “We have been able to successfully get a few homeless people housing,” said SOS program director Christina Rehmann. Through direct links to seniors subsidized housing government resources SOS can assist seniors with living accommodation concerns and also assist those who are transitioning from single family dwellings to apartments or assisted living housing. But there are also the soft services SOS offers, the ones that may not be as obvious, may not require assistance filling out forms but just the warm touch of a hand, an ear to listen, a shoulder to lean on or an open heart to help heal. Moving forward, SOS wants to continue to be innovative leaders on providing support to seniors. “We have an amazing board that is dedicated to senior focused care. We would love to not even have to exist, in that seniors are well supported in their community through connections with neighbours, friends and family,” smiled Rehmann. One of the major goals
in the sites of SOS is to become a leader in Alberta as a community that looks after their seniors. “We aspire to be a Seniors’ Hub providing seniors with focused care,” said Rehmann, which she continued would include strong connections to the many resources already available within Camrose that offer support to seniors. “It is important to support seniors in making choices that help them live with dignity and with independence. Make sure they are supported in their decision making so they can thrive, and seniors that are thriving are seniors that give back to community, especially with volunteering. “We want our seniors to have that connection because it keeps them healthier and living longer.” For more information on the services and programs offered by SOS, visit the website at soscamrose. ca or drop into the office located at 5014B-48 Street, during open office or telephone 780-672-4131 and have a chat with Christina or Lesley.

Two children also did a skit pretending they were businesspeople taking an order and dealing with customer issues. “Each vendor is charged a two dollar fee to have their product featured at the market and after the training meeting, they get busy figuring out the price of their product, how they will present it and other details.” The group is also assigned a business man-
ager, who is usually an older child from one of the families, who is responsible for writing receipts for the business lease fee, helping with name tags, getting more change if needed, getting parents in the event of any medical or other concerns and providing washroom breaks for the vendors. “Last year, we had well over 30 children (vendors). This year, there are about 25,” noted Faye. “They are so professional and the

products they come up with are imaginative.” The products vary from food goods, with vendors having to take the food handling safety course and display their certificate at the market, to jewellery, wooden products, Christmas ornaments and other unique ideas. While Faye has yet to set an actual age limit to the
program, she indicated that the youngest vendor was six years old to about 14 or 15 years of age when the children tend to self-retire. “We have never really set an age limit on either side.” Faye said how the parents must be very proud, concluding that she too is very proud of the ambition and focus of these young entrepreneurs.
CGT joins MG3 for six guitars on stage Continued from page 21
They are the winners of the 2011 Opus Award for concert of the year in the Jazz and World Music category, MG3 has released six albums, including Der Prinz on Analekta label, which earned him a nomination at ADISQ 2014 for the Instrumental Album of the year. In January 2017, the trio launched its seventh album Danzas in Montreal, which pays tribute to the great composers of Spanish music in the likes of Paco de Lucia and Manuel de Falla. “People who attend our concert will recognize the well-known songs, such as from The Beatles. They will be happy to hear it, but lots of more modern music as well classical and jazz,” shared Marc. When most trios want to add a fuller sound, they add different instruments. Not MG3, they added three more guitars! “I laugh because I never thought of it that way. It didn’t happen that way where we woke up one day and said we should add more guitars. We needed anything but more guitars.” Enjoy a rare concert with six virtuoso guitarists devoting themselves to becoming one sound. “The world of classical guitars is a small world. About 10 years ago, the California Guitar Trio and our group attended the same music conference. We each wanted to hear each other play and see what each other was doing. They are a great group of guys and we got along well. “The difference is that they play on steel strings and we play on nylon strings, so the sound is a little different,” explained Marc, who mostly plays bass. “They were blending lots of styles and we wanted to do the same. By coincidence, we were booked on the same flight back, so we talked about some shows together. People wanted that and we didn’t know for how long, maybe a tour. After 10 years we are still performing both as our groups and together. It is a change to play together and it keeps it fresh. It is a nice dynamic. Arranging guitars is what we do best.” Their most memorable collaboration to date is with the California Guitar Trio (CGT), when both ensembles joined forces to give brilliantly performed greatest rock classics from The Beatles, Radiohead, and David Bowie. Since the fall of 2010, the sextet has toured across Canada and the United States, performing in over 100 cities.
