Sterling Topping, age four, and his three-year-old brother Bennet help grandma Tammy Grose, Century Meadows Baptist Church co-ordinator for Operation Christmas Child, pack several shoeboxes.
You probably know it as the Christmas Shoebox program. Operation Christmas Child, offered by Samaritan’s Purse, is your chance to fill a gift shoebox with toys, hygiene articles, school supplies and items which will be cherished by a young person. Each shoebox filled will be distributed to a child suffering as a result of war, poverty, famine, disease or disaster. The local headquarters is Century Meadows Baptist Church with drop-off locations strategically placed throughout Camrose. Last year 2,326 boxes were filled and gifted. Organizers hope to surpass this number in this year’s campaign.
Shoebox Collection Week is November 18 to 24, 2019

Hooky fans rally Kodiaks
Book now! “Any size job welcome, big or small.”
By Murray Green
All of the Camrose Kodiaks fans attending the Hockey Hooky Day should have been named the first star because they made the difference for the home team on Oct. 29. More than 1,600 fans cheered on the Kodiaks to rally them to a 6-2 victory over the Calgary Canucks. Camrose scored four goals in the opening period by feeding off the fans. Calgary goalie Jay Thompson was chased early, but when Connor Martin didn’t fair well either, he had to go back in. Damon Zimmer, Callum Gau, Lynden Grunberg and Cody Laskosky, scored for the Kodiaks to go up 4-0 after 20 minutes. Jacob Kendall netted a shorthanded marker and an even strength goal to go up 6-0. The Kodiaks backed off a bit in the third to make it a 6-2 final. Goalie Cole Tisdale stopped 28 of 30 shots in the Camrose net. The Kodiaks fired 52 on the Calgary cage. The Okotoks Oilers blanked the Kodiaks 3-0 on Oct. 26. Tisdale stopped 23 of 25 shots directed his way. Camrose scored three tallies in the third period to skate away with a 4-1 victory over the Grande Prairie Storm on Oct. 25. After a Storm goal, Camrose scored four

The Kodiaks next home games are against the Okotoks Oilers on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. and the Canucks on Nov. 10 at 2:30 p.m. in the Encana Arena.
The Kodiaks added defenceman Jarod Newell to the line-up. He is no stranger to Camrose and played bantam hockey here. Jarod played a year in the Western Hockey League with the Tri-City Americans. Last year, he played 44 games and collected a goal and an assist. This year the Wainwright-born player only played one game.

wa r ds Cer emon y A S H C C É • November 8 • Last spring the bustle of planning for the annual ÉCCHS awards ceremony began. BRSD representatives, together with ÉCCHS administration began the review of awards for the 2018-19 school year. Todd Sieben, principal of ÉCCHS was delighted to receive the news that an additional windfall had made its way to students in the amount of $50,000 dollars. “University costs are soaring,” notes Sieben, “and we have been blessed with so many community agencies and advocates who are reaching out to support our students. It’s extremely overwhelming and very much appreciated.” This
Leif Hvenegaard
speaks highly of the French Immersion program. As this year’s school valedictorian, Leif is pursuing a career in medicine. “In biology and chemistry class I discovered my love of biological sciences, especially human biology and this interest has fueled my university intentions with a future goal of studying medicine.” Leif will be the recipient of the Hershita Sainbhee Memorial Award. His achievements and contributions to the school community as well his academics made him a natural candidate. “Hershita is remembered as a student who represented the best in people.” said Principal Sieben. “Her warmth, kindness and remarkable academic skills were the criteria we used in making our selection. We wanted to see the award given to a deserving candidate who can continue with Hershita’s legacy.”
The ÉCCHS Awards program will be held November 8th in the Trojan Zone. Community members are welcomed to join us at 6:30 p.m. to celebrate all the students who have achieved honours and awards for school contributions.
year ÉCCHS awarded 23 students with Agnes Boness Scholarships. Other generous awards from private donors and the Battle River Community Foundation have also had great impact. “These agencies and citizens are making ÉCCHS an ideal environment for students pursuing post secondary studies whether they are entering apprenticeship programs, trades, college, or university.” adds Sieben. Students have chosen ÉCCHS as their academic home for a lot of reasons, not just those related to post secondary studies.
Emma Leigh Simonot
another French Immersion class mate, performed in the play “Les Miserables”. She is now pursuing an Honours Degree in Arts at the University of Waterloo this fall. Her special moment materialized when she became a part of ÉCCHS’s ambitious musical program. “Being a part of this program was a catalyst for me. Not only did it introduce the concept of musical theatre and stage performance, it gave me an experience of being in a specialized school.”
Tyler Hafso
is attending the University of Alberta this fall. It was the CTS courses which impacted him. “Being in design studies and fabrication has shown me an appreciation for physical tangible objects which is a major part of technical engineering.”
Molly Boyd
is attending Grant MacEwan this fall. She found inspiration in Communication Technology. “In grade 10 I got to try Photoshop for the first time in Mrs. Severson’s class. It was art, but it was also on a computer. It was the perfect balance between creativity and my knack for technology.”
Hannah Boller
is attending Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta this fall to go into Education. She spoke about the soft skills she learned as a student of the school. “I learned the importance of kindness to everyone you meet. I also learned the importance of considering others and the importance of constantly learning.” Hannah has also been dramatically impacted by her teachers. “I have seen the heart and dedication that teachers have invested into all of their students. It’s inspired me to go into a Bachelor of Education at the University of Alberta, I hope one day to help kids the way my teachers have helped me.”
acknowledges the role of responsibility in furthering his own learning. “The atmosphere at ÉCCHS is very inclusive and promotes hard work. The teachers have been demanding yet supportive, inspiring skilled teachers, in combination of being in a hard working student atmosphere have made me a more responsible student.” Principal Seiben is reflective, thinking about what students have gained in their programs. “Being in a school that can offer as much as we do, is wonderful. We want to ensure that every student in our building sees the truth of our mantra “Every student, everyday, opportunities for success.”

Poppy Flag Day launches campaign By Murray Green
The Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion held a Poppy Flag raising at the cenotaph beside the museum on Oct. 25. Poppies will be left at various businesses around Camrose and area. Tag Day is a time when Legion members, along with both Air and Army Cadets, will be throughout the area, on Nov. 9.
You will find Legion members and Cadets at several popular locations with poppies available for a donation. The Remembrance Day service will be held on Nov. 11 at the Camrose Regional Exhibition. Contact the Legion to purchase your wreath for the Remembrance Day ceremony, or to leave a donation.
Remembrance Day honours our freedom By Murray Green
The Remembrance Day service will be held on Monday, Nov. 11 at the Camrose Regional Exhibition beginning at 11 a.m. The Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will lead the Remembrance Day ceremony. Members ask that people be seated by 10:45 a.m. so they can be prepared to start on time because of the observing of two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. Legion members and Cadets from South Alberta Light Horse Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps and Air Cadets in Camrose will be participating in the service, as well as a local policeman and fireman. The ÉCCHS band will be providing the music, and community groups such as the Cubs and Scouts, will join the parade march led by veterans. It is easy to honour those who gave their lives so we could enjoy freedom. It is much harder to help
those who return scarred from what they saw or did in war situations. “This year, the colour party will be led in by the Air Cadets,” said Camrose Legion organizer Lloyd Dool. Mayor Norm Mayer will be making his address to honour local people who fought in the world conflicts. MP Damien Kurek and MLA Jackie Lovely will be delivering or sending a message. Bob Bailey will be playing the trumpet and Alex Oliver will be playing the bagpipes. A local Cadet will read from a letter about someone who is remembered at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. “We are having the Camrose Children’s Choir back to perform again this year,” said Comrade Dool, about the popular addition. A reading of In Flanders Fields, several songs and laying of wreaths will also be part of the service.

Campaign supports community projects By Murray Green
Every year, from the last Friday of October (Oct. 25) to Nov. 11, millions of Canadians wear a poppy as a visual pledge to honour Canada’s veterans and remember those who sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today. The Legion gratefully accepts donations to the Poppy Campaign. The Poppy Campaign is very much a local initiative, conducted by Legion Branches in cities, towns and communities across the country, including Camrose. Donations collected during the Poppy Campaign are held in Trust at the branch level to directly support veterans and their families within their community and to help ensure Canadians never forget. In the days leading up to Nov. 11, poppies can be seen in every corner of this great country. This show of support and display of
remembrance would not be possible without the efforts of thousands of Legionnaires and Cadets who volunteer to distribute poppies to the community through schools, community organizations and local businesses. We are so grateful for their efforts, and for the support of the many partners, local and national, who welcome Legion volunteers and poppy boxes into their locations. Legion branches inform the public of the results of their Poppy Campaign and how donations were disbursed over the following year. In 2017, the Poppy Campaign distributed 19.8 million poppies and more than $16 million was disbursed to support veterans and their families as well as bursaries for students. If you are looking for poppies, contact the Bawlf or Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion until Nov. 11.

Family violence prevention month aimed at awareness By Lori Larsen
Family violence is something that happens, unfortunately, in every walk of life and every community; so building awareness and educating people on the resources available for assistance can make huge strides in not only helping those in need, but preventing incidents from occurring in the first place. To assist in the effort and continue the momen-
tum of building awareness and moving towards prevention, November has been proclaimed Family Violence Prevention Month in Alberta. On Oct. 29, City of Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer and Camrose County Reeve Cindy Trautman signed a proclamation declaring November Family Violence Prevention Month. Present to witness the signing, were Family Vio-
lence Action Society program director Sheralyn Dobos, Camrose Police Service crime prevention and community relations officer Constable Kelly Bauer, Camrose and District Victim Services program manager Macki Rumak, Camrose Women’s Shelter outreach child and youth care coordinator Jan Turnbull, and Camrose Women’s Shelter outreach coordinator Leslie Lindballe.
This year’s theme #WhereToTurn, encourages people to learn what resources are available in their communities mandated to support those affected by family violence. In Camrose there are several organizations that provide programs, services and support or can direct those in need to the services available, some of which include, Camrose and District Support Services
(CDSS), Family Violence Action Society (FVAS), Camrose and District Victim Services (CVSU), Camrose Women’s Shelter, Camrose Police Service, Camrose RCMP, Camrose Open Door Society, Camrose Primary Care Network (PCN), St. Mary’s Hospital, Service Options for Seniors (SOS), school counselling services and churches.

The rumour that the year round Camrose Saturday Farmers’ Market at Duggan Mall has moved to Augustana or has closed down or is dead is just that, a myth. The person or persons who have spread this rumour are unknown to me at this time. How did I come to hear of this rumour: two respected residents and loyal customers of our market decided to visit yesterday and told us that they had heard we were done. Nothing is further from the truth. At our annual meeting held in October 2018, a motion was brought forward, “To explore other venues in Camrose where we might potentially relocate our Market.” In March 2019 at a special meeting, the membership of the Camrose and District Farmers’ Market Association (CDFMA) defeated the motion to move the market to Augustana and that they wanted to continue to hold our year round market at Duggan Mall. We have many great vendors with great prod-
ucts and many are members of the Food Artisans of Camrose County, a local foods initiative wholly sponsored by Camrose County. New vendor inquiries are certainly welcome, check out our website at www.camrosefarmersmarket.ca. John Girvan, past president CDFMA More leadership
Instead of petulance, why don’t Conservatives ask themselves, “What is the reason our vision doesn’t resonate with a broader range of Canadians? ” Face it, the Prime Minister’s leadership is a disappointment even by the standards of many Liberals. If there was ever an election that should’ve been easy to win for a strong opposition party, this one was it. I think reform-party Conservatives ignore the fact that most Canadians are progressively-minded. We’ve all seen the memes f loating around from the Conservative’s support groups, such as the Yellow Vests, Alberta Strong (or Ontario Strong, etc.) that attack science, women,
immigrants, LGBTQ2+, young voters, and the list goes on. In fact, these aren’t disag reements, they are vitriolic and hateful in nature. This profoundly doesn’t resonate with young and progressive voters. Instead of merely trying to demonize opponents, why don’t Conservatives try to show why they are the better option by doing something they haven’t for decades? Win people over by showing them they have a superior platform that furthers their cause, but includes us all instead of drawing lines between groups. Demonizing others and then asking them to trust you’ll be fair is hardly a strategy. I remember when Progressive Conservatives were a truly national party concerned with all of Canada. I think Conservatives need to show integrity too, instead of just demanding it from others. Perhaps they’d fair better. Mark Lindberg, Camrose
Blank sheet of paper. Blank screen. Blank mind. Lots bopping around my mind, but can’t think of a single thing I want to write about. Not good. Commitment and deadline needs to be met, blank mind or not. So, a fallback–other people’s words. Here are some quotes I’ve appreciated lately, especially when observing things going on in the external world. Hope at least one of these does something nice for your week. The first quote made me laugh–with startled recognition of something that’s never occurred to me before. Buckminster Fuller was an inventor, architect and visionary. Once a student asked him, “Professor Fuller, do you think there is life in outer space?” “Young man,” Fuller answered, “Just where do you think you are?” It’s never occurred to me before that yes, we are in outer space! Somehow that changes my perspective. Buckminster Fuller also said this: “You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” That quote took me to something I realized a long time ago and have often forgotten. Harold Nelson, an architect turned systems-thinker academic, talks about “Wicked Problems” in contrast to “ordinary problems.” Ordinary problems, he says, can be solved by logical means–define the problem, identify factors causing it, identify possible solutions, test them out and choose the most effective one. But wicked problems cannot be solved by pure logic. For starters, wicked problems cannot be defined. Take poverty or climate change for example. Every attempt to define the problem takes you to another problem. The more you delve into the problem, the more you are entangled. You can’t identify a single manageable source of the problem or test out a single possible solution. You also can’t shut down what’s currently happening while you test out something new. How to approach wicked problems? Nelson says, “Turn your back on the wicked problem and walk towards your vision.” Another version of Buckminster Fuller’s “Build a new model.” If you want something to be better, it’s counterproductive to be “against” what currently exists. Being “against” just increases the resistance to change. Like me, you may feel against things that appall you. But do not take action until you have a sense of what you are “for” and move towards that. Thinking of Nelson’s wicked problems takes me to Mother Teresa, the diminutive Albanian Roman Catholic nun who devoted her life to working with sick and poor people in the streets of Calcutta. Among many of her quotes are these: “Peace begins with a smile.” “If you judge people you have no time to love them.” “Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.” My favourite Mother Teresa quote is this: “I know God will not give me anything I can’t handle. But sometimes I just wish God didn’t trust me so much.” And finally, two quotes from Mark Gonzales’ In Times of Terror, Wage Beauty, a slim book of pungent observations and images. I go back to this one often, especially when I’m feeling fearful or dis-spirited. “As I look at the world today, I am aware of how miniscule one person may seem to the systemic actions in front of our eyes, yet oddly, I ask you to laugh at such shrinking of our potential. For the Divine does not make mistakes and nearly every sacred tradition says we who exist were imagined since the beginning of time. “What does that mean? Simple. “We were made for this moment.” And one more quote from Mark Gonzales: “For even if your contribution to a better world seems like a small step, never doubt the power of a micro-strategy done with a macro intent.” Hope at least one of these is an uplifter! What quotes or thoughts help lift your spirit? I’d love to hear from you! Send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com and I’ll happily reply within one business day.

Distracted driving
I am interested to make public aware about the seriousness of road accidents and the penalties. Our family was in a serious highway accident on June 27, 2018 on Highway 21. We lost our 16-year-old daughter and we all got life threatening injuries. There are more victims of this accident who are still suffering. It was a six car collision resulting from a driver of a delivery truck not paying attention to the vehicles stopped behind a vehicle to make left turn. It is a case of
distracted driving. It was a collision of high magnitude. After 16 months of anxious waiting for the judgement, we were disappointed when the driver was offered to plead guilty to only careless driving as he did not plead guilty to dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm. He got a fine of $2,000 and 90 days suspension of his driving license. This was shocking not only for us, but the whole Camrose community. Give me the opportunity to make public aware to take
care of themselves, while driving and to report seeing anyone using a phone, while driving. As such people end up causing collision and the victims suffer without getting justice. It is as serious as drinking and driving. The punishment should be more serious then only people will take it seriously. We are all on the road on a daily basis and our lives are at risk. Distracted driving can take a life. Don’t text and drive. I don’t want anyone else to suffer. The family is re-victimized when the
offender is not punished for taking a precious life. I am very thankful for our community to support for justice to Hershita Sainbhee. But unfortunately, such a driver is off the roads for only 90 days. Stay safe on the roads. Parampreet Sainbhee, Camrose Electoral reform
Justin Trudeau broke a cornerstone 2015 platform promise and it needs to be fulfilled now more than ever. I had always been a stubborn first past the post supporter, but my view has changed drastically over just the last few months. In 2015, Trudeau promised that “we are committed to ensuring that the 2015 election will be the last federal election using first past the post.” The committee responsible for recommendations on an appropriate replacement made it’s recommendations, and Trudeau backed out of the promise on the grounds that there wasn’t a clear con-

sensus with Canadians on which system to go with. Four years later, it’s become quite clear that a proportional representation system would have been best for the country based on some of the glaring inconsistencies this election result has brought on, the direction of consensus on issues in differing regions and the rabbit holes people are being lead down as a result such as western separation and self righteous environmentalism. Trudeau couldn’t get his ranked ballot outcome so he scrapped the whole idea because first past the post was the next best option for the Liberals. This should have been pointed out much more during the campaign. With proportional representation the east would have provided more Conservative voices that do exist there. The NDP would have a better representation in Alberta so supporters here could get their voice. Working together would become crucial to political survival instead of the other way around. The country is divided and the gap has grown too wide under the current system. Something has to give, and it can’t be having the country end as we know it. Never thought I’d be nervous to tell a fellow countryman which province I’m from, but here we are and that is a major cause for concern not just for me, but anybody who gives a damn about the wellbeing of Canada. Garlands and Gatherings shines bright at CRE this season By Lori Larsen
In celebration of the season and all things family, the Camrose Regional Exhibition is hosting a new flare on an old tradition. What used to be The Festival of Trees event has now transformed into Garlands and Gatherings at the CRE, part of the bigger Garlands and Gatherings Community initiative. Camrose Tourism executive director Jennifer Filip, and Camrose Regional Exhibition executive director Dianne Kohler brainstormed in January of this year to come up with a County and City wide initiative that would combine a number of events that occur around the holiday season. The objective was to create a committee comprised of representation from several organizations in the City of Camrose and Camrose County. The end result was Garlands and Gatherings an initiative aimed at providing the Camrose area with the best season of holiday celebrations. “Garlands and Gatherings, at its heart, was created as a community event to get all the events happening this time of year coordinated and not run concurrent events during the holiday season, so it is easier for people that really want to go to every event,”
said Kohler. “We are all working together to provide the best experience for the guest.” The biggest event the CRE has provided for many years has been the Festival of Trees, which Kohler admits served a wonderful purpose in the community. “However the number one complaint we had about the Festival of Trees was it had not changed much in years, that there was nothing new and not a lot for families (with children of varying ages) to do. So we really took that to heart and completely revised it.” The team devised an event that fit more into the concept of “all things family” named, Garlands and Gatherings at the CRE, from Nov. 22 to 24. The Teddy Bear Disco, a popular family event will still be held on the Wednesday, Nov. 20, prior to Garlands and Gatherings at the CRE. The Camrose Community Performance stage will be running for the bulk of performances on Saturday, Nov. 23 and photos with Santa will still be a main attraction running: Friday, Nov. 22 from 2 until 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 23 from 11 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. and 2 until 4 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 24 from 1:30 until
3:30 p.m., sponsored by the City of Camrose. In an effort to reach out to children/youth of all ages the CRE will be adding 5,000 square feet of a Children Fun Zone consisting of a variety of inflatable rides. A Toddlers Room for children under five-years of age will include an inflatable ride more conducive to smaller children and activity centres for the children to do crafts. A Video Game Theatre will feature a variety of video games for video game enthusiasts to come and test out new video games, do hands on play, challenge another player and have mini tournaments. The floor layout will also be taking on a new look. “We have tried to make it more interactive with gift vendors and not-for-profit
booths placed throughout the main floor area and Santa (photos) strategically placed in the middle.” CRE is welcoming any notfor-profit organizations to set up a booth (free of charge for not-for-profits) and take this oppor tunity to speak with attendees about the great work they do in the communities. “The theme this year is Funky Christmas – it is going to be very bright and neon; we will still have some trees, but what we are really aiming for this year is to have activities for all ages instead of mostly just trees to view. Lots of hands on fun.” Kohler added with exuberance that the oversized artificial tree that used to adorn the mezzanine area is being replaced this year with a very large, very real tree, decorations and all. Garlands and Gatherings at the CRE will run Friday, Nov. 22 from 2 until 7 p.m., Saturday Nov. 23 from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sunday Nov. 24 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Rumour has it there
may even be a Children’s entertainer making a visit. Tickets are available online for the event and part of the cost of admission includes a donation to Camrose Neighbor Aid (Food Bank). “This way the Food Bank staff can use the funds to purchase items that are most needed or need to be purchased fresh such as dairy or produce items,” explained Kohler. For the month of November, the CRE will also be conducting a City Wide 50/50 ticket draw. Out of the proceeds the winner has the potential to walk away with $10,000 (if all 4,000 tickets are sold). “With the remaining 50 per cent, the CRE is only keeping 25 per cent and the other 25 per cent we are donating to the Christmas Cheer Fund.” Representatives will be selling tickets at any of the Garlands and Gatherings Community events being held throughout the season, as well as the Garlands and Gatherings at the CRE event (if they are not sold out by then.) For more information on any of the CRE upcoming events, visit the website at cre.ab.ca/events.

Police forces nab car thief By Lori Larsen
Camrose Police Service and Wetaskiwin RCMP collaborated on yet another case that lead to the recovery of a stolen vehicle and arrest of one suspect. Following a robbery investigation occurring on Oct. 23 and 24 by Wetaskiwin RCMP involving one female and male suspect and a stolen vehicle, Camrose Police Service locat-
ed the stolen vehicle and female suspect. The investigation ensued on Oct. 23 when Wetask iwin RCM P received a complaint that two suspects took the victim’s Oldsmobile Alero, while he was parked outside a local business. The male suspect allegedly had a firearm, and the female suspect a knife. The female asked for help with a medical condition and the
victim allowed her into his car to drive her to the hospital. Once in the car, the female produced the knife and demanded the car. The victim complied and the two suspects drove away with his car. During the incident the victim was not injured and at no time was a gun observed. On Oct. 24, while responding to an unrelated incident, Camrose Police Service located the
stolen Alero and arrested the female suspect then turned custody of her over to members of the Wetaskiwin RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS). The 32-year-old female suspect is facing charges of robbery with other offensive weapon and theft of a vehicle. A judicial interim release hearing has been held and she has been released from custody. She is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 29. The 30-year-old male suspect, of Maskwacis, has been charged with robbery
with other offensive weapon and theft of a car. He has not been located and a warrant for his arrest has been issued. If you have information that may assist in locating the male suspect, please contact the Wetaskiwin RCMP at 780-312-7267 or your local police at 780672-4444. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips. com or by using the P3 Tips app.

The Churchmice Players have done it again. The Addams Family Musical is funny and entertaining as they gather everyone together for a special dinner. Although the real intent of the gathering is held back from Morticia, the event is derailed when the truth potion is applied. Brian Dumont as Gomez, Nick Goetz as Uncle Fester and Marla Moshuk as Lurch stole the show with their superb and commanding performances. Jillian Cross, the actress who played Morticia, is completely new to the stage, but turned in a great performance once the nerves left her. I’m sure we will be seeing more of Jillian in the future. “Churchmice has an excellent reputation of bringing top notch performances to the stage and this production is going to be among the best of them,” said producer Janine Carroll. Speaking of family, the cast really looked like a family on stage with great communication and connection to each other. “Churchmice does a fantastic job of making sure that every resource is available to directors and performers to ensure a top notch play,” added Janine. Directors are Sandra McLay and Cordellia Tindall. Stage manager is Katlin Anderson, choral director is David Salmon, choreography is shared by Duncan McDougall and Signe Peake, set design leader is Todd Sikorski, and props with Wendy Wenig and Aline Wenig (a mother and daughter team). Over the years, the Churchmice Players have collected costumes that might come in handy for future shows. That certainly paid off because every character in the show looked the way they were pictured in your mind, right down to the dead ancestors. The original newspaper cartoon series was made into a black and white television show in 1964-66 with a total of 64 shows. The show is a musical comedy suitable for the entire family. Dinner theatres will be held Nov. 7, 8 and 9 with the show starting at 7 p.m. Sunday matinee is on at 2 p.m. on Nov. 10.

The Melisizwe Brothers will be performing at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m. The boys will be having a 100-member choir singing background on three songs and 11 of those singers are from Camrose. “This concert is the biggest concert we have ever performed,” said Seth, the middle of the three brothers from Leduc. “When we have a concert, we have a meaning behind it. It will honour Remembrance Day, but none of the songs will be about Remembrance Day. We will remember the sacrifices that the veterans made,” shared Marc, the oldest. “The concert on Nov. 11 is about respecting the veterans. The songs won’t be about them, but for them,” added Zacary, the youngest. The Melisizwe Brothers, who have played at Jaywalkers’ Jamboree and the Lougheed Centre, will feature a 12-piece band, the 100-member choir and several performers and dancers on stage. This concert not only shows appreciation of remembrance to veterans, but is also the official welcoming of the brothers to the City of Edmonton and the launch of their Gold Mind Initiative (inspiring the world through music). Local members of the choir have been learning the three songs with help from Tom Spila and Bob Bailey and organized by Val Bailey. “We asked for some Camrose singers because this lovely city has supported us in our concert here. We had a choir at the concert and it went well, so we were thinking about Camrose when we were putting this large choir together,” offered Seth. École Charlie Killam School students Callie McFarlane, Genevieve Simonet, Keandra Leclercq, Faith MacIntyre, Isabella Wolsey, Avery Batke, Andrew Guenther, Noah Van Hyft and Meaghan Smith are joined by university students David Salmon and Chantel Schultz. “We are having a 100-piece choir because this is the biggest event we are having this year. Millar releases new Christmas song By Murray Green
One of Camrose and area’s favourite country music singers and songwriter Tracy Millar of Kelsey released a new Christmas song for the holiday season called “Him”. The song was released for play on Nov. 1 and could be picked up by various radio stations. “I’ve been wanting to write a Christmas song for years and I finally decided this is the year that I’m going to do it,” explained Tracy. “It will be a single song. I’m working on new material for an album that

will be coming out in the spring.” Tracy wanted to share her Christmas thoughts with everyone. “I started writing this song, believe it or not, close to 10 years ago. It was an idea that I had. I was feeling overwhelmed at Christmastime with so much hustle and bustle from so much stress, it felt like we were losing the whole meaning of Christmas. That’s what inspired me to write this song.” She left her ideas and thoughts on the shelf before revisiting the Christmas song this fall. “It just all came together. I guess it was the right time. I want people to sit back and think about what they are doing on the holidays and discover what the holidays mean to each one of us,” shared Tracy. “If we take everything out of the equation, take out the hustle and bustle and all of the craziness that

goes on, it still would be Christmas because we are celebrating ‘Him’ the birth of Jesus Christ. I just felt sometimes we lose the real meaning of Christmas.” Tracy recorded her song with a full band. “Hopefully, people will listen to it. I test played it for family and friends and the response has been very emotional so far. They say it describes to a tee what I feel and others feel at that time of year. That, for me, was validation that I wrote what I needed to write.” On Nov. 1, the song went everywhere you can buy music such as iTunes, Spotify and other streaming sites. “CFCW has been a great supporter of me over the years and I hope they play the song. I know how difficult it can be to get on those play lists. I hope that since it is an original song, that it will stand out a little bit.” The song was produced by a Juno Award winning producer, so radio stations will be more inclined to pick it up. “Hopefully, that helps me as an independent artist to receive plays and stand out. We are sending the song out internationally as well.” The music will rekindle memories. “The whole key for every song is to reflect on memories that could mean something different to you than it does to me. The song sends a strong message that when you take away everything, you still have ‘Him’ at that time of year.”

Arcana Kings set to rock By Murray Green
Although you may not be as familiar with the Arcana Kings as you are with Johnny McCuaig, you will recognize the high energy he brings to his band. The bagpipes player, rocker, alternative musician and his band are at the Alice Hotel on Nov. 15. Camrose band Big Smoke Revival will open for the Arcana Kings. He is excited to return to Camrose. “It is long overdue. We have been meaning to come back to Camrose for a long time. I have some very good friends that still live there and am looking forward to this show. Many people will remember us as the Johnny McCuaig Band. So we hope all of our old friends and fans will come out and hear some old tunes as well as some new tunes,” said Johnny. After graduating high school, Johnny joined his mother’s classic country band first as a drummer, then as a guitar player. This was a springboard that led him into a bass player roll with rocker Carson Cole. One day while playing in Yellowknife, Johnny happened to have his bagpipes with him and began to play with the band. The crowd’s response made such an impression on him that he
knew it was time to pursue an original minded career. This eventually led to the Johnny McCuaig band and now the Arcana Kings. Johnny is the lead singer, bagpipe player and rhythm guitarist for Arcana Kings. The lineup consists of Johnny on lead vocals, bagpipes and rhythm guitar, lead guitarist James Picton, rhythm guitarist and vocals Allan Morrison, on bass Kevin Kyle and drummer Graham Templeman. “We had so much fun recording this album. It has opened many doors for us including signing with Bad Reputation record label from France. Our song “Here We Go” was also used as the Saskatchewan Rough Riders run-out song last season. The songs are high energy rock songs with, of course, a twist of bagpipes,” added Johnny. “I’m pretty attached to all of the songs. Each one has it’s own story and personal experience with either myself or a band member. We try to capture our band mood and sound and write about it. ‘Here We Go’ is a getting ready to go out song, and pumping you up for the big event, while a song like ‘Unbreakable’ is about a promoter we worked with awhile back that totally knifed us in the back.” Johnny is a big fan of Big Smoke Revival. “Big

Walter John Klein November 27, 1937 ~ October 24, 2019 Walter Klein passed away peacefully in the early hours on October 24, 2019 at St. Mary’s Hospital at the age of 81. Walter was born in Westerose, Alberta and moved with his family to Heisler when he was two years old. He started working in construction when he was sixteen years old with his brother Leo and brother-in-law Dave. He moved to Camrose with his Mom and Dad in l957 and started working for Ofrim Construction and then for the City of Camrose for 36 years. He retired in l997. After he retired from the City, he spent six falls driving the grain truck for Lionel and Becky Clement just south of Donalda and just loved it. Walter and Joyce met in l959 and married in l964. They had wonderful times camping and travelling by car to visit his aunts and uncles in North Dakota and would also take his Mom there. He liked to golf and camp at the Bashaw Golf Course as long as he could (he was much better than Joyce). The last few trips were cruises which he liked the best of all, except maybe snowmobiling. Walter loved snowmobiling and would be out in all sorts of weather with friends and especially his nephews. He liked to hunt until his head injury in 1992. When he retired, he did a lot of woodworking building birdhouses and feeders and he was very particular that everything fit perfectly. His brother Lawrence taught him to drive when he was twelve years old, sitting on a syrup pail so he would see over the steering wheel and put a motor from his Dad’s lawnmower onto Walter’s bike so he had a motor bike for a while, until the motor was needed for the mower. Walter is survived by his wife Joyce of fifty-five years; sisters Bertha Mills and Bernice (Bruce) Albers; sister-in-law Blanche Klein; and numerous nieces and nephews. Walter was predeceased by his parents John and Irene Klein; sister Mary Franson; brothers Leo and Lawrence Klein; sister-inlaw Ilene Klein; brothers-in-law Charlie Mills and Dave Franson; nephews Ricky Franson and Warren Klein; and niece Baby Albers. He will be missed for sure. And by the way, he loved scaring people to death! A Funeral Mass was held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 from the St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Joby Augustin officiating. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Walter’s memory may be made to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, STARS Air Ambulance or to the Battle River Animal Protection Society. It is with unimaginable sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Miles William Bell, aged 59, in Camrose, Alberta on Sunday, October 27, 2019. He is survived by his family: Tanya Bell and Hannah Makokis of Edmonton, AB; Mary MacKay and Charlie MacKay of Camrose, AB; Allison and Crawford Stephens of Delaware, ON; Merry Ann Bell of Olds, AB; Ron and Maggie Schippling of Cambridge, ON; Tara and Michel Mondou of Cambridge, ON; Daniel Chornopyski and Miriam Ali of Morris, MB; Noreen Bell and Lyle Ray of St. Albert, AB; Jack and Iris Bell of Winnipeg, MB; Cathy Swanton of Duncan, BC; Jim Swanton of Lethbridge, AB; Jason Bell of Winnipeg, MB; Justin Bell of Winnipeg, MB; Andrea Watts of Edmonton, AB; Caroline Matthews of Edmonton, AB; Michael Archibald of Sylvan Lake, AB; Nick Swanton; Max Swanton; and Helena Bell of Winnipeg, MB. He was predeceased by his Mom and Dad, Margaret Lynn Bell and Bill Bell; as well as family members Catherine Barron, Pete Gellatly, Harold Archibald and Angus Archibald. Miles was a kind, considerate and wonderful son, father, grandfather, husband, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and best friend to many. He is also survived by a multitude of treasured friends and colleagues too numerous to possibly list. He was a successful businessman with an incredible work ethic who, over the course of his lifetime, built and loved his three businesses – Banner Feeds, Rapid Strides and Real Solutions Plus. Miles was always proud of how many families he supported through these companies. A consummate storyteller who loved to laugh, he was always caring and generous and without judgment of others. There is a long list of people Miles has helped and affected over the years in many, many ways, most importantly by being giving with his time and moral support. It is not possible for us to put into words how greatly he was loved nor how deeply he will be missed. As per Miles’ wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of his Life will be announced on a later date. In memory of Miles and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to a charity of your choice.

The automotive section of
Edsel Ranger rolls out special memories By Murray Green
David Orcheski of Viking gives a great big smile when talking about his 1958 Edsel Ranger vehicle. “My dad bought this car in 1964 at an auto wrecker. He bought this car and an old truck for $300. They were going to crush this car. When dad saw this car, he fell in love with it.” Edsels were built from 1958 to 1960 as fine looking automobiles, but didn’t exactly have a good reputation as being mechanically sound. “Dad brought the car home and it sat in the garage for years. He started fixing it and then took it to car shows, parades and everywhere,” explained David. “Then he passed away in 2012. I took the car over and began to go to car shows as well.” He goes to car shows to honour his dad’s (Alfred) memory. “I like to go to car shows. I haven’t done anything to the car, I’ve kept it the way it was, as original as possible. This car means everything to me because it was my dad’s car. It was like his third baby. There was mom, my sister, me and the Edsel. Not necessarily in that order,” David laughed. “He passed away

in the winter time and I took the car to his funeral. That is how much it meant to him and our family.” Ranger is one of two of Edsel’s model nameplates re-used by Ford Motor Company products, Villager being the other.
FUN FACTS
The Edsel Ranger was an automobile that was produced and sold by the newly formed Edsel Division of Ford for the 1958–60 model years. The Ranger was the base trim model for Edsel in its first and second years as an automotive marque. It was available in two-door coupes, four-door sedans, and two-and four-door hardtops with a convertible also offered in 1960. The Ranger’s base trim appointments included arm rests, a cigarette lighter, rear-view mirror, two coat hangers and black rubber floor mats. On the exterior, Rangers received chrome around the rear quarter panel cove molding. A very rare, optional, Ranger-only door trim was available from dealers early in the model year to be used together with the Pacer fender trim. A basic heater (as a US $92 option) and radio (at US $95) were available and air conditioning was optional as well (at $417), along with seat belts, warning lights, automatic trunk opener and rear door child safety lock covers. The Ranger had a 303 horsepower, 361 cubic inch with a four-barrel carburetor that was standard, as was a three-speed manual transmission. Buyers could upgrade to a three-speed automatic transmission with a standard column mounted gear selector, or could choose Edsel’s highly promoted, but trouble-prone Teletouch automatic, which placed its drive-selection buttons in the steering wheel hub, as a US $231 option.
David said he also likes the look of the Edsel style of cars which were looked upon as expensive in their day. “I have a friend, Joey, who has an Edsel as well and we often go to car shows together.” A raffle was held on a 1959 Ford Edsel and Joe won the car, which led to them being good friends. “There was a big change in the front grille from 1958 to the ’59s. My dad actually added a continental kit to give it more chrome. The ’59s had more chrome than the original 1958 models.” The main visual cue that makes it possible to tell the difference between most Rangers and the upmarket Pacer was the lack of stainless trim on the front doors and fenders. David’s Edsel has an E400 engine, which was an Edsel only motor. “It is equivalent to a 361 with some modifications. You can’t spin the tires because it is so low geared, but it will fly once you get going. Joe and I had a race and we were in excess of 90 miles an hour,” he added. “It has push button shift-
ing in the steering column. That didn’t work when dad got the vehicle. The car was abused pretty bad when dad picked up the car. A hole was drilled into the floorboard and a stick-shift was added. Dad found the parts and pieces he needed and the push button works great now,” shared David.
People often comment on the dingle balls hanging from the interior roof. “My dad put those up and I just left them.” David goes to Viking, Vegreville parades and several car shows such as Round Hill. When people see me coming, they give a friendly wave.”

The Augustana women’s soccer team defeated Medicine Hat 5-1 and lost 2-1 to Lethbridge on Oct. 19 and 20. The team finished with a 6-6 record, just missing the playoffs. Local player Demi Vermeer scored twice and single markers came from Jessica LaLonde, Kara Strange and Nicole Ubels. Goalie Cassidy Newcombe stopped 12 of 13 shots she faced against Medicine Hat. Strange netted the only goal against Lethbridge, while Newcombe stopped 12 of 14 shots. The men’s team were shut out 3-0 by Medicine Hat and lost 5-1 to Lethbridge to end their season. Jaeden Norton collected the only tally for the Vikings. Hanna Boyce and Sydee Dallyn of the Vikings made the women’s All-conference teams.
Finding common ground tour By Lori Larsen
Battle River Watershed Alliance hosted the launch of the Finding Common Ground 2.0 Tour, a two-day bus tour aimed at exploring local energy options and opportunities, on Oct. 23 and 24. By recruiting a number of energy ambassadors in and around the Battle River/Sounding Creek watersheds, the objective of the tour was to broaden awareness and heighten curiosity with attendees on a variety of efficient options. Through visiting different sites and listening to the remarks and presentations of the people in the energy sector, attendees gained first hand experience in energy production, distributions and efficient usage. The tour began on Oct. 23, at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre in Camrose with a presentation on Energy in our Communities by Lars Hallstrom, director, Alberta Centre for Sustainable Rural Communities. After the presentation attendees had the opportunity to tour the Lougheed Centre, facilitated by Lougheed general manager Nick Beach, who explained the solar array system and the buildings efficiency and sustainability features. Keynote speaker Calgary author Chris Turner gave an informative and inspiring presentation on Alberta’s Place in the Global Energy Transition. Turner was certain that Alberta has huge potential to continue as an energy leader but must keep up with the transition to more renewable energy. In the afternoon the tour continued to the Paintearth Mine, operated by Westmoreland and a visit to the ATCO Battle River Generating Station where guests learned about the coal mining operation and the plant’s conversion to natural gas. The tour travelled south to Halkirk for a visit at the Capital Power Wind Farm where ambassadors were able to go into a wind turbine and learn about how wind is adding power to the grid and the future of wind in Alberta. The next day of the tour, Oct. 24, began at Lacombe Composite High school for a presentation by keynote speaker David Dodge on Green Energy Futures and energy efficiency success stories.
Guests were then toured by students in the Ecovision club around the school’s energy and agricultural projects, including solar panels, the passive solar geodesic dome and the aquaponics system. “Guests said that it was inspiring to see how these teenagers were working to address climate change, and increase their schools learning opportunities,” said BRWA education and outreach coordinator Nathalie Olson. In the afternoon the tour continued in Maskwacis, where council member Desmond Bull spoke on the Louis Bull Nation’s solar projects and training initiative. Participants were also given an opportunity to complete an Energy Savings workshop to help determine methods of saving energy costs. Back in Camrose area, a visit to a straw bale home demonstrated how that family had increased their own efficiency, reducing their power and heat demands and created a cozy home. The tour wrapped up with a presentation from the Alberta Narratives project on how to have good conversations on hard topics such as our energy needs and climate change. “Participants had exclusive behind the scenes access to all types of energy projects and heard from guest speakers on energy production, distribution, and efficiencies,” said Olson. “Along with the renewable and conventional energy projects, they learned about the social and environmental challenges and opportunities in the watershed.” Besides learning valuable information on energy costs, one of the other goals of the tour was to develop ambassadors of energy from diverse personal and professional background who will assist, through their newly gained knowledge and understanding, with building awareness of actions to improve the sustainability of all our watersheds. The ambassadors will now be presenting their experience to members of the community. Olson concluded that “We know it is hard to have these conversations–which is exactly why we need to have them.”

Family violence prevention month building awareness Continued from page 7
Help is never more than a phone call or visit away. “Knowing that there is help in our community for men, women and children who are impacted by family violence and abuse is so important,” remarked Family Violence Action Society program director Sheralyn Dobos. “People often become extremely isolated in these situations and feel alone in their despair. It doesn’t have to be like that.” In defining the behaviours associated with family violence they include: physical, verbal, emotional, financial and sexual abuse, neglect, stalking or being kept from seeing other people or forced to stay in one place. “The term “family violence” too often leaves people who experience devastating non-physical forms of abuse, feeling like they have nowhere to turn for help,” added Dobos. “These can be equally devastating, but do not leave tell-tale bruises on the outside. The scars and raw wounds from these types of abuse are hidden deep within those
who experience them. To those who identify with these insidious forms of abuse, I encourage them to reach out for support from our organization, or any of several others in our community and province.” For more information on Family Violence Action Society visit the website at http://camrosefcss.ca/ funded-programs/familyviolence-action-society/. According to the government of Alberta website, Alberta has the third highest rate of self-reported spousal violence among Canadian provinces. For more information on the Camrose Women’s Shelter, visit the website at camrosewomenshelter.org or if you or someone you know requires assistance, telephone 780-672-1035 or toll free 1-877-672-1010 or email at crisiswork@camrosewomenshelter.org. Awareness and prevention can stop the cycle to end family violence and work towards building healthier relationships.
Murray Green, Camrose Booster City of Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer and Camrose County Reeve Cindy Trautman sign a declaration to name November Family Violence Prevention Month, to create awareness for people to learn where to turn. Witnessing the signing is Camrose Women’s Shelter outreach coordinator Leslie Lindballe, Camrose Women’s Shelter outreach child and youth care coordinator Jan Turnbull, Family Violence Action Society director Sheralyn Dobos, Camrose Police Service Crime Prevention and Community Relations Constable Kelly Bauer and Camrose and District Victim Services program manager Macki Rumak.

The Orignial Chu raps for Vikings By Lori Larsen
If you happened to be at the home opening game of the University of Alberta Augustana Campus Vikings men’s basketball on Friday, Oct. 25, you may have heard something new, something exciting, something unique to this team–their very own original full lyrical song written and performed by Edmonton-based rapper The Original Chu, produced by Chu the Producer. Augustana Viking men’s basketball coach Dave Drabiuk was excited to share the news and how it came about that the Vikings “scored” such an amazing distinction. “Every year, we go over what we want to do for warm up,” said Drabiuk. “What playlists we want to use. Last year, at an away game, we had the host team ask if we have a song we play during our player introduction.” It was that inquiry that had Dave’s wheels spinning. The team hadn’t really settled on a particular song, so Dave thought it would be especially amazing if the team could have their very own song. “Because I have known Chu (The Original Chu) for quite a while in many walks of his life, I decided to contact him. I knew he is an awardwinning producer and artist and he is local to Edmonton and has a connection to our basketball league. I listen to his music and think he is a good artist.” The fit seemed perfect, all Dave had to do was initiate the conversation and see if Chu would be interested in putting together a song, specific to the team, for their introduction during games. “He (Chu) is actually a big basketball fan. He coached in our league. I contacted him and asked him if this would be a project he would be interested in and how much it would cost. I was completely naive.” Chu took only a day to think about the proposition, contacting Dave the next day saying he was not only interested in doing the project, but already had a few ideas brewing adding a very agreeable cost. Dave sent Chu some of the team propaganda including some thoughts on the team’s mission, goal and strategies as such. “Chu started putting things together and it evolved very quickly.”
“The campus was on board right from the beginning,” noted Dave, adding that after receiving approval from the University of Alberta, the song, in part or in it’s entirety, can be used however the Augustana Viking men’s basketball deems fit for their propaganda, while remaining the property of Chu. Chu, the artist, goes by the name The Original Chu and Chu The Producer for songs that he writes and produces for other people. The Vikings song is performed under the name The Original Chu. Chu’s love for music and basketball began when he was a child. “I pursued both throughout high school and was in a hip-hop/R&B group until one day, I was forced to make a decision,” explained Chu. “The group was slated for an opening spot for The Fresh Prince of Bel Air (starring Will Smith) and I had a basketball tournament that weekend. “I was the team captain of the basketball team and took that responsibility very serious, but I also loved music. In that decision, I thought about the longterm ramifications and knew that I wanted to go to college and also play college basketball.” Chu made the difficult decision to leave the group. “Since leaving the group, the members all moved to Vancouver and then to Los Angeles and have had successful careers in acting and music working with and alongside the likes of Pink, Babyface, Jamie Foxx, Jason Derulo and Jay Pharoah.” The decision to remain with the basketball team may have been difficult, but it paid off for Chu in other ways as his life progressed. “I went to school, received my bachelor of physical education, played four years of college basketball, and coached in the ACAC for nine years with MacEwan and NAIT and one year as an assistant with the Golden Bears of Alberta, winning gold, silver and bronze medals at the national championships to go along with several provincial medals.” After an over 20-year hiatus, Chu returned to music, pouring everything Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster he had into his newfound The Augustana Vikings men’s basketball team get moving during a success. “I perform as a warm up to their own original song written and performed by The solo artist, but my main Original Chu and produced by Chu the Producer. joy comes from producing
and writing for other singers and rappers. I won the People’s Choice Award at the Edmonton Music Awards in 2017 for my single, titled “Crystal Ball” which tackles the subject of mental health. I later teamed with the Canadian Mental Health Association to create an awareness video.” Happy to work in collaboration with Dave Drabiuk on a team song, Chu combined his knowledge of basketball and his gift for music to come up with the Vikings song. “When coach Drabiuk approached me with the idea, I was humbled. We used to battle each other on the court as coaching rivals during my time at NAIT, and since transitioning to music, he has become a huge supporter of my goals and passion,” said Chu. “I was honoured to be asked and felt that with my background in ACAC basketball, I could give a good effort in capturing the passion and sacrifice that is required to be successful in this league.” And capturing that passion, the will to give it their all and come out the victors was exactly what the song and lyrics do. Anybody walk in the valley of the Vikings. Ready for a fight, kid–you gonna get it. Under these lights–coming out like lighting. It’s our night we gonna win forget it. (Reproduced in part with permission from The Original Chu.) “Coach Drabiuk and I communicated back and forth a fair bit and I was essentially interviewing him to get a feel for the team, the team’s history and the culture of the program,” said Chu, on how he chose the lyrics. “He was also helpful in providing the team’s mantra and philosophy, so I tried to build the lyrics around those discussions while infusing bits of my coaching experience into the mix.” This isn’t the first time Chu has written a song directly related to sport. “I wrote a song called ‘Havoc’ (Edmonton Oilers playoff rally song 2017). It was a similar concept, but a little less intimate as I was writing from a more outside perspective without the ability to interview the head of the program.” Combining the two genres (music and sport) is something Chu feels can have great impact on community. “One of my college professors always used to say that sport is a microcosm of society and I truly believe that. Sport teaches so many lessons that you can carry through life. The good, the bad, the ugly. They are all present in sport. Victory. Defeat. Joy. Pain. Teamwork. Selflessness. Sacrifice. Love. Hate. It’s important to learn to experience all of those (good or bad) and navigate through them as young people to help us as we mature through our lives.” As for the impact the song has on the team and the community as a whole for that matter, both Dave and Chu agree that it is all part in parcel in building morale and creating a greater sense of belonging. “I remember as a player and coach, the teams typically gravitated to certain songs each year and those songs had nothing specifically to do with them. To have a song written for and about you is special,” Chu said. Dave said it definitely puts a spike in the team morale. “The team is very excited about it. They didn’t want to hear it until home game opening night so they could share in the excitement with the fans and rest of the community. “It’s one more piece of the feeling of belonging, something we have that other schools don’t. In fact, I had one father who told me (more or less in jest) it is a great recruiting tool.” All songs released by The Original Chu/Chu The Producer are available on all platforms such as Spotify and iTunes/Apple Music, including ‘Havoc’, the award-winning Crystal Ball and Vikings (set for global release on Nov. 8). The song will ring loud and clear during the ACAC Men’s Basketball Championships being hosted by Augustana in Camrose in March 2020. Take some time out to come out and cheer on the home team and sing a few bars of their very own song.

Savour an Italian Christmas
By Murray Green
Last year, the Camrose County’s long table food celebration was such a major hit with local food venders that the Bailey Theatre decided to build on that success with an Italian Christmas event, Nov. 16. “We had a lot of people volunteering a lot of hours to raise funds last fall. I wanted to simplify the fundraising event with less organization, but still have good food. I thought of a spaghetti dinner with a few live and silent auctions to make it a casual event,” said organizer and Bailey board member David Roth. “After Remembrance Day is over, I thought about making the Bailey Theatre a stop for Christmas with decorations and a holiday spirit. The Italian Christmas event will start the holiday season. We will have an evening of good food, a little wine, some music from Augustana solo artists and just a few auction items.” A portion of each ticket sold goes to paying for the meal and the rest goes towards fundraising for

Hauser honoured as the 2019 Community Builder By Murray Green
Rob Hauser has been a pillar in this community for a long time. He has made many contributions to Camrose with his generosity and giving. The Battle River Community Foundation honoured Rob, owner-operator of Hauser Home Hardware Building Centre, as the Community Builder of the year last month at the Norsemen Inn. Community members tributed Rob for making Camrose a better place. “I have known Rob for quite
knowledge and advice to the table,” she added. Rob also helps with fundraising by bowling in the annual Bowl-a-thon. Family, friends and guests gathered for an evening of sharing stories about him and all he has done to help make Camrose one of the best communities in which to work and live. “I moved from Camrose, with my mother, to BC when I was 15 and we left Rob behind to look after the house and start his life here. He is my

a few years. Centra Cam needed a lot of supplies and Ron helped us get what we needed. In 1993, he made the decision to hire one of the clients we served. He hired David for the next 21 years. He proudly wore his red shirt and name tag. When David’s retirement became a reality, the connection with Hauser Home Hardware did not end. Rob continued to invite him over, just to keep in touch. Rob didn’t hesitate to hire again (another client),” said Roxanna Skjonsberg, executive director of the Centra Cam Vocational Training Association. “Kyle joined the team five years ago. He is proud to be part of that team. I’m not sure what is more important to him, having a job with a pay cheque or the red shirt and name tag. In 2006, Rob joined the board of directors and it has only made a positive impact to our association. Rob brings so much
hardest working brother– because he is the only other one still working,” said Kelly Hauser, Rob’s brother, with a laugh. “He is a good business owner, friend, brother and father. Rob always had common sense and was good with his hands. I remember when we were seven or eight, we explored the woods. We lived on the banks of Mirror Lake filled with hiding spots and trails. Rob would bring cardboard, a bunch of lumber and nails and build a fort. He would be the one sticking firecrackers into anything, such as vegetables in the garden. He was the youngest person to be an assistant produce manager at Co-op in his teens. Obviously, they didn’t know about the firecrackers,” continued Kelly. “We left him on his own and he has come a long way. He worked to become an electrician, then a business owner and now a community builder. Thanks for being a great person.”
Kelly and Rob Hauser
In 1963, when Rob was three years old, his parents Mary and Ervin Hauser, along with their six children, moved to Camrose from Strome. His father was killed in an industrial accident when Rob was 11 years old. Even though money was scarce, his mother still managed to keep the children involved and he credits a generous community for providing the means to do just that. “Rob understands volunteering. He gives his efforts, volunteers and puts money behind projects because it is the right thing to do,” said Garry Zetsen, a former employer of Rob’s and a business colleague. “Rob doesn’t want to be recognized, but it is highly deserved. He doesn’t get half the recognition that he does deserve. He is so humble that he doesn’t think he should be up here. Rob started working for Zetsen Homes in the early 1980s. He understands value. If I paid him for eight hours, he would make sure he worked for eight hours and 10 minutes or so. He made sure I got the value for his pay,” said Garry. “He has carried that into his business. This has happened more than once, he would correct statements. He would phone and look at invoices and suggest changes. It is one thing to check an item that we asked for, but he would check on prices of things we didn’t ask for. If we found a posting error or price error, we would take it back to Rob. As you would expect, the corrections were made instantaneously and without question. But what was really impressive was that; and I haven’t met another businessman that digs this far back, he would check pricing and let us know of a mistake that we didn’t find and corrected it and gave us credit. For him to take the time and effort and give credit back for something we didn’t catch is something, it really speaks of his character that is not often found in a lot of people.” Rob helped raise a son and daughter and stepdaughter Nicole, who talked about her stepdad. “His kind, caring nature combined with his experience made him the go-to guy for advice. He has taught me so much and he is my role model. He inspires me daily and I wouldn’t be the person I am today without his guidance,” said Nicole. “Thanks for everything you do for me and the community.” Rob responded to the praise. “I am humbled by the attendance tonight. When Blain (Fowler) of Battle River Community Foundation came to see me

in my office last June, he explained about the Foundation. He was there to ask me who would fit these credentials. He told me that the board had selected me. He explained that it wasn’t about me, but about help-

ing the community,” said Rob. “I was fortunate to grow up in Camrose. Today, I look at the community and see how it has grown. That needs of the community grow with it. We are fortunate to have an organization like the Battle River Community Foundation that recognizes these needs. It is about individuals doing what it takes to make a difference. I tell my children to be thankful for what they have. And, what you give back will be tenfold. This night feels like tenfold for me.” Funds raised from the
Beef fundraiser netted another $14,300 for the Foundation that gives to the community. Hauser’s Community Builders’ night was the 15th of the 16 such events the BRCF has held. The events have raised $1,090,346. Of that amount, $335,224 has been raised in rural areas. Royal Canadian Mint introduces poppy shaped coin By Murray Green
The Royal Canadian Mint has crafted a poppyshaped silver coin for this fall. The $10 fine silver Remembrance Day coin features multi-layered engraving and colouring to give the poppy depth and airiness. This latest
innovation adds to the long list of coins issued by the Mint in support of Canada’s annual Remembrance tradition. In another creative tribute to Canada’s fallen soldiers, a $20 fine silver Lest We Forget coin features a Murano glass poppy crowning an engraved
field of poppies, overlaid by a cross baring the timeless inscription. Both of these coins are now available. The $50 fine silver The Centennial Flame of Canada coin has three ounces of pure silver and features the Parliament Hill monument that commemorates each Canadian province
