Most kids have a long list of things they would love to have as gifts for Christmas. In fact, many young people do get multiple gifts at this special time of year. Unfortunately, the reality is that there are many youth in our community who will not receive any gifts at all this year due to a variety of circumstances – economic reasons, challenging economy, dysfunctional family situation, lifestyle choices, addictions, etc.
KINETTES’ ANNUAL
Toy & Gift Drive It is the goal of the Camrose Kinette Club to ensure that every child receive at least one gift to open and cherish this Christmas. Working with the Camrose Fire Department and the Camrose Kodiaks, the Kinettes will set up on
Saturday, November 30, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the service road beside Camrose Registry to collect new unwrapped gifts, cash and gift cards for youth. Most required are items for teenagers. Gift ideas include gift certificates for movies and snacks, restaurants, movie passes, Kodiak tickets, pocket novels, soccer balls, crazy carpets, handheld video games, family board games, hygiene kits, art sets, puzzles and pyjamas. The Kinettes work with Camrose Neighbor Aid Center on a highly confidential basis to allocate gifts to those who are struggling to make ends meet.

We’re all brainwashed – in a good way!
Who knew? We are literally having our brains washed every night. Not sure how the article popped up on my screen: Mesmerizing Video Shows Waves of Spinal Fluid Washing Over the Brain During Sleep by David Nield. Boston University scientists who study the brain say that every night while we sleep, waves of cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) flow through our brains, clearing out any toxins that shouldn’t be building up inside our heads. “These CSF waves look to be washing out unnecessary proteins and other redundant debris,” the article says. Waste removal from our brains? It tickled me to know. ***
We already know all kinds of useful things happen while we sleep. Our bodies release hormones that help repair cells and build tissue. Blood pressure drops, our muscles relax, our immune system is strengthened. Other hormones are released that can balance our appetite (when we’re sleep deprived we may feel the need to eat more). Besides the physical benefits of sleep are mental and emotional benefits. In some phases of sleep, our brains reinforce learning. When we’re well rested, we’re better at problem solving, more creative, more productive and feel happier. Over the years, I’ve read about all those things. Plus, I’ve certainly noticed the difference between being well rested and being sleep deprived. You’ve probably noticed that too. But brainwashed? Literally, washing out the brain? This was new to me. I read about this “brainwashing” phenomenon on a day when I was sleep deprived and knew I’d made some errors because of it. The first error was being sleep deprived at all. In this phase of my life, with fewer responsibilities and more unstructured time, I am almost never sleep deprived. I seldom have any reason to set an alarm and can sleep until I wake up. But, for the first time in a very long time, I ignored all the signs and all that I know and went to bed very late. I had to be jarred awake by an alarm after only a few hours’ sleep in order to get to an event. A setup for errors. It was bad enough to make errors. Worse because there was an audience. (Ack! Errors in public!) I wasn’t feeling all that great about the day. I also didn’t want to make it worse by belabouring it. I wanted just to face it, deal with it and move on. And, still being sleep deprived, wasn’t sure I could do that. Then I read the article about how, every night when we sleep, fluid washes out any leftover debris in our brains. Hah! Leftover bad feelings might certainly qualify as debris in my brain. I imagined making a request (I’m not sure to whom or to what) that “clearing debris in my brain” might please include clearing away dark thoughts about events of the day. And while I was at it, I mentioned a few others things that I’d be happy to have cleared out of my brain. I have no idea if thinking those thoughts made any difference to the cerebro-spinal fluid as it sloshed through my brain that night. But the ridiculousness and deliciousness of the possibility made me laugh and that probably cleared a little mental debris. Back to the article. The scientists already knew the part about the cerebro-spinal fluid washing the brain while we sleep. What excited them was a phenomenon they noticed for the first time – that the brainwashing spinal fluid pulses rhythmically. They even created a short video to show the process in action (it’s fun to watch). They could see that the pulsing of this fluid is in sync with other brainwaves and with blood flow. They could see possibilities for how this knowledge could help with some diseases. I wish them well with all of that. Meanwhile, I’m having fun specifying what kind of mental debris I’d be happy to have brainwashed away. ***

I am looking for information about Dan Crowley. The Camrose Booster ran an article Dec. 18, 2018: Remembering Rosehaven 71 years later. Dan Crowley was my uncle. I finally found his tombstone in the Camrose Cemetery. His wife was my aunt and godmother: Yvette (Drouin) Crowley. They had two daughters: Eileen (Rosenfeldt) and Marie (McCrimmon). I am working on my family tree. I would sure appreciate if someone in Camrose has more information on Uncle Dan and Eileen and Marie to share. An old schoolmate of Eileen’s (Eva Fuhrmann Clegg) in Camrose, is looking to re-connect with Eileen. Eileen became a lab technician and later a computer tech, while Marie became a dietitian. Eileen lived in Medicine Hat. I have lost track of them after my aunt died. If anyone in the Camrose area or somewhere else has some information, I would be thrilled. Therese Siemers, St. Paul Rethinking wrapping
Thank you for running the article about the change in policy on wrapping paper recycling from Centra Cam. With recent focus on limiting single-use plastics such as straws and plastic bags this Christmas season seems like an excellent opportunity to reflect on if we really need gift wrap and perhaps start some new habits. Given the many alternatives available and knowledge that we will be sending all of the wrapping paper to the landfill it seems like a no-brainer. A couple of personal anecdotes to this point. I can still distinctly recall the Christmas of 1995 and the best gift of them all, the sought-after GT SnoRacer (endorsed by Brett Hull!). It got lots of use. Can I recall how it was wrapped? Absolutely not. The second anecdote is one that I married into. My in-laws have been using the same boxes to package gifts for each other for 25 years. They have become part of Christmas tradition and every year there is reminiscing about other gifts that have been given in that same Eaton’s box. All of this to say, other than a one-time aesthetic, there is really no point to single-use wrapping paper and there is often charm associated with alternatives. Wondering what you could
use instead? You’re holding it! Everyone loves to unwrap The Booster. Greg King, Camrose Common sense
Thanks to Bernie von Tettenborn for the dose of common sense in your letter on climate change. I am sure you will incur the wrath of the climate change fanatics who have little tolerance for those of us who do not drink the kool-aid of their religion, but you make several valid points. What is most disconcerting to me is the unquestioning buy-in by most of the main stream media. They love to carry stories on nearly every weather event with the “conclusion” that it has been “caused” by climate change (implying of course that humans have somehow caused it). Climate change is a fact, not a “cause” of anything, and as you point out has been occurring forever. It is amusing, however, that when there are extreme weatherrelated events that are heat related (ex. forest fires) they are immediately cited as evidence of “the effects of climate change.” However, when we have unusually cold stretches of weather, the experts are equally quick to advise us that “that’s just weather”. Now that the religion has found its new prophet in the truant schoolgirl Greta, I fear the brainwashing will only get worse, as unlike the Y2K scam, it will take another 50 years or more before this one becomes obvious to everyone. In the meantime there is a concerted effort being made to convince our younger generation that we are headed for disaster if we do not immediately address our “climate emergency”. Climate activist Steve Lee, who has no relevant academic credentials, is touring the country speaking in schools and warning students of a “possible apocalypse” if we do not stop burning fossil fuels. We need more people like you speaking out, Bernie, if we are to counter that insane rhetoric. Larry Lewsaw, Camrose Change seriously
Bernie von Tettenborn wrote a letter expressing his thoughts on climate change and I am happy he did. We should all be thinking long and hard about climate change. In his analysis, Mr. von Tettenborn got some things right, but he got some things wrong too. He is wrong when he says that
without oil we would be going back to horses. Oil and coal are just forms of stored solar energy and solar energy can be stored in other forms. He is wrong when he says that the many young people who are becoming alarmed are “influenced by the treehuggers.” In fact, they are alarmed because they are paying attention to the scientists who are studying climate, as we all should be. He is right that there has been a balance between CO2 being removed from the air by plants and CO2 being added by animals, but that balance has been thrown completely out of whack by humans burning fossil fuels. He is right that climate has always been changing. We know that from the work of climate scientists, the same scientists who tell us that the current humanproduced climate change is different, and represents the greatest threat humanity has ever faced. It’s the same researchers. If you trust them when they explain past climate, why wouldn’t you trust their current warning? Our climate is like a big snowball we have been pushing across a field and now we are pushing down a hill. The danger is that it will start to get away from us and then all hell breaks loose. Add to that the problem that there are a lot of crackpots on the internet, being paid to spread misinformation about climate. The science of climate change is complex. We need to be listening to the scientists who are actually studying climate. Listen to the 6,000 scientists of the IPCC who paint a dire picture of the consequences of not taking action now. Or the 11,000 scientists from 152 countries who jointly published a letter in the journal Bioscience a few weeks ago declaring a “global climate emergency” and warning that untold human misery will result from inaction. Or the scientists of NASA, the World Meteorological Organization, all the world’s major universities – they have all come to the same conclusions and what they have been predicting is unfolding more or less as they said it would. We will all be hearing a lot about climate change over the next decade. We should join the young people and pay attention. The world must act effectively to reverse climate change. We have no choice and for the sake of our children the world must get this right. Rob Hill, Camrose

The Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) in the United Kingdom urges everyone in England to take vitamin D supplements. According to the Vitamin D Society of Canada, Canadians should look at their own vitamin D intake levels. Much like England, Canada shares the same sunshine limitations, which means because of the northern latitude of both countries, vitamin D producing sunlight can only be captured by our skin between the months of May and October. This leaves citizens in the cold with declining vitamin D levels in the fall and winter. The downside of low vitamin D levels is that bones can become thin and brittle, because vitamin D plays an important role in regulating the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body, making it essen-
tial for bone health and more. “Without having a recommended intake in the UK, it was not possible to evaluate vitamin D status or vitamin D intakes there; but now with the decision of SACN to finally put these forward, we can see in the UK that intakes are low and status is one of the poorest,” said Dr. Susan Whiting, scientific advisor for the Vitamin D Society and professor at the University of Saskatchewan. “Both countries share similar latitudes, similar dietary habits and distribution of people of European and non-European ancestry. Modest fortification with vitamin D in Canada has prevented us from having severe vitamin D deficiency.

Remembering Remembrance By Joy Vanderwerf on behalf of the Camrose Seniors Coalition
The poppies were the only plants able to grow on the disturbed earth of the battlefields during the First and Second World Wars. Blood red poppies would grow around the bodies of the fallen. The survivors saw them. One survivor wrote a poem about it and this poem was used to inspire all of us to wear poppies every year in remembrance. It’s been a few weeks since we put our poppies away for 2019. My heritage is Dutch. My parents immigrated to Canada when they were children in the early ’50s, shortly after the Second World War. While growing up I would hear stories from what they remember from experiencing the war as children. Some of the best were stories of the Dutch resistance and when the Canadian soldiers came to The Netherlands to liberate them from enemy occupation. The Canadian soldiers were kind and good to the Dutch people and that is why so many Dutch folks chose Canada as a destination when they decided to leave the Netherlands
for their own fresh beginnings. The people of the Netherlands know that what the Canadian soldiers did for them was not done lightly or easily. They know that they were helped at great cost and sacrifice from the many people serving in the Canadian army. More than 74 years have passed since the end of this war and still they hold ceremonies of thankfulness for the Canadian army. As a person who benefitted from what the Canadians did for my parents and for their families and friends, I thank you too. Remember that there are younger Canadian soldiers and war veterans from more recent war experiences who have been injured; sometimes in ways that are almost undetectable except that their lives will never be the same as they were before their battle. Physical injury. Chemical poisoning. Mental shock and injury. Personal loss. It is important to honour and thank soldiers, it is also important that we try to support them as they seek to recreate their lives within the limits of their new reality. If you’ve known a sol-
dier their whole life and now that they’re back you’ve heard they are different people now than they were before, then don’t avoid them. Instead, try to invest some time in them, though it may be difficult. Get to know who they have become. Bring with you an attitude of acceptance so they can know that whoever they

Type 2 diabetes By Lori Larsen
This season can be tempting with all the extra goodies so Alberta Health Services (AHS) encourages people to be mindful of their diets especially those diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Rates of Type 2 diabetes are rising faster in Alberta than anywhere else in Canada. More than 300,000 Albertans have the disease. AHS recommends the following tips for finding out about Type 2 diabetes early—and learning how to live well with a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. Know signs
Common signs include frequent urination, thirst and/or hunger. Other signs include weight loss, a dry mouth, urinary tract infections, blurry vision and numbness or tingling in fingers and toes. Experts recommend an annual check for elevated blood sugar after age 40, when the risk of developing diabetes rises. Gauge risk
Older people with a family history of the disease and/or non-Caucasian roots are at higher risk of having Type 2 diabetes. So are women who had gestational diabetes while pregnant. Other risks include being overweight, obese and/or inactive. Live healthy
Find meal planning, exercise and medication that work for you. The Alberta Healthy Living Program, Primary Care Networks, your pharmacist
and your family doctor can assist. Set SMART goals— specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timely. Experts recommend 30 minutes of exercise at least five days a week, plus resistance exercise two to three times a week. Eat regularly spaced, balanced meals with lots of vegetables and fibre, some protein and healthy fat, complex carbohydrates and very little added sugar. Avoid fruit juice, pop and sport drinks. If you do overindulge on a special occasion then counteract it by doing some exercise, such as walking. Monitor health
Besides blood sugar, watch for elevated blood pressure, escalating anxiety, reduced kidney function, increased cholesterol and nerve damage in eyes

Leaving a Legacy: Alfred Nobel and The Nobel Prizes
As we journey through life, it is natural to think about what we will eventually leave behind. What will our legacies be? For some it will be financial security for loved ones or donations to charitable organizations. Others will pass on family heirlooms, traditions or stories and many will have made lasting impacts through their professional lives. As Dec. 10 approachIngrid Urberg, es—the anniversary of the Scandinavian Studies, death of the Swede Alfred University of Alberta Nobel in 1896—we observe Augustana Campus his impactful legacy as the six prizes funded by his estate are awarded in Sweden and Norway to scientists, authors, economists and activists from around the world. Alfred Nobel was a creative individual who was a lifelong student with broad interests ranging from literature, languages and philosophy to chemistry and engineering, and contemporary social and political issues. Nobel was best-known in his day for his scientific work as a chemist and industrialist, as well as his over 350 patents, including one for dynamite. These activities and interests, along with his fluency in five languages, allowed him not only to live in several European countries and travel widely, but also to amass great monetary wealth. Though the hard-working and reserved Nobel was a generous contributor to scientific and humanitarian causes while alive, he apparently never shared his plans to establish a trust to fund international awards. These annual awards were designated for those who make significant discoveries, improvements and inventions in the areas of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, as well as prizes for outstanding contributions in the areas of literature and peace. Nobel’s family, friends and other contemporaries only became aware of his wish to leave this legacy when his will was read after his death in 1896. When one looks at the wide-ranging work and legacies of the over 900 individuals and nearly 30 organizations which have been awarded Nobel Prizes since 1901, it is clear that their research and discoveries have impacted countless lives across the globe. All of us have been influenced in ways—directly and/or indirectly—by the contributions of scientists such as Canadian Frederick Banting (co-recipient of the 1923 prize in physiology or medicine for the discovery of insulin) and Canadian Donna Strickland (2018 co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in physics for her work on pulsed lasers), writers such as T.S. Eliot, Toni Morrison, Bob Dylan and Alice Munro, as well as the ideas, leadership and actions of Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela and Malala Yousafza, to name but a few. It is noteworthy that several of the prizes have been granted jointly over the years to those who have engaged in collaborative research and peace efforts, demonstrating the value of cooperating within and between disciplines and across national borders. There have, however, been plenty of controversies surrounding both the Nobel Prize selection processes and the recipients of a number of the Nobel Literature and Peace Prizes. Nobel was rather pessimistic about the ability of people and nations to get along, and while his trust is used to profile those who work to better the human condition, he likely would not have been surprised by the challenges involved with selecting the most deserving recipients. The diversity of those receiving the awards has gradually increased, with his year’s laureates, coming from Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. Nobel himself was adamant that the nationality of recipients should not play a role in the selection process and would likely be pleased with the gradual increase in geographic diversity of the prize recipients. Join Drs. James Kariuki, Gerhard Lotz, Anne McIntosh, and Ingrid Urberg on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at noon as they host a Lunch and Learn in the Roger Epp Conference Room at Augustana about this year’s winners of the Nobel Chemistry, Peace, and Physics Prizes. A lunch is available upon registration. For more information, contact rsvp.augustana@ualberta.ca or 780-679-1626.
High School Football Trojans win last playoff game By Murray Green
The École Camrose Composite High School Trojans football team rallied to win the last game of the playoff season. Camrose lost a close game to Stettler at the end of the regular season to give them fourth place. They went to Sylvan Lake to play the number one Sylvan Lake Lakers and lost. Stettler was in second and defeated third place Wetaskiwin in the semifinals. This set up a rematch with Wetaskiwin in the third against fourth game on Nov. 2. “Wetaskiwin went up 28-0 on us in the first half. With a little over four minutes in the second quarter, we marched the field and scored on a run by Thaden Wolfe,” said Trojans’ coach Adam Belanger. “We missed the point after. We recovered the kickoff and took the ball down and scored in the last seconds of the first half on a pass from Wyatt Matson to Kieran Sherman. With a two-point conversion run in by Thaden, it was 28-14 to finish the half.” The Camrose defense held Wetaskiwin off the scoreboard the entire second half. “We scored early in the third quarter with a run by Tristan Kennedy to close the gap to 28-20. At the end of the third, Brock Dalke scooped up a botched snap by Wetaskiwin and ran the ball in for the touchdown. Thaden caught a pass from Wyatt for the two-point conversion to tie it up 28-28. “It was back and forth for the remainder of the fourth quarter, but the Trojans managed to get the ball back and march the field and Thaden scored a touchdown with eight seconds left in the game. However, it was called back on a penalty, so we lined up to punt the ball through the end zone for the winning point with no time on the clock. The snap was a little off, but our punter Noah Segal did a great job getting the ball off. The Wetaskiwin returner caught the ball in the end zone, but was swarmed by our cover team and we scored to win the game 29-28 and brought the Highway 13 cup back to Camrose where it belongs,” explained coach Belanger. The Trojans team awards banquet is set for Wednesday, Dec. 4 at ÉCCHS.

Ryder delivers special Christmas concert By Murray Green
Serena Ryder will be singing about Christmas Kisses at her concert on Dec. 6 in the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre at 7:30 p.m. Ryder, a six-time Juno Award winner and multiplatinum singer-songwriter, has released the official music video for “Christmas Song” that she will sing in Camrose. “Christmas Song” appears on Ryder’s 2018 holiday album, Christmas Kisses, which was
ranked number five by Rolling Stone on their 50 New Christmas Albums, reviewed list. Ryder kicked off The Christmas Kisses 2019 Tour in Vancouver on Nov. 23. “I am so excited to get back on the road and tour the Christmas Kisses record,” Ryder said. “The show will consist of mainly songs from Christmas Kisses sprinkled with a bunch of other songs of mine you know and love. I can’t wait to see everyone out there.” Ryder’s first holiday
album was produced by Canadian Music Hall of Fame Inductee Bob Ezrin (Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd). On collaborating with Ryder on her first holiday album, Ezrin said, “Serena is so versatile and has such a command of her instrument that anything is possible with her. So, we picked what we thought would be the most elegant approach to Christmas classics–one that shone the brightest light on the songs themselves and on her magnificent voice.”
She infused her love of jazz into holiday classics that celebrate the spirit of the holidays. “Jazz music has always been one of my biggest vocal influencers,” said Ryder. “When I was a young girl, I would spend hours upon hours locked away in my room listening and singing to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simon and Chet Baker. It’s been a dream of mine to be able to sing an entire album in this style and also a dream to be able to embrace the spirit of Christmas in a
genuinely joyful way. I had the time of my life singing these classic songs in the style of my greatest influencers and in the company of my best friends. I hope the world feels the love we all put into this record.” Her album also features traditional hits such as “Let It Snow”, “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town”, “Blue Christmas”, “I’ll Be Home For Christmas”, “Jingle Bell Rock”, “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” and “Santa Baby.”

The last time John McDermott was in Camrose, he treated us to some classic hits. This time, the Canadian tenor will be delivering holiday cheer during his stop at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Sunday Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. As is John’s tradition, he will sing holiday favourites, songs from his illustrious musical career, and tasteful Remembrance tributes. John is an international recording star known as much for his successful musical career as for his commitment to veterans’ causes. He has been nominated for a number of Juno awards and received the US Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s Bob Hope Award for his support for veterans’ causes. Current albums from John include An Evening with John McDermott Volume 2 and John McDermott a Family Christmas with special guests Dala. His first album, Danny Boy, garnered strong sales in the USA and Canada, and reached number one in New Zealand. This success, won through a tireless touring schedule, led to his participation in the PBS phenomenon, The Irish Tenors. John has gone on to record numerous albums, including Journeys. This extremely moving album includes songs such as “The Dreamer” and “The Gift of Years”, both written by renowned songwriter Eric Bogle. Proceeds of the sales went to McDermott House Canada, a charity that John created. McDermott House Canada is a project close to John’s heart. “Every day the men and women who serve our country, and the police, firefighters and first responders who serve our communities put their lives on the line and themselves in harm’s way. When asked why, they simply say: ‘It’s what we do.’ They serve freely and willingly, asking for very little in return,” said McDermott.

This dinner and entertainment variety show features music from Motown, sixties girl groups, and the best music from the ’50s and ’60s. Camrose Association For Community Living
Teddy Roy, Sean Watts and Randy Bailer of Punch Drunk.
Punch Drunk Cabaret will be releasing its live album at the Bailey Theatre on Friday, Dec. 6 with a concert beginning at 8 p.m. The award winning band is a local favourite. Punch Drunk Cabaret’s first ever Live album will be on limited edition vinyl. The band recorded the New Year’s Eve concert in Camrose and those songs were in the mix for choosing renditions for the Live album. If you attended that concert, you could be part of a sound track. “This is something exciting for us because we have never done it before. It is a vinyl only release, so that is exciting as well. We always wanted to have one, but didn’t get around to until now,” said Randy Bailer, lead singer of the band. “We always talk about how important audiences are to our shows. Now we have made good on that because the audience is truly incorporated into our Live album.” Over the past two years, the band has recorded every performance they have given. Band members sifted through the songs and selected some of the best renditions to form the new album. “This album is a best or a greatest hits list of the 10 songs that our fans enjoy the most and are staples of our live show,” explained Randy. “They were all recorded in Alberta, but I’m not sure which songs came from a certain concert. I just know
some songs played in Camrose were in the pool of songs to choose from. Our drummer Sean Watts just started taping the concerts and they were used as a learning tool, just like sports teams go through film,” he added. “We wanted to share that with the public. We wanted to have some album release parties at the venues where the songs were recorded.” Bassist and guitarist Teddy Roy (Michaylow), formerly of the Boom Chucka Boys from Sylvan Lake was added to the bands line-up to give the it even more energy on stage. “I joke that Teddy is more famous than us, because of how popular they were in the country market. When Terry left the band (Grant) to start his own project, Teddy was the first guy we called. We decided to start at the top of our list and work down and fortunately, he came on board. It was a seamless transition and business as usual.” Teddy is both a standup and regular bass player. “That is something we were interested in when we first started, but it didn’t fit at that time. It has changed our style a little to suit our rockabilly sound. We always want to create the most entertaining show that we can.” The Live album has perfect timing for the band as they plan on heading into the recording studio this winter for a new album next May.

It’s been 10 years since the Ennis Sisters launched a Christmas show. They will be returning to the Bailey Theatre for a Sunday, Dec. 8 starting at 2 p.m. Newfoundland’s Ennis Sisters have been such a big hit the last three December’s, they agreed to come back once again. Maureen, Karen and Teresa combine original songs, holiday classics, humorous recitations, and Irish step-dancing to create an exciting evening that will ignite your true holiday spirit. “The first five years we did all of our shows in Newfoundland. We were getting requests from other parts of the country asking for the Christmas show, so we decided to take it off the island,” said Teresa Ennis. “To be able to take our tour off the island, and spread our music to other parts of the country and see new faces is exciting in the magical time of the year.” This show has become a Christmas tradition in Camrose for so many and it’s one you won’t want to miss. “We love singing Christmas songs. It was a big part of us growing up, even just around the house. It is going to be a really fun show with step-dancing, our original Christmas tunes as well as some classics. It is a really good family show. There is something for everyone,” added Teresa. The sisters grew up singing in church and have since turned it into a 20-year career with several albums. “The three of us are a harmony focused group. We will have a percussionist and a multiinstrumentist member with us and some of us play Celtic instruments.” “We love performing Christmas songs and we have two Christmas albums out. People are going to hear some different songs with that east coast Celtic flair. We also tell a lot of stories growing up as sisters and what Christmas means to us,” explained Teresa. “It’s going to be exciting to play at the Bailey again. You get such a rush playing in these older venues. I’m looking forward to it,” said Teresa.

X-Bolt Medallion Gloss, high-grade walnut. Rosewood e end cap. Polished blued cap steel. Detachable rotary magazine. Short throw bolt. Adjustable trigger. This is the rifle you aspire to. You don’t want to be embarrassed with a sub-par rifle on any hunt. And perhaps this is the year you need to upgrade your hunting rifle. Ensuring long-range accuracy is the totally free-floated barrel and Feather Trigger System, two of the most critical components of any high-powered hunting rifle. Accuracy components are the key. As rounds feed from the detachable box magazine the bullet aligns straight with the chamber. This way, cartridges push directly in-line with the bore – sure, simple and secure – to protect bullet points and accuracy. And it’s no ordinary magazine – it’s a compact Rotary magazine design that is as convenient as it is efficient. Details matter. A durable gloss finish provides protection and enhances the natural beauty of the hardwood. The high-grade Walnut stock with detailed checkering provides classic good looks. Rosewood caps on the fore-end and grip offer additional elegance. Durable polished blued steel for a striking appearance.

Country Thunder Music takes over Big Valley Jamboree By Murray Green
Next year’s edition of the Big Valley Jamboree, July 30 to Aug. 2, will be produced by Country Thunder Music Festivals at the Camrose Regional Exhibition. Cou ntr y T hu nder Music Festivals has entered into an exciting new partnership with the Camrose Regional Exhibition and fans of BVJ stand to be the beneficiaries. “We are thrilled to be able to align our team and resources with this iconic brand,” said Country Thunder Music Festivals CEO, Troy Vollhoffer. “Big Valley Jamboree has a 28-year history in Camrose and we certainly look forward to continuing that legacy for the next 28 years.” The CRE has taken the financial risk out of holding the event by renting the grounds to Country Thunder Music. “We have been dealing with this decision all year. What people may not realize is that BVJ has lost money for the last three years. We were dangerously close to either finding a partner or shutting it down. Financially, we can’t keep sustaining one event. We weren’t doing anything (programming of other events) because we had to cover those costs,” said CRE executive director Dianne Kohler. With new partners, the
BVJ isn’t going anywhere. “We entered into a 10-year agreement, so we will still have the event. In fact, we will be partnering on some other projects,” added Dianne. “It’s not uncommon, a lot of festivals are going through this.” At the beginning of October, the CRE had some decisions to make. “We were starting to think this one (2020) would be the last one. Then we received a call. I met with Country Thunder last year just to do an introductory thing, so I knew them and talked about the challenges we had. I wanted to know what was successful for them, so we could turn this around. The call came out of the blue and said would you be interested,” explained Dianne. “This takes all of the financial risk away from the CRE. Troy has been with the festival since day one. He knows more people in Camrose than I do. He is excited to take this over and keep the traditions alive.” Country Thunder Music stages seven major festivals, so it is easier for them to offer package deals to artists to attract them to tours instead of a one-off concert. The 2020 BVJ artist announcements include Eric Church, Dierks Bentley, Dallas Smith, Dustin Lynch, Chris Janson, Dean Brody, Lauren Alaina,
Selina gave four main reasons for her ongoing support: 1. The fund will do good work in the family’s name in this community, forever. 2. Contributions to the fund are topped up each year by the change in the cost of living for the Province of Alberta in the previous year, preserving their value. Grants from the fund are made from investment earnings so the principal remains untouched. Over the years, accumulated grants will ultimately exceed the amounts donated to the fund. 3. Donors may establish “Donor Advised” funds if they wish to

suggest recipients for annual grants from their endowment funds. These grants can support many local charitable organizations.
4. The ease of adding to a fund once it has been established. Selina went on to say, “My biggest motivation for contributing, is knowing that our donations today will grow and continue to support our community forever. The importance of the BRCF cannot be overstated in achieving this goal.” That’s why those involved with the Foundation are fond of saying, “Helping YOU make good things happen, forever.” The Battle River Community Foundation can help you fulfill your philanthropic dream – big or small – right here at home. We can help you make your dream a reality. Philanthropy resides in everyone, and together we can make it flourish right here in our own backyard. Contributions received before year end will receive a charitable donation receipt that can be applied against your 2019 income taxes.

Fans will instantly notice this kind of A-level talent at the Camrose festival site, but the spirit which made BVJ an institution in these parts will be maintained, and then some. “There are very few
festivals with the longevity and fan-loyalty of this one,” said Vollhoffer. “It’s an honour to be involved with such an outstanding event, and we plan on nurturing and building upon its traditions.” Country Thunder Music Festivals has a 16-year history which boasts six other

Grant funds assist Camrose organizations By Lori Larsen
The provincial government has awarded a number of community grants to not-for-profit recipients in Camrose and area. The Community Grants Program provides essential funding to approximately 1,200 not-for-profit organizations annually that assist in enriching the lives of Albertans through festivals, community events, sports equipment, recreational programs and major investments in community facilities. The not-for-profit voluntary sector’s 26,000 organizations employ more than 230,000 Albertans in full-time positions and accounts for $5.5 billion in GDP (Gross Domestic Products) annually through its paid workforce and community programming. Approved projects in Camrose include: Peter and Jeanne Lougheed Performing Arts Centre, $46,238 for specialized theatrical equipment; Camrose Veselka Ukrainian Dance Society, $6,318 for new costumes and Churchmice Players Society, $3,508 for audio and visual equipment. Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely hosted an event presenting the grants to recipients on Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. Representatives from each of the eight recipients were present to accept the grant and offered a few words about their respective organizations and the importance of receiving grant money. “Churchmice Players Society fund-raised for the purchase of wireless microphones and the Alberta Government matched the money raised,” said Churchmice Players Society member Dave McDougall. “These microphones will be used at the Lougheed Performing Arts Centre and the Bailey Theatre by Churchmice and other local community theatre organizations. This fulfills a need for groups that required more microphones than can be provided on occasion and will provide back-up microphones when the need arises.” As stated in the Churchmice Society mandate this will provide for all performing arts groups in the community. “These organizations will be able to enhance their quality of productions with excellent sound capabilities. This, in turn, lends itself to our performing arts groups to allow community members to do their best work in any facility. Participation in the performing arts, whether as a performer or audience member, fosters a sense of pride and brings together the Camrose community.”

Camrose Animal Shelter welcomes volunteers By Lori Larsen
Camrose and Area Animal Shelter (CAAS) continues to be the hub for homeless pets, specifically cats, and welcomes residents to come and consider giving a furry friend a forever home. “Some people call us the Cat Shelter,” commented CAAS treasurer Lynn Horsman. “When we have 111 cats in the shelter and turn away eight to 10 cats and kittens a week, they may be right.” Currently, the Shelter is also temporary home to two guinea pigs and a rabbit looking for a permanent place to call home. “Other animals we have sheltered include a ferret, budgies, bearded dragons and a ball python. We have no room for dogs at the moment, but hope to add them to our care sometime in the future.” In an effort to help fix the homeless cat concern in Camrose and area, the current facility opened in 2017 and is run by a group of tireless volunteers with the goal of making the lives of homeless pets (cats) more bearable. “There were too many

homeless cats in gardens, garbages, sandboxes, on the road, hurt, diseased, hungry and frozen,” said Horsman. “We said ‘enough’ so we raised money for two years and, with the help of the City of Camrose, we opened the Shelter. Now we are full. The Shelter is only a band-aid on a bigger problem.” This fall, the Shelter
experienced an influx of nursing cats with kittens as well as orphaned kittens. “There were several litters of four to six, all needing food, shelter, vaccinations, microchipping and spaying or neutering.” A foster care program was recently initiated to assist with kittens too young to be housed at the Shelter. “We currently have

in particular, those interested in regular cat care shifts. A Volunteer Coordinator and a Fundraising Leader would also be wonderful.” The Shelter does numerous fundraising initiatives including barbecues, bottle drives, raffles and market tables and welcomes cash donations and are now capable as a registered charity to issue charity tax receipts. “As we head into the tax season, remember us when you are considering making donations,” smiled Horsman. With the holiday season soon upon us, the Shelter hopes residents can find it in their hearts to not only donate to keep the Shelter doing the wonderful work it does, but that there will be more adoptive homes for the little fourlegged companions at the Shelter. “As we turn the calendar to 2020, please remember us. Give generously and join us by volunteering for this worthwhile cause.”
Open Door speaker opens minds
By Lori Larsen
City of Camrose Community Services, Parks and Recreation department is advising residents to look for signs of the black knot fungal condition that has been showing up on Prunus genus trees around the City, specifically mayday, cherry, plum, apricot and Schubert chokecherry. “Black knot is a fungal condition which is very prevalent in Camrose and many municipalities in Alberta,” noted City of Camrose Community Services senior operator/ supervisor and municipal arborist Kim Vassberg. “It is particularly noticeable at this time of the year, when the leaves are off the trees.” Now that the leaves have fallen off trees, black knot is easier to detect and appears as a dark elongated mass on the branches and trunks of trees. “The fungus promotes rapid growth of the tree cells until they become dark charred masses on the branches. If left on the tree, they will spread and kill the tree,” said Vassberg, adding that once it is spotted, however, it is easy to control through pruning. “Unfortunately, birds, rain and wind will spread the fungal spores to neighboring trees and it spreads fastest in the spring with warm wet conditions.” This is why Vassberg said it is best to prune the trees now. “The best time of year
litters in several different homes, sometimes bottle feeding every three to four hours day and night. All these cats need homes.” While the adoption rate is good, the Shelter would like to see more cats go to a loving “fur”ever home. Horsman reminds residents the number one method of controlling the population of cats is to have your pet spayed or neutered. “We are applying for grant money to hold a spay/neuter program,” she explained. “So watch for some help from us in the New Year to bring down the cost.” Valuable volunteerism The Shelter is operating on an entirely volunteer basis and is lucky to have some of the most dedicated volunteers to maintain the service. However, with the increasing numbers comes increasing demand for more hands on deck. “We do cat care twice a day and three shifts a week where volunteers can help with cleaning. We also have the joy of playing with some of the cutest, friendliest, cuddliest animals. “Our wish list includes more dedicated volunteers,

to prune black knot is in the fall through to end of March when the tree is dormant and the fungal growths are quite visible.” Checking your trees for any signs of black knot, then immediately removing diseased areas is imperative for preventing the disease from not only eventually killing your tree, but spreading to other trees. “If you happen to notice your neighbours have black knot in their yard on their trees, you should inform them of the disease,” remarked Vassberg, suggesting that if your neighbours are elderly, you may wish to assist them in removing the infected branches. “Controlling and preventing black knot is best done by pruning the infected material about six to eight inches below the fungal mass. Each time you make a cut, it is wise to have a water/bleach mixture to wipe down your pruning tools. This will prevent the spread of any spores possibly transferring from pruning equipment to more branches. If the disease is quite widespread on a tree, it may require removal of the tree.” Vassberg suggested that after you have removed infected branches, bag the branches and tightly seal the bag, disposing of it in the garbage or burning the branches, but do not compost them. “Fungal diseases thrive in moisture, so avoid unnecessary watering. Regular pruning of trees to allow air flow through the tree and removal of dead wood will make a less hospitable environment for fungus.” Check your trees often and if you notice the onset of black knot, take action as soon as you can to save the tree so it can be enjoyed in all its splendor in the spring.
The Camrose Open Door is hosting a free event on Dec. 3 at the Camrose Resort Casino for any parent, caregiver or professional who would like to learn ways to increase connections with children and youth. The session Bring Them Closer will run from 6 until 8:30 p.m. and is being presented by speaker Connie Jakab. Connie speaks from the heart as she relates her own personal story of her son going from a crisis of suicidal thoughts, depression and anxiety to now thriving in life. Connie’s son was diagnosed at the early age of six with oppositional defiance disorder and, at the tender age of eight, was suicidal. Unsure of the outcome for her son, Connie and her family worked tirelessly through the mental health care system to learn more and seek any help they could for him. Now 13, Connie’s son is on a path of wellness, thanks to the tenacity of those who loved and supported him. Connie is now sharing the journey with others, in an effort to provide hope for other families and young people in crisis. Connie will cover the tools she used to bring him out of this dark place to the place he is now. She speaks candidly about the misconceptions of mental health
concerns among children and teenagers. “The Open Door is excited to have Connie come to share her very real experience with us,” said Open Door executive director Jessica Hutton. “We journey with so many families who are experiencing similar situations and are impressed with Connie’s candidness and openness.” The Camrose Open Door is a not-for-profit organization offering programs and services and a safe place to stay, but more importantly, support and hope to youth in need between the ages of 11 and 24. Anyone interested in attending the session must register for tickets in advance, in order to reserve a seat. Tickets are booking up quickly. “This is a great event for all parents and caregivers to hear of different ways of supporting our kids and most importantly, ways to connect with our children in real and meaningful ways,” encouraged Hutton. Visit www.eventbrite. com to reserve your place in this important presentation that will provide information on positive methods of building connections with children and youth struggling with mental health concerns. Christmas Fund needs your help to reach goal of lending help By Murray Green
The holiday season is
fast approaching. So too
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Last year’s blustery weather didn’t deter people from stopping by the Charity Checkstop.
Roll up and give at Charity Checkstop By Lori Larsen
The seasonal flashing red and blue lights will be back on Saturday, Dec. 7 from noon until 4 p.m., as members of Camrose Police Service (CPS) and Camrose RCMP step up to vehicles during the 13th annual Charity Checkstop. The Charity Checkstop will be located on the service road off 48th Avenue, eastbound in front of Camrose Registry. Members and volunteers will be accepting monetary donations, gift cards, non-perishable food items and personal care supplies. All the donations and funds collected during this year’s Charity Checkstop will be divided between three very deserving community organizations. “The charity checkstop is an amazing event showcasing tremendous community support for agencies such as ours,” commented Open Door executive director Jessica Hutton. “We see over 1,000 youth
a year, and that requires a great deal of community support and compassion. “This event means that food and toiletries fill the shelves for our kids. We are so very thankful to the community for supporting us through this event.” Monetary donations given during the Charity Checkstop will be used to train advocates to aid victims of crime and tragedy in the City of Camrose and Camrose County. Tax receipts are available from Camrose and District Victim Services Unit for contributions of $25 or greater. Stop by the Charity Checkstop and help our local police services who are going the extra mile to assist those in our community who are in need. Your generosity will make a difference in someone’s life this holiday season.
is the time to get ready to assemble food and toy hampers for the Merry Christmas Fund. The Camrose Merry Christmas Fund was started 54 years ago when a need was found to supply food hampers to less fortunate families within the community. Last year, the Camrose Merry Christmas Fund supplied about 250 hampers to families. “I’m expecting that number to be closer to 260 this year,” said Merry Christmas Fund public relations chair Dale Debnam. “Last year, we raised about $32,194. We need to raise a little more, in order to purchase food for the hampers, if we receive more requests.” Donations can be made at the Royal Bank and at the Camrose Fire Department. The food hampers are intended to provide a good Christmas meal and food for an entire day. “If someone wants to have a hamper delivered to them, or a family, they have to register at the Camrose and District Neighbor Aid Center,” said Dale. The
number at the centre is 780-679-3220. Volunteers also help deliver toys packaged by the Camrose Kinettes. “The Kinettes sort and package the toys, the Lions Club picks them up and drops them off to us and we send them out with the food hampers,” shared Dale. “We meet at the current Fire Hall starting at 9 a.m. to start delivering hampers,” said Dale.” The hampers are packed at the Fire Hall on Thursday, Dec. 19 and delivered to homes on Saturday, Dec. 21, in the morning. If people know they are receiving a hamper, they are asked to be home to receive the hamper to avoid sending it back. Co-chairs for the Merry Christmas Fund are Morris Henderson and Jason Delwo. The Fund was launched with $4,000 from the Camrose Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, $1,000 from the Round Hill Elks and $500 from the Camrose Royal Purple.
Hospice hosts annual Lights to Remember By Lori Larsen
For many who have lost loved ones, the holiday
season can be especially difficult. On Dec. 4, join the Hospice Society of Camrose and District (HSCD) for the annual Lights to Remember Ceremony, honouring loved ones who have passed away and sharing in fellowship with others during the evening. The ceremony will take place from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the Hospice office on the lower level of the Mirror Lake Centre (5415-49 Avenue, south side of building). “We will have a candle-lighting ceremony, some singing and offer some thoughts and words of comfort,” remarked Hospice Society president Pam Cummer. The evening offers so many a sense of knowing
they are not alone and reminds all of us to be especially cognizant of those who may be dealing with the pain of loss. “An empty chair at the table during family gatherings is a poignant reminder of loss and may activate waves of grief,” said Cummer. The event is planned for outdoors, so guests are asked to wear warm clothing. After the ceremony, guests are invited to come indoors for refreshments, stories and conversation. For anyone wishing to sponsor a light on the HSCD Remembrance Tree (in front of the Bill Fowler Information Centre on 48th Avenue) in memory of a loved one, visit the website at www.camrosehospice.org.

Newer Shelby Mustang adds comfort By Murray Green
Normally, when we talk about the Ford Shelby Mustangs, we discuss the vintage models. However, the newer models are also designed to be classics of the future. Stan Wilkie of Ferintosh owns such a vehicle in a 2014 Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang. “I wanted a Ford Shelby because of the performance, I like the looks and the 662 horsepower that goes with it,” confessed Stan. “That was a big part of it, I wanted something that could go.” The Shelby Mustang is a high-performance variant of the Ford Mustang, which was built by Shelby American from 1965 to 1968 and from 1969 to 1970 by Ford. Following the introduction of the fifth generation Ford Mustang in 2005, the Shelby nameplate was revived as a new high-performance model, this time designed and built by Ford. “I found this car in Sherwood Park, so I picked it up. I’ve always been a Ford fan and I have a 1970 Mustang that I used to drag race with. I like the new cars because they have performance with great drivability. They handle well and have more comfort, so that’s the reason I wanted this car,” added Stan. The Shelby American version of Shelby GT was

FUN FACTS
Shelby offered a unique set of modifications for the exterior. On the base GT, it received a front splitter conversion with a GT500 rear spoiler and quarter glass covers. The hood was made of fiberglass to save weight and the Le Mans stripes added some style. A separate wide body conversion with the option of rearonly or full all-around wide body wheel arches was also available to spice up the exterior of the 2014 Shelby GT. The interior of the 2014 Shelby GT had been overhauled to keep up with the latest trends. Unique touches to the interior included an A-pillar gauge pod with boost, and fuel and oil pressure gauges. This modification was only available on the GT/SC conversion. Even the standard GT conversion got the Shelby headrest covers, special GT dash plaque and engine plate. Leather upholstery in black was standard along with electrically adjustable seats. The Shelby GT standard is the base pack with 430 horsepower. The slight bump in power was achieved by fitting a performance exhaust as well as engine tuning. The Shelby GT/SC gives 100 more horsepower over the base modification. The Shelby Ford Racing Whipple Supercharger kit, offered either 525 or 624 horsepower configurations, Shelby cooling systems and a front splitter.
on a lot of miles. My girls race cars, so it may end up with them. My wife hasn’t even driven it yet (at the time of the interview),” he laughed. “It has a standard transmission and as soon as you hit the throttle it tends to blow the tires off, a little touchy.” Shelby offered a unique set of modifications for the exterior. On the base GT, it got a front splitter conversion with a GT500 rear spoiler and quarter glass covers. “The car has been lowered a little. It has an aluminum motor in it, so it is light, it has twin cams, a blower, adjustable suspension and a six-speed transmission,” Stan listed the goodies on the Shelby. Among other accessories, Shelby GT front fascia, carbon laminated hood louvers, billet upper grille with Ford running pony emblem and “Powered by Ford” badges on the sides completed the exterior package.
“I like the different body style of a Shelby. Everything is upgraded. It is like the premium of the Mustangs. It has great performance and all the comforts.
The older Mustangs had the top of the line Shelby’s and this is similar where they are loaded with the extras,” shared Stan.

Mostly be yourself
We thought it would be fun to make use of our Halloween candy movie bags by having a family movie night. (Halloween candy isn’t safe in the house from mom until the candy has been carefully sorted, placed in zip lock bags and stored for movie nights.) We rented the movie Diary of a Wimpy Kid, based on the bestselling books by Jeff Kinney. I was surprised that it was my husband and I who laughed the hardest. The older brother gives this advice on his brother’s first day of middle school: “Don’t talk to anyone. Don’t look at anyone. Don’t go anywhere. Don’t sit down. Don’t raise your hand. Don’t go to the bathroom. Don’t get noticed. Don’t choose the wrong locker.” Easy, right? When I was in junior high, there was definitely the sense that you shouldn’t make yourself stand out because then you could get picked on. What an awful message for youth to think–basically it means be yourself, but don’t be yourself too much. Be yourself, but make sure that you’re not too different from everyone else. If you play the accordion, hide that you play the accordion at all costs. Towards the end of the movie, a group of high school students are tormenting two middle school students in retaliation for something that happened on Halloween night. The older students force one of the younger students to eat a piece of moldy cheese that has been lying on the basketball court for an indeterminate amount of time. It was that scene that seemed to stick in the minds of my children at bedtime while we were chatting before bed. They seemed really confused by it and said, “Mom, I don’t understand why the older kid was making the younger kid do that.” This made me pause, because this comment made it clear to me that bullying has changed a lot since I was a kid. No more atomic wedgies from the sounds of it. My children have never seen an aggressive, humiliating type of bullying act. Maybe they are too young to have seen much bullying, or maybe there is just way less of it. Schools seem to have really cracked down on that kind of behaviour since school shootings in the U.S. and Canada, and people are realizing that extensive, long-term bullying can have devastating consequences. As an adult, there were a few reasons I could think of for why someone would treat someone else so badly. I suggested that the older kid maybe didn’t feel good about himself, and maybe his parents or someone else in his life was really mean to him. Maybe he had gotten away with treating others like that before. Then I thought of a way to explain–he was bucket dipping. This is based on the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud and the notion that everybody has a bucket, and we are either filling another person’s bucket or dipping into their bucket with how we treat them. I described that movie scene as the older boy being a bucket dipper because he thought it would fill his own bucket and make him happy. My eight-year-old suddenly connected with that and said, “He was being a bucket dipper and he wasn’t using his ROAR!” (This stands for Respect, Ownership, Achievement and Responsibility and is their school’s motto.) I hid a smile and agreed that was exactly what the older student was doing. At the end of the movie, one girl says to another girl who has been a bully, “One day middle school will end and become high school. And after that, it just becomes life and all those things that you think are important now, won’t be anymore.” Wow. And that’s when you know it’s not only okay to bring that accordion out, but you can find other people who play the accordion and start a club. When I went to college, I remember being astonished that nobody cared anymore who you were friends with, what clothes you wore or how you did your hair. It was finally okay to just be completely yourself. I wish it was like that all the way through school for students. I know that bullying hasn’t gone away. Hopefully the fact that my children were confused by that movie scene says that we are heading in the right direction, and giving bullying the boot. Bring out the accordions!

Helena Thiessen Helena Thiessen (nee Franz) was born on September 4, 1928 to George and Barbara Franz in Chinook, Alberta. She was raised on farms in the Chinook and Castor areas and attended school there until the family moved to the Tees area. She completed her education after finishing the eighth grade. The family moved to Tofield in 1943 and this is where they finally settled. As the family arrived in Tofield, Helena met George Thiessen, the man who would be her soulmate for the next 72 years. They were married on June 8, 1947 and started a life together that would see them travel the entire province of Alberta and most of Canada. In 1977, Helena survived a massive stroke that saw her mobility affected as well as her speech and her eyesight. She spent several years in the Glenrose Hospital and the old General Hospital before being transferred to the Dickensfield Extended Care Facility. She spent several years there until George retired and she was able to move home to be with him. George and Helena spent many years travelling the country from the BC coast to the Maritimes with special emphasis on the northern parts of our great country. Helena was always up for a road trip and most times it didn’t matter where they where headed – fishing, sightseeing or a fall trip to see the trees in all their glorious colors. Helena leaves behind her loving husband George; her son Dale; her daughter Barbara (Gary) Leppek; and her granddaughters Jessica (Tristan) Zapata and Lyndsey (Jeremy) Johnson. She also leaves behind five great-grandchildren TJ, Lukas, Aiden and Ryder Zapata and Letty Johnson. She was predeceased by her parents and all of her siblings. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Christmas Lane is on Marler By Lori Larsen
Christmas magic is in the air on Marler Drive in Camrose, between 43 Avenue and 68 Street, as a good majority of the residences that line that road have lit up earning the title Christmas Lane. Spurred on by a couple of eager residents wanting to bring more joy to the season, Christmas Lane is an initiative hosted by participating residents on Marler Drive and other community volunteers. While many residences around Camrose and area bring sparkle to the season with Christmas lights, blow-up characters, seasonal lawn ornaments and other festive decor, many of the folks along Marler Drive have taken it upon themselves to decorate big, small and somewhere in between. Officially, the participating homes on Christmas Lane will light up beginning Dec. 6 through 31, but already residents can see a glow coming from the area. The goal is to encourage residents and visitors to take a trip down Christmas Lane on Marler Drive and take in all the splendor of the season brightly lit by colourful lights and decorations.

Kodiaks hockey team back on even terms with .500 record By Murray Green
The Camrose Kodiaks took out its frustrations on a recent road trip on the unsuspecting Calgary Canucks. Camrose scored the first five goals and went on to record a 7-2 victory on Nov. 20. Seven different goal scorers contributed on offence. Greyson Stewart, Cody Laskosky and Griffen
Fraser netted markers in the opening period. In the middle frame, Carson Kurylo and Connor Brock recorded a tally before the Canucks got on the scoreboard. Jacob Kendall connected for another goal before the Canucks replied again. Cam McAdam closed the scoring in the third period. Goalie Cole Tisdale played well, especially in
the third, to record the win. He turned away 24 of 26 shots directed his way. It was a rough road trip for the Kodiaks in northern Alberta on Nov. 16 and 17. After a scoreless opening period in Bonnyville, the home town Pontiacs scored twice before the Kodiaks could get on the scoresheet. In the last minute, Laskosky counted the marker for Camrose.

The Kodiaks fired 32 on the Bonnyville cage. The Okotoks Oilers blanked the Kodiaks 3-0 on Oct. 26. Tisdale stopped 23 of 25 shots directed his way. Camrose lost 4-2 to the Fort McMurray Oil Barons
