Volunteer tree planting goes ahead

Now Is The Time To Spring Into Colour!

By Murray Green

The GFoundation will be holding its volunteer tree planting events on June 4 and 5 in Beaver County, and June 6 and 7 in Camrose County. The organization has 2,000 trees for planting that were ordered and paid for in 2019. “This is an appeal for members and supporters to now help plant them,” said GFoundation president Winston Gereluk. “This year’s tree planting will accommodate social distancing and other protections, near its headquarters in Beaver County.” All four dates will require volunteer planters between 1 and 5 p.m. Gereluk invited volunteers to sign up for preferred dates and times by sending a message to gf@foundation.ca, while highlighting the measures undertaken to protect participants. Orientation: Each planting day will begin with a short orientation (outdoors), while practicing social distancing. Special social distancing measuring batons will be readily available. Isolated groups or individuals: Activities have been organized to facilitate tree planting by single individuals or small groups (couples or otherwise) who currently live together. Staggered work spaces: Planting has been staggered over a number of days to avoid contacts with too many other volunteers. Campfire socializing: Potlucks or shared foods have been cancelled in lieu of a campfire, where everyone brings their own food

Producers can connect directly with food service and retail operations to get more farm-fresh food on Albertans’ tables through an enhanced online tool. Agriculture and Forestry provided $81,000 to the Alberta Farm Fresh Producers Association (AFFPA) through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership to enhance its online producer directory. The grant allowed AFFPA to expand its directory to include more producer profiles and build awareness of the high-quality

farm-fresh food for which Alberta is known. The site will now give retailers, wholesalers, restaurants and the food service industry more opportunities to connect with farms. The AFFPA will also be offering complimentary memberships for farmers and ranchers for 2020 and 2021. “Alberta’s farmers grow the best food in the world. We’re proud to work with the AFFPA to help get our high-quality, locally sourced food into more kitchens across Alberta,” said Devin Dreeshen,

Alberta Minister of Agriculture and Forestry “With increased connections between Alberta producers, processors, retail and food services, more Albertans will be able to enjoy the great locally produced and processed food,” shared Willard de Wilde, president of the Alberta Farm Fresh Producers Association. Local food sales from farmers’ markets and through direct-to-consumer channels have more than doubled since 2008 and exceeded $1 billion in 2018.

Centra Cam recycle depot reopens By Lori Larsen

Centra Cam Recycle Depot is now open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. only. Gates will be closed when the facility is not open. Residents are reminded to not leave any material outside the gates. The organics area is permanently closed. Separated material is accepted

at no cost at the landfill compost area. Branches and wood waste are $25/ ton at the landfill burn pit area. Centra Cam staff will be directing traffic, and those working outside the building will be required to wear masks. There will be no public access to the buildings.

Paper products can be dropped through the openings on the west side of the building. Cardboard from residential sources should be placed in bins. Cardboard from commercial collection should be capable of being dumped inside. Commercial cardboard will no longer be accepted at landfill for composting.

“In dogs, the condition is considerably different than people,” said Dr. Whiting. “We may have a slight reaction at the bite site, but often, there is nothing. If the tick is positive for Lyme disease, we may see no symptoms or we may see arthritis and damage to the kidneys. If the tick is positive for Lyme disease, a short course of antibiotics will often prevent further development. “This is why testing for the ticks is so important. If anyone finds a tick, attached or not, they should bring it to a vet clinic to be sent off and tested.” After walking pets or if pets are travelling in areas with long grass and vegetation cover, they should be checked frequently. If you discover a tick on your pet, then you can try to remove it. “You need to grab it behind the head with a set of tweezers or forceps and slowly pull it straight out. You want to

remove the tick without breaking off it’s mouthpart. If you are not comfortable doing that, we are happy to help.” Prevention can be your best weapon against ticks and tick bites. Dr. Whiting shares the following advice. “There are a number of preventatives that are very good. Some of these are topical (applied on the skin of the neck) and other ones are oral. These products are very good, very safe and any dog that goes outside should be on them for the summer months. Talk to your local vet to find the best choice.” Keep your pets safe and take the proper precautionary measures to guard against any chance of a tick bite. If you are ever concerned that your pet has been bit or they are showing signs of unwellness, contact your local veterinary office immediately.
