ALWAYS BETTER – ALWAYS BETTER READ
• SHOW • Camrose Regional Exhibition has been greatly impacted by not being able to temporarily host most functions; need at the Camrose & District Food Bank has increased, yet typical fundraising activity has been curtailed. Meanwhile, up-and-coming music stars, the likes of east central Alberta’s own Travis Dolter, aren’t able to perform at typical summer country-pop venues. Creative solution:
A Drive-In Music Concert at the CRE with the $5.00 per vehicle price being directed, in entirety, to the local food bank! Travis Dolter and His Band will be on “stage” on Friday, June 19 at 8 p.m. The unique setting/opportunity will be available to the occupants of the first 175 vehicles. Once you are on the grounds, you will not be able to exit your vehicle for any reason. No concession or washroom facilities will be offered. Join a unique brand of Friday night fun in Camrose during COVID-19. For more information, see story on pages 13 and 14.

Former Buffaloes, Trojans move on to junior football By Murray Green
The Camrose Buffaloes Football Association and the École Camrose Composite High School Trojans football team continue to develop good players for the next level. Four Camrose players recently signed on to play Canadian Junior Football League when it starts again. Linebacker Alex Lawson of the Trojans, who also coached with the Buffaloes for the past three years, signed with the Edmonton Huskies. Receiver Drew Loosemoore signed with the Edmonton Wildcats. Leaving Alberta, both lineman Kevin Kittler and defensiveback Jase McCarthy will be heading to the Valley Huskers in BC. “Our members enjoyed watching you learn to play football as Buffaloes and then as Trojans. Cutting red tape to stimulate the economy By Murray Green
Bill 22, the Red Tape Reduction Implementation Act clears the way for businesses to operate more efficiently and freely as we prepare for the reopening of the economy. The bill proposes 14 legislative changes across six different ministries. Several of these changes work to promote job creation and support economic growth by removing unnecessary burdens imposed on Albertans and businesses. The remaining changes focus on expediting government approvals, enhancing government transparency, eliminating outdated requirements, and reducing the administrative burden on municipalities. “Especially now, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, we need to think about ways to make government work better for Albertans. Bill 22 addresses a number of red tape issues, frees up our economy, and will help get Albertans back to work,” said Grant Hunter, associate minister of Red Tape Reduction. The bill makes it easier and more affordable for non-profits to operate in Alberta. It improves the effi-
ciency of changes to surface rights agreements. Reduces trade barriers for grazing leases. Eliminates unnecessary delays in the oil sands approval process. Provides more effective and timely online access to statistical government information and reports. “Alberta is open for business and that includes supporting non-profits that do such important work in our communities. I’m happy to see these red tape reduction items coming forward to make life easier and more attractive for businesses and non-profits in our province,” said Nate Glubish, minister of Service Alberta “The Law Society of Alberta wishes to gratefully acknowledge the assistance and cooperation of the Alberta government in the introduction of proposed amendments to the Business Corporations Act to eliminate certain resident Canadian director requirements. We expect this to have a positive impact on the business environment in Alberta,” added Cal Johnson, bencher, Law Society of Alberta.

Filipino Independence Day parade celebrates 122 years
FILIPINO DAY
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joined the Filipino community in Canada and around the world to celebrate the 122nd anniversary of Philippine Independence. The Filipino community has become one of the fastest growing communities in Canada, reaching nearly one million people. Trudeau said that the community enriches our national fabric and plays a pivotal role in strengthening the close bonds between our two countries. June is also Filipino Heritage Month and a time to recognize the significant contributions and the rich culture and traditions that past and present generations of Canadians of Filipino origin have brought to Canada. They also in turn thanked our frontline workers.

Reflecting on the gift of fatherhood By Lori Larsen
They are there for us in ways we often overlook: silent supporters and promised protectors, our fathers and father figures whom we have come to celebrate on Father’s Day each year, the third Sunday in June. This year on June 21, celebrations may be a bit more subdued, but many children will honour their fathers in ways that are special to both them and their fathers. For some, that could mean a day spent casting a line at a favourite fishing hole, while others may strap up a hammock for Dad and let him relax while they complete the Sunday chores and fire up the grill. For others, it may mean sharing a round of golf. For Camrosian Wayne Throndson, Father’s Day is an opportunity to reflect on what he has come to realize over the years of being a son, son-in-law and father– the privilege of being a father is the best gift of all. “Growing up, I must admit, Father’s Day was a pretty low-key event. Usually, we would get together as a family and Dad would either barbecue, or we would order Chinese food.” Lucky to have lived
close to his family, Wayne was able to get together with them often, but he certainly appreciates that for other families getting together on special days such as Father’s Day
was perhaps a bit more relevant. “I can certainly understand Father’s Day taking on a greater significance for families that couldn’t see each other as often.” Today’s reality has
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster

families living much further apart and unfortunately the situation in which our world finds itself at present, has made geographical boundaries larger, which oddly enough makes many people realize the real importance of family. With many people, a true appreciation for the important role parents (fathers) play in their lives doesn’t truly hit home until they too become a parent. “When I got married and we had our two children, I was often reminded by my wife that ‘everyday is Father’s Day’,” joked Wayne. “But really, she is right. “I think as fathers, we often receive more than we give. Being actively involved in our children’s lives–be it sports, school or other activities–was a joy and not a chore. I don’t need a special day to be reminded my family cares, but I certainly don’t mind the ‘guilt-free golf’ or the coupons from the kids to wash my car or cut the lawn.” And I think most fathers would agree with Wayne, because those are the gifts that feature time spent together or spent doing the things that make
a father’s life a little bit easier. “As I get older, Father’s Day has taken on a different meaning,” pondered Wayne. “It is a time to reflect not only on my family, but also on the lives of my father and fatherin-law, who have passed away, but were great dads. I guarantee a father hearing that would be much more appreciative of that than a new power tool.” Wayne has a very valid point. Power tools usually only last as long as their warranty, but respect, appreciation, support and love have lifelong guarantees. No matter how you are celebrating those special men in your lives–fathers, grandfathers, husbands or father figures–the most important gift you can offer is the gift of your time. It may be a quiet family gathering at home or a Zoom meeting, but taking the time to let him know he’s special will go a long way. On a final note, Wayne shared a simple, yet heartfelt sentiment to all fathers and father-like figures. “Have a great Father’s Day.”

Province moves to Stage 2 By Murray Green

Mrs. Trach May great things bless you. Love your Kids and Grandkids
Test data shows active COVID-19 cases in Alberta are lower than expected, meaning Stage 2 of the relaunch strategy began on June 12, a week sooner than expected. Albertans can enjoy additional activities in their daily lives, while the
province continues to open up the economy. “Albertans have demonstrated the care and common sense needed to move forward with our relaunch earlier than initially planned. Our data tells us our active cases are low, hospitalizations are trending downward and people are taking action to protect
those most vulnerable and prevent the spread of the virus. We will continue to move forward together to overcome any tough times ahead, but responsible Albertans should be proud of the vigilance they have shown to date,” said Premier Jason Kenney. Continued on page 10

Province moves to Stage 2 of relaunch plan Continued from page 10
Current data from June 14 shows only 422 active cases and 46 people in hospital across Alberta. This is a significant decrease of active cases since May 14 when the province began Stage 1 of the Alberta Relaunch Strategy. With its robust approach to testing, Alberta has performed more COVID-19 tests per capita than most other jurisdictions in the world. As the province enters Stage 2 of relaunch, safety remains the top priority. More businesses, sport and recreation services can open if they are ready.
Some larger gatherings for seated audience events will be permitted. In all cases, public health guidance must be followed. “More Albertans can now return to work and to the activities so many of us enjoy. However, I encourage you to do it safely. Think of the people in your life who may be at high risk from COVID-19 and protect all those around you as you would want your loved ones protected. Stay home if you are sick. Stay two metres apart and wear a nonmedical mask if you can’t,” said Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Chief Medical Officer of Health
and former Augustana student. Open with restrictions are: K-12 schools for requested diploma exams and summer school; libraries; additional surgeries; wellness services such as massage, acupuncture and reflexology; personal services (esthetics, cosmetic skin and body treatments, manicures, pedicures, waxing, facial treatment, artificial tanning); indoor recreation, fitness and sports including gyms and arenas; movie theatres and theatres; community halls; team sports; pools for leisure swimming; VLTs in restaurants and bars; casi-
nos and bingo halls (but not table games). The 50 per cent capacity limit for provincial campgrounds is also being lifted. The online reservation system will be updated and sites will come online in phases. By July 1, all camping sites will be open for reservations. Firstcome, first-served sites may open sooner. Events and gatherings can be larger with a maximum of 50 people such as indoor social gatherings including wedding and funeral receptions, and birthday parties. Maximum 100 people will be allowed for outdoor
events and indoor seated/ audience events including wedding and funeral ceremonies. No cap on the number of people (with public health measures and physical distancing in place) are worship gatherings, restaurants, cafés, lounges, casinos and bingo halls. There is more flexibility for family groups, small groups of people whose members do not always keep two metres apart. A household can increase its close interactions with other households to a maximum of 15 people.

Quilts to warm hearts By Lori Larsen
The Battle River Quilters’ Guild didn’t let a little social distancing stand in the way of sewing quilts, then donating them to notfor-profit organizations. Despite being unable to meet as a social group, due to COVID-19 pandemic health orders, the members hunkered down at their homes and literally sewed their hearts out. “The Guild, currently with more than 40 members, usually enjoys getting together twice a month,” said Guild member Anna Harder. “While quilting and sewing can be solitary hobbies, meeting and working together, sharing our enthusiasm for quilting and textile art, supporting and celebrating with each other through the ups and downs of life, turn a solitary pursuit into a very rewarding and social one.”
as the Learning Together program and others. “The Guild has had a long-term relationship with the Camrose Women’s Shelter,” said Harder. “Gifts of quilts have been made for more than 20 years and a conservative estimate of the number would be 1,000. It is the Guild’s wish that every woman who comes to the Shelter, in a time of obvious crisis, leaves with a quilt. A gift “From our Hands to Your Heart” is labelled on each quilt. Every other year, the Guild presents a quilt show. This year, 2020 Treasures, would have been held at the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre on June 26 and 27. Due to COVID-19, it has been postponed until June 25 and 26, 2021. However, the quilt raffle that coincides with the quilt show will be proceeding this year on June 27 at 11 a.m. outside the

Battle River Quilting Guild member Anna Harder, left, presented 31 beautifully handmade quilts to Camrose Women’s Shelter executive director Nora-Lee Rear. The Guild has been donating quilts to not-for-profit organizations, such as the Women’s Shelter, for years to aid the people in need of these organizations and a provide a little comfort.
Unfortunately, the past few months have meant quilting was done in the isolation of their own homes, however, they were still in communication with one another and still supporting each other and other members of the community and world through these challenging times. “Many Guild members, along with many others with sewing machines, have responded to the pandemic with immense generosity in terms of time, materials and effort to provide masks, headbands and scrub bags to frontline workers and members of the community. This work continues as requests come in,” noted Harder. Guild members didn’t forget about those with greater need in the community either. The Guild members’ hard work has paid off for many not-for-profit organizations throughout the community over the years, including long-term care centres Louise Jensen, Rosehaven (The Bethany Group), St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose and District Support Services (Family Violence Action Society) as well
Chuck MacLean Art Centre. Attendees are asked to follow all Alberta Health orders by maintaining a physical distance of two metres and not gathering in crowds of more than 15. Funds raised for the quilt draw will be divided, with 50 per cent going directly to the Camrose Women’s Shelter and 50 per cent going to Guild funds to help replenish materials for future quilts to donate. “While we are unable to have our quilt show this year, we want to showcase quilting on June 27 in Camrose, in an event coined Yard Goods 2020,” explained Harder. “All quilters and anyone who has a quilt they love are invited to display them in their front yards.” Harder encourages residents to get creative with their displays, then welcomes all residents and guests to Camrose to take a walk, bike ride or cautious drive in your vehicle and enjoy the amazing and beautiful craftsmanship during an informal, socially distant quilt show. This is a perfect opportunity to “sew” off your quilting handiwork.

Dolter concert By Murray Green
Country singer Travis Dolter of Hay Lakes will be holding a drive-in concert on June 19 at the CRE (Camrose Regional Exhibition) beginning at 8 p.m. The cost is $5 per vehicle and the proceeds go to the Camrose Neighbor Aid Center for the Food Bank. The cost of the event should be offset by the sponsors. Much like a drive-in movie, cars will be in the CRE parking lot and people can listen to the concert, while still in their vehicles. “It will be weird for me not to directly interact with the audience, because I won’t be able to see everyone in their vehicles, so I want to make sure that the band and I bring a lot of energy to the concert,” said Travis, who is completing his third year of studies at Augustana in his spare time. People can roll down their windows and listen, or better yet, tune into the designated FM station and hear him on the vehicle stereo system. “We won’t have main speakers on stage because that would create an echo. When we heard about the CRE having a drivein movie, we thought why not a concert? We thought why not take this to the next level and find sponsors to help us,” he explained. Travis and his full band will have a stage, lights and screen. Travis will be joined by Lane Anderson on keyboards, Steven Gowda on drums and Mike Brazeau on bass. They wanted to support the Food Bank. “There are a lot of people who don’t have extra money right now because they lost their jobs. It’s a good cause, helps local people and we want to make sure people have food in the time of need. We want the people in our community to have the best wellness that they can,” he added. “We will be performing a song I wrote during this pandemic called ‘Bottle Depot’. I figured that people who were stuck at home would have a few beverages and by the time the bottle depot opened, there would be quite a few bottles piled up,” he laughed. “It is a more upbeat way at looking at the situation and bringing positivity to the people who are stuck at home.” Continued on page 14

Travis will unveil his new release “Lake Day” at this concert. Current hit “Hell If I Know” is number one on the True North Country Indie Radio Countdown, number six on the KB Country Indie Radio Countdown and number 127 on the Rolling Charts. “To make the top 100 is really good. That’s my next goal, to reach the top 100,” said Travis. His debut release was “Just To Say I Did” that reached number four on the Indie Top 50 countdown in 2019 on True North Country Radio and number one on the KB Country Indie Radio Countdown. “We actually recorded the song in our individual spaces and then put the song together. We are going to have our first practice on our farm with social distancing.” Travis has opened for Hey Romeo, played festivals including Big Valley Jamboree and shared his music at theatre shows across Alberta and Saskatchewan. “We plan on releasing one or two more singles before we make an album. We are looking at a winter recording time.” In 2019, Travis won both the North Ameri-
Country Music Association International Male Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year Awards in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, followed up by taking first place at the Country 106.5 Star Search in Vegreville. Growing concern Chief LaGrange
Don’t flush your money down the drain, instead participate in the…
TOILET REBATE PROGRAM!
By Ron Pilger
The world, in general, has been horrified with the death of George Floyd during the course of his arrest for an alleged minor offence. This event has sparked a global reckoning over police brutality and racial prejudice. In the past two weeks, the positive efforts of law enforcement have been overshadowed by this unusual, infrequent and unforgettable moment. It has implications for police agencies everywhere, potentially even here in our community. We asked Camrose Police Service Chief Dean LaGrange to share his message with Booster readers. As many of you know, the world is in turmoil right now, and law enforcement is at the centre of that unrest. I want to take this opportunity to address you, the citizens of Camrose, as it is my privilege to serve and protect, along with twentynine other members of your police service. The George Floyd homicide was the proverbial match that ignited a simmering tinderbox of emotion, decades in the making. Since the times of slavery, racism has been an ugly reality that is not unique to the United States of America. Indeed, Canada also has a history that includes racism and bigotry. Although slavery was abolished and residential schools are no longer, racism and other offensive traits still linger in our society, to think otherwise would be naïve. Pop culture and media have all too often portrayed policing as car chases and shoot-outs. The reality is, modern policing involves a daily dose of people suffering from addictions, mental health illness and homelessness. It includes hate crimes, domestic abuse, sexual violence, crimes against children, and yes, handing out the occasional speeding ticket. At times, policing can also be physical, dealing with violent and uncooperative people. Ultimately, society provides us with the authority and tools to use force when necessary, and only in an amount reasonable to effect an arrest
or stop a threat. What happened to George Floyd was neither necessary, nor reasonable. In fact, it was outrageous, a criminal act that should be denounced in the strongest possible manner. Police officers are not infallible and are certainly not beyond reproach. If an officer betrays the public and their fellow officers by acting outside of the law, immediate action must be taken to maintain public trust and confidence in their police service. That said, I am extremely proud of the men and women of the Camrose Police Service, past and present. The relationship we have with our community is the envy of many other police agencies. We work collaboratively with our community partners to maintain public safety, including the Camrose Women’s Shelter, The Open Door, Alberta Health Services, Alberta Education and many others. Our partners at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus regularly liaise with us on various issues. Our strategic plan was created with extensive public consultation and input. The Camrose Police Service is a member of CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement), which goes above and beyond the requirements of provincial standards. We have enormous respect and gratitude for our City leadership and our Police Commission, a civilian oversight body made up of volunteers from our own community, who ensure your police service operates with transparency and accountability. We do not take these relationships and partnerships for granted, nor the community, whose support we rely upon. Every day we work to not only maintain these relationships, but build upon them. We are not content to sit back and coast on previous achievements. Our commitment to you, the citizens of Camrose, is to continue providing policing services in a professional, unbiased and competent manner, one that all of us can continue to be proud of. Dean LaGrange, Chief of Police

The automotive section of
Janzen made his own super Nova II By Murray Green
Doug Janzen owns a 1962 Chevrolet II 400 Nova with a 327 engine. “I bought this car four years ago off of a guy in Whitecourt. I have always had Novas. I had a 1970 Nova until it was stolen. So, I was looking for another Nova when I came across this one. I’ve had a few ’70s Novas, so I wanted to change it up a bit,” shared Doug. Nova is a small automobile manufactured by Chevrolet, and produced in five generations for the 1962 through 1979, and 1985 through 1988 model years. “I like the squareness of this style a little more than the coupe from the ’70s. It’s different and I really like it,” explained Doug. “I like the fact that it is a hardtop, the colour and it had a fair price on it. I put about $10,000 to $15,000 into the car to get it running for the streets.” Nova was the top model in the Chevy II lineup through 1968. The Chevy II nameplate was dropped after 1968, with Nova becoming the nameplate for all of the 1969 through 1979 models. “I put in a 12-bolt rear end (shortened to handle more horsepower) and had it mini-tubbed (widening the wheelwells). It has a fuel cell in the back and CPP suspension in the front. The motor has two heads on it
SUPER NOVA
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Doug Janzen kept the smoothly designed 1962 Chevrolet Nova II sleek on the outside, but added some muscle to his classic to give it the horsepower when he needs, or wants it. He still hopes to go to some area car shows in the summer.
with an Edelbrock input and Holly carburetor that produces about 400 horsepower,” explained Doug. “I wanted to have something with a little extra power. I like a little bit of speed.
FUN FACTS
The 1962 model range included sedans and wagons, as well as a two-door hardtop and a convertible. The only body styles it didn’t offer, which the Ford Falcon did, were a two-door wagon/sedan delivery and coupe utility (the Ford Falcon Ranchero), most likely to avoid competing with Chevrolet’s own El Camino. After the rear-engine Chevrolet Corvair was outsold by the conventional Falcon in 1960, Chevrolet completed work on a more conventional compact car that would eventually become the Chevy II. The car was of semi-unibody construction, having a bolt on front section joined to its unitized cabin and trunk rear section, available in two-door coupe and fourdoor sedan configurations as well as convertible and station wagon versions. The 1962 Chevy II came in three series and five body styles–the 100 Series, 300 Series and Nova 400 Series. A 200 series was also introduced, but was discontinued almost immediately. Available engines for the Chevy II in 1962 and 1963 included Chevrolet’s inline-four engine of 153 cubic inch (2.5 litre) and a new third generation 194 cubic inch (3.2 litre) Chevrolet straight-six engine. All Chevy II engines featured overhead valves. A V8 engine was not available in 1962 and 1963.
It’s perfect for me and it is a nice car. It has a coilovers in the back (to educe body roll when taking turns and cornering, particularly at higher speeds) and a new wiring harness. It is a standard transmission, has the original stereo and dash. I replaced the brakes with some out of a 1968 Camaro,” he continued. “I reupholstered the interior. The back seats were reupholstered to match the bucket seats.” Unlike the Corvair, the 1962 Chevy II was deliberately never intended to be revolutionary in concept or execution; its mission was to give Chevrolet buyers a simple, back-to-the-basics compact car. However, the work on a vehicle is never done. “Eventually, I want new tires for the back. I can’t find the size I want, but eventually I’ll change those. I may go with more suspension in the front, more coil, and that is about it. It is a good driver with a solid motor. Maybe
I’ll put some power steering in it one day.” Doug is a true car guy and has won best hot rod trophies along the way. “In the summer, I drive it as much as possible. Every
Tuesday, I go to Sherwood Park with it and meet with friends to talk car stuff. I go to as many car shows as I can, a lot of them. I love the hobby and you meet good people.”

By Jackie Lovely MLA Camrose Constituency
Dear friends and neighbours in the Camrose constituency: I want to set the record straight, we are not selling parks. The NDP anger machine has continued to lie and deceive the people of this great province as we hear loud and clear you love your Alberta parks. Just this week in the house, Minister of Environment and Parks Jason Nixon said, “We listened to Albertans who want a restructuring process for parks in positive ways; that does not include selling parks.” Even the NDP environment critic Marlin Schmidt, who has been spreading the misinformation, admitted in the house recently that parks are not for sale. “I just want to clarify one thing the member said about the fact of parks not being for sale. I just want to say that I agree with the Minister of Transportation when he says that parks are not for sale, because technically they are not for sale.” Some of the things we will be doing with parks is eliminating costly practices such as delivering firewood with helicopters or having staff drive six hours to camping facilities that are not being used. Those things done by the previous government were a huge mismanagement of public money, and will not continue to happen under our watch. It is true we have some facilities being transferred from the parks act to the public lands act, but that land will still remain protected and Albertans will continue to be able to access those recreation facilities. Another thing we will be doing is working with Alberta non-profits and conservation organizations on partnerships. This is something we have been doing in this province for a very long time, and something we ran in the campaign to find efficiencies with our parks. We have a bold vision for the tourism industry, and opening up more facilities and areas for First Nations and non-profit operations is a great way to encourage investment and create jobs across Alberta as we implement our 10-year tourism strategy. Working together as Albertans will allow for the continuation of healthy parks and conservation areas in the province for years to come. I hope to see you out at the many parks this summer, like Miquelon Lake Provincial Park Campground in our beautiful riding of Camrose and again, parks are not for sale. I am very happy to share that the second stage of Alberta’s relaunch strategy began on Friday, June 12–one week ahead of schedule. This stage will significantly open up our communities to the activities that we have all been missing. Houses of worship will be able to expand their attendance, as long as there is room for physical distancing, and sports teams will finally be able to practice together. This also means that a number of businesses ranging from gyms, to spas, to libraries will be allowed to re-open, and organized sports can begin again. Churches, restaurants, and provincial park campgrounds have also had their capacity limits lifted. For small- and medium-sized businesses and non-profits who need additional help, our government will also be introducing supports of up to $5,000 to help cover the costs of reopening COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, I am happy to share that virtual physician visits are here to stay. This is good news for our rural areas, as it means that access to physicians is greater than it has been before. Quick trips to the doctor’s office can now be replaced by a phone call or a secure videoconference. This means Albertans can have more flexible options for accessing health care into the future. Thank you to everyone for following public health guidelines and working to keep one another healthy. It is because of you that we are able to move into a period of economic recovery for our province. As we head into stage two of relaunch, please remember to practice safe distancing and hand hygiene as we enjoy the reopening of businesses and facilities in our community. Winds of change or not
So there I was–again– moving the flowerpots on my balcony so the wind didn’t blow them over. “I am so tired of this relentless wind,” I thought. I started mentally listing all the reasons I don’t like the wind. At reason number three, I stopped. Into my mind popped the voice of my friend who grew up in Southern Saskatchewan. She glories in the wind. She says, “When the wind is blowing, it feels to me like all is right with the world.” I do not share her feeling, but it was good to remember there are other possible ways to perceive the wind. Then what popped into my mind was the phrase, “Winds of Change”. And two useful questions: What would I like the wind to blow away? And what would I like the wind to blow in? The first thing I thought was, I wish the wind would blow away all the “people-isms”. You know, racism, sexism and the multitude of beliefs that perceive some people as “less than” others; beliefs that justify inhuman actions. I wish the wind would blow away all those egodriven power-hungry leaders who think it’s okay to assassinate and bomb people they don’t like, and in the process kill and maim people who did nothing wrong except be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Then it got personal. I wish the wind would blow away all my fear that leads to procrastination and avoiding the very actions that would lead to me having more experiences I say I want. That got uncomfortable to think about, so I avoided it! I switched to, “What would I like the wind to blow in?” Well, it wasn’t exactly rainbows and unicorns, but I did imagine a world in which people’s consistent reaction to one another was openness and curiosity and belief that all of us are of equal worth. I imagined a world in which “the well-being of everyone” is the filter by which potential actions are assessed, and the ultimate goal of every venture. In that world, wars and degradation of the earth and extreme poverty and corrupt leadership would be impossible. That line of thought got personal too. I imagined myself having sudden bursts of actual maturity and doing the right thing for the right reasons, for my own well-being and, when my actions affect others, for the well-being of all who might be affected. It was uplifting. And then, perhaps not surprisingly, Bob Dylan popped into my mind. If you’re over 60, you probably remember the Bob Dylan song “Blowin’ in the Wind” which includes these words: How many roads must a man walk down Before you call him a man? How many times must the cannonballs fly Before they’re forever banned? and How many years can some people exist Before they’re allowed to be free? How many times can a man turn his head And pretend that he just doesn’t see? and How many deaths will it take ’til he knows That too many people have died? The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind. The answer is blowin’ in the wind. ***
Back in the 1960s, a generation of young people thought they could change the world for the better. Those young people, now in their 70s and older, can see positive changes. But fundamental injustices are still with us. So what would you like the wind to blow away? What would you like the wind to blow in? We can’t change everything, sometimes not even our own behaviour, but those are still two useful questions. ***

Ola Anders Sandbu June 6, 1920 ~ June 5, 2020 Ola Sandbu of Camrose (formerly Hay Lakes) passed away peacefully on Friday, June 5, 2020 at the age of 99 years. It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Ola, a man of few words, but a strong presence, who we loved so much. Ola grew up near Otta, Norway, with seven siblings. After training in agriculture and carpentry at Klones Lantbruksskole, Ola went on to manage Veikle, a large farm and home for the elderly, beautifully situated on the mountainside above Kvam. There, he met Amalie Klevstadberget, and they married in 1950, making the huge decision to begin a new life in Canada. Their destination was Hay Lakes, and they soon moved to Camrose, living downtown on 48th Street. They had their first daughter, Randi, in Camrose, then moved to Kitimat, BC, where Anne and then Mona were born. Ola had a soft spot for his daughters, supporting them whenever needed. He taught by good example without ever raising his voice. Ola was an expert carpenter and project leader, and built many homes and facilities in the Camrose area and in the town of Kitimat. He built two homes for his own family. He participated in the repair of St. Joseph Lutheran Church, where family and friends still gather today. Ola’s life dream was to farm, and eventually he took over the homestead of his uncle, Ole Sandbu, near Hay Lakes. Ola ran the productive cattle and grain farm with Amalie by his side for almost 40 years. He was well suited to farming, with a good head for numbers and was capable of fixing almost anything, especially with help from friends and neighbors. In the little free time he had, Ola demonstrated that he was a keen sportsman – ice curling, cross-county skiing and bowling were some favourite activities, and he was very good at everything he tried. He farmed until he was 80 and, upon retiring, had more time for camping, fishing, floor curling and playing cards, his preferred pastimes with his friends. He was loved and respected by neighbours who knew they could trust and count on him. He made friends for life when he joined the Sons of Norway club, with its folk dancing and many other events. Ola was the “strong silent type”, and many will also remember Ola for his gentle sense of humour. Ola returned to Norway for the first time, 18 years after he emigrated to Canada. After that, he visited Norway several times to visit family, and also Sweden to spend time with his youngest daughter and family. Grandchildren Alexander and Kristina have fond memories of their visits to Canada, too, where their strong, gentle and loving grandfather introduced them to farm life. Ola will be lovingly remembered by his partner of almost 20 years, Yvonne Nelson and family; his daughters Randi Sandbu of Edmonton, Anne Sandbu of Camrose, and Mona Tirén (Jonas) of Uppsala, Sweden; and grandchildren Alexander Tirén and Kristina Tirén of Sweden. Ola was predeceased by Amalie, his wife of 50 years; parents Anders and Ragnhild Sandbu; and siblings Martha, Hans, Lovise, Pål, Anna, Rolf and Gunnar. Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to St. Joseph Lutheran Church, Hay Lakes. A memorial service will be held at a later date. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

ALS touches close to home, Lori Huolt’s story By Lori Larsen
More often than not we don’t think about the devastating impact diseases, such as ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), can have on, not only the person suffering with it, but the people who care for them, until it hits closer to home. For acquaintances, friends and family of Camrosian Lori Huolt, ALS has come to full light as has the need to bring about awareness and invoke donating to fund research, equipment and living aids, as Lori battles the crippling disease. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes muscle weakness, paralysis, and ultimately, respiratory failure. ALS attacks certain cells in the brain and the spinal cord needed to keep muscles moving which leads to early signs and symptoms that include muscle cramps and twitching, weakness in the extremities and difficulty speaking or swallowing. Sadly as the disease progresses it affects the person’s ability to move any part of their body and the ability to speak or communicate with anything other than their eyes. As swallowing becomes virtually impossible sufferers will completely rely on a feeding tube for nutrition. Lori’s story began in the summer of 2018 when she began experiencing slurred speech and weakness in her right hand. “I was sent to see a specialist in Edmonton and received the news that I was diagnosed with ALS,” noted Lori in an email interview. “This news was devastating but by the strength of my family and friends I am able to find the determination to fight this disease.”
Currently there is no known cure for ALS but funding for research has made a big difference in the lives of those who battle the disease and those who care for them. “I am supported by the ALS Society of Alberta where I have an amazing team of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, speech therapists, and nutritionists. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Seniors message to grads By Lori Larsen
Connecting seniors to youth can go a long way in breaking down barriers, promoting healthy growth in youth and helping eliminate loneliness and isolation among seniors. Seasons Retirement Communities decided to take an otherwise disappointing year for 2020 Grade 8, high school and college and university graduating students, and turn it into an opportunity to lend purpose to seniors and offer valuable life lessons to youth. To help provide perspective for some recent graduates, Seasons Retirement Communities decided to call on some of their residents to share their life lessons. The initiative, titled “Seasons Seniors to Seniors,” had residents reflect on the past and how their life lessons may provide some guidance and hope for new graduates. “Who better to turn to for advice than our nation’s seniors? ” said Seasons COO LeighAnne Voll. “Not only do our residents have amazing advice, but we know that helping others and sharing stories are two important ways to prevent loneliness.” Seasons Camrose resident Jarvis Wiuff shared his own message. “It takes a lot of thinking to discover what is best for you, and even this may change as you and the world change.

Camrose Seasons resident Jarvis Wiuff holds up a sign for his video debut. The words speak volumes.
You just have to keep your eyes open and be willing to adjust.” Similar messages from seniors were posted on the Seasons Facebook page, featuring videos of the senior with a photo of them as a graduate and a white board displaying their personal, uplifting message. To view some of the messages, visit www.facebook.com/seasonsretirement/ or to learn more about the initiative on the Seasons website at www. seasonsretirement.com. Seasons will be connecting with local schools and sharing uplifting messages via social media to through the end of June.

Situated on a large pie-shaped lot, the home has tons of room to roam both inside and outside. Stunning updates wait for you inside the sprawling home that features hardwood and tile flooring throughout the main living area. Vaulted/beamed ceilings open up the living room that features a cozy gas fireplace. The wellappointed kitchen has a centre island is perfect for serving family get-togethers or for children to sit at and have breakfast or do homework. Tons of cabinets means lots of storage space and stainless steel appliances and Corian countertops add style. Just off the kitchen is a convenient main floor laundry and two-piece powder room. A large formal dining room and family room share the main floor and make larger family gatherings so easy. Patio doors lead off the living room out to a large deck where you can extend living to the great outdoors.
Three bedrooms, including a goodsized master suite with walk-in closet and a three-piece en suite, keep younger children close on the main floor. The basement is completely finished with a four-piece bathroom, large recreation family room, complete with a kitchenette that would be handy for older children wanting a little independence, a fourth bedroom and an office area, that could easily be converted to a fifth bedroom, all provide plenty of space and options for the whole family.
