Morning and evening temperatures reveal that the end of most people’s favourite season for 2020 will soon be in the rear view mirror. It’s important to take time to sit back and deliciously savour the beauty of the season and the fruits of your labour – gardening, landscaping or simply making the most of an unprecedented year. As fall nears, we offer a look through the lens of Mirror Lake – a reminder of the beauty around us and a suggestion to you to take a walk around this jewel, because photos cannot do it justice.

Camrose Connector back in service

By Lori Larsen

Camrose and area residents will be happy to hear that the Camrose Connector is back on the road after a temporary suspension of the service due to COVID-19. The service launched approximately two years ago, and now the City of Camrose and Red Arrow are announcing its relaunch. In an effort to ensure the safety of passengers and drivers, Red Arrow, operator of the service, has introduced a Safely Clean program including the following regulations and requirements. Face masks will be mandatory for the entire duration of the trip. The Government of Alberta has set up a mask distribution initiative through its transit partners as part of its relaunch strategy. Therefore, the Camrose Connector will be offering free non-medical masks during their route. For more information, visit alberta.ca/masks. Social distancing will be enforced on all vehicles, allowing a maximum of 11 people on each trip. Passengers will undergo a quick Health and Safety Screening to ensure they are not experiencing symptoms of illness and/or

have not travelled outside of Canada in the past 14 days. Enhanced cleaning measures will be adhered to, including an electrostatic spray of the entire interior in between each trip. “This shuttle has opened up educational, healthcare, employment, recreational and social opportunities for our residents,” said Mayor Norm Mayer. “I know that Camrosians are eager for those opportunities to open up again in these trying times.” Red Arrow business development director John Stepovy said, “The residents in this community have been asking us to resume this service that is essentially a lifeline to healthcare and education services, as well as visiting family and friends. We’re also extremely excited to be resuming this partnership with the City of Camrose in a joint effort to safely connect Camrose residents to Edmonton and the entire network of Red Arrow routes that span the province.” The Camrose Connector’s first “return to service trip” will depart Camrose on Wednesday, Sept. 9 from the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus at

By Arnold Malone

I once read an article by an anthropologist who made the case that race does not exist. He offered that when we think of race, we imagine different species such as different plants or animals. His contention was that what we observe today as “race” is merely adaptation. From his work, he proffered that the humans emerged somewhere in Africa, and that those humans, in time, migrated north and south. As they migrated to new environments, their bodies needed to adapt. Dark-skinned persons in less sunlight had difficulty absorbing enough vitamin D. Those who had lighter pigmentation had a better a chance of survival. Then the further north the migration moved, the lighter the skin evolved. The Nordic countries have many fair-skinned persons. The article fascinated me since it had some possibility, given the million-year duration of human existence. Importantly, if all humans have derived from the same base, then we should be gracious towards our brothers and sisters. As a child, I lived in a region that was entirely Caucasians. During my university years, I came in direct contact with persons of colour and a good number were fine friends. When you truly become friends, you can talk and not notice colour. The connection is in the eyes. When the eyes signal friendship, nothing else is unusual. Moreover, we can all be more inclusive and encourage a wider level of friendship by engaging with others. When we send a friendly signal, we greatly enhance the chance of receiving a like signal in return. What I know with certainty is that our acceptance or rejection of others, based on appearance, is a learned behaviour. It is not an innate characteristic. If you are a doubter, then observe children on a playground as they intermingle with others of mixed races. In my second year of university, my roommate Jay and I were offered an award to attend an encampment for citizenship at the Berkley Campus in California. One day, we saw a poster on a power pole advertising that Martin Luther King was to speak at the Cow Palace across the Bay in San Francisco. Jay and I decided to attend. We were among the one per cent who were Caucasians along with 22,000 African Americans. Reverend King gave a rousing hour-long speech. The only line I can quote this many years later is, “White people ask us to wait just a little longer. We have waited over 200 years. How much longer do we have to wait?” When the speech was over, Jay and I got on the first of three busses that would connect us back to the campus. The bus was filled to over capacity with African Americans, along with two nervous white boys. The chatter was highly charged. Persons were excitedly voicing their disdain about their oppression from white people. We were the only white persons on the bus. There was some relief when we transferred to the second bus and the mix of races became a little more equal. There was not one single reason for our concern. No one directed any sharp comments towards us, yet we were a tiny minority in a worked up crowd so we were anxious. Our previous notion of a minority had reversed. We were the minority. I now have a small sense of how coloured people feel when their safety is connected to unending shades of fear. Over time, our society has gained some understanding about our misguided opinions that have robbed us from the fullness of our humanity. It has also dictated how much more we need to change to reap the reward of a fully inclusive society.

Thank you to City councillors who declined a raise at this time. It’s heartening when people in power show more concern for the community than their own reward. But, as often happens, there is another side to this decision. As long as we pay councillors less than a living wage, people who can’t afford to do this as a sideline can’t afford to run. I believe City councillors made this choice out of generosity, but we also need to pave the way for council to represent the broader Camrose population. Deanne Morrow, Camrose Our country

When traveling in the United States, you cannot find news or weather for Canada on US television. In Canada, half of the news and weather is American. I am Canadian, not American. Their problems are not my problems. We did not have a civil war over slavery and had hundreds of slaves escape the US and come to Canada to be free people through the underground railroad. We accepted them here. During the war between native Americans and the US Army, hundreds of native Americans escaped to Canada. We accepted them here. During the Vietnam War, hundreds of Americans came to Canada as draft dodgers. We accepted them here. Americans want to destroy its history, riot, loot and burn cities– let them. Do not let this stupidity come to Canada. We are Canadians, not Americans. Statues are part of our history. They are put up for the good things the person has done for the country. We cannot judge them for things that are not acceptable at this time today. Show me a person who has not done something wrong in their lifetime and learned it was wrong. This is called growth and history. No person is perfect.

There was a slave ship captain that dealt in the slave trade for years. One day, he realized slavery was wrong and the things he had done were wrong. He changed his life. He was the one to write the song “Amazing Grace”. That is part of history. If you have no history, there is nothing to improve, correct or learn from. You cannot change or hide history. To change the names of cities, towns, buildings, streets, etc., would be non-ending. Next we will be burning books. Destroying the pyramids, Roman Colosseum and anything else slaves built would never end. In the end, we will have no history and nothing to improve. We will be perfect. Crime, theft and shooting are on the rise in Canada. There are people who want to defund police. Are you out of your mind? This is Canada, not the United States. Glenn Dunn, Camrose Leadership race

Way back when I was filling out my mail-in Conservative leadership race, I just had received a friendly call from Erin O’Toole’s campaign office by this very friendly young lady. She took the time to listen to my concerns for over 15 minutes. I was clueless who I should vote for, so I put Erin O’Toole for my first selection, thinking this underdog should at least get one vote. I placed Peter MacKay as second, which at first was my first selection. After the vote, I was really impressed with who this guy really was. I had no idea that this man had a seat and he was in one of the ridings in Ontario where the party needs to win seats in. I thought Peter MacKay still had a seat in Parliament. Now that I found out that O’Toole came first in Alberta, I am beginning to see why our Premier endorsed this candidate. It is a good sign when my friends who

are NDP supporters tell me that they are not too pleased that this man won. They want a leader whom their party could defeat in the next election. If there is a man who could lead a majority Conservative government, he is the one. Canadians go back to the voting booths in our next election, which will be held by the spring of 2023. Lorne Vanderwoude, Camrose Recent visit

On a recent visit to Camrose to visit my parents in one of the senior homes, I was shocked and dismayed at the apparent lack of concern and precaution to keep this pandemic at bay. At the home, they only recently allowed visitors, they were good taking temps and having visitors fill out questionnaires. Yet I go out into the community and no one seems to be concerned or care. I was in Superstore, Home Hardware, Peavey Mart and Save-On, no one was wearing a mask or social distancing – neither staff nor customers. When I stated my concern to one staff member, I was told she had heard that Walmart was trying to, but they really were not enforcing it. In Edmonton and Sherwood Park, there is a 95 per cent compliance rate. I don’t understand why the Camrose community believes they are immune to this crisis. In a community that has such a large portion of elderly residents, you could have so much to lose. I think about my parents’ caregivers out and about in this environment and it scares me. It only takes one small match to start a wildfire and it might only take a cashier or clerk to start a COVID wildfire to race through your community. I will not be doing any more shopping on my trips into town anymore. Time to wake up, Camrose. Dale Fournier, Sherwood Park

realcanadianliquorstore.ca An attention getter

There’s nothing like an unauthorized charge appearing on a credit card statement to get your attention. So, there I was, early one morning, quickly checking a credit card balance before I got on to other things. And there it was–a charge from a company I have never heard of. Hmmm. Fortunately, the charge was not a large amount. However, it was worrisome that a company I didn’t recognize could make a charge to my account. I had no memory of providing the credit card information. Googled the company name. Nope, I didn’t recognize it. The site had only one page and you couldn’t tell what the company actually did. More worrisome. Phoned the 1-800 number on the credit card. Pleasant surprise. After listening to “Press 1 for…,” and “Press 6 for…,” I pressed a number and imagine–a human being actually answered.

I explained why I was calling. The credit card man pulled up the account and could see the item I was calling about. He too checked the company website and couldn’t tell what the company actually did. I repeated that I had never heard of the company and had no idea what the charge was about. His recommendation: Cancel the credit card so no further charges could be made to that card. Request a new card with a new number. I knew that was the right thing to do. However, several vendors have had my permission for years to charge their fixed monthly fee to this credit card. It was going to be a hassle to notify them about the updated number. Heavy sigh. Also, it could be up to 10 business days between the time I reported the unauthorized charge and the time I actually receive the new credit card with a new number. During that time, no charges will be accepted. What about automatic charges that are scheduled during that 10 days? Well, repeat, no charges will be accepted during that time. In other words, declined. Yuck. Another heavy sigh. Have to contact those vendors to explain what’s happened and see if they can delay their automatic charge by a few days so their charges don’t get declined. No way around it. Need to contact those vendors. Do email and phone exchanges. There are some satisfactory results and some less than satisfactory results. ***

Regroup. My early morning “quick check before I get on to other things” has now eaten up more than two hours. Appointments are happening and those other things are still not looked after. An energy-suck and time-suck. Heavy sigh. And that’s added to the thing the evening before that was supposedly set up on a website, but actually was not set up. And the Zoom call I hosted that somehow had the password changed so nobody could get on the call, which ate up 20 minutes of everybody’s time to get sorted and thus short-changed the time available for the purpose of the call. Another heavy sigh. ***

Okay, a little perspective. Compared to global pandemic, tanking economy, wildfires or an unarmed person being shot in the back and killed by a police officer, none of these credit card or technology glitches are a big deal. On the other hand, since right now we are all discombobulated by things we didn’t ask for and cannot control, it doesn’t take much to bump us over the overwhelm point. What to do? Well, a short walk through some trees, with bird sounds in the background, was helpful. So was hearing a one-liner that made me laugh. And remembering times when everything fell apart and it still all turned out okay. ***

Question of the week: What do you do to regain your equilibrium at times when just one more small thing bumps you over your edge? ***

I’d love to hear from you! If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.

Animal shelter is kept hopping By Lori Larsen

Tending to homeless pets is a full-time job for the Camrose & Area Animal Shelter, which continues to stay busy with animal care and housing, seeking permanent homes for residents of the Shelter and fundraising to ensure the it continues the great work it has been doing. “We held a very successful Spay and Microchip program funded by grants we received from Battle River Community Foundation (BRCF), ATB Financial and Walmart,” said Shelter treasurer Lynn Horsman. “The Camrose Veterinary Hospital gave us a healthy discount and we were able to ‘fix’ 30 mama cats.” Join the Shelter for a fun-filled fundraising event, City Wide Scavenger Hunt on Sept. 12. For more details, visit the Shelter Facebook page or to register, telephone 780-6798792. “You’ll see Camrose in a different light and we promise you a fun time. It is a great family adventure.” You can also take some time on Sept. 12 to drop off your empty bottles at the parking area of Pet Valu and help support the Camrose & Area Animal Shelter, while cleaning out those recycle bins. Curb-side pickup is also available. All you have to do is leave a message on the Shelter Facebook page or text for pickup at 780679-8792. It is incredibly easy to help out some furry friends.

“Donations of money, supplies and food continue to get us up each morning and drive us towards our goals,” said Horsman. “More and more people are dropping in to bring us bottles, money and food.” Tax receipts are available upon request. Love a good garage sale? How about one for a good cause. On Oct. 1, 2 and 3, the Animal Shelter will be hosting a Gigantic Garage Sale with all proceeds going towards the Shelter. “We are looking for clean, saleable items that we can sell,” explained Horsman. “We will have a dropoff address 10 days before the sale, so start saving your stuff for a great cause, but we do request no large appliances or furniture.”

Visit the Shelter Facebook page to view the adorable little faces that would love a forever home. Currently, the Shelter is at full capacity with cats, kittens, and guinea pigs. “You wouldn’t believe the noise at mealtime,” laughed Horsma n. “Thankfully we have an active, dedicated Board which volunteers untold hours behind the scene. “The shelter cannot function without a lot of volunteers, all with different skills and mindsets, but all passionate about animals.” Currently the Shelter is seeking a volunteer coordinator. “It’s a big job, but we would all cheer the house down if someone stepped forward.” Grateful for the many volu nteers and the continued support from the c om mu n it y, Camrose & Area Animal Shelter staff and volunteers look forward to continuing to assist those furry friends Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster in need. Comedy shows return to Lougheed By Murray Green

The Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre will soon filled with laughter again. Two Yuk-Yuk’s performances will be coming to Camrose for live stand up comedy nights. The comedy series, each featuring three comedians, will have one show on Sept. 17 and another on Oct. 15, both beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be limited to ensure the safety of patrons. Headlining the event is Alberta comedian, Sean Lecomber, a favourite on CBC’s The Debaters. Sean

has written for This Hour Has 22 Minutes and he has appeared at the Halifax and Winnipeg Comedy festivals. Comedian Sterling Scott is the emcee of the first night and he is often described as a high-energy performer and a crowd favourite. He’s considered one of comedy’s rising stars. The night will also feature Edmonton comedian, Brent Ayton, who has won acclaim as Edmonton’s Funniest Person. Along with handhygiene reminders, physical distancing markers

have been added to the lobby and ticketing for cohort groups has been created. The cohort group option allows ticket-buyers an opportunity to sit within pods of two to five people, while creating physical distance spacing for the next group. “We wanted to ensure an easy way for patrons to purchase tickets, while also remaining within provincial safety guidelines,” said Nick Beach, general manager of the Lougheed Centre.

Alberta turned 115 this month By Murray Green

On Sept. 1, 115 years ago, Alberta became a province. “Alberta’s history of human habitation dates back more than 10,000 years when the first Indigenous people migrated to Alberta to find a land rich in bounty. To this day, as millions more people have made Alberta home, it remains a land rich in resources, culture and human endeavour,” said

Premier Jason Kenney. “Albertans have celebrated years of growth and economic prosperity, but also the challenges of the Spanish Flu pandemic, drought, global depression and the loss of young lives defending freedom in two world wars, Korea and Afghanistan. This past year, we have faced the challenges of the COVID pandemic, collapse in oil prices and a global recession,” he added.

“Yet, as Albertans have always done–from the protracted fight to wrestle ownership of our own natural resources from the federal government in 1930, to our responsible civic response to slowing the spread of COVID today–we will once again emerge stronger,” said Premier Kenney. He officially declared Sept. 1 as Alberta Day to celebrate the province.

Arnett enjoys his 1971 GMC Custom Camper By Murray Green

Barry Arnett of Hay Lakes owns a classic 1971 GMC Custom Camper truck. “We bought this truck in High Level. A fellow had it restored in High Level and then he had some health issues with a stroke. He had to part with it,” said Barry. General Motors Truck Company (GMC), formally the GMC Division of General Motors LLC, is a division of the American automobile manufacturer General Motors (GM) that primarily focuses on trucks and utility vehicles. “I was quite taken with the body work and the paint job they did. I’ve had a few mechanical issues with it. I re-did the back brakes. The transmission was leaking, so I got that resealed. I had to repair a few odd items here and there,” explained Barry. GMC vehicles are almost always sold alongside Buick vehicles at joint dealerships, allowing the same dealer to market both upscale cars and trucks. “Basically, it is a nice truck. It has 308 gears in the rear end, so at 60 to 70 miles an hour, it travels pretty nice. It has a rebuilt 350 engine with a mild cam and a turbo hydromatic 350 transmission in it. It has a positraction rear end with the 308 gears. When

CUSTOM CAMPER

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Barry Arnett of Hay Lakes loves to cruise with his 1971 GMC Custom Camper truck and attend local car shows when they take place. He is a big fan of the square body design that Chevrolet and GMC trucks had from 1967 to 1972.

the cam kicks down, it goes pretty good,” shared Barry. “I grew up with these kind of trucks. I like the 1967 to 1972 trucks and quite like that style. I like the styling of the square

FUN FACTS

Numerous changes occurred in 1971. First came another new grille design (the egg crate) for Chevrolet trucks and black paint over portions of the GMC grille. Second, an additional trim package was introduced: the Cheyenne. On GMC models, this was equivalent to the Sierra. These packages consisted mostly of comfort features–nicer interiors, more padding and insulation, carpet, chrome trim, and upper and lower side molding and tailgate trim. In 1971, it was the first year for AM/FM radios factory installed. Finally, the front brakes on all light-duty trucks were switched from drum brakes to disc brakes, resulting in much less brake fade under heavy use. While prior C/K half-ton trucks had used a sixlug bolt pattern for the wheels, two-wheel-drive models switched to a five-lug pattern common to Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Cadillac passenger cars. The half ton 4 x 4 retained the six-lug bolt pattern. This bolt pattern would remain the standard through the end of the C/K series (along with the Chevrolet/GMC vans). Also, Chevrolet changed the 396 V8 emblem designation to 400 V8 for 400 and 402 engines. Between 1962 and 1972, most GMC vehicles were equipped with quad headlights, while their Chevrolet clones were equipped with dual headlights.

body, but they had lots of issues with rust,” he added. GMC traces its history to the 1902 founding of the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company in Pontiac, Michigan. In 1909, William C. Durant gained control of Rapid Motor Vehicle Company and made it a subsidiary of his General Motors Company. He has plans for some upgrades. “I would like to move the fuel tank back and dual exhausts because it just has single exhaust. Nothing really major to it,” he said. “What attracted me is that the previous owner spent money on the body and paint. The wood flooring in the back was well done, it costs about $2,000 just for the flooring. They had receipts for the build. It is hard to do them for less if you are doing them right,” Barry said. While many GMC and Chevrolet trucks are mechanically identical, GMC is positioned as a pre-

mium offering to the mainstream Chevrolet brand. “They are nice trucks and it rides like a car. I don’t drive as often as I would like to. I’m still farming, so I don’t get to a

lot of car shows. Hopefully, I’ve got a few more years to go to more car shows. I really enjoy this atmosphere. It takes me back to the ’60s and ’70s. It was a great time.”

ÉCCHS Trojans practice until season starts By Murray Green

The École Camrose Composite High School Trojans football team will be practicing this fall to prepare for a future season. “There are no games or mixing of schools in the fall, but there is a possibility of a spring football season if the pandemic cooperates. We will have to wait and see,” said coach Adam Belanger. “In consultation with the École Camrose Composite High School, our Central Alberta Football League and in conjunction with Alberta Health Services and Alberta Schools Athletic Association guidelines, the Trojans will be running a fall football camp. Right now, we are scheduled to go every week on Monday and Wednesday starting on Sept. 14, with our last week on Oct. 13 and 15. We are planning for a 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. practice time, with the first hour focusing on skills and drills and the last hour, we are going to split up into teams to play flag football,” shared coach Belanger. “We will not be issuing any equipment at the start of camp to focus on skill development, footwork and learning the game. This is a very different time that we are in and we are approaching this camp in a different way to get the best out of a bad situation.” The camp will be following school guidelines. “We will be sanitizing the shared equipment at the end of every practice in accordance with the ASAA guidelines.” Each player is to bring a mask in case the camp is moved into the school because of bad weather. “We will be having health checks at the start of every practice. As of now, our players who do not go to ÉCCHS will not be allowed to participate in our cohort.” More information can be found on the Camrose Trojans football website at camrosetrojansfootball. teampages.com. If anyone has any questions, they are encouraged to reach out. The contact information is on the website.

Suicide prevention week recognized By Lori Larsen

Join the world with bringing awareness to the often sensitive topic of suicide during World Suicide Awareness Day, Sept. 10. While many people do not want to face the thought that someone they know is contemplating ending their life, the first step in helping them get the help and support they need is to recognize warning signs. “There are more among us who have contemplated suicide than we would imagine,” remarked Hospice Society of Camrose and District grief and bereavement and program coordinator Bill Harder. “The person struggling with suicidal ideation is like you. We pass them on the street every day. They are our neighbour, our friend, our family member. They need us to see them, reach out to them, connect with them.” The following information, provided by Alberta Health Services, outlines some of the more common characteristics of someone who may attempt suicide. People are more likely to attempt suicide if they are: male; have attempted suicide before; have had a family member who has ended their life or who attempted suicide; have had or have mental health problems such as severe depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or anxiety; have been through family violence, including physical or sexual abuse; drink a lot of alcohol or use drugs; or are veterans or members of the armed services. Events that may put people at greater risk for suicide include: changes in life such as the death of a partner or good friend, retirement, divorce, or problems with money; the diagnosis of a serious physical illness, such as cancer or heart disease, or a new physical disability; severe and long-lasting pain; loss of independence or not being able to get around without help and living alone; or not having friends or social contacts. Warning signs

For adults who may be at risk, the following warning signs of suicide may exist. • Planning to or saying they want to hurt or kill themselves or someone else. • Talking, writing, reading, or drawing about death, including writing suicide notes and talking about items that can cause physical harm, such as pills, guns, or knives. • Saying they have no hope, they feel trapped, or there is no point in “going on”. • Buying guns or bullets, stockpiling medicines,

or taking other action to prepare for a suicide attempt. They may have a new interest in guns or other weapons. • Drinking more alcohol or using drugs, including prescription medicines. • No longer wanting to see people and wanting to be alone a lot. • No longer taking care of themselves or following medical advice. • Giving away their things and/or hurrying to complete a will. Warning signs in children, teens and young adults may be different and may include running away from home or doing risky or dangerous things, such as driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Even the mere mention of suicide should be taken seriously and if someone you know is threatening suicide, get help immediately. Call 911, a suicide hotline, or the police. Stay with the person, or ask someone you trust to stay with the person, until the crisis has passed. Encourage the person to seek professional help. Do not argue with the person or challenge the person. Always take the threat seriously. Tell the person that you don’t want him or her to die. Talk about the situation as openly as possible. There are steps we can all take to prevent suicide or attempts. Begin by being willing to listen, and help the person find the help they need. Don’t be afraid to ask, “What is the matter?” or bring up the subject of suicide. There is no evidence that talking about suicide leads to suicidal thinking or suicide. Remove all guns from the home, or lock guns and bullets up in different places. Get rid of any prescription and non-prescription medicines that are not being used. Provide the person with the names and contact information of organizations that can provide them with the help an support they need. “Death by suicide is preventable,” noted Harder. “The formula is simple –build connection, create meaning, extend compassion, employ listening. Enacting these, we reach into the dark places of people’s lives with hope and renewal.” Health Link 811 or the Mental Health Help Line at 1-877-303-264 is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Text and online chat options are available for all Alberta youth through Calgary ConnecTeen, Monday to Friday, from 3 until 10 p.m. and Saturday and

Sunday, from noon until 10 p.m. Visit calgaryconnect een.com or text 587-3332724. The federal First Nations and Inuit Hope for Wellness Help Line at 1-855-242-3310 is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Clients can also access an online chat at www.hopeforwellness.ca. Support is also available for caretakers of people who are at risk for suicide. Caretakers can reach out for help by calling Health Link at 811 or the Mental Health Help Line at 1-877303-2642. “Death by suicide often results in a response of shame and guilt among family, friends, and even professional supports,” said Harder. “These are reduced through vulnerable, open conversation.” The following are a few organizations available in Camrose and area that offer support for people who may be contemplating ending their lives or caregivers. • Hospice Society of Camrose and District 780-608-0636 www.camrosehospice.org

He was a proud grandpa to twelve grandchildren Adam, Matthew (Cassie), Hayley, Kristen, Kennedy, Joshua, Justin, Amy, Geordan, Jack, Julia and Nicolas. Those of you who know Cliff’s story know he celebrated two birthdays. The day he was born and the day he had his lung transplant. He was going on seventeen years post-op of his transplant and was very proud of that. He was a fighter to the end. He will be remembered for his love of fishing, woodworking, an enormous laugh and smile and, of course, Molson Canadian beer. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Gail; children Anita (Jim) Kupka of Camrose, Murry (Carolyn) Felt of Calgary, Charlene (Chris) Andrew of Red Deer, Sandra Weatherall of Edmonton, Patrick (Suzanne) Felt of Rocky Mountain House, and Michelle Chahor of Calgary; twelve grandchildren; brothers James (Edna) Felt of Lacombe, and Gordon (Alice) Felt of Calgary; and numerous nieces and nephews. SingAble goes online this fall By Lori Larsen

The amazing voices of Camrose SingAble choristers will be filling the air again, only this time, the airwaves, when the popular community program, partnered by U of A Augustana Campus choral program and the Camrose Association for Community Living, goes virtual. “Moving into the third season, SingAble–a multigenerational community inclusion choir–courageously welcomes all who love to sing to virtually join spirits and voices together for an exciting term of musical participation through the wonders of technology,” said SingAble director and University of Alberta Augustana Campus associate professor (music), Dr. Ardelle Ries. Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 6, SingAble choristers will continue to explore a wide variety of repertoire– from familiar folk and

popular songs, to hymns, to jazz through “SingChronos” Tuesday evening virtual rehearsals. “With community building and the celebration of diversity as core objectives, in addition to virtual rehearsals, the SingAble leadership team will provide online and on demand musical experiences,” explained Ries. “The SingAble membership will examine the dynamic nature of the human singing voice, the wonders of multigenerational singing, approaches to building musical skills, playlist sharing, and discuss the vital importance of music in our lives.” As an added bonus, SingAble will embark on a virtual choir tour, meeting special guests renowned for their work in holistic music-making practices through song. “Our guests will join SingAble remotely from

across the country and around the world. A basic form of human expression, SingAble will advocate for singing as an essential service to the soul. “As we continue to negotiate this global pandemic, the SingAble 2020 repertoire will focus on a central theme positively inspired by the World Singing Day theme for 2020, What a Wonderful World.” Anyone interested in joining a celebration of community and music through song are invited to join SingAble and enjoy connecting with others from the comfort of your home every Tuesday from Oct. 6 to Dec. 8 from 7 until to 8 p.m. Tuition is free. For more information, visit www.cafcl.ca/singable-registration/ or call the CAFCL office at 780672-0257. Music lends itself to anyone wishing to borrow its worth.

UPLIFTING MUSIC Dr. Ardelle Ries is ready to lead SingAble into a virtual season this fall.

Students return to local schools By Murray Green

It’s that time for the start of another school year. However, this year may look a little different. Besides the usual allotment of school supplies, parents also should pack an extra mask. Every student in Grade 4 and above will be receiving two masks from the Alberta Government. It is an expectation that the student will have these masks available for use during the school day. If a student’s mask is torn or is lost, the school can provide a disposable mask for the student to wear for the remainder of the day. However, schools do not have the resources needed to supply masks to students every day. Parents are strongly encouraged to pack an extra mask for their child. The first day of school for Battle River School Division students was on Thursday, Sept. 3. At home learning programs started on Tuesday, Sept. 8. The Elk Island Catholic School Division began classes on Sept. 8. Cornerstone Chris-

tian Academy started on Aug. 3. The Alberta Government has mandated that all staff and all students in Grade 4 and above must wear masks when they are on the school bus and when they are moving through hallways and common areas of schools where they are coming into contact with others. Masks are not required when students are in classrooms, as long as the students are seated at their desks and maintaining as much physical distance as possible. When students are involved in activities that require them to be interacting more closely, or when a staff member and student are working in close proximity, a mask should be worn. Students in Kindergarten to Grade 3 are not required to wear masks, but are encouraged to do so. However, split Grade 3 and 4 classes may require Grade 3 students to wear masks. Check with your school for more details on returning to school.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

EICS welcomes federal funding for schools By Murray Green

Elk Island Catholic Schools (EICS) is welcoming the $2.3 million in federal funding that was announced on Aug. 26 to help support COVID-19 preventative needs within schools. “We are very pleased that the federal government provided this funding to our school division during this pandemic as everything we can have in place to protect our students and staff is such a priority during this time,” expressed EICS board of trustees chair Ted Paszek. EICS administration will be reviewing how the funds will be distributed across the division in anticipation of the two installments, which are expected at the end of September and in December. The EICS board of trustees will be meeting to discuss the funding with the EICS senior leadership team at the Sept. 16 EICS public monthly meeting. “Clearly, all schools are facing significantly higher costs related to COVID-19, and this federal funding will be directed to assist with the increased costs that the pandemic has created. At the meeting, the board will be considering increased staffing costs, cleaning protocols and the addition of online programming through St. Isidore Learning Centre,” stated chair Paszek. EICS has been planning for the re-entry of schools since May and has put significant safety protocols in place in all of the divisional schools, sites and buses. All information regarding EICS school re-entry is available on the website www.eics. ab.ca/coronavirus-information-in-eics.

Cooler temperatures, leaves turning colour and the sound of geese flying overhead are all indications of autumn and the onset of hunting season. In an effort to promote the sport of ethical hunting and fishing, the 2020 Waterfowl Warm-up event was held on Aug. 20 in Tofield at Beaverhills Sporting Clays, hosted by the Alberta Conservation Association. The event brought together hunting enthusiasts and wildlife management stakeholders for a fun-filled day of competition and an opportunity to promote and educate the long-standing sport of hunting. This year’s event also provided an opportunity to promote Alberta’s new sandhill crane hunt, which began on Sept. 1 in more than 50 Wildlife Management Units (WMU) in southern and east central Alberta. The hunt will run concurrently with Alberta’s waterfowl season. Present for the event was Province of Alberta minister of environment and parks Jason Nixon and Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely.

and County) exploring recreational activities closer to home, 2020 is bound to be a busy year. Hunters and trappers are advised to check with the recently updated Alberta Wildlife Act (Wildlife Regulation) or the 2020 Alberta Guide to Hunting Regulations at albertaregulations.ca/huntingregs/ to ensure they are in compliance with laws and regulations intended to manage and conserve wildlife and protect the rights of property owners. Fishing is another favourite pastime of many Albertans and guests to the province and seems to be gaining in popularity. So far, 2020 has seen an increase in fishing licence sales of roughly 30 per cent over the previous year. With recent investments in Alberta’s four fish hatcheries totalling more than $40 million, fishing in Alberta will soon be supported by an even larger and more diverse provincial stocking program, which should result in even more fishing opportunities, and the spin-off economic benefits they provide, while assisting in the recovery of species at risk.

Back to school this year has taken on an entirely different look as teachers and staff escort students in small groups back into the classroom. Donning masks and keeping two metres apart, students seemed to be quite excited to get back into the school and resume some degree of normalcy, while anxious parents did their part by remaining outside the fenced compound and waving from a distance. Photo taken outside the perimeter of school grounds.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Camrose and District Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Branch District Officer Lorne Rinkel prepares for a busy season of hunting.

The Waterfowl Warmup gave Minister Nixon an opportunity to sit down for conversation with representatives of the Alberta Conservation Association and Alberta Professional Outfitters Society. Alberta’s 10-year resident hunting license sales average has been positive, going from approximately 115,000 to 122,000, with a peak of 128,000 in 2015. Hunting license sales in 2019 were over 122,000. Camrose and area is no exception for hunting enthusiasts and with the recent opening of archery for big game and waterfowl hunting season (Sept. 1) on Camrose wildlife management units, and with many residents (City

An increase of interest in both hunting and fishing brings with it an increase in desire to access private land. Anyone wishing to access private land, whether that be for hunting, fishing, trapping, guiding or other recreational activity, are reminded that they must first obtain permission from landowners and or representatives thereof, prior to gaining access. If you suspect any poaching of wildlife or serious public or private land abuse, call the toll free Report A Poacher line at 1-800-642-3800 or visit alberta.ca/report-a-poacher. Newly renovated condo

I got pulled over by the police today. I was apparently his first speeder, because when he got to my window, he said, “I’ve been waiting all day for you.” I said, “I got here as fast as I could.” He let me go. Do you ever forget to hide your expressions for a minute and then you’re like, “Woah, I did not mean to make that face out loud!” For my birthday, my children gave me an alarm clock that swears at me instead of buzzing. It is quite a rude awakening.

The good-sized master suite also has a large window for waking up to sunshine, a walk-in closet and fourpiece en suite.

An extra bedroom can double as a guest room, office or hobby room. In-suite laundry means you have all the conveniences at your fingertips. Sit and enjoy the warm morning sunshine on your good-sized deck, then prepare for barbecuing in the evening. The location is within easy walking distance to downtown Camrose shopping and other services, and Jubilee Park for your daily strolls. Other amenities include a building guest room for overnight visitors, a wonderfully equipped workout room and a common social area where you can visit with the friendly neighbours. Now is the time to own your own home with this condo located at 462550 Street #203B priced at $159,900. I remember as a kid my dad got fired for theft from his job as a road worker. I refused to believe he could do such a thing, but when I got home, the signs were all there. Parents live for the tiny vacations from their toddlers. Like when you put your kids in their car seat and you close their door. And that little walk around to your own door … it’s like a Carnival Cruise! Now they’re saying if you’ve survived COVID, the government wants your plasma. No sir, they ain’t takin’ my TV! Do not let them take your temperature on your forehead when you enter Camrose Safeway. My wife sent me in for lettuce and apples and I came out with six T-bone steaks, four bags of potato chips and 4 litres of butterscotch ripple ice cream. I wish my siblings would stop calling me spoiled just because I’m the baby of the family. The fact is, my parents kept having children until they found one they liked. It is SO not my issue. I told my wife she should embrace her mistakes … then she hugged me.
