The geese are taking advantage of the open water on rivers, creeks and sloughs – as well as the leftover grain scattered throughout the fields.

Little known facts about Canada geese

Branta canadensis, or what is most commonly known as the Canada goose, may not be the official bird of Canada, but it most certainly receives national identity.

Returning overhead in the renowned V-shaped formation, Canada geese migrate back to the area where they were born for mating and nesting.

Some may jest that the lead goose is the only one with a good view, but actually each bird in V-shaped formation flies a little bit higher than the goose in front of it, and the geese will shift positions during the sometimes daily, non-stop, 1,000-kilometre flights in order to take turns at breaking the wind and reducing fatigue.

Theories behind the V-shaped formation appear to point to the same conclusion: it reduces wind resistance and conserves energy.

Remarkably, Canada geese fly at an average speed of about 65 kilometres (40 miles) per hour when migrating, but may increase their speed to approximately 110 kilometres (70 miles) per hour if they catch a strong tailwind.

If you think you have seen a goose off the wing of a plane, you may not be far from wrong. While typically they fly 2,000 to 8,000 feet, they have been spotted at altitudes of up to 9,000 feet.

Aside from the familiar Vs forming in the skies, the return of the Canada goose is also marked by their boisterous honking, which is their way of communicating with one another.

On average, Canada geese live anywhere from 10 to 25 years in the wild, although remark-

ably, some live to be as old as 30.

They are also one of the few animals that mate for life, beginning their search for the lifelong companion at around age two or three years. In the sad event that a mate dies, they will try to find another partner.

Baby geese, known as goslings, are led to water within 24 hours of being born in order to learn how to swim, a natural defence to escaping predators. By the time they are a mere one day old, the goslings will be able to dive 30 to 40 feet under water.

Goslings are very impressionable and will follow just about anything or anyone that moves, thinking it is their mother.

However, parent geese are quite protective and are known to violently attack anything or anyone that they sense may pose a threat to their babies.

Known to nest on or near water, the Canada goose uses its habitat not only as a rich food source, but as a protective cover from predators that consist of humans, coyotes, raccoons, skunks, bobcats, and foxes, as well as gulls, eagles, crows, ravens and magpies that prey on eggs, as well as live birds.

They are truly a remarkable bird, unmistakably identifiable by their long black necks and heads, and white chinstrap on the neck. They are the largest goose in the world, including the subspecies “giant Canada goose”.

As they return to these parts, we are reminded of the hope of spring and that our world is constantly changing. They symbolize the will to endure and persevere, and that the journey home is always an option.

Canadian government invests in farm safety The Government of Canada highlighted Canadian Agriculture Safety Week (CASA) with an up to $1.4 million investment to boost farm safety. Agriculture Safety Week was March 14 to 20.

The Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Marie-Claude Bibeau announced an investment of up to $1.4 million over two years to improve farm safety.

“Agricultural producers work in an environment that presents many safety risks. Through various training and resources, including programs designed for children, the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association provides life-saving tools. This new investment from the federal government supports these excellent initiatives that protect our farm families,” said Bibeau.

The announcement kicked off this year’s Canadian Agriculture Safety Week by providing the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) with funding to provide valuable farm safety tools and advice to Canada’s agriculture industry.

This funding through the AgriCompetitiveness program will also facilitate a series of initiatives that promote farm safety for producers, their families and workers. Activities include raising awareness, community engagement and the development and maintenance of safety resources and tools to address existing and emerging safety needs at the provincial and national level.

In addition to outreach and awareness activities, CASA will continue to provide farm safety learning opportunities to rural emergency responders and firefighters, and provide online health and safety training courses to farm workers.

The theme for Agricultural Safety Week was Lead an AgSafe Canada.

CASA showcased farm safety initiatives and programs across Canada.

They will continue to provide essential training and tools to farmers and stakeholders relating to existing and emerging safety concerns at the farm level.

Farm safety is crucial to the overall health and well-being of Canada’s farmers. Ensuring farmers have access to tools to protect both their mental and physical health is key to the strength and prosperity of the agriculture sector.

“With this $1.4-million investment from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, CASA is in a position to continue to support initiatives and work with our partners to equip producers, their families, and their workers with the information and tools needed to make farms a safe place to live, work and play.

daylight by taking the long way around a steep hill is preferable to losing time to injury…or worse.

Make sure you’re giving any machinery a wide berth while it’s being used, keeping the area around the machine clear of animals, children and adults alike.

Children especially should have a clearly designated area safely away from the heavy equipment in which they can play or do chores. Give your workspace a thorough visual inspection before starting, ensuring there are no broken parts or unsafe work habits going on that may lead to injury.

Amid COVID-19 anxiety that continues to impact workers across Canada, the agricultural industry continues to face shifting priorities, juggling mitigation efforts and workforce impacts with daily chores, regular maintenance and upkeep.

National Farm Safety Week was March 14 to 20, and the Canada Safety Council and Workplace Safety and Prevention Services (WSPS) remind Canadians that farming continues to be one of the most hazardous industries in the country

and that safety needs to be prioritized in the workflow.

“It’s been a challenging year for many of us and the agricultural industry is no exception,” said Gareth Jones, president and CEO of the Canada Safety Council. “Maintaining a high standard of safety should be ever present and continually reinforced in farm environments. In an industry of constantly shifting priorities, it’s important to remember to brush up on the basics, too.”

The Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting estimates an average of 85 fatalities every year on the

farm. The most common cause, overwhelmingly, is machinery, to the tune of 70 per cent of all deaths on the farm.

These can include machine rollovers, where a vehicle is improperly balanced on a hill and rolls on its side, striking either the operator or anyone who is nearby. They can also include machine runovers, where either a machine is left unmanned and rolls over its operator, or the machine’s operator runs over someone in the vicinity.

which should promote better conditions for shoulder pulling (drier shoulders).

With that in mind, it is anticipated that the dry conditions projects can be prioritized for completion, but in the event the season is relatively wet with lots of rainy periods, work will be shifted to the wet conditions projects when required. In doing this, it

is planned that a full 20 miles of roads can be completed, but resources can be maximized on roads that will result in the best finished product,” shared Zach Mazure, public works manager.

Under ideal conditions, the County could complete all 28.5 miles of road, but that will be determined at a later date.

RCMP answer questions

During an RCMP Town Hall meeting (virtual) held on March 3, Wetaskiwin/ Camrose RCMP Detachment Commander Inspector Keith Durance, Camrose Detachment Community Liaison Corporal Kevin Krebs and Bashaw RCMP Detachment Commander Sergeant Bruce Holliday answered questions from attendees.

Camrose County Reeve Cindy Trautman asked whether or not they (RCMP) thought the legalization of cannabis changed crime, and whether there have been any issues with impairment.”

Krebs responded, “Just from my experience, there haven’t been as many calls for service in regards to cannabis that I think was originally expected.

“Cannabis is a little bit more complex (than alcohol impairment) for the investigation side of it. It takes a lot longer, due to the fact that the testing ability usually comes from drug recognition experts or blood and urine samples.”

Durance further said, “Where we are seeing an increase in cannabis charges is with our traffic units coming across Possession of Cannabis Within Easy Access to the Driver

(in accordance to the Cannabis Act).

“Now that cannabis is legalized, people are carrying it in their vehicles in the centre console. Lock it away in the trunk or glove box or in a bag on the back seat, something to that affect.”

Holliday indicated that methamphetamine and opioids are still the main drugs of concern.

Trautman inquired about the information coming from the Alberta Government about the formation of a provincial police force.

Durance said, “Municipalities can pay for policing in a variety of ways.

In my opinion, the RCMP still have a good fan base where our rural people really do still enjoy seeing their ‘Mounties’ doing their police work.”

He continued by saying that the RCMP, for decades, have been financially sound and less expensive in the policing services offered. “We are still a very affordable police force, and we have been the police force of choice for a long, long time in this province.

With that being said, the people can choose and we will move forward.”

Durance made reference to a study supported by the RCMP coming out in April, that will go to the government providing statistics and results regarding crime reduction and moving forward.

“I think the government will get a very clear picture on what the financial hit will be, and the results of several studies and also comments like the ones Camrose County is putting in a letter, indicating they want to stay with the RCMP. “We have been very consistent with providing safe policing for the rural communities. I think overall, the percentage is very

high for people in the rural communities wanting to stay with the RCMP.” During the March 9 Camrose County Council meeting, council voted to send a letter to the Provincial Government indicating their position that they would not be in support of a provincial police force.

On a final note, Trautman said that one of the priorities the County would like the RCMP to place focus on is how to effectively police those suffering from mental health unwellness.

Durance responded, “What we are seeing across North America is policing dealing with the mental health component of crime.

We see people who are not well, suffering from mental illness, and are acting out in a criminal manner and/ or breaking the law, then police have to respond.

“Our (RCMP) members are going to these calls for service, yet they do not particularly get a lot of training on how to deal with someone having a mental episode. We can identify mental health concerns, do some de-escalation techniques and try talking with the subjects and dealing with them.”

Durance went on to explain the Rural Police and Crisis Teams (RPCT), that include the presence of a psychiatrist nurse or psychologists along with a police officer, have been attending calls for service (specifically with mental health concerns) in Edmonton and Calgary and have been very successful.

“RPCT teams come in and apply special training and work with these people in an attempt to avoid physical confrontations with the subject and police. Then they are able to get these people the help they need.

“In 80 per cent of the cases where these RPCT teams attend, where we would normally have to apprehend the person under the Mental Health Act, they don’t have to apprehend them.”

Durance said the RCMP is working with Camrose Police Service to look at bringing teams to these particular jurisdictions.

Holliday said that Bashaw has created two Community Wellness Teams to provide social services support to people suffering from mental health unwellness.

Hunting statistics indicate a busy year in the province

Camrose Fish and Wildlife District Officer Lorne Rinkel reports that province-wide, FWEB has noticed a notable increase in the amount of hunters.

“With the COVID crisis came a huge increase in the public seeking outdoor activity,” which Rinkel said was observed by Park Rangers, Wardens and FWEB officers–anybody working in the outdoors.

“Many people were unable to use their holidays in the summer because of travel restrictions, which may account for the increase in the recreational sport of hunting in the fall. I have

also seen a large increase in young and teenaged hunters as they find their way back to the outdoors and new local adventures.”

Hunting still remains a popular sport for many seeking adventure in the great outdoors, enjoying the amazing natural resources Alberta has to offer, and harvesting meat for consumption.

In 2019, reports indicated that 131,172 hunters hunted in Alberta. Of those, 91 per cent were residents, six per cent were non-resident aliens (not Canadian citizens) and three per cent were non-resident (not resident of Alberta). Adult

hunters accounted for 82 per cent of Alberta hunters, while youth made up seven per cent and seniors 11 per cent.

The efforts of Fish and Wildlife officers, along with the revenue collected for hunting licences, play primary roles in the conservation of our natural resources.

Over $20 million in revenue was collected from the sale of hunting licences, hunting draw applications and WiN cards for the 2019-20 season.

With 43 per cent of hunting licence revenue going directly to the Alberta Conservation Association levy in support of program-

ming, the future of our natural resources is kept in tact.

Licence and administration fees accounted for just over 26 per cent and provide compensation to licence issuers, pay for licensing services, including the annual hunter harvest and effort survey delivered through AlbertaRelm.com.

The Alberta Government receives 28.5 per cent of hunting licence revenue collected; 20 per cent goes to general revenue, while six per cent goes to a dedicated fund to deliver wildlife management programs which benefit all hunters, present and future.

aged to report any suspicious or illegal hunting and fishing activity, dangerous wildlife encounters and serious public lands by using the toll free Report A Poacher line at 1-800-6423800 or visiting alberta.ca/ report-a-poacher. By reporting an incident, you could be eligible for a reward.

Tips received are vital at helping FWEB investigations and play an important part in the continuation of the ethical sport of hunting and protection of natural resources.
