ith reduced travel, dining and entertainment options, a supply chain issue with select consumer products being a factor, and laws being such that people are tending to spend more time at home and in backyards, many more people are buying their first, or next, property. The other factor that looms large is lending rates that remain at near record-low levels. This situation has allowed buyers to qualify for favourable mortgage funding or, in many cases, to purchase more home than they had previously believed possible. Even with a generally ailing Alberta economy, residential real estate has been moving up in price. Sales numbers show that when premium homes, in terms of location and condition, are priced right, there will likely be a qualified buyer ready to act. In the first calendar quarter in Camrose, 103 properties have changed hands. Additional properties remain as pending transactions, subject to conditions being successfully removed.

New gymnastics training centre to come By Lori Larsen

Downtown Camrose will be the site of a new stateof-the-art gymnastics facility located on the lots cornering 47 Street and 50 Avenue, directly east of the Camrose Booster, south across 50 Avenue from the Elks Hall.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The site for the new Academy of Gymnastics is the corner of 47 Street and 50 Avenue.

With the goal of building a larger, more accommodating facility for Academy of Gymnastics (Camrose), a few local business operators have pooled their resources to develop the facility. Five Star Home Solutions owner Shawn MacKinnon, one of the partners in the venture, said that the purchase and subsequent build on those City commercial lots was the perfect fit. “We had to present the City with our plan before they would even sell us the lots,” noted MacKinnon. Since then, MacKinnon and the rest of the investors have been working closely with City of Camrose manager of Planning and Development Aaron Leckie and

general manager of Community Development Patricia MacQuarrie to close the deal and ensure the new development in not only Camrose, but Downtown Camrose. “As part of the purchase agreement, we have to begin construction this year. So our proposed ground-breaking is for the end of May. The City was very accommodating in helping with the entire process. “Currently, we are doing all the architecturals, and once they are complete, we will put in the development permits.” Academy of Gymnastics opened in September of 2018 in Camrose at their current location on 50 Street. They have a second location in Wetaskiwin (Precision Gymnastics). “When we ran that first fall session in 2018, we had 160 members,” said Academy of Gymnastics owner/ coach Nancy Luttrell. “Since then, we have run sessions four times a year in the fall, winter and spring, and in summertime, we have been running day camps.” When the Academy first opened in Camrose in 2018, the owners were aware that they would eventually need a larger facility to accommodate the regulation equipment, as well as the growing needs of the community. “For the fall of 2020, we had 252 athletes from Camrose and surrounding area.

We began with recreational programming, and now we offer some developmental programs, and we do have some children in the competitive program (higher level). They actually go once a week to Wetaskiwin to train, because we don’t have the equipment to manage it in Camrose. That is why this new facility is going to be awesome. Then our 13 to 14 children (competitive) who go to train in Wetaskiwin won’t have to anymore. They can remain in Camrose.” MacKinnon and the other local business operators involved in the project realized the need for a more appropriate facility was imminent and jumped into action. “We decided to get together and build this facility and offer them (Academy of Gymnastics) a long-term lease.” MacKinnon described the future building to be approximately 10,000 square feet, 20 feet high and built out of concrete (ICF). The front of the facility will have dual doors off the east end of the building, off both 47 Street and 50 Avenue, with parking in the rear of the building. He said the group had at least five other locations from which to chose for the new facility that would have met the needs of the Academy, but he was adamant that it be located in the Downtown core. Grassdancing season

Happy April! It’s a time for starting new projects, getting ready for “planting”, whether it’s a crop or a garden or a new project. It’s a time of beginnings. It’s a time for “grassdancing.” What’s grassdancing? Here’s an example. Recently, I agreed to create some videos. I watched myself get ready. I found out something of the audience. Began mulling over what the videos might include. Prowled around online a bit. As the time drew nearer, my mulling moved closer to the front of my mind. On the day I’d set aside time to prepare the videos, I watched myself re-read things I’d read before, tidy my desk, poke around online, make a snack, run an errand… What I did not see myself do was actually sit down and prepare the videos. Was I wasting time? Procrastinating? Maybe. However, I prefer to think I was grassdancing… Grassdancing: a wise tradition I first heard the term “grassdancing” from a Native American man from Montana. He was talking about resilience, the characteristics that help children and adults deal with challenges and come out stronger and happier (something we can all use these days). The speaker told us about a custom of his ancestors. When nomadic Plains Indians moved to a new location, they did not immediately set up camp. First, they began to walk around to get a feel for the new terrain. As they walked gently, they would notice the ups and downs, the sheltered places and open places, the water, grass and animals, the spirit of the place. Only when they had walked around enough to have a feel for the terrain did they decide what to put where. Then they would begin to set up camp. The speaker called that gentle exploration “grassdancing”. He suggested that the practice of grassdancing was helpful when we begin anything new. This gentle exploring helps us get a sense of the new “terrain”. That, in turn, helps us to decide wise next steps. Not a waste of time I used to be frustrated when I’d create a work plan that began with a specific task. At the point when I thought I ought to begin Step One of the work plan, I’d divert to another activity that did not seem the logical place to begin. I now know that sometimes my “dance around the edges” is like priming the pump so the water will flow. It creates a space (physical, mental or emotional) where new things can happen. In the early phases of something new, things go more easily when you include exploratory activities. Grassdancing – getting a feel for the terrain – can provide a bridge. It helps prevent impatience over “nothing’s happening yet” or worrying that maybe you’re avoiding or procrastinating. Grassdancing or procrastination? Sometimes my “dance around the edges” really is a method to avoid or procrastinate. The same might be true for you. What might also be true for you is that, when you pay attention to your own subtle signals, you can tell the difference. The physical or emotional sensations you experience when you gently explore something new in your life (grassdance) are different from the physical or emotional sensations when you avoid or procrastinate. When you consciously choose to begin a project or a personal change with some form of grassdancing, it’s easier to break through inertia or resistance. It’s easier to begin moving in the direction you desire. The next time you begin something new–and April is a season of beginning –it might be time for gentle exploratory grassdancing. If nothing else, grassdancing sounds much better than procrastinating or wasting time. That’s a good enough reason! And maybe we’ll only have another six weeks of winter! ***

I’d love to hear from you! If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.

Science has proven that plants need carbon dioxide to transfer nitrogen, oxygen and sun energy through photosynthesis to soil microbes that break down minerals and nutrients to feed plants. The atmosphere contains about 78 per cent nitrogen by weight. An unhealthy plant has a problem trying to use this free nitrogen. Are the chemical and fertilizer corporations pushing the carbon scare so they can sell more products to protect and feed unhealthy plants? Why do we now have so many crop diseases and evergreens dying? Is China purchasing our coal to burn and provide ample carbon for healthy plants? Robert Snider, New Norway Good ship

Aboard the good ship HMS Canada, ship log 1955: Wonderful ship, state-ofthe-art, world-leading scientists on board; leaders in agricultural research, plant genetics, biochemists, immunologists in cancer research centers, communications, pure/applied physics, rocketry, aviation, fisheries, pharmaceutics. HMS Canada is a land of plenty, agricultural crops, fisheries, mineral wealth, oil-gas-coal, forests. Scientists are supported by a dedicated, hardworking and educated crew on board. Periodically, captains have been ably supported by competent first mates Lougheed, Romanow, Wells and others. Ship is sailing smoothly and “on course” to a faroff destination. Ship log: second decade of 21st century…ship is rudderless and adrift, lost power, winds and seas are threatening. Most scientists have “jumped ship” or been “thrown overboard” as unwanted ballast. The bridge continues to argue whether the “pointy part” goes first or the “flat part” goes first. There is no agreement what the destination is or the best way to get there, and everyone is trying to get their hands on the tiller. The bridge has not mastered reading charts or compass or using GPS, or checking weather conditions for impending gales, etc. Collectively, they

have sailed into the Bermuda Triangle. Fiscally mismanaged sister ships like HMS Greece and Italy have veered off course, while others like HMS USSR have sunk. Newly launched ships HMS Israel, Jordan and India, using modern technology, have overtaken us. The “wannabe” captains have not served an apprenticeship on modern, progressive ships like HMS Norway, Germany, Denmark, Suisse, Sweden, Kiwi, etc., nor have they visited progressive ports in Europe and Asia. Simultaneously, they have not noticed that the aforementioned ships have adjusted their sails and altered course and have quietly sailed away. Meanwhile, on the sun desk, thousands of complacent sunbathers, basking in the glow of self aggrandizement, not realizing the relatively small size of HMS Canada, and that it is adrift (and the hull is rusting). It is time to stop blaming the current captain solely: several previous captains have had a very large hand sailing us into this Bermuda Triangle. At the next scheduled vote to change the bridge (2021? 2022?), make sure the new captain has the capability and the vision to get HMS Canada back on a charted course. Tell your local deckhand (MP, MLA) to share his/her vision to convince you. Lynn Clark, Camrose Service clubs

I am writing this letter in regards to the front page of The Camrose Booster on March 23 on Empathy for the Elks. Does Mr. Czapp realize that they are not the only service club who has lost major revenue due to COVID-19? The Legion, Moose Lodge, Rotary, Swans and Roses Lions, Knights of Columbus, just to name a few. These service clubs have all had their fundraisers cancelled. These service clubs have bills to pay too! A service club has no greater joy than to give back to the community! This is no longer possible due to COVID-19. In the picture, there should of been representatives for the many service

clubs in Camrose standing on the steps with Mr. Czapp. We are all in this together. Service clubs included. Judy Sturek, Camrose Editor’s note: This Camrose Booster photo/cover copy was not intended to raise the profile, or the serious repercussions of this pandemic, of any particular club, organization or business over the similar plight of another. Over several publishing weeks, The Booster has profiled a variety of entities negatively affected by the COVID-19 era. We simply do not have the time or resources to tell the story of each and all. We sincerely believe most readers will understand that the goal of our reporting is to provide an overview of the entire business community, not specifically single out a single club such as the Elks Club featured on our March 23rd cover. Fooled again

Curses. Foiled (I mean fooled) again. Why do I get sucked in every year by the plausibility of your front page year after year? Because they are so cleverly done. And this year’s was particularly sly. I know you will never divulge the brains behind the April foolery–it was surely a group effort. But you must submit it for a community newspaper publishing award. We are proud of our Camrose Booster. Peter LeBlanc, Camrose April fool’s

Well, you got me again. Every year, when I read your April Fool’s column, I wonder at the level of foolish government waste. Within a day or two, when I realize that it’s near April Fool’s Day, I shake my head and have a good laugh at how gullible I am. Laughter truly is the best medicine. It takes a special turn of mind to think of all the great stories. Keep up the good work and thanks for the fun. Pat Westergard, Camrose

“My last two major developments have been in Downtown, so it just made sense. It is always harder to build Downtown. There are a lot of factors that come into play, but for tenants and everyone else, it is an added bonus. I think we have one of the coolest downtowns, and that is why I try to focus all our builds down there. I had to talk everyone into spending more money to build Downtown, and that was not an easy task, but so many will benefit from this facility being located there.” While MacKinnon admits during or nearing the end of a pandemic is not the ideal time to try to motivate people into investing in new development, this was worth the risk, and that the Academy was something they felt strongly about getting behind. MacKinnon said that besides the benefit to the community of having a firstclass gymnastics facility in

Camrose, the benefits of having it located Downtown are two fold.

Submitted Six-year-old Elana Hoover is all smiles during one of her sessions at the Academy of Gymnastics’ current facility in Camrose.

“Parents dropping off children at the Academy can take advantage of all the services and businesses Downtown.” The building will take approximately one year to completion date, and will add a much-needed shot of energy to City development. “This is sign of what is to come in Camrose. People need to know that things are progressing and moving forward and that development, albeit slower than in the past, is moving forward.” “We have to do business as usual, we have to keep on growing. We have to be able to support these initiatives and organizations in our community. If you don’t have the facilities, we can’t offer these services.” Luttrell said, “The fact that this is just over a year away is amazing. I have been involved with other projects that took a year just to do the planning of it and then another year to build, so this is very exciting.”

Alberta Culture Days grants are now open By Murray Green

Alberta’s government is now accepting grant applications for Alberta Culture Days 2021. Community organizations can apply for grants of up to $10,000 to plan and hold events showcasing local talent and boosting the impact and reach of existing cultural programs in their communities. Applications will be accepted until May 7. Culture Days events will take place throughout the month of September. “I am delighted to announce that grant applications for 2021 Alberta Culture Days are now online. While COVID-19 made last year’s celebrations challenging, communities across the province rose to the challenge and delivered amazing events showcasing our homegrown talent. I am excited to see Alberta’s passion, creativity and talent on display during this year’s Alberta Culture Days,” said Leela Sharon Aheer, Alberta Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women. While all communities are encouraged to host free public events celebrating

culture, those approved for grants are designated celebration sites. These sites are divided into three categories. Feature sites, which present up to three days of programming, may receive up to $10,000. Host sites, which present two days of programming, may receive grants of up to $5,000. Pop-up sites, hosting one day of programming, may receive up to $1,000 in funding. In light of ongoing concerns with COVID-19, prospective organizers of Alberta Culture Days events are encouraged to consider provincial health protocols that allow for physical distancing when planning their event. More than 241,000 people attended small inperson and online events last year. There were 943 events in 47 communities during Alberta Culture Days 2020, celebrating our unique culture, heritage, artistic diversity and provincial pride. The deadline to apply for an Alberta Culture Days celebration site grant is May 7.

Enhancements to the Film and Television Tax Credit will attract medium and big-budget productions that will create jobs and attract investment in the province. The Film and Television Tax Credit, in combination with Alberta’s competitive tax environment, affordable labour costs and breathtaking scenery, have made the province a prime choice for medium and big-budget television and film projects that will have a positive impact on Alberta’s economy. To build on the success of the program, Alberta’s government is removing the $10 million per project cap to make the province an even more desirable location for larger film productions. This change also creates more flexibility for the province to respond to future growth in this sector, and encourages the development of production studios here in Alberta. The tax credit has a significant return on investment, with every $1 in tax credits distributed creating roughly $4 that is reinvested into Alberta’s economy. It is expected that successful Film and Television Tax Credit applicants will create thousands of goodpaying jobs for Albertans, as removing the per project cap will embolden more longer-term television series to come to the province. “These changes to the Film and Television Tax Credit are going to attract hundreds of millions of dollars in productions, which lead to the development of film studios and create hundreds of jobs, ranging from carpenters to lighting technicians. Productions will fill hotels, drive diversification and provide customers in small businesses across Alberta,” said Doug Schweitzer, Alberta Minister of Jobs, Economy and Innovation.

“Supporting Alberta’s emerging film and television talent is essential to a strong and thriving screenbased sector. This industry is resilient and has stepped up to the challenge of working safely. It was an honour to work with JEI and stakeholders on the tax credit enhancements, and I am thrilled to see made-inAlberta productions filming again and creating jobs for artists,” added Leela Sharon Aheer, Alberta Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women. Since the Film and Television Tax Credit launched in January 2020, it has approved 31 medium and large-scale productions with an anticipated spend of $177.6 million and 3,300 jobs for Albertans. Applications approved by the program so far represent a variety of production types and genres, including one digital media production; 10 feature films, including one comedy, three documentaries, five dramas and one science fiction production; and 20 television series, 13 of which are returning. Through Budget 2021, Alberta’s government increased its support for this industry by adding an additional $19.5 million, for a total budget of $50 million in 2021-22. Application intake for the Film and Television Tax Credit opened on Jan. 29, 2020 and remains open. “This is monumental in its significance to Alberta’s motion picture industry. In terms of jobs, this announcement will mean new careers for thousands of highly skilled Albertans. Many hundreds of businesses will also benefit from the massive infusion of cash this industry brings into our economy. Our industry has worked together for decades to encourage this outcome. I congratulate the Government of Alberta and all those industry members who worked tirelessly to bring about this announcement today. We are now a much more competitive jurisdiction with interest and major investment from the world’s largest studios and streaming companies. Albertans can be proud of this industry and should be prepared to hear additional announcements about new projects in the near future,” shared Damian Petti, president, International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Local 212. “The Alberta Media

Production Industries Association welcomes the decision to enhance the Alberta Film and Television Tax Credit. These changes will bring significant growth in investment and jobs in our industry and beyond. We look forward to working with the government to ensure there continues to be a place for Alberta’s stories and storytellers as our sector grows,” said David Benson, chair, Alberta Media Production Industries Association. “Alberta has become a location of choice globally for film and television production. Our vistas, talent, crews and safe film-friendly environment are world class. With the support of Minister Schweitzer and our provincial government, we now have the ability to compete internationally for largebudget projects that will have a significant impact on our provincial economy and job creation in this exciting, growing sector,” continued Luke Azevedo, commissioner of Film, Television and Creative Industries, Calgary Economic Development. “When we filmed Togo in the town of Cochrane and surrounding area, our production was brought to life by the expertise of local crews and stunning landscapes. The experience was truly second to none. This announcement is great news for Alberta’s film and TV sector, and for production teams with their eyes on Canada,” said Mary Ann Hughes, vice president, Production and Investment Planning for Disney. “Alberta is poised to become the next major production centre in Canada, and with the changes to their production incentive, they have made themselves competitive with many jurisdictions both inside and outside the country. We appreciate the steps the government, and especially Minister Schweitzer, have made to make Alberta more attractive for film and television production,” said Barry Ziehl, senior vice president, public affairs, Warner Bros. “An enhanced film and television production incentive will support growth and opportunity for local casts and crews, and engage workers in a wide range of sectors from construction, transportation, accommodation and hospitality,” said Wendy Noss, president, Motion Picture Association – Canada.

Kodiaks sweep both Olds, Dragons By Murray Green

Something magical happened to the Camrose Kodiaks on March 27 and 28. For the first time this season, the club swept two games on a weekend in Alberta Junior Hockey League action. After a scoreless opening period, Olds scored twice in the second before the Kodiaks woke up from hibernation. Connor Gourley started the barrage of four straight goals for the bears in the middle frame. In the third, Cal Caragata and Lynden Grandberg connected on the power play to pull out the 4-2 victory for Camrose. Lucas Eagle added an empty net tally to close the game. Goalie Logan Will-

cott turned away 23 of 25 shots to keep the Kodiaks in the game. Camrose fired 42 shots at the Olds cage. Camrose used a similar pattern against the Drumheller Dragons on March 28. The Dragons fired first in the opening period. However, it was all Camrose in the last two periods, as they scored three in the middle frame, and added four more in the third for a 7-1 win. The offence came from everywhere with Ryan Sullivan, Michael Lovsin and Blake Kondor garnering markers in the second. Sam Kroon, Owen Dean, Grandberg and Griffen Fraser collected the tallies in the third

period. The last two were on the power play. Goalie Griffin Bowerman stopped 30 of 31 shots aimed at the net. Camrose recorded 22 shots at the Drumheller net, but made the most of the opportunities they were given. The Kodiaks, if approved, will now play other teams such the Calgary Canucks, Brooks Bandits and Okotoks Oilers. No word yet on the next home game for Camrose, or if fans will be allowed. Bear facts

Captain Brennan Davis has committed to the Red Deer College Kings hockey team next year in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference. Kodiaks General Manager Boris Rybalka

said, “It has been a pleasure to have Brennan play for the Kodiaks for the past four years. His hard work and dedication to the sport of hockey make him very deserving of his opportunity in Red Deer. The Kings are getting a high calibre defenceman who can do it all on the ice, while being a tremendous leader.” He joins teammates Carson Brisson (Denver), Connor Gourley (Arizona State), Lynden Grandberg (Brown) and Lane Brockhoff (Niagara) as players who are committed to a post-secondary school to pursue an education. “Brennan was a joy to coach from day one. Angels for elders By Lori Larsen

This spring, add a little heavenly goodwill to your garden with an Elder Angel, and help bring about awareness to the sad reality of elder abuse. The one-foot angels are made of metal and painted purple, the colour used in the Elder Abuse Awareness Campaign ribbons. The Elder Angels will be available for purchase at local garden centres in early May, and are also available for purchase at the Service Options for Seniors (SOS) office located at 5014B-48 Street. They can be placed in planters or flowerbeds, and act as a constant reminder that elders from around the world suffer from abuse, but anyone can play an angel on earth to help stop the abuse. The original funding for the Elder Angel project came from Battle River Community Foundation, and the project has since seen an infusion of goodwill and donations through local businesses. “Steve Kushnerik from Camrose Machine and Welding is donating the labour to cut out the angels,” said SOS program director Christina Rehmann. “Marshall Wideman is donating the purple paint, and my daughter Elle Rehmann is donating her spring break to paint them.

human Elder Angels, and that, ultimately, is what we are shooting for. We would love for Camrose to be simply deluged with these sweet reminders to watch out for one another.” Proceeds from the purchase of the Elder Angels are being used to allow SOS to continue providing information, referral and support to seniors in Camrose and area. “Our main goal with the Elder Angel Program is to raise awareness and elevate the conversation around elder abuse,” said Rehmann. “Knowing the signs and breaking the silence is like an inoculation against abuse. Honestly, haven’t our seniors been through enough? “We are so excited and grateful that the private sector is participating on this project as we couldn’t possibly undertake it on our own.” Spread the word by putting an angel in your yard or in a potted plant, and let others know that elder abuse will not be tolerated. According to the Alberta Elder Abuse Awareness Council (AEAAC), elder abuse is defined as any action or inaction by a person(s) in a trusting relationship that causes harm and distress to an older adult. The two most identified and reported types of elder

However, abuse can also include physical, sexual, neglect, abandonment, medication abuse and self neglect. “It can be difficult to identify the signs of elder abuse, as it is often committed by someone known to the victim, such as a family member, friend or

“If possible, it is also a good idea to confide in someone you trust about what is happening, and consider reporting your concerns to the police. It is important that victims don’t blame themselves, as help is available, and no one deserves to be abused,” said Brisson. Rehmann said that increasingly (weekly), the staff at SOS have received disclosures of abuse from seniors. “Their complexity is daunting. We support folks to the best of our ability, and refer them on to our community partners. “We recently partnered with Family Violence Action Society, as well as Dr. Kathleen Hunter and Dr. Sherry Dahlke from University of Alberta, to apply for a grant from the Canadian Public Health Agency for a full-time Elder Abuse Nurse Navigator who will help seniors the entire way through the process to the resolution of their choice.” Rehmann added that in Camrose, there is a group of community stakeholders/service providers who meet to troubleshoot and brainstorm supports and solutions for seniors who are struggling with abuse. Victor George Luckwell December 10, 1928 ~ March 29, 2021 Victor George Luckwell of Camrose, formerly of New Norway, passed away on Monday, March 29, 2021, at the age of 92. He was predeceased by his loving wife of sixty-one years, Madeline, and his sister Doris Butler. Victor was born in Hanna, AB, on December 10, 1928, to parents George and Lina Luckwell. Victor spent the first five years of his life in the Pollockville District, where his father homesteaded. In 1933, the family moved to the Ferintosh District, where his father rented land and farmed. In 1940, his father bought a farm two miles southwest of New Norway, which the family still owns today. During his junior and senior high school years, he attended school in New Norway. In the summer, he would walk or ride his bike and, in the winter, he would ride a horse to school. His lunch consisted of peanut butter sandwiches. Victor was an ambitious, hardworking individual with an entrepreneurial spirit. He bought his first truck at the age of eighteen and started his trucking business. He also worked on the rigs for 2-1/2 years as a young man. After that, he got a job with Gulf Oil, where he worked for twenty years. He bought the family farm from his father in 1963, and farmed for thirty-three years, while still operating his trucking business and contracting for Gulf Oil. Victor married the love of his life, Madeline Sikstrom, on February 17, 1954 in Edberg, AB. They lived in the village of New Norway, where their union was blessed with five children, four sons and a daughter. The family moved out to the farm in 1963. Victor and Madeline sold the farm to their son Dale and his wife Ardith in 1996. They continued to live on the farm until 2010, at which time they moved to Camrose. Sadly, Madeline passed away on October 19, 2015. Victor always found time to be involved in his children’s lives whether through coaching sport teams in which his kids were involved, and attending sporting events or other activities involving his kids. They always found time for an annual fishing trip. In later years, as his kids grew up and had families of their own, family gatherings, Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter were special moments for him. He loved hanging out with his family. Victor was an active individual right up until the time of his passing. He loved golfing, curling, baseball, fishing and hunting. He continued with most of these activities even at the age of 91. He also really enjoyed going to McDonald’s each morning to hang out with his “coffee buddies”. Left to cherish his memory are his children David (Marie), Alan (Terrie), Linda (Doug) Batke, Dale (Ardith), and Larry (Brenda); seventeen grandchildren; and twenty-seven great-grandchildren. A private family service was held. A recording of the service will be made available on our website at a later date. Interment has taken place in the New Norway Cemetery. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Camrose United Church, S.T.A.R.S. Air Ambulance, or to the Canadian Cancer Society. Anne Burnadette Willisko November 25, 1923 ~ March 30, 2021 Anne was the first daughter born to Woijech and Victoria Winczura on the family farm in the Round Hill district. She attended Kalawy School. On her 21st birthday on November 25, 1944, she married Nick Willisko from the Hay Lakes district. Anne was a devoted wife and mother and worked hard on the farm. Coffee was always on. She was a tremendous cook – we will miss her cabbage rolls and perogies. She always planted a large garden to supply family and friends with fresh veggies. Her love of flowers grew all over on the farm. Anne had a passion for many things in life, including family and friends, travelling, floor curling, playing cards, and bingo. In 2012, due to health concerns, she moved into Rosealta Lodge in Camrose, where our little social butterfly made many new friends amongst residents and staff. After seven years at the lodge, she moved to Bethany Meadows Oak Cottage, where again, our little butterfly made many friends amongst the caring staff. Anne was a beautiful selfless free-spirited soul and brought joy to everyone who connected with her. We will all miss her beautiful smile. Anne is survived by her son Ken (Jane); daughter Carol (Don) Simms; grandchildren Chad Willisko, Robyn (Matt) Kirkpatrick, Ryan Simms (Jen Monchak), and Brandi (Brandon) Fjeld; great-grandchildren Brynn and Sydney Kirkpatrick, and Theodore Simms; as well as many nephews, nieces, and friends. Anne was predeceased by her husband Nick; parents Woijech and Victoria Winczura; and siblings Frank, Albert, Adam, Barney, Ed, Helen Hemingson and Martha. Rest in peace, Mom – Baba A private family service was held. A recording of the funeral mass will be available following the service on the St. Francis Xavier Church website under “Recorded Masses”. Interment has taken place at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, Hay Lakes. If family and friends so desire, memorial donations are gratefully accepted to St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Hay Lakes (c/o Richard Pelz, RR1, Bittern Lake, Alberta T0C 0L0). Augustana professor creates new award for Black students By Lori Larsen

University of Alberta Augustana Campus chemistry professor James Kariuki saw an opportunity to assist students in their pursuit of learning, and responded in kind by creating a new award in support of black students. In working with the Black Youth Mentorship and Leadership Program out of the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta, Kariuki was inspired to take this important work a step

further, and a step closer to home. “It’s not that I’ve won the lottery and have a lot of extra money to give, or that I’m trying to become famous. It’s about paying back.” The award means a lot to Kariuki, and thus far, he is the largest contributor, with a donation of $3,500, which, in turn, has been supplemented by an anonymous donor, as well as University of Alberta Augustana Campus dean Demetres Tryphonopoulos.

Beginning in the fall of 2021, any student with satisfactory academic standing, who is enrolled in their first year of studies at Augustana, is of African descent and who self-identifies as Black, African-Canadian, AfricanAmerican, Afro-Caribbean or Afro-Latino heritage, will be able to apply for the newly developed Professor James Keffa Kariuki Award. “I didn’t have a lot of money growing up, and my

family didn’t have a lot of money,” remarked Kariuki. “I know that there are students and families in Canada in that same situation, and I’m hoping that this award can make a difference. “In my chemistry classes at Augustana, I see very few, if any, black students,” explained Kariuki. “The overall goal is to increase enrollment–even one student at a time–of Black students in science.” Continued on page 23

In loving memory of

Forever in Our Hearts

Walter Tomaszewski

Patricia Gail Hansen

1918 ~ 2002 Dad, we are having such   a hard time celebrating   with you this year And we know that you know   the reason why. Our hearts are breaking   here on earth, While no doubt you opened   your arms and gave a sigh. You welcomed one of your   children into Heaven Just a few short weeks ago. Our sister left us so suddenly, And we know you were there   to greet her and tell her   you love her so. Losing a loved one leaves   a hole in the heart We so know this after   losing you. But although you can   no longer walk shoulder   to shoulder with us, We always feel the whisper   of your love anew. So hold your daughter,   our beloved Patsy,   in your arms, And take care of her   because we miss her so. Let us take comfort knowing   she is there with you. To help ease the pain of us   having to let her go. Written with love, Your children and loving wife April 2021

Mildred (Millie) Oborowsky (nee Dewald) was born on February 25, 1955 in Macklin, Saskatchewan, to parents Rose and Peter Dewald. After a short battle with cancer, she passed away peacefully at home in Camrose on February 2, 2021, at the age of 65. Mom spent most of her life on the farm near Cactus Lake, Saskatchewan, always busy – raising her family of three girls while farming, tending to her flowers and garden, and feeding anyone who stopped by with buns, baking, canning and sausage – all homemade with love. Over the last few years, Mom found a new peace within herself and always relied strongly on her faith. She loved nature and watching the deer wander in her backyard, while sipping her coffee on her deck. She was always one to say, “Turn some music on”, and then proceeded to sing and dance around the room. Mom especially enjoyed walking to the park, and partaking in ice cream treats and mini train rides around Mirror Lake with her six grandchildren – her pride and joy! The kids loved any special time spent with Grandma. Millie leaves to mourn her daughters: Della (Dino, Skye and Rhys) Pezzente (Calgary), Coralee (Ted, Aviana and Evangelia) Matsikas (Edmonton) and Janessa (Brett, Vann and Veda) Ferry (Edmonton); husband Elmer Oborowsky; as well as an extensive family of sisters, brothers, in-laws, nieces, nephews and close friends. She was truly blessed with so much love and support. She was predeceased by her parents Rose and Peter Dewald; her brother Arnold; and her nephew Jody. Mom’s always kind and caring heart, beautiful smile and generous soul will be greatly missed by all. A special thank you to all who lent a helping hand and provided so much love, care and support to Millie and her family during these past few months and always. We all succeeded in fulfilling her last wishes and are so grateful for that. Sleep peacefully, Mom – we love you! A private funeral service will be held at a later date through Gregory’s Funeral Home, Provost, Alberta. If friends so desire, memorial donations are gratefully accepted to Canadian Cancer Society, 55 St. Claire Avenue West, Suite 500, Toronto, Ontario  M4V 2Y7.

…with a memorial gift that will do good in their name forever.

Q.

How can I establish a “Fund” with the Battle River Community Foundation?

A.

A Fund may be launched with as little as $1,000 and a pledge to grow the Fund to $10,000 within ten years. Additional contribution may be made monthly, yearly or as a onetime donation. When the fund reaches $10,000, a permanent endowment fund, named as you wish, is established. It will then start giving back to the community, in accordance with your instructions, forever.

J & M Service started back in 1965 By Murray Green

A lot has changed in Camrose since 1965, when Myrle Brausen started J & M Service at 4801-51 Avenue. He now operates the old school garage along with his son, Carmen. The service station was built by Dr. Carter (chiropractor) and he rented it out as a tire shop, starting out as Royalite Petroleum Company station. Then the Hopfe Brothers owned the gas station. It was operated by G. Hilliard, K. Wynzura, Frank Gleason and, later, Myrle. Jack Hirsch and Myrle bought the gas station in 1965, and turned it into J & M Gulf. After Jack died about three years later, Myrle became the sole proprietor, until his son Carmen joined him as a mechanic. “He (Jack) was getting sick with cancer, so I just bought him out and took over. I was told, over the years, that I should operate my own business, so I decided to do that.” Before Myrle formed the partnership, he was a mechanic for Dick’s Garage (Pedersen’s Volkswagon and Rambler dealership) at 48 Street and 49 Avenue, which was later the bus depot. He worked at the dealership for 10 years before starting his own business. “When I opened, a lot of the Volkswagon customers came with me to my new business. That didn’t go over too well. They knew I had received specialty Volkswagon technician training,” said Myrle. A year later, Pedersen

sold his business to Adams Motors from Wetaskiwin. Operating a gas station even back then wasn’t a money-making business. “We make money because of our service. We rely on one thing–be honest with the customer. We don’t pressure anyone. We tell people what is wrong with their vehicle, and it is up to them if they want the work done. We would tell them they should be looked at within a certain time period. If they didn’t,

49

they would be back with more work that needed to be repaired.” After many years, the gas station switched from Gulf Canada to a BA (British-American Oil Company) and, in turn, a PetroCanada outlet, which it is today. “There are only two people in Camrose who started their own businesses since the early ’60s and are still at it–Norm Mayer and myself. Other businesses have been

passed on to the next generation, but we are the only two to still be the original owners,” informed Myrle, who is now 85 years old. “This lady came in and asked how long I’ve been here. I told her that I’ve been around so long that I’ve worked on Fred Flintstone’s car,” he laughed. Both Carmen and Myrle plan to retire at the same time. “I plan to work another five years and then retire at 90. Carmen

will be close to retirement age by then as well, and already has 36 years of being a mechanic.” Turning wrenches for more than 65 years has taken its toll on Myrle’s hands and leg, but he loves his job and doesn’t consider it work at all. “I love what I do and do what I love. Working on cement and crawling under cars in the snow does take its toll after awhile,” he confessed. Continued on page 17

Although the downtown area has undergone many changes, the mechanics still fix automobiles with quality repairs and serve gas. “People have changed as well. Before, people would drop off a vehicle and say fix it. Now, they want to know everything and how much it will cost before you can go ahead because of the economy. People get angry

easier now with the way everything is in the world,” added Carmen. “We always put on a happy face, and tell people what the problem is and about how long it should be safe for. The problem is they forget about it and two years down the road, their vehicle breaks down.” Myrle’s daughter is the bookkeeper, so it is truly a family-run business.

Learn the function of a car battery By Murray Green

Vehicles consist of many essential components to keep them running efficiently and effectively. Car and truck owners should have an understanding of how their vehicles function so they can diagnose and address problems as they arise. Car batteries are an important component of any vehicle. Even though engines are the powerhouse of any car or truck, without a battery, the engine wouldn’t be able to work. Car batteries work by providing a jolt of electricity necessary to power all the electrical components of the vehicle. This is achieved through a chemical reaction that changes chemical energy into the electrical energy needed to deliver voltage to the starter. In addition to initially starting the car, the battery also keeps the electric current steady to keep the engine running. The battery also works in conjunction with the alternator to power the

electronics in the car. While the car is running, the alternator reverses the current produced by the battery, recharging it as a result. This happens during long journeys, so people who drive for short bursts of time may find that their batteries will not have a chance to recharge and may not have the longevity desired. There is quite literally a lot riding on a functioning battery. No one wants to be caught stranded with a dead battery, so drivers may wonder if there are any indicators that may signal the battery needs replacement. If a vehicle does not immediately start or if the cranking is sluggish and it takes longer to start, it may mean the battery is starting to fail. Drivers who make frequent, short trips may find their car batteries do not have time to fully recharge. This, coupled with overtaxing thanks to a lot of accessory use, may cause the battery and the alterna-

tor to have shortened life spans. If the battery fluid level is below the energy conductor inside, it is often indicative of overcharging and excessive heat. Corrosion buildup, dust, dirt and grime on battery connections may cause performance problems. Inspecting and cleaning the terminals can prolong the battery. Battery leaks can produce a sulfur odour similar to the smell of a rotten egg. This can become problematic over time, and leaks may indicate an aging or damaged battery. Most batteries have a finite life span. A wellmaintained battery can last up to five years. Neglect can reduce that life expectancy considerably. Replace the battery immediately if the case is cracking, as it could be because excessive heat is swelling the battery. Understanding how car batteries work can help drivers keep their cars running smoothly.

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Equal representation is important to professor Kariuki, who also holds the position of the Augustana Faculty Equity, Diversity and Inclusion lead within the University of Alberta, as well as co-lead of Augustana’s own EDI Working Group alongside fellow faculty member Sandra Rein. “A diverse community is a good community, because it offers different ideas and perspectives,” said Kariuki. “I think that bringing black students and other racialized groups to Augustana is going to benefit everyone, because we learn from each other and from different perspectives.” Dean Tryphonopoulos congratulated Kariuki on his vision and initiative. “It shall make a crucial difference in the life of an Augustana science student who self-identifies as black. Obviously, this is only a beginning, since it is imperative that we use professor Kariuki’s example in order to imagine and offer similar opportunities to all those students who self-identify as black, so that they may succeed at Augustana and beyond.” For more information on the Professor James Keffa Kariuki Award, visit Augustana’s Giving Page.

My wife asked me to stop singing “I’m a Believer” by The Monkees because she found it annoying. At first, I thought she was kidding. But then I saw her face… Spilling coffee is the adult equivalent of losing your balloon. Strange new trend at the office. People putting names on food in the company fridge. Today, I had a tuna sandwich named Kevin. Currently helping my son search for his Easter bunny that I ate last night. It’s my wife’s birthday tomorrow. She’s been leaving jewellery catalogs all over the house, so I bought her a magazine rack. People don’t want to hear your opinion. They want to hear their opinion coming out of your mouth. Remember how when you were little, you could just rip off your diaper and run around naked and everyone thought it was so cute and funny? Anyway, I need bail money. My teachers told me I’d never amount to much since I’m such a procrastinator. I told them, “Just you wait!” Yesterday, my husband thought he saw a cockroach in the kitchen. He sprayed everything down and cleaned thoroughly. Today, I’m putting the cockroach in the bathroom. Research has shown that laughing for two minutes is just as healthy as a 20-minute jog. So now I’m sitting at Mirror Lake, laughing at all the joggers going by. I hate telling people I’m a taxidermist. When they ask what I do every day, I say, “Y’know. Stuff.” Parenting a teenage boy is basically spending your day asking questions like, “Whose hoodie is this?”, “What happened to all the groceries I just bought?”, “Did you shower today?” and “What is that smell!?” Sorry I haven’t gotten anything done this afternoon. I’ve been in the produce department at the grocery store trying to open this stupid plastic bag.

An additional bedroom could be used as an overnight guest room, hobby room or home office. Completing the main floor is another four-piece bathroom and spacious laundry room conveniently located directly off the fully finished double garage. The lower level awaits your own needs and personal touches with opportunity to provide plenty more living area, possibly a home gym, hobby area and more bedrooms. This great duplex, located at 321762A Street, has no condo fees and is priced at $298,500, offering some financial freedom to do the things that matter to you. Apparently it’s only appropriate to say, “Look at you! You’ve gotten so big!” to children. Adults tend to get offended. Got up this morning and ran around the block five times. Then I got tired, so I picked up the block and put it back in the toy box. One minute, you’re young and fun. The next minute you can predict the weather with your bad knee. How do some people go to sleep as soon as they close their eyes? It takes me three hours, 11 pillow flips, seven different positions, two trips to the bathroom and a partridge in a pear tree. • • • • • • • •

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED… Which letter in the word “scent” is silent – the “S” or the “C”? Why does fridge have a “D” in it, but refrigerator doesn’t? Why are Zoey and Zoe pronounced the same, but Joey and Joe aren’t? Why can you drink a drink, but you can’t food a food? Why is the letter “W” called a “Double-U”, when it is clearly a “Double-V”? Why are Kansas and Arkansas pronounced differently? Why is the word “queue” ironic? It’s just a “Q” with a bunch of silent letters waiting in line. Why do the words cough, bough, rough, dough and through sound differently even though they all end in “ough”?
