he gardening program at Camrose Regional Exhibition was both wildly popular this season, and a huge benefit to the five families who are able to reap the reward of hands-on gardening experience.

The best part – a rather bountiful harvest. The peas are done for the year, of course, as is the lettuce. Onions, potatoes, beets and corn, however, are ready (or near ready) and looking great!

In the late spring, families were invited to submit their participation application for this unique learning and growing process. The CRE knew this would be a wonderful way to connect urban residents with agriculture. CRE staff even offered recipes which matched the summer and pending fall harvest to dishes using vegetables’ grown.

The trial program was well received and so successful. CRE is hoping to land more funding for next year, thus helping additional people understand and appreciate how beneficial and fulfilling gardening can be.

Suspicious males check out vehicles August 18

Camrose Police Services responded to a complaint of a female threatening to harm herself. Police located the female and assisted her in getting treatment.

A complaint was received of two males looking into vehicle in the area of 52 Avenue and 42 Street.

Extensive patrols were conducted in the area but the males were not located.

Police responded to a complaint of a female at a residence who was intoxicated and causing a disturbance. The female was uncooperative and was unable to care for herself, so she was arrested and lodged until sober.

The province’s new health guidance is aimed at ensuring students’ safety and to assist school officials preparing for the new school year.

The Guidance for Respiratory Illness Prevention and Management in Schools document will help schools reduce respiratory illness and infection in schools. A back-to-school toolkit provides information for parents and school staff on what to expect when students head to their classrooms.

Consistent with the extended timelines for easing COVID-19 measures, students and school staff should screen daily for symptoms using the Alberta Health Daily Checklist, and must isolate if they test positive or have the core COVID-19 symptoms.

A detailed 2021-22 School Year Plan contains two contingency scenarios for continuing student learning if there is a significant change in the COVID-19 situation in the fall.

The province hopes that along with these measures and climbing vaccination rates, students and parents can look forward to in-person classes, with no restrictions on in-person learning or extracurricular activities. Masking will still be required on school buses.

“Thanks to the power of vaccines, I’m pleased that students can return to a normal school year in September,” said Alberta minister of education Adriana LaGrange. “The safety of students and staff remains our number one priority, and we have a detailed plan that includes contingency scenarios for continuing student learning if there is a significant change in the COVID-19

situation. We will continue to follow the expert advice of Alberta’s chief medical officer of health and are ready to make changes if needed.”

Alberta minister of health Tyler Shandro commented, “Making sure Alberta’s schools are safe is one of our government’s top priorities. I am confident that this guidance will help keep students and staff safe, and our province’s children and youth can go on to thrive in the upcoming school year.”

In an effort to increase accessibility to COVID-19 vaccines, immunizations will be available through temporary clinics in schools for students in Grades 7 to 12 as well as teachers and staff. Starting on September 7, students, teachers and staff can receive whichever dose for which they are eligible in school.

In order to receive the vaccines, parent or guardian consent for students will be required through consent forms.

However, if students in Grades 7 to 12 do not wish to wait for an in-school clinic in which to be vaccinated, bookings for first and second doses are available province wide.

Camrose will be holding a walk-in clinic on August 28 at Camrose Health Centre, 5510-46 Avenue, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.

Albertans can book appointments through AHS online by calling 811 or through participating pharmacies.

First-dose walk-in clinics are available at multiple locations.

“Vaccines are the most important protective measure for students, teachers, parents and guardians as we prepare for back to school,” said Alberta chief

medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw. “I encourage parents and guardians to arrange vaccine appointments for themselves and their children as soon as possible. This will help further strengthen protection in schools and benefit all youth, whether or not they can be immunized yet.”

Should there be a significant change in COVID-19 situations, the Alberta government has contingency scenarios to continue student learning similar to those implemented in the previous school year.

According to the 202122 school year plan and health guidance: • Students, families and school staff should continue to screen daily for symptoms using the Alberta Health Daily Checklist and get tested if they are symptomatic.

• The Guidance for Respiratory Illness Prevention and Management in Schools builds on public health practices used to reduce the spread of respiratory viruses, such as COVID-19, influenza and other infections in school settings.

Best practices to reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses will continue, including: If a student or staff member has any of the following core COVID-19 symptoms (new, or worsening and not related to other known causes), they are required to isolate for 10 days from onset of symptoms, or until they receive a negative COVID-19 test result, as per provincial guidelines fever, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, loss of sense of smell or taste, sore throat runny nose (adults only).

Woman in traffic yelling at motorists August 17

A complaint was received of a male in his mid-40s with short grey hair and glasses, who was exposing himself in the area of 68 Street and Marler Drive. When he was confronted, he fled on foot. Extensive patrols were made, but he was not located.

This incident is still under investigation.

August 16

A local business in the north end of Camrose had its compound entered and

two jerry cans, fuel and a propane bottle were stolen.

A elderly male suffering from dementia was reported missing and was later found suffering from self-inflicted wounds.

EMS attended and transported the male for medical treatment.

Police responded to a complaint of a female standing in traffic, yelling at passing motorists. Checks revealed the female was wanted on warrants and was arrested.

What I like about that is…

I’ve been taking a virtual course for the past seven weeks. I thought it would be interesting, maybe even fun, but I didn’t expect it to have practical value.

Lucky me–it’s been incredibly practical!

One of the program activities has made a practical difference on more than one occasion.

The instructor described a way to respond to something you don’t particularly like–especially if it’s a suggestion or recommendation from someone else. The process is especially useful if that someone is a person you care about, or you don’t want to offend. You don’t want to be phony and say you like something if you don’t. At the same time, you don’t want to be pressured into accepting something you do not want.

Our instructor said, “Even if you do not like a proposal or idea, you can probably find at least ten per cent that is okay with you. Focus on the ten per cent that is acceptable to you.” And then the instructor gave us a process. *** Three other participants and myself have agreed to a Zoom call once a week to practice using what we are learning in the program.

Last week, our foursome used the instructor’s process to practice using “the ten percent rule”. We were to pick a topic, and then exchange ideas. The process was: • Decide the topic. The one we selected was, “How can we get better at using what we’re learning in this program?” We agreed that we would do three rounds of the process.

• The first person suggests something–in our case, an idea about how we could get better at using what we’re learning.

• The second person says–no matter what his or her over-all opinion of the first person’s suggestion– “What I like about that idea is…” Then the second person goes on to suggest a second idea.

• The third person says, about the second person’s idea, “What I like about that idea is…” and adds a third suggestion.

• The fourth person says, about the third person’s idea, “What I like about that idea is…” and then adds a fourth suggestion.

And so on and so on, for however many rounds the group has agreed at the beginning.

Remembering Lougheed

Some of us could do well to remember the thoughtful and considerable legacy of the leadership of Peter Lougheed.

In 1980, I started working for the Public Affairs Bureau as a photographer, and as such, was constantly in the company of ministers and MLAs and the Premier, providing documentary photographs of many of the operations of the government of the time. Many a time, I would sit in the tail seat of a King Air airplane,, listening to the conversations of cabinet members and highlevel bureaucrats. There was an optimism in the air that is lacking in our discourse now. There was never a hint of arrogance in the tone of things that I can recall, but a real effort to make Alberta a place for everyone. This tone would later change when then Premier Ralph Klein and his executive assistant

Rod Love changed the Public Affairs Bureau from a disseminator of information on the workings of government to the public, to the propaganda wing of the government that sought to control the messages the public would receive.

In my time in the back of boardrooms, lurking on the sidelines of public events, following the Premier and government officials around and documenting and supporting them and government ministries, it would have been easy for Mr. Lougheed to ignore me as just another underling. But, eventually, he would call me by name when he saw me in he corridors of the Legislature, and acknowledge me with a hello. The man I saw lacked pretention and expressed warmth, unlike what we currently see in leadership.

He wanted an Alberta that was not totally reliant on fossil fuels, that had a diverse

economy. He brought labour and social reforms, including AISH for the disabled. He believed in the good of the commons, in making Albertans the owners of their resources, and gave us, as a gift to the people, Kananskis Country, for which we now have to pay. He brought forward coal policy that stopped strip mining on the Eastern slopes. He increased royalties on oil and gas, and started the Heritage Fund for the future. He limited the expansion of the tar sands so that they would be manageable, unlike the laissez-faire approach of Klein. If anyone is pining for the good old days, don’t think of the Social Credit, but consider when we had a progressive conservative party.

It was a fun conversation. As I watched and listened and spoke, I felt myself loosening up and relaxing. Knowing that the next person would say, “What I like about that idea is…” made it easier for me to suggest something.

I knew my idea would not get shot down or discounted.

The other thing that began to emerge was that each one of us thought of something we’d never thought of before. All of us began to see possibilities that would not have occurred to any of us before we did our practice exercise.

By the end of our three rounds, it took about five minutes–maybe not even–to agree on a shared action that was not anyone’s specific idea, and that was better than anything any of us had thought of before. ***

As a sidebar, like many of us who have spent time in virtual events during the past year and a half, our foursome has had to figure out how to accommodate different time zones. We live in four different time zones in North America and Europe, yet we can see and hear each other in real time. How cool is that? ***

Many things about the past year and a half have been challenging. With COVID numbers surging again, we’re nowhere near out of the woods yet. Heavy sigh.

On the other hand, I suspect most of us have had our minds and hearts expanded by having to learn things and do things that would not have occurred to us before.

Perhaps more than one gift is emerging from this time of adversity. ***

25 Years Ago This Week – from Aug. 27, 1996 edition • Five Camrose firefighters took on the world and won, at the World Firefighters Games held in Edmonton. Peter Krich, Don Rosland, Paul King, Norm Zunti, and Joel Cassady won the gold medal in the Hose Laying Competition, bettering teams from Germany, Italy, Australia, and from across Canada.

• More than 1500 youth and adults were able to take home some very special memories from the Canadian Lutheran Youth Gathering held in Camrose. The gathering was the largest ever for the Biennial Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada event, which was held for the first time outside of a major urban centre.

• The club championship at the Camrose Golf Club attracted 78 golfers in the men’s division, the largest turnout in memory. The overall club champion was Frank Van Dornick, who shot 142 for 36 holes. Runner-up in the championship flight was Len Powell at 151. Third was Paul Lapell at 152.

50 Years Ago This Week – from Aug. 24, 1971 edition • A week before the Provincial Elections were held, the Hon. Harry Strom, Premier of Alberta was in town campaigning with Lawrence Reierson, Social Credit candidate.

Peter Lougheed, opposition leader, was also in town campaigning with Gordon Stromberg P.C. candidate. Grant Notley, leader of the New Democratic Party was soon to arrive to campaign with his party’s candidate, Keith Boulter of Rosalind.

• Shakiest Gun in the West, starring Don Knotts, was showing at the Bailey Theatre.

Admission was 35¢.

• A special meeting of City Council was called to specifically deal with a request from the Taxpayers’ Association. The Aldermen questioned a $335.00 expense item in connection with Mayor Swanson’s trip to Toronto to attend a meeting of the National Board of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, of which he is a member. The objection was based on two points: The first that the expenditure had not been previously authorized. The second that the National Body was conducting National business, so that body should be responsible for travel expenses. In the end, council approved all bills presented for payment.

Student Transportation If you were a student in Beaver County, Camrose County or Flagstaff County last year and your information (such as land location and school) remains the same, we’ve got you covered. If you’ve changed schools or locations, you’ll need to be in touch with the BRSD Transportation department to confirm your busing for the coming year.

BRSD and EIk Island Catholic Schools students in the City of Camrose are required to apply each new school year for bus service. *NEW THIS YEAR* Applications received after August 13, 2021 may not be processed until after September 1, 2021.

Wondering about COVID restrictions?

BRSD wants students to be able to return to many of the school activities they have missed. In order to offer sports teams, option classes such as Band/Music or Drama, have assemblies and more, students and staff will be required to wear masks on the school bus, as they enter the school and as they move through the hallways or common areas. Masks can be removed once students are settled into classrooms.

Every student and staff member is expected to stay home if they are sick.

BRSD will also be participating in the Alberta Health vaccine program, which will bring vaccine clinics to schools, for students age 12+ who have permission from their parents to be immunized against COVID-19.

BRSD will review these practices throughout the school year. Some measures could be removed or additional measures could be implemented depending on realities.

Police responded to a complaint of a male suffering from mental health concerns. When police located the male he was in significant need of assistance and was apprehended under the mental health act and transported to an approved facility.

Police responded to a collision in the area of 73 Street and 48 Avenue involving a pickup truck rear ending a SUV. The female driver of the pickup showed signs of impairment and blew a fail resulting in immediate roadside sanctions.

Police received a report of a stolen BMX bicycle from the area of 49 Ave. and 52 St. which is still under investigation.

Police responded to numerous mental health wellbeing checks throughout the day.

Police received a call about a female who left a suicide note. After extensive efforts to locate her she was located and taken seek mental health assistance.

• Promoting frequent hand hygiene and good respiratory etiquette.

• Schools are encouraged to have a plan for students and staff who develop symptoms to wait in a separate area until they can go home.

• Masking is not provincially required in school settings for any age group, except on school buses.

• AHS, through a zone Medical Officer of Health or their designate, may recommend masking to manage an outbreak and prevent more widespread transmission of a respiratory illness.

• Zone medical officers of health and their designates may also recommend additional measures if a school experiences a respiratory illness outbreak including screening for symptoms and cohorting.

• School authorities have the ability and the corresponding accountability to put in place local measures, such as physical distancing, cohorting and masking requirements, that may exceed provincial guidance.

To further promote a safe school year, the Province strongly encourages all eligible Albertans, including students, teaching staff, parents and guardians, to get vaccinated with both doses before the school year begins.

Possible firearm complaint August 13

Camrose Police responded to a complaint of a male carrying what appeared to be a firearm. When located and safely dealt with, it was determined the firearm was a pellet gun. The male was warned and the pellet gun was seized for safe keeping.

A male driving a motor vehicle was stopped for misuse of plate and was also unregistered. The male was issued violation tickets.

Police received a complaint of a stolen bicycle from the area of 49 Avenue and 52 Street.

A complaint was received of a possible impaired driver.

The vehicle was located and a 18-year-old male blew a caution, resulting in an immediate roadside suspension.

August 12

Police were called to two separate businesses throughout the day to deal with unruly customers. Both occurrences were mediated and the individuals were sent on their way.

Two separate complaints of online frauds were received. The incidents are still under investigation.

August 11

Police were advised that a male had registered a Harley Davidson motorcycle which had been stolen five years earlier in Leduc. Police attended the residence of the male, who stated he purchased the motorcycle from someone in Calgary without conducting the proper checks.

The motorcycle was seized

by Police and the original owner was contacted.

Referendum to be held with election

Elections Alberta has received the Orders in Council to conduct a Referendum Vote in conjunction with the 2021 Alberta Municipal Elections and the Alberta Senate Election on Oct. 18.

Both referendum questions allow for a “yes” vote or a “no” vote. The two questions are: Should section 36(2) of the Constitution Act, 1982– Parliament and the government of Canada’s commitment to the principle of making equalization payments–be removed from the constitution?

Do you want Alberta to adopt year-round Daylight Saving Time, which is summer hours, eliminating the need to change our clocks twice a year?

All local jurisdictions holding elections on Oct. 18 will facilitate the vote by

City proposes increase to council salary

During the August 16 City of Camrose regular council meeting, administration presented a report to council for approval of updates to the Council Remuneration Policy.

Administration recommended council consider approving remuneration levels in preparation for the incoming council in November.

Currently, the base salary amount for the City of Camrose mayor is $62,534.78 and for council members $21,633.50.

Mayor Norm Mayer began the discussion. “This is an item that seems to get band-aided enough.

Nobody ever wants to make a decision, especially during an election year, but I am inclined to think people who want to run for council, especially where they have a job where they are getting paid and they have to hire someone to come in and fill their spot, it is costing them money and I think it is something we have to look at.”

He continued, “The suggestions we have before us are to strike a balance of remuneration for the position of council and/or mayor, based on comparables in other communities and other centres.

“Camrose traditionally has been on the low side– considerably lower than other communities–maybe because we felt donating our time was why we are here, but there are some people who may feel they are not in that position and I think we have to respect that.”

The information brought forward by City administration based on comparisons of salaries (including extended health benefits, CPP, life insurance and WCB) for mayor and councillors to nine other communities and averaging out salaries recommended effective January 1, 2022, the structure of salaries would be as follows: $70,000 (total compensation cost of $77,000) for mayor, and $40,000 (total compensation cost of $46,000) for each councillor.

Councillor Wayne Throndson was not in favour of the proposed increase in remuneration, suggesting $30,000 (for councillors) would be a more appropriate number.

province and I think that is where we find ourselves.

“I would say most people who run do it out of a sense of civic responsibility.

It is not for the money. We have had that discussion around this table that it is not about the money, and it concerns me that the more people get paid, we run the risk of watering down that sense of civic responsibility. I am also concerned about the optics of giving a 100 per cent pay increase

when we tell our other staff members ‘times are tough’ and we are in the midst of negotiations where we are trying to be fiscally responsible with taxpayers’ dollars.”

Throndson referred to the percentile formula done by the City manager to come up with the proposed remuneration for mayor and council.

“I think at the 20th percentile for municipalities, that gets us around

$30,000 for City council, and the mayor would be approximately the same(as current). It might be a slight pay decrease.”

Councillor Kevin Hycha agreed with councillor Throndson, indicating he had concerns with an increase to $40,000. “One of the other items that we have talked about over and over again is the eight versus six (councillors). A city our size has eight council-

lors, where a normal city would only have six.”

Hycha agreed with Throndson that the optics are not good, considering council has asked other staff to hold or take reductions in salaries. “Then we turn around and increase our wages. Yes, we are far behind, we have always been far behind, so I think the step to $30,000 is a great stride and I would go along with that one.”

Councillor PJ Stasko said, “It is sort of arbitrary to pick even a percentile, but I agree with the formula and following a formula.

It does set a roadmap going forward for future councils.

I would propose the 25th percentile.”

Councillor Max Lindstrand commented, “I would feel the first step is to change the policy because this isn’t really even considered an option.

We have a community committee; we haven’t heard from them. Let’s change the policy to allow for it, then go for it or maybe I am missing something here.”

City manager Malcolm Boyd referred to the draft policy included in the package presented to council.

“The intention was that part of the policy where we talked about the committee be removed and replaced with language that talked to the comparators and the target percentile. Take the committee out and replace it with these comparators and decide which percentile you want to compare yourself to on that list.”

Throndson further explained, “The desire is to set a formula that is subjective and takes out that objective desire of members of the community.

“I think, to a certain extent, for this policy, for this day, for this council, set the numbers, work backwards. What is the percentile based on certain comparators and then, in the future, it will work that you have to go with a number.”

Boyd responded, “We (administration) can do the math if we know what the desire of Council is in terms of the model, and absolutely, we can change comparators.”

Councillor David Ofrim commented, “We have to come up with a model that has some logic to it. I appreciate administration’s attempt to come up with a formula and we have to figure out on what the formula is based.”

Coucillor Stasko suggested a 25 percentile, based on the eight comparators.

Councillor Wood said he felt there should be an

adjustment considering eight councillors versus six.

“So our total cost of governance would be whether six or eight. If your average comes out at $40,000 for a six-person council, then that is $30,000 for an eight-person council. That should be part of the formula. I can live with the $30,000 amount and decide whether we do that all at once or over four years.”

Mayor Mayer made reference to the fact that other municipalities also include per diems which Camrose has not for many years. “It is amazing what council can make up on per diems compared to a fix salary, which I think is fair to everybody. That is why I think we should stick to a fixed salary.”

Mayer also commented on the concern of trying to justify the increase to other employees having to forego increases. “I don’t think any of them are working at 20 percent of what the average income for that position would be, and if they are, I would gladly vote on a raise for them.”

Mayer also spoke to why the discussion on mayor and council remuneration was brought up prior to the municipal election.

“It is better for an old council to get beat up than a new council trying to justify it.”

Throndson added that the pay increase would take effect on January 1, 2022, and cost of living would take effect on January 1, 2023.

Administration will be redrafting the remuneration policy with council’s recommendations to use a formula to calculate the remuneration whereby it would be the 50th percentile of the base salary for comparator communities, as named in the policy, and adjusted for eight councillors rather than the typical six. This would put a councillor’s salary at approximately $30,000.

A similar calculation will happen for the mayor’s salary, without the adjustment for number of councillors.

Administration will be bringing the draft policy back to council for approval at the next council meeting.

Incumbent Agnes Hoveland has put her name in to run for City of Camrose council for the upcoming October 18 municipal election.

Hoveland was re-elected to Council in 2017 after serving four years prior for a total of eight years, and as a longtime resident of Camrose and brings her commitment to the commu-

nity of Camrose, along with a great deal of experience.

She is an alumna of Camrose Lutheran College now University of Alberta, Augustana Faculty and the University of Alberta Hospital School of Nursing. In 2007 she retired from an extensive and varied professional career in health care.

“We need to continue to provide opportunities for public consultation and feedback, including listening and making sure the public is totally aware of what is transpiring,” said Hoveland, with regards to involving residents in decision making.

In sharing her thoughts on bringing industry and business to Camrose, Hoveland remarked, “We need to be very intentional in recognizing and building realistically on the strengths that this community already has–and there

are many–as we search for and attract business and industry that works best for this community.”

Hoveland said it is vital for council to continue to balance needs versus wants and continue to prudently manage the City assets, reserve funds and the timing of capital projects.

“There are a lot of things we would like to have, but we have to be very prudent on how we pay for that, and right now, our biggest challenges are the wastewater treatment plant and the new public works building, which are essential.”

She referred to numerous City projects and initiatives that have had a huge impact on the quality of life in Camrose, including: the recent upgrades to the Aquatic Centre; council’s commitment of $3 million annually for 10 years to road projects; the 48th

Avenue bridge upgrades and addition of the pedestrian underpass; energysaving initiatives including the installation of solar panels and LED lights; and the development and implementation of a Arts and Culture Master Plan.

In terms of moving forward, Hoveland said that Camrose needs to continue to support University of Alberta Augustana Campus. “The community needs to advocate for post-secondary education in rural communities and the privilege of having a world-class university within our community.”

Hoveland also commented on the contribution of St. Mary’s Hospital to Camrose. “We are lucky to have a hospital that has been innovative with numerous pilot projects and pivotal to changes around the province.

“I believe fundamental-

ly there are a lot of opportunities that are yet to be explored that Council would be open to hearing. I look forward to the next four years to be able to champion new initiatives and to deliver on enhancing the quality of life in Camrose.”

In conclusion, Hoveland said she cherishes the sense of invested community and pride in Camrose.

“This is a unique community for its size when assessing the level of social services, areas of excellence in health and education, dedicated green space, recreational facilities and events and programs. We have a lot to be proud of.

“We offer a quality of life that is attractive, and we need to maintain that in a fiscally responsible manner.”

Churchmice brings Beauty and the Beast

The charming familyfriendly love story recanting the woes of a beast rescued by the kindness of a beauty is coming to the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Centre from February 3 until the 12, 2022.

The stage production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast will be brought to the delight of audiences by the Churchmice Players, a local (and expanding) group with a reputation for bringing incredible live theatre to the stages of Camrose.

“Coming back out of the COVID shutdown, we thought this will be the show that brings people out.

It is family oriented,” said director Dave McDougall.

Opening Night Gala will take place on Thursday, February 3, 2022, with 10 shows, finishing on Saturday, February 12, 2022.

“We have been taking on a bit more challenging shows,” said Beast producer Theo Thirsk, and this production is no exception, with an expected cast of anywhere from 30 to 65.

“The last few shows, we have had remarkable talent coming out,” commented McDougall. “When auditions come, we will have to look very carefully, because we will have to see what kind of a talent pool we end up with.”

Auditions run from 7 to 9 p.m. on the following dates: Wednesday, September 8; Thursday, September 9; Friday, September 10; and will be held at the United Church, 4829-50 Street.

Call-backs will take place on Sunday, September 12, from 2 until 5 p.m.

“Now that we have the facility (Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre), it is a huge draw,” noted McDougall. “It is a first-class theatre.”

He added that a production this size could only be done on a stage like that of the Lougheed Centre, and both McDougall and

Thirsk recall, somewhat fondly, the shows they put on in other venues where they literally had to build the stage.

Rehearsals will begin on September 15 and will take place on Wednesdays and Fridays from 7 until 9 p.m. and Sundays from 3 until 5 p.m.; with dance rehearsals on Sundays from 6:30 until 8 p.m., with dance instructor Dustin Muise from Edmonton, formerly from Camrose.

Rehearsals will take place at the United Church.

“They have been so easy to work with and cooperative,” commented Thirsk.

Todd Sikorski, designer, has his work cut out for him, and has already contacted outside resources, exploring the feasibility of outsourcing costumes.

“Wendy Wenig will be working with Todd,” said Thirsk, adding that the Churchmice have been working on mentorships in an effort to encourage others to get involved in the overall production of shows.

“We even have people mentoring to direct,” said McDougall. “They will be there at the rehearsals seeing how things go, and eventually, I may just say ‘Now you have a scene.’”

The set for this play has its own set of challenges, and McDougall said they are currently looking for a carpenter to assist with designing blueprints and building of sets.

“One of the problems we have, too, is a facility large enough to accommodate building of sets,” said Thirsk, adding that if there is anyone in the community with a space large enough to build and store sets while being built, from around October until move in, to contact Churchmice Players.

Similar to other productions, such as Mamma Mia!, Beauty will be performed with recorded

music, as opposed to a live orchestra.

“This gives us at least a quarter more floor space on the stage,” explained Thirsk, “And the other thing, the actors are able to get up close to the audience.”

Stage management, a huge part of any production, will be handled by Scott Lorenson, who is no stranger to the stage.

Keeping everyone safe

To create the safest environment for cast and crew and in response to several inquiries about the subject, the Churchmice board of directors has made it mandatory that all cast and crew members produce documentation of completed COVID vaccination at time of auditions.

“There were many factors that influenced the decision, and it was an incredibly difficult one for us,” explained Churchmice publicist Janine Carroll.

“We received concerns from some of our members that every precaution should be taken to protect members and their families.”

She further explained that non-vaccinated people will have to be isolated if they come into contact with someone who tests positive for COVID, and vaccinated people will not. “As with all our large musical productions, a great deal of time and money are invested in order to get them on stage. Churchmice cannot risk the loss of investment due to a COVID outbreak among cast and crew, and see this step as necessary to mitigate the risk.”

Water, water not quite everywhere

By Scott Tibballs Growing up in a drought can leave an impression When I was a kid, I came across a photo in the local newspaper that has never left me. It was the height of summer in Australia, and we were years into a drought that was drying out the country, leaving it a tinderbox ready to burn—and burn it did, through all the forests, fields and fauna.

The focus of the image was a cow lying on its side in a field that was blackened and smoking, still smouldering from the fire that had gone through hours before.

Over the cow stood a farmer, and slung over his slumped shoulder was the rifle he had just used to put the cow out of its misery, because despite the heat, the cow hadn’t died in the fire it hadn’t been able to escape.

One hand, out front, held the stock of the rifle stable. His other hand was covering his down-turned face, and he was crying.

Behind him, other cattle could be seen. All in the same state: blackened, dead or dying.

That image, published almost 20 years ago in Australia, is seared into my brain. It’s what I think of when I think about climate change.

I grew up in Australia during a period known as the Millennium Drought. It was from the mid-to-late 1990s through to about 2010, and is regarded as the worst drought in Australia since European settlement.

Daily newspapers reported not just the weather forecast, but also the amount of water held in the reservoirs and dams around the city where I lived.

I remember this because I read the newspaper daily from about the age of eight at the behest of my mother. It was one of my daily chores, and her reasoning was that if I was old enough for action movies and video games, I was old enough to know about the real thing—and the real thing was ugly.

Growing up in a drought, I spent a lot of time thinking about climate change, which, to this day, I think of as all about water—an abundance, or lack thereof.

In those formative years of my life, I had the importance of water drilled into my skull daily.

It wasn’t just newspapers and the rest of the media and the government and the scientists, it was also the water bill each month (yes, water is metered in Australia, and when there were drought conditions in place, you paid a lot of money).

Under the iron rule of my parents, that meant we had twominute showers, no water fights, no washing your car in your driveway, no watering your lawn.

Any gardens on our street that were suspiciously green had little signs somewhere visible that defensively explained that the homeowners used self-collected tank water to keep their front yards from turning into a dust-bowl.

Outside of the cities, the situation wasn’t just dead gardens and insufficiently long showers—it was true misery.

I learned that climate change isn’t just quirky changes to weather patterns—it’s prolonged drought, fire, floods, and death.

It compounds itself, and gets worse with each year, never giving anyone a break. It’s lost livelihoods, communities demolished, families destroyed.

As I write this on Monday, August 9, in Fernie, BC, global news outlets are reporting about a study from the United Nations that unequivocally places the blame for climate change on human activity.

I listened to it being talked about on the radio, I’ve taken the time to go have an entirely inadequate read of the dot points of the report itself, and while I think the report is interesting and worth a deeper dive, I can’t help but feel both utter misery that this conversation is still happening, and bewilderment that climate change is still a topic of debate at all.

When I was 13, I wondered if there was even a future to look forward to. In my corner of planet Earth, there was no water, the news was all about how everything was going wrong, and how farmers were losing their livelihoods and dying (mostly to suicide) as a result of what the climate was doing. It all seemed very urgent.

That particular drought broke in 2010 (right after a fire season that killed 173 people and countless wildlife), but agricultural land in Australia continues to degrade from longer, hotter, dryer summers. The fires are more frequent, and they burn for longer and deep into cooler seasons.

Years later, living in another country on another continent in a different hemisphere, I still cringe every time I go past a luscious green lawn being drowned by a sprinkler that’s been going at it all day, and I still feel guilt any time I waste water I didn’t need to waste. I know I’m living somewhere different, with a different climate, and different rain patterns but, as we’ve all just seen, droughts can sneak up and hang around. The longer they last, the more dangerous they get, the more risk of fire.

The rain that we got this weekend was certainly appreciated, but I think it’s probably time for a little more appreciation and planning. I think Canadians need to start appreciating water a little more, even if just to temper some entitlements.

But what does that mean in practice? I think that means less wastage, more water tanks, automatic summer water restrictions and more public education on the capacity of our water supplies.

There’s a lot of water here in Canada, but it’s only here until it isn’t.

Alberta Health Services will be transitioning what remains of the linen and laundry services to a private company beginning in September of this year.

K-Bro Linen Services, a company with facilities located in Calgary and Edmonton, among other places in Canada, will be taking over the in-house service starting in the rural Calgary zone in September, followed by the South Zone, Central Zone and finally North Zone.

“K-Bro Linen Systems has a proven track record of providing high-quality laundry services,” said AHS president and CEO Dr. Verna Yiu. “AHS is looking forward to working with them to ensure the long-term sustainability of laundry service in our province.”

Following an extensive RFP process, in April of this year, AHS awarded a contract to K-Bro Linen Systems for the provision of linen services in the remaining part of the province, where they are currently provided in-house. More than twothirds of linen services are already provided by K-Bro Linen Systems in Alberta, including all linen services in both Calgary (urban), Edmonton, Hinton and Edson.

Transition will take approximately 34 weeks to complete, and AHS expects K-Bro Linen Systems to be providing linen services throughout the province by April 1, 2022.

This transition will impact approximately 334 full-time, part-time

and casual employees, and AHS is committed to working with them and their union throughout this process to explore potential options in accordance with the collective agreement.

According to AHS, to maintain the existing inhouse services, more than

$38 million in upgrades would be required to ensure both safety and quality of services. Alternatively, AHS would need to invest more than $100 million to build new modern linen systems across the province.

AHS officials stated that the contract with

K-Bro Linen Systems will allow for much-needed investment in this area, while ensuring AHS can focus on other high priority areas, including initiatives focused on reducing wait times and enhancing accessibility of healthcare services across all Zones within AHS.

Steinke builds Chevelle to his own style

Cal Steinke, formerly of Bawlf, owns a 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle automobile.

“I was working in Edmonton and found this car the day before my birthday. I saw it at a stop light and then I found it on a site later. I bought the car and then did a frame-off restoration on the car,” shared Cal. “I’m just working out the kinks in the car and then it has to be painted.

The engine is a 496 stroker with a turbo 400 transmission, and the rear end is brand new as well. For the most part, it is built for some speed,” explained Cal. “Everything is pretty much new. I am going to be doing the wiring this winter, but I would like to get it painted first. I’m going to paint it blue. Originally, it was a gold colour and it is not going back to that colour, no one wants to see that. It will be a nice blue,” laughed Cal. “The vehicle would have been done faster, but it took over a year to get my rims in because of COVID-19.”

He added a stereo system for his enjoyment and some modern features.

“It was a good build and everything seemed to go together well. Just the rims, I had trouble bringing it. Now I’m still trying to break in the engine,” he added. “I’ve built a few vehicles with my dad, but this might be my last one. It

is a lot of money invested in building a car. With a motor like this, it takes a lot of gas as well,” said Cal. “The body of this Chevelle was in good shape. I just replaced some quarter panels. They were not even

In 1972, the Chevelles featured single-unit parking side marker lights on their front fenders, outside of a revised twin-bar grille.

The Malibu was an upscale Chevelle. All Malibus had concealed wipers. The SS equipment option requirements remained the same as those in 1971, with any optional V8. The 1972 Chevelle series had wide enough appeal to qualify as America’s secondbest-selling car. Base versions again included a fourmodel wagon series. Upscale versions were Malibus, including the convertible models.

A four-door hardtop used the same body as the 1968-71 models and although it was attractive, it was the least popular body style in the lineup. It was not available with the overhead valve Turbo-Thrift six-cylinder engine. With that V8, the Malibu Sport Coupe was the top seller by far starting at $2,923. The six-cylinder version ran $90 less. Powertrain options included the 175-horsepower 350-cubic-inch V8 and 240-horsepower 402-cubic-inch, as well as a 454 that produced 270 horsepower under the net rating system.

The 1972 Chevelle was the last year for the cowl induction option for the 454 engine and was not even mentioned in the 1972 Chevelle brochure.

The Chevrolet Chevelle is a mid-sized automobile that was produced by Chevrolet in three generations for the 1964 through 1978 model years.

“The seats were fine as well. The back seat is original, everything is original except the door panels. I had the originals, but I don’t like them to have badges, because I like it pretty plain. The only thing I might do is add a Chevy black stripe along the side. I’m not sure yet, I don’t like to add too much to it,” said Cal. Part of the General Motors (GM) A-body platform, the Chevelle was one of Chevrolet’s most successful nameplates. Body styles included coupes, sedans, convertibles, and station wagons.

“I had a 1972 Heavy Chevy in high school, but I had to give it up. That is why I bought this one.

I wanted one more project that I could do with my dad.”

The Heavy Chevy is a Chevelle sport coupe with a domed hood, hood pins, a unique stripe kit and a blacked-out front treatment. That model was only available in 1971 and 1972.

AHS opening up facilities for more beds

According to a news release from Alberta Health Services (AHS) president and CEO Dr. Verna Yiu, AHS facilities are open and ready to provide care to Albertans requiring service.

In the following excerpts from a letter issued by Yiu, she addressed concerns regarding bed reductions in some Alberta healthcare facilities.

Let us be clear–there is no bed shortage in Alberta. Our system is stable, safe, and available for any patient who needs it.

If a patient needs a bed–whether it be in an emergency department, or on a hospital ward–a space will always be available.

Despite Yiu’s reassurance that there are no bed shortages, she did state that AHS is dealing with some temporary bed reductions at some Alberta Hospitals.

This was not unexpected, as we emerge from an unprecedented pandemic that tested our healthcare system’s capacity and pushed our frontline teams to their limits. We will be dealing with the impacts of the pandemic for some time.

This is a challenge being experienced across the country. Our staff and physicians have worked extremely hard and deserve a break, meaning they are less available to work extra shifts than they would have been a year ago.

Many are travelling to see loved ones they have been unable to see in 20-odd months.

This means that temporary bed reductions are necessary at sites where staffing challenges are significant.

Yiu pointed out that even though some sites may be experiencing staffing challenges, the vast majority of beds remain open and available for patient care.

AHS has about 8,500 acute care beds across the province–98.3 per cent of

those beds are open and available for patients.

In addition, AHS has about 1,200 emergency department care spaces across the province. Of those, 98.9 per cent are open and available.

She noted in her letter that even if a bed may be closed, there isn’t a patient in need of that bed and that there is less demand in summer months, so historically AHS has reduced beds to accommodate staffing holidays.

This is important context to keep in mind when you hear about claims of a bed shortage.

In other instances, AHS has been able to alleviate the need for bed reductions or service reductions by recruiting locums or redeploying staff and/or physicians to a site that is experiencing staffing challenges. Again, this is common practice over the summer months.

Yiu indicated that emergency department bed reductions are infrequent, but do occur occasionally.

This is not something AHS wants to happen, but these situations happen every year, especially in the summer. It’s not a result of a policy or resource change.

As AHS deals with these situations, it’s important to know that vacancy filling and recruitment is always a priority for AHS and takes place all year, in real time.

Over the last year, AHS has filled more than 1,000 vacancies for registered nurses. Additionally, there are approximately 1,700 more RNs working in AHS today than there were in 2019.

AHS is pursuing recruitment strategies that aim to fill existing vacancies by the end of August or September and earlier, where possible. As the pandemic winds down, we are also moving staff who were working on the pandemic response into their original positions; this will help fill vacancies.

Daisy Mary Stagg December 25, 1931 ~ August 18, 2021 Daisy Stagg of Camrose, Alberta passed away at the age of 89 years after a short battle with cancer.

Daisy was born on Christmas Day in 1931 on the farm near Grande Prairie to John and Margaret Dryer, weighing only 2.5 pounds. They used the warming breadbox of the oven as an incubator. She was the youngest of nine children.

In 1952, she married Donald Stagg and together they had three children. They moved from Grande Prairie to Camrose in 1960.

Daisy worked as head cashier at IGA, but also spent 23 years as a Health Care Aide at Bethany LTC. She loved getting back together for lunch with past Bethany coworkers.

They enjoyed their yearly camping and fishing trips at Carson Lake with her daughter Marilyn, Terry and Chris in their motorhome. Natalie and Ryan often joined them, coming back home well fed and full of stories and memories.

In her retirement, she spent countless hours gardening and weeding their large garden, doing yardwork, knitting, crossstitching, pickling dills, carrots and relishes, and having garage sales. She made the best chocolate cream cheese muffins and loved to share her cooking and baking.

She loved playing bingo and travelling to different casinos, often stopping in to see Barb at work and having a coffee, or going out to Swiss Chalet for supper.

Always together, Don and Daisy were avid card players and loved playing Cribbage at the Senior Centre. She also played Canasta and played in many tournaments and cherished the friendships she made along the way. In 2017, she was absolutely delighted when she got to sit in the second row at the Daniel O’Donnell concert.

She enjoyed watching curling and keeping up with politics. She looked forward to getting her hair done every Wednesday, and cards and coffee on Friday afternoons. She was always delighted to have a new great-grandchild in her arms and was always willing to help babysit with Shirley.

She will be missed dearly by her husband Don Stagg; son Robert (Shirley) Stagg; son-in-law Terry Graf; grandchildren Barbara (Shane) Stagg, Natalie (Tim) Mills, Ryan (Yiling) Stagg, Chris (Amanda) Graf; and great-grandchildren Rayna, Sarah, Aria, and Logan, Matthew and Noah, and Wesley.

She was predeceased by her parents John and Margaret Dryer; eight siblings; infant son Dean Stagg; daughter Marilyn Graf; and dog Darcy.

The family would like to thank the staff and physicians at St. Mary’s Hospital for the amazing care they took of Daisy in her final weeks.

At Daisy’s request, there will be no funeral held.

Cremation has taken place.

July 26, 1936 ~ August 13, 2021 Lawrence was born on July 26, 1936 in Daysland, Alberta to his parents Steve and Eva Makarowski. Lawrence went to school at Willow, just north of the family farm.

Lawrence worked construction and on the family farm until he met Audrey.

They were married on April 29, 1961 at Koppernick. Lawrence was blessed with three loving daughters, Cheryl, Charlene, and Roxanne.

Lawrence and Audrey farmed in the Daysland area until 1999, when they retired to Camrose. Lawrence enjoyed the outdoors, playing horseshoes, pool and, in his later years, floor curling.

He also enjoyed getting together with family and friends and going to functions with his friend Mary Percy.

Lawrence lost his battle on August 13, 2021.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Cheryl (Barry) Ness of Camrose, and their children Karlie (David) Lust of Edmonton and Cody (Ashley) Ness of Camrose; daughter Charlene Kroetsch (George Lepard) of Camrose, and their children Briana (Brad) Striech of Camrose and Clayton Kroetsch (Amy) of Camrose; Travis Kroetsch (Kelly) of Daysland and Brooke (Randal) Bendfeld, children of Roxanne and Allan; sisters Jean (George) Gabruck of Sedgewick, Irene Howrish of Edmonton, and Dorris (Kenny) Miciak of Edmonton; sister-in-law Celine Makarowski of Camrose; as well as ten great-grandchildren.

Lawrence was predeceased by his loving wife Audrey; daughter Roxanne; parents Steve and Eva; brother Milton; brother-in-law Irvin Howrish; and sons-in-law Richard and Alan Kroetsch.

A Funeral Service was held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 19, 2021, from the St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, Camrose, with Rev. Mark Bayrock as celebrant.

Interment has taken place in the Camrose Valleyview Cemetery.

Serving your community for over 110 years Stewart Basil Campbell December 9, 1948 ~ August 17, 2021 Stewart “Stew” Basil Campbell of Camrose, Alberta passed away on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at the age of 72 years.

Stew was an avid fisherman, horse-racing enthusiast, camper, and storyteller.

Many memories were made at the fishing pond and racetrack, as well as at the various family camping trips attended together. Stew could tell a story like no one else. His sharp memory enabled him to tell a tale from long ago as if it happened yesterday.

Above all else, he loved his family. He had an anecdote for each one of his kids and grandkids. He always made an attempt to watch the grandkids’ sports and performances, or build them a treasure.

We’ll forever hold a spot in our hearts for an amazing Husband, Dad, and Grandpa/ Papa.

November 15, 1930 ~ August 15, 2021 Rodney John May was born on November 15, 1930 to Ernest and Katie May at the family home in the Spring Lake district, southeast of Daysland. He was the third of four children. Older sisters were Gladys and Dorothy, and brother Clayton, who came 10 years after Rodney.

Early school years were at St. Leo’s School, and later in Killam.

When Rod was in his teens, the family moved to an Eshpeter quarter, where they expanded and farmed until he retired in 1988.

Rod loved to dance and, occasionally at a local dance, he would burn up the dance floor with a Rosalind girl named Mary Malone.

After dating a couple of years, they married in 1955 and to this union six children were born.

Along with farming, Rod also did custom spraying for the first few years. After the death of his father in 1958, Rod, along with his mother Katie, took on his dad’s school bus route. He bussed to Daysland until 1988, when the couple moved to Camrose.

The farm was a busy place, with cows to milk, pigs to feed and land to work.

Rod and Mary loved to go to the community socials and wedding dances, and we were always happy to have Grandma Katie babysit while they were out. (She read us stories!)

Other weekends, there would be card games with the neighbours.

These were very noisy affairs and we couldn’t sleep – so we would creep down the stairs and sit and listen to the grown-ups.

When Mom and Dad moved to Camrose, Dad set up a workshop where he made miscellaneous wood items, including an oak dresser for each grandchild. He enjoyed the odd golf game and was especially fond of playing cards and crib. There weren’t many nights that Mom and Dad didn’t have three games of crib before bed. Dad was always up for a game of cards!

Left to cherish Rod’s memory are his loving wife Mary; children Jackie (Dennis) Olsen, Pat Horton, Neil (Betty) May, Dan (Kari) May, Susan Goudreau, Lauri (Dallas) Sargeant; sister Dorothy Bussy; as well as Mary’s sisters Jean and Maureen and brother Arnold (Susan); and numerous nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles. Also left to cherish him are grandchildren Colin (Kristen) Olsen, Craig (Kaitlin) Olsen, Levi Horton, Shane (Dasha) Horton, Trevor (Angela) May, Travis (Jamie) May, Ryan May, Justin (Chelsey) May, Britny (Mack) May, Tanner (Madisyn) May, Lindsey (Gregg) Davenport, Michelle Goudreau, Megan Sargeant and Paige Sargeant. He was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren.

Rod was predeceased by his father Ernest; mother Katie; brother Clayton; sister Gladys McKinnon; and brothers-in-law Alex and John.

A Funeral Service was held at 11:00 a.m. on August 20, 2021 at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, Camrose, with Father Danial Dsouza and Deacon Doug Tien officiating.

Interment followed at Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose.

Camrose recently welcomed the Province of Alberta Associate Minister of Status for Women Whitney Issik to the community for a tour and brief visit with some owners and operators of local businesses and organizations.

“As the Associate Minister of Status of Women, I am touring the province, listening to women to inform the work of my ministry over the next year and a half,” explained Issik of the position. “I will be working to ensure women are included in every step of Alberta’s economic recovery. I will be asking my cabinet colleagues how their recovery initiatives respond to the realities women in Alberta face when trying to advance their social, educational and economic opportunities.”

Issik said that she will also be working with various ministries on other areas of concern, such as violence against women, education and child care.

On August 12, Alberta associate minister of Status of Women Whitney Issik was in Camrose visiting some local businesses and organizations. When asked how she saw women’s roles changing in the political stadium and the business world, Issik responded, “Alberta women are a force in business and the community. Not surprisingly, there are more and more women around executive tables and in council chambers. I suspect, with the critical mass of women now in decision making roles, we will see exponential growth in the already impressive number of women starting or running businesses and being elected to political office.

“Women will leverage our collective strength to make this a reality.”

Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely ensured that during Issik’s visit to Camrose on August 12, she would have an opportunity to meet and chat with some inspirational women and youth making a difference in the community.

“I am so glad that

Backpack choices

Backpacks are handy for carrying books–and lots of other things. But if they’re not used right, they can strain muscles and even cause back pain.

Backpack safety is especially important for children, who can be hurt if they regularly carry too much weight or don’t wear their backpacks safely, according to Alberta Health Services.

Look for a lightweight backpack. Materials, such as canvas or nylon, weigh less.

You want wide, padded shoulder straps and check for a waist belt. This is an important feature, because

Heie joins biathlon development team

Ava Heie of the Camrose Ski Club is the newest member of the Biathlon Alberta development team.

The 13-year-old student has been skiing for 10 years, but just started to take up biathlon last year.

Ava enjoys the shooting component that is the difference between skiing and biathlon. “I find skiing to be fun, but shooting adds a different element to it,” said Ava. “Shooting gives you the opportunity to have a rest from skiing and focus something else.

It adds a new challenge.”

The decision was based on the previous year, because the events were cancelled last season, due to COVID-19.

“It was a surprise to be named to the development team. I didn’t know where I would be compared to others, because we didn’t have events to gain results from,” added Ava. “I just kept working hard to reach a higher level. I trained by running, biking, roller skiing and regular skiing. I have to go to special training camps now. Camps are all over the province,” said Ava. “Making the team inspires me to get better.”

She has age on her side and time to improve before setting her goals. “I want to make Team Alberta in the future as my goal.”

Ava is still undecided if she will choose skiing or biathlon in which to specialize. “I like the classical and skate part of skiing, but also the shooting of biathlon. It will be a tough decision.”

It is not uncommon for people to participate in both sports for a few years before making that decision.

She credits the Camrose Ski Club for helping her make the development team this summer.

BRCF grants funds to Ronning Centre Submitted

The Battle River Community Foundation (BRCF) awarded a $3,750 grant to University of Alberta Augustana Campus.

The grant supported the Designated Speakers Fund at the University’s Chester Ronning Centre for the Study of Religion and Public Life.

“The Chester Ronning Centre is so very grateful for the support of the Battle River Community Foundation,” remarked University of Alberta Augustana Campus assistant dean, Advancement Debbie McIntosh.

“The support provided to the Distinguished Visiting Fellows Fund allowed

us to host virtual presentations and speakers such as Reverend Nontombi Naomi Tutu and Sarah Hurwitz.”

McIntosh explained that the virtual events increased registrations to include attendees from around the world. “We thank Battle River Community Foundation for making that possible.”

The grant is from income from the Phil and Doris Anderson Fund, which is a Donor Advised Fund established by Doris Anderson. A Donor Advised Fund allows the donor to recommend a grant recipient or recipients to the Foundation Board annually from income generated within the fund.

Submitted Battle River Community Foundation chairman Kevin Gurr presents the cheque to Debbie McIntosh, assistant dean, Advancement at Augustana Campus.

The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support charitable organizations in East Central Alberta, which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future.

Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principals of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations.

Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $7,250,000 to support charitable activities in the Battle River Region.

“Wow! That’s a very expensive car. What’s so bad about that?”

I’ve started telling everyone about the benefits of eating dried grapes. It’s all about raisin awareness.

Having a teenager is like having a cat that only comes out to eat and hisses if you try to pet it.
