Brent Bonter and Roxanne Forsyth have been volunteering their time and talent weekly to cook meals for those needing the assistance. CityLights Church leaders, with the help of a devoted congregation, have started a church ministry to share the love of God to our community in a fresh new way: providing free meals, as they are able, to those in the community who find themselves temporarily hungry, shut in, lonely or going through a season of need. The CityLights Meals Program involves hearty, nutritious meals prepared on site in the spacious industrial kitchen by a pair of Red Seal Chefs. The meals are frozen and stored as ready-togo meals. Church volunteers then make local deliveries to people who are unable to accept their meal in person. CityLights Church personnel also recognizes that people, even in this comfortable community, can occasionally find themselves homeless or in temporary need. A call ahead to the Church by those in such a situation will allow the volunteers to thaw and heat a meal, then provide a place in their house of worship for enjoyment of the meals that have been prepared.

City offers winter fun for everyone By Lori Larsen
Recognizing that the winter months can be long and somewhat lackluster, the City of Camrose Recreation and Culture Department is planning some fun, family events to keep residents active and engaged in the community. City of Camrose Recreation and Culture recreation program coordinator Christine McCord said the Recreation and Culture Department is constantly brainstorming ideas for new and exciting activities to engage residents and visitors to the City. “We are trying to come up with more self-directed activities that people can do,” said McCord, adding that the City will facilitate the activities with the goal of having people take part. “The City is very excited to be hosting, in partnership with the Camrose Family Resource Centre, Rose City Curling Club and the Bailey Theatre, the We Love Winter Weekend event,” said McCord. “It will take place on Family Day weekend, beginning Friday, February 18 through to Monday, February 21.” On Friday, February 18, come out and join an oldfashioned tobogganing party at Jubilee Park from 1 until 4 p.m. Dress warmly and bring the family for some ups and downs on the hill. According to McCord,

hot chocolate and cookies will be available on site. On Saturday, February 19, try your “foot” at snowshoeing at Stoney Creek Centre from 1 until 4 p.m. If snowshoeing isn’t your thing, come out and take a stroll around the Stoney Creek area and just enjoy being in the fresh air. Once again, the City will be providing hot chocolate and cookies on site. “We want to have the firepits at Stoney Creek going that day as well,” said McCord. “And we will have someone from Family Literacy reading by the campfire.” On Sunday, February 20, lace up your skates and sharpen your dance skills at a Disco Skate on Mirror Lake from 5 until 8 p.m. “We are still working through the full details, but the skate with music by the Bailey Theatre will happen for sure. There may be some sort of light shows,” hinted McCord. On Sunday, February 20, the Rose City Curling Club is offering a Family Curling event mid-morning, time to be determined. On the afternoon of Monday, February 21, there will be skating with music and hot chocolate at two of the City outdoor rinks. “As we get closer to the dates, we will be posting specific times and locations
on the City website,” noted McCord. Stay tuned for another exciting City initiative, a Best in Snow contest tentatively scheduled for March 18 to 20. Residents will once again be challenged to show their building with snow skills. “We have partnered with Wild Rose Co-op who have provided three gift cards for the winners, one for $100 and two for $50,” noted McCord. All outdoor activities may be subject to change dependent on weather conditions and are subject to guidelines and restrictions implemented by the provincial government. Anyone participating in City-planned outdoor events do so at their own risk and are reminded to physically distance and use caution and common courtesy. For complete details on the We Love Winter Weekend activities as they roll out, contact Christine McCord by email at r e cr e a t i o n @ c am r o s e .c a or by telephone at 780-672-9949. Report to the Community 2021 Message from Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital As we approach year three of the COVID-19 pandemic, the continuous strain on our staff, physicians, and community members who are accessing the health care system is apparent. We are empathetic to family members and significant others who are worried about their admitted loved ones or who face restrictions in visiting their loved ones at acute care facilities. Despite the challenges of the ongoing COVID-19 outbreaks, short-staffed shifts, and service reductions, our staff remain resilient, optimistic, and dedicated to maintain the core functions that serve the care needs of their community. Our healthcare team appreciates our community’s engagement in following public health guidelines. This year St. Mary’s Hospital launched a pilot COVID-19 recovery project to provide personalized assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation programs for rural individuals with lingering COVID-19 symptoms for more than 5 weeks. The programs are designed to meet all physical, cognitive, psychological, and social aspects of wellness, and will optimize health outcomes for the diverse care needs of all age groups. 2021 was a major milestone for St. Mary’s Hospital in that we held our first-ever Mental Health Symposium. The two-day virtual conference, sponsored by the St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose Foundation, was attended by almost 200 Alberta-wide health care workers, community partners, and members of the general public. The Symposium featured multiple guest speakers that focused on building resiliency and enhancing mental health services in our community. We look forward to providing Camrose with enhanced mental health services in 2022.
Message from the Foundation & Community Boards
HOSPITAL EXPENDITURES $41 MILLION
On behalf of the members of the Community and Foundation Boards of St. Mary's Hospital, we would like to express our deep gratitude for the commitment, dedication, and courage displayed by hospital staff, physicians and leadership teams in responding to COVID-19. Your resilience and tireless efforts have not gone unnoticed in the community. We look forward to a time where we can safely celebrate you and recognize all of your hard work! We would like to thank our donors for their generous contributions, especially during these uncertain economic times. Through your generous donations, the Boards are able to address areas of greatest need for the hospital and provide the necessary financial support to help meet those priorities. Given the ever changing needs of our hospital, we would ask and encourage those who wish to make a donation to consider designating their contribution to the "St. Mary's Hospital - General Fund" to allow for more flexible use of funds. Thank you for your help in maintaining the excellence in care our community deserves! Judith O’Shaughnessy, Foundation Board Chair & Kirstyn Rau, Community Board Chair

Mental Health Hub & Crisis Intervention
Camrose’s Mental Health Hub launched in March 2021. The Hub includes a variety of service providers in the Camrose community who focus on addressing the complex mental health needs of clients that require supportive services from multiple agencies. Patients referred to the hub include: patients who visit the St. Mary’s Hospital Emergency Department frequently, patients who are not consistent with taking their mental health medication, patients who frequently call the Camrose Police service for mental health assistance, homeless patients with mental health complications, and family concerns with housing and/or mental health concerns. The Mental Health Hub referral form is intended to service Camrose residents aged 18-65. The St. Mary’s Hospital Emergency Department is now the home of a Crisis Intervention Team and Rapid Access Clinic, assessing distressed patients as soon as they enter our facility and provide them with the necessary supports. The team includes Physicians, Nurses, and a Liaison that connects patients with their doctor, a mental health therapist, a psychiatrist, and to resources within the community.
Staff Education
The St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation Board was pleased to award 11 staff members with grants to help them pursue further health care education; programs that received grants included Registered Nursing, Licensed Practical Nursing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Power Engineering, and CT Imaging. A total of $9,460.87 was awarded to employees in 2021.

New Equipment
St. Mary’s Hospital received a variety of new equipment in 2021. The Diagnostic Imaging department received a new Patient Lift that assists staff with the transport of patients from wheelchairs to the imaging table. The patient lift allows for a safe work environment for staff and increases safety and comfort for patients. The CAMROSE BOOSTER, February 8, 2022 – Page 4
Looking with eyes of love
This week is one of my favourite issues of The Camrose Booster–the one with little Valentine messages sprinkled throughout. I read every one, smiling. So much affection. So much whimsy. So much love. It’s fun to see Valentines to or from people I cherish. But it’s an uplift simply to see all the lovers, family members, friends and co-workers sending upbeat little love messages to one another. Does something nice to see public expressions of affection. ***
Valentine’s Day reminds me of a television interview I once saw with Nobel prize winning novelist Toni Morrison. One of her best-known books is entitled (appropriately for this week) Beloved. She was talking about how we express love to children. She said that when her children were young, she really wanted to be a good mother who made sure her children were cared for. As part of that care, whenever she looked at her children, the first thing she did was check to make sure that their faces were clean, their clothes were presentable, their socks matched, and so on. One day she realized two things. First, in effect, whenever she looked at her children, in her very first glance she was looking for flaws, for something wrong. That realization made her uncomfortable. The second realization shocked her. She realized that when her children looked back at her, she was always frowning. The expression on her face looked like she thought something was wrong with them. Because of her most frequent first facial expression, they believed that she disapproved of them. On the day she had that realization, she made a resolution. From that point forward, whenever she saw her children–or anyone else–she made sure that, before she did or said anything else, she would first look at them with eyes of love. ***
On the day I saw that interview, I made a similar resolution: that, when I saw someone I care about, before I do anything else, I would look at them with eyes of love. I didn’t always remember. Some days if I was cranky, I was not even sure I wanted to remember. But I remembered often enough to have discovered something interesting. When I consciously chose to look at someone with eyes of love as soon as I saw them, something changed in me. It’s like my heart softened and I tapped into a wellspring of affection. And, I suspect, that change in me sometimes changed whatever happened next. ***
That was then and this is now. Remembering that interview and my resolution, I cannot remember when “looking with eyes of love” stopped being at the front of my mind. The habit drifted away. So here’s my experiment for the next week. (I’m not making a lifetime commitment!) I hereby resolve, in this public space, that for the next week, everyone I see–people I know and people I don’t know–before I say or do anything else, I’ll first look at them with eyes of love. Not romantic love, just that kind of “agape” love; acceptance of them as a fellow human being who, whatever else, is somebody’s child. And–on days when I feel like pushing my limits– I’m going to see if I can do that with public figures of whom I do not think highly. What would happen inside of me if, instead of looking at them with contempt or disdain, I looked at them with eyes that see each of them as a fellow human being who is somebody’s child? What if I looked at them with eyes of compassion? What if I looked at them with eyes of love? Can I do that for a week? I don’t know. But this Valentine’s Week seems like a good week to experiment. Would you like to join me in this experiment? Email me at Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com and we can compare notes about what we notice. ***
I’d love to hear from you! If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.

The news indicates that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is afraid to use the army to evict the truckers from downtown Ottawa and the Ottawa police are afraid to become involved. The question becomes, who runs this country? It is becoming obvious that it is the anti-vaxers. Therefore let us not resist. Remove all mandates and health restrictions. I have my three shots so I feel very safe. But I would still be free to wear a mask in public and I would be free to not attend public places where vaccine shots are not required. Let the anti-vaxers risk their health, but protect the healthcare system. Reserve half the healthcare system for those who are vaccinated. Perhaps, then I could get an appointment for a CT scan to see how my lung cancer is progressing. Stop overstressing the healthcare workers. Too many are being burned out, overloading the rest. The anti-vaxers should have to wait for an appointment just as I do. Those who refuse to get vaccinated when sick should ask if there is space in the care system. If not go home and hope for the best. Arnold Baker, Camrose World tension
Vaccine mandates, supply chain disruptions, inflation and spiraling world tension are all steadily on the rise. My wife and I are fully vaxed to be compliant. However, that doesn’t guarantee safety against spreading of the Omicron variant, accord-
ing to Pfizer. They notified the USA health minister that they are starting clinical trials on a new vaccine specifically targeting the highly transmissible Omicron variant, which has eluded the Pfizer current two-dose protection. Conservative MPs, Premier Jason Kenney and Scott Moe, as well as numerous experts from business and commerce have urged the Prime Minister and President Biden to seek a solution of compromise to keep these trucks moving and earning driver’s pay cheques. Justin Trudeau remains steadfast. “I won’t compromise safety.” In view of Pfizer’s admission that current two-shot vaccines are not effective against Omicron…there’s little safety being gained to sacrifice. Since the US health minister was notified, it is safe to say that the Prime Minister and the Canadian health minister were also informed and the persistent refusal to disregard the truckers’ concerns appear to have been implemented solely to punish nonvaxers. It’s time for him to heed the new science. His disdainful response has caused these protests to appear and their persistence to stay until they’re heard. He has abdicated his responsibility. Meanwhile, he exaggerates the degree of disrespect shown by protesters. (a few bad actors, thousands of respectful ones), but as he chastised them for their hateful behaviour…saying we must erase all forms of hatred and racism…while his voice was laced with venom.
He needs to examine his own conduct, that perfect idol that he sees in the mirror, is not what the rest of the world is seeing. His top-down autocratic style of governance is not Canadian. All essential workers (included truckers) deserve respect. Bill Mattinson, Camrose History repeats
The fall of the Roman Empire was preceded by several secessio plebis (withdrawal of the commoners), where protests became bitter in the mouths of many. The ordinary citizen Roman plebians would exercise power over the Patrician elitists by calling for a general strike by abandoning their shops and workshops, leaving the city and commerce would cease. This occurred many times before the empire crumbled. In view of recent history in North America (and in Europe), it is sad to see history repeating itself for the umpteenth time. Conflict is fueled by a burgeoning population (aided and abetted by social media) competing over decreasing land and diminishing resources. Is there a mechanism for taking the bitterness out of the mouths of so many? The polarization of our Canadian politicians would suggest “no”. It leads me to the sad conclusion that Homo sapiens simply do not have the capability of learning from our past (and well documented) history over the last 2,000 years. Lynn Clark, Camrose

Beauty and the Beast brings life to classic story By Murray Green
Watching the Churchmice Players’ version of the Beauty and the Beast The Broadway Musical is a great way to enjoy theatre at its best and ignore the stress of the day. Performing a Disney classic is a safe way to draw interest to local theatre. Beauty and the Beast has strength of its material to carry the show. The 1991 film on which the stage musical is based, was the first full-length
animated feature to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. It is a safe bet to be enjoyed by people of all ages. It still ranks as one of Disney’s best, funny, moving shows and it allows for several great performances in the cast. Even with the fine acting and moving lyrics, it is the costumes and set design that bring this production to life. The theatre production allows for more char-

Valentine’s Day By Arnold Malone
Socrates, an ancient Greek Philosopher (470 -399 BC), has stated that the primary motivation for people is their search for love. (For those who insist on written accuracy, I did not actually hear Socrates say that.) A time ago in the same spirit, Bertrand Russell, while being interviewed on a British media outlet, was asked, “Dr. Russell, you have three Ph.D.s – one in mathematics, one in philosophy and one in music. You have been an activist all of your life. Now, at age 95, you are organizing and participating in a demonstration against the Vietnam War. What has been your greatest search?” Russell responded, “It was the search for love.” Interviewer (sounding somewhat surprised): “Did you ever find it?” Russell: “Yes, in my fourth marriage.” Russell has also written, “Love brings ecstasy so great, I would trade the rest of my life for a few moments of it.” (Mind you, he said that just prior to the end of his life.) Love must endure through good days and bad, but Valentine’s Day is an invitation to celebrate what love offers. It is a time to express one’s love and to be grateful for having being enriched from a loving relationship. Love is one of those sensations that is realized when apparent, but it is near impossible to define. Love is demonstrated more by deeds than by words, but don’t ever get caught on the thin ice of thinking that love words don’t matter. We use the word “love” in such variety of uses that meaning has to be found in context since no definition represents the wide manner in which the word is used. We love new snow, a powder blue dress, a shaving cream, a warm day, the library, a new movie, a cell phone, a horseback ride and a splendid view. Some people even love cooked cabbage. There once was a breakfast cereal called Cream of Wheat. Some people loved it. I thought my mother was trying to kill me by telling me, “There are no lumps in it and it is good for you.” There were lumps in it. When one says, “I love my horse”, surely, surely, surely the word “love” does not mean the same as when you express, I love my special person. Love is like the wind. You can’t see it, but you can feel it. Love is an emotion that is first felt, then known. Love is important to seek and find because people long for its warm security. Sad is the life that endures 100 years and never knew love. Love is what makes life’s trip worthwhile. So, this Valentine’s Day, take the opportunity to celebrate the love you share. Voice your thanks. Let all who you love know with certainty that your shared love is secure. You will feel good when you do, and so will those who hear your feelings. Love requires kindness, respect and sharing. It is my strong belief that love is a multi-volume story, chapter upon chapter, which cannot be measured in a single moment. It grows when it endures. The love we give is the only love we keep. So today, pile high a big load of love. Happy Valentine’s Day!
acter depth than the movie ever could. That is a great thing. Camrose is blessed with a lot of skilled actors and actresses. That shines through in its shows. Belle (played by Kyra Gusdal in the version I saw) and Gaston (Chris Reinhart) were fantastic in their roles and they were well-suited to playing the leading roles. If I was handing out a Best Supporting Role award, it would have to go to Cogsworth (Desiree DeKock). She was simply brilliant and performed like a well oiled (or even tightly wound) clock. Lumiere (Br ia n Dumont), Mrs. Potts (Jane Gusdal), Chip (young Sarah Terlesky will steal your heart), LeFou (Dustin Muise) and even the Beast put in performances like they have been rehearsing
the roles for two years. All that dancing and rehearsing was done with masks on to protect the actors. The super strong cast displayed smooth performances; they all pulled the show in the right direction. I’m sure the cast doubles on alternating nights will be just as good. The magic on stage allows you to get swept away in the love story, laugh at the jokes and gets you caught up in the performances. I can’t say this enough.
The background people are the real stars of the show. The set designs and costumes take the Churchmice production to a new level. Just imagine the hours of painting and designing it took to have the perfect backdrops for the show. Upcoming Beauty and the Beast performances with evening shows are on February 9 to 12 at 7:30 p.m. A matinee will be held on February 12 at 1:30 p.m.
WEDDING PLANS
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Gaston (Chris Reinhart) and LeFou (Dustin Muise) discuss a plan to attract Belle during a scene from Beauty and the Beast at the Lougheed Centre. Meanwhile, Belle (Kyra Gusdall, upper right) is more interested in reading a good book.

Tebey ready to return to Camrose By Murray Green
Country artist Tebey is scheduled to be on the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts centre stage with his Shotgun Rider tour on February 17. “There are a ton of music fans in Alberta, so I couldn’t think of a better place to launch the tour then Camrose. I’ve been to BVJ (Big Valley Jamboree), but I didn’t get much time to spend in the city. We are actually going to arrive early this time so I can tour Camrose and check out the city,” revealed Tebey. “This tour has been a long time in the making. My team and I started planning as soon as there was a glimmer of hope that live music
was back on the horizon. That’s how anxious I am to get back in front of the fans. Being able to headline a national tour is still something I can’t believe I’m able to do. I’m very grateful to the fans who spend their hard-earned money to watch us play. The difference between BVJ and this concert is that people are going to see me, not a group of other performers. It is much more intimate and I prefer to play for smaller crowds,” explained Tebey. Nashville resident and Ontario, Canada native, Tebey is a platinum-selling artist, award-winning producer and accomplished songwriter with six number
one songs in his repertoire of hits. “I have had a lot of songs over the last two years that people haven’t heard live, so that will be exciting for me to be able to share again. This is a great opportunity to introduce some new music to country music fans,” said Tebey. His often mispronounced name (TAY-bay) is of Nigerian descent, his father’s birthplace, but Tebey grew up in the small town of Peterborough and went to high school in Burlington. While enjoying simultaneous success on the football field, he and his father made the decision to move to Nashville in his mid-teens to pursue
his music career, while his mother stayed back in Canada to care for Tebey’s brother and sister. This bold move paid off when Tebey signed to BNA Records Nashville (RCA Label Group) in 2002. “I like to mix the concert with a lot of songs people know with some new ones. I’m at the point in my career where I can almost play a full set of songs that have been played on the radio. That helps so much in playing songs that people recognize,” said Tebey. “It feels so good to be back home in Canada and to be able to play for Canadians again.” Though he’s been experiencing solid highlights for over a decade, the past three years in particular have seen some of Tebey’s biggest successes to date with three number one songs as a writer: a US Billboard number one with Justin Moore’s “Somebody else will,” a Canadian number one with Gord Bamford’s “Dive Bar” and his first number one as an artist and writer with his gold single “Who’s Gonna Love You” for which he also received a SOCAN award in March 2019. “The story behind the song ‘What Was I Drinking’ is from when we were down in Mexico with our producer trying to get a different vibe for this record. We went out for dinner and a couple of drinks one night and we all woke up the next morning just deathly ill. Our main songwriter Jim-
my Thow said to me, ‘what were we drinking’ and that is how the song came about,” explained Tebey. He also co-wrote two additional top five radio hits during this time frame, “Denim on Denim” (certified platinum) and “Good Jeans.” Overall, Tebey has four official top five radio singles, five top 10 singles, and four top 20 singles as a recording artist, and his music and videos have amassed to nearly 70 million streams. The fans and the band share a favourite song. “‘Denim on Denim’ is the song that changed the trajectory of my career. When you sit down to write songs, you don’t know what will connect with people. You do your best to write something that people can relate to. For some reason, that song is something that connected with everyone.” Tebey is currently working on a new project for 2022 titled Tulum, which is set to release later in the fall. His first single from this upcoming album is “What Was I Drinking” which is out now. The all-female band Nice Horse will open for Tebey. His band consists of Tebey Ottoh, Danick Dupelle and Jimmy Thow. Tebey has won awards as a songwriter, artist and for his work as a producer. He supports charities advocating for mental health care.

Memorandum of Understanding on sexual violence occurrences investigations By Lori Larsen
On February 2, Camrose Police Service (CPS) and the Association for Communities Against Abuse (ACAA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) launching the Camrose Violence Against Women Advocate Case Review (VACR) program intended on conducting reviews on sexual assault occurrence investigations. “This will add another layer of transparency to investigations and add to a victim-centred police and community response to sexual assault,” explained Camrose Police Service Inspector Rene Brisson. In 2019, the Camrose Police Service completed an internal evaluation of the police service’s response to allegations of sexual assault. The evaluation reviewed over 100 sexual assault investigations from 2014 to 2017. Four recommendations came as a result of the information gathered in the review, two of which included updating the Camrose Police Service’s policies and procedures based on new best practices and implementing a file review process in collaboration with trained victim advocates from a community partner. The Camrose Police Service and the Association of Communities Against Abuse (ACAA), the primary sexual assault service agency in Camrose and East Central Alberta, recently partnered in creating a Violence Against Women Advocate Case Review (VACR) program. This program is an advocate-based case review for sexual violence cases, which is a victim/survivorcentered approach towards improving the police response to sexual violence. The program recognizes that sexual violence is a shared responsibility across police, justice partners, public health, community and sexual assault support organizations. Trained advocates from ACAA will confidentially review every detail of the Police Service’s sexual vio-
lence cases seeking best practices and evidencebased, trauma-informed investigations with a focus on survivor support and investigative excellence. The following are the reported sexual assault occurrences for Camrose from 2017 to 2021 inclusively: 2017–24; 2018–37; 2019– 23; 2020–29 and 2021–12. “The VACR is not only reviewing sexual assaults, but all sexual violence occurrences, some of which are scored something other than a sexual assault (generally associated to occurrences with child victims),” explained CPS Inspector Brisson. ACAA advocates completed their case review training prior to the signing of the MOU, which outlines their commitment to the program, after which the review team immediately began conducting the review of all 2021 sexual violence cases falling within the scope of the program. This program will continue into the future, as cases will be reviewed quarterly by the advocate team, seeking to provide
timely feedback to those involved in the investigation and survivor support and treatment. Camrose is the third community in Alberta to adopt the VACR model of sexual assault case reviews. The first two were in Calgary and Edmonton. There are currently 30 municipal police services across five provinces in Canada using VACR. “I am extremely proud and excited with the commitment both of our organizations have made in further supporting survivors of sexual assault and in improving the outcomes of these difficult investigations,” remarked Inspector Brisson. “Partnering with ACAA and Sunny Marriner in this review program now implements all of the recommendations, which stemmed from our review in 2019. The feedback resulting from these reviews will look to improve not only our police response to these types of crimes, but how we can better support survivors within our community.” CPS Sergeant Jason
Schiebelbein added, “I am proud to be the service’s liaison officer for this program and feel it is an important step in ensuring the Camrose Police Service is committed to conducting trauma-informed and evidence-based investigations adhering to best practices.” Representatives from ACAA, Stephanie Hadley and Jenny Ofrim provided comment. “As the primary sexual violence-serving agency for 35 years in East Central Alberta, we are thrilled to partner with the Camrose Police Service and be supported through the nationally recognized Improving Institutional Accountability Plan (IIAP). “Giving voice to the perspectives and experiences of survivors as they navigate the criminal justice system will lead to a more trauma-informed response to reports of sexualized violence. The transparency of the Camrose Police Service highlights their commitment to systemic change, with the goal of creating a community that supports survivors. We continue to offer survivors support,
information and choice as they heal.” Marriner, project lead for the Violence Against Women Case Review in Canada, provided her expertise in the field in assisting CPS and ACAA in developing this program. “The national Improvising Institutional Accountability Project (IIAP) has worked to bring Violence Against Women Advocate Case Review (VACR) to police services across Canada for over seven years,” reported Marriner. “We’re very pleased that Camrose is the newest community to adopt this emerging best practice in sexual assault investigations. We know we can do better for survivors of sexual violence who choose to access the criminal justice system and our national group is grateful to work closely with ACAA and CPS to set them up for success.” This is the only model built and based on an advocate-led independent standard where those who work most closely with and for survivors conduct the reviews.

We all know the feeling of being cooped up inside when the weather outside is just too cold. Now imagine multiplying that feeling and adding the energy of dozens of children under the age of 11. The result is challenging, to say the least. That’s why the teachers and staff at St. Patrick Catholic School decided to embrace the winter days with what has been coined the Polar Bear Club. “The Polar Bear Club allows students the chance to still get outside for recess dressed with the appropriate clothing on days when the temperature dips below -25°C,” explained St. Patrick Catholic School principal Michelle Nanias. “It has been successful so far. We have 130 students signed up.” The goal is to bundle

door recess in cold weather provides an opportunity for students to be vigorously active and embrace the cold Alberta winters. The fresh air and time to move around helps students focus when they get back into the classroom.” Once bundled up, the students have a regular supervised recess break led only by their imagination. “There are no structured activities and students get to go out and have fun. Our school council did just buy us some winter tools, like shovels and snow molds, so students have been busy making forts and using our Parts play area.” Nanias said that St. Pat’s staff make the call if Polar Bear Club runs based on the temperature and wind chill. “Sometimes that wind can just be too

St. Patrick Catholic School students Brynlee Matthews, left, and Kaylee Herder had no problem at all taking some time out to enjoy the swings in the -20°C temperature during morning recess on February 3. As part of the brave Polar Bear Club, keeping active by swinging and running around outside kept them plenty warm.
students up so there is barely any bare skin showing and let them waddle out to the school ground to get moving, breath in some fresh air, and take in a healthy, natural dose of vitamin D. “We began the program because during the winter months, students were spending many weeks of recess inside due to our inclement weather procedures we follow at the school,” noted Nanias. “Our staff wanted to find a way to give students the opportunity to be outside on cold days safely, enjoying the fresh air and getting some of those wiggles out.” The Polar Bear Club is open to all St. Pat’s students from Kindergarten to Grade 4. “We believe regular opportunities for play and physical activity, especially outdoors, improves mood, attention, and overall wellbeing,” said Nanias. “Out-
much, even dressed properly, to get outside.” By the time the students are properly clad to brave the great outdoors and chilly temperatures, the total amount of time spent per recess is around 10 minutes or less, just enough time to clear heads, burn off some energy and rosy up some cheeks. “Students at St. Pat’s have been embracing the cold weather,” said Nanias proudly. “They are eager to get outside for Polar Bear Club. We even have students cheering when it’s a Polar Bear Club day. The smiles on the students’ faces and stories shared when the students come back in are priceless.” We could all take a lesson from the brave St. Pat’s students. Bundle up and turn a cold shoulder on the cold temperatures. A burst of fresh air and dose of sunshine could be the prescription we need to brighten our spirits.

If you have applied and received COVID-19 benefit payments from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) in 2021, this explains why you have received a T4A statement of pension, retirement, annuity or other income slips. These benefits are taxable, and the information on your T4A slip is needed when filing your income tax and benefit return. If you receive correspondence from the CRA, you should open it and take the actions requested in a timely manner. If you have questions about the correspondence you receive, you should call the telephone number provided in the letter. Additional information is also available on the benefits being reviewed. If you received benefits issued by the CRA in 2021, such as the Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB), a T4A information slip will be mailed to you by the end of February 2022. T4A information slips from the Government of Canada for COVID-19related benefits will also be provided online if you’re registered for My Account and have full access. To have full access to My Account, you need to enter the CRA security code they issued to you after completing the first step of the registration process. T4A information slips, including information for COVID-19-related benefits, are also available through the auto-fill my return service in certified tax filing software. This service automatically fills in parts of an income tax and benefit return with information that the CRA has on file. To use the
Smook enters UCP nomination By Murray Green
Kevin Smook has entered the race to be the next United Conservative Party representative in the Camrose Constituency. “We need a strong voice for rural Alberta. We need someone who works for the people and understands that you are the boss,” said Smook. “My wife Sheila and I have been living in the area for over 28 years. This is where we raised our family and launched our real estate business. All four of our children graduated from Tofield School and two of them graduated from the University of Alberta Augus-
tana Campus. I wish they continued to live in this area, but they have pursued opportunities elsewhere. I’d like to work towards creating more opportunities right here, in the Camrose Constituency, so we can retain and attract young people to the area.” His political experience includes more than eight years serving on Beaver County council. “I was elected in 2013 and acclaimed in the 2017 and 2021 municipal elections. Council also elected me as Reeve in 2014 and again in 2021. I’m also proud to have been involved with many community boards,” added Smook.
“I ran for the Alberta Party in the 2019 provincial election. And while there was a conservative connection with them, I know that the strongest conservative movement is the United Conservative Party and I feel much more aligned here. I intend to seek the nomination to become the UCP Camrose candidate in the next provincial election. I intend to roll up my sleeves and work for you and for the people of the Camrose Constituency. For more information, email kevinforcamrose@ gmail.com or call 780-9959339 or 780-672-0010.
service, you must be registered for My Account. You may notice that your T4A slip does not ref lect the income you actually received. Perhaps you repaid an amount and it is not reflected on the slip. Or maybe you didn’t make a repayment, but the income on the slip has been reduced by some amount. In either case, contact the CRA right away when you notice the suspected error. If you made a payment or payments toward your COVID-19 benefit overpayment that will appear on your T4A slip. If you received CRB, Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit (CRSB), and Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit (CRCB) overpayments in 2020 or 2021 and made a repayment toward the amount you owe, any amounts you repaid to the CRA between January 1 and December 31, 2021 should be reflected on your 2021 T4A slip. For repayments in 2021 of benefits received in 2021, only the difference will be reported in the appropriate benefit box. If you repaid Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB), CRB, CRSB, and CRCB benefits you received from the CRA in 2020 after December 31, 2020, you should receive a 2021 T4A slip by the end of February showing the amount of the repayment in Box 201. If you received your CERB from Service Canada, the amount repaid in 2021 will be reported on your 2021 T4E slip along with other EI amounts repaid. Service Canada will send you a letter showing the amount of CERB you repaid. What amount of COVID-19 benefits do you need to enter on your income tax and benefit return? You will need to enter the total amount of benefit payments you received and any tax that was withheld. The amount to report on your tax return is stated on the T4A slip (if you applied through the CRA). T4A slips from the Government of Canada for COVID-19 related benefits will also be provided to you online if you’re registered with My Account and have full access. The amount in Box 201, Repayment of COVID-19 financial assistance can be claimed as a deduction on the return for either 2021 or for the year in which the benefit was received.
Box 202, Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB); Box 203, Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit (CRSB); Box 204, Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit (CRCB); and Box 211, Canada Worker Lockdown Benefit (CWLB) need to be filled out. You should file your 2021 income tax and benefit return if you are waiting for the CRA to resolve an issue with the T4A slip you received. CRA encourages everyone to file by the deadline. This will ensure there are no interruptions to benefit or credit payments and that you avoid late-filing penalties. You can file using the information you have available to estimate the income you received and any income tax withheld from COVID-19 benefit payments. If needed, the CRA will correct the information and send you an amended or cancelled T4A slip. If you receive an amended or cancelled T4A slip, you can request changes to your return if they are required. While owing income tax can be a normal occurrence, it is important to address it more sooner than later. Income tax debt can accrue interest. If you owe money to the CRA, but cannot pay your balance when it’s due, you are still encouraged to file your income tax and benefit return on time. CR A understands that a tax debt payment could present a significant financial hardship. In that case, expanded payment arrangements could work for you. This will give you more time and flexibility to repay based on your financial situation. Also, taxpayer relief is available if you can’t meet your tax obligations because of circumstances beyond your control. The CRA may cancel or waive penalties or interest under certain conditions. CRA is aware that everyone’s tax situation is unique and may require contacting one of their agents. The individual tax enquiries line is open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time, and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time, except holidays. Students need to know how to file taxes By Murray Green
As a student, you may have many questions about taxes and might be filing an income tax and benefit return for the first time. Filing deadline for most individuals is April 30. Since April 30 falls on a Saturday, your income tax and benefit return will be considered filed on time in either of the following situations: they receive it on or before May 2 or it is postmarked on or before May 2. You have until June 15 to file your tax return if you, your spouse or common law-partner are selfemployed. The payment deadline is April 30 if you have a balance owing. If you filed your 2020 income tax and benefit return and qualified for interest relief, you have until April 30 to pay any outstanding income tax debt for the 2020 tax year. This applies to the tax owing for the 2020 tax year only, and not for any previous tax year. CRA encourages you to file your taxes on time. Doing so will ensure your benefit and credit payments are not interrupted. CRA is launching a new online learning tool to help students learn about taxes and empower them to do their taxes on their own. A notice of assessment (NOA) within two weeks of receiving your return online should be issued. Due to COVID-19 delays, the CRA may take 10 to 12 weeks to process paper returns. The
CRA will process them in the order they are received. Canadians who file online and who are signed up for direct deposit may get their refund in as little as eight business days. If you received benefits issued by the CRA in 2021, such as the Canada Recovery Benefit, a T4A information slip will be mailed to you by the end of February. T4A information slips from the Government of Canada for COVID-19-related benefits will also be provided online if you’re registered for My Account and have full access. To have full access to My Account, you need to enter the CRA security code issued to you after completing the first step of the registration process. You can use My Account to quickly change your address and direct deposit information. You can also track your refund, view your return status, make a payment, sign up for email notifications. Tuition tax credit could reduce the tax you may owe if you paid tuition fees to a post-secondary school or to an educational institution certified by the federal minister of Employment and Social Development to develop or improve skills in an occupation. You may be able to transfer your unused tuition to your spouse or common-law partner or your or your spouse or common-law partner’s parents or grandparents.
You can carry forward your current year’s unused tuition fees (that you did not transfer) to claim in a future year. You can no longer claim federal education and textbook amounts on your return. But, you may still be able to carry forward any education, and textbook amounts from previous years. If you carry forward an unused amount, you must claim it when you file your return for the first year you owe income tax. You may be able to claim this refundable credit for eligible tuition and other fees paid to an eligible educational institution in Canada for courses you took in 2021 or for fees paid to certain bodies related to an occupational, trade, or professional examination taken in 2021. You may be able to claim part of the interest you’ve paid on your student loans for post-secondary education. If you moved for school and are a student in fulltime attendance, you may be able to claim your moving expenses. You may also be able to claim the cost of moving for work. This includes a summer job or running a business. You can then deduct eligible moving expenses from the employment or self-employment income you earned at your new work location. You can claim moving expenses if you moved at least 40 kilometres closer to your work or school.

impact and created longterm life transformation for some.” Rear said the research was published in the spring of 2021 and is available for donors and the public so they can read about the difference that CWSS services make in the lives of women and their children. In February 2021, CWSS launched an innovative response to family violence by partnering with Alberta Health Services for the Domestic Abuse Response (DART) Team. “DART works with front-line healthcare workers at Emergency Centres in Camrose, Ponoka, Wetaskiwin, Daysland, Viking and Devon to ask each presenting patient whether family violence is an issue for them. Healthcare workers then call the DART Team to meet with the patient to discuss referrals and safety planning for their next steps.” Rear further explained that DART gives healthcare providers the confidence to ask about domestic violence, knowing shelter experts will follow up with their patients. Invaluable tools for CWSS clients are the Outreach services available free of charge, which are not limited to Camrose County. Staff travels east to the Saskatchewan border, south to the Stettler/ Ponoka area, west to the Leduc vicinity and north to Wainwright. “Since no one has to stay in our shelter to receive services, Outreach services extend to men suffering family abuse by providing supportive listening and information to connect them with various agencies that can best support their needs,” said Rear.
The Camrose Women’s Shelter Society (CWSS) will launch the organization’s new brand in keeping with continual growth and to better reflect the Society’s vision, “Communities where all people are free from violence and abuse on February 10.” CWSS executive director Nora-Lee Rear said CWSS has been developing a new brand for some time now. “A new property was purchased in 2020, and the Board decided a re-brand was required because the organization is growing, changing and evolving, and we need our brand to encompass everything we are doing today and going forward.” Lisa Borin Miller designed the brand, which is a symbolic purple crocus consisting of a larger middle f lower and two smaller flowers flanking its sides. “It was a true team effort with much input from CWSS talented staff and board who are so committed to their mission and work,” remarked Miller. The colour purple is associated with Family Violence Awareness Month and the crocus itself was chosen because of its rural roots as a flower of hope, strength and rebirth. “The organization serves Camrose and the rural communities surrounding Camrose, and the goal was to have a logo that reflects the rural roots the organization was born out of,” explained Rear. “A crocus is also symbolic of new birth. It is usually the first flower to bring new hope in the spring after the long dark
winter,” commented Rear, adding that it was the first f lower her grandfather would go out and look for every spring to pick and bring back to her grandmother. “They are the first hardy flower to make an appearance in the spring, often coming up through the snow, which is symbolic of persistence and the will to push through.” Also pertinent to the CWSS’s mission of being inclusive, the crocus bears distinctly different petals that fold into one another for support and strength. The middle, larger flower in the brand represents the parent, while the two smaller flowers (children) take refuge under their petals. “It is a very special flower for many communities,” said Rear, “Including medicinal purposes in Indigenous communities, who have used the flower for generations in healing poultices for pain and bleeding. “It is really a perfect fit for CWSS all around.” Crocuses also naturalize, which means they tend to spread and come back every year. Rear said this is representative of the continued growth of community support that is so important to ensuring the Women’s Shelter contin-
ues the much needed and valuable work it does for Camrose and surrounding areas. The rebranding also reflects the Camrose Women’s Shelter Society’s new mission and organizational trauma informed values consisting of: safety, transparency/trustworthiness; collaboration /mutuality; empowerment, voice and choice; peer support and mutual self-help; and cultural, historical and gender issues. As the crocus grows, so to does the Camrose Women’s Shelter Society. In addition to the continuing increase in the need for the basic services provided by CWSS, including shelter and services for women and children fleeing abuse, CWSS provides supportive counselling, referrals, safety planning and information about domestic violence through life skills groups. The services and programs offered by the Women’s Shelter, such as the 24/7 crisis line, the Outreach program, Family Support program and Onsite School program continue to see their own growth in need and usage. Rear explains some of the newer programs and services provided by CWSS, beginning with
the Second Stage Housing program. “In June 2020, CWSS acquired a new property and brought our dream one step closer to fruition. Second Stage Housing is an extended program that allows women and families the time, support, and resources to make healthy life choices, build familial bonds, and address the long-standing impacts that domestic violence has on a family. For the time being, the property will serve as a community-facing hub where the Outreach team, volunteers, and Domestic Abuse Response Team share service space.” In order to see the Second Stage Housing program through, CWSS applied for a special grant through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and the Women and Children Shelter and Transitional Housing Initiative announced in November 2021. Prior to this, CWSS joined 22 other shelters across Alberta in Project Impact and completed an in-depth evaluation, focusing our research on the intended and actual impact programs have on Outreach clients. “Using interviews and surveys, the clients told us how CWSS programs have made an

Nearing traces truck back to dealership By Murray Green
Clint Nearing of Viking owns a 1969 Ford truck that he can trace right back to the local dealership that first sold the unit. “My uncle, when he bought it, he was working in the winter time. He bought it brand new in March, took it on his pipeline job and it paid for itself in the first week,” he shared. The truck was purchased in Viking and Clint wanted to own the truck to keep it in the family. “When I drive the truck around town, some guys stop and tell me stories about when they rode in the truck with my uncle to work. The truck has a lot of family memories, so it is special to me,” added Clint. The Ford F-Series fifth generation was produced from 1967 through 1972 and was built on the same platform as the late fourth generation F-Series truck. These fifth generation trucks had sharper styling lines, a larger cab and more engine options. “I switched over to power steering and power brakes to modernize it a little. It was the old armstrong steering with a big steering wheel,” Clint laughed. Ford light-duty F-Series sales topped 500,000 units for the first time in 1969. “I can take it out on the highway and travel 60 miles an hour with it.
WORKING TRUCK
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Clint Nearing wanted to keep this 1969 Ford truck in the family, so he restored it to look like it just came off the dealership parking lot. The truck belonged to his uncle and was purchased in Viking.
The truck has a 360 motor with a four-speed manual transmission, known as the farmer four-speed, in it. The truck was made for the farm, but it does well on the highway too,” added Clint. “The truck features a
FUN FACTS
In 1969, the F-100 received a new grill design and a new 302 engine option. For 1970, many changes occurred including a completely new grill with wraparound front-turn signals. They were given side marker lights, exterior trim changes, and the Sport Custom trim level replaced the Custom Cab and Ranger XLT. Despite the work emphasis, fresh styling remained important as well. The grille was again tweaked slightly from the previous year, and several new colour options kept the F-Series looking sharp. Powertrains carried over from the 1968 model year. Standard issue was the 240 I-6 and three-speed manual, with the 300 cubic-inch big six optional. The 360 and 390 cubic-inch plants were the optional V-8s, with a four-speed manual and the Cruise-O-Matic three-speed auto rounding out the optional transmissions. All engine/transmission combinations were available throughout the F-Series line. There’s a reason why the Ford F-Series pickup became America’s favourite truck, and it came down to affordability and durability, which have been present from the beginning. The truck has changed significantly during its first 60 years, but what hasn’t changed is Ford’s focus on making an increasingly better truck.
lot of chrome, the style of the day, but it was banged up pretty bad. One time my grandfather was pulling up to fuel and he wanted to get close enough, but he clipped a cultivator and put a big gash in it. Over the years, the cows knocked some chrome off of it. Now it has all new chrome, but other than that, it is original,” shared Clint. “It is a fun truck to drive around in. It is a truck that I will keep forever. My nieces and nephews can fight over it when I’m gone, he said. Standard, Custom, or Ranger models were available for all light-duty F-Series trucks in 1969, including the F-350. You could get six and a half or eight-foot beds in Styleside or Flareside design, which continued to be offered on the F-100 and F-250, with the F-350 offering a ninefoot Flareside bed. Though pickup trucks became more car-like with each passing year, new packages for F-Series
trucks were offered in 1969 to accommodate buyers who had specific working needs. The Contractor’s Special and Farm and Ranch packages combined popular truck options and specialty features to create vehicles
ideally suited for specific duties. This resulted in new options such as lockable tool boxes or the now requisite rear-step bumper, the latter of which is still a pickup truck staple today.

Women’s Shelter launches new branding Continued from page 20
“Everyone living in our community of over 23,000 square kilometres deserves a safe, secure family space. So, CWSS does what we need to make this happen. The Outreach Team helps ensure someone can stay in their community, the emergency shelter provides confidential space for those who need to flee an unsafe home, the DART Team provides consultation for
anyone presenting at a number of hospitals in our area, and the Second Stage Housing project is going to give hope by changing lives long term.” With growth comes change. Like the crocus
that now brands CWSS, the vital work they do is blossoming. “The CWSS Board of Directors, which includes members from many communities across the region we serve, continues to sup-
port and advocate for the important, ongoing responsibility of providing alternatives to anyone experiencing domestic violence,” commented board chair Judilonne Beebe. “As we have and continue to grow and expand, this rebranding is part of that process.” For more information on the Camrose Women’s Shelter Society, visit the new website at camrosewomenshelter.org.

Ryley Bennefield, Dylan Wallace, Zach Ayotte, RJ Reed and Lane Lightning collected single markers. In the middle frame, Camrose scored three more tallies. John Walsh, Bennefield with his second, and Cody Fiala on a power play, did the damage on the scoreboard. VESELY, Frank Jr.
Grace Good Grace was born on May 8, 1934 in Lanigan, Saskatchewan, near the Guernsey/Drake area, to Walter and Nelda (Snider) Steiner. When Grace was 10 months old, her Daddy passed away and that left her Mom to raise her alone for a few years. Nelda married Addison Gingrich when Grace was 10 years old, and they completed the family with younger siblings for Grace: Wayne, Ron, Vi and Stewart. Grace attended school, first in the Waterloo School (Drake, Saskatchewan area), then went on to complete Grade 10 in Guernsey School. Grace kept herself busy babysitting and house cleaning for several of the families in the area around Guernsey. She also worked as a clerk in the Guernsey Store, where she eventually met Edgar Good. Grace and Edgar were married on June 10, 1964 and moved to his farm near Acadia Valley, Alberta. To this union was born four children: Sharon (1966), Ross (1967), Cameron (1969) and Neil (1971). Grace was the typical farm wife of the late ’60s, and ’70s – cooking, cleaning, rearing children, teaching Sunday School, being a part of the Home and School Board and generally keeping everything together. In 1982, the family moved from Acadia Valley to Ryley and there, Grace, again, was the stay-at-home mom, always available for her husband, children, extended family and friends. In 1986, Grace found herself working in a store again, managing The Good Store while trying to keep her children busy and off the streets. In 1996, Grace fully retired from The Good Store and trying to raise her four rowdy children. Living in Ryley, Grace was never Mrs. Good, but everyone’s “Mom Good”, “Gramma Good” and the “Candystore Lady”. In 2007, Grace and Edgar moved to Tofield and very shortly thereafter, Edgar became in need of additional care due to his Parkinson’s. He was moved to a care home in Camrose, and in 2010, Grace followed to be closer to him, visiting him multiple times a day until he passed in 2014. Grace continued to reside in Camrose, where she was visited by her family, found a home church, enjoyed Tim Horton’s regularly, honed her diamondpainting and puzzle skills, and made many friends, settling into senior life. Grace departed this earth for her new home with her Savior and Lord on January 30, 2022. She will always be remembered for her unwavering faith, her continual prayers for her family, friends and acquaintances, and her immense love for the people in her life. Grace will be missed by all who knew and loved her: her children Sharon (Dave) Reum, Raelene, Weston (Kolly), Montana, Wyatt (Payton); Ross (Kyle), Shyla (Rob), Crystal, Desirae, Bryce (Jasmine), Austin (Heidi), Ryan; Cam (Trena), Jed, Bret, Decon; Neil (Susan), Stephan, Caleb, Matthew, Andrew; her siblings Wayne (Judie), Ronald (Karen), Viola (Ortwin) Rupp, Stewart (Karen); sister-in-Law Viola Roth; as well as numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. A private family service will be held.
October 23, 1935 ~ February 1, 2022 Frank Vesely Jr. of Wetaskiwin Alberta, passed away peacefully at his home in the Sagebrush Community of natural causes on February 1, 2022 at the age of 86. He is survived by his wife Berty-Lynn Vesely of Camrose; his older sister Mary Lyle of Wetaskiwin; his sons Curtis Vesely of Gwynne, Dwayne (Bernie) Vesely of Perth, Australia, and Douglas (Deb) Vesely of Red Deer; stepdaughters Shelley Stroyan of Rimbey, and Shawna Fortier of Beaumont; and brothers-in-law Rod (Cheryl) Randen of Sherwood Park and Terry Stanvik of Camrose. Frank also leaves to mourn his grandchildren Samuel Vesely, Allison Vesely, Maxwell Vesely and Sarah Stroyan; three great-grandchildren Hunter, Wednesday and Jayda Stroyan; many nephews, nieces, and cousins; as well as extended family in the Czech Republic. Frank was predeceased by his first wife Ruby Vesely; his parents Frank Sr. and Heda Vesely; brothers-in-law Derryl Nelson and Reg Lyle; sister-in-law Isabel Dumkee; granddaughter Jenna-Lynn Stroyan; and son-in-law Rick Stroyan. Frank was born in south-central Alberta and moved to Gwynne, Alberta, with his family at an early age. He spent a lifetime working and expanding the large family farm, which he viewed as his most outstanding accomplishment. He married his first wife Ruby (Nelson) on March 24, 1962 in a double ceremony with her twin sister Isabel and his lifelong friend, Norman Dumkee. Ruby and Frank had three sons during their 23-year marriage; however, life became more difficult when Ruby was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and passed away in 1985. Frank married Berty-Lynn (Vandenbrink) on July 16, 1988, and together they enjoyed dancing, fishing, cards and were able to enjoy some travelling, including a trip to Australia to see his son, and trips to the Czech Republic to reconnect with extended family, and to Ireland to attend his son’s wedding. As a staple in the community, he would attend many community events, socials and dances, and he loved playing softball with his neighbours. He was an excellent dancer, and lover of fishing, camping, playing/winning at crib, and watching sports and hunting shows. However, Frank’s greatest joy was his grandchildren. He loved to tease them and spend time playing cards, watching them play sports or perform their music. Frank was generally a man of few words, but he will be remembered by many for his sense of humour and love of a good joke. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Lending Cupboard in Camrose or to the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Baker Funeral Chapel, Wetaskiwin, and the celebration of Frank’s life will be held on February 22, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at the Wetaskiwin Senior Centre (5216-54 Street). Vonnie Ann Hauser October 1, 1930 ~ January 31, 2022 Yvonne Ann Hauser (Vonnie) was born on October 1, 1930 to Mike and Rose Zwack in Provost, AB. At a young age, Vonnie and her family moved to a farm near Daysland, AB. She grew up there, loving the farm, the animals and the daily chores. Days were spent with her siblings Roger, Carol, and Allan, along with many other relatives and friends. She attended grade school at Chirbury, northwest of Daysland, followed by Daysland High School and then Vermilion College. She regarded her college days as some of the best times of her life, making lifelong friends and endless memories. Vonnie worked at The Club Café and Daysland Café for 50 cents an hour, and later at the Daysland Hospital. It was at the hospital she met a handsome young fellow by the name of Gerald Hauser. They married in 1950 and settled in Rosalind, AB. They had five children Brenda, Doug, Gord, Ron and Harv. They lived in a small house until 1964, when they moved a larger two-storey home. In 1969, Gerald and Vonnie became business owners of Hauser Construction Ltd. Vonnie was a busy mother, and did all the books for the business. She was also very active with the Catholic Church in Rosalind. She organized events, taught catechism and helped prepare for weekly services for many years. She treasured being a member of the CWL for over 50 years. She was a longtime Village Councillor, Royal Purple and Good Sam member. She was an expert seamstress and volunteered for over 35 years with the local 4-H club. She loved her boisterous family get-togethers and never passed up a game of cards. She had a passion for travelling and visited countries all over the world. Later in life, she enjoyed camping and exploring Alberta in her motorhome. In December 2016, with some hesitation, she decided to try moving to Camrose into Deer Meadows Retirement Home. She told her family she would still come back to Rosalind two nights a week. That maybe occurred for the first week, but she quickly fell in love with her new home. She enjoyed time spent with old friends from the Rosalind area, and made many new ones while playing cards and enjoying the great food. Unfortunately, when COVID came, Vonnie was confined to her room for a great amount of time. This proved to be very hard on her body and eventually she needed more help. In June 2021, Seasons Retirement Community in Camrose became her home. Right up to her last days, she remained sharp, astute and attuned to the happenings of the world and people in her life. She loved to share stories from days gone by and talk on the phone with family and friends. Her body simply grew tired and she peacefully went to be with the Lord at the age of 91 on January 31, 2022. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Left to cherish her memory are her sons Gord (Susan) Hauser of Rosalind, Ron (Peggy) Hauser of Camrose, and Harv (Terry Lynn) Hauser of Rosalind; ten grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; siblings Roger (Joyce) Zwack of Calgary, Carol Waldorf of Camrose, and Allan (Debbie) Zwack of Camrose; and numerous nieces and nephews. Vonnie was predeceased by her husband Gerry; daughter Brenda Fankhanel; son Doug Hauser; grandsons Mathew Hauser and Michael Fankhanel; granddaughter Nicole Arnott; and parents Michael and Rose Zwack. Due to Alberta Heath restrictions, a private funeral mass was held. A recording of the funeral mass will be made available on the St. Francis Xavier website: https://stfxcamrose.caedm.ca. Daryl Toles It is with heavy hearts, and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Daryl Toles of Camrose, Alberta on January 29, 2022, at the age of 66 years. Daryl was born on August 24, 1955, in Quill Lake, Saskatchewan; growing up in Saskatchewan provided the foundation for his enduring love of the Prairies. As a young man, Daryl moved to Alberta, where he met the love of his life, Debbie. The two settled in Tofield shortly after their marriage and raised two children; his family was his greatest pride and joy. Following Daryl’s retirement, he and Debbie embarked on multiple journeys south, which enabled him to fulfill his passion for watching MLB Spring Training while relaxing in the warm weather. Daryl was known for being an incredibly social and kind man, who formed countless strong friendships on both sides of the border. Daryl will be lovingly remembered by his wife Debbie; children Bryan (LeAnna) and Trina; grandchildren Myah, Cohan, Adia and Ila; siblings Greg (Carol), Brent, and Cheryl (Stuart); and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Gordon and Ingrid. A celebration of Daryl’s life will take place in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Camrose KidSport or the St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation Palliative Care Fund.

Augustana celebrates Black History Month
February is Black History Month and the University of Alberta is preparing to welcome up to 11 tenure-track black scholars spanning a range of academic disciplines to be hired across the University’s faculties, including Augustana. Given the current hiring freeze, this is remarkable–and necessary and timely. As president Bill Flanagan has noted, this cohort D. Tryphonopoulos, hiring, “will help to make an Dean, immediate and substantive University of Alberta Augustana Campus contribution to advancing black academic excellence at the U of A.” Exactly right! Augustana is participating in this important initiative, having advertised for a black scholar with a specialization in critical race theory with the goal of having our new colleague join us on July 1. In addition, as part of this year’s Black History Month celebrations, Augustana is hosting a Distinguished Lecture by Dr. Afua Cooper from Dalhousie University, who is one of Canada’s leading advocates of Black Studies research and education. Dr. Cooper is a multidisciplinary scholar, author, artist, and social and cultural commentator. Her expertise includes, but is not limited to, African Canadian culture, black women’s history, gender, slavery, abolition, black literatures and education. Her 13 books range across such genres as history, poetry, fiction, and children’s literature. Her fascinating and ground-breaking research on slavery and black history has made her one of the leading figures in African Canadian studies and an authority on Canadian slavery. Her book on Canadian slavery, The Hanging of Angelique: The Untold Story of Slavery in Canada and the Burning of Old Montreal, broke new ground in the study of Canadian and Atlantic slavery. Dr. Cooper led the “Universities Studying Slavery” initiative at Dalhousie University and was the lead author of the subsequent report entitled Lord Dalhousie’s History on Slavery and Race. These initiatives revealed the connections between the Canadian academy and the Atlantic slaving systems. In 2021, Dr. Cooper was appointed as the Canadian representative on UNESCO’s International Scientific Committee Slave Route Project, whose main objectives is to conduct research on the Transatlantic slavery system and its legacies. A celebrated poet, Dr. Cooper was awarded the 2020 Portia White Prize, Nova Scotia’s highest recognition for the arts. She is also the winner of the J.M. Abraham Atlantic Poetry Award for her poetry book Black Matters. She currently teaches in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Dalhousie University, where she holds a prestigious Killam Research Chair. I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Cooper at Brandon University as her host for the 2017 Black Canadian Studies Association (BCSA) Conference on “Blackness, Indigeneity, Colonialism, and Confederation: 21st Century Perspectives”, which I organized as the dean of the Faculty of Arts. At that point, Dr. Cooper, as BCSA chair, and other presenters taught me a lot about tolerance and diversity. They also taught me that forgetting about disastrous policies of the past is not an option, especially given that such policies continue to have repercussions to this day. As well, Dr. Cooper also gave a poetry reading during the conference, which I’ll always remember as one of the most moving and inspiring experiences I’ve ever had. She has a powerful, passionate voice and a wonderful sense of rhythm and timing. On February 16, the Chester Ronning Centre, in partnership with Augustana Campus and the Faculty of Arts, will present “The Power of the Pen: The Petitions of Thomas Peters and the Quest for Black Rights in Canada and the Atlantic World”. Dr. Cooper will address the use of the petition as an advocacy tool for social, racial, and political change, the early black power activism of Thomas Peters, colonial duplicity and racism, and the unending quest for dignity by black people. The presentation shall also touch on the formation of a black Atlantic identity through literacy. I invite everyone to attend Dr. Cooper’s presentation, which promises to be an unforgettable and utterly rewarding experience.

Fridge Clippings
from years gone by
Seventeen years ago, the Janes family made a major move from Newfoundland to Camrose. Their relocation involved the purchase of a home on 54 Avenue, a home they chose to renovate. During the home’s significant update, they discovered this vintage Booster. Though yellowed and brittle, the April 5, 1960 edition was still intact. It provided both insight about the community to the Janes family, and also considerable enjoyment. As a special memory of their settling in to a new community, it remains a keepsake to this day.
VALENTINE’S DAY EDITION
Thanks to Maureen Janes for sharing this Fridge Clippings story. Show us what you’ve clipped from The Camrose Booster! If we publish your entry, you will win $10, too. The oldest entry submitted prior to the end of December 2022 will earn the sender a cool $100 gift certificate from any Camrose business of that person’s choosing.

Central Agencies Home of the Week
Family home with large shop
Wally Wrubleski By Lori Larsen
Are you in need of a good-sized shop to set up your business or work on vehicles? If so, this wonderful fourbedroom family home is perfect. Located in a well-established quiet neighbourhood, this home is completely finished so there is plenty of room for the growing family. Relax in the living room in front of the large bayed window and take in the great outdoors. Move into the dining area that is big enough to accommodate extended family during special occasions. The kitchen has plenty of cabinets for storage and counter space for meal preparation. At the end of the day, the family can retreat to the upper level. A goodsized homeowner’s bedroom has its own en suite. Two more bedrooms and
a four-piece main bathroom are great for the rest of the family. The lower level has a large family room where you can enjoy movie night, and another playroom area that younger children can claim as their own. Another bedroom and four-piece bathroom would be perfect for an older child. A spare room could be used for your home office or exercise room. Now let’s talk shop. The 26’ x 36’ heated garage has 12-foot ceilings and plenty of room in which to park your vehicle. Use the space for a business, hobby or just tinkering on home projects. Located at 6305-39 Avenue, this home is priced at $329,000, allowing wiggle room to put in your own touches. Join Wally Wrubleski for an open house on Thursday, February 10 from 3:30 until 5:30 p.m. Or for a personal viewing, contact Wally at: Central Agencies Realty 4870-51 Street, Camrose 780-672-4495 Cell 780-781-7323
I’m not sure what my husband has planned for Valentine’s Day, but I sure hope it involves him taking the kids somewhere and leaving me home alone. If moms made candy conversation hearts, they’d say: • “Shut the door” • “Let me just finish my coffee” • “It’s wherever you left it” • “I said get your shoes on” • “You’re not hungry, you’re bored” • “I saw that” What did the Norsemen Inn chef give to his wife on Valentine’s Day? A hug and a quiche. Today may be Single’s Awareness Day, but chin up! Tomorrow is half-price candy day! Valentine’s Day used to be all diamonds, roses and romance. Now I’m like, if you really love me, let me sleep in and then tell me how pretty I look in my new yoga pants and messy bun. Nothing is more nerve wracking than agreeing with your wife to not do Valentine’s gifts. I can’t wait for the day after Valentine’s Day because chocolate goes on sale and that’s the kind of positivity I need in my life. At least someone loves me and fights for me. Love you, my white blood cells! A research grant by the NDP government in the amount of $5 million has proven that skunks celebrate Valentine’s Day. In fact, they’re very scent-imental. Man: “Honey, on this Valentine’s Day, I want to tell you something … I’m not rich like Jack. I don’t have a Porsche like Martin. But I love you and want to marry you.” Woman: “Oh dear, I love you too! But what was that you said about Martin?” I once fell in love with someone who only knew four vowels. They didn’t know I existed. What did the scientist say to her valentine? “I think of you periodically.” What’s the difference between $20 steak and a $55 steak? February 14. Knock knock. Who’s there? Howard. Howard who? Howard you like a big kiss? Dear Men: “I don’t want anything for Valentine’s Day” is the same as “I’m fine.” You’re welcome. A boyfriend asks his girlfriend, “What gift would you like to receive on Valentine’s Day?” “Well, I don’t know…” she replies shyly. He says, “Okay, well then I’ll give you another year to think about it!” What do you call someone with COVID on Valentine’s Day? Lovesick. For Valentine’s Day, I got a new car for my wife. I thought that was an awesome trade. A guy walks into a post office one day to see a middle-aged, balding man standing at the counter methodically placing “Love” stamps on bright pink envelopes with hearts all over them. He then takes out a perfume bottle and starts spraying scent all over them. His curiosity getting the better of him, he goes up to the balding man and asks him what he is doing. The man says, “I’m sending out 1,000 Valentine cards signed, ‘Guess who?’” “But why?” asks the man. “I’m a divorce lawyer,” the man replies. My milk expires next Monday. That means my milk has a date on Valentines Day, and I still don’t. I used to open so many cards on Valentines Day. Eventually the post office fired me for it. I bought my girlfriend a fridge for Valentine’s Day – a bit of an unconventional present, I know! But you should have seen her face light up when she opened it. My missus asked me if I’d planned something special for Valentine’s Day. “I’m working on it,” I said. She smiled happily, which is weird, because I thought she’d be cheesed off because I have to work.
