From thought to pen (or keyboard) to paper, so many writers create works of art through the spoken word and when creative individuals get together, the collaboration and networking leads to even bigger results.
Join the Battle River Writing Centre (BRWC) on April 9 at 7 p.m. at the Fox & Fable Book & Game Café for a casual gathering of readings, discussion and to hear a sampling of the group’s works.
Drawing from inspiration from the Battle River region, the BRWC, formed in 2012, consists of a group of individual writers who have showcased this special part of our province over the last decade.
“At that time, a group of aspiring writers realized that taken together as a region, the well-published authors of our region were as numerous, prolific and noted as for as any other part of Canada,” said BRWC co-founder Jane Ross.
The group meets every third Friday afternoon in what has come to be known as the Writing Room located at Story’s Way, a quaint setting tucked amidst mature trees and alongside a creative inspiring creek just outside of Camrose.
In 2016, the group published Beauty Everyday: Stories from Life as It Happens, a collection of place-based stories that explore adversity and adventure. Publication of this work was supported by the Prairie Roots Endowment Fund, University of Alberta, Service Canada, and the Battle River Community Foundation.
In 2019, they followed up with Poems from Life as It Happens, an anthology which was dedicated to the people of the region and to Lois E. Mitchell, then Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. Publication was made possible with support from the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards, Samson Cree Nation and many private contributions.
In late 2019, member Cathie Bartlett saw her first novel Destination Prairie published by Bayeux Arts of Calgary and supported by Canada Council. The novel is the first part of a trilogy with sequels well underway. “I am indebted to my fellow writers in the group for their encouragement,” said Bartlett.
In 2021, Arts that flow as stories from our landscape: Alberta. Places that Matter Series No. 1 was released. This anthology emerged from an invitation by Alberta Historic Resources Foundation for Battle River writers to respond to visual arts commissioned by Alberta Culture and is dedicated to, Salma Lakhani, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta and Dr. Zaheer Lakhani, and all who love Alberta.
BRWC writer Lori Feldberg has also published numerous family friendly books, including a farm humour trilogy and a Hercules and Big Bertha mystery series, featuring a dog detective.
Along with the many accomplishments of the group’s writers, BRWC has presented readings from their works across the region.
