Camrose Seniors Coalition has been pulling out all the stops working with Camrose County, City of Camrose and the Provincial Government in order to fund and implement a compelling roster of fun and educational activities for this community's expansive senior population.

Seniors’ Week has been proclaimed for June 6 to 10.

Brian Dumont will be singing up a storm, interesting workshops will be presented, wellness bags will be handed out, there will be a unique opportunity to tour Bethany Group's 100-year-old Heritage building and the Mirror Lake Express train will also be operational during the week. One of the most anticipated opportunities will be the annual Service Options for Seniors Scavenger Hunt. As shown above, seniors will be riding the Camrose Community Bus for free as they search the City in an effort to win a Scavenger Hunt prize. See page 9 for more information.

Foreign ambassadors visit Camrose By Murray Green

Two foreign ambassadors wanted to see more of Canada than just Ottawa. MP Damien Kurek hosted a group of officials that included ambassadors from Thailand and Romania. The ambassadors toured the area with stops at Meridian Manufacturing in Camrose. They toured a local farm operation (the Hilgartner farm) and then went to the Canadian Energy Museum (formerly Leduc #1 Energy Discovery Centre) before they headed back to the airport. “I am very impressed with the technical advances and the willingness of the business climate in Alberta and in this area,”

said Ambassador Bogdan Manoiu of Romania. He pointed out that Boian, a community in Alberta north of Edmonton, still follows the culture of Romania and is the oldest Romanian settlement in Canada. The first settlers to Alberta from Boian, Bucovina came in early 1898. They were Ichim Yurko and Elie Ravliuk. They settled in an area in Alberta that they named Boian after their hometown in Bucovina. From 2011 to 2014, Ambassador Manoiu served as presidential adviser for European Affairs, and from 2009 to 2011, he served as head of the government’s Department of European Affairs, ranking minister.

For a period of about three months, in the latter part of 2011, he served as Secretary of State in the Ministry of European Affairs. In the Presidential Administration, he served as State Adviser for European Affairs from February 2009 until his appointment as head of the government’s Department of European Affairs (Embassy of Romania to Canada). Kallayana Vipattipumiprates, Ambassador of Royal Thai Embassy to Canada, also works in Ottawa. Glenn Friesen hosted the tour of Meridian and D’Arcy Hilgartner directed the tour for their family farm.

The CAMROSE BOOSTER, May 31, 2022 – Page 4

The original Jaywalkers’ Jamboree Sixty-five years ago, in 1957, was the first Jaywalkers’ Jamboree in Camrose. It was such a radical idea. Close off Main Street. Bring merchandise outdoors. Whaaat? The context was the Chamber of Commerce’s goal to promote local businesses. One of the Chamber committees wanted to try something new, something more interesting that hadn’t already been done. My dad (also known as Booster Bill) was on that committee. At that time, Camrose was much smaller. Downtown was the major retail centre. The “west end” pretty much ended in the block in which the Church of God is now located. Grand Drive didn’t exist. The “east end” didn’t go much past Sifton School. “Local businesses” were fewer and more contained geographically. The idea came from something someone had heard about in stories or movies–the idea of an outdoor “bazaar” where merchants laid out their wares and prospective customers milled around, wandering from merchant to merchant. It’s not like anyone in Camrose (at least nobody we knew) had ever actually experienced an outdoor bazaar. The concept was pure fantasy. Part One for the committee–the fun part–was getting the idea. Part Two–a tougher challenge–was convincing other people to go along with the idea. The Chamber of Commerce had to agree to try the committee’s proposal. Merchants had to agree to the ridiculous idea of putting some of their merchandise outside–the hassle and the risks were not small. The City of Camrose had to agree to close off Main Street– creating lots of extra work for lots of people. Part Three–having convinced enough people to try the idea–was actually doing it. With zero experience by anybody, the first Jaywalkers’ Jamboree unfolded. It was a big gamble. I remember being excited on that first weekend of June, walking through downtown and being amazed by tables and racks of merchandise out on the sidewalks, and people walking around where cars usually travelled. I also remember my dad wearing what he thought was the outfit of a Middle East merchant–harem pants, a loose and puffy-sleeved shirt and a fez on his head. When Booster Bill committed to an idea, he was all in! As a teenager, I was proud of my dad for being an original thinker, and at the same time embarrassed that he was so conspicuously different! (All these decades later, I believe those emotions are still common among young teenagers.) I didn’t know it at the time, but I was witnessing the process that sums up all new developments: • Conception–somebody getting a new idea. • Convincing–getting other people to go along with the idea. • Agreement–getting enough agreement to move to the next step. • Planning–figuring out what’s needed and what has to be done to carry out the idea. • Executing–both meanings: carrying out the idea and/or killing it! • Assessing–noticing what worked and what didn’t. • Deciding what’s next–try it again or not? What to keep, what to change, what to chuck? Other Alberta communities have now experimented with their own version of a Jaywalkers’ Jamboree. That too is a stage of the process–when the idea is copied and adapted for other locations or circumstances. I’m grateful to creative people who get new ideas. I’m grateful to gutsy people who are willing to share ideas with other (usually skeptical) people. I’m grateful to brave people who are willing to try something new with no guarantee that resources will be there, or that the idea will work. Seeing what Jaywalkers’ Jamboree has become is thrilling to me. I think the originators would be pleased. And I haven’t forgotten that on the Saturday afternoon of my dad’s funeral in 1991, Jaywalkers’ Jamboree was in full swing and that seemed very fitting to me. One more thing: As a female adult remembering the original Jaywalkers’ Jamboree, it’s not the first time I’ve noticed that conception is more fun than delivery! ***

I’d love to hear from you. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send an email to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.

June is Stroke Awareness Month By Murray Green

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts or is blocked. Without blood and the oxygen it carries, part of the brain starts to die. The part of the body controlled by the damaged area of the brain can’t work properly, according to Alberta Health Services. Brain damage can begin within minutes. That’s why it’s so important to know the symptoms of stroke and to act fast. Quick treatment can help limit damage to the brain and increase the chance of a full recovery. Symptoms of a stroke happen quickly. A stroke may cause sudden numbness, tingling, weakness, or loss of movement in your face, arm, or leg, especially on only one side of your body; sudden vision changes; sudden trouble speaking; sudden confusion or trouble understanding simple statements; sudden problems with walking or balance; a sudden, severe headache that is different from past headaches. If you have any of these symptoms, even if they go away quickly, call 911 or other emergency services right away. A stroke can’t be self-managed at home. To learn more, check

the website www.ahs.ca/ heartandstroke. The acronym FAST is a simple way to remember the main symptoms of stroke. Recognizing these symptoms helps you know when to call for medical help. FAST stands for: • Face–Is it drooping? • Arms–Can you raise both? • Speech–Is it slurred or jumbled? • Time–Call 911 immediately. After you have had a stroke, you are at risk for having another one. But you can make some important lifestyle changes that can reduce your risk of stroke and improve your overall health. Treat any health problems you have. Manage high blood pressure or high cholesterol by working with your doctor. Manage diabetes. Keep your blood sugar levels within a target range. If your doctor recommends taking aspirin or a blood thinner, take it. Take your medicine exactly as prescribed. Call your doctor if you think you are a problem with your medicine. Get the influenza (flu) vaccine every year. Adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Art exhibit showcases local artists By Lori Larsen

The world of art is being brought to Camrose again. Talent and mastery of artists can be appreciated at the current art exhibit being displayed at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre now until June 24. This exhibit is the second installment this year, with future plans of a continual offering of exhibits showcasing the works of many local and guest artists. This particular exhibit features three artists, Margi Matkea, Ilona Fossen and Cathy Matkea. Feature artist Margi Matkea, currently from Daysland, began her journey as an artist in 2002/03 when her childhood interest in drawing and painting was rekindled and she was able to find more free time after raising a family and a long-time career. She spent six months of solitary dabbling in watercolour then decided to expand her horizons to include oils and experiment in other mediums through a Stratford Career Institute Art Course. She continued her passion to improve her skills by learning other tech-

niques through art books, workshops and classes. As a result of participating in Edmonton, Stettler, Red Deer, Lacombe, Sedgewick and Daysland Art Shows and Art Walks across Central Alberta, as well as the Coronation Fair for 19 years, she was able to display in a Stettler and Donalda Art Gallery, and a variety of local venues, libraries, at a music jam, hospital, restaurants, and a number of Alberta homes, as well as places far away as Saskatchewan, United States and Africa. Margi’s work includes landscape, portrait, animals and rustic old buildings done in realistic, impressionist or abstract styles. In all her work her goal is to move the observer with a bit of nostalgia or emotion. Feature artist Ilona Fossen discovered painting well into her retirement years after attending a paint night. “I was hooked and bought many paints, brushes and canvases the next day,” noted Ilona. That was seven years ago, and she continues to paint almost every day. She recently moved to Sherwood Park and looks forward to becoming actively

participating in the art world there while continuing to stay involved in her hometown of Camrose’s art scene as well. “I enjoy acrylics, but I do use oil and watercolour as well. Teaching classes in the acrylic pour medium has brought many new people into my life from whom I have learned as much as I have taught.” Ilona watches hours of videos and continues to take art classes in order to continue her growth as an artist. “I am thankful art entered my world because I could not imagine my life without painting.” Feature artist Cathy Matkea finds joy in everyday moments of life which she shares through her realistic, soft-edged paintings. Unfortunately, an illness resulted in her world shrinking to the confines of her bed and house for many years. She was, however, able to fulfill her childhood dream of becoming an artist, with 10 years of instruction from Wetaskiwin artist Carol Chapman. Cathy’s paintings often reflect a story of hope and joy amidst challenging life circumstances. She invites you to pause, breath deep-

Q

Some of my older relatives have .hearing aids, or are beginning to lose their hearing. I’m worried about how my life will change when I’m their age and if I might begin to lose my hearing as well. Is there anything I can do?

A

Much like any change in our lifestyles, smaller changes are harder to get used to than larger ones. That’s why when hearing loss occurs due to aging, it happens very gradually, and we “get used to” the small changes. When hearing loss with aging is to be expected, I would recommend that regular hearing tests be done to screen for the hearing loss, but also to monitor it. Sometimes, although someone may have hearing loss, it’s not enough loss to consider hearing aids yet. If you have a mild hearing loss, then you would hear only a mild benefit to having hearing aids. When you no longer live your life the way you want, with the hearing you have, then it may be time for a hearing test or hearing aid trial.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster City of Camrose Greenspace and Wildlife Stewardship coordinator Rhyleigh Henault is excited to be bringing back a line-up of events for the summer program.

“As a part of my position as the Greenspace and Wildlife Stewardship Coordinator, it is so enriching to be able to share these passions with the community and contribute to the conservation of the purple martins.” Henault outlined some of the programs and events already in the planning for this season, including the popular Purple Martin Festival. On June 18, the Purple Martin Festival returns to Stoney Creek Centre and surrounding area from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Dr. Glen Hvenegaard will present “Stewardship for Purple Martin Conservation: What Works and What Doesn’t?” and Sara Pearce-Meijerink, head biologist, will present “Beaverhill Bird Observatory–Alberta’s Oldest Bird Research Station”. “Along with these amazing presentations, we will also have purple martin care demonstrations, question and answer sessions and workshops for both purple martin beginners and experts,” noted Henault.

way for the Thursday evening (usually beginning at 7 p.m.) presentation lineup which will be returning to in-person format throughout June and July. “The presentations are generally an hour to an hour-and-a-half long and will be focusing on many different nature, wildlife and sustainability topics. Coffee and donuts will be available for attendees and prize draws are often done at the end of the presentations.” Nearing the end of the summer, Henault will be researching the possibility of getting Camrose to be a designated “Bird-Friendly City”. “This will involve evaluating our naturalization plan and looking into a possible bee box pilot project.” For more information on the City of Camrose Greenspace and Wildlife Stewardship, visit the City of Camrose website at www.camrose.ca/en/ recreation- and-leisure/ wildlife-and-greenspacestewardship.aspx, or contact the Greenspace and Wildlife Stewardship coordinator at 780.672.0544.

Olson repairs his former parts truck By Murray Green

Gordon Olson owns a 1952 Chevrolet truck. “I’ve had this truck since I was 17 years old. I actually bought it as a parts truck for another truck. I had it sitting out on the hill, and then one day I decided I should do something with it,” shared Gordon. “I found a different cab for the truck because this one didn’t have the fivewindow cab that I wanted. I tore the truck totally apart and started with a 1986 Chevy front end and frame. I have a 350 engine with a turbo transmission,” he explained. “It has 1983 running gear pretty much all of the way through. I welded the frame and pretty much did all of the body work. It handles beautifully on the highway. It has power disc brakes, power steering and all those kind of goodies to make it a smooth driving truck. I added air conditioning to make it quite comfortable to drive,” added Gordon. “I had a 1951 Chevrolet truck that drove, but I blew the transmission out of it. That is the main reason I bought this truck, for the transmission. I still have that truck, but it is sitting in the bush right now. The trucks traded spots. The 1951 was my first vehicle and I drove it when I was

FUN FACTS

From 1947 until 1955, Chevrolet trucks were number one in sales in the United States, with rebranded versions sold at GMC locations. While General Motors used the front end sheet metal, and to a slightly lesser extent the cab, on all of its trucks except for the cab overs. There are three main sizes of this truck: the half-, three-quarter- and full-ton capacities in short and long wheelbase. In 1952, outer door handles became push-button type as opposed to the previous turn-down style. The speedometer read to 90 mph and the dashboard trim was painted instead of chrome. Mid-year, Chevrolet stopped using the 3100-6400 designation on the hood and changed to maroon window and wiper knobs. New serial number codes were KP (half ton), KR (threequarter ton) and KS (one ton). The 1951 models had doors with vent windows. A mid-year change was made to change from a nine-board bed to eight boards per bed. It was the last year for 80 mph speedometer, chrome window handle knobs and the chrome wiper knob. The 1952 Chevy trucks featured a Thriftmaster 216.5-cubic inch or a Loadmaster 235.5-cubic inch inline six-cylinder valve-in-head engine. It generated 90 horsepower at 3,400 rpm. The 235.5-cubic inch engine developed 105 horsepower.

truck and got it roadworthy again in 2007. This vehicle will be a keeper for Gordon. “This truck will not be hauling rocks, or doing the chores like the other truck did. I used to haul 45-gallon drum barrels of fuel. I will eventually pass this truck on to one of my granddaughters to keep it in the family. I have another 1957 truck that will go to another granddaughter, and a 1937 Ford sedan that will go to my grandson,” he revealed. The Advance-Design is a light and medium duty truck series by Chevrolet, their first major redesign after the Second World War. It was billed as a larger, stronger and sleeker design in comparison to the earlier AK Series. “I like my 1952 truck because it is fun to drive. It certainly turns heads when you drive down the road with it. I end up talking to people whom I don’t know or have seen before

because they wonder about the truck,” he added. “This truck was originally two-tone brown–beige with brown fenders from the factory. When I was

looking for a truck colour, I wanted more of a brownish truck. This is a lavender red (purple-red) and is tough to keep clean, but otherwise it looks sharp,” said Gordon.

Kuzio explained that the minimum age to operate an OHV on public lands is 14. “The operator may be younger than 14 years of age on public lands if they are supervised by someone 18 years or older on the same OHV or another OHV in close proximity.” The following recommendations are suggested in an effort to ensure operators are following the laws, in hopes of reducing the risk of injury or death while riding or operating an OHV. • Wear safety equipment, including a proper-fitting safety-approved helmet, a jacket, long pants, goggles, boots and gloves. “When riding on public land in Alberta, all OHV users are required by law to wear an approved helmet,” said Kuzio. • Wear safety belts where provided. • Take an OHV operator safety course and, each new season, refresh your and younger riders’/ operators’ abilities on how to control, ride terrain, climb hills, turn and stop. • Only transport passengers on OHVs that are specifically designed to carry passengers. • Always abide by all traffic laws.

Exploring the countryside where other vehicles cannot go on off-highway vehicles (OHVs) can be fun and exciting, however, it also poses its own set of risks, especially to inexperienced riders and those under the age of 16. According to Alberta Health Services (AHS), between 2015 and 2020, children and youth in Alberta have experienced OHV-related injuries leading to Emergency Department (ED) or Urgent Care Centre (UCC) hospitalization and death. There have been 6,908 OHV-related ED and UCC visits in Alberta and 563 OHV-related hospitalizations for children and youth age 16 and younger in Alberta, with a total of 13 OHV-related deaths for children and youth age 16 years and younger in Alberta. In an effort to ensure the well-being of youth, AHS supports the Canadian Pediatric Society recommendation that children and youth under 16 years of age should not operate an ATV, even a child-sized or youth model. “Operating an off-highway vehicle is a high-risk activity,” said Camrose County Protective Services manager/Sergeant Mike Kuzio. “These vehicles are lighter, less stable, and more vulnerable in a crash than other vehicles on the road. Serving your community since 1906 Leone Mable Kuefler

January 26, 1932 ~ May 16, 2022 Leone Mable Kuefler was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She passed away on Monday, May 16, 2022 at the age of 90 years. She married Walter in 1950 and they were blessed with seven children. Leone enjoyed being a hockey/sports mom, golfing, trapshooting, curling, and excelled at wood restoration. Friends and family were always welcome in her home. We all loved the delicious meals she shared with us, and then playing tile rummy with her and Walter. It was guaranteed you would find gingersnaps in her cupboard. Left to cherish her memory are her children Dianne Kowalenko of Edmonton, Lloyd of Chandler, Arizona, Ron (Bev) of Camrose, Del (Lori) of Red Deer, Lyle of Fort Saskatchewan, and Arlyn (Teresa) of Camrose; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and siblings Lorene (Wilf) Willing of Camrose, Doris Allen of Edmonton, and Eleanor (Louis) Richaud of Forestburg. Leone was predeceased by her husband Walter; son Ken; daughter-in-law Diane; grandson Keegan; great-grandson Nolan; and three sisters Melva, Paulette and Phyllis. Christine Marie Zarski

Fred Gialet

August 29, 1931 ~ May 11, 2022 Fred was born in Ferintosh, Alberta, to parents Peter and Gunda (Tatjiana) Gialet. Despite being born with disabilities, his outlook on life was one of positivity and gratitude for life’s pleasures – especially friends and family. As a child, he was always helping his mother with chores and garden work. In 1967, the family moved to Camrose and his mother looked after him for as long as she was able. At the age of 37, he moved to his new home at Bethany Care Centre and loved interacting with the community. Fred spent many years going to Centra Cam Vocational Training Association which he thoroughly enjoyed and made many friends. With help from instructors, he was shown how to craft, paint, and assemble bird houses – he was always busy in his work area! When Fred couldn’t go to Centra Cam any longer, many of his friends would visit him at Bethany for an afternoon of puzzles, colouring, and visiting. He adored music and food, and when entertainers came to play at Bethany, he was the first one in the front row poised to enjoy the music. He never refused a second helping of food or dessert, and always put on his Sunday best for church in the chapel. Fred was a wonderful man and his positive spirit brought genuine joy to the people around him. Fred passed away on Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at the age of 90. He was predeceased by his parents; sister-in-law Velma Gialet; and brothers George and Bill Gialet. Left to cherish his memory are his sister-in-law Ruby Gialet and his nieces and nephews. A family graveside service was held on May 27, 2022. Inurnment has taken place at the Camrose Valleyview Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude towards the staff of Bethany Meadows for their care throughout the years. Without a doubt, their compassion made Fred’s life brighter. To Fred’s friends at Centra Cam, we also extend our sincerest thanks.

Pauline “Lena” Bowal

July 17, 1931 ~ May 21, 2022 Pauline Lena Bowal of Camrose, Alberta, formerly of Round Hill, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at the age of 90 years, with many of her family members able to say their goodbyes. Lena was born on July 17, 1931 in Camrose, the third child of Joseph and Annie Kushnerik. Lena grew up on the Kushnerik farm south of Round Hill and attended Kulaway School. She met the love of her life, Jack Bowal, at a wedding when they were both in the wedding party. They were married on May 24, 1952 and they celebrated 64 years of marriage. They welcomed six children into their family. Living on the Bowal family homestead as a young bride, Lena was an integral part of every aspect of farm life, learning all the things a farm wife needed to know. Raising and butchering chickens, growing a huge garden, all while caring for their young family. Lena was an active member of the Round Hill community. Her door was always open, coffee pot on and a tasty treat ready for visits from neighbours, family and friends. After 34 years on the farm, they made the decision to move to Camrose, where they started their semi-retirement. Lena’s time was spent volunteering with Meals on Wheels, CWL and also providing child care for several families. Lena will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren for her special meals that only Grandma could provide. Made with so much love always tasted delicious! Some of Lena’s hobbies included tending to her flower garden, crafts and spending hours doing puzzles. Lena always mentioned how very lucky they were to have wonderful neighbours, both on the farm and in town. Lena is survived by her children, Bob, Don (Paula), Darryl, Sharon (Larry) Wright, Betty Ann (James) McEathron and Jim (Sheri); 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren, one greatgreat grandchild; extended family; Terri Ross, Patsy and Stephanie Drysdale; two brothers and one sister; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband Jack, and her parents Joe and Annie Kushnerik. A Funeral Mass was held Monday, May 30, 2022 at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church. A recording of the Funeral Mass will be found on the St. Francis Xavier website https://stfxcamrose.caedm.ca/ under “Recorded Masses,” once made available by the church. City hears residents’ concerns on 68 Street dust By Lori Larsen

David Walter Seville

David Walter Seville of Camrose, Alberta was born on August 16, 1931 in Lacombe, Alberta. He passed on May 22, 2022 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose, Alberta at the age of 90 years. He resided in the Chigwell, Alberta area east of Lacombe. The day he finished high school in 1951, he left home to homestead at Blueberry Mountain and Silver Creek area near Peace River, Alberta until 1957. In 1957, he moved to Calgary where he met Donna, and they were married on November 18, 1960. David and Donna lived in Cochrane from 1973 to 1989. In 1972, he became part owner of Golden Arrow Manufacturing until the early 1980s. At this time, he went back to school to become a Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic. In 1989, David and Donna moved to Bashaw, Alberta to farm full time until they retired in 2012 and moved into Camrose, Alberta. David is survived by his loving wife Donna (nee Nelson); daughters Marjorie (Doug) Niemi, Nancy Seville (Sean), Katherine (Joe) Horvath and Peggy Seville; grandchildren Angela, Dale, Brandon (Julia), Matthew, Jenny, Lindsey, Grace (Gabe) and Curtis; great-grandchildren Jack and Felix; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Charles Leonard and Laura Ellen Seville; sisters Jean Seville and Helen Armstrong; brother Robert Seville and greatgranddaughter Ellie Rei Guy. As per David’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation Heart Function Clinic.

Residents living adjacent to 68 Street (west side of Victoria Park) expressed their frustration with the amount of dust they have to contend with in their yards, on their decks and, in some instances, their homes, arising from a stretch of road on 68th Street north of 54 Avenue. Melissa Stuckley addressed council with her concerns about the constant dust. “This dust is black, it is thick and it is full of carcinogens and tar and the calcium from all the applications the City has put on. When the applications go on, it is wonderful, but it seems within two or three weeks, the graders are grading it up again disturbing all the dust.” Stuckley described dust settling on the siding of her home, in her yard and, in some instances, on her vehicle. “I am more concerned on the type of dust coming from that road. Traffic is very fast. They do not obey the speed limit which stirs up the dust more. I would like to see something permanent done with this (stretch) of the road.” Harvey Benke also spoke about the dust concern. “We would like to enjoy our backyard. Last year, we didn’t get to enjoy our backyard because of the dust problem. I was wondering if the City is able to do something more permanent.” Speaker Raymond Cyre said while he is able to close windows in the summer and use an air conditioner to keep his home cool, not everybody has the luxury and consequently this dust is also settling inside homes of residents of the area in question. “It is not a regular dust. It is a black dust. “I have been there for 27 years and it was gravel then. We respect what the City is trying to do to keep down the washboard (with applications and grading). The amount of traffic has increased over the years due to the closure on 54 Avenue and truck route. Now that back road becomes a major route for grain haulers and farmers coming into town, so we do have a lot of traffic.” Cyre added that recycling asphalt was a great idea and cost saving, but that the City should not just keep grading. “That was a good solution for the time being until the grader started grinding it all up and it became dust again.” The City also received two more letters of concern from other residents regarding this matter. City of Camrose general manager of infrastructure Kris Johnson presented a report for information. “Some of the strategies

we have tried are calcium chloride (dust control product), applying asphalt millings, as well as the addition of asphalt millings mixed with oil followed by compaction.” Johnson said the major issue with that particular section of the road is a poor sub-base. “It has a poor sub-grade, so any surface maintenance we do quickly washboards, so in order to maintain the travel surface of that road, we need regrade it often. Currently, we are out there approximately one hour a week at a cost of about $4,000 annually.” Johnson further explained that a long-term option would require reconstructing the roadway by removing all unsuitable material that is there and rebuilding the road structure using geotextile material, gravel and asphalt. “Depending on the length of that section that we reconstruct (the report indicated a width of 10 metres and length between 300 to 450 metres), it would cost between $315,000 to $465,000.” Johnson’s report in-

face is going to washboard within two or three weeks. If unmaintained, vehicles are going to have to slow down to between 20 to 30 kilometres per hour to pass through there. “If you want to continue the level of service of a 60 kilometres per hour road, it is going to require some level of sub-base reconstruction. If you look at just removing the unsuitable and building back to a gravel structure, you could reduce that per linear cost to about 65 per cent, so about $650 per linear to get it back to a rebuilt gravel roadway.” Councillor Joy-Anne Murphy inquired as to how the funding for improvement to this section would occur, as to whether or not it would be through a local improvement bylaw or something impacting all City ratepayers. Mayor PJ Stasko replied that the cost to make changes would impact all ratepayers. Stasko suggested administration return to council with some businesses cases at budget time, presenting council with some options and the costs.

is the quality of the dust, would it make any sense or would it help any to change the quality of the dust and remove the black and just grade, until we can address the sub-base?” Johnson replied, “I don’t know if gravel was there to begin with and what depth the millings have been graded into it. We may be removing the majority of the gravel that is there, and then have to put back something that would then be thrown away when we go to reconstruct it. We could possibly salvage some of it, but there would be a cost to that as well.” Johnson suggested that the City could apply water in conjunction with the one hour per week blading that is currently occurring in an effort to mitigate the dust that is stirred up during blading, which he felt accounts for a lot of the dust concerns. “But then it would remain as is for the rest of the week.” Hoveland asked if there was a tree planting project in place for that area. City manager Malcolm

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The section of roadway causing dust concerns for Victoria Park residents, is just north of 54 Avenue on 68 Street heading out of City limits.

cluded speed data collected in October 2021. Northbound (October 5 to 11), the average number of vehicles was 251, with an average daily speed of 54.9 to 62.9 kilometres per hour and 85th percentile speed was 68-76 kilometres per hour. Southbound (October 12 to 18), the average number of vehicles was 167, with an average daily speed of 52.2 to 58.4 kilometres per hour and 85th percentile speed was 64-72 kilometres per hour. In response to an inquiry from Councillor Lana Broker about resurfacing that particular section of roadway, Johnson said, “It is the sub-base structure of this section that is causing the issues. I think anything we do on the sur-

Councillor DJ Ilg commented that he felt it was something that needed to be addressed now. “It seems that over the years we have tried to look at multiple different avenues that are cost efficient. I think there is only one of two options that is really going to fix this and I think we should start looking at some formal quotes. We need to fix it once and for all instead of trying to bandaid a solution that could drag out for a year or more.” Councillor Agnes Hoveland inquired, “It seems to me that the quality of the dust is a major factor, and if this doesn’t come back to us as council until budget considerations, which is the fall, we still have the summer to deal with it. Because it

Boyd replied that there is no tree planting project in place at this time, but that is one of the options presented to council for reducing the dust concern on residents’ property by creating a windbreak. Councillor Don Rosland said that in speaking with some residents of the area, they expressed their concern over planting trees because it would block the view they enjoy from their decks. “And if we go back to a gravel road, the dust would be horrendous.” The matter will return to council for consideration of businesses cases outlining permanent options during budget deliberations and, in the interim, the City will mitigate the dust as much as possible.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range. Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

ATV safety Continued from page 15

“When operating an OHV on public land, the vehicle must be registered, insured, have a licence plate, have a headlight and tail-light and an approved muffler,” explained Camrose County Protective Services manager/ Sergeant Mike Kuzio. “The operation of pocket bikes, mini quads, power scooters or golf carts is prohibited from operation on any roadway by Provincial legislation.” In accordance with the Traffic Safety Act, Section 120(2), persons are prohibited from operating offhighway vehicles on any portion of the highway. The highway includes the roadway surface, ditches, medians, and right-of-way up to the fenceline, as defined in the Act. Further to that, Kuzio said that when operating an OHV on public lands, the operators must follow all traffic safety laws and rules of the road and abide by all traffic safety devices. On a side note, Kuzio explained that mobility aids (electric scooter/wheelchairs) are allowed on all roadways, and laws which affect pedestrians also apply to mobility aids. • Never operate an OHV when using alcohol or drugs. “Anyone operating an OHV while their ability to do so is impaired by alcohol or drugs will be charged the same as if operating any other motor vehicle,” noted Kuzio. • Prior to riding, inspect the ATV including: the brakes, liquids, tires, headlights and other safety equipment. • Familiarize yourself with of the terrain on which you are traveling, and be aware of any potential hazards. • Avoid riding during darker hours. • Follow posted signs, stay on the trails, and be aware of the weather and trail conditions. “Remember, you must obtain permission from land owners to access any private land,” said Kuzio. “Private lands do not have to be posted or fenced. If it is private, you must obtain permission.” After obtaining permission to ride on private land, remember to use respect and treat the property with the utmost care and consideration. Pack all your garbage out, do not have fires, cause as little damage or disruption to the land as possible and always leave gates and fences as you found them. Procrastiplanting: When you have a million things to do but ignore all of them and tend to your plants instead.

Sometimes I think I’m buying vegetables, but when I get home, I realize they’re just regular doughnuts.

Central Agencies Realty Home of the Week

Victoria Park bungalow

By Lori Larsen

Located in Victoria Park, this fourbedroom, three-bathroom bungalow has been beautifully maintained and offers room for a growing family. The immaculate yard and neat curb appeal will instantly tell you how well cared for this home has been. Inside the home, laminate wood flooring follows through from the living area to the kitchen. Curl up in front of the cozy gas fireplace in the living room or set up some comfy chairs in the front bay window and take in the warm sunshine. You can easily entertain guests or keep an eye on children as you prepare meals in the open dining/kitchen area that features a peninsula where you can serve appetizers or snacks. Plenty of cabinets and a pantry offer lots of storage space and classic grey-toned backsplash tiles, and newer appliances add a crisp clean look.

Patio doors lead out to the back two-tiered deck and spectacular back yard that is completely fenced, landscaped and ready for summer leisure. The main floor is complete with a good-sized primary bedroom with three-piece ensuite, two more bedrooms and four-piece main bathroom. Downstairs there is even more space to accommodate the whole family with a huge family/games room area that features a wood-burning fireplace. Imagine a big screen television for movie night and maybe a ping pong or pool table for fun family gatherings. Another bedroom and two-piece bathroom would make an older child happy to have their own private space. Enjoy the stress-free feeling of this move-in ready home located at 5414-60 Street and priced at $349,900. For a private viewing, contact Al-Karim (Al) Mohamed at: Central Agencies Realty 4870-51 Street, Camrose 780-672-4495 or 587-322-5511 Cell Al-Karim (Al) Mohamed

A new airplane has been developed that cannot crash. Made from rubber polymers, it will just bounce. The aircraft was invented by Boeing, Boeing, Boeing. People have always named children after expensive things – Mercedes, Dior, Chardonnay. Next year, watch for babies named Electricity, Gas and Groceries.

My wife and I were out for dinner and the waitress started irting with me. “She obviously has COVID,” my wife said. “Why?” I asked. My wife replied with a sneer, “Because clearly she has no taste.”

At my age, I’m good at multitasking. I can listen, ignore and forget all at once.

I was at Jubilee Park and a lady loudly called out, “Anyone who wants an ice cream, come over here!” I quickly headed over along with several others. She handed out ice cream to them all and then asked me, “Who are you?” It was then that I realized that the others were her family.

I thought I was in a bad mood, but it’s been a few years so I guess this is who I am now. At my age, rolling out of bed in the morning is the easy part. Getting o the oor is a whole other story.

Breaking News! A man has been stealing wheels o of police cars. Police are working tirelessly to catch him.

A son tells his father, “I have an imaginary girlfriend.” The father sighs and says, “You know, you could do better.” “Thanks, Dad,” says the son. The father shakes his head and says, “I was talking to your girlfriend.” The eye doctor will SEE me now? Must be nice!

And God Created the Cat…

On the first day of creation, God created the cat. On the second day, God created man to serve the cat. On the third day, God created tuna, mice and all the animals of the earth to serve as potential food for the cat. On the fourth day, God created honest toil so that man could labour for the good of the cat. On the fifth day, God created the ball of yarn, the feather thingie on a string, and the catnip mouse so that the cat might or might not be amused. On the sixth day, God created veterinary science to keep the cat healthy and the man broke. On the seventh day, God tried to rest, but the cat woke Him up at 5:00 a.m.
