The City of Camrose Recreation and Culture Department has teamed up with Community Addiction and Mental Health, Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge to encourage residents to get active through a variety of fun and accessible activities supported by Alberta Health Services Move Your Mood (MYM) program.

City of Camrose councillor Lana Broker didn’t let a pair of high heeled sandals stand in her way of participating in some jumping jacks during the kickoff of the ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge held at Mirror Lake on June 2.

The month long challenge encourages all communities across Canada to take part and track movement for a chance to take the top spot and possibly a $100,000 prize. For full details on the challenge, see page 2 of this issue.

Residents encouraged to track activity By Lori Larsen

In conjunction with the nationwide ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge event, the City of Camrose Recreation and Culture Department has teamed with Community Addiction and Mental Health Alberta Health Services (AHS), supported by Alberta Health Services Move Your Mood (MYM) program, with fun ways to encourage residents to move their bodies. The ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge will run the month of June in search of Canada’s more active communities. On June 2, at the Mirror Lake Bill Fowler Centre, City of Camrose Mayor PJ Stasko, along with councillors Agnes Hoveland, Don Rosland, Lucas Banack, Joy-Anne Murphy and Lana Broker, officially “jump”-started Camrose’s chance at being not only one of the top, but the top active community. “We want you to help put Camrose on the map,” said City of Camrose Recreation and Culture Recreation Program coordinator Christine McCord. “The top 50 communities with the most active minutes and greatest community engagement will be eligible to win $100,000 towards community recreation. In addition, there are prizes for

• Reform Party Member of Parliament Jack Ramsay swept to another overpowering election victory on June 2, taking 70% or 30,306 of the 42,935 votes cast. Ramsay won 192 of the 194 polls, with the only two losses coming in Chauvin and Delia. No other candidate in the province’s 26 ridings received as many votes. • Dr. Ken Rayment received the Prestigious Lifetime Membership in the Alberta Dental Association after forty years of giving dedicated dental care. Dr. Rayment, who came to Camrose in 1956, has led an active life in the community through the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Lions Club, and Ski Club to name just a few. Ken, at the time, was practicing dentistry on a part time basis. • Groves’ Value Drug Mart and Camrose Trophies Engraving and Gifts were named Camrose Chamber of Commerce members of the month for May and June. Small business week committee chair Mike Ploner presented awards to Gerry, Barry, and Sandi Galenza from Groves’ and Al and Jackie Rostad from Camrose Trophies.

• Neighbouring communities sent contestants to the “Bundle-Pitching Contest” at the 15th Annual Jaywalkers’ Jamboree. Contestants were judged on their skill and “knowhow” in pitching bundles of grain into a threshing machine powered by a steam engine, owned and operated by Casper Foss, assisted by machine man Palmer Pederson. Alvar Person, Jamboree Chairman, appointed Gilbert Nesvold to organize the competition. Mr. Nesvold appointed a knowledgeable pair of judges, Elmer Olson and Jack Graham who tallied years of bundle-pitching experience. Contestants included Ralph DeWolfe, a Norwegian from Bashaw who swings a nice fork; Bill McDonald, President of the Wetaskiwin Chamber, who claimed he had never before had a pitch fork in his hand; Colin Lang, the youngest contestant with plenty of skill, from Viking; Rudy Swanson, Mayor of Camrose and formal Bundle-Pitching Champ, who put on his usual good show; Harold Spiller of Killam who finished the contest in fine style; and the BundlePitching Champion Jim Thirsk of Kelsey, who represented the County of Camrose.

The former national champions Camrose Merchants fastpitch team will be holding its reunion here on June 9 to 11. One of the most popular pitchers on that team, Glen Jevne, is excited about the reunion. “The players were so close for so many years. You are part of a big family and then when I retired, that was it. There are a lot of guys I haven’t seen since. This reunion will give us a chance to reacquaint with all of the players who were connected to the Merchants over the years. Hopefully, we can spend some time together and I’m excited abut it,” said Glen, who still lives in Wetaskiwin. The pitcher started his career with the Wetaskiwin Car Capitals before joining the Camrose Merchants. “Peter Brown, everyone knows how great he was, was leaving Camrose and manager Jim Reed was looking for a pitcher. The Car Capitals were struggling financially and deciding if they were going to continue. So, that is how I joined Camrose,” explained Glen. “Camrose was always better at recruiting players and Jim was always a creative manager. He was very knowledgable of the game and also inventive. Grow the conversation about elder abuse

By Murray Green

The Alberta Elder Abuse Awareness Council (AEAAC) is celebrating 20 years of being a voice. Currently, there are approximately 700,000 Albertans over the age of 65, and an estimate is that roughly one in 10 seniors are experiencing abuse. Abuse ranges from physical, psychological, sexual and emotional, to the most prevalent form, financial abuse. Check out

website for more information at www.albertaelderabuse.ca/. Every year, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is on June 15. The Alberta Elder Abuse Awareness Council is a group of Albertans dedicated to increasing awareness and supporting a community response to elder abuse. The AEAAC was first formed in 2002. Since that time, resources have been developed, such as the

Staying Safe handbook for older adults; several learning events have been hosted, such as Taking Action Against Elder Abuse for service providers; and online learning has been offered with Core Alberta. In Camrose, the case manager is Kari Cameron. Kari is the support worker and advocate with over 20 years of experience in the human services field, working with children, teens, parents and families,

having worked in home visitation, childcare and school settings and at the family resource network. Kari can be reached at 780-672-0141. In Camrose, the community support agencies are Camrose and District Support Services, Service Options for Seniors, Camrose Senior Centre, Hospice Society of Camrose and District, Camrose Adult Mental Health Hub and Seniors Coalition.

We have encountered some trials and tribulations along the way, soldiered on and come out stronger because of them. The world awaits...what will you make of it?” Valedictorian Chad Nichol began his address with a thank you to families, guardians, friends, teachers and administration for supporting the Grade 12 students of ÉCHHS Farewell 2022. “To the class of ’22, today should be a celebration of all of the hard work you have put in. So celebrate responsibly, if I may add, with your family, friends, relatives and maybe someone you haven’t seen in awhile.” Nichol remarked on how students not only learned the material in the classrooms, but how students also learned individual, teamwork and problem-solving skills. “But outside the classroom, outside those doors, that is where our friendships flourished, teaching us how to handle the nonanalytical side of society. Our friends showed us there is much more to life outside of school–friendship, happiness and a balance between work and play.” Nichol reminisced with anecdotes, the journey the students experienced, concluding with a reference to the global pandemic which he noted ended the Grade 12/2022 students’ Grade 10 year and enveloped their Grade 11 year. “What I see in front of me today are people who

are going to pursue academics, trades, sports, the arts and other professions. But really it doesn’t matter what you become or what your job title you are given because what the world needs more than that is people like us–resilient, dedicated and ambitious people. “We have endured things that no one should have to go through and it has made us stronger. It has given us a unique leg up on life, we are one of a kind. Built “diff” as we would say. “Today marks the next chapter in our everlasting adventure novel, and we will continue to write this story in whichever way we chose because we are special. We are the ÉCCHS graduating class of 2022.” In conclusion, retiring teachers Caroline Simonson and Miles Walsh were acknowledged for their years of service. The afternoon ceremony ended with the presentation of certificates to students as they crossed the stage from a plethora of learning and memories to venture into what awaits them in the world.

have learned and you can be the voice of the next generation. You have experienced high school years unlike anyone before you, and you are aware that life can change drastically rather abruptly. This has made you more aware and more resilient.” In his remarks, Cole said that school was more than just to learn work skills, but to learn what it means to be human.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster ÉCCHS principal Shane Gau presented Grade 12 student Kamryn Uglem with her certificate.

Coming down the school year home stretch It’s been a while, but I haven’t forgotten the month of June in the years when I taught Grade 7, 8 and 9 in a County school. My expertise was English and I did indeed teach English literature, grammar, writing and spelling to all three junior high school grades. However, it being a smaller school division, I also taught whatever other subjects needed a teacher that year. One year, I had to teach Grade 7 science. At that time, the science curriculum had many units about farming. I grew up in town and took my teacher training in the big city. The students mostly lived on farms. They were clearly more knowledgeable than I was. I gave it my best shot, but was relieved the next year when I no longer had to teach Grade 7 science. And so. The month of June. In addition to the usual lesson preparation, teaching, marking, recess and lunchtime supervision responsibilities, we had to make sure the provincial curriculum requirements were fulfilled. If we were teaching a grade that wrote provincial departmental exams, we did everything in our power to prepare the students for those exams. We made sure marks were up to date, prepared final report cards and entered the relevant information in the school division’s records. June was the busiest month for teachers. ***

MS Bike Tour is back By Murray Green

The MS Bike from Leduc to Camrose is set for another year, June 9 and 10. For 33 years, MS Bike Leduc to Camrose has brought thousands together as the largest MS Bike

event in Canada. Since its inception in 1990, this tour has grown from a small 100-person event, raising $56,000, to an event typically hosting nearly 2,000 riders, supported by almost 500 volunteers and raising over $2,000,000 annually.

On the first day the ride leaves from Nisku and goes to Camrose. After an overnight stay, the bikers then head to Leduc from Camrose. Register to fundraise at msbike.ca.

My absolute toughest moments as a teacher came one year when, to help with scheduling of Phys. Ed. classes, there was a class of Grade 7 boys. Over one weekend, a boy in that class was killed in a car crash. Monday morning, I wondered what I could say or do that might be useful for that class of boys–and all the students in all the grades in this small school where every student knew every other student, or at least their families. I don’t remember what I said, but to this day, I hope it was somehow appropriate. ***

Many years later, I got to have an experience that every teacher should have sometime. I received a phone call from a former student. He told me his name and wondered if I remembered him. Of course I did. The words that came out of my mouth were, “How old are you now?” He was in his early forties. He explained that he and another former student–yes, I remembered the second student too–had run into one another at a funeral. “It’s okay, the funeral wasn’t for one of your students,” the caller said. The two former classmates got to talking about former students and former teachers and where they were now. “We wondered,” said my early-40s former student, “If you would like to go out for dinner with two dashing middle-aged men.” Of course I would! It was a treat to see them. One of them, I knew, had grown up in a difficult family situation. I was so pleased to hear about the fulfilling life he’d since created for himself, his wife and children. Both men were in careers that seemed perfect for their personalities and abilities. They told me about their lives and they told me “Mrs. Hutchinson” stories–incidents of which I had no memory, but which they remembered. *** Here are two things I’ve concluded. First, if you’re born to be a teacher, you may do other things in your life, but you remember your students and you hold them in your heart. And second, if you’re a teacher, you probably have far more influence for a much longer time than you imagine. Happy June! ***

I’d love to hear from you. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send an email to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.

B I D D I N G O P E N S J U N E 1 6 A N D C LO S E S J U N E 2 3 , 2 0 2 2 Speed sleeping By Laurel Nadon

My husband once almost got himself into a sticky situation because of how fast he can fall asleep. We were expecting our first baby and chatting at night before bed about names. Our girl name had been decided long ago, but a boy name was proving more difficult. Then I suggested one, he agreed and promptly fell asleep. (By promptly, I mean the words had literally just left his mouth.) In the morning, I was talking about how exciting it was that we finally had both names nailed down. He looked at me in surprise and said he had never agreed to the boy name; he didn’t like that name and would never agree to it. From this I learned that I should never have important discussions with my husband when he is mostly asleep; and that I am incredibly jealous that he can fall asleep so fast. I had heard before that soldiers are trained to fall asleep quickly, so if they only have 10 minutes before an important operation, they use the time wisely. I decided to investigate further and now have a few tips to try out. In the 2012 book Relax and Win: Championship Performance, Lloyd Bud Winter describes a routine created by the Navy Pre-Flight School to help pilots fall asleep. Six weeks later, 96 per cent of the pilots could fall asleep within two minutes or less, and even more impressive, they could fall asleep while sitting in a chair, listening to a recording of machine-gun fire, and after drinking coffee. The first tip is to tighten your facial muscles and then slowly loosen the muscles. Next, drop your shoulders and then your hands. While doing this, breathe in and out, listening to the sound of your breath. Relax your chest and legs. Clear your mind of any stresses. Visualize a relaxing scene like watching rolling waves on a beach, lying in a canoe in a calm lake with a clear blue sky, or lying in a dark hammock in a dark room. Let thoughts come and go. If visualizing doesn’t come easy, repeat “don’t think” to yourself over and over. Repeat every night for six weeks. I am excited to try this out because of the 96 per cent success rate. However, I have noticed in the past that my main problem is clearing my mind. My mind does not want to clear! When I imagine a blank, white piece of paper, my mind will ask questions like, “Is the page hole punched? Is it really blank, or are there lines?” I fear that imagining being in a canoe on a lake would just lead to questions, like “Where is the rest of my family? Did we pack enough bug spray?” Sometimes there are events going on that make it harder to fall sleep. Much to my husband’s amusement, starting a new season of coaching our kids in soccer is enough to delay falling asleep for me. Or I am pondering the ridiculous things my kids bicker about, like the battle for a bouncy ball this morning which led to this comment: “Stop putting the ball in your invisible pocket!” My husband does not need any of these tips. Many, many times it has taken me an hour or more to fall asleep, while he has nodded off in under two minutes. He once fell asleep three seconds after finishing the last word he was saying to me. I counted. As far as I can tell, the key to his success is having a physically tiring job. Or maybe it is genetic–I have seen my mother-in-law curl up on a chair and fall asleep within minutes, while her grandchildren played not too quietly around her. I tried the tip right away about loosening my facial muscles while I was trying to fall asleep. I was shocked that my face was so tense! Up next is trying all of the tips together–maybe in six weeks, I’ll be cracking my husband’s three-second record.

Lovely running for UCP candidate By Murray Green

Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely has put her name in for nomination for the UCP candidate to prepare for next May’s provincial election. “I have had some good momentum with projects and initiatives that I would like to see through. One of the major ones was my Motion 524 which was passed with unanimous consent in the Chamber, recommending the government take action to address the shortage of

Jackie Lovely

large animal rural veterinarians that Alberta is experiencing. This issue was brought to my attention from consulting with constituents,” said Lovely. “The vision is that the Camrose Constituency students and the surrounding area could attend Augustana for their science degree, then

transfer to the U of C for the program. Those who have roots here are more likely to return, build a life and have a family. Mine is a multi-generational approach to support.” She was appointed as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Associate Minister for the Status of Women. “In this role, I am working on how the government can best support elder women on aging in place, personal finances, estate planning, and life events like the death of a spouse, divorce or health issue.” She is also a member of the Premier’s Council for Charities and Civil Societies. “We have done extensive community consultation province wide with a number of recommendations that the government is currently reviewing.” Lovely wants the province to follow a budget process. “As a fiscal conservative, it is important to me that we have a balanced budget. That goal has been achieved ahead of projection through focus, sacrifice and dedication by Albertans.” She wants to continue her local work. “As a resident of Camrose, I am determined to ensure our entire riding has access to the services they need and deserve.”

The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation and KidSport Alberta wants all kids in our community to be able to play Hockey. They’re lending their support to KidSport Camrose. If you are registered or will be registering with a local minor hockey association you may qualify to have 100% of your registration and equipment paid for.

Communication is the key. “I have started my sixth round of door knocking. It’s a priority for me to hear directly from community members. Avian flu had been an issue, but through careful management and working with the proper officials, the illness seems to be coming under control. It was producers in the Camrose Constituency who brought this to my attention and also indicated to me that they were happy with the support that was provided.” Lovely wants to support local. “When I was elected, I promised that despite the fact that I live and have an office in Camrose, I would be available throughout the entire constituency not only physically to attend events and meetings in the community, but to ensure that provincial funding was equally distributed.” Only members are allowed to vote for who they would like their candidate to be. The City of Camrose Planning and Development Department is updating the City of Camrose Land Use Bylaw #2929-17. The Land Use Bylaw guides all development applications and permit processes, and regulates the use of land within our community. Land use regulation ensures economic, orderly, sustainable, and attractive development of land within Camrose. One of the goals for this review was to make the document more userfriendly and functional for daily use. Some topics of specific review were: 1. Urban Hens; 2. Demolition Development Permits; 3. Detached Secondary Suites; 4. Live-Works Units; and 5. Allowable uses at the airport. Any person(s) who have an interest are encouraged to attend the open house in person to learn more about the Land Use Bylaw Update. Should you be unable to attend the Open House, but would like further information or to comment on the implementation of the Land Use Bylaw Update, please contact Aaron Leckie – City of Camrose Manager of Planning and Development or visit our website www.ourcamrose.ca/land-use-bylaw-update for more information on the draft regulations. Golfers concerned over service By Lori Larsen

During the May 16 City of Camrose Committee of the Whole meeting, several residents attended to hear council’s response to a letter sent to the Mayor and council by Patrick Bohnet outlining his concern over the levels of service at the Camrose Golf Course. Bohnet’s letter included in detail: his background; concerns about the current operations and reputation of the Camrose Golf Course; current ideas/input to be addressed by City council for the 2022 golf season; information and concerns about the Junior Program; membership pricing and marketing of the golf course and a suggestion of moving the curling rink to the golf course. In speaking on the intent behind his letter Bohnet said, “I see the current model has moved from a service model to a cost reduction model. Bohnet clarified that most of the items brought forward in his letter was based on personal experiences as well as feedback from other members. “My fear in knowing that City council there potentially was a decision or discussion around selling part of the golf Course. “Seeing the service and the product this year and last year has significantly declined to the point that I am worried that discussion may come forward again.” Mayor PJ Stasko indicated that during his time on City Council, there was no discussion on the sale of the golf course, which was verified by Councillor Agnes Hoveland, who said, “There has certainly been a rumour floating around but it has never come to council, never been an official proposal. We have never entertained the thought.” Councillor Lana Broker inquired about the junior golf program. “One of the things you brought up in your letter, Pat, was the Junior Program. We basically have no Junior Program anymore unfortunately. Please correct me if I am wrong, it is because we don’t have anybody to teach it, you have to be a pro to give lessons?” Bohnet replied, “Yes and no. Someone who is a certified teaching instructor needs to be the parameters around it to receive revenue. So just anybody off the street couldn’t do lessons without some kind of certification.” Broker further inquired, “Do you think a golf pro would be more profitable in the aspect of what they would bring to the golf course in the different opportunities they would bring? Would that person be more apt to fight for championships and the different golf tournaments?” Bohnet explained that

CPGA professionals have the background and education to do marketing, understand product inventory, needs of golf community when it comes to promoting, marketing and having tournaments, and generating revenue. “Definitely, if we are going to get back to that service and revenue model, I would highly suggest that would be a good plan moving forward.” Broker asked City of Camrose Community Services general manager Ryan Poole if going with a pro would be an option the City would consider. Poole said that administration is always open to any discussion and direction from council. Bohnet added that, in his opinion, the food service part of the golf course could also be a potential revenue generator, specifically referring to the banquet services as a source of revenue during tournaments. City of Camrose manager Malcolm Boyd explained that as the City approaches budget deliberation season, there will be a variety of business cases and recommendations brought forward to council. “The Golf Course always figures quite highly in the terms of the amount of discussion that goes on there because of the level of subsidy that is required. Certainly, in recent years, we have been in cost control mode and whether that pendulum has swung too far on the service level reduction is a question for council.” Councillor DJ Ilg asked for more insight on what caused the demise of the Junior Program and what is needed to initiate the program. “I see a Junior Program as crucial to the success of a golf course. Bringing up the youth of the community, educating them in their sport of choice and having an element for them to go to like any other minor sport.” Bohnet said, referring to when he was a staff member in the pro shop. “I coordinated and ran the program. It was always assigned to an assistant or staff member of the golf course and ever since we lost that certification level of having a golf pro and having that responsibility, when I left the golf course, that ended.” In answer to inquiries about the Junior Program, Poole commented, “The year before, we had nothing because of COVID. A lot of programs were shut down, but last year and a couple years before, the City actually had Bill Penny (golf pro) on contract. He ran a July and August full Junior Program all summer and the last we heard, he is supposed to be running a program again this year.” The report was accepted for information.

Did you know, according to trivia, the first “real” golf ball was known as a “feathery”golf ball? The ball was basically a leather sack filled with boiled goose feathers, then stitched up and painted. Expensive to produce and very easily damaged, the “feathery” golf balls were reserved for the privileged few who could afford to use them. Today’s golf balls are composed of a butadiene rubber centre surrounded by one or more rubber mantles topped off with a tough skin.

Now is the opportunity to clean out all those half-empty containers that may be dangerous if dumped down the drain, poured on the ground, or even sent to the Camrose Regional Landfill. Every householder uses products in the house and garden containing chemicals that are hazardous when disposed of improperly. Mixed together in landfills, these chemicals can be dangerous – to the workers and to the environment. Keep your materials in their original containers. If the container is broken or cracked, place it inside a leak-proof package and label it. If you discover jars or cans of unidentified chemicals, take them to the Round-Up and tell a staff person you are unsure of the contents. Any container that cautions about careful use of the product or disposal of the container should be included in the Hazardous Waste Round-Up. All the materials collected at the Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up will be collected, classified, manifested, packed and transported by trained personnel, where the waste will be taken for proper treatment and disposal. The following items will be accepted, but to reduce program costs, the preferred recycling locations are listed: • Paint at the Recycling Depot • Used Oil, Containers, and Filters at the Landfill Your cooperation and support of the Camrose Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up is most appreciated. Examples of typical household hazardous wastes are: - Adhesives - Aerosols - Ammonia - Art Supplies - Bleach - Barbecue starter - Chemicals - Cleaning fluids - Disinfectants - Drain cleaners - Flea powder - Herbicides

- Insecticides - Metal polish - Oven cleaner - Pesticides - Pharmaceuticals - Rodent poison - Solvents - Swimming pool chemicals - Waxes - Wood preservatives

SATURDAY JUNE

Tony literally grew up helping his dad at his pizza restaurant in Ponoka, AB. Here he is, now in Camrose! He brought his family, wife Kalea and three kids with him, along with family recipes, to set up his own little shop at 4937-49 Street, directly east of Canada Post. Tony makes homemade pizza sauce, meat sauce, tzatziki and pizza dough right in store. Y-NOT Pizza + Pasta also sells wings, subs and salads. And let’s not forget mini donuts! Let’s explain Y-NOT Pizza – where did the name come from? That’s easy! It’s TONY spelled backwards. As for the 2-4-U part, it means that you get two pizzas (or pastas) from the price on the menu. But single pizzas are also sold at single prices if two is too many for you. Tony and staff welcome large group orders for schools, teams, meetings and parties. Please give 24 hours’ notice so we have time to prepare your special order while serving all our other valued customers. The social media crowd has already discovered and liked Y-NOT Pizza + Pasta with raves, five stars, shares and likes. You must try it too!

Wilton ready to release An Incoming Tide By Murray Green

Camrose author Terry Wilton will be launching his book An Incoming Tide on Saturday, June 18, at 7 p.m. at Fox & Fable Book & Game Café. Terry will be providing details of his book as well as sharing a concert of original keyboard jazz music. “I will also be doing a reading and jazz concert in the garden at the Camrose Railway Station in the afternoon of Sunday, July 17,” he shared.

The story is about psychologist Estelle Caylie’s life that is getting complicated. Unfortunately, it didn’t even start out well. Estelle remembers very little of her troubled childhood, a childhood she survived through her voracious reading. Then, with the untimely death of her brother under suspicious circumstances, Estelle goes about finding her estranged sister to unite the family for the funeral.

Buskas brings back Spirit Lake prize By Murray Green

Merlin Buskas of Ferintosh didn’t have to search long and hard to find his 1972 Chevrolet truck. “I found this truck and purchased it the way it is. I haven’t done anything to it,” said Merlin. “I found it in Spirit Lake, Iowa at a dealership. I just happened to stumble upon it. My youngest daughter sent me on a road trip to south Iowa to pick up a pro vet kit (an equine first aid kit complete with creams) with a Nissan truck. She is a manager of a veterinarian clinic in Grande Prairie. She asked if I wanted to do a road trip because the company told her it may take a month to six weeks, but she wanted it sooner than later,” explained Merlin. Chevrolet and GMC are trucks that share many similarities when it comes to the drivetrain and the overall appearance. “Coming back, I drove past Spirit Lake and Cruz’N Motors, which is a classic car dealer. I saw this truck sitting on the lot,” shared Merlin. “It only had 55,000 original miles on it. I liked the fact of the year it was and it was a Chevrolet.” The C/K was Chevrolet and GMC’s full-size pickup truck line from October 1959 until 2000 in the United States and Canada. The C indicated two-wheel

FUN FACTS

The 1972 models were very similar to the 1971 models, with the only change being that the rear view mirror was glued to the windshield rather than bolted to the top of the cab, and metal or vinyl-covered flat door panels were no longer available. All trim level door panels were molded plastic with integral armrests and woodgrain inserts on Cheyenne and Sierra trim levels. Internal differences included a new door panel design and the addition of a strengthening screw on the inside of the door below the vent window division bar. Chevrolet and GMC had their fair share of differences. Two-wheel-drive, long-box trucks are the easiest examples to find these days as they were produced in the greatest quantities. Four-wheel-drive pickups are considerably rarer, especially short-wheelbase half-tons. In the case of the Blazer, four-wheel drives are the norm and two-wheel-drive Blazers, introduced in 1970, are unusual. For restoration, it should also be noted that the door and window cranks were slightly longer due to the molded plastic door panels, and the vent windows were now secured with a single screw on the inside of the door, thus differentiating it from the 1971 model year.

power steering and brakes. It is a Custom Deluxe 10. I like to go to car shows and I alternate vehicles to take to shows,” laughed Merlin. The trim levels were rearranged on GMCs, with the Custom now being the lowest level (the Deluxe being dropped) and the Sierra and Sierra Grande becoming separate trim levels at the top of the lineup rather than option packages as before. In 1971, the front brakes on all light-duty trucks were switched from drum brakes to disc brakes, resulting in much less brake fade under heavy use. That continued into 1972. Louis-Joseph Chevrolet was a Swiss-American race car driver, co-founder of the Chevrolet Motor Car Company in 1911, and a founder of the Frontenac Motor Corporation in 1916. Chevrolet worked for the Roblin mechanics shop from 1895 to 1899. He then went to Paris, where he worked for a short time

before emigrating to Montreal, Quebec in 1900 to work as a mechanic. His racing career continued as he drove for Buick, becoming a friend and associate of Buick owner Wil-

liam C. Durant, founder of General Motors. Chevrolet drove in the Indianapolis 500 four times, with a best finish of seventh in 1919.

Guest editorial

Well #%#!*&/ my luck By Arnold Malone

I swear that what follows represents my views about swearing. Mark Twain has expressed, “That in urgent circumstances, in trying circumstances or in desperate circumstances, profanity furnishes a relief that is denied even to prayer.” That view is for others to sort through. However, swearing in the workplace and in public venues is growing increasingly common. With some people, swearing is as common in their speech as the word “the”. Too frequently it is used when nothing is urgent, desperate or trying. It is just an unfortunate speech habit; a spillage of lazy talk. Every culture has agreed upon words that are intended to shock or offend and are considered to be taboo. Most often these words deal with body excretions, religious attacks or sexual activity. On rare occasions, we are elevated by speech that is delivered with such precise, articulate and descriptive images that it uplifts the speaker’s command of language to the level of beautiful prose. I have witnessed such wonderfully delivered language. Gratton O’Leary, the once editor of the now defunct Ottawa Journal and a Canadian senator who was a renowned expert on constitutional law, was one fine example. He could mesmerize an audience with his exacting use of words. For those people who sprinkle swear words throughout nearly every sentence–perhaps with the hope of appearing strong–the result is sad because these very persons are often viewed by the majority as weak, boring and dumb as a turnip. Swearing does not elevate, it diminishes. Most of the time it is not descriptive. When a single word can be used to describe how tired you were, how fast you were driving, your opinion of the person in the approaching intersection, the noise caused by the collision, how mad you were, what you told the other driver, your opinion of the police, the stupidity of the court and the cost of repairs, then that word is not much of a word. It is nothing more than a list of nondiscriminate sounds. The English language has the capacity to elicit perfect prose. It can, when used properly, cause the mind to capture imagery that is denied to television and photographs. Words can be powerful pictures. In fact, it is difficult to think without words. Attempting to think by using a stream of swear words is utterly useless. Persons who swear without end are witless yet wanting. Unable to express with clarity, they choose bombastic noise in an effort to elevated their hope for power or attention. They seek to be persuasive, but they scare only the very meek. Swearing is lazy speech. It is used by persons who do not make an effort to express themselves with the tools that language offers. History has fine-tuned how language can be used with such amazing power. A swearer mangles intent. They dumb down delivery. I started my work life when no one would arrive at the office except in office attire. Men wore suits and ties and ladies wore dresses or skirts. As dress codes became more casual, so did language. Some people refer to swearing as “colourful” speech. That is too bad. Colourful language is when words are used with such explicit description that the mind races with imagery. In the workplace, it is the leadership that sets the standard for how matters are to be expressed. A leader who does not swear is unlikely to have a pool of subordinates engaged in profanity. Then, there are swear word substitutes–you know, the kind your grandmother might have used. The ones that still fill space, but don’t transfer exact meaning. So, double darn, I better quit writing or Holy Cow, I will soon get friggin’ challenged by some cursing specialist, bye an’ the Jiminy Cricket.

The lunch at the Railway Station will be a traditional New Guinea highlands cuisine followed by a viewing and sale of artifacts at the Railway Station. “I want to share some of my collection with others and, at the same time, raise money for the Railway Station,” said Erhard. The audio visual presentation will be held at the Messiah Lutheran Church beginning at 2 p.m. “My highlight in the presentation will be focused on making a difference by becoming self reliant. To prepare for independence, we have to believe in ourselves and be ready.” Erhard explains that the school is on 60 acres of land and how the students help grow food to be selfsustainable. Tickets are available at the Railway Station, emailing canadiannorthern@ telus.net or from Erhard by calling 780-672-1629. Erhard Pinno will be sharing his eight years of teaching experience in Papua New Guinea at the Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park and Messiah Lutheran Church on June 11 beginning at 11:30 a.m. “In 1964, I went to New Guinea (north of Australia) to volunteer for about two years. I then came back to get my masters in education and teach for a year before going back to teach in New Guinea. I was the headmaster at Asaroka Lutheran High School (for 200 students) for five years,” explained Erhard. “I knew Norma and Ray Blacklock who were teaching in New Guinea at the time.” He will be discussing the movement from stone age to independence as he helped empower students and teachers to become new leaders in the independent nation. “It was a peaceful process, but not without its challenges. We had students at our school who were first generation educated. Students came from areas that had no schools before and they were some of the first ones to go through all of the grades,” shared Erhard. “The first class of students that I had in 1964 went on to become significate leaders in the business, church and government areas. Being part of this process was a privilege for me. That is what I want to share with people,” said Erhard. “With what I lacked in knowledge of the country, I made up for in desire and interest to be part of history. The downside was, I worked myself out of a job. I did my job knowing that it would come to an end. We were there as guests of the country.” In 1888, Britain annexed southeast New Guinea, which was renamed Papua in 1901. After the Second World War, Papua New Guinea was administered as one nation by Australia as a trusteeship

Riders with big bikes and even bigger hearts By Lori Larsen

First comes the roar of the motorcycle engines, then appearing down the road is a group of shiny impressive motorcycles ridden by an equally impressive group of big-hearted riders on a mission to make a child’s life more bearable. Bullying ENNS consists of a not-for-profit society of motorcycle riders dedicated to increasing the awareness of bullying and its effects among children. In 2017, Steve Enns (founder and president of Bullying ENNS based out of Edmonton area) started the Bullying ENNS initiative. With the blessing of a young bullied boy’s family, Steve drove the boy to school perched high on the back of Steve’s rather imposing motorcycle. Having received such positive feedback from not only the child, but the family, friends and many others in the community, Steve and friends completed four additional rides during that year. It wasn’t long before other motorcyclists in the area, including Camrose, got wind of the positive impact these rides had on the children who rode, their families and friends, students at the schools to which they rode , community members and even in some cases the bullies, and they started coming on board. One such rider is Camrose’s own Gordie McLean, who began riding for Bullying ENNS in 2017. Almost instantly, Gordie realized this was a cause he was drawn to be part of and, in 2019, he was invited to be a full fledged member. After taking part in several rides in Camrose in support of Camrose area children, Division 2 of Bullying ENNS was formed in 2021. “We are lucky to have a great group to work with. They are all in it for the right reason–to help the kids. It’s all about the kids we ride for,” said Bullying ENNS Division 2 president Gordie. Division 2 has completed one ride locally this year and took part in four rides last year for local children prior to becoming their own Division. With that, the dream was started and, since then, it has grown immensely. “It is apparent how these rides have empowered the bullied children,” said Gordie, speaking fondly of how one of the young ride recipients, Emmette Prost has become an honourary member. “It is all about making a positive difference in these children’s lives. Any child that has special needs,” which Gordie said applies to almost any situation, including bullying. “We want these children to know they are an important part of

the community-society, and to help build up their confidence, to know that no matter what, they always have a friend in us.” Aside from the main goal of giving these children support, the Bullying ENNS organization is hoping to bring about awareness and encourage others to stop and think about the devastating impact bullying has on these young children. “We never know who the bully is and we don’t want to know who they are. We are there to support the child with special needs.” Not only are the Bullying ENNS riders trying to raise awareness about the harm bullying causes, they are also trying to change perceptions. “We are trying to change the culture with the way bikers are perceived,” remarked Gordie. “Sometimes the perception overrides the good we do.” Seeing the smiles that light up these children’s faces when they realize there are people out there who care, like the Bullying ENNS members, makes one quickly understand that the power of good can come from all aspects of life. All funds raised by the Camrose Division of Bullying ENNS are used to assist those in need in Camrose and area specifically to support children with special needs which could be anything from physical and mental challenges to the emotional challenges resulting from being bullied. For more information on the Camrose Bullying ENNS Division 2 or if you wish to take part in a ride, contact Gordie McLean by telephone 780-878-1368 (text or call) or by email gjmpipe@gmail.com If Gordie is unable to respond, contact Kevin Dixon on his cellular phone at 780-226-5386. Information about the organization and upcoming rides is also available on the Bullying ENNS Facebook page. On June 25, join the

Bullying ENNS Division 2 members at the first annual Bullying ENNS Ride to Support Special Needs event to be held at Camrose Regional Exhibition in support of a young local girl. The event begins with a pancake breakfast (by donation) at 9 a.m. On a final note, Gordie recalled the riders were out supporting a young boy from Bawlf who was one of

five or six children in the family. “They were all there when we went to pick up the boy, and they all were smiling. “When you can make a child smile, you have done something good. But when you can make a whole family smile, you have done something great,” smiled Gordie. “And that is what we are striving to do, great things with the Camrose

Division.” Having attended three of the Camrose rides, honoured to have ridden on the back of one of their incredible bikes, grateful to be included in the good they are doing and touched to be part of making a difference in a child’s life, I have seen first hand that these compassionate riders really are doing great things.

Alberta tourism post-pandemic By Damien C. Kurek, MP, Battle River-Crowfoot

Across Canada, provincial COVID-19 restrictions are being removed as we emerge from the pandemic. We are seeing some federal mandates being relaxed, and Canada’s Conservatives are asking for the ones that are left to be removed. We are seeing a sense of normalcy return to our lives by going to restaurants without masks, attending events without proof of vaccination and watching sports in person. This week, I want to share some of the amazing tourism opportunities that exist right here in Battle RiverCrowfoot for you to try this summer. East Central Alberta is blessed with a diverse landscape which allows for a variety of outdoor activities. We have a host of lakes and rivers for boating, fishing, and water skiing, among other forms of sport. The plethora of campgrounds, parks, and land features throughout our region offers a relaxing getaway and is still in our backyard. The ways you can enjoy summertime are endless right here in Battle River-Crowfoot. East Central Alberta is Cowboy Country! Rodeos, stampedes, and bullaramas feature the best of western talent. Plus, for those who like to sit back and enjoy the music, there are a number of festivals, including big-name performances in some of our communities: at local arenas, at the Badlands Amphitheater and, of course, Big Valley Jamboree! For those who love culture and history, don’t hesitate to check out the many museums in East Central Alberta; from the dinosaurs to the history of early settlers of our region, and to the history of Canada’s military, there is always something new to learn. Plus, there are two local short-line railways that are ready to welcome you aboard. On the arts side, we have world-class and great amateur entertainment for all ages and genres, plus galleries and art exhibitions! One of the great honours I have had as your Member of Parliament is travelling to different communities and seeing the multitudes of cuisine and hospitality offered by our many restaurants. I highly encourage folks who are needing to get away to look at everything that is local. You will be pleasantly surprised by the calibre of cuisine offered in our local communities. As we stretch our legs after more than two years of COVID-19, the businesses in our communities are still feeling the pain, so please go see what Battle River-Crowfoot has to offer and support our merchants. We offer world-class hospitality and products. Don’t forget to take a look at the history, arts, and culture of our area, I promise you won’t regret it. Whether it is here in Battle River-Crowfoot, in Ottawa representing you in Parliament, or anywhere else where my duties may take me, I am always proud to come from a place that shows the best of Alberta and Canada! If you have any questions or concerns regarding this column or need assistance with a federal government program, you are encouraged to write Damien at 4945-50 Street, Camrose, Alberta T4V 1P9, call 780-608-4600, text 403-575-5625, or email damien.kurek@parl.gc.ca. Efthalia Kavgadoulis

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother Efthalia Kavgadoulis of Camrose, Alberta. She was born in Patra, Greece on April 27, 1934. Efthalia passed away peacefully on May 27, 2022 at the age of 88 years. Left to cherish her memory are her two sons Stavros (Corinna) and Evangelis; four precious grandchildren Kimon, Anastasia, Declan (Katelynn) and Keenan; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and friends throughout both Canada and Greece. Efthalia was predeceased by her cherished daughter Maria; her parents Alexandra and Yannis Mixou; as well as her three brothers Nicko, Thanatis and Yanis; and sister Maria. She will forever be remembered for her strength, her kindness, and for the fierce love and compassion that she had for her children and for all of the “extras” who lovingly referred to her as “Mama”. Her home was always welcoming to family and friends with love, and she always had a smile on her face. Her face always lit up when she spoke of her grandchildren, and she was proud of each and every one of them, and enjoyed the short or long visits in person or by FaceTime! Efthalia took great pride in raising her children and was an amazing homemaker. She loved watching her children eat her delicious meals, knowing that each bite was filled with her love. We will all miss her infectious smile, her loving eyes, her warm embraces, her passion for life and especially the love she had for her family and friends. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 8, 2022 at Weber’s Mount Pleasant Chapel with Father Andreas (St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church, Edmonton). Interment will follow at Camrose Valleyview Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Stollery Children’s Hospital, or to the Alberta Cancer Foundation – Cross Cancer Institute.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

It is up to the two adult leaders–one incapacitated by the Great War and the other haunted by the loss of his son to the Spanish Flu– to try and save the boys. “We are delighted with the opportunity of having the director of this important Canadian movie with us in our theatre, making this an even more enjoyable experience for our rural audience,” said Sharon Eshpeter of the Daysland

Public hours now open at Hesje Observatory By Lori Larsen

The summer is the perfect time to do a little stargazing into the night skies and truly get a feel for how large our universe really is. The Hesje Observatory is an ideal place to get a closer look. As of May 15, the Hesje Observatory, located at Augustana Miquelon Lake Research Station (AMLRS) in Miquelon Provincial Park, will be open for two days a week for the remainder of the summer for public drop-in observing and tours.

Miquelon Provincial Park is a dark sky preserve with very little light pollution which makes it the optimal place for an astronomical observatory. The Hesje Observatory was made possible through a generous donation by alumnus Brian Hesje, who had a wish to provide a state-of-the-art facility where anyone could come and explore and ponder a world beyond our own. Hesje’s donation allowed for the construction of the observatory including classroom space, dome, ob-

servation deck, one permanently mounted telescope and one portable telescope, and an additional crowdfunding campaign that provided funds that supported additional equipment such

as a charged-coupled device (CCD) camera, electronic filter wheel and a set of photometric filters. Aside from being an incredible asset to be enjoyed by the community, the Observatory is also a vital tool for university and community education opportunities and has tweaked a new interest in the field of astronomy. Enjoy an exciting evening adventure with family or friends during a public drop-in at the Observatory or, if later night hours are not conducive to your schedule, the Observatory will be open earlier in the evening for solar viewing through the Celestron telescope. The Observatory is also available for bookings for the in-person Stargazing and Astronomy program, which includes two hours of uninterrupted time at the observatory for groups. For more information on the Hesje Observatory or to view the drop-in schedule, visit the University of Alberta Augustana Campus website at https:// www.ualberta.ca/augustana/research/centres/ amlrs/observatory/index. html. The Observatory schedule will also be posted weekly on the Augustana Twitter page including any weather updates that may affect the schedule.

Did you know it takes a plastic bag 20 to 100 years to break down, yet it takes me approximately one minor inconvenience.

A neighbour saw me lling up a three-gallon gas can for my lawn mower instead of a one-gallon can and now there’s a rumour going around the neighbourhood that I won the lottery or got a huge inheritance. Ever since I turned 55, I’ve been wishing we could turn on subtitles in real life because I really can’t hear anything anyone is saying to me.

I keep hearing people talk about what they’re going to do when they retire. I’m going to have to work right up to lunch on the day of my funeral. I just started to do cross t. It’s where I cross my ngers and hope my clothes t.

A man gets pulled over for speeding. As the cop approaches the car, the man asks if he can get out of the car and the cop says, “Okay.” He then asks the man why he was speeding. The man says, “You see the woman sitting in the passenger side front seat? That’s my wife. You see the woman sitting in the back seat? That’s my mother-inlaw. She has been living with us for three months now, and this morning, they had a big fight. My mother-inlaw insisted we take her home and I’m trying to get her there as quick as possible before they make up and she wants to come back home with us!” The cop looks at the man and says, “Get back in your car and I will give you a police escort with lights and siren and we will get her home!”

A trucker came into a truck stop diner and placed his order. He said, “I want three flat tires, a pair of headlights and a pair of running boards.” The waitress went to the kitchen and repeated the order to the cook, wondering what the trucker meant. The cook said, “Three flat tires mean three pancakes, a pair of headlights is two eggs sunny side up, and running boards are two slices of crisp bacon.” The waitress then spooned up a bowl of beans and gave it to the customer. She then looked at him with a smirk and said, “I thought while you were waiting for the flat tires, headlights and running boards, you might as well gas up!”
