There is nothing like a lazy day on a dock just casting a line and waiting for a nibble. Camrose and District Fish and Game Association Pleasure Island is the perfect place to kick back.

Maintained by volunteers, this beautiful little gem of a place offers so much – fishing at a well-stocked pond, walking trails, making use of picnic areas, and enjoying the natural amphitheatre and observations sites, all in a serene natural setting.

Pleasure Island Trout Pond

Here are a few “fishy” facts that you may or may not have known.

The largest fish in the world is the whale shark,

which despite their name are part of the fish family because they are cold-blooded and breathe through gills that extract oxygen from water.

The smallest fish, however, is the Paedocypris, more commonly known as the dwarf minnow, which lives in the peat swamp forests of Southeast Asia.

On May 2, 1995 the bull trout was adopted as the official fish of Alberta and is one of eight species of trout found in the province. The bull trout gets its name from its large, wide head and pronounced upper jaw, similar to that of a bull.

If you are looking for a scenic place close to home to enjoy nature walks, wildlife observation and some great fishing, the Camrose and District Fish and Game Association Pleasure Island Trout Pond is the perfect stop.

Located approximately six kilometres east of Camrose on Highway 13, and one kilometre south on Range Road 195, Camrose and District Fish and Game Pleasure Island Fish Pond is a one-stop day outing for outdoor enthusiasts.

This incredible little recreation spot is brought to area residents and guests by the Camrose and District Fish and Game Association volunteer members who spend hours of their own time maintaining

and upgrading the area for everyone’s enjoyment.

According to Camrose and District Fish and Game Association president Glen Hand, the area has and continues to undergo additions and improvements in order to provide something for all visitors.

“Of course we have the very popular trout pond, consisting of 10 different fishing stations, all of which have either benches or picnic tables, which was just recently stocked with 1,400 rainbow, brook and brown trout.”

Anglers can chose from 10 different fishing spots, all of which have either benches or picnic tables, or fish off one of four floating docks or a wheelchair accessible dock.

Pleasure Island Trout Pond Continued from page 2

The area is also the home of several purple martin pairs that have taken up roost in one of the bird houses that are maintained by a group of dedicated purple martin landlords.

“We (Pleasure Island) will be hosting a tour on site of the purple martins during the Purple Martin Festival that is being held on June 18,” noted Hand.

You may also have the opportunity to spot a variety of other wildlife in the area including: snakes, deer, moose, coyotes, gophers, butterflies, dragonflies and all sorts of birds and waterfowl, including nesting geese and ducks, that you can observe from the natural amphitheatre.

Or, take a walk around one of three maintained trails, two of which can be used to let your dog run offleash.

The two-kilometre trail system not only offers a great place to take a stroll in the spring, summer and fall, but the Fish and Game Association is now exploring the use of the trails during the winter for anyone wishing to try their hand or, more appropriately feet, at snowshoeing.

“We want to encourage people to use the facility year round and the trails are pretty conducive to beginners for snowshoeing, but of course can be just hiked in the winter as well.”

The area also plays host to a number of educational tours and events including students from local area schools and the University of Alberta Augustana Campus and participants in Battle River Watershed Al-

liance summer camps and educational programs.

Vegreville hammered the Tofield Braves 17-0 on June 2 to take over first place. The Battle River Rivals edged the Camrose Roadrunners 8-7 in a close contest on the same date.

The Vegreville Blue Jays were awarded a 7-0 win over the Armena Royals, and the Rosalind Athletics shut out the Braves 11-0 on May 31.

All weekday games begin at 7 p.m. Camrose is at Rosalind, Armena at Battle River and Tofield at Vegreville are scheduled for June 14.

• Use snares, firearms, or any device to attract, stun or kill fish by causing an explosion or electrical current in the water.

• Use lights to sportfish unless the light is attached to a hook or line used in angling. This includes visible lights that are emitted by underwater cameras.

• Clean fish for transport home in a manner that is not authorized.

The regulations are effective from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023.

In order to make sure you have the most enjoyable and relaxing fishing

experience, be prepared if approached by a Fish and Wildlife Officer conducting a compliance check.

“Primary checks usually involve ensuring retained fish are of legal size and within the daily limit, and retained fish are intact to determine length and species,” noted Camrose and District Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services District Officer Lorne Rinkel.

“We also enforce bait restrictions, as they are intended to reduce fish mortality, and we will ensure that people release fish without causing undue damage, and of course we check on the number of lines in use and for valid licenses.”

Armena 4-H Beef Club report

The Armena Beef 4-H Club has had a busy few months. On March 26, we had a clipping demo at the Hay Lakes Agriplex. Members were able to bring their show animals and learn how to groom them for show day.

On April 30, it was our club show. There were two heifers, nine steers, and one Cleaver calf at the show. Khiley Bellamy won Grand Champion heifer and Brynn Burkhardt won Reserve Champion heifer.

Morgan Knull won Grand Champion market steer and Sophia Feitsma won Reserve Grand Champion market steer. Thanks to our judge Mark Lyseng and all our sponsors for a great day.

In May, our club gave back to our community by participating in Highway Clean-up, and we oiled the pew benches at Scandia Lutheran Church in Armena.

Our Camrose and District 4-H Beef Show and Sale was on June 6 and 7 at the Bashaw Agricultural Grounds.

The UFA Rural Communities Foundation is bringing back its $100,000 Community Grant Program.

COVID-19 has delayed some fundraising projects, but UFA wants to give rural communities help to reach their fundraising goals.

For the fourth year, the UFA Rural Communities Foundation (RCF) is offering up to $100,000 to ensure rural Alberta remains strong.

“We have seen the difference our grants have made to the communities and their projects,” said RCF board chair Harvey Hagman.

In the first three years, the $300,000 has helped 12 communities complete their community projects.

“We made the commitment to give away $100,000 a year for five years, and COVID-19 has shown us the importance of these grants. Our goal is to help keep rural Alberta communities sustainable,” said Hagman.

The UFA Rural Communities Foundation has committed to invest $500,000 over five years in rural communities. The mandate of the foundation is to improve the sustainability of farmers and ranchers in Alberta by improving access to funding for educational, recreational and cultural facilities and programs in Alberta.

Groups who are eligible to apply include registered charities under the Canada Revenue Agency, registered non-profit organizations who are registered with either their provincial or municipal government, and community service co-operatives. The project must be located within 200 kilometres of a UFA location and must be completed within two years.

Application forms are available online at www.rcfufa.com. Applications can be submitted until August 31. Winners will be announced in October, during Co-operative Week.
