Outdoor activities in schoolyards, in backyards, at the lake, on the streets, or the garden or in farm fields alike, have been impacted greatly this year due to interesting weather.

Various City of Camrose roadway improvements have been impacted by numerous soggy days. This season’s street and sidewalk improvements, valued at approximately $3 million, have seen minor or major timeline setbacks. Weather challenges have been a major factor in the Camrose airport resurfacing project. One of the most visible projects in this summer’s street enhancement initiative, is a complete rebuild of the service road along 48 avenue between Fas Gas and Camrose Motorsports. Over five days have been lost, thus far, on this $970,000 project as periods of extended rain have forced halts to workdays for frustrated crews.

Dolter set to release first CD By Murray Green

Local singer Travis Dolter is releasing his CD debut on July 15 at a release party in the Overtime Taphouse starting at 8 p.m. (music at 9 p.m.). “The double CD Every Song and A Story includes some of my most popular songs along with great new originals, some that no one has ever even heard yet,”

said an excited Travis. Dolter and his band will be playing a pre-release session at the same venue on July 3 to promote the historic event. He has been playing music in the area over the past few years and this will be his highly anticipated debut album. His new single “Senior Year” offers all the fun, memorable activities a col-

lege student might have engaged in over the course of four years. Travis’s selfpenned originals have a unique country sound. The proceeds from the release party will be donated to the food bank. For more information or tickets call 780-672-8880 or visit www.travisdolter.com.

Send your LETTER TO THE EDITOR to: The Camrose Booster 4925-48 Street, Camrose, AB T4V 1L7 or email it to:

Good servant, bad master This quote made me laugh out loud. I’ll tell you why in a minute. “There is no more miserable human being than one in whom nothing is habitual but indecision, and for whom the lighting of every cigar, the drinking of every cup, the time of rising and going to bed every day, and the beginning of every bit of work, are subjects of express volitional deliberation. Full half the time of such a man goes to the deciding, or regretting, of matters which ought to be so ingrained in him as practically not to exist for his consciousness at all.” ~ William James, “Psychology: The Briefer Course.” The contrast Forgetting about “the lighting of every cigar” (not part of my life), what made me laugh out loud was the contrast between James’ perspective and mine, for much of my life. In my 20s and 30s, I relished most aspects of being a teacher. But one thing I did not like was having buzzers go every 37.5 minutes to change classes no matter what was going on in the moment. Post-teaching, I relished being able to adjust the time to fit the purpose. I loved having “the time of rising and going to bed” be different every day if I felt like it. As I moved into my 40s and 50s, I tried to be intentional every day. “Mindfulness” was a big deal. I wanted “the beginning of every bit of work” to be “subjects of express volitional deliberation.” I aspired to precisely what James considered misery. The unpredictability The second reason I laughed at the quote was “the unpredictability of life.” Who would predict that, with my Attention Deficit allover-the-map mind and years of dedication to not being fenced in by routines, I would become a fan of regular systems and routines? It’s just delicious. It’s been a gradual process to realize that, the more I create routines to take care of some things to be “so ingrained as practically not to exist in consciousness at all,” the more I have time for creativity and enjoyment. Another benefit is avoiding unnecessary hassles like having to pay penalties for late submission of various forms! My takeaway: good servants, bad masters. Routines and systems can be excellent servants, if they’re designed to fit the people who use them. Routines can save time, free us from boring activities, ensure important tasks are done on time, and open time for creative expansive experiences. Routines and systems can be bad masters. For example, when I worked in community projects, I was often frustrated with bureaucratic requirements that got in the way of how communities actually work. As a government employee, I was irritated by procedures that sucked up time with no visible benefit. As a private consultant, part of my work was often to help clients find ways around organizational systems that blocked them from accomplishing the very things the organization was set up to achieve. In our personal lives, if we’re locked into certain routine ways of doing things, that can keep us from recognizing new opportunities that would enrich our lives. As a semiretired person, I relish being able to change routines and respond to spontaneous opportunities. What about you? What routines or habits serve you well? What routines or habits could be limiting or getting in your way? How do you change or eliminate routines that no longer serve? I’ve been thinking about those questions as we head into summer. Hope you find them useful too.

Mr. Vanderwoude poses some interesting questions about the root causes of inflation and seeks solutions. While it would be convenient to choose our most disliked politician as the cause … answers are complex and several major points emerge as contributing factors. Rupert Russell, in his recent book Price War$, demonstrates the role of commodity speculators and hedge fund managers as major contributors to inflation while simultaneously leading to starvation and refugee crises in developing countries. Foodstuff commodities affected by speculation for most global agricultural trade are determined in Chicago, New York, and London and by OPEC for oil and gas. Our world is governed by 24-hour electronic trading, triggered by computer algorithms of composite price indices, fits of investor “lack of confidence,” and of unregulated pools of money (more than US $7 trillion annual speculative trades

in foodstuffs like corn, wheat, rice, soybeans, plus oil and gas and minerals like copper). Speculators seek out geopolitical chaos in the world and natural disasters like crop failures that impact food production. For details, I refer you to IATP (The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy) iatp_commodities_market_speculations_nov_2008. pdf. Typically, prices for gasoline rise immediately after a geopolitical chaos like Russia’s invasion of Ukraine even though the time from oil at the wellhead to gasoline at the pump is on the order of months. Similarly, the announcement of a frost or drought or flood triggers an immediate increase in the cost of oranges or coffee or wheat. The past 50 years in Canada has seen oligopolies flourish and our Department of Consumer and Corporate Affairs has done virtually nothing to ensure competition and promote the role of small business entrepreneurs in our

economy. Major sectors of our economy are controlled by a very small number of corporations that results in price gouging. Other contributors to our inflation include (i) supply management in Canada which regulates agricultural products like dairy and poultry, (ii) the mad rush to globalization which has exposed vulnerability in supply chains, all the while ignoring issues like child and slave labor in the “free zone” manufacturing areas in developing countries. Thank goodness for the emergence of “buy local.” According to UNCTAD (the UN Conference on Trade and Development), governments around the world do not seem to have the capability nor the will to limit the commodity speculation. And why would they... taxes and royalties help governments balance budgets with little regard to the impact upon their constituents or “unfortunates” in the developing world. Lynn Clark, Camrose

Precautions reduce West Nile risk By Murray Green

Summer is here, and so are the mosquitoes. Albertans are urged to take precautions to protect themselves against West Nile virus infection. Exposure to mosquitoes brings a risk of West Nile Virus, according to Alberta Health Services. Some may carry the virus, so it’s im-

portant to avoid being bitten. Here is some good advice. Wear a long-sleeved, light-colored shirt, pants, and a hat. Use a Health Canada-approved insect repellent containing DEET or Icaridin. Consider staying indoors at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. After being bitten by a mosquito carrying West

Nile virus, humans can develop West Nile non-neurological syndrome (formerly known as West Nile fever) or the more serious West Nile neurological syndrome. You can learn more about West Nile virus and the precautions necessary to reduce risk at www. fightthebite.info or by calling Health Link at 811.

Trainer vital to players’ well-being By Lori Larsen

For anyone who has been involved in the sport of hockey, they understand the important role every member of the team/organization plays in ensuring success on the ice. One of those vital roles is that of team trainer, and for the Camrose Kodiaks league that falls on the shoulders of new full time trainer Tyler Helgeland. Helgeland will be fulfilling the full time position beginning August 1 and is excited to be a part of the fast-action, community-oriented Alberta Junior Hockey League organization. Born and raised in Camrose, Helgeland grew up playing sports, specifically basketball, he attended high school in Camrose and then went on to earn his Kinesiology Degree at Augustana in November of 2019, finishing the last semester in Norway attending the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences. “I spent six and a half months there,” said Helgeland adding that the school is known for being top in the field of sports science. While attending Augustana, Helgeland was also the trainer for the Augustana men’s and women’s soccer teams, helping him gain the experience necessary to be responsible for the wellbeing and safety of players. After graduating from Augustana, Helgeland applied for entry to masters programs in occupational therapy. Having been waitlisted he began applying for jobs in his area of expertise–kinesiology and exercise therapy–when the

Kodiaks take on Okotoks Oilers in season opener By Murray Green

The Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) announced the schedule for its 59th season, which will begin on Friday, September 16. AJHL opening weekend will feature all 16 teams participating in two regular season games on September 16 and 17. Each team will play a 60-game regular season schedule, including 16 interlock games versus the opposing division, and two games at the 16th annual AJHL Showcase. The Showcase will be held from September 29 to October 2 in Blackfalds. The showcase draws coaches and scouts from each National Hockey League team, the NCAA, as well as Canadian colleges, universities and the Canadian Hockey League. From December 11 to 17 the World Junior A Challenge (WJAC) will display talent from across the

globe in Cornwall, Ontario. The WJAC is an annual under-20 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) tournament featuring two Canadian teams and multiple international rosters. The 2023 CJHL Prospects Game will be held in January (location TBD). Players chosen to participate in the CJHL Prospects Game are selected by NHL Central Scouting and will be among the top 40 CJHL prospects heading into the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. The AJHL will host five games on Family Day in February 2023 and celebrate the holidays with fans throughout the season including games on Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day and New Year’s. Four AJHL teams have also partnered with local schools to host Hockey Hooky Games in the upcoming season to raise awareness of antibullying. The 2023 AJHL play-

offs begin March 10 on the journey to the 2023 Centennial Cup in Portage la Prairie in May. The league will implement a four-man referee system at all AJHL regular season and playoff games in the 2022-23 season. The league will also introduce a pilot program for video review on goals at several AJHL arenas across the province. The program will be reviewed at the midpoint of the season for the purpose of expanding and adapting the program. A complete league schedule is now available on the AJHL website AJHL.ca and can be exported to calendars and mobile devices. Camrose opens the season against the Okotoks Oilers at the Recreation Centre. Both games are at 7 p.m. One of the opening events will include free train rides from the Chamber express.

job for the full time trainer with the Kodiaks became available. “My girlfriend and family and friends encouraged me to apply, so I did and Boris called me, I think it was the very next day,” remarked Helgeland. That was in January and although the position doesn’t officially begin until August 1, Helgeland has already been attending Kodiaks spring training camps in an effort to get to know the team and get a feel for what his responsibility with organization will entail. The trainer is indeed a very important part of the team. In his position Helgeland will be responsible for overlooking the overall safety of the players which means, first and foremost, tending to immediate injury that occurs during play or practice. It is his responsibility to tend to minor injuries and refer players to medical professionals when necessary. “I will of course be attending all games (home and away) and practices,” noted Helgeland. “Helping players with injuries where my training allows, such as taping ankles, knees and taking care of players suffering from concussions. “People are becoming a lot more aware of concussion in sports, and that is a good thing,” explained Helgeland. Part of what he will be doing also includes educating players on avoiding situations that could result in concussion and other injury such as how to take hits. He will also be keeping a diligent eye for any signs that a player may be suffering from a concussion and ensuring the player comes out of play to be treated immediately. “I am going to take an online concussion course to learn more about recognizing, treating and preventing concussions.” If at any point Helgeland thinks a player should not be playing, it is his responsibility to have them pulled off and tend to their well being. Preventing injury is a key component of the success of all players as well, and part of Helgeland’s goals as the trainer is to encourage players to remain fit and lead a healthy lifestyle. “Nutrition is definitely a big thing for these players, staying hydrated and eating properly,” said Helgeland. Helgeland hopes to acquire his personal training certificate by next summer so he can go even further with players’ fitness training but at this point his goal is to promote fitness by encouraging players to join him working out at the gym

Tyler Helgeland

as well as educating players on proper stretching, conditioning and warm-up techniques. Part of prevention also entails the maintenance of equipment and what may be a surprise to the layman (not a hockey guru) an important part of the trainer’s job is learning how to properly sharpen skates. “I have to make sure the sharpening is even and there are no chips in the blades,” explained Helgeland who admits he was a bit nervous about the task but with practice is becoming more confident. “The players’ skates are one of the most important parts of their equipment.” Other duties will include looking after dressing rooms, maintaining stocked first aid kits, maintaining player medical history and communicating with players, coaches and Kodiaks staff on the health and welfare of players. Helgeland said that the range of injury can vary dramatically and he is prepared to deal with all types of injury some of the more serious injuries such as broken bones or serious concussions, which he hopes will be avoided, may mandate a call out to EMT or immediate trip to emergency. “We do have an emergency action plan that outlines the process to be taken,” assured Helgeland. In the beginning, Helgeland’s plan is to meet the players one on one, introduce himself and explain his responsibilities to the team and the importance of players remaining safe, fit and healthy throughout the season. “They need to be aware of their injuries and that they are not doing the team or themselves any favours if they are hurt. Playing through the pain is not a good choice.” Outside of his full time duties with the Kodiaks, Helgeland recently applied for his real estate license, which he said will be a good fit to his schedule with the Kodiaks. “I am excited to get started and put my education to good use,” concluded Helgeland, looking forward to getting the puck rolling in August.

Essential Resource By Arnold Malone

In the autumn of 1959, I began my degree in Agricultural Science at Montana State University in the city of Bozeman located in the beautiful large Gallatin Valley. On many occasions during my studies, professors made reference to the deep black soil in the valley and often asserted, “This is the second most productive package of land in the United States.” Doctors Knuti and Rodeberg often talked about farmers harvesting four alfalfa crops in a single summer. On the fiftieth anniversary of my graduation, I returned to Montana State University and witnessed a valley packed with subdivisions and acreages. The word on the street was, “The billionaires from away have ruined our valley.” Now, at the time of this writing, there is a request to destroy British Columbia’s most productive land for warehouse development; it may well be the most productive land in Canada. This property rests on sandy well-drained soil sloped to the south, produces crops significantly earlier than other properties, and supplies one quarter of British Columbia’s annual vegetable production. The land, in the Surrey area, has been market-garden farmed for more than fifty years, producing between 30 and 50 million servings of vegetables each year. This property offsets the volume of vegetables needed to be imported from the USA and Mexico. The application to build warehouses would disregard the value of local food production and the importance of having greater food security within Canada. I have an agonizing ache in my stomach when I drive toward Edmonton and see the city developing south on some of the world’s deepest black soil rather than expanding east towards the Cooking Lake moraine. The area between Edmonton and somewhat south of Leduc is on the location of the old geological Lake Edmonton, an area of silted soil from an ancient lakebed. Just north of Edmonton near Oliver, along the Manning Freeway, is a micro climate particularly suited for market gardening, but continuously threatened by development. What is so very sad is the view that soil, irrespective of quality, is a commodity to be bought and sold rather than being a resource to be maintained and managed. There isn’t a chance in the world that cities would be allowed to grow over nickel or copper deposits. Yet, soil is so undervalued. Canada was settled as an agrarian society in a peaceful time. As a result, the settlers first established in locations where the vegetation grew in abundance. So, it is no coincidence that of the cities on the prairies: Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina, Edmonton, Red Deer and Lethbridge, are all built on silted soils from old geological lake beds. Originally, out of all of Canada’s space, only eight percent was suitable for food production. Ontario Is losing 319 acres of farm land every day to urban development. This is a double whammy. We have an increasing number of people with decreasing sources for food. The 2021 census indicates that Ontario lost 600,000 acres of farmland since 2016. From the birth of Christianity, it took one thousand eight hundred and fifty years – 1,850 – for the world population to expand from 240 million to one billion. When I was born–1937–there were just two billion people in the world. Today there are 7.7 billion. In that period, the world decreased our food-growing soil by more than half, and our waters are being polluted. There are only two sources for human food: one is soil and the other is water. While we Canadians use fertile soil to back-fill for homes and factories, half of the world is carving terraces on hills in an attempt to create a growable space to produce food.

Pageant world teaches community involvement By Lori Larsen

Local Camrosian, 22-year-old Destiny Johnston is proud and excited to have been selected out of over 1,000 applicants to be a delegate of Miss Canada Globe 2022, representing Alberta and more specifically Camrose. “I started doing pageants when I was about 13,” said Destiny. “My sister started first and I was watching her and thought that it looked like fun so I thought I would try.” After a short hiatus from the pageant world and with the encouragement of a friend who had competed in Miss Canada Globe, in 2017 Destiny decided to try out for the competition herself. She applied to be part of the pageant and was called with an invitation for a telephone interview. “Then it is sent to the high board of Miss Canada Globe to decide if the applicant is a good fit,”explained Destiny. The Pageant will take place in Toronto, November 2 to 13. The first three days are dedicated to the regional assessment where contestants are tested on knowledge of makeup and hair and taught how to walk wearing high heels, then given instructions on the rest of the pageant process. “At the end of the regional assessment, they have the show featuring evening wear, swimsuit and talent.” Destiny Johnston

For the talent portion of the pageant, Destiny will be singing. When asked how long she has been singing, she smiled and replied, “Kinda almost forever. I started singing when I was young and thought ‘Hey, I can actually carry a tune’. “My go-to song is always House of the Rising Sun,” said Destiny, although she is not sure if that is what she will be performing at the pageant. “At the end of the Regionals, you get a title no matter what, so either Miss Central Alberta or Miss Alberta, and then for the next couple of days we are competing for the title Miss Canada Globe 2022.” Aside from the opportunity to represent her province and hometown area in a national competition, Destiny is excited to be able to visit a part of Canada she has never seen and meet so many other like-minded young women from across the country. While she admits that pageants have been tagged with the perception that they are all about beauty, her experiences competing has been far more and has taught her a great deal about herself. “It’s interesting to see how your confidence changes throughout the process,” she remarked adding that the more she competes the more confident she becomes, with so much in her life enabling her to put herself out there and become more involved.

“Miss Canada Globe is very volunteer oriented, it teaches us to get out in the community and help where we can. In the earlier pageants I was a lot younger so there wasn’t as much emphasis on community, but they did try to foster a sense of community within all the girls that were in the pageant.” Unlike what may be portrayed on television, Destiny said her experiences with pageants was never cut throat or a lot of drama. “That was discouraged. Everyone ends up being sisters near the end. And you always have somewhere to go visit in Canada.” With such a strong emphasis placed on volunteerism by the Miss Canada Globe organization, contestants are finding meaningful ways to give back to their communities, which for Destiny has already been something she has felt drawn to do. In the past, she has been involved with the Killam Youth Program through Flagstaff Family and Community Services, mentoring youth on Friday and Saturday evenings. “I helped in Wetaskiwin with the homeless shelter in the winter as a volunteer to cook meals and make sure the people using the shelter had a mat to sleep on.” She also spent some time at the Mustard Seed in Edmonton, a non-profit organization that cares for individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty. “That was a really big eye opener,” said Destiny. In an effort to get further involved, Destiny has reached out to members of City of Camrose council welcoming their suggestions on areas within the City that would benefit from her involvement. Outside of volunteering and participating in this pageant, Destiny is a full time nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital–just shy of three years now. “I never really dreamed of being a nurse when I was a child or anything; but discovered later that it was something I thought I would really enjoy, and I do. It is a little bit harder at times but you do what you have to do.” Based on her dedication to serving in her capacity as a nurse, but also in her spare time volunteering to help others, Destiny is already a winner.

During the June 20 City of Camrose Council meeting, council voted to adopt the The City of Camrose 2022-2026 Strategic Plan presented by City of Camrose Corporate Business planner Trina McCarroll. The Plan includes four focus areas to be implemented by city administration and council as the City moves toward the vision that “Camrose is a community where all can thrive.” The 2022-2026 Strategic Plan process was first initiated in January with the newly elected council, beginning with a Citizen Input Survey to gather input from the public on municipal services and citizens’ priorities resulting in 924 citizen submissions. The City also conducted two online citizen community conversations. All together the public engagement activity provided 8,225 pieces of qualitative data and hundreds of points of quantitative data. For full details on the Citizen Input Survey visit www.ourcamrose.ca. A Staff Input Survey garnered 119 submissions from City staff and management. After reviewing the results from both the public and staff submissions, as well as input from council members as to what they learned from citizens during their fall election campaigns, the following four focus areas for the Strategic Plan were determined. Each area of focus includes the proposed initiatives.

Landals tanks his transportation mode By Murray Green

If you happen to see an old army tank driving down the road, don’t panic. It is just Bill Landals cruising with his 1960 Daimler Ferret Scout car. “I wanted something different to drive and this tank is totally at a different level. I found this tank in Edmonton and the fella is a military vehicle restorer. We started talking about it and I ended up buying it off of him. I always wanted an armoured vehicle and there it is. Something about high maintenance, poor mileage and lots of noise just appeals to me,” laughed Bill, on his choice of transportation. “I didn’t have to do a lot to this vehicle. This vehicle was restored down in California more than 10 years ago. That fella had it for five years and then he sold it to a guy in Edmonton. He had it for five years and then he sold it to me recently (in 2021),” explained Bill. “The toughest thing is to keep the gas tank full.” It has been modified to eliminate ammunition and working machine guns and be a replica. “I’ve had a couple of RCMP pull me over and ask the same question (are the guns functionable). If I was a policeman, I would want to know more about this vehicle as well. I understand that. It is an

Former British Daimler armoured cars were exported to various Commonwealth of Nations member states throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In 2012, some were still being operated by the Qatari Army. The Daimler Armoured Car was a parallel development to the Daimler Dingo Scout car, a small armoured vehicle for scouting and liaison roles. A larger version designed on the same layout as the Dingo fitted with the turret similar to that of the Mark VII Light Tank and a more powerful engine. The prototypes had been produced in 1939, but problems with the transmission caused by the weight of the vehicle delayed service entry until mid-1941. Daimler Company built 2,694 armoured cars. The Daimler had full independent suspension and four wheel drive. The rugged nature combined with reliability made it ideal for reconnaissance and escort work.

sector used this tank in West Germany to patrol along the wall. They were used in pretty much all of the Arab countries in the 1950s and ’60s, wherever the British army went, they took these with them. This one spent some time in Northern Ireland with the Royal Tank Regiment,” explained Bill. The replica has a Rolls Royce motor. “It drives amazingly smooth. It has independent suspension on all four wheels. The vehicle weights 8,700 pounds, without me in it. The manual steering and manual brakes, but everything else is quite precise. It does better than a lot of cars I’ve driven over the years,” shared Bill. “The book says the top speed is 58 miles an hour. I’ve had this a little past 50, but the British army recommended that you don’t go past 40 unless it is an emergency. Today, I drove to Round Hill from New Norway, at 40 miles an hour. It has a shovel, pick and

all kinds of equipment, so I don’t have to worry about being stranded by the side of the road,” laughed Bill. “The driver sits in the front and does all of the driving, and the gunner sits in the back to operate

the machine gun. It’s a two man crew and that is all you are going to fit in there. No more room for anything else. It doesn’t have seat belts, but you get a safe feeling driving this vehicle.”

Question: What are the laws pertaining to smoking (cigarettes and/ or marijuana) outside the front doors of a business? Answer: The City of Camrose Bylaw (3002-18) Section 4.6 states that “No person shall smoke inside or within five (5) metres of the doorway of a place prohibited in Section 4.1”. This includes any public building or business where the public has general access to. Section 5 of the Bylaw also requires business owners to post signs outlining these restrictions, visible to any member of the public visiting those premises. As marijuana consumption is now legal, there is no distinction between tobacco or marijuana, as both products are bound by the same restrictions within the Bylaw. Have a question for the Chief? Betty Bernice Hansen

Clare “Fay” Carlson

Fay was born to Walter and Leone Edenloff on September 5, 1938. She was the second of their six children. Her first years of school were at Glen Park, which was a “hop, skip and jump” from the Edenloff quarter. In September 1947, Fay along with her school-aged siblings and classmates transitioned to the Meeting Creek School. After graduating from grade 12, Fay attended Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute in Camrose for one year, after which she applied for and was accepted in January 1957 for the School of Nursing fall class. Before Fay turned 22 years of age, she had graduated from Royal Alexandra Hospital three-year training program in Edmonton. Fay was a certified RN! This took Fay to Taber, Ponoka, Bashaw and lastly Rosehaven; her hands and heart were touched by so many people through her nursing years. Fay married Sture Sebastion Carlson at Bethany Lutheran Church in 1961, and they began a partnership on their land east of Meeting Creek. In 1962, their son Arne Sture was born, giving Fay so much happiness. Years later, after moving to Camrose, Fay and Sture divorced; it was at this time Fay grew her first set of wings, and on June 16, 2022, she grew her second. She was predeceased by both her parents and her sister Helen. Cherishing her memory are her son Arne (Roselle) Carlson; sisters Marie (Wolf) Kirchmeir and Pat (Emile) Blais; brothers Peter (Barb) Edenloff and Ivan (Maryann) Edneloff; special niece Helen Nielsen (Ken Frisch); Fay’s special friend John Harrower; as well as three chosen grandchildren Shawn (Jay) Nielsen, Candice (Evan) Reinbold and Holly (Kyle Niehaus) Nielsen; nieces and nephews, including the Great Ones and the Grand Ones; close friends and distant relatives. Memorial donations may be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, Bethany Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund, or to the charity of one’s choice. The family of Clare “Fay” Carlson wish to thank all healthcare persons who cared for her through her journey, staff at Camrose St. Mary’s Hospital and Red Deer Regional Stroke Rehabilitation Unit. Thank you so much to all the friends and family who travelled to visit Fay – those days she loved! Thank you for the cards, flowers, prayers and donations made. The family appreciates each and everyone of you. Also, thank you to Weber Funeral Home as well as Brian Krushel, Chaplain at Rosehaven, Camrose.

July 25, 1929 ~ June 27, 2022 Our world is forever changed by the sudden passing of our Mom, Grandma, Auntie and Friend. Betty was born on July 25, 1929 at Viewpoint (Dried Meat Lake area) to Walter and Talitha Jones and passed away June 27, 2022 at the University Hospital in Edmonton one month short of her 93rd birthday. She married Theodore (Ted) Hansen of Hay Lakes on October 31, 1948 and moved to the Hansen Family farm and became a farmer’s wife. There they were blessed with five children – Carol, Donna, Ted, Lorraine and Tim - and it is where she resided until her passing. Betty was an integral part of the St. Joseph Lutheran Church for more than 70 years, participating in the many activities such as the well-known turkey suppers and bazaars, quilting, baking and cooking - always there to help. Her lefse was sought after by those who attended the Annual Bazaar. In the early days, her and Dad were often asked to sing duets for various special occasions. Of course, anyone who knew Betty knew if you stopped by for a visit there was not a chance that you were leaving hungry. She was always a ROCKSTAR in the kitchen and you might just get in on a game or two of YAHTZEE. A great pride of hers was the ability to maintain her independence as she drove her GMC Envoy right up until the very end. Family was everything! She loved having her family around, birthdays, Christmas, reunions or just a random visit, she would enjoy every minute. For her kids’ birthdays she would bake her famous Gemise birthday cake and make sure we were celebrated. She leaves to cherish her memory, Carol (John) Zerkee of Hay Lakes, Donna Jacobs of Stettler, Lorraine Hansen of Camrose, Ted Hansen of Hay Lakes and Tim Hansen (Sandra Romaniuk) of Hay Lakes; grandchildren Dale (Chelsea) Tomaszewski, Gina Tomaszewski, Terine (Derek) Forrester, Penny (Scotte) Titus, Melissa These (Greg Soltys), Russell (Leanne) These, Matt (Amy) Hansen, Heather (Justin) Rusnak, Luke Hansen, Mark (Alyssa) Hansen, Megan (Kyle) Luhtala, Scott Hansen (Kendra Ferguson); ten great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. She is predeceased by her husband Ted; parents Walter and Talitha Jones; brothers Harold, Lewis and Donald; sisters Pearl, Evelyn, Barbara, Agnes, Velma and Jean; and sons-in-law Conrad Tomaszewski and John Jacobs. A Celebration of Life was held Monday, July 4, 2022 at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Hay Lakes. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to St. Joseph’s Lutheran Church, the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice. Betty’s family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for your many kindnesses evidenced in thought and deed and for being here today. It was our honor to share her with all of you. Mary Anderson

November 19, 1932 ~ June 26, 2022 Mary was born on November 19, 1932 on the family farm near Sandy Rapids, AB, to parents Maria and Petro Sarawanski. She attended a one-room school at Sandy Rapids for her early grades, then went on to high school in Glendon, Alberta. Following that, she attended McTavish Business School in Edmonton. After graduation, Mary worked at the Treasury - Dept. of National Defence – Tactical Air Command. Mary married Hampton Anderson on November 19, 1954. Their ‘little valentine guy’ arrived in 1956. Mary and Hamp farmed together in the Miquelon Lake area for forty years, retiring to Camrose in 1994. Farm life was busy with crops and ventures into cattle, hogs, milk cows, chicken and egg production. Woven into the hard work was the enjoyment Mary found in cooking and gardening. She took pleasure in watching the antics of the turkeys, ducks, peacocks and guinea fowl that wandered the farmyard. Mary made time for many walks in the woods with Guy as he grew up, pointing out flora and fauna and inspiring in him a lifelong love for nature and the outdoors. Mary liked reading books, especially her Bible. Mary began writing poetry at an early age. She quietly continued to enjoy this pastime for years to come, processing life’s joys and sorrows into verse. Mary and Hamp were active in their church community, first at Wilhelmina Lutheran Church and then Salem Lutheran Church in Kingman. Mary loved to worship the Lord and showed it in all parts of her life. She enjoyed attending church. Over the years, she regularly volunteered for church programs, including teaching Sunday School classes. Mary also attended or led many Bible study activities throughout her life, well into her recent years. Mary treasured her family and dearly missed being able to see her sisters and extended family over the past two years. On June 26, 2022, Mary left this world to meet her Lord. Left to cherish her memory are her son Guy and his wife Maxine, and her grandson Leif Anderson; sister Nell (Mike) Makar; sister-in-law Helen Sarawanski; and brother-in-law Sam Johnson. She was predeceased by her husband Hampton Anderson; her parents Maria and Petro Sarawanski; brother John Sarawanski; sister Annie (Harry) Fersovitch, and sister Elizabeth Johnson. A Funeral Service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at Salem Lutheran Church, Kingman, with Pastor Gary Aicken officiating. Internment was in Wilhelmina Lutheran Cemetery. Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to Salem Lutheran Church or Wilhelmina Lutheran Church (Cemetery Fund). To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results!

TO GIVE AWAY

Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Going on a trip. Need about four outfits. I’ve packed 35 just to be safe. My husband doesn’t always perform a full maintenance check on the car, but when he does, it’s when the whole family is packed and sitting in the car ready to go on a road trip. It doesn’t matter how old you get, buying snacks for a road trip should always look like an unsupervised nine-year-old was given $100.

As a Camrose Booster Sales Consultant…

It’s not a family vacation until someone threatens to throw a prized possession from a moving vehicle. My favourite childhood memory is someone else paying for my holidays. No one is full of more false hope than a parent organizing car ride activities before a long road trip.

You will be trained and positioned to professionally represent all services provided by The Camrose Booster:

Parents don’t really go on vacation. They just take care of their kids in a different place.

Beautiful Daysland home

I thought I wanted a career. Turns out I just want a paycheque to fund my holidays. It’s not a family road trip without the instant regret of taking a family road trip. Just heard someone asking for directions in a gas station like our forefathers did. My husband suggests that I sleep when we take road trips, but then who would give him helpful information like, “The light is red!” or “That car is stopping!”? When y’all see me in my swimsuit at the beach, mind your own business. I thought we were going to die for the last two years so I’ve been snacking. I just realized the paper towels by the gas pump are for wiping away tears after filling your gas tank.

The benefits of a small community close enough to all the city amenities await you in this beautiful two-storey home located in the town of Daysland. Four bedrooms and two bathrooms on the upper level of the home offer plenty of space for your growing family, but there is more. The basement has a fully developed suite that would be perfect for an income rental or a fully contained in-law suite. Once you step inside, you will stand in awe of the grand curved staircase that anchors the front entry. A large front living room features a bayed window where you can arrange a cozy sitting area, then the living room flows seamlessly into a dining area and open kitchen. Imagine preparing meals for the family or gathering friends around the island in this wonderful kitchen– the hub of the home. Lots of counter space, a centre island with cooktop, and double ovens will inspire you to cook up a storm. Then move into the sunken family room with the chateau-like brick

fireplace to enjoy conversations or cuddling. The sunroom is another great place to gather and take in all the seasons. Make sure you take binoculars when you go on your once-a-year hiking trip so when you take frequent stops, it looks like you’re appreciating God’s creation and not fighting for your life. My husband just told me he wants a divorce. Actually, his exact words were “I think it would be cool for the whole family to live in an RV and travel the country for a year,” but tomato to-mah-to. Parents: Oh good, the hotel has a pool. Also, oh no, the hotel has a pool. First “normal” summer in two years and each day is costing $500. If you see me packing for a 10-day trip while sweating, cussing and dropping fruit snacks on the ground, just know that we’re actually just going to the pool and we will be home in about an hour. Barbecue at my house tomorrow. Bring a grill and some meat. I’ve got paper plates. Sleeping is hard in the summer because blankets are too warm, but without them, I am vulnerable to monsters. Europeans: “I drove for 45 minutes to spend a weekend in France, then stopped in Germany to visit some friends on my way home.” Canadians: “I was in southern Alberta and I drove north for 12 hours. Now I’m still in Alberta.” We’ve reached the stage of our roadtrip with children when I’m hiding in a gas station bathroom for some peace and quiet. There should be sympathy cards for having to go back to work after a vacation.
