The cast and crew were selected months ago. The set design and painting, which took place at John’s Shopmobile, looks fabulous and was successfully moved over the weekend to the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Centre. Eighties-era costumes are looking downright radical.

Songs have been sung and sung again until mastered. Rehearsals, which have been taking place three times per week at the Camrose United Church, have wrapped up.

Now it's showtime!

Churchmice Players, the local volunteer community theatre group which has become well known for perfecting popular musicals, is presenting ten evening and matinee performances. Opening night is Thursday, February 9. More details in this edition…

Brisk winter walk around Mirror Lake

On February 1, some brave die-hard walkers came out to enjoy a brisk walk around Mirror Lake during the Winter Walk Day sponsored by the City of Camrose and Walkable Camrose.

“We organized a community walk around Mirror Lake and invited schools and the community to get involved,” noted City of Camrose Community Services Department Recreation coordinator Jayda Calon. “Walking has so many physical and mental health benefits, and we want to encourage and demonstrate how this can be achieved year-round.”

Despite February 1 being one of the colder days that week, avid walkers showed up at noon, including six-month-old Ivy King accompanied by her mother Emily Sangster from Walkable Camrose, to take the trek around Mirror Lake.

Walkable Camrose is a not-for-profit local organization that exists to promote safe and healthy environments and increased mobility for all citizens.

Join Walkable Camrose on their facebook page for more information on upcoming events, tips on safe walking and the use of the extensive City trail system.

“We also encouraged schools to lead walks with their students on school

grounds and to get creative with music or decorations, or to invite students to complete the winter walk scavenger hunt we put together,” said Calon.

As temperatures start to head up again, Camrosians of all ages are encouraged to get out, get some fresh air and get physical on any of the City owned 30 kilometre interconnected, paved, multi-use trails for walking or running.

Rising to the occasion

Sometimes, when things are really tough, we rise to the occasion. We deal with the heavy things, the crisis things. And then some little thing knocks us over.

A woman once told me about the time when her family lost their three-generation farm. It was an excruciating time. During the several years when they could see the problem coming, they scrambled to fend it off, worked harder, tried one more thing, but eventually had to face their worst nightmare. The bank foreclosed. They had to leave the farm.

She said that during those years of unrelieved stress, their family held it together, kept handling one more blow, did what had to be done, and mostly managed to be kind to one another during the toughest time of their lives.

“I handled all of that,” she said. “But you know what did me in?”

“No,” I said.

“The church organist for my son’s wedding.” ***

I got it.

Once when I was terribly unhappy in my job for a large organization, I had a similar experience. The problem at work wasn’t workload, though we often had to work long hours. What bothered me was we’d had a change in leadership, and everything we were told to do seemed to violate what I thought were the organization’s core values. We were trashing trusted relationships and undoing work that had taken years to develop.

Hard work I could manage. But violating deeply-held values? No hope that I could influence what was happening? Being part of something I didn’t approve of?

That was the stuff of burnout.

As a single mom with children to support, I definitely needed to work. I was applying for jobs all over but every door seemed to slam shut.

One morning, when I turned into the alley for my parking spot behind the office building where I worked, a truck was blocking the alley.

I burst into tears.

That scared me. When I thought of things I’d overcome in my life, things I’d accomplished–and a truck blocking the alley did me in?

I knew I was in trouble. ***

Many of us are facing stressful times these days–and we have been for a few years.

Times of high stress and huge transitions are also a time when many of us are more likely to feel volatile emotions and think dark thoughts. We’re more likely to look for someone to blame, to lash out. We may manage to handle the big things, but little things can do us in.

This is a time to be attentive to our own well-being, to do the things that keep us healthy. As they say on airlines, put on your own oxygen mask first so you can look after yourself and then others.

It’s also a time to be kind to one another–as irritating as each of us and all of us may sometimes be. It’s a time when, though our first instinct may be to blast off, it will be more useful to back off and think of a mild response or a kind gesture.

Laughter is great too, if you can manage it. Some of the funniest lines I’ve heard were black humour during a dark time. (Earlier this year, my children kept me laughing in the hours before surgery. I’m sure that contributed to my easy recovery.)

This is also a time to remember the good things that are blessings in our lives. Whatever our challenges, we are still more fortunate than most people on the planet.

No magic answers to any of our stressors. No quick “feel good” solutions to our challenges. What we can do is be even more attentive and more responsible for the kind of presence we are in the world.

Kindness and laughter are catchy. ***

Augustana celebrates donors

The University of Alberta Augustana Campus held its 50th anniversary Community Awards Program to salute donors on January 31.

Students had the opportunity to meet the donors and thank them for the financial support. The dean, Demetres Tryphonopoulos, reflected on the 50-year milestone.

“On such a momentous occasion, I would like to express my personal and deeply felt gratitude to those, among you, who have contributed and continue to contribute to the success of this significant annual event in the life of this remarkable institution,” Tryphonopoulos stated. “The impact of your generous contributions to the education and training of the next generation of student leaders is welcome, noteworthy and vital.”

He explained the challenges the university has faced over the past three years. “We have also seen exciting curriculum changes and new investments in academic programming and student services right here on campus. As a result, we are emerging from the past few years with a renewed sense of opportunity,” said Tryphonopoulos.

“Every year, our students make things happen. Together, alongside faculty and support staff, they organize film series and confer-

ences; they conduct purposeful undergradute research; they build connections in our community as part of their degree; they map ecosystems in Costa Rica and help chart a sustainable future for Alberta rural communities.”

He explained the sense of goodwill in the students in their thirst for knowledge.

“I find the same goodwill among you, our community partners. You have continued to provide support, encouragement and assistance for 50 years. Together, we continue to build and cultivate a culture of excellence in the teaching, research and experiences that define Augustana’s core values. With confidence and pride in what we have achieved together so far, I look forward to our continued success in the future.”

Augustana development officer Bree Urkow shared the connection between the students and the donors. “My heart is truly full as I look out into this room and see so many familiar and friendly faces. When I started in my role at Augustana, almost 15 years ago, I never imagined standing up here tonight and reflecting on Augustana’s past and present, while celebrating the 50th anniversary,” shared Urkow.

“This remarkable milestone has only been realized because of the ongoing support of Augustana’s donor

community and the efforts of our dedicated students. The program was established in 1973 by forward thinking Camrose Lutheran College officials and community members, who created some of our long-standing awards,” she added.

Those include the Burgar Funeral Home, Camrose Booster, Andreassen Borth, Vision Credit Union and Rotary Club of Camrose. “All of these awards have been ongoing for 50 years or more, which is an incredible milestone. Many of you here tonight representing the awards are here tonight and I congratulate you on your achievement,” Urkow said.

“Over 6,000 students have been helped through donor awards/funding through the program since 1973. Over the past 14 years, and including 2022, on average seven new awards are established each year. Currently there are 226 donor funded awards that support Augustana students,” said Urkow.

“Of those, 99 are funded each year and 127 are endowed. I’m also excited to share that this week, we started a new fund and a new endowed award. Finally, about 23 per cent of students received a donor funded award this year, thanks to all of you. Augustana is the envy of the University of Alberta because of awards it receives from the donor community.”

Former Ukraine residents quick to assist Nordlys Festival

The Nordlys Film and Arts Festival will be held at the Bailey Theatre on February 17 to 19.

This year, they will be highlighting a Ukrainian made film on Saturday, February 18. It was made in 2020, a few years before the February 2022 Russian invasion. It is called The Earth Is Blue as an Orange The documentary was directed by Iryna Tsilyk.

“Nordlys is delighted every year to partner with a local organization whose great work in the community deserves to be highlighted and supported,” said Mardell Olson, one of the organizers of the festival. “The organization provides volunteers to run the coat check at the festival and our attendees become aware of the group and its work and we encourage our attendees to generously support the coat check with donations.”

This year, the Camrose Refugee Centre will be the Community Coat Check Partner at the festival. Over the past two years, several families have fled Ukraine and have since settled in the Camrose area.

If you want to take a trip around the world, you don’t have to book your next flight out of town.

The Nordlys Film and Arts Festival features cinematic brilliance from Canada and around the globe.

But there is one film in particular that is set to gather more than its fair share of attention, hitting at the personal heart strings of those affected by the conflicts in Ukraine.

The people of the Nordlys Festival are happy to have the assistance of newcomers to the community and want to support them as much as possible.

For Olena “Helen” Stavytska and Sergiy Ivashchenko, two Ukrainian heritage attendees, the opportunity to contribute to the festival is like

laying homage to the land they were since forced away from.

“They bombed Nykolaiv for six or seven months. It’s quite difficult, but we need to explain to people what is going on in Ukraine now,” Helen said.

Festivals like Nordlys bridge the gap between cultures and use arts and entertainment as a means of spotlighting issues like the Ukrainian crisis. In keeping with this spirit, Helen felt that it became a call to action to spread the message.

“I feel like we need to do this – to tell people about what’s happening in Ukraine. I decided to come to Camrose because my husband’s sister and her husband and her child live here. And also my in-laws came here,” Helen said.

She is from Odessa, the southern part of Ukraine, a volatile area where her husband lived and worked until coming to Camrose.

As for Sergiy, a former dental surgeon from Ukraine, he now resides in Camrose, along with his wife and two children.

He lived in Zambia for almost two decades, working as a head of orthopedic surgery and when he decided to head back to Ukraine, the war had broken out, preventing him from ever revisiting his home land. Currently, his brother and sister-in-law are experiencing the trauma of war-torn Ukraine.

“I have relatives in Kiev and in the same cities under attack; my family decided that Canada is the best because it has a lot of opportunities for our children,” he said.

Ukraine is known for art galleries and cinemas. Helen recently took in the show Malanka in Camrose. “We have the biggest opera in Ukraine. It’s always a big event to go there. Ukrainian music and dances and costumes make me feel at home,” she said.

Nordlys, which is entirely run on volunteer commitment, hopes to reach its Ukrainian audiences and support them in the efforts toward resettlement.

The Camrose Refugee Centre was founded five years ago in order to support newcomers to Canada who have settled in the Camrose area. It is an ecumenical organization which operates under the umbrella of Messiah Lutheran Church and provides support to newcomers in various ways including the provision of furniture and household goods, assistance with forms and applications, funding for youth arts and athletic programs and ESL support. Since April of 2022, between 45 and 50 Ukrainians have arrived and assistance has been provided in the form of airfare, initial rental costs, and food allowances.

“Approximately 15 apartments have been furnished during that time. We hope to be able to continue our support of newcomers from all cultures and are blessed to have them choose our community as their home,” said Yvonne Myrehaug, of the Refugee Centre.

The movie reflects Krasnohorivka, a town on the front lines of the wartorn region of Eastern Ukraine. While the outside world is made up of bombings and chaos, single mother Anna and her four children are managing to keep their home as a safe haven, full of life and light. Every member of the family has a passion for cinema, so it feels natural for them to shoot a film inspired by their own life during a time of war. The creative process raises the question of what kind of impact cinema might have during times of disaster, and how to picture war through the camera’s lens. For Anna and the children, transforming trauma into a work of art is the ultimate way to stay human.

Nordlys Festival returns in person

It has been three years of anticipation for the return of the Nordlys Film and Arts Festival “in-person” event, and the volunteer organizing committee is excited to be able to once again welcome attendees back to Bailey Theatre on February 17 to 19.

True to the Norwegian meaning of its name “northern lights”, the Nordlys will once again bring a show of brilliance to the theatre and shorten the long days of winter with entertainment and a much needed social outing.

the 2022 UK/France comedy/drama film Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris

After a supper break at 5 p.m., the entertainment continues with the 2021 Canada drama film Hands that Bind, directed by Edmonton director Kyle Armstrong, produced by Blake McWilliam, showing at 7 p.m. Guests will be in attendance.

“It is always such a joy to see how quickly our attendees become a community for the festival weekend,” said Nordlys Film & Arts Society president Mardell Olson. “I think because everyone has the shared experience of watching the same films, they find it easy to talk to one another and get acquainted. It has been three years since we have been able to gather in person, so I am expecting this year to be quite the reunion for our regulars and a magical experience for anyone new to the festival.”

The 2023 Festival promises to deliver great entertainment in a three day lineup as seen in the schedule below.

The Friday, February 17 event begins at 6 p.m., with the cocktail hour, black and white attire (casual, formal or fun) accompanied by Hartman and Olson jazz music.

Opening Ceremonies take place at 7 p.m., with Steven Hansen as the Master of Ceremonies.

The shows begin at 7:15 p.m. with The Men’s Room, a 2018 Norway film.

After a short break at 8:45 p.m., listening to Stephen Olson pluck away some rockabilly tunes, enjoy the last showing on Friday with the 2022 Canada film, Riceboy Sleeps at 9:30 p.m.

Saturday, February 18 events begin at 12:30 p.m., with The Earth is Blue as an Orange, a 2020 Ukraine film.

Enjoy a break beginning at 2 p.m., with the singing duo Neil and Lana.

At 2:45 p.m., come back together in the theatre for

An interlude at 9:30 p.m. will have attendees tapping toes and smiling to the musical performance of Leslie Ayuneye, then back for the final showing of the evening, a 2020 France comedy/drama film, The Big Hit at 10:15 p.m.

Round up the weekend event on Sunday, February 19, beginning at 12:30 p.m. with an 1955 drama film from India Pather Panchali, with special introduction by Trond Trondsen.

After the final Cafe Voltaire at 3 p.m., enjoying the vocals of Deanna Didriksen, accompanied by Erik Olson on piano, guests will return to the theatre at 3:45 p.m. for the 1991-2022 Canada film, Animation of Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis

There will be a supper break from 5 to 7 p.m., when attendees will return for the final showing of the 2019 France romance/drama film, Portrait of a Lady on Fire

A fabulous weekend of viewing incredible cinema will wind up with the Closing Ceremonies at 9 p.m. on Sunday, February 19, when attendees will once again have a chance to vote for the winner of the Pretty Hill Award.

“Our Nordlys board and committee members, (18 of us in all) have been working hard to prepare for Nordlys 2023 and are beyond excited to welcome everyone back to the Bailey Theatre,” remarked Olson. “We are also grateful for the generous contributions that we have received from our sponsors. Camrose would never be hosting this unique event without the passion of our volunteers and supporters.”

For more information on the Festival events and complete details on the featured films visit www.nordlysfestival.com.

Junior teams hosted hoops

9 basketball teams are back in full after taking some time off for exams.

“Our Grade 9 girls won their second tournament of the year at the St. Augustine invitational in Ponoka. Our junior basketball teams hosted our last tournament of the year February 3 and 4,” said athletic

director Graeme Thain.

“Both junior teams also have a number of league games to go before their championship weekend in Red Deer at the end of the month. Both senior basketball teams have had some adversity with injuries over the last few weeks, but are hoping to be healthy by the end of the month, just in time for playoffs.”

A strong credit score is an undeniable asset for consumers. A strong standing in the eyes of potential creditors can save consumers money on relatively short-term expenses like vehicles and long-term purchases like homes.

Consumer credit is so influential in the lives of the average person that it pays to have some knowledge of what it is and how individuals can use it to their advantage.

Consumer credit is typically issued by banks and retailers. One common question consumers have is who owns credit cards, which are among the most recognizable and widely used forms of consumer credit. Many credit card companies, including Visa, are now publicly held companies after years of being owned by banks.

A credit score is a three-digit number which represents an individual consumer’s credit risk. Credit risk refers to the

likelihood that a borrower will pay their bills on time. Scores are typically between 300 and 850, and the higher the score, the more creditworthy and less risky a consumer is in the eyes of creditors.

and these include payment history, credit utilization ratio, which is the amount of credit used versus the total available credit, types of credit accounts a consumer has. This includes revolving

lower a consumer’s credit score).

Three different consumer reporting agencies determine credit scores. That’s why it’s not uncommon for a single consumer to have three different scores. A host of variables are considered when determining a credit score,

credit accounts, like consumer credit cards, and installment accounts, which include mortgages and auto loans, credit history length and frequency of credit inquiries (numerous inquiries in a short period of time generally

Credit scores are so significant because they can cost or save consumers a substantial amount of money. Consumers with poor scores, which are generally considered scores between 300 and 669, may not be eligible for auto or mortgage loans and may only be able to secure credit cards with high interest rates. By contrast, consumers with scores considered very good to excellent (740 and above) generally get more favorable interest rates on sizable purchases like cars and homes, which can save borrowers tens of thousands of dollars over their lifetimes.

Managing credit is a vital component of financial planning. Knowing the basics to consumer credit can set individuals on a sound financial path.

How financial planners can help

Financial planners can help people create effective long-term financial plans, and they also can be vital resources for people who need help managing their money every day.

Financial planning and retirement go hand in hand. Without effective planning, many people would never be able to retire, while others might have to work much longer than they hope to. While financial planning is essential to achieve longterm goals, planning also can make it easier for people to meet their everyday financial needs.

Managing money is a big responsibility and it’s one that many people may need help with. A recent survey from Pew Charitable Trusts found that 55 per cent of North Americans spend as much or more than they earn. That’s not only compromising their financial futures, but also making daily life more stressful. Money is a top cause of stress.

Adults who are finding it difficult to manage their money on a day-to-day basis may benefit from the services of a financial planner. Financial planners can help people create effective long-term financial plans, and they also can be vital resources for people who need help managing their money every day.

Planners can look at things from an unbiased perspective. An honest assessment of monthly expenses is essential when creating a monthly budget. However, many people tend to be biased when it comes to their monthly expenses. For example, some may feel that three streaming service subscriptions are something they cannot live without. That can make it difficult to trim some of the fat from their monthly expenditures. A financial planner will begin by examining your monthly expenses and may or may not make unbiased suggestions regarding where you can save.

Planners have the time.

The average household is a hectic place. Adults with commitments at work and home often cite a lack of time as one of the reasons they aren’t more on top of their finances. Financial planners have the time to help clients save, and over time a planner can be an expense that pays for itself if families are saving more as a result of enlisting the services of a planner.

Planners have the expertise many people lack. One of the reasons people struggle financially is that it can be hard to navigate the world of investments, insurance and taxes. Planners have the financial literacy necessary to navigate those waters successfully and can help people realize both their short- and longterm financial goals.

Financial planners don’t just help people plan for retirement. Many planners are equally effective at helping clients achieve their daily financial goals as well.

Let financial planners guide your future plans.

Dool keeps Chevy Nova II in the family

owns a 1965 Chevrolet Chevy II Nova.

“The car was originally bought in Vancouver in 1965. It ended up in Alberta and I have had the car for 18 years. It was owned by my cousin, who bought it brand new. Then it went to Fort St. John and then back to Whiterock and I bought it from my aunt,” said Lloyd.

“It spent part of its life under a cedar tree, so it had a lot of damage to the exterior. This was my COVID-19 project to keep me busy,” he said.

The Chevrolet Chevy II/Nova was a small automobile manufactured by Chevrolet and produced in five generations from 1962.

“I cleaned it up, sanded it, painted it (same as original colour) and put in a couple of bucket seats in it because the front seats were wore out,” explained Lloyd.

“I just put in any seats, now I’m looking for the proper seats to put in it. I want to keep it as original as possible,” he stated.

“It has the original motor, a 194-cubic-inch with 120 horsepower. It has a powerglide transmission. When I brought it back from BC, I had better mileage than my wife got with her Topaz. It worked out to about 30 miles to the gal-

lon,” Lloyd added.

“The engine has never been opened. It only has 67,000 miles on it. I may open it up and make a few adjustments. It had 66,000 on it when I bought it, so I don’t drive it a lot, only in

FUN FACTS

The 1965 Chevrolet Chevy II and Nova were updated with cleaner front-end styling courtesy of a fresh full-width grille with new integrated headlight bezels. Parking lights moved down to the deep-section bumper, and sedans gained a new roofline. Taillight and backup lights were restyled, as was the rear cove.

The 1965 Chevy II came in entry-level 100 form or as the posher Nova 400, each in three body styles. The Nova Super Sport came as a Sport Coupe only, and its production dipped to just 9,100 cars. Super Sports had a new brushed-chrome console with floor-mounted fourspeed manual transmission or Powerglide automatic, but a column-mounted three-speed manual remained standard. Bucket seats wore textured vinyl trim, and the dashboard held ammeter, oil pressure, and temperature gauges.

An expanded engine lineup gave customers six power choices of the six-cylinder or V-8 engines; the fourcylinder was available only in the 100. But, for Chevy II enthusiasts, 1965 is best remembered as the year the Chevy II became a muscle car. Mid-year brought a more potent 283 with dual exhausts and 220 horsepower. It is possible that some Chevy II sales were lost to the brandnew ’65 Corvair, which featured sleek new (Z-body) styling along with a brand-new chassis.

the summer,” shared Lloyd.

“It didn’t look that nice until I put the paint on it. The car is coming along, but is still a work in progress. I want to put the proper seats back into it, maybe work on the dash, but other than that I want to pretty well leave it the same,” offered Lloyd.

“I’m lucky that you can still find parts that are available for this vehicle, because it is a Nova. The Nova was known for being the muscle car of the ’60s, so it had that attraction for me. If I had the time and money I would put a 427 in it, so it would be a muscle car. Everyone has a 350 in it, so I wanted to be different with a 194,” Lloyd laughed.

Nova was the top model in the Chevy II lineup through 1968. The Chevy II nameplate was dropped after 1968.

“It was a good project for me and it took me two months to sand it down to bare metal. I put a coat of primer on it and then

painted it myself in my garage. I’m still trying to get the paint off the floor,” he said.

“This is a Canadian car, not American. The American versions have a

lot more chrome on it on the front end, but don’t have this piece of chrome in the back. That’s how you can tell the difference,” Lloyd explained. “It was a fun project.”

Operation Cold Start educates public

Camrose

(CPS) continually provides information, education and programs to help prevent residents from becoming victims of crime.

One such program, Operation Cold Start, is a province-wide initiative to help combat the high number of auto thefts that occur during the winter months.

During the week of January 30 to February 3, between the hours of 6 and 9 a.m., members of Camrose Police Service were out checking vehicles that were left idling and unattended.

CPS Sergeant Todd Steil spoke out about the program and offered residents valuable tips on how to prevent becoming a victim of vehicle theft.

“When a member found a vehicle that was left idling and unattended they would look to see if it was locked and the keys were in it,” explained Steil. “If the keys were in the vehicle and it was unlocked, every attempt was made to contact the owner of the vehicle so that it was not left as an easy target for theft.”

When the officer was able to contact the owners the officer explained the goal behind Operation Cold Start–to educate the public on the risks associated with leaving their vehicles idling while unattended, and offered tips on preventing vehicle theft.

“We are not going to totally prevent theft of vehicles,” said Steil. “But the goal is to educate the public to take as many steps as possible to be proactive to prevent vehicle theft.”

During the week of Operation Cold Start, CPS members checked on 16 unlocked vehicles left idling with the keys in it, 15 locked vehicles left idling with keys in it and there were 23 different interactions with people.

Steil said that not all the interactions were with people who had left vehicles unattended while idling, locked or unlocked; in some instances, it was just a positive interaction with a citizen to inform them of the

importance of not leaving their vehicles idling while unattended.

The officers, in all instances, stressed three main points in preventing vehicle theft, including:

• Use a remote starter or remain in your vehicle as it warms up,

• Never leave keys inside vehicles, and

• Push button equipped vehicles can still be driven without the key present.

“If you start your vehicle with a push button and you take the keys out of the vehicle someone can still get in the vehicle and drive away. The vehicle is oper-

the vehicle, once again providing education to vehicle owners on how to prevent warm-up thefts.

Tips include:

• Use a remote starter or stay with your vehicle as it warms up.

• Never leave your keys inside your vehicle.

• Don’t leave a running vehicle unattended.

• Never leave children or pets inside a vehicle.

• Use a steering wheel lock.

• Keep your vehicle locked at all times and

• Remove garage door openers from your vehicle.

Ask the CHIEF A

Question:

What are the rules for moving vehicles from the street during City snow removal or street sweeping?

Answer:

City crews typically put out signs in the days proceeding their work in the affected areas. Most residents are respectful of this, as it benefits everyone living in that area. In consultation with the City, better signage that has specific, clear instructions (i.e. No parking 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tow Away Zone) would be more impactful as it would allow vehicles to be parked in front of homes overnight, rather than a blanket “No Parking Zone”. With the increased clarity, education and awareness campaigns, those who continue to disregard “No Parking” restrictions would be liable to ticketing and towing under the Rules of the Road (Stop/Park where prohibited by Traffic Control device) Section 44n–$81 fine and possible towing.

Shoeboxes bring joy

Despite the challenges posed by inflation, shortages and the conflict in Ukraine, Canadians lovingly packed 415,072 shoeboxes with toys, hygiene items, school supplies and many other items during the Samaritan’s Purse shoebox campaign, Operation Christmas Child.

That’s an increase of more than 1,000 shoebox gifts over 2021’s total.

able until they shut it off.”

In most instances the vehicles the members found idling were left outside of the vehicle owner’s place of residence or at a gas station.

“When I have spoken with people that have a history of auto theft, they have told me that gas stations are the perfect target to find a vehicle left unlocked and idling. It’s a crime of opportunity.”

In the situations where a CPS member was unable to contact the owner of a vehicle left idling unlocked, the officer would leave an Operation Cold Start pamphlet on the windshield of

As a further incentive to encourage preventative behavior, CPS officers randomly handed out some antitheft devices (locking steering wheel clubs) provided by the provincial government, to people they did have interactions with regarding the risk of leaving vehicles idling while unattended.

With a goal to educate the public, Operation Cold Start is one more way Camrose Police Service engages with the citizens of Camrose to collaboratively take away opportunities from criminals, prevent crime and make Camrose a safe community for everyone.

Joseph “Joe” Michael Orcheski

September 13, 1944 ~

January 30, 2023

Joseph Michael Orcheski was born August 31, 1944, but was not registered until September 13, 1944. His story regarding this discrepancy is that his mother Paulina was stooking hay when he was born and left him by a stook, but could not remember which one for two weeks. Joe is the ninth child of ten, born to Nicholas and Paulina of the Round Hill area. He took all his schooling in the Round Hill area.

Joe was working in Vancouver at the Simon Fraser University when he met his love, Georgina Foss. They were married in September 1968.

In 1965, Joe took over the family farm from his parents. In the spring of 1983, Joe decided he wanted to do something different from grain farming and raising cattle, so he and Georgina went looking and came home with six bison heifer calves and two bison bull calves. This began a 40-year career of raising bison; stressing quality over quantity, which he did very well. Joe had over 100 trophies and banners showcasing his success. He showed at bison shows and sales all over Canada and the USA. He also sold trophy bison across Canada, the USA, and into Germany, and there are still a few bison on the farm today.

Joe and Father Larry Pederson attended school together, were altar boys together, and played hockey together.

Joe is survived by his wife of 54 years, Georgina; his brothers Stanley (Linda), Louis (Carol), Casmer and Philip; sisters-in-law Jane Orcheski, Eileen Staal and Noreen Foss; brothers-in-law Arnold (Ria) Foss, Harvey (Doreen) Foss, Ken Foss, and Larry (Karen) Campbell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joe was predeceased by his parents Nicholas and Paulina; father and mother-in-law George and Grace Foss; four sisters; one brother; and many other family members.

Robin Charles Chandler

On February 3, 1948, Robin Charles Chandler was born to Charles Grandcourt Chandler and Rachel Jean Chandler. Robin had one sister, Rachael Chandler. Robin was a loving father and farmer. He was born and raised on his father’s farm in England. When that farm was suffering financially and going into foreclosure, Robin bought into that farm partnership at the age of 16. He later purchased Round Hills Farm before moving to Canada to carry on with his passion in rural Alberta. Robin’s love of farming was in and of itself a beautiful thing to behold.

Robin’s passion in life was nature. He was one of those rare and gifted individuals who could find beauty in the ordinary, finding joy in the most unexpected of places.

He travelled the world to marvel in its splendour. After returning on a trip from the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania, which many have seen in pictures and movies as being famous for the great migration, Robin would spend hours talking not of the amazing creatures he saw, but of the type of grass that grew and developed there, which grass gave life to the world as we know it. Few people have the insight required to notice the significance of a blade of grass, fewer still to see the beauty to beholden in those blades.

Robin married Anne Phipps, and they had three children Rosemary, John, and Harry.

Robin was a stoic, who showed his love for family and friends not through the expression of words or minor sentiment, but through the rare quality of consistent, disciplined, and strong action. If you needed someone to pick up the phone on the first ring, Robin would do it. None of his children know the words on his voicemail because they have never heard them. This small act, carried out consistently over decades, is only a small example of the love and devotion Robin had for his family. Once, when John missed a flight to Kelowna, Robin started the 10-hour drive to get him home without hesitation or question. Distance was never a problem for him, as he would fly to anywhere in the world just to have dinner with Harry make sure he was okay. Despite being recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Robin would still go over to Rosie’s house every day to check on her and newborn baby Frankie, and even visited Rosie during this time in the hospital when she had her gallbladder removed. Robin was always there for his family in every single way.

Robin was a devoted and loving grandfather. When visiting, Robin would often be found on the floor with his grandchildren, reading to them and telling stories about farming and life when he was younger. Robin bought ponies for his grandchildrens’ birthdays and Christmas presents. Robin loved horses more than people, and to those who knew Robin, they would see the real gift he was giving was not the pet, but the value that comes from the relationship between the pet and the person and the love between the person and animal. This endowment he bestowed on all of his children, with whom he regularly rode for years.

On January 22, 2023, Robin passed away peacefully under the exemplary care of the staff at the St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose, after an evening sharing stories with his children, and with his daughter by his side. We are all so grateful that we were able to spend time with him while he was here.

A celebration of life will be held at the family farm at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

The family of the late Donald Zimmer

…would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who reached out when Dad passed away. All the cards, food, visits, messages, flowers and any other extension of condolence were greatly appreciated.

Thank you to Father Daniel for the beautiful service and comforting words. Thank you, as well, to the lovely ladies of the CWL, who served an amazing and beautiful lunch following the service.

Thank you to Bart and his staff at Burgar Funeral Home for your professionalism, knowledge and compassion with planning the funeral and other details.

Thank you to the amazing home care and health care aides who cared for Dad at Providence Place – you are a truly wonderful group that allowed to him to stay in his home until the end.

Finally, thank you to anyone we may have missed. Please know every gesture of friendship did not go unrecognized.

Rhonda lived in the Camrose area all her life and had many friends with whom she loved to spend time. Rhonda loved to travel, go out dancing, spend time at the parks, camping, and just enjoying time with her grandkids from her extended family.

Rhonda leaves behind her common-law husband of 17 years, Paul Behrens; mother-inlaw Gail Bedard (Mom Gail); three sisters-in-law Sheri Moes, Sylvia Behrens and Shantelle Bedard; stepson Steven Behrens, stepdaughter Crystal Pratt; and five grandchildren, ages 6 to 17, Bree, Brody, Carly, Hailey and Carter. They all are going to miss their Oma Rhonda and the times they shared.

My (Paul) final message to you…

What hurts the most is that God took you away from me too early as we didn’t get to marry on May 8, 2023, as that was a dream of ours. No more good morning and good night kisses, but you will always be my wife, Rhonda, even without that paper.

Rhonda, l love you and always will. You were my rock and I was yours to lean on.

You will never be forgotten as you will always be that pain I feel in my heart each day with you not by my side. Until we are together again, R.I.P. my Love.

Rhonda, if my tears could build a stairway, and if my memories of you/us, could build a lane, I’d walk right up to Heaven and bring you home to me again.

I love you, Rhonda Hauser.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results!

Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Crush wait for playoffs

Camrose Crush outscored the Bonnyville Pontiacs 10-7 to nail down second place and receive a first round bye in the North Central Hockey League playoffs, January 28.

The President’s Cup winning Lacombe Generals and second place finishers Camrose will now wait for the winners from the quarter final round.

RJ Reed again led the charge on offence with a goal and four assists in the home victory.

He started the scoring just over a minute into the game, but Bonnyville stormed back with three tallies to lead 3-1 after 20 minutes.

Camrose then notched four straight markers to regain the lead. Cullen Bradshaw scored a shorthanded goal. Maverick Lynes tied the game, Brett Njaa and Landon Oslanski added power play tallies in the middle frame. The Pontiacs added a goal to close the gap to 5-4.

In the third, it was end-to-end scoring action. Mathew Hillyers started it off for the Crush. After two Bonnyville goals, Bradshaw, Oslanski and Cole Gibson connected to give the home team a three goal advantage. Bonnyville replied, but Dalton Reum put the game away in the last minute with a goal.

Goalie Connor Dobberthien stopped 54 of 61 shots he faced in the Crush net. Camrose fired 42 shots at the Bonnyville netminder.

Kodiaks ground Eagles twice

Camrose Kodiaks edged the Canmore Eagles

2-1 in what appeared to be a playoff-style of game in Alberta Junior Hockey League action, January 29.

Kodiaks opened the scoring when Ty Hodge connected on a play in the first period.

The teams exchanged goals in the middle frame. Levi Carter garnered the game winner on the power play. Neither club could bend the twine in the third period.

Kodiaks goalie Freddie Halyk turned away 35 of 36 shots. Camrose fired 34 shots at the Canmore net.

Camrose accomplished a feat not very many teams have done in the past couple of years. They beat the Brooks Bandits 4-3 on January 28.

After a scoreless opening period, Brooks gained a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes. Captain Callum Gau netted a man advantage tally for the Camrose goal.

The third period belonged to the Kodiaks as they recorded three goals on four shots. Ethan Short, Alexander Bryson and Noah Alvarez, on a power play, scored for the Kodiaks.

Goalie Halyk stopped 24 of the 27 shots he faced. Camrose recorded 21 shots on goal.

The Kodiaks ended the month with a two game winning streak as they headed in February.

Camrose hosts the Drumheller Dragons at 7 p.m. on February 7, Drumheller again at 7 p.m. on February 11, Whitecourt Wolverines at 7 p.m. on February 14, Brooks Bandits at 7 p.m. on February 16 and the Lloydminster Bobcats at 7 p.m. on February 25.

Camrose hosts the Olds Grizzlys at 7 p.m. on March 2 and the Canmore Eagles at 7 p.m. on March 4. That concludes the regular season. Playoffs will likely begin the following weekend. Bear facts

BRCF funds supports summer camps

The Battle River Community Foundation awarded grants to the Camrose Association for Community Living for summer camp totalling $13,800.

One grant, of $12,000, from income earned in the Linton and Debbie Falk Community Youth Fund, the Dave Jacobson Memorial Fund, the Ellard Dilworth Fund, the Rostad Family Fund and the Foundations Community Funds, was in response to an application by the Association for support of three streams of summer day camps.

The three different streams of summer camp include: a Kandu Camp for children, a Leaders in Training Camp for youth and a Travelling Kandu Camp for children located in rural communities throughout the County

of Beaver, Flagstaff and Camrose.

The camps offer a wide variety of social, recreation, physical fitness and craft activities for all children, including children with special health and development concerns.

“CAFCL strives to provide a safe and welcoming environment where all children and youth can be themselves,” remarked CAFCL chief executive officer Robin Good. “Our fully inclusive camps help to highlight the strengths of our campers though new experiences and meaningful connections with one another and the camp staff.

Hannah Wispinski and attendee of Kandu Summer Camp for several years shared her thoughts,“l liked the cool themes each week, the fun activities and the great field trips.”

Another grant of $1,800, from income earned in the Ricky James Hillaby Memorial Fund, a Donor Advised Fund, was also awarded in support of the Association’s summer camp programs.

“CAFCL is beyond grateful for the support of the Battle River Community Foundation,” thanked Good. “With their support, we are able to remove barriers related to finances for families. Being able to provide a camp at a low cost, as well as providing full subsidized camp for families in need, remains a priority. We believe all children deserve to experience the joys of Summer Camp.”

The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support organizations in East Central Alberta, which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future.

Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations.

Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $8,679,700 to support charitable activities in the Battle River Region.
