Flagstaff Players set to perform stage show Guards! Guards!
By Lori LarsenFor close to 60 years audiences have been entertained by performances of the local Sedgewick not-for-profit community theatre group, Flagstaff Players, staging annual (sometimes bi-annual) shows.
“Flagstaff Players got its roots in the early 1980s, when a group of Sedgewick teachers and friends came together to stage plays for the community,” said Flagstaff Players member and upcoming production of Guards! Guards!, stage manager Michelle Edey.
The productions are most often in the form of dinner theatre with local caterers entertaining attendees tastebuds, while local talent takes care of the rest.
Along with a repertoire of productions that feature mostly adults, the Flagstaff Players also choose projects that involve children of all ages and have been known
to stage the occasional vaudeville production.
“Sort of The Carol Burnett Show meets The Muppet Show ,” said Flagstaff Players member and front of house coordinator Brenda Grove.
Cast members range in age, depending on the performance, between seven and 70 years and include members of the Flagstaff Communities, as well as Viking.
“It is our desire to spend our recreation time creating entertaining performances for our fellow small-town citizens to enjoy, something different from running to the city to watch a movie,” said Grove.
Some of the past productions include Agatha Christie’s, And Then There Were None ; W.O. Mitchell’s, Black Bonspiel of Wullie MacCrimmon ; A Wonderful Life; A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens; Arsenic and Old Lace ; a Sherlock Holmes
adaptation of Conan Doyle’s famous book, One Foot in the Grave and EB White’s children’s story Stuart Little .
“We have had anywhere from 50 to 100 people attend each of our productions,” said Grove. “They come from all over the province to see our performances.”
Flagstaff Players’ upcoming production of Terry Pratchett’s “Guards! Guards!” is set to run, May 5,6,12 and 13 with doors open for the dinner at 5:30 p.m. or for show only at 6:30 p.m. at the Sedgewick Community Hall.
The story follows a plot by a secret brotherhood, the Unique and Supreme Lodge of the Elucidated Brethren of the Ebon Night, to overthrow the ruler of their city, Ankh-Morpork, and install a puppet king. Using a stolen magic book, they summon a dragon to strike fear into the hearts of the citizenry. Chaos ensues.
“There are dragons (one even flies), dwarfs, brave soldiers, craven rulers, some magic, and an Orangutan, who happens to be the Librarian at the Unseen University,” described Edey.
The Guards! Guards! production involves 38 people including six elementary school children, 11 junior/senior high school students and 21 adults hailing from all walks of life.
“We have several folks with special needs, all comers are welcome,” said Grove. “We make it work no matter who you are.”
For the upcoming production Guards! Guards! Emily Kennedy is the director, Josey Field is coordinating costumes, makeup and hair design, Michelle Edey stage manager; Kari Fox-Newby is assistant and artistic director and set designer, Mary Jane Hedeman is the creative director, Grove is in charge of front-of-house
and Alica Bergman, a student working towards a certificate in digital marketing is assisting with marketing.
“We are truly a team,” said Grove. “Everybody pitches in as much as they can to every part of the production. We are a passionate group that not only produces quality drama productions but promotes creativity and community involvement for people who may not have other opportunities like this in a rural area.
With approximately 40 years of coming together for a common goal of entertaining people in and around Flagstaff and Camrose County, the Flagstaff Players looks forward to “staging” even more entertainment in the future.

The results of a public opinion survey, conducted by Calgary pollster Janet Brown for Alberta Municipalities in late January of this year, confirm that most Albertans see no reason to replace the RCMP with a new provincial police service.
A resounding 85 per cent of respondents said that if the Government of Alberta insisted on going ahead with the creation of an APS, the matter needed to be put to a provincial vote.
Sixty-six per cent of those surveyed thought the provincial government should spend its time, effort and resources on community service supports for Albertans who are marginalized and struggling with homelessness, addictions and mental health issues.
There was also broad support for increasing spending to improve current policing efforts in communities across Alberta and improve the provincial justice system.
“The results of this survey paint a very clear picture,” said Alberta Municipalities president Cathy Heron.
“Albertans are simply not interested in a discussion or review of community policing in Alberta that is based on political aims or recommendations from the 2020 Fair Deal Panel Report. Municipalities are interested in discussing the delivery of community policing with the primary goal of enhancing public safety.
“We strongly encourage all the provincial political parties to include public safety and policing in their election platforms. Albertans deserve to know where the political parties and their candidates stand on these important issues as they prepare to vote in the 2023 provincial election in May,” she said.
