For years, you have no doubt admired the multitude of Canadian flags which magically seem to fly on lawns in the City just before and during summer long weekends. These flags are tied to the Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak. This group of Rotarians launched the Canadian flag project as a key club fundraiser. In turn, much of the money raised is directed back to local youth.

Rotarians rely on the valuable time and assistance of Camrose #644 Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets parent support group to deliver and place flags on the properties of those who are participating in this colourful and mutually rewarding initiative.

National Paramedic Services Week

5,600 EMS staff and paramedics respond to more than 589,000 911 events each year, or about 1,600 calls each day.

Other services provided extends beyond that to include:

Some of the most traumatic times in a person’s life is when they or someone they love is in a state of medical emergency. Whether it is a child who has fallen off a bike, a person suffering a cardiac event, victims of a motor vehicle collision or one of the slew of incidents that require emergency medical attention, we are so fortunate to have dedicated, educated, experienced Emergency Medical Service (EMS) professionals to come to our aid.

From May 21 to 27, take a minute out of your day to think about and thank one of the many Emergency Medical Service professionals during National Paramedic Services Week.

According to a 2022 report, AHS EMS operates 515 ground ambulances in Alberta, plus 11 medical aircraft. Approximately

• Incident Response Paramedics (IRP), who can offer specialized care during large scale or extended incidents, such as structure fires, as well as care for patients who may have suffered from contamination, such as carbon monoxide or chemical exposures.

• Flight Paramedics provide air medical care to patients requiring immediate acute care during transfers between larger centres as well as transfers of other ill or injured patients who require movement to a higher acuity facility. Airport Paramedics at both Calgary and Edmonton International Airports also provide emergency medical support to travelers and use specially equipped Segways for rapid response.

• Tactical Emergency Medical Support (TEMS) paramedics work with law enforcement to provide immediate advanced life support care during highrisk police operations.

• Community Paramedics are specially trained to provide short-term treatment for patients in their own homes under the medical direction of Physicians and Nurse Practitioners. This can include antibiotic administration, blood transfusions, and hydration therapy.

• Emergency Communications Officers (ECOs) answer 911 requests for EMS service and initiate the EMS emergency response to the scene; they also provide pre-arrival instructions (PAIs) over the phone such as how to perform CPR or relieve a choking emergency, or assist with childbirth.

• Rapid Access Paramedics (RAP) respond on specially equipped mountain bikes to provide first response advanced life support in congested and crowded areas, such as events and festivals, where standard vehicle access may be challenging.

The dedicated work of EMS paramedics should not go unnoticed and unappreciated as citizens around the province are encouraged to express their gratitude for those who have chosen a field of work, so demanding both physically and emotionally yet so necessary.

What’s your favourite way to be of service?

I didn’t intend to pay much attention to the coronation of King Charles III. I’m not anti-monarchy. However, I do think the concept of a hereditary leadership position with no actual power is more and more irrelevant in today’s world.

Still, on Coronation Saturday I did flip to the coronation broadcast just in time to hear Charles say, “I come to serve, not to be served.”

I was hooked. I believe that he meant it.

Since that Saturday, I’ve been noodling around with the concept of service. What does “service” mean and how does serving impact both those who are served and those who serve?

What flashed into my mind was one of my mom’s favourite quotes:

“I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.”

The quote was from Dr. Albert Schweitzer, a man who left a wealthy medical practice in England to go to Africa and serve local people for the rest of his life.

My mom believed that quote with all her heart and she demonstrated it every day.

In the same vein, a Chinese saying is: “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.” ***

Serving others is not only a benefit to those who are served, it is a benefit to those who are being of service.

Serving others feels good

When you help others, it promotes positive changes in your brain associated with happiness. Your brain releases “feel good” hormones. These rushes are often followed by longer periods of calm. Helping others distracts you from your own problems. It engages you in meaningful activity. It improves your self-esteem and competence.

Serving others brings a sense of belonging

If you’re part of a group of people helping others, being a part of a team creates a feeling of belonging. It provides you with a sense of purpose. It allows you to see beyond your own experiences. It can also build a sense of camaraderie amongst team members and colleagues.

Serving helps to keep things in perspective

Serving others in need, especially those who are less fortunate than yourself, can provide a sense of perspective. It makes you realize how lucky you are. That helps you stop focusing on what you think you are missing. It can help you have a more positive outlook on things that may be causing you stress.

Serving others helps make the world happier perspective

Acts of service and kindness have the potential to make the world a happier place. An act of service can improve your confidence, your happiness and your optimism. It can also encourage other people to repeat the good deed that they’ve received. That contributes to a more positive community.

The more you do for others, the more you do for yourself

The benefits of serving others can last long after the act itself. They provide a “kindness bank” of memories that you can draw on in the future.

Of course, we intend that our acts of service to others will benefit those we are serving. But it’s quite possible that when you are of service to others, your being of service benefits you as much as it benefits those being served.

Definitely a win-win!

So, what’s your favourite way to be of service? ***

I’d love to hear from you. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send an email to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com I’ll happily reply within one business day.

ATLANTIC BATTLE

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion member Dora Grettum lays a wreath to honour the Battle of the Atlantic, which lasted from September 1939 until the defeat of Germany in 1945. It was the war’s longest continuous military campaign. Early in the war, German warships made a number of forays into the shipping lanes, aiming to catch and destroy Allied convoys. The Allies wanted to use the Atlantic to resupply Great Britain and the Soviet Union in their fight against Germany and Italy. Hitler had lost the Battle of the Atlantic, due the perseverance of individual sailors and merchant seamen who kept the ships moving.

École Camrose Composite High School (ÉCCHS)

Senior Concert Band and Senior Jazz Band recently had 37 students participate in the Senior Band Tour trip to Sun Peaks Resort in British Columbia, April 28 to 30, an experience that offered up some great learning opportunities and wonderful memories.

ÉCCHS music program bands and choirs director Graham Green said the Senior Band Tour provided the students the value of not only performing, but attending clinics.

“And a whole lot of team building.”

Roxanne Severson remarked on the experience. “This has most definitely been one of the best band trips that I have ever been on. I found that I was able to better connect and bond with my classmates.” Roxanne said that while she was also able to learn from the opportunity, one of her biggest takeaways was learning the importance of perseverance in tough times. “Having a connected team helps to be able to keep moving forward.”

While the opportunity to attend the Senior Band Tour did not specifically require preliminary qualifying, the trip was used as a warm-up for the Provincials held in Red Deer on May 15.

ÉCCHS Grade 10 student Reese Denham noted this was one of the best experiences. “I was able to develop my

skills and understand music to a new extent. I loved performing as a group and receiving in-depth help and feedback from the adjudicators.”

Outside of the hours spent learning and developing their skills, the students were able to connect with other like-minded students, not to mention develop stronger ties with fellow band members. “The memories I gained with all my friends will forever be unmatched,” said Reese. “I became closer with everyone in the band during the long bus rides, clinics, and even just waiting around in hotel rooms for the next event. The music festival was a surreal experience that I will be forever grateful for.”

ÉCCHS Grade 10 student Bailey Maccan shared thoughts about the experience. “The Sun Peaks Music Festival was a priceless experience that helped me develop and better understand my skill set on the flute.”

Bailey also commented on enjoying the in-depth work they did as sections of their band as well as the work done together as the whole band. “Spending the weekend with the band as we played and had off time to hang out together was an indescribable experience that I would not hesitate to have again.”

Green and band members were grateful for the assistance of chaperones Heather Howe, Robin Maccan and Landon Lewsaw.

Voters listen to Alberta election, local platforms

Camrose voters have four options in casting their ballot on Election Day, May 29.

In the Camrose Constituency in the Provincial Election: Jackie Lovely is the United Conservative Party representative, Richard Bruneau is the NDP candidate, Bob Blayone is an Independent runner, and Pamela Henson represents the Wildrose Loyalty Coalition.

All but Henson were at the Candidates Forum held at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on May 10.

Where do you see the opportunity for collaboration with municipal and our federal counterparts?

“Everybody talks about deregulation, but nobody tackles it. I ran my own business for decades and one of the things I noticed in the end is the intrusion by government at all levels and over regulating our businesses. I say let businesses do their thing to create jobs. I want to have a conversation with governments to get out of the way so business can create a more vibrant economy,” said Blayone.

“Danielle Smith (premier) has had conversations with the federal government about the forest fires that are happening throughout the province. There will be some funding coming from the federal government to help those families that have been devastated. Some have lost their farms, houses and businesses. We have very good relations with local municipal governments, with the City and County. I can always count on them to come to the table with me,” said Lovely.

“Over the last four years, the government has failed to establish a partnership with municipal governments. They have downloaded millions in costs to rural municipalities for the same level of

policing. Camrose County is paying $650,000 more a year for policing when four years ago they were not paying any. Government has cut infrastructure funds and made it impossible to plan long term and invest in their communities,” said Bruneau.

What sector of medicine needs the most support/growth in Camrose?

“One of the things I have discussed with Dr. Minders, our local doctor (chief of staff at St. Mary’s Hospital) is the need to get our surgical unit open for more surgeries. We are next to receive that funding. We had more surgeries in the past, we want to bring them back. We have a doctor shortage, so we have asked for a training centre in Lethbridge and Grande Prairie. We want rural people to become rural doctors,” said Lovely.

“Our needs in health care in this region is vast. It is in part with the UCP disastrous relationship with the doctors and nurses over the last four years. I’ve had a family member go through a mental health crisis this past year and I’ve learned first hand that our mental health supports in Camrose are very lacking. I’m disappointed in the UCP cuts at universities, especially the University of Alberta,” said Bruneau.

“I’m no doctor or nurse, so I turn to health experts when I want to learn something. I was shocked to understand that doctors have been silenced. We have great doctors across the province, and nurses, that have great ideas and I would like to see them unshackled so they can speak freely. We have major issues in our health care in Alberta. Let’s get together, address them and fix them. Stop talking about it,” said Blayone.

How are you addressing the gap in early intervention BUF funding (money put aside to help alleviate the adverse short-term ef-

fects of something) shifted out of kindergarten?

“We have a lot of students who have special needs in the classroom and they are not getting the help they need. Education has stagnated under the UCP with frozen funding, more students without more teachers. They need more support. We need to increase funding, need more teachers, more schools and our class sizes are too big,” said Bruneau.

“We have a catch-up to do following COVID. It really hurt our children badly. We have mental health issues going on because teachers are overwhelmed because of class sizes. These children have development delays, so it is a big issue. We need funding to solve this issue. Where is the money going to come from? That is the question. Health care is funded by $24 billion, which is the most expensive and least amount of service provided in this province. Where is that money, that is what I want to know. I want to do an audit of where that money goes. Some of that can be better used in education for an example,” said Blayone.

about our health care system. I’m proud of the work our doctors and nurses and everyone else in that sector does. We do need some upgrades, but my first act is to make sure that (St. Mary’s) surgical unit is open. I talk to people that come to Camrose for surgery. I would like us to expand in that type of service, where people come to Camrose,” said Lovely.

“I can tell you that if we only focus on one of these aspects, our community won’t thrive. We need to build partnerships to work together across all of those sectors to have a thriving community. Investment won’t come to Camrose if we don’t have good health, social services, culture and recreation facilities as well as a thriving economy. We need all of that to come together,” said Bruneau.

price changes every month anyway,” said Bruneau.

“I’ll agree, deregulation was a tough one. This climate change agenda with carbon tax. NDP, UPC and Liberals are all united on carbon tax and the premier is on record of wanting to triple the amount of carbon tax in order to keep pace with the federal carbon tax. That effects energy costs, let’s get smarter about this,” said Blayone.

Crime is a concern in our community. Do you support defunding the police?

“We have increased funding for K to 12 education. We are investing in education. We are going to have a speech pathology class right here in Camrose (Augustana). My sister had to go to North Dakota to receive her education because it wasn’t offered in western Canada. We need to address the younger children in school and we have an aging population who have strokes and need that speech pathology for treatments to be fully functional again. We have announced an occupational therapy and physiotherapy course. All of those will be offered right here in Camrose so students won’t have to travel outside of the country or to eastern Canada to receive this education,” said Lovely.

“What industry or sector in Camrose needs the most support over the next 10 years?

“Every sector is important, big or small. Agriculture is very important, I’ll say is number one,” said Blayone.

“I’m very passionate

With electricity prices more than doubling, what will you do about withholding energy to allow generating companies to manipulate electricity prices?

“The reason we are having this problem is because of the carbon tax. The other thing is the most efficient form of energy, coal, was closed down. That put a lot of people out of work and hurt communities, especially Forestburg. We need to have affordable energy and have solutions on how to provide that. Having us all drive around in electric cars is not the solution. Our federal government is on the wrong track,” said Lovely.

“Prices are ridiculous, but that is not the fault of the federal government. It is the fault of our own provincial government and the deregulation process that is set up with our power companies. It restricts us from having the benefit of the resources we have here. How are we giving these companies that much power? They can add on any extra charges they want, so even if you have a fixed rate, the

“I’ve spoken to law enforcement people and they are doing the best that they can. We need to put more boots on the ground. We also have an increased drug problem. People want to have a recovery program to help loved ones go through a detox treatment and wrap around services so they can leave that lifestyle,” said Lovely.

“I feel the anger of not being able to do anything (about stopping crime). We need to add more social services and fund more police officers. You can’t have one without the other. People need support, not just handcuffs. We have to look at the root problems of crime. We are not going to waste hundreds of millions of dollars on a provincial police force that we don’t need. How is downloading the costs to rural municipalities count for the province doing anything about crime,” said Bruneau.

“The number of people wanting to become a police officer is down. Police are facing challenges because everyone knows crime is rampant. Property owners are frustrated, police are frustrated because it is a catch and release system, what does that speak to our justice system. Our justice system is broken. It needs to be addressed. No more political appointed judges, that is not working,” said Blayone.

Spring is in the air and soon it will be filled with music.

The Camerata Choir will be hosting a concert coming on May 19, called Songs of Love, Home and Spring at the Camrose United Church at 7 p.m. Admission is by donation.

“Our theme is around flowers, love and spring time. We will be having some guest instrumentalists join us for some beautiful, fun and quirky music about these themes,” said conductor and co-founder Joy-Anne Murphy.

Camrose Camerata is an auditioned, community-based chamber choir, whose mandate is to perform high quality choral music that is as fun and enlightening as it is inspiring and challenging for both the singers and the audience.

“Our songs for the spring concert will feature songs with up to five parts to it. One song features just the choir singing a cappella. Another set of five songs features flute and clarinet players. It is interesting what they can do to add to the vocals. We will have no piano, which is unusual

for us. The other set of five songs will have the piano and soprano saxophone. Our flute player also plays the saxophone,” explained Joy-Anne.

“The group of songs with the saxophone is a very playful set and we get to sing ‘Daisy Daisy’ and ‘Bicycle Built For Two’ in a choir arrangement,” she added. “One of our singers, Rob MacMillan, also plays in the Battle River Big Band and had connections to Marshall Tindall and Ben Gagnon, so we asked them to play with us.”

The choir came into existence in 2003, with an initial membership of 18 singers and has continued to perform and grow throughout its history.

“Our numbers dropped through COVID-19, in fact, we completely stopped for the first year. But we are back up to 14 people who just want to have a concert again,” shared Joy-Anne. “We are lucky to have so many dedicated singers. We make music in spite of not having as many people.”

Camerata’s mission is to take advantage of the high level of musicianship

that already exists within the greater Camrose community, giving singers of a variety of levels of experience and ability the opportunity to expand their choral horizons; to bring high calibre choral music from all styles and eras, languages and cultures to members and the audience in the greater Camrose community; and to teach and learn about great choral music and artistic expression both within our choir and within the community at large.

The name Camerata is an Italian word first used in the Renaissance to describe a group of individuals who share a strong passion for a particular art form, in this case choral music, and who get together often in a chamber (or camera) to share that loved art form.

“Some of these songs are based on poetry, so it makes it fun for us to sing them over and over, then share the music with others. It is a challenge for us, but keeps us on our toes,” said JoyAnne.

The choir practices at the United Church every Monday evening.

Camrose ‘Walk Together for ALS’ raises funds, awareness

On Saturday, June 3, come out and join others at Mirror Lake (south side), outside the Bill Fowler Centre, for The Camrose Walk Together for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) and be part of building awareness and hope for a future without ALS.

The walk, which is

hosted by the ALS Society of Alberta, will begin with registration at 9:30 a.m. and is one of many walks around the province that help bring awareness to ALS Awareness Month (June).

ALS is a rapid, always fatal, neurodegenerative disease that attacks the nerves of the body that sends messages from the

brain to the muscle, resulting in muscle weakness and wasting. In time, a person struggling with ALS will be left completely immobilized with an inability to swallow or breath. With no known cause or cure the disease can attack anyone at any age, and currently, 3,000 Canadians live with ALS.

Local Camrosian, treasured wife, mother, grandmother, friend and community member Lori Huolt has been a steadfast advocate for ALS awareness in Camrose since her own journey with ALS began four years ago. “I received the news, ‘You have ALS.’ and those words shattered my world,” recalled Lori,

who remembers wondering, ‘How could this be?’

“I felt healthy, happy and strong despite a little trouble with my right hand. As we know sometimes life has a way of throwing curve balls when we least expect it and I thought to myself, ‘We now have to play this new ball game.’”

Lori admits that one of the most difficult parts was sharing the diagnosis with her family and friends. “Once the shock of this news was realized, the outpouring of love and support was truly amazing as they rallied around me and we started down this path.

“We have always tried to live every day the best possible way and this was a real world reminder of how important it truly is to not take any day for granted and never pass up the opportunity to say ‘I love you.’”

Lori said that while it did take some time to reevaluate the new situation, along with her family and friends she began planning for the new future that she had been dealt.

tion, referrals and equipment lending programs.”

In continued support of raising awareness and funds Cheryl hand makes and sells lanyards, which she has coined Lori’s Lanyards, with all proceeds going towards the Camrose Walk to End ALS. The lanyards are available at Camrose Safeway pharmacy and The Sweeterie.

In 2019, the Camrose Walk to End ALS raised $23,675; in 2020, $33,780; 2021, $36,617 and last year $33,429.

In speaking of her friend Lori, Cheryl remarked, “She is one of the strongest and most positive women that I am honoured to call my friend. ALS has deprived her of many move -

“We have been blessed to have been able to travel a lot in life and have met many great people who frequently reach out just to say ‘Hi’ and ‘I hope you are doing well.’ This means so much to me. The world is full of great and kind people,” shared Lori.

“We continue to travel when possible and this is in part due to the great support I receive from the ALS Society of Alberta,” said Lori, adding that she has been provided with many items that help to make her everyday life more comfortable and help her deal with the difficulties that accompany ALS. “When the ALS Society receives your donation, be assured that those of us with this disease appreciate the support.”

Camrose Walk Together for ALS coordinator and supportive friend of Lori’s, Cheryl Feth, encourages anyone to join the walk to help raise awareness for this devastating disease.

“The ALS Society is dedicated to making each day the best possible day for people living with and affected by ALS,” said Cheryl. “The ALS Society helps our fellow Albertans and their families live as comfortably and independently as possible through home visits, support groups, informa-

ments and her speech–yet she continues to smile and encourage us all to live each day to its fullest.”

Appreciative of all the continued support from family, friends and members of her community Lori remarked. “My happy place continues to be my family as we are so lucky to be a close knit family and we have always faced any adversity together. My husband, sons, daughterin-laws and our very special granddaughters, Blake and Annie, are my shining lights–how lucky am I.

“As ALS has limited my ability to communicate with my granddaughters, we have developed an amazing way to communicate with no words required –they are truly my world!”

Through generous donations and continued promotion of awareness, ALS is able to provide support, facilitate the provision of care, help find a cure and advocate for change.

“My final message to everyone,” offered Lori. “Please do not feel sorry for me. Continue to smile. Life is good–not perfect, but so very close.”

Upcoming Art Exhibit features works with wire, photography

The Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts

Centre along with Camrose art curator Jane Cherry present the May 26 to June 22 Art Exhibit in the lobby of the Performing Arts Centre featuring Edmonton artists Laura and Louis Ouimet.

“I have early memories of making things with sticks and yarn. My mom always said if I was quiet as a child she would likely find me making something,” said Laura.

The exhibition at the Lougheed Performing Arts Centre will feature installations from Laura’s wire art and Louis photography.

Laura grew up in Wetaskiwin, moving to and remaining in Edmonton for her adult life while Louis grew up in Edmonton. Both have a passion for illustrating the world through fascinating mediums.

“My passion is to teach and develop new projects and unique applications of the unusual medium, of sculpting with wire. This is especially the case with the chicken wire,” explained Laura adding that her favourite part of teaching comes with the “aha or wow” moments experienced by students when they create something special. “Those moments feed my soul and fill my heart.”

Laura has a variety of shows under her belt and

her work has been commended and recognized in the art world. Recently her sculpture, Venus Illuminated was voted Peoples’ Choice in the It’s a Tactile World Show, hosted by the Allied Arts Council. “I have an upcoming feature in Crafting a Career in the Arts” which will be aired on Telus Optic TV sometime this summer, and have previously been invited to guest judge with Heather Boyd Wire on her YouTube channel.”

As an emerging photographer, Louis presents art through the lens of his camera. “He has been self employed as a roofer for almost 40 years and with retirement in the near future, he is able to focus on his photography and the processing the many thousands of photos he’s taken in our extensive adventure

travels across six continents, including Antarctica,” said Laura.

He began his photography journey as a young child and also spent some time learning the ins and outs of processing his photos himself in High school.

“He is also an accomplished woodworker, holds a black belt in Karate and is a seasoned mountain and glacier climber,” said Laura of Louis. “He cuts all his mats and glass himself and builds all his frames to custom sizes.”

Join Laura on June 9 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. for a greet and meet at the Lougheed Performing Arts Centre, and get a close up look at a unique and beautiful spin on art.

Visit Laura’s social media platform at lauraouimet/ wemetwirework and Louis’ at louisouimetphotography.

Professional advisors share BRCF vision, lunch

The Battle River Community Foundation held its Professional Advisors Luncheon to salute donors on May 10, at the Camrose Railway Station and Museum.

“Welcome to the Professional Advisors Luncheon. Where else can you buy a $500 hamburger and feel this warm and fuzzy about it? I want to say how great it is to come together with this tradition at the Railway Station,” said BRCF chairman Kevin Gurr.

“Some of you have been with us every year since our first Professional Advisors Luncheon years ago, and some of you are here for the first time. Because there are new faces here today, I thought I would start with a brief review of the BRCF history,” said Kevin.

Guests learned that the BRCF was established in 1995 by a small group of local citizens, to create annual support for important community charities related to arts, culture, education, health, recreation and more. The goal was to create permanent endowment funds, which would be carefully invested to create annual investment income for charitable purposes forever.

The BRCF’s first fund was the result of 10 individual $1,000 donations from the founding board members and the first grant was a $200 scholarship.

“The advisors group luncheon is very important to our organization. Our endowment funds grew from 408 last year to 424 funds. We have more than $21 million now. We granted $3,158 that first year. Last year we granted $821,000. The total amount granted since inception is $8.7 million, to worthy charities over the years. Those numbers, to me, are always amazing to see considering the downturn.

ADVISORS LUNCH

Battle River Community Professional Advisors attended a luncheon on May 10 at the Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park to raise funds for the Administration Endowment Fund. Middle row from left, Luke Kelemen of Camrose Insurance Financial Solutions, Michael Wetsch of Grant Thornton, Stephen Kambeitz of Farnham West Stolee Kambeitz, Jennifer Orcheski of Orcheski Wealth Management BMO Nesbitt Burns, Norm Mayer of Mayer Holdings, Debbie Orcheski of Orcheski Wealth Management BMO Nesbitt Burns, Doug Tien of Investors Group, Glen Bulger of Vision Credit Union and Matt Danko of Camrose Insurance Financial Solutions. Front row from left, Darcie Sabados of Grant Thornton, Beth Kushnerik of Grant Thornton, Kirstyn Rau of Olson and Rau Law Office, Shelley Moch of Vision Credit Union and Ashley Radchenko of Garnett Radchenko MacKay. Other contributors who were unable to be present include Corey Kudrowich of Investors Group, Andreassen Borth, Jon Stolee of Farnham West Stolee Kambeitz, Jodie Feddema of Edward Jones, Tim Vant of Vant Financial, Corinna Kavgadoulis of CK Tax and Accounting, Dan Cunningham of Camrose Insurance Financial Solutions, Greg Joyce of Kroeger Joyce Inman, Scott Farnham of Farnham West Stolee Kambeitz and Martin West of Farnham West Stolee Kambeitz.

Thanks to Chris Quinn and partners at the Edmonton Community Foundation for best investment practices. It shows the growth of this organization over the years. The earnings were distributed in grants to a variety of charities for worthwhile projects throughout the Battle River community. Best of all, after all the grants have been paid, the original principal remains intact, so earnings and, in turn, granting will go on

forever,” Kevin explained.

“We also outgrew our space downtown and moved three blocks east, where we have more space for offices and storage space. That was a big move last year. We bought new computers, but we did find used furniture,” laughed Kevin.

He continued with the history lesson. “Over the years, the board has also adopted policies to set aside a portion of the annual investment income, part to

be added to the principal of each fund (to take into account the effects of inflation) and part to ensure that annual granting will occur even in bad economic climates.

“One of our goals has been to establish an administration endowment fund that will generate enough annual investment income to cover our annual administrative budget. At the close of business in 2021, through your generosity

and the generosity of others, we have $1.6 million in the Administrative Endowment Fund.

“The purpose of our annual Professional Advisors Luncheon is twofold: to thank you for your continued support through your annual $500 contribution to our administration endowment fund. The other is to ask you, as trusted advisors, to consider the BRCF as you continue to guide your clients through their life decisions related to philanthropy.

“We know that there are many worthwhile choices for giving and we are happy to collaborate with you and share examples of all the good things that have been achieved in the past 28 years through the Foundation. Although the growth and financial numbers are impressive, these are simply statements of facts. The real story here is about people and relationships. The Foundation–yours and mine–is the result of the collective efforts of thousands of caring people,” said Kevin. “Caring people who recognize the needs in our community and who develop initiatives and projects to address those needs. Thanks for helping us build a caring community. I appreciate that.”

The board consists of chairman Gurr; past chair Imogene Walsh; vice-chair Stephen Kambeitz; treasurer Neil Lunty; secretary Charlene Chevraux; directors Wes Campbell, Rob Hauser, Leon Lohner, Carol Rollheiser and Ben Paulsen; executive director Dana Andreassen; finance and admin support Karen Bossman and Lisa Vanden Dungen; finance and admin consultant Tom Kuntz; and founding member and ambassador emeritus Blain Fowler.

DePaz invited to international soccer tournament

Miquel dePaz-Gendreau trains in soccer for the Elite Soccer Academy in Edmonton, and was asked to play in a tournament in Madrid, Spain, June 19 to 28.

“Scouts came from Spain to meet with Soccer Alberta and see the players to attend a camp and play in a tournament. My grandson was one of the players chosen to play,” said Jorge dePaz.

Miguel is a Grade 11 student at Our Lady of Mount Pleasant School. Team Alberta will be the only Canadian representative of 15 players to be at the tournament.

“This is good motivation to keep them playing soccer. He just turned 16 in February. The academy waved his payment because they wanted a good player. They wanted to train him,” he added.

DePaz-Gendreau started with the Camrose Soccer Association and then played for the St. Albert Impact U16 team in both indoor and outdoor seasons last year. He also trains with the academy after school during the week.

“If Miguel makes the team in Spain, he could

end up taking his Grade 12 in Spain to keep playing for the team. He has an advantage over the other two players going from Alberta because he speaks both English and Spanish. All of the training over there is in Spanish, for him that won’t be

difficult at all,” pointed out Jorge, a Camrose resident who is originally from Guatemala.

The U17 (born in 2007) tournament is called the Para Jugar en el Mad Cup in Madrid. It is a mini World Cup with about 600 teams entered.

“I always said, put the children in sports because that gives them something to do and keeps them away from drugs and trouble. He keeps busy by going three times a week to train in Edmonton.”

Miguel is the son of Zoila dePaz-Gendreau and Shane Gendreau.

Mad Cup is the meeting point where the sports and educational communities meet in a unique setting, living together to show everyone the strength that sport has to educate the little ones in values. It is a space for learning, respect and competition.

For the 2023 edition, it is estimated that more than 600 teams will participate, 12,000 players, more than 1,600 matches will be played and it is estimated that it will have more than 120,000 spectators.

owns a 1953 Fargo truck.

“I found this truck just down the road. I was at a garage sale and asked a guy about this truck. He said it wasn’t for sale at that time. I kept my eye on it for 25 years and it was still sitting in the same spot,” explained Jim.

“He gave me his number the day I was at the garage sale. So, I searched for the number and called. I had a little extra cash from selling my license plate collection. I bought it the summer before COVID and it ended up being a COVID project for me,” shared Jim.

The truck was used for hauling grain with a gate for dumping grain. “I don’t know how many bushels it would have held, but it did haul some grain. It would taken a lot of trips to the elevator compared to the trucks now,” he laughed.

“The truck is all original and it’s lots of fun to drive. It suits our budget. We don’t have to worry about a big toy budget with paint jobs and motors. The fact the truck was a Fargo was interesting to me. I haven’t seen very many around and I know Fargos were built in Canada,” added Jim.

Fargo was a brand of trucks originally produced in the United States in 1913 by the Fargo Motor Car Com-

“I think it is a cool looking truck. I always liked the

FUN FACTS

Chrysler absorbed Dodge and started producing its truck line, so over time, Fargo trucks became rebadged Dodges.

The 1953 Fargo truck was available with a variety of engine options, including a six-cylinder engine that produced 95 horsepower and a V8 engine that produced 140 horsepower. It was also available with either a three-speed manual or a four-speed manual transmission.

The first face lift of this design came in 1951. Most prominent of the changes was a new grille panel. For the first time, the grille was more than just “cooling louvres.” A rectangular opening was crossed by twin bars joined by a large chrome center-piece. Since this item carried the familiar Dodge advertising slogan (Job-Rated), it wouldn’t do for Fargo to use it, so they didn’t. Instead the Fargo globe appeared in its place. The long-running theme of a grille being no more than holes punched into the front sheet metal was still given a slight nod, however.

The grille bars were available only in the body colour. The chrome, no contrasting paint—just a pinstripe running along the lower edge of each bar. Together with the new grille came a slight modification of the hood.

pilot cabs (1948-53 cabs) because they are rounded. The cabs have lots of room in them. It has been a lot fun putting it together and driving it,” said Jim.

“I had to fix the brakes and get the motor running properly. It was just some things that took time to do,” said Jim.

“I put on more than 500 miles a year. This is my sixth or seventh car show this year (August 2022). We drive it every week and go cruising on Tuesday night. A friend of mine gave me a farm plate to go with the truck,” he added.

“I can go all day and not worry about a speeding ticket. It goes about 50-55 miles per hour and that is where it stays. I like the way the truck makes me feel when I drive it. When you get in and turn the key you get a different feel to the truck. It lights up your sense of smell and feel. Your heart rate goes up a bit because you are excited about doing something different that day,” said Jim.

“It is a challenge to get on the road because you never know what is going to happen. It is an adventure,” he said. “I want to fix the bed box with new wood and some new headliner in the cab. I want to make it more

soundproof. You hear every rain drop and rock when you are going down the road,” Jim shared.

“The truck had all of the badges, so luckily I didn’t have to go hunting for those.”

Election campaign sign process

As we progress towards the Provincial election of May 29, more and more campaign signage has become visible throughout the city and county.

In an effort to clarify the process followed for the placement of election signage in Camrose , City of Camrose Planning and Development manager Aaron Leckie referred to the City of Camrose Council Policy regarding Election Signs.

The Policy, which is available on the City of Camrose website at www. camrose.ca, states the following.

According to Section 4.1.1. Election signs can be displayed on private property with the consent of the owner/occupant of the property. When displayed on private property, election signs cannot be placed less than 1 metre from the Side Yard.

“Signs cannot be placed in boulevards in front of homes as this is public property,” noted Leckie.

Property owners can remove elections signs from their private property, if the signs are displayed without their consent.

4.1.2. Election signs can be displayed on a fence provided that the election sign is displayed with the consent of the owner/occupant of the property.

the CHIEF A

Question:

What are the laws regarding election signs during the campaign? Where can people put signs and what should you do if other people take them down?

Answer:

This is a larger answer than I have space for, but in a nutshell, City Bylaws dictate the rules surrounding election signs. Regulations such as not placing them too close to intersections, obstructing view, size, illumination, etc. etc. There are also rules about the timing, such as displaying signs no more than 25 days prior to election, and removing them within 72 hours after the election. Tampering with, damaging or stealing election signs is illegal under the Criminal Code and the Canada Elections Act. Anyone doing so can be charged with mischief/damage to property or theft under $5,000, which carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison.

Have a question for the Chief? Email them to The Camrose Booster at news@camrosebooster.com

“Election signs are permitted on certain public roadways, but are heavily regulated in the location and number of signs to avoid sign clutter,” explained Leckie. “The general rule is one “lawn size” (1.2 m2) election sign is permitted for each candidate, per direction, between each intersection, along parts of Camrose Drive, 68th Street, and a few other select roadways in Camrose.”

The election policy describes the detailed regulations and all locations supplemented by a map. Election signs cannot block sight lines for pedestrians, cyclists, or motorists, cannot be adjacent to a voting place, and cannot be located on public parks or adjacent to public buildings.

“This is the first election where the City of Camrose is allowing some election signs on some public roads,” said Leckie.

“We’ve also been diligently following up on all

complaints and advising campaigns of the need to remove or relocate problematic signs.”

Section 4.3.2. of the Policy makes reference to the display period of election signs for provincial and federal elections, indicating election signs can be displayed from the day the writ of election.

Removal of signage is as follows: Section 4.4.1 states, election signs must be removed 72 hours after the completion of voting on election day.

4.4.2. Election signs displayed on private property must be removed by the owner/occupant of the property. The owner/occupant can also request removal/retrieval by the candidate or third party who provided them the election sign(s).

4.4.3. Election signs displayed on public property must be removed by the candidate or third party responsible for their display.

Margaret Patricia Speed

January 5, 1925 ~ May 4, 2023

With saddened hearts, the family of Margaret Speed, of Camrose, AB, announces her passing on May 4, 2023, at the age of 98 years.

Margaret was born in Newfoundland, the oldest of 11 children. She met Herbert Speed during the War and they were married in 1944. She immigrated into Canada before Newfoundland was a part of Canada, and moved to Saskatchewan to wait for Herbert to come home from the War. When he came home, they moved to Devon, where they raised five children before they moved to Calgary, until she retired to Camrose.

Margaret is remembered by her daughter Sandra Bolton (Mike) and son David Speed (Lynne); along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband Herbert Speed; her children Charles (Donna), Peggy (Allan), and Raymond; her grandchild Connie and her parents Willis and Elizabeth Carter.

Cremation has taken place and a private family gathering is to be held at a later date.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results!

Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Occasions, such as the Senior Band Tour, provide students with valuable lessons outside of the classroom beyond developing their technical abilities. These trips help students to grow, share and realize the diversity that exists beyond the walls of the school and beyond the borders of their community.

ÉCCHS Grade 10 student Ben Lee summed it up and expressed his gratitude for having been given the opportunity to participate in such an incredible event. “My experience during our tour was an amazing one. Our performance, the clinics/ workshops, and various other activities brought so many wonderful memories to look back on. I learned quite a bit more on how to play my instrument for the most part, but I was also able to talk and interact with many people whom I have never spoken with before.”

Hospice Wind connecting to loved ones

The Hospice Society of Camrose and District is continually evolving and developing programs to support those with lifelimiting illness through theirs’ and their families’ journeys.

One such program is the inspiring Wind Phone initiative. After seeing news articles in other communities install “wind phones”, Hospice Society of Camrose and District administrative coordinator Melanie Poole launched the Wind Phone initiative, another program that offers comfort in a unique and personal manner, to those grieving the loss of a loved one.

The Wind Phone involves a strategically placed “old style” rotary phone (disconnected) in a private, quiet location.

“The phone can be used by those wishing to reach out to a deceased loved one, in a private location in a public space,” explained Poole.

The concept of the Wind Phone originated in North Eastern Japan (known as kaze no denwa) as a way to stay connected to the deceased, and has not only garnered national attention but has proven to be a successful tool in helping those dealing with grief.

“All someone has to do is pick up the receiver and dial in the name of the person they want to reach out

to,” said Poole. “We want to honour privacy, yet help the person and our community to accept grief more in a public way.”

The desire to communicate with a deceased loved one is human and has been practiced by cultures throughout history for years. Grief experts say that having these conversations can prove to be a healthy coping mechanism and source of comfort.

Anyone is invited to use the Wind Phone, located indoors at the Hospice office

at 5415-49 Avenue (lower level of the Mirror Lake Centre), whenever someone feels a need for connection. Everyone is asked to respect the privacy and needs of others when passing by the Wind Phone in use.

The Hospice Society of Camrose and District library is generally open Monday through Friday until 4:30 p.m.

For more information on the Hospice Society of Camrose and District visit the website at www.camrosehospice.org.

I don't know how we're ve months into a year that star ted two weeks ago

I asked my boss, "Can I have a few days o , seeing as it's so close to Christmas?"

He said, "It's May."

"Sorr y," I replied. "May I have a few days o , seeing as it's so close to Christmas?"

I just realized why this month is called May. It may rain, it may snow, it may be 33° or it may freeze I need a maycation. I may come back and I may not

It's the May long weekend! I'm so excited I wet my plants! Time to plant my garden – or, as the local deer call it, my all -you-can-eat bu et.

Whoever said that money can't buy happiness has clearly never been to a garden centre!

The only thing I'm growing this spring is older and more irritable

I really want to grow my own food, but I can't nd any bacon seeds.

Gardening is cheaper than therapy … until your spouse adds up the receipts from the greenhouse.

The secret to my green thumb:

Planting so many plants that no one can tell if half of them die

Did you know that if you garden in your back yard naked, your neighbours will build you a privacy fence at absolutely no cost to you?

Procrastiplanting (verb): when you have a million other things to do, but you ignore them all and tend to your plants instead.

Be safe out there on the roads today! My car just slid into the garden centre's parking lot again.

If a plant is sad, do other plants photosympathize with it ?

Neighbour: "Where is your husband?"

Central Agencies Realty Home of the Week

Well-kept bungalow

home with this beautifully maintained bungalow that features three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a huge yard, a 26’ x 24’ double garage, another single vehicle garage, as well as RV parking. Bashaw itself offers plenty of amenities, including an arena, parks, trails, fishing pond, golf course, shopping and more, and is an easy commute to Stettler, Camrose and Red Deer.

The home offers room for your growing family with loads of upgrades that make it move-in ready.

The living room area is large enough to accommodate a comfy sectional and full entertainment unit, and features a huge front window that invites in so much sunshine.

Just off the living room is the large open kitchen with eat-in dining and plenty of storage with the stunning custom-built cherry wood cabinets.

Completing the upper level are three bedrooms and the recently updated four-piece main bathroom.

The lower level is completely finished and has a huge family room area that could easily be converted back into a fourth bedroom and, with the threepiece bathroom, it would be perfect for overnight guests or an older child.

Two more spacious rooms could be used as a home office, gym or hobby room, and a huge storage area with built-in shelving is great for seasonal storage.

Enjoy outdoor living with the huge lot, and delight in having a double garage for your vehicles and a single garage that could be used for storage or a shop.

Small-town living with lots of big city amenities awaits you with this wonderful family home located at 5212-53 Avenue, Bashaw. It is priced at $264,900. For a private viewing, contact Sascha Dressler at:

Me: "We had an argument. He's in the garden."

Neighbour: "I was just there, I didn't see him."

Me: "Dig deeper."

Roses are red

Violets are blue

Sun owers are yellow

I get you were expecting something romantic, but no, these are just gardening facts.

I really only wanted to have 10 tomato plants, but if God wants me to have 20, then 40 it is!

Me: Gives my plants perfect soil, fer tilizer, temperature, light, water, humidity, etc.

Plant: "The best I can do is one new leaf."

Real gardeners buy at least ten thousand plants in the course of a lifetime without having the least idea where they'll put any of them when they get home

Going to do some gardening today. I'm going to plant myself on the couch!

From the mouths of teachers during the month of May

"I have no idea how many days of school are lef t."

– No teacher ever during the month of May

My e or t level in September:

• Cute, coordinated teacher out t

• Healthy lunch packed in a Mason jar

• Pristine educational bulletin board.

My e or t level in May:

• Casual Friday on repeat

• Sur viving on my emergency granola bars.

• Bulletin board still has Easter eggs on it

I was updating my weekly parent letter and accidentally typed May 235th.

Honestly, it's not far o

Maycember: When May is way busier than December, only there aren't any presents.
