Pickleball Club gives back to community

The Camrose Pickleball Club not only provides an exciting option for residents to get out and enjoy some physical activity, but the Club is delighted to be able to give back to the community.

On June 4, the Club held a family fun tournament at the Max McLean arena with 42 players in all taking part in the sport.

“We had a great time and we raised $500 for the Camrose Food Bank,” said Camrose Pickleball Club member Jim Kennedy.

A cheque was presented to Camrose Neighbor Aid Center on June 16 by Club president Dean Edwards, which will assist the Food Bank in providing much appreciated help to those in our community.

Taking their lead from the show of generosity, junior Club members Lyra and Porter Cave (with a little help from mom Trista) baked cookies that they offered to players, during the tournament, in exchange for donations.

“They raised $113 for the Camrose Animal Shelter,” noted Jim.

The Camrose Pickleball Club has been playing since 2013 and has grown to approximately 190 members with new members joining almost every week.

During the fall and win-

ter the Club plays indoors at the Camrose Fieldhouse, Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons.

During the spring and summer months the Club plays outdoors at St. Patrick Catholic school, or in the event of inclement weather indoors at Max McLean Arena.

Recently the Club was joined on the court, by members of Centra Cam staff, for a “hands-on” demonstration of the game to provide feedback on a fit for Centra Cam clients.

“It was a rousing success with many clients asking about future opportunities to play,” said Jim. “Pickleball is a great activity for helping people improve their physical health as well as mental health by providing people opportunities to expand their social circles.”

Pickleball is a game that can be enjoyed by players of all ages and is traditionally played on a badminton sized court using pickleball paddles. The ball used is similar to a wiffle ball (plastic ball with holes in it), but slightly smaller.

What‘s your favourite Canadian food?

“Canadians eat fried flour and tree sap!”

When my sister was a college student, one of her friends from Asia opened her eyes to the fact that not everyone ate the way our small-town prairie family ate.

One day my sister was delighted that her college’s cafeteria special was roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy–one of her favourites. Meanwhile, her Asian friend was wondering what he would eat that day. The thought of “cooked cow and potatoes smothered in animal grease” repelled him. He once said, “Canadians eat fried flour and tree sap!” It took my sister a minute to figure out he was talking about pancakes and maple syrup.

***

Growing up, our main meal of the day was pretty standard: fried meat (roast beef on Sunday), boiled potatoes (sometimes mashed), boiled vegetables and a slice of tomato so we had vitamins. Dessert (if any) was usually canned fruit, occasionally with cookies.

Our idea of “variety” was frying or baking the potatoes instead of boiling them. Meat meant beef. We’d specify if it was pork. Occasionally it would be chicken; almost never fish.

We had a proper combination of protein, starch, vitamins and minerals–decent nutrition according to the Canada Food Guide of the time–but for our mom, meals were just one more thing to look after while focussing on the main job–getting the family business (The Camrose Booster) up and running and financially sustainable in the face of huge obstacles.

***

In our (then) small town, I did learn that not everyone ate the way we did. Ukrainian friends had perogies and cabbage rolls. Norwegian friends had lefse and lutefisk (lefse I liked; lutefisk not so much). I loved to visit one of my friend’s homes after school on Tuesdays because that was the day her mother made Danish pastry. For a bit of variety, our family sometimes had Chinese food–though I now understand it was a prairie-ized version.

I think of the pioneer women who, working from a coal and wood stove, fed families of eight or more children, plus, at some seasons, seeding or threshing crews. “Refrigeration” was a root cellar or hanging things down the well. It would have been “organic” food–home-grown vegetables and possibly meat or poultry raised on the farm. For many months in the winter, fresh fruit and vegetables would be rare or completely missing.

***

When I read about an adventure of two Toronto chefs on June 21, our longest day of the year, I thought about Canadian food and the food of my childhood. The two chefs did a one-day six-city Canadian tour in search of “quintessential Canadian ingredients.” Then on Canada Day, in a Taste of Canada menu at their high-end Toronto restaurant, they used ingredients from their one-day crossCanada adventure.

Here’s what the two chefs experienced on their one-day coastto-coast tour: 12 midnight Atlantic time–Charlottetown–fresh Atlantic lobster, PEI potatoes and Montreal cheese curds.

At 6 a.m. Atlantic time–Halifax–wild blueberries, local granola and yogurt.

At 11 a.m. Eastern time–Ottawa–from the Byward Market, local cheeses from Ottawa Valley and Quebec with drizzles of maple butter.

At 2 p.m. Eastern time–Toronto–from the St. Lawrence Market, a Toronto signature peameal bacon sandwich with locally brewed cider and cold beer.

At 7:30 p.m. Mountain time–Calgary–ribeye and t-bone steaks (of course!) with Bloody Caesar cocktails. (I’ve been told that Calgary was the birthplace of the Bloody Caesar).

At 11:30 p.m. Pacific time–Vancouver–wild Sockeye Salmon and Kushi oysters.

Quite the list of Canadian ingredients! ***

As an adult, I’ve learned two things I didn’t realize as a child.

1. Cooking can be a joy and a pleasure, not just one more thing to fit into the day’s many responsibilities.

2. There can be more to a meal than fried meat, boiled potatoes and vegetables, and maybe dessert on special occasions.

Who knew?

So, what’s your favourite Canadian food? (My definition: if it’s prepared in Canada, that makes it Canadian!) ***

I’d love to hear from you. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send an email to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com . I’ll happily reply within one business day.

Health care

In response to a letter published two weeks ago about the UCP and health care. First, I would like to thank the good doctor for her service to Alberta and its citizens. The letter lambastes the local UCP representative and Camrose citizens with a very partisan viewpoint. Granted, there are many serious issues facing health care which need to be addressed.

However, a google search on Canadian Health Care in other provinces will display a myriad of web pages. Most articles clearly point out the vast shortcomings in each province. Alberta is certainly far from the worst. Every single province is affected greatly by a shortage of family doctors, wait times are much too long for surgeries, etc.

I have lived in six provinces and actually settled in Alberta for better access to health care. I am not sure where the good doctor would opt to practice if she chooses to leave (please stay), as every single province is in a crisis and most faring worse than Alberta.

This is happening in spite of which political party is in power. This is a decades long result of the Chretien/Martin liberals who balanced their budget on the backs of the provincial health care transfers. Furthermore, the current federal government is irresponsibly adding millions more to the population without any corresponding increase in health infrastructure.

A certain recipe for more chaos. In my opinion the difference is that the NDP party in any province (and federal liberals) mismanage the economy to such an extent (with

unmanageable debt as we have seen), that future health care will be even more negatively affected, if not completely collapsed.

Health care

I really enjoyed reading the letter from Dr. Charley M. Boyd, which I found in the June 20 edition of the Camrose Booster.

To defend the 63 per cent of this Camrose Constituency supporting the UCP in the past election. In 2015, the NDP were given a chance to put their policies into place in this province. Rachel Notley did not waste anytime in increasing the corporate tax, which resulted in a huge exit out of Alberta. They forced families on rural farms to pay out of pocket expenses which they could not afford. Notley also is close with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who is trying to destroy this province. His father put in the energy tax, which just about sunk Alberta in the 1980s. If the Alberta Social Credit would have ran a candidate I would have voted for that candidate. I do believe that party had the answers to our problems.

There was no one else to vote for is our defense. This was the lesser of two evils. I am so sorry that you were disappointed. But seriously the NDP are terrible and are more evil than the UCP.

Distort facts

In last week’s edition of Just Sayin’ Dr. Charley M. Boyd actively attacked and spread misinformation about our health care system and our duly elected MLA, Jackie Lovely.

As a 10 year plus resident and supporter of our community, I feel compelled to address her comments. In just a few years, the UCP has accomplished a great deal to fix Alberta’s public health care system. They struck a funding deal with doctors, signed a $24 billion, 10-year funding deal with the federal government and boosted the provincial health budget by nearly $1 billion. They also implemented reforms to reduce wait times and restore local decision-making within the system. MLA Lovely has worked hard and supported all these initiatives, which are already working to improve the system.

MLA Lovely has also been a consistent advocate for improving rural healthcare with a strong focus on addressing the province’s rural nursing shortage. Based on her successful first term and resulting reelection, MLA Lovely is committed to her constituents and deeply invested in our community.

Dr. Boyd’s attempts to distort the facts fuels confusion, undermines the truth and erodes public trust. These baseless accusations are truly a disservice to our community, and something Albertans rejected in the last election. Dr. Boyd has not only insulted the constituents of Camrose, who have the right to shape the government that represents them, but has undermined our community’s ability to create robust, vibrant public discourse based on fact and free from deception.

Dave Ferguson of Bittern Lake caught a couple of rare sightings in early June. He took a picture of a turkey vulture east of Bittern Lake and then near Strome, he saw a black (brown phase) bear. The recent fires and smoke have caused some animals and birds to venture out of their usual environment.

Mitts wins Governor General Award

In recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement, Camrosian Raelene Mitts was the 2023 recipient of the Governor General’s Academic Medal presented during the Medicine Hat College convocation ceremony held on June 9.

The Governor General’s Award is a nearly 150-yearold award that recognizes exceptional academic accomplishments of students in Canada.

The award is given to students graduating with the highest average from a high school, as well as from approved college or university programs and is one of the most prestigious status medals to receive in Canada.

“The historic Governor General’s Academic Medal was created in 1873 to encourage academic excellence across the nation,” explained Raelene.

A graduate of École Camrose Composite High School, Raelene recently graduated with a diploma from Medicine Hat College, two-year Early Learning and Child Care program.

“I was honoured, as I had a fantastic faculty at Medicine Hat College and mentors along the way in Camrose, too.”

Raelene’s future goals include completing a degree in Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies at the University of Calgary, with career goals in occupational therapy or early intervention for children, in addition to her ongoing involvement with global non-profit work and mentorship.

“Don’t worry about what others are doing in their goals, just try and beat yourself in your own passions and skills that allow for true joy to happen,” advised Raelene.

Cardinals fight fire and crime on the field

On June 28, a crowd of fans gathered to cheer on their local “town” heroes as the Special Olympics Alberta Camrose affiliate Cardinals softball team took on members of the Camrose Fire Department and Camrose Police Service. Not long into the action, umpire Ryan Poole decided the CFD and CPS players needed an “edge” down on the competition that included a branch and pool noodle filling in for bats, buckets filling in for helmets and some rather unorthodox uniform accessories. A good time was had by all.

Worldly quilting instructor

Quilting From the Heart was delighted to have international quilting instructor Sue Spargo come to Camrose and teach a week long course on Wool, Embellishment with Hand Embroidery.

appliqués, buttons and beads, to enhance quilting.

“I was originally a quilter (started in high school)” explained Sue. “Then I started into dying wool and I fell in love with the texture and fibre of wool.”

As for the intricate embroidery work that Sue was teaching during the course, she admitted it was purely accidental how she got into this part of the quilting embellishment. “I had never embroidered as a child I just started adding one or two stitches and I became fascinated how it changes the pieces (quilting squares). “Over the last 15 years I have taught myself to embroider. It is very meditating working with your hands.”

Sue has been instructing for the past 30 years and has done several courses in Calgary over the years, but this was her first time teaching in Camrose to a class of approximately 20 eager to learn local participants.

Sue, originally from South Africa, now resides in Ohio, where, along with family members, has owned and operated a web, retail and wholesale dyed wool business for 20 years, as well as offering courses internationally on the process of using dyed wools, and embellishment, including embroidery, ribbons,

Sue mentioned that some of the participants in this Camrose class were new to the concept but she usually has quite a few returning students.

For those who may not have been able to attend this session with Sue, Quilting From the Heart is planning another session in the Spring of 2024.

Woods stops in at Bailey

The Bailey Theatre snagged the opportunity to have Donovan Woods perform in Camrose on his way to perform at the Calgary Stampede.

“I get to play in Camrose before heading to the Stampede, so that is a win-win for me. It would be a drag to get the band together and travel to Alberta for just one show. So, we jumped at the chance to play in Camrose. We have never been to Camrose, so it should be fun,” said Donovan.

This Ontario recording artist has released several albums, won a Juno award. He is equally at home with country or folk. As an indemand songwriter whose work has been recorded by the likes of Tim McGraw (“Portland, Maine”), he has been venturing beyond the singer-songwriter scene and into going on stage.

“After traveling and rehearsal, all the band wants to do is play. It will be a difference playing in the old theatre as compared to the Stampede. I like to play smaller places and even perform by myself, but we had to bring everyone together for the Stampede, so going to Camrose made sense for us,” Donovan explained.

Donovan has connected with his collaborators and imparted the intimacy so many of us craved during a global health crisis. It was so successful that it led to a deluxe edition of Without People in 2021.

“We don’t play that loud and to be honest, I’m more of a folk singer than a country artist anyway. In fact, I like to write songs more than play. But people have encouraged me to get out there and sing my own songs,” Donovan added.

Listen to this talented Canadian musician at the Bailey Theatre on Saturday, July 8 at 7:30 p.m.

“This year I went to Europe by myself without the band, so this will be a

change. Last year, we toured across Canada to promote our album. We are working on a new album now, so the concert will be a mix of old songs and some new material,” shared Donovan.

“I like to keep the music

current, but people want to hear some of the old songs. I will play some songs that we won’t get the chance to play in Calgary. My favourite part is creating something new. I didn’t plan on singing. I wanted to write instead. I write country songs for other people, but I’m more of a folk artist,” aid Donovan.

“I love all kinds of music. Like everyone else my age, I was raised on hip hop and rap. I like everything,” he added.

“I’m excited to be out west again and in Alberta. I was born in Sarnia, but live in Toronto. I’m excited to be able to go to Camrose.”

The automotive section of Desrochers found his dream Firebird

of Stettler owns a 1968 Pontiac Firebird convertible.

“I always wanted one when I was younger. My dad had a mechanic friend who was selling this car. We went and looked at it and my dad said no way. But, I knew the person that bought it. I went back to my home town in 1998 and was talking to this girl who was married to the guy that bought this car. It was a guy that I went to school with so I looked at the car and took it home,” explained Steve.

The Pontiac Firebird is an American automobile that was built and produced by Pontiac from the 1967 to 2002 model years.

“I had to completely redo the floor and virtually every nut and bolt on it. I added a new engine and drive train. Here it is 22 years later,” he said.

Designed as a pony car to compete with the Ford Mustang, it was introduced on February 23, 1967, five months after GM’s Chevrolet division’s platform-sharing Camaro.

“I have a 400 small block engine that is balanced and blue printed that says I have 500 horsepower. It has a TKO fivespeed transmission. It was originally a 400 with a fourspeed so similar. I drive the car everywhere we go and

took it to BC,” Steve said.

The name Firebird was also previously used by GM for the General Motors Firebird in the 1950s and early 1960s concept cars.

“I really like the fact that I put the work into it

FUN FACTS

Both a two-door hardtop and a convertible were offered through the 1968-69 model years. Originally, the car was a consolation prize for Pontiac, which had desired to produce a two-seat sports car based on its original Banshee concept car.

However, GM feared this would cut into Chevrolet Corvette sales and gave Pontiac a piece of the pony car market by sharing the F-body platform with Chevrolet. The listed retail price before options for the coupe was $2,666 and the convertible was $2,903.

Modifications for 1968 included the addition of federally-mandated side marker lights: for the front of the car, the turn signals were made larger and extended to wrap around the front edges of the car, and on the rear, the Pontiac (V-shaped) Arrowhead logo was added to each side.

The front door vent-windows were replaced with a single pane of glass and Astro Ventilation, a fresh-airinlet system. All 1967–68 400 CI engines had throttle restrictors that blocked the carburetors’ secondaries from fully opening. A Ram Air option was also available, providing functional hood scoops, higher flow heads with stronger valve springs, and a hotter camshaft. The 1969 model received a major facelift with a new front-end design.

to restore, so it feels like my car. It means something to me. It also has a lot of curb appeal. I wanted a Firebird because it was the one I couldn’t have. You always want what you can’t have,” laughed Steve.

“It took me three years to restore it. I even had my high school daughter help me sand it. Having a convertible is a bonus on hot days,” added Steve.

“I had to work hard to get the car done, but there were times when things went well and that is when you want to keep at it. Sometimes you want to walk away,” he laughed.

“It was an entire family project (with wife Norma), so that makes it even more special. You can get most of the parts fairly easy. As I was stripping it down, I found out it was a mess. It needed new floor boards, so basically right back to the frame. It had tons and tons of rust,” said Steve.

The first generation Firebird had characteristic Coke bottle styling shared

with its cousin, the Chevrolet Camaro.

“The car was solar red from the factory, so now it is called volcanic red. It has a fine layer of silver, painted and clear coated,”

he added.

“It is a fun car to drive and I’m happy to have it. We did everything ourselves except the paint so that makes it worthwhile.”

Horticulture Society volunteers keep the city in bloom

The Camrose and District Horticulture Society (Camrose Hort Club) took advantage of the extended warm weather and lack of precipitation to complete some pruning and cleaning up of gardens around Camrose.

“We have now completed trimming the roses near the Bill Fowler Centre,” noted Camrose Hort Club president Janine Carroll. “And we trimmed back the peonies at the Centennial Museum and vow to get them in the autumn in the future.”

Club members are also back at the Rosehaven Courtyard tidying up the gardens so residents can take advantage of the joy and happiness they bring.

“It has a special significance to the Hort Club. We’ve been helping maintain it for so many years. I’m not sure how many, but long before I became involved.”

Carroll said that this particular project had special meaning to some of the long-time members of the day, including: Nan Shute, Anna-Mae Fedema, Joan Tod and Annabel Omoth. “When I joined, some 20 years ago, they headed up the work crews but they have all passed now.”

Other long-time mem-

bers who are unable to help as much as they used to, are passing down the tools of the trade–“trimming shears and trowels” supporting new members in the quest to make Camrose a beautiful community.

“We are also helping at the gardens at Louise Jensen,” said Carroll. “They have a couple of hidden gems where the residents can enjoy some fresh air and sunshine. Six of the members from the Hort Club were able to get in there and do some work. It’s amazing what six workers can do in a short time - weeding and deadheading. In about 20 minutes we had two garbage bags of garden waste.”

There is never a shortage of weeds that need to be “weeded” out, which keeps members of the Hort Club very busy. They visit the two sets of gardens at the Louise Jensen residences every other Tuesday morning and every other Friday morning tend to gardens at the Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park.

“All the gardens are so lovely, it’s a joy to be part of them.”

There are six to eight Hort Club members that tend to community gardens on a regular basis and others that come out when

schedules allow.

“We want to extend an invitation to community folks, especially those who moved into apartments or condos and miss their garden, to come out and join us in the gardens,” invited Carroll. “They don’t have to join the Hort Club, unless they want to which we would love. It’s calming and such a great social time.”

And while Carroll said the members don’t work hard, they do work happy.

Other Hort Club up-

coming events include the annual Rose and Lily show planned for Thursday, July 20 at the Masonic Hall located at 5021-48 Street. “As usual, we’re worried the hot weather will bring on the flowers early. We stress over this every year but it seems to work out and we’re hoping that the community will once again support it as in the past.”

The Camrose and District Horticulture Society will also be hosting an Alberta Horticultural Asso-

ciation Judges course on the last weekend of July.

The Hort Club meets the first Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Camrose Railway Station, from March until October. “Our upcoming meeting features a talk from a local entrepreneur, David Wesley speaking about vermicomposting.”

CWSS presents a session on bats

by some and revered by others, nature’s amazing winged nightflyers, bats, have a reputation, albeit somewhat unfounded, that precedes them.

On July 6 at 7 p.m., come out to the Stoney Creek Centre (5320-36 Avenue) for the Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society and City of Camrose sixth free session in the summer line-up featuring a presentation on bats.

Presenter Ciara Fraser from the Edmonton and Area Land Trust will be providing information that is likely to bust a few myths and maybe even cre-

ate a few new admirers with the Going Batty For Bats presentation.

The Edmonton and Area Land Trust works to protect natural areas to benefit wildlife and people, and to conserve biodiversity and all nature’s values, for everyone forever.

According to National Geographic (Kids) website there are over 1,300 species of bats around the world with some weighing less than a penny and others with a wingspan measuring 1.8 metres.

While many people have a fear or dislike for bats perhaps realizing that some bats can consume up

to 1,200 mosquitoes in an hour during their nightly hunts and that they are an extremely important part of the earth’s ecosystem as vital pollinators of hundreds of plant species, may help to have a change of heart.

If still in doubt check out the CWSS presentation on July 6 and while there be sure to put your name into the draw (to be drawn during the last session on August 3) for a chance to win prizes donated by local businesses.

For more information on the summer events offered from now until August 3 email wildlife stewardship@camrose.ca

Arnold Baker

Arnold Baker of Camrose, formerly of Edberg, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on June 25, 2023.

He is survived by his wife Joan (Robinson); children Kevin Baker and Sheila (Darren) Herle; grandchildren Riki, Kaine, Carla, Kazimir, Mika, Luke, Effy, Rhys and Rhiana; as well as nine great-grandchildren.

Arnold was born in Neepawa, Manitoba. He and Joan retired to Camrose in 1993, and lived for several years in the Hart House with Joan’s mother. Every day in his new home, in this beautiful town, he would walk around the lake or strap on skies or snowshoes and take to the creekside trails.

Arnold loved being in the mountains, skiing, hiking and camping; as well as spending time with his family. He had great care and concern for the environment. He was a reader and a writer; he thought and argued passionately about the difficult issues of our time. Several of his letters appeared in this newspaper. People who knew him will remember a great, serious and good-humoured conversationalist and storyteller.

He had been an engineer, a farmer and a math teacher, and was always designing something – a flying machine, a utopian community. He built and sailed a ship across Pigeon Lake, from Silver Beach to Ma-Me-O.

The family will hold a private celebration of his life.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results!

Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again. Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Summer handivan hours are now in effect on Saturdays

The Rose City Handivan Society is offering a summer special.

Summer Saturdays are being offered every Saturday from now until August 26. Clients can book rides on the handivan to any destination within the city, for any time between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

“We do ask that all rides are booked by 4 p.m. the Thursday prior. The best part is that a one way ride is only $5,” said Maureen Foss, coordinator of the handivans.

Riders can call the handivan office at 780-6728777 to book, or for more information.

“We hope that this will allow more people to spend some time with family and friends, out in the community,” she added.

Co-op members donate to wildfire relief

Wild Rose Co-op members raised $5,000 for wildfire relief.

The community-focused organization raised funds for the Northwestern Emergency Fund for Wildfire Assistance. The funds were collected through generous donations at three food stores and two gas bars in the local area.

The outstanding response from members is a testament to the caring and compassionate nature of the communities they serve.

Wild Rose Co-op remains dedicated to serving and supporting local communities. They have outlets in Camrose, Killam, Sedgewick, Viking, Galahad, Alliance, Hardity and Tofield.

Spaghetti dinner organizers celebrate first year success

The first year of the Camrose Community Spaghetti Dinner drew to a close on June 28.

“We started the dinner with our first one on August 31 last year. We wanted a break before starting our second year on September 6,” said Bonnie Cooke, who launched the idea with Holly McIndoe.

“We served 5,300 adults and 1,010 children over the 10 months with 82 volunteers. Our oldest is 94 and our youngest volunteer was nine,” added Bonnie.

Besides the regular volunteers, members of the Vikings and Kodiaks sports teams volunteered some weeks.

“We went through 120

pounds of hamburger. We received generous donations from East Side Mario’s, Wild Rose Foodservice Distributors, Purity Bottled Water and Bev and Cliff Drever, who donated the beef,” explained Bonnie.

The dinners were held at the Loyal Order of the Moose and the service club also accepts donations for the dinner.

“Jen and Joe Schulte come here every week as part of their date night. They are celebrating their 70th anniversary in August. Joe, 92, and Jen, 90, look forward to coming here every week. It is Joe’s night off from cooking,” shared Holly and Bonnie.

The dinner on Wednes-

day evenings from 5 to 7 p.m. were launched with the rising costs of food.

“We came up with the idea of offering anyone in our community the opportunity to come out and enjoy a free, nutritious spaghetti supper,” explained Bonnie, when they started.

Volunteers start preparing the meals at 4 p.m. at the Moose Lodge (500152 Avenue)

The supper is open to anyone wishing to attend with hopes that members of the community can meet and talk to others.

For more information on volunteering or donating to the Spaghetti Dinner contact Bonnie at 780-672-1026 or Holly at 780-679-3960.

The Battle River Community Foundation awarded grants totaling $13,550 to KidSport Camrose.

The grant is from the Foundation’s Community Fund and from the Troy Berg Memorial Fund, Max and Lois McLean Fund, the Margaret and Bob Prestage Fund, the Fred and Donna Vanouck Fund, the Lions Club of Camrose Legacy Fund and the Zetsen Master Builders Minor Sports Fund.

All of these Funds were established to support youth participation in athletics.

KidSport Camrose provides grants of up to $350 per eligible child each year to assist with the cost of sport registration fees. KidSport can also give referrals to a partner agency that can assist with obtaining necessary equipment for participation in sport.

The Foundation grants will assist more than 35 children from the city and county to register for the sports programs they love.

The Battle River Community Foundation exists

to support organizations in East Central Alberta, which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment

funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $8,216,000 to support charitable activities in the Battle River Region.

CAMPING EDITION

Camping – the only "vacation" where you work harder preparing meals and caring for your living space than you do in your own house.

If "camping" means my hotel room faces the woods, then yeah, I'll go camping

I don't know who needs to hear this, but living your life to the fullest does not have to involve hiking

Camping is great if you're craving a horrible night's sleep

Spouse: "What's your favourite thing to bring camping?"

Me: "An oceanfront hotel room."

My family went camping without me, and felt bad that I would be missing out. Oh please, don't leave me home alone in a quiet house with Wi-Fi, electricity and running water!

Everybody makes mistakes their rst camping trip For star ters, going camping

Things I have not enjoyed on my family camping trip so far:

• Family

• Camping

Pre-marriage counselling should include putting up a tent together

One of my main goals as a parent is to provide my kid with enough amenities that she would never ask me to take her camping

Packing to take your t wo-year-old camping for three days is roughly the same as packing up your entire home to move across the country forever

It isn't a coincidence that almost all horror movies involve camping.

Central Agencies Realty Home of the Week Well maintained family home

Located in a quiet cul de sac close to a school, green spaces and walking trails, this five-bedroom, three-bathroom home is the perfect fit for your family.

This home has been maintained beautifully starting from the neat curb appeal and continuing inside to the warm wood floors and finishes.

The entryway leads into the front living room featuring coved ceilings and bayed seating. Adjacent to the living room is an area for formal dining with another bayed window, where a buffet or china cabinet would look stunning.

The kitchen features a lot of warm wood cabinets and a corner pantry for tons of storage. A centre island faces into the breakfast nook and would be great for a buffet-style dinner when extended family or friends are over. A window over the sink and windows in the breakfast nook flood the area with warm bright sunlight.

The main floor primary bedroom has a private three-piece en suite and large double closets.

Two more bedrooms, one with con-

venient laundry hookup offering an option of a home office/laundry combination, and a four-piece bathroom finish the upper level.

Step out from the kitchen/breakfast nook onto the deck and enjoy looking over the gorgeous backyard.

The fully completed lower level is done in the same beautiful finishes and has a large family room for your big screen television with an adjacent games room that could easily house a pool table.

Two more bedrooms and a threepiece bathroom are an ideal space for older children or for grandparents needing some privacy while visiting.

Enjoy outdoor living in the fully fenced and landscaped backyard where the family can gather around a fire pit and take in splendid summer evenings. This well-maintained bungalow, located at 308 Parkridge Close and priced at $459,900, is ready for you to settle down. For a private viewing, contact Matthew Mayer at:

Camping in my 20s: "I feel like I'm one with nature. I just can't imagine anything more rewarding."

Camping in my 50s: "I hope to God a snake bites me and I die."

My husband just told me he wants a divorce

Actually his exact words were, "I think it would be cool for the whole family to live in an RV and travel the countr y for a year," but tomato, to-mah-to.

Arrived at a campsite in darkness and thought it was aw ful. No toilets, no water, loads of rust y farm machiner y around. Now it's daylight and it turns out we pitched our tent on a farm and the campsite is another kilometre away.

Hike in groups. Bears like to have options.

My wife: "You really have no sense of direction, do you?" Me: "Where did that come from?"

Camping – when you spend a small for tune to live like a homeless person.

What do bears call campers in sleeping bags? Sof t tacos.

My wife says, "We have to go camping! It's a tradition in my family."

It was a tradition in ever y family until they invented the house.

Always hike with someone who is in worse shape than you are. There are bears out there, you know!

An uneducated father with his educated son went on a camping trip. They set up their tent and fell asleep. Some hours later, the father woke his son up

Father: "Look up at the sky and tell me what you see."

Son: "I see millions of stars."

Father: "And what does that tell you?"

Son: "Astronomically, it tells me there are millions of galaxies and planets."

Father: "No, son, it tells you that someone has stolen our tent."
