Electric ice resurfacer promotes sustainability

In a commitment to continually find ways to be stewards of the environment and maintain sustainability, the City of Camrose recently acquired a new electric ice resurfacer that will be used at City owned arenas.

City administration explained that this investment, supported by the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC) including a grant of $48,900 towards purchase of the ice resurfacer, represents a step towards a greener future for the community, demonstrating the City’s dedication to making environmentally conscious choices in its operations.

The “OLYMPIA Millennium E,” designed with cutting-edge technology, replaced the previous outdated natural gas-powered model. It is driven by four AC electric wheel motors and is the only electric machine that provides over 30 floods per charge.

The cost of operating an OLYMPIA Millennium E is one tenth of the cost of a standard propane or natural gas ice resurfacer.

According to Infrastructure general manager, Kristofer Johnson priority is being given to having environmentally friendly equipment in the City’s fleet. “As stewards of our community’s infrastruc-

ture, it is crucial that we remain mindful of the environmental impact of our purchasing decisions. By selecting equipment that is powered by alternative energy sources, such as our new electric ice resurfacer, we actively contribute to the well-being of our environment and the long-term sustainability of our city.”

Community Services general manager Ryan Poole, expressed enthusiasm for the new addition, stating that this new purchase will also improve the air quality within the building. “By transitioning to electric technology we’re eliminating carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide pollution inside the arenas that’s emitted by the traditional internal combustion engines.”

With City staff already trained on the operation of the ice resurfacer, residents will soon see it in action at the Encana arena.

In an effort to add a little fun and excitement to the introduction of the new ice resurfacer, Poole encourages residents to stay tuned to City social media for the announcement of the upcoming Naming of the New Ice Resurfacer Contest.

Just throwme a parade!

Imagine having a community that comes together in celebration of your birthday–with a parade. Well, Brad Lyseng of Armena didn’t have to imagine, all he had to do was ask.

On July 15, residents of Armena, including family, friends and others, came together to celebrate and support Brad on his 40th birthday, and what began as a wish made true by his family, flourished into a bigger celebration of family, community and love.

“When we asked Brad what he wanted for his 40th birthday, he said a parade,” said mother Terry. “What do you do for your child with special needs on their 40th birthday? We thought this was perfect.”

It didn’t take a lot of convincing for Armena residents to come on board either, and what started out as a way to celebrate Brad, grew into a celebration of anyone born in 1983, but more importantly the spirit of community.

“We had nine 40 year olds from Armena and surrounding areas come out and be honoured in the parade,” laughed Terry, who said the whole idea was to bring some joy and happiness to the community and, for that matter, the world.

The parade featured a slew of kiddos riding bikes decked out with balloons and other birthday decor; beautiful horses and riders; vintage farm equipment and other vehicular oddities; vehicles donning balloons and banners; parade walkers in costumes, including clowns, camels and ghosts; appearances by some not-so-famous ‘famous” people such as Elvis, Dr. Emmett Brown (Doc) and the newest 007; and a float featuring a local band playing for close to 200 people who lined both sides of Armena’s Main Street.

Front and centre was Brad himself (top left photo), proudly wearing a crown and cape, dubbed the King of the Parade.

People from not only Armena and surrounding areas, but areas even further away including St. Albert, Red Deer and Edmonton also joined in on the excitement, placing lawn chairs along the parade route, cheering and clapping, simply enjoying an excuse to come together in celebration and watch a parade.

If happiness was Terry and other parade committee members’ goal, they succeeded. There was nary a frown to be found.

That is the beautiful thing about these smaller rural communities–people taking the time to know their neighbours and, more importantly, look out for them. A sense of belonging and a show of support, and a parade on a warm summer Saturday afternoon. Why not?

CWSS presents a session, Trees in Camrose

Tucked deep in your foliage critters seek shelter, while under your canopy I seek shade, and through your existence the world breaths easier, oh glorious tree for so many reasons you’ve been made.

On July 27, join others to learn about the invaluable contributions trees make to our world, during the ninth Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society (CWSS) and City of Camrose summer session, Trees in Camrose: A Path to Improving our Economy, Health and Wellbeing, presented by the Camrose Green Action Committee.

The free presentation

will begin at 7 p.m. at the Stoney Creek Centre (532039 Avenue).

“There are many responses we can make to climate change,” explained City of Camrose Greenspace and Wildlife Stewardship coordinator Brooklyn Swain. “The least expensive and most beneficial to us in Camrose is to simply plant more trees.”

When most people think of what trees contribute the first things that may come to mind is providing much appreciated shade on hot days and habitat and food sources for a plethora of creatures. However, they also purify the air we breath and help

combat climate change, cool our streets and cities, protect against flooding and water pollution and have been proven to ease stress.

On July 27, come out and learn more about the importance of trees and how we all can help to maintain and grow their existence.

Attendees of any CWSS session are welcome to put their name into the draw for a chance to win prizes, donated by local businesses, drawn during the final event to be held on August 3.

For more information on the summer events offered from now until August 3, email wildlife stewardship@camrose.ca

Camrose Helps identifying community needs

Under the umbrella of Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), Camrose and District Support Services (CDSS), in collaboration with other community agencies, continues the ongoing development of Camrose Helps, a project designed to ensure the residents of the City of Camrose and Camrose County have a safe and supportive community where they can thrive.

The concept of the Camrose Helps project was created in October of 2022 as a collective agenda of agencies and support organizations to identify and define the various needs of the community(s).

Since October Camrose Helps has been working to move the needle on the social issues facing members of the community(s).

“This project included the lived experience,” explained Collective Impact Engagement and Partnership coordinator Heather Barr. “A focused engagement with the community about transportation transpired in February and a rural housing needs assessment was completed at the end of March.”

Barr added that since then the project has been quiet on the public side, but building momentum with the design of several initiatives. “The execution of these initiatives is forth coming and we are excited as these initiatives unfold and come to fruition.”

The proposed initiatives are focused on making a positive impact on the community while leveraging collaboration between agencies.

“This brings about efficiencies and the best possible service,” noted FCSS executive director Lyndel Kasa. “It is innovative and follows the Collective Impact Model, a model that brings together interested agencies, organizations or people who have a desire to shift the complex social issues facing our community. Using the model of a common agenda and shared values we are able to use collective knowledge and experience to bring about positive change.”

Barr said that while the passion to build the project

Plan Now For Their Future Needs

You’ve worked your entire life to build your assets. Sound estate planning can ensure these hard-ear ned assets are passed on to your family according to your wishes, without interference. Talk to us today about developing a plan that makes sense for you and your loved ones.

Pre-planning for tomorrow means peace of mind for today

The idea of advance funeral planning is one which many people would rather not think about. However, planning your own funeral is one of the kindest things you can do for your loved ones. At a time of grief, your family members will be spared the stress of making important, emotionally draining decisions.

is strong the biggest barrier facing the implementation with some of these initiatives is securing adequate or sustainable funding.

“We are working with community partners to try and secure applicable funding and we are exploring different fundraising models.”

The initial focus of the group has been around transportation, a need that has been identified by residents both within the City of Camrose and Camrose County.

“We recognize the importance of having accessible and affordable transportation opportunities to get people to the places they need to go,” said Barr.

“Transportation is more than just providing trips for people who need to attend medical appointments. There is research that identifies the importance for well being and the mental health for members of a community to have access to reliable and affordable transportation.

“Being able to easily access recreation, employ-

ment, shopping, childcare opportunities and medical appointments were all identified as needs facing people in our community. And finding some solutions to help support addressing these needs has been a priority of the Interagency group.”

Currently, in collaboration with the other agencies, Camrose Helps is working on an initiative that will utilize volunteers to help provide support for an affordable transportation opportunity.

“ We are in the stages of trying to build our volunteer base and have been attending public spaces to engage with potential volunteers,” noted Barr. “If you like to drive and have your own vehicle and have some extra time, we would love to hear from you.”

Camrose Helps will be announcing the launch of the initiative in upcoming weeks and encourages anyone interested in volunteering for this program to contact Barr at heather@camrosefcss.ca

Pre-planning also ensures your final arrangements will be carried out according to your exact wishes, in a cost-sensitive manner. Call us today for more information about advance funeral planning or to arrange a no-obligation consultation with one of our directors.

It’s recommende d to soften the build up with either olive oil, mineral oil, or prescription drops for softening wax; sometimes for several days/nights, before removal is at tempte d. People who have a hole in their eardrum can only have wa x remove d with suction. Secondly, to as sist your ears to remain free of earwax build ups, you can use earwax-sof tening drops to the a ec ted ear(s), on a regular schedule This will keep the wax from hardening, which prevents it from building up on itself. The exception to this rule are those of us who have holes in their eardrum. These individuals mu st rely on regular ear canal inspections, and professional removal as needed

Wiik will perform folk, jazz, Irish and even some Norwegian music beginning at 8 p.m.

Wiik adds Norway touch to music

The Bailey Theatre has a great line-up of shows planned for this season. Here are some of the highlights.

Magnus Wiik performs at the Bailey Theatre for a show on July 29 at 8 p.m.

He is a musician based in Rauland, Norway. Originally a guitarist, he is now in-demand on a multitude of instruments: banjo, mandolin, dobro, fiddle, pedal-steel guitar, Irish flute, piano, cello and double bass.

“It is nice to be back in Canada. Last time, was back before the pandemic. I came for Christmas, my wife is from Calgary. I originally came to Canada for a Banff workshop back in 2007. I always really liked Canada. There are some differences in music. People here tend to have a curiosity in what I am doing. I didn’t start out playing Norwegian music, but people asked for it so I added some songs to go along with some Irish songs and even a few from Cape Breton,” explained Magnus.

Magnus started with rock and metal in his teens, before finding his way into jazz and improvisation in high school. During this time, he discovered Irish folk music and bluegrass, and fell head over heels in love with both traditions.

“I teach some Norwegian music back home, so since this community is Norwegian, I will play a few songs for them. It is cool when people ask for the music. Nice to share some of that history and music,” Magnus suggested.

Misfits is Magnus’ third solo album, following the sister albums Rad and Trad from 2020. Where those albums had a broad instrumental palette, Misfits concentrates on the core bluegrass band with guitar, mandolin, banjo, fiddle, double bass, threepart harmony vocals and dobro on one track. The music is placed in a modern bluegrass/Americana soundscape and the album spans eight originals and

an overture.

“I will be playing some selections from all three of my albums. I play a few instruments as well as singing,” he said.

The work began in isolation in January, 2022. With a few ideas, a couple of square metres studio space and volatile Internet, a positive covid test started the recording process. Gathering inspiration from modern bluegrass artists such as Crooked Still and Noam Pikelny as well as older sources such as Doc Watson and Tommy Jarrell you can hear a broad palette of American traditional music in Wiik’s own compositions.

“I was excited to book at the Bailey Theatre. I haven’t been there before, but it looked like a nice

place to play.”

Misfits is both dark and hopeful, driving and dreaming and uses a broad soundscape within the modern bluegrass sound, at times alluding to the modern Nordic jazz-scene that he is a part of.

Wiik has toured across the globe with his own projects and as a sideman on a wide array of instruments for 20 years. He has been awarded prizes, released more than 10 albums of original music and performed on some of the biggest stages for this music in Europe.

The automotive section of Impala celebrates wedding anniversary

“I found this car at a garage sale, if you can believe that. They were selling everything because the guy had passed away in Donalda. We just went to the garage sale to see what was there. I saw the car there and purchased it right away,” explained Gary.

The Chevrolet Impala was a full-size car built by Chevrolet for model years 1958 to 1985, 1994 to 1996, and 2000 to 2020. The Impala was Chevrolet’s popular flagship passenger car and was among the betterselling American-made automobiles in the United States.

“When we were married in 1972, I owned a 1965 Pontiac convertible, which was a very similar vehicle (Parisienne). It was the same in everything. This car brought some memories for me, so that was the main reason for getting the car. The car we used for the wedding was a convertible, so this was a good match,” shared Gary.

The Chevrolet Caprice was introduced as a topline Impala Sport Sedan for model year 1965, later becoming a separate series positioned above the Impala in 1966, which, in

turn, remained above the Chevrolet Bel Air and the Chevrolet Biscayne.

“We call it the anniversary car because we bought it a week after our anniversary. We have been married for 50 years (last

FUN FACTS

All new full-size Chevrolets eschewed the X frame for a full-width perimeter frame, a new body that featured curved, frameless side glass (for pillarless models), sharper angled windshield with newly reshaped vent windows, and redesigned full-coil suspension.

In 1965, Chevrolet introduced a new luxury package for the Impala four-door hardtop, called “Caprice” and coded as RPO Z18. Caprices received tufted upholstery, wood grained accents on the dashboard and specialty pulls on the insides of the doors. This halo model also featured the “spinner” wheel covers from the Impala SS, with the SS logo centers replaced by a Chevrolet bowtie emblem. The Super Sport’s blackout rear trim strip below the triple taillights was also used, with the Impala SS emblem replaced by a large Caprice by Chevrolet badge. The Impala block lettering on each front fender was replaced with Caprice script. The Caprice package was reintroduced as the Chevrolet Caprice Custom in 1966, taking the top position in the full-size Chevrolet lineup.

Engine choices included the inline six-cylinder as well as the small-block and big-block V8s. A new threerange Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission was optional for 396 cubic inch (6.5 L) V8. The old 409 cubic inch (6.7 L) “W” engine was discontinued early in 1965.

summer), so we bought the car in that honour,” said Gary.

“I like the colour, white with blue pearl. The interior has been re-done, so this car is in great condition. I had to do very little to the car, not that much actually. It had spoked rims on it and lowered. I took those off and put on some really nice mag wheels with new whitewalls. I tried to make it look original again,” said Gary.

The Impala name was first used for the full-sized 1956 General Motors Motorama show car that bore Corvette-like design cues, especially the grille. It was named Impala after the graceful African antelope, which was used as the car’s logo.

“The motor is not original. It has a 350 motor in it now, but the transmission needs replacing. I plan on getting one similar to the one it has now. Originally, it had a 327 motor, which was standard for the car at the time. The other car

that I had when we were married had a 327 engine as well,” revealed Gary.

“The console floor shifter is in between the seats. It doesn’t have power windows, but does have power brakes. This car is

absolutely beautiful,” added Gary.

Redesigned in 1965, the Impala set an alltime industry annual sales record of more than one million units in the United States.

Monument Maintenance

Jean Dolores Hamilton

June 5, 1936 ~ July 19, 2023

Jean Dolores Hamilton was born to Nord and Ellen Pederson of Daysland, on June 5, 1936. She was raised on the family farm in the Montrose district, along with two younger sisters. Jean was a strong student and a very capable girl, who was adept at cooking, chores and child-minding at a very early age.

Jean enjoyed a happy 68-year marriage to her sweetheart, Lorne Hamilton. They married in 1955, and to that union were born five children: Connie, Diane, Terry, Colleen and Brian. Jean’s family was treated to fresh baking almost daily, as Jean excelled at producing fresh bread, buns, angel food cakes, and her world-famous cinnamon buns for her family every day at 3:45. Jean was active in her community, teaching Sunday School, serving with the UCW, the Recreation Board and the Daysland Cemetery.

Lorne and Jean retired early to enjoy travel and to spend more time with their family. They took numerous cruises, made many new friends while wintering in Arizona for 18 years, and visited their kids as often as they could.

Jean derived a great deal of pleasure from her 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She was the provider of big meals, ice cream, back scratches, warmed bedtime blankets and the operation of a memorable summer camp known as “Kid Week”, when all 12 grandkids, plus a few extras, would stay at the farm without their parents.

In 2015, Jean and Lorne moved from the farm near Daysland, where they had resided for 37 years, to Camrose, where they remained until Jean’s passing.

Jean is survived by her loving husband Lorne; children Diane, Terry (Ellie), and Colleen (Art); 11 grandchildren Warren, Carla, Greg, Aaron, Mark, Neil, Candace, Chelsea, Amanda, Richard and Christie, and their spouses; and 22 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, as well as her son Brian; daughter Connie; granddaughter Andrea; sister Noreen; and son-inlaw Dwayne Lassu.

A Funeral Service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2023, from the Our Lady of the Prairies Roman Catholic Church, officiated by Susan Mackinnon.

If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Jean’s memory may be made to Daysland Cemetery Fund or to S.T.A.R.S. Air Ambulance.

Lillian Heather (Pederson) Wiberg

May 15, 1939 ~ July 18, 2023

Lillian Wiberg passed on to her eternal home on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at the age of 84 years.

Lillian Heather was born on May 15, 1939, to Henry and Mary Pederson of Bawlf, Alberta. She grew up on the family farm there with her older brother Harvey. Growing up on the farm, Lillian cultivated a love of gardening with her beloved mother, and a love for animals from her father. Her dad even allowed her to keep a pet skunk she rescued.

In 1957, at the age of 18, Lillian enrolled in a one-year program at a junior college on the U of A campus in Edmonton and trained to be a teacher. She first taught in Armena and then Bawlf. In 1965, she was hired by the Catholic School Board to teach at St. Pat’s in Camrose. Here she would teach Grade Two for a total of 20 years until her retirement in 1985. Up until her death, Lillian had many former students tell her that she was “my favorite teacher.” This was a phrase she heard often. And remarkably, she fondly remembered each one of her students. Teaching was her passion, her gifting, and a career that brought her incredible joy.

In 1977, Lillian became a wife and a mother when she married the love of her life, Melvin Wiberg, a widower with four teenagers. They were married on February 5, 1977, in New Norway, and spent the next 36 years madly in love until Mel’s passing in 2013. This period of time would be the happiest days of Lillian’s life. You would never see her without her beloved Mel, and the two of them could be seen around town, holding hands and in matching outfits. They relished their annual trips to Las Vegas during the winter, and loved gardening on the farm in the summer. They were truly two lovebirds.

In recent years, Lillian’s health declined and she spoke often of her wish to reunite with her beloved Mel in Heaven.

Lillian is survived by her children Dale (Heather) Wiberg, Doreen (Darcy) Thompson, and Colleen Schneider; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; her brother Harvey (Mildred) Pederson; and many nieces, nephews and their families.

Lillian was predeceased by her beloved husband Melvin Wiberg; and her eldest daughter Marlene Pollock.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at CityLights Church, 4920-48 Street, Camrose, officiated by Pastor Jeremy Osterwalder.

If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Lillian’s memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

The children of Lillian Wiberg would like to thank the amazing staff of Seasons Lodge and Camrose Home Care for their compassionate care of our mom, especially in this last year. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com

Jane Stad

Jane, the eldest daughter of Clarence and Jentina Stad, was born in Smithers in northern BC, on April 14, 1963. She attended Ebenezer Christian School from kindergarten to grade 12. After graduation, she waited one year for her sister Alida to graduate so they could attend the Canadian Reformed Teachers’ College together. They travelled by Greyhound bus to Hamilton, Ontario, and completed the three-year program in 1985. When they graduated, they both moved to Manitoba, where they obtained teaching jobs with Jane teaching kindergarten for over 20 years. The sisters spent summers together prepping and decorating classrooms. After Jane’s teaching career, she caught back up with Alida in Alberta, and lived with her and her family for two years in Grande Prairie. After this, she lived with her brother Theo in the Camrose area for six years.

Jane’s health declined rapidly over the last year of her life. She spent a few months in Tofield Hospital and the long-term care centre. She passed peacefully with family by her side at the Grey Nuns Hospital.

She is survived by her four younger siblings, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at the Resurrection Lutheran Brethren Church in Camrose, Alberta, with Pastor Jeremy Osterwalder officiating.

Marjorie Hendrickson

Marjorie Hendrickson of Camrose, Alberta, passed away on July 18, 2023, at the age of 92 years.

She is survived by her children

Dr. Monica (Wade) WicklandWeller, Michelle Grainger, Bart Wickland, Jacqueline (Marshall) Wideman, Annette Malley and Scott Wickland; seven grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren; and numerous relatives and friends.

Marjorie was predeceased by her husband Bruce; and her parents Michael and Sophie.

A celebration of life was held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 24, 2023, at Weber’s Mount Pleasant Chapel, Camrose. Memorial donations can be made to the charity of one’s choice.

What’s scarier? Thunder, lightning or the nude man?

I’m startled awake at 2:30 a.m. by a crack of thunder.

The storm continues flashing and banging–sheet lightning, low rumbling thunder, fork lightening, sharp thunderclaps that shake the window panes. Behind that, the sound of pounding rain.

Just as when I was a kid watching thunderstorms, I’m in that state of glorious enjoyment of the spectacle mixed with a tinge of fear at the awesome power of nature.

And, it being the middle of the night, I’m also sleepy. But I’m not going back to sleep what with all that banging and flashing.

My mind drifts to thunderstorms past...

***

July, sometime in the 1950s. Our family–two grown-ups and four kids–lives in a 625 square foot storey-and-a-half home in the brand new “west end” of Camrose (now considered part of central Camrose). Everyone on our block is in a newly-built home.

In these small-town days, nobody locks the house doors. There’s no need, and besides, it would just be a nuisance.

Our neighbours on the block are mostly young families, but the people next door, Mr. and Mrs. Windel, are an older couple–or at least, they seem old to me. Their grown children live far away. Mr. Windel’s job takes him away from home frequently and Mrs. Windel is left alone.

We’re friendly neighbours, but not in each other’s pockets. ***

It’s a hot July; lots of thunderstorms.

Even as a kid, not paying much attention to grown-ups, I can tell that Mrs. Windel’s fear of thunderstorms is not typical. Other people might not like thunderstorms much, or even be uncomfortable, but Mrs. Windel’s fear is something different.

On a sunny summer morning, she’s looking to the west, saying, “Looks like it’s clouding up. I hope there’s not a thunderstorm tonight.” And I can tell she’s going to be worried all day.

Our mom tells Mrs. Windel she’s welcome to come to our house during a thunderstorm if that would help. A couple of evenings, Mrs. Windel does, and goes home when the storm is over. Again, I can tell that the kind of fear Mrs. Windel is feeling is different from anything I’ve noticed in other grown-ups. As an adult, I’d say it was something like “primeval terror” but I didn’t have that language then. ***

In loving memory

Cecille Gauthier

June 19, 1950 ~ June 26, 2023

On June 26, 2023, Cecille Gauthier of Camrose, passed away at the Wetaskiwin Long Term Care, at the age of 73 years.

Cecille was born on June 19, 1950, in Kenyon, Ontario. At the age of two, the family moved to Manitoba, where they resided until Cecille was seven. They then moved to Alberta, living in numerous communities. At the age of 31, she settled in Camrose, where she has lived for the past 42 years.

Cecille is survived by her loving family; son, Derek Gauthier; brothers, Rolland (Grace) Gauthier and Maurice (Marlene) Gauthier; sisters, Yvonne Braun, Noella (Evert) Weitzel, twin sister Lucille (Will) OpdenKamp, Jean Kroeker (Lyle Blize), Rita Cadieux (Loui Cannford) and Lauraine Hager (Larry Holdner); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and many friends.

Cecille was predeceased by her brother, Raymond Gauthier; sisters, Pauline Griffiths, Sandra Ficsher and Debra Horton; and parents, Edward and Lauretta Cadieux.

“A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our heart to prove to us, He only takes the best.”

Honoured to Serve the Gauthier Family Baker Funeral Chapel, Wetaskiwin

How we miss the welcome footsteps

Of the one we loved so dear; Oft we listen for his coming, Fully sure that he is near. Thou art gone, but not forgotten, Fresh our love will ever be, For as long as there is memory, We will always think of thee. – Diana and Jason

It’s such a hot July that grown-ups are having trouble sleeping. After we kids are asleep upstairs, our parents decide that, rather than try to sleep in their hot cramped stuffy bedroom on the main floor, it would be cooler to sleep in the living room–right by the front door. They open up the davenport for a makeshift bed.

It’s too hot for blankets, though they do have sheets. They settle in for the night as best they can.

***

They are awakened in the night by a crack of thunder. And–within seconds–the sound of a shriek, as Mrs. Windel flings herself through the front door. She is terrified.

So is my dad. There’s a woman in the room who is not his wife–and underneath that sheet he’s wearing nothing at all. Trapped!

***

Clearly Mrs. Windel is not leaving until the storm is over. Our mom (who’s wearing a filmy but respectable nightgown) graciously offers tea and begins some distracting chat with Mrs. Windel. Dad stays on the davenport, clutching a sheet to his chest.

A few days later, I overhear my dad telling the story to a friend. “I think–I hope–she was too scared to notice there was a naked man in the room,” he says. And the two men laugh.

And no, my parents didn’t start locking the door after that.

***

So what’s your most memorable thunderstorm?

***

I’d love to hear from you. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send an email to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com . I’ll happily reply within two business days.

Lougheed art exhibit features travelling show

In partnership with The Alberta Society of Arts and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts provincial travelling exhibition program (TREX), the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre will be presenting the Urban Soul Art Exhibition from August 4 until August 30.

Curated by Jane Cherry, the exhibition features a collection of work by artists Rhys Douglas Farrell, Levin Ifko, Harvey Nichol, Sydonne Warren, Adrianne Williams and Tyler Wong.

The Urban Soul exhibition encourages attendees to see the world of art through the creativity of what has often been coined as street/ urban art or graffiti.

The six featured artists showcase their talent and artistic voice in a variety of mediums including skateboards, garments, road signs or a large mural-like panel.

Farrell lives and works in Calgary and has completed several public art project with the Telus Spark Science Centre, the Beltline Urban Murals Project and the City of Calgary not to mention several commissioned pieces.

One

Ifko is a multidisciplinary artist, writer and musician based in Calgary. A love of signage, which is incorporated into Ifko’s work, is attributed to the artist’s grandparents who operated a sign-making business for over 50 years.

Nichol is a multidisciplinary contemporary artist from Tondo, Manila, currently based out of Calgary. Nichol works in different mediums of expression, such as clothing design, 3-D printed sculptures and woodcut art.

Warren is a contemporary Jamaican-Canadian

Turcotte, of Camrose, on July 16, at 59 years of age.

Mervin Van Slyke, of Camrose, on July 17, at 92 years of age.

Summer Travels

Normal life: "I've been wearing this same pair of jeans all week long."

Packing for vacation: "Let's see, I'll probably change three times a day, so 32 out ts should work."

I asked to switch seats on the plane because I was sitting next to a cr ying baby. Apparently that's not allowed if the baby is yours.

Me: "I really want to travel this summer!"

My bank account: "Like … to the backyard?"

Backpack contents for a summer plane trip:

• Enough food and drinks for my kids to eat

for a month.

• One water for my wife and I to share.

The next time I go on a cross country ight with my kids, I'm just going to wear a pantsuit made of towels.

I accidentally activated Vacation Dad by telling my husband there is construction on our way to the airpor t. We are now leaving at 3 a.m. for a 5 p.m. ight. We live 30 minutes away.

My wife: "How does a summer trip to Disneyland with the kids sound?"

Me: "Sounds like we had a good run."

I don't of ten brag about my expensive trips, but I just returned home from the vet I actually do think a three-week long solo trip to southern Italy this summer would solve all my problems.

When preparing for your summer travels, lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then take half the clothes and twice the money. Why can't I nd a doctor who will prescribe "sea air" for my nerves so I can spend a summer in a picturesque coastal town in England for my health, only to be caught up in a local scandal and forced to solve a murder?

The last time I went on a hiking trip, I almost passed out from holding my breath as I passed a group of super t hikers so they wouldn't hear how I was truly ghting for my life while walking up the hill to the beginning of the trail.

I told my suitcases there would be no summer vacation this year, and now I'm dealing with emotional baggage

I need a six-month vacation twice a year

This would be the ideal property for horse owners, with plenty of outside pens, fenced pasture, 100’ x 300’ outdoor riding or barrel racing arena and two heated auto waterers.

The 50’ x 80’ quonset is currently being used as an indoor riding arena, but could be used as your shop along with indoor parking for your vehicles. The possibilities are limited only by your own wishes for this property located at 45350 Range Road 165 Rural Flagstaff County, and priced at $339,000. There should be sympathy cards for having to go back to work af ter your summer vacation is over.

"Splash me again and I'll drain ever y inch of water from this pool!"

– Me being the Super Fun Summer Mom

I promised myself I'd be earlier in the year

Everyone else's summer: "Amazing!"

Moms: "Ice cream was my saving grace."

My favourite exercise so far this summer is the one where I go all around the house and pick up all my kids' empty water bottles.

Motherhood is spending three hours packing up ever ything for the beach and forgetting your own swimsuit

I love every thing about summer except the long days, heat, humidity, vacations, carnivals, picnics, reworks and the kids being o school.

Sure, going for a run is a good workout, but have you ever gotten three kids in and out of their car seats on a hot day?

"Now what ?"

– My kid eating an ice cream cone holding a brand new toy riding a pony on the beach in the summer time sun
