Escape to a movie under the stars

On Saturday, September 2, enjoy reminiscing the era of “drive-in” movies with a “walk-in” rendition during the Alberta Days “Movie

Under the Stars” free event hosted by the City of Camrose Recreation and Culture Department, to be held on the grounds of the Camrose and District Centennial Museum. The event will run from 7:30 until 11 p.m., with movie start time at 8:30 p.m., and is open to everyone of all ages.

“Last year was the inaugural Alberta Day and we were so pleased to bring a ‘Movie Under the Stars’

to the community,” said City of Camrose Recreation and Culture manager Tanya Pattullo. “It was such a great success and everyone had so much fun, we decided to host it again.”

This year’s movie selection, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, promises as much fun and excitement with a fun cast including Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart and Jack Black.

The plot involves four high school students that discover an old video game console and are drawn into the game’s jungle setting, literally becoming the adult avatars they chose.

In keeping with an Alberta involved theme, this year’s film was also filmed in a variety of locations throughout Alberta, including Calgary and Kananaskis.

“It’s a great way to wind up the summer under the beautiful night sky. The Centennial Museum is the perfect location to get together with family and friends and watch a great movie that features some awesome Alberta locations.”

Enjoy free popcorn, face painting, a balloon artist, food vendor trucks and a fun way night out.

Humanity prevails, King Charles III issues statement

Problem? What Problem?

My friend was distraught. Her daughter and son-in-law had to evacuate their home because of encroaching wildfires.

Late the evening before, her daughter had texted, “It looks like we lost everything.”

Her daughter had a friend who was still located in their fire-threatened community. The daughter’s friend had let them know it appeared that the wildfire had engulfed their home.

Overnight, my friend couldn’t sleep, thinking about the loss.

“They worked so hard,” my friend said. Her daughter and son-in-law had spent years working and saving to buy their acreage, and more years working and saving as they designed and built their dream home while they raised their two sons. The project was finally finished, and her daughter and son-in-law loved everything about their home and acreage.

Now it was probably ashes.

Cruel.

My friend was heartbroken on their behalf.

And then, a different thought popped into her mind. “We still have the people. We didn’t lose the people.” She clung to that thought.

It reminded her how precious her daughter and sonin-law were, along with their two adult sons.

“We still have the people” became her mantra.

She began to feel a tiny spark of gratitude, even while feeling sad for the loss. ***

I’m on a Zoom call with three other people. The four of us have a specific project we’ve agreed to do together, and a specific agenda for this call. Three of us report what we’ve learned, what we’ve done so far, and what we will do in the next week.

The fourth person doesn’t talk about any of those things. First, she reports that she has not done anything to do with our project, nor even thought about it. Secondly, she talks about decorating a cake for an event that has nothing to do with any of us or our project.

As she blathers on, I find myself getting more and more irritated. Not only does her blathering have nothing to do with our project, she is wasting our precious and limited time together. We should be focussed on moving ahead with our shared project.

At some point, I interrupt her and bring the conversation back to our project. I wonder whether the two others on our call think I’m being rude or are glad I intervened.

An hour after our call ends, I realize I am still irritated. I’m stomping around thinking judgmental thoughts and muttering unkind things about the woman who blathered on.

What I am not doing is anything useful for our project – or anything else. ***

So. A little perspective.

In several parts of our country, people are having to evacuate their homes. They are in school gyms or other public facilities, sleeping on mats on the floor with dozens of others. They don’t know what’s happening back home. They don’t know whether they’ve lost their homes to wildfires. Or maybe worse – they DO know their homes have been lost.

In other parts of the world, people’s homes and communities are flooded.

In both cases – wildfires and floods – some people have lost their lives.

None of this is due to anything within their control. And I’m irritated because someone talked more than I liked about something I don’t care about.

Hmmm. ***

I think back to my friend whose daughter and sonin-law lost their dream home. I think back to my friend’s glimmer of gratitude: “We still have the people.”

I look at my irritation with someone I considered to be talking too much about something I don’t care about.

Problem? What problem? Why am I wasting my energy on something so trivial?

Sometimes, a little perspective is useful! ***

I’d love to hear from you. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send an email to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com I’ll happily reply within two business days.

With wildfires, floods, windstorms and other natural phenomenons wreaking havoc on our world, causing insurmountable damage and heart wrenching stories of loss including precious lives, hope rises from the destruction in the response from humanity.

The wrath of nature knows no boundaries with no place on earth being truly safe from the devastation these acts of nature leave behind, and our own communities in Canada are certainly no exception.

From the wildfires that ravaged parts of Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and now the Northwest Territories to the extreme drought and now damaging rain and hail conditions that impact our closest neighbours and hardworking farmers, the harm touches us all.

The King’s message regarding the states of emergency declared in the Northwest Territories and British Columbia, serves as a reminder to us all that humanity prevails. His message struck a chord with us so we decided to bring it to you in its entirety:

“My wife and I were desperately concerned to learn of the recent states of emergency declared in the Northwest Territories and British Columbia due to wildfires. We recall with great fondness our visit to Yellowknife and the Northwest Territories last year and we can only

begin to imagine the heartbreak in those communities as they face this disastrous situation.

“We know that this summer has been an incredibly difficult one for Canadians everywhere. Severe flooding, devastating fires and deteriorating air quality due to smoke have impacted the country from coast to coast to coast.

“My wife and I send our deepest condolences to all those who have lost loved ones and we continue to pray for all those who have been displaced, who have lost their homes, businesses or property in such dire circumstances. Our admiration is unbounded for the tireless work of local officials, volunteers and first responders in assisting and protecting their neighbours and communities in the face of such danger and uncertainty.

“The beauty of Canada is not limited to its landscapes; its true beauty lies in the strength and resilience of Canadians and the care and concern they show to one another in the face of adversity.”

Camrose Arts Society looking forward with upcoming events

The success of a community lies in recognizing and honouring its intricate web of diversity with a cohesive balance of technical, mechanical, social, cultural, intellectual and artistic contributions.

Arts have played a vital role in society since early beginnings and help people to not only understand but relate to each other as humans.

The Camrose Arts Society (CAS), a not-for-profit organization operated entirely by community volunteers, is doing just that with a mandate to promote, nurture and support the arts for the enrichment of community and life.

“Over the past few years, the Camrose Arts Society has undergone remarkable transformations, facing both challenges and opportunities,” explained Camrose Arts Society president Stephanie Lane. “The arts endured a severe blow during the COVID-19 pandemic, and prior to that, in 2019, the Society faced significant changes as it lost its City-sponsored director amid City reforms.

“The transition of the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre to being solely a Cityrun building resulted in all other groups, including the Camrose Arts Society, having to pay fees for its usage. Due to limited financial re -

sources, the Society could not pay these fees and regretfully had to give up our arts space at the centre.”

Lane said that despite these obstacles, the Camrose Arts Society has demonstrated resilience and a commitment to its artistic mission, finding innovative ways to stay connected with the community and maintain its presence within the City.

The main ways the Arts Society remains connected to CAS members and the community include:

• connecting via the web with a comprehensive and active website.

• connecting with artists and the community through art shows, art walks, and events.

• connecting by partnering with other arts groups, schools, businesses, and the City of Camrose to strengthen our initiatives and reach a wider range of community members.

Currently, there are two CAS art shows promoting local talent taking place in Camrose.

The first, “Expressions Unveiled”, is showing at the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre in partnership with the City of Camrose Recreation and Culture Department.

The other art show is called “Vibrant Visions” at the Fox & Fable Book & Game Cafe, and

will be showcased until September 30.

“These shows serve as platforms for local artists to showcase their talent, while simultaneously providing the community with an opportunity to appreciate and acquire remarkable artworks,” remarked Lane.

In addition to exhibitions, the Society is passionate about fostering a deeper connection between art and the community through art walks and upscale markets.

“‘Artwalk Through the Gardens’ was a massively successful event, connecting gardener and artist with the community,” remarked Lane.

In November, the Society will be hosting a family arts show during the day and an arts gala during the evening at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. Stay tuned to The Camrose Booster for more details to come in September, including date and times.

While Lane admits

the future is bright for the Camrose Arts Society, it is not without its challenges, the most significant of which is acquiring a volunteer-run arts hub space for artistic endeavors in the City of Camrose.

“This would significantly increase arts visibility and success within the City. We see this space as being a place for people to meet and create, a place for artists and the Art Society to plan arts events and initiatives, a place for workshops and shows, and final-

ly, a place for local artists to market and sell their work in the City of Camrose on a consistent basis,” she said, adding that many municipalities have art hubs that benefit both the community and artists.

The government of Alberta is expanding the eligibility for student transportation. We have nearly 900 more students riding the bus in BRSD this year! Thanks for your patience with us as we adapt to this new level of service.

If you were a student in Beaver County, Camrose County or Flagstaff County last year and your information (such as land location and school) remains the same, we’ve got you covered.

If you are new, or if you’ve changed schools or land locations, please go to our website brsd.ab.ca/families/transportation to register for busing for the coming year..

In the City of Camrose, BRSD and EIk Island Catholic Schools students are required to register every year for bus service. All the forms and information you need are posted on the BRSD website: brsd.ab.ca/families/transportation

Due to the high number of new bus riders, there are changes to start times at some City of Camrose schools. Please check with your school to learn their new morning and afternoon bell times for the 2023-2024 school year.

Battle River Denture Clinic Ltd.

“We are a registered society and registered charity,” noted Craft Centre president Annette Sarginson. “I believe we are the best kept secret in Camrose.”

“Prior to moving into the (since demolished) Drill Hall, we (the Craft Centre pottery group) were housed in Hut 7, an old barracks building on the (then) fair grounds,” explained Annette. “There were skunks in the basement, the windows were boarded up and the internal lighting was dim.”

According to Craft Centre member Randy Cummer, the old barracks made up a series of buildings at that location originally housing all three of the Craft Centre programs, including pottery, weaving and woodworking.

“It was kind of spooky too,” laughed Randy. “If you worked there late at night, you would sometimes get the feeling someone was looking over your shoulder.”

Eventually, the Craft Centre was offered facilities on the upper level of the Camrose Drill Hall, where it remained for 16 years until, upon recommendation of City Council, the old Drill Hall was deemed unsafe and subsequently demolished in 2020.

In an effort to find accommodations to suit the Centre’s needs but also within its leasing budget, Craft Centre members looked into 25 possible locations, but all were outside of the budget.

“We were delighted and grateful that The Bethany Group invited us to come and lease the fourth floor of the Bethany Group Rosehaven Care Centre,” expressed Annette, adding that without that option, it was very likely the Craft Centre would have been done. “We feel blessed.”

Craft Centre, a place to create

Continued from page 12

Currently, there are 77 members of the Camrose and District Craft Centre.

“The nice thing about our club is if you join, you can be connected with more than the one craft,” explained Annette. “Currently, we have seven members who go between different crafts.”

Besides offering a large, well-equipped facility for artisans to enjoy working on their crafts in a controlled environment, the Craft Centre also provides members with an opportunity to get out of the house and meet with fellow artisans to share skills and ideas and be part of a larger crafting community.

“It is just like a gathering place,” said Randy. “That is what it becomes once you join and, like anything else, it is what you make it, what you want it to be. Plus, we offer a nice warm place in the winter, especially for those who don’t have their own workshops.”

Some members bring a history of experience and skills to the “tables”, and other members come with very little experience.

“We might have some members who come out with very little experience, and then within a month or two they usually determine whether or not they like it or they don’t,” said Randy. “ The Craft Centre is a way of introducing people to these crafts so they can get started. That

is definitely one of the services we provide.”

The Centre is not about classes or courses, but more about providing a space, the advantage of working side by side with experienced artisans and the socialization aspect.

Intermediate and advanced weavers meet on Wednesday from 1 until 4 p.m. Weavers meet in groups and decide what to weave, order yarns, put on warps and weave off the projects.

Woodworkers meet on Thursday evenings generally working on individual projects offering the assistance of more experienced woodworkers.

Pottery offers classes for beginners on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Intermediate and advanced potters meet on Monday and Tuesday evenings and Wednesday afternoon.

In June, the Craft Centre holds its annual Raku and Horse Hair Day, where members gather to create spectacular pieces and enjoy a day of festivities.

While over a quarter of the members are aged 65 and over, the Craft Centre membership spans over generations.

“Many of the younger members are family oriented and it is often a night out for them,” commented Annette. “We come here to create and build. Whatever worries you have in

the world you let go come and become immersed in the craft, in building and creating. I believe it is such an essence of what we are here.”

The importance and value of intergenerational membership can not be overlooked. The skills, experience and longevity of some members can be such an asset for new members and younger generations wanting to learn these wonderful crafts, but new members are also able to bring light to them with innovation, new ideas and different processes.

“We (the Craft Centre) like to draw younger people in to secure our spot in history and keep the Craft Centre moving forward,” said Randy. “We encourage them to share what it is they want or need to be part of this group.”

“We need and appreciate the new ideas, enthusiasm and excitement youth bring to the club,” added Annette. “Thinking outside the box.”

As for the senior members, the Craft Centre provides vital connections outside of the home, breaking down the dangers of isolation, creating a purpose and giving them a place to come and be with others, to share, not only the tricks of the trades, but the goingson of their daily lives.

Ser ving your community for over 110 years

Change ahead for Service Options for Seniors

Submitted Service Options for Seniors has been supporting seniors in our community for the last 20 years. Supports have been in the form of income tax services, benefit support, food and housing support and service referrals.

The Board has recently decided that after serving the community for 20 years that they are ready to transition services to allied agencies focused on serving seniors.

“It was not an easy decision and it was one we mulled over for quite some time,” shares board Chair Jean Martens.

“The program is funded by taxpayer monies and through grants. With the decline of grant funding that is available and the increase of competition for grant funds, the Board asked if there was a more efficient and collaborative model, we could use to provide services. The service our clients currently experience will not change, in fact it will be bolstered with more opportunities for support and we will be able

to accommodate a larger number of clients.”

The SOS board members recognize that the senior population in Camrose is larger than all other municipalities.

“The services we are currently offering is limited by our finite resources. We are seeing an increase in demand for services and for broader services to be made available for our senior populous. The community is facing a myriad of complex issues that need case management and appropriate referral supports. Our program in its current state is not able to take on these needs and are limited to the number of people we can support.”

The history of the society is rich in the excellent service it has provided seniors. “The Board has prided itself in offering quality service and is excited that the new changes will allow for an opportunity to continue services. Having been introduced to the Collective Impact model being used with the Interagency group, we saw agencies working together to solve

complex social needs in a manner that is not only efficient but meets the demands of the community.

“We saw this as an opportunity for our program to be offered in a collaborative and fulsome manner that allowed for growth and expansion while being fiscally efficient. It is this reason we felt the timing was prudent to transition our society and allow for the program to be offered with larger agencies positioned to do so in the community. This change means we are ensuring services for seniors will be available in our community for many years to come,” said Martens.

“For our clients, services will remain the same and in the same location, the only changes will be the governance of the program. We are looking forward to continuing to serve our senior community in a manner that is beneficial and supportive for any complexity of need.”

Join other fighters in the Kidney Walk

The Northern Alberta and Territories Kidney and Transplant Walk will be held in-person on September 16 at the Bill Fowler Centre (5402-48 Avenue), with registration beginning at 10 a.m. with the program launching at 11 a.m. and walk shortly after.

“This will be our fifth Kidney Walk in Camrose, before that it was the March of Dimes for a few decades. It is a fundraiser for our organization and the funds go to those who need financial assistance when recovering from a kidney transplant or operation,” said Manuel Es-

coto, director of public engagement and communication.

“It also goes to the various programs that we have and support, such as our Short Term Assistance Program. That program is for a person who has no where else to go and it is used for food, medication or accommodations, they come to us,” shared Manuel.

“This is a big fundraiser for us. Last year, we raised about $53,000 thanks in part to a matching donation from Norm Mayer.”

ASK THE

Q.I’ve come into a pair of 2nd ha nd hearing aids . Can they be used on anyone else?

A.Possibly. Modern hearing aids are minicomputer s. Technologies evolve an d hardware can also wear out and break down. If the hearing aid is the st yle that fits behind the ear, and can successfully connect to fitting soft ware for programming, then there is hope The equipment must be free from the need of repair or cleaning and the part(s) needed to fit into the ear canals must be available and functioning. Even af ter all that, there are limits to the strength of the ai d, and there are some hearing aid supplier s that will not release their programming soft ware to clinic s outside of their franchise. I will do all I can to help someone wishing to make use of used hearing aids , sometimes for little or no cost out- of-pocket.

Craft Centre promotes creation

Continued from page 13

“Members work through ideas together and then they can create something. Once you get those basic skills you might think you can shoot for the moon, but you need that support to get there,” said Annette.

The Craft Centre also encourages newcomers to Camrose and Canada to come out and be part of the club.

The Centre is currently planning on holding a children’s event, inviting children, accompanied by an adult, to get a feel for the crafts.

On September 6, the Camrose and District Craft Centre will be holding its annual registration beginning 6:30 p.m. in the foyer of Heritage building (Rosehaven Care Centre). Tours of the Craft Centre studios

will also be available. Also stop by and visit them during Community Registration Night held on September 7 from 6 until 8:30 p.m. in the Camrose Field House (4516-54 Street.)

On November 17 and 18, the Camrose and District Craft Centre will once again be hosting their annual craft sale in the main auditorium of Bethany Group Rosehaven Care Centre.

“It is a way our artisans can showcase their work and sell some items, and the community can come and see the lovely items these artisans have made throughout the year,” said Annette.

Masson honours his friend with truck

of

owns a 1972 GMC 1500 Custom truck.

“This truck was my business partner’s truck, Merle Gendreau. When he passed away 30 years ago, at the age of 32, he left the truck to his children. One of them sold it and then his brother got it back for me. I decided to restore it 20 to 25 years ago,” said Roger.

The second generation of the C/K series is a range of trucks that was manufactured by General Motors. Marketed by both the Chevrolet and GMC divisions from the 1967 to 1972 model years, this generation was given the Action Line moniker by General Motors.

“I got right into it and did a full frame off restoration and replaced every nut and bolt that was in this truck. This is what you call a brand new 1972 GMC truck,” laughed Roger.

This generation marked the debut of the Chevrolet Cheyenne and GMC Sierra nameplates; making their debuts as trim levels, the Cheyenne and Sierra are both used by GM to this day in current production.

“This truck was always a short box. The truck is called Squirrel’s Ride, because that is what I called my friend,” shared Roger.

A picture of a squirrel appears on the end gate with a wrench in his hand with the name of the truck.

“This truck means a lot to me. This was my first partner’s truck and we owned RightWay Construction together. We were business partners and friends. We would drive in this truck together. It has a lot of memories, that is why I wanted this truck,” said Roger.

“I like the feel of driv-

STirewaps!

ing this truck. It has a 350 motor with 360 horsepower. It has an automatic transmission in it. A friend of mine rebuilt the transmission for me. The truck originally had a 350 motor in it, but this is a different motor, just the same size,” explained Roger.

“The hardest part was just getting it finished. You get to a certain point, when you are building, where you just have to take a break,” added Roger.

He had the box flooring completely re-done.

“Daymion Weiss, when he was at Showtime Auto Refinishing, started some of the work for me and then after it sat for 10 years, Daymion went on his own (Greasy D’s Rod and Kustom) he did the wood box

for me,” recalled Roger.

GMC introduced the Sierra and Sierra Grande option packages, making them distinct trim levels for 1972. For 1971, the 396 underwent internal revisions and was enlarged to 402 cubic inches.

In line with its use in full-size Chevrolet cars, the 402 was labeled as 400 cubic inches.

Questionable temptation

On Saturday evenings

during the winter months of the 1940s, the farm chores were done with haste. The animals needed to be bedded, dairy cows milked and the feeder stock fed. Once the milk was separated in to cream and cooled in an old well, we young ones could come in for an early supper. It was Saturday, and that meant it was Hockey Night In Canada

The radio, with its A, B and C batteries, was rationed. However, Hockey Night was special. There was great excitement when Foster Hewitt’s voice rang in our kitchen with the words, “Good evening hockey fans across Canada, the United States and Newfoundland. It is Hockey Night In Canada.”

It was pure hockey.

Fast forward to the sports world of today and it is clear that much has changed. Sport is now about big money. Real big money. One of the great benefactors of hockey wealth is none other than Gary Bettman with a career total, calculated in today’s dollars, at over $200 million.

The top-ranked baseball player, Shohei Ohtani, playing for the Los Angeles Angels, pulls in a whopping $65 million per year in salary and endorsements.

One might conclude that the billionaires who own the sports franchises and the players who earn those exaggerated salaries, well above an average worker, might be delightfully satisfied with their life. Yet, the sports world is hungry to squeeze more money out of its supporting fans.

Most recently, there has been a surge in sports betting schemes, advertised by some as the “game within the game.” A chance to test your predictions and change your life.

In just the province of Ontario alone, there are 31 sports betting agencies. One fact that we know with certainty is that the House–the agency that operates the betting activity–is richly profitable. One more time, sport becomes a vortex for sucking money from the masses.

Sport is about the game. In the betting world, your interest is divided between the sport and the hope that your bet might be gifted with a reward. If the bet becomes the focus, then sport is diminished.

The problem isn’t so much gambling as it is the ads asking us to gamble. There is a constant invitation to go beyond the sport. The claim is there is more fun to be had. The truth is some agency has decided there is more money to be extracted. If gambling is a person’s desire, then put on a coat and drive to a casino or an outlet that provides for gambling. But surely, the high rollers don’t need to be the uninvited intruders inside our home. Sport is about the excellence of our physical and mental being. It is a test of our speed, strength and endurance. We need not be tempted by some agencies’ thirst for money.

There are 365 days in a year, and one betting site, Bet365, hopes that you will gamble on every one of them.

It is difficult today to watch a sports program and not be asked to gamble. The UK, Spain, Poland, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands have all regulated sports betting. Statistics Canada indicates that there are 19.3 million online gamblers in Canada. Of the world’s 193 countries, Canada ranks eighth for the highest rate per capita of money spent through online gambling.

Lower income families tend to spend less on gambling, but those who do are more likely to end up addicted.

Let’s leave our living rooms for our families to manage without the pressure that rare luck might fall upon us. You have more chance of being struck by lightning than by winning a bet. May we soon return to the purity of sport.

Fun day

So many people still believe that no one reads papers anymore, but I disagree. The Camrose Booster informs people from a large area around Camrose regarding events and other news.

The Canadian Northern Society held Family Fun Day at Meeting Creek on August 19. The Booster, which believes in community building, featured us on the front cover. As a non-profit charity, we were grateful. About 300 people, including many with children, attended and enjoyed a wonderful fun-filled day on this historic country site.

Most people, and many for the first time, came because they saw the picture on the front of The Booster

On behalf of the Canadian Northern Society and the wonderful volunteers who worked hard to make it a great day, I want to thank The Booster and Ron Pilger for the wonderful write-up and photos.

Glenys Smith

Canadian Northern Society director

Great stories

Just want to let you know how very pleased we are with the (full page) article on the Provost Museum, August 15 issue of The Camrose Booster I have received many calls, such great comments, from people from far and wide who read the story. It gave wonderful coverage for our local attraction.

You have published many such articles over

the years about various communities and they are so interesting. Keep up the good work. Thanks so much, it is so much appreciated.

Great community

Thank you to The Camrose Booster and community so much for coming down on Thursday to support us. It really meant a lot to us. We raised $9,791 for those living with MS. A very successful month of fundraising, that’s for sure. Couldn’t have done it without the wonderful people of Camrose. Proud to be in this community. Take care and thanks again for your support.

1946 ~ 2008

Time speeds on 15 years have passed since death its gloom. Its shadows cast within our home

When all seemed bright. And took from us a shining light.

We miss that light and ever will.

His vacant place, there’s none to fill.

Down here we mourn, but not in vane.

For up in heaven, we will meet again. Forever in our hearts… Norine, Lance, Leanne, Janice, Jeff and families

“Dedicated service since 1906”

The family of Vicky Sturek

would like to thank everyone who attended and participated in our Mom’s celebration of life. It was a beautiful mass and send off for our Mom. Our cousin

Father Chad Miciak was the Celebrant and our parish priest

Father Kris Schmidt was the Co-Celebrant. From the mass servers to the beautiful sounding choir and the CWL Honour Guard, it was a service that would have truly made my mom feel so special.

As always our family came through, taking up the tasks at this hard time, doing the readings, being active Pallbearers (especially Chris who came home from Texas) and Honourary Pallbearers. There was a delicious lunch served by the CWL to end the afternoon. What a wonderful church community we have.

We would also like to thank all of you who sent flowers, cards with such caring words, brought food and stopped by to give us hugs, comfort and support. A special thank you to the Bert Blatz family for treating our family and the Aunts and Uncle to breakfast the day of the funeral.

We have the best family and friends and we cannot thank all of you enough for your support.

Also a special thanks to Burgar Funeral Home for providing their services with professionalism, compassion and efficiency in this difficult time.

Remember him with a smile today, He was not one for tears. Reflect instead on memories Of all the happy years.

Recall to mind the way he spoke, and all the things he said, His strength, his stance, the way he walked, Remember these instead.

The good advice he’d give us, his eyes that shone with laughter, So much of him will never die, but live on ever after.

As we loved you, so we miss you, in our memory, you are near. Loved, remembered, longed for always, bringing many a silent tear. Always remembered by loving wife Joyce; Karen (Bob) Davis and family; Paul (Bev) McNutt and family

Fundraiser celebrates local history

Approximately 225 people attended the second annual Taste Night at the Museum, held on Thursday, August 24, at the Camrose and District Centennial Museum. Attendees meandered around the different museum buildings, both inside and outside, enjoying tastings from local wineries, cideries, breweries, distilleries and meaderies complemented by a selection of delicious appe“teasers” and sweets provided by local venues. The event was hosted by the Camrose Kinettes in support of the Camrose Museum Society. Proceeds from the event will help support the care and stewardship of the museum and its precious collections.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results!

Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Kidney Walk

Continued from page 20

The walk is more than about fundraising. “We want to get the word out that we are walking. Kidney disease affects one in 10 people. This event is about bringing community donors and transplant recipients together. We are here for support and we want to let people know that,” said Manuel.

“I’ve been working with the kidney foundation for many years and the walk is a fun time,” said Erhard Pinno. “It is good that the foundation leaders come down and give us direction, share their hopes and plans for the coming year. We are making some contacts and the Kidney Foundation executive director Flavia Robles will join us as well. Our goal is to have the costs of the event sponsored, so it isn’t a cost to the organization. We had about 60 participants in the walk last year.”

The Kidney Foundation provides free programs and services that support their financial, emotional and mental wellness. Financial burdens should not impact health outcomes.

Approximately four million people have kidney disease in Canada and that has grown 31 per cent since 2011. About 52,000 Canadians are being treated for kidney failure and treatment for those with end-stage kidney disease includes 57 per cent on dialysis and 43 per cent have a functioning transplant, and every dollar donated goes toward maintaining and increasing those numbers so more people suffering with kidney disease can receive the help they need.

Being an organ donor could mean the difference between a recipient living the best life they can or ultimately life and death.

Participants wishing to support the cause but desire to walk on their own, are encouraged to send a photo of their own walk and tag the Kidney Walk on social media.

To register for the Camrose 2023 Kidney Walk, visit kidneywalk.ca and look for the Camrose section.

Donations are also welcome on the day of the event and walkers will receive a shirt to wear in support of the Kidney Walk.

A barbecue will follow the two- or five-kilometre walk.

Students heading back to school

The Battle River School Division (BRSD) has a new superintendent for the upcoming school year.

BRSD welcomes superintendent Rhae-Ann Holoien into the fold. She is honoured to begin her leadership role with BRSD and is enthusiastic about upcoming achievements that BRSD staff and students will celebrate throughout the year.

“As we step into the new school year, I’m brimming with enthusiasm and optimism for what lies ahead,” said Holoien. “The start of this academic journey provides many opportunities, where ‘Every Student, Every Day, a Success’ is not just our vision, but a guiding principle. This vision will drive us to foster growth, inspire learning and celebrate the achievements of each and every

Tricky turn

student.”

From fresh starts to amazing accomplishments, BRSD is setting the stage for an exciting journey through the 2023-24 school year.

On Tuesday, August 29, BRSD staff members are welcomed back for a division wide learning day. This marks the first day in many years that all staff will come together to celebrate the start of the new school year.

BRSD doors swing open for students on Tuesday, September 5. While heading back into the classrooms, there is a mix of excitement and nerves.

Teachers and staff members are ready to guide and inspire on this journey of learning and growth together.

Also, keep in mind the need for more alertness as children walk to school and

cross the streets. Remember to watch for school buses stopping to pick children up in the city, towns and along the highway.

Recent government revisions that decreased the distance for students to be eligible to ride the bus, means that the school division has many more riders on our buses. To address the increase of ridership while providing efficient service, BRSD has redesigned the City of Camrose transportation system. We have added an extra route in Camrose, and introduced in-town transportation options for eligible rural students in Daysland, Sedgewick, Killam, Tofield, Bashaw, and Viking. We have also added rural bus routes to Forestburg, Round Hill, and Camrose Rural, ensuring quicker and more convenient travel.

All I need is a friend who says they are on their way over, so I nd motivation to clean the house in a panic, but then they cancel, leaving me alone in a clean house.

Male friendships and female friendships are so di erent. My wife knows all her closest friends' blood t ypes. I get Christmas cards from two old friends who can't even spell my name correctly

Adult friendship is saying, "Let me call you back", hanging up and calling back three or four days later, and no one takes it personally

Being an adult means you have a total of three friends who all live in di erent par ts of the country and periodically send each other videos of weird dogs and say, "This made me think of you."

We all have that one friend who, when you go out with them, it feels like they're a local politician who knows everyone on ear th, and you're their weird mute friend who just lef t the house for the rst time in eight years.

An adult friendship means exchanging bir thday gif ts, but not until three months after the actual bir thday.

I have some great friends, but when I text my friend Trina, "So sorr y we are running late to your daughter's par ty," she will reply, "We are also running late to her par ty." Everyone needs a friend like that

A plus side to being my friend is that you can come to my house in your pajamas and I won't judge you because I will also be in my pajamas. There are two types of mom friends:

The Brendas – You need to clean your house from top to bottom before they come over for a play date.

The Nicoles – When they come over for a play date, they tr y and help you nd out where that weird smell is coming from.

Adult life is constantly saying to your friends, "Let's do something soon!" and before you know it, six months have gone by.
