Silent Santa Samantha Bell, Amanda Buschhaus and Stephanie Hvenegaard display some of the items that the Camrose Kinettes Club have accepted, or purchased, to gift to young people in our community prior to Christmas.
This year, unexpected demand for gifts for young people of all age groups has the members of the Camrose Kinette Club more than a little worried. However, having conducted a local Silent Santa Toy Drive for decades, Kinettes recognize how the community typically comes together annually to ensure every boy or girl will have something to make Christmas far more positive and memorable. Their annual Toy Drive will take place on Saturday, November 25, on the service road near Camrose Registries office on 48th Avenue. To maximize their impact, this year the Kinnettes will also accept donations of toys, cash, gift cards and other age-appropriate gift items at a Main Street location during Midnight Madness. See more details pertaining to the Kinettes' impressive initiative on page 2.

Kinettes toy drive assists children By Murray Green
The Camrose Kinette Club is reaching the critical level for new unwrapped toys and cash donations to make its annual Kinettes Silenta Santa Toy Drive a success. The Toy Drive is slated for November 25, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Camrose Registries, 561348 Avenue. “We are changing it up a little bit this year. We are looking for toys, clothing games etc., for toddlers to 12-year-olds, which is our main focus. We are going to collect or buy gift cards for 13 to 17-year-olds this year. We welcome cash donations in order to purchase gift cards. Another thing we are doing differently, because we are on Main Street in the Anderson Building (near Camrose Coffee 48 Avenue and 50 Street), we are going to open our depot from 5 to 10 p.m. on Friday, November 24, during Midnight Madness. If people are shopping downtown and want to drop off gifts or gift cards, we will be there
to accept them,” said club president Cathy Pacholek. “We packed for more than 400 children last year. We are accepting as many or more this year. We packed up very few items that were left over from last year. Silent Santa definitely is in need of donations. We are really counting on the community to help us because we need items in all age groups, especially the five to nine-year-olds,” said Cathy. “We do accept cash donations or gift cards which are used to purchase gifts for children where donations have run short. We are looking for family things like books, games and puzzles. If we have a family of five or six, games are a great option to give,” she added. At the Toy Drive, the club has made the event about convenience. Patrons can simply pull up and do a drive by drop off. “No one even needs to get out of the car, let us do the running for you.” The Silent Santa Pro-
gram provides to those most in need in Camrose and area. Gift ideas include hair dryers, pocket books, gift cards for fast food restaurants, bowling gift certificates, swimming passes and movie gift certificates. Once the toy drive has wrapped up, the gifts will be sorted according to age and if they are for girls or boys. “The hampers are packed and passed off to the Merry Christmas Fund who then distributes the toys with the food hampers.” The Kinette Club works along with the Merry Christmas Fund and Swans and Roses Lions Club for delivering the toy hampers to the fire hall. The food and toy hampers start packing on Wednesday, December 13 for delivery on Saturday, December 16, starting at 9 a.m. Monetary donations to Silent Santa are also collected by Shuman Insurance at 4882-50 Street.

Bruins knock off Generals By Murray Green
Camrose Bruins played tight defence and received great goaltending to knock off the Lacombe Generals 4-1 on a night to remember, November 11. Camrose opened the scoring when Jacob Chamberlin connected in the first period. With a minute left in the period Holden Daley scored to give the bears a 2-0 lead. Lacombe fought back in the middle frame with a goal, but Landon Oslanski gave the Bruins a two-goal lead again with a power play marker with eight seconds left in the period. Brett Njaa added a third
period goal to complete the scoring. Goalie Connor Dobberthien stopped 36 out of 37 shots directed his way. Camrose fired 44 shots on goal. Home games at the Max McLean Arena begin at 8 p.m. Games are on Friday, December 8 versus Bonnyville; Saturday, January 6 against Lacombe and Saturday, February 3 against Red Deer. Miller, McLean are the Bailey featured artists into December By Murray Green
How to start a movement
A three-minute Ted talk caught my attention. We’re used to seeing advice and research about how to be a leader. This talk was about the impact that a follower can make. A video clip showed a shirtless man who started dancing on a beach. A crowd of people were sitting on the side of a hill. A few began to watch him; most did not. As the speaker said, “At this point, he is just a lone nut.” A few moments later, one person in the crowd got up and joined the dancing man. As the two dancers high-fived and kept dancing, more people started paying attention. The speaker told us to watch carefully. A third person joined the two dancers. What happened next? A tipping point. Within seconds after the third dancer appeared, a few more people began to stand up and join the dancers, and then a few more. Very quickly, more than half the people on the hill were moving to join the dancers. Then others followed, to avoid being left behind. The dancing went from “one lone nut” to “something acceptable” to “a movement.” The speaker reinforced the message. A “leader” may be the first person to suggest or do something. But a leader cannot make a difference unless someone follows. Without followers, a potential leader is just “a lone nut.” *** In times of transition–such as those we are experiencing right now–we already know most of the strategies that past leaders recommend and followers agree to follow. Past leaders and followers (“we!”) have been incredibly effective at creating exactly the reality we have now. As a human race, leaders and followers (“we!”) have created realities such as an environment that cannot sustain us for much longer, an economy that benefits fewer and fewer people, and political and military actions that drive millions of people to risk their lives trying to escape from their country. As a human race, leaders and followers (“we!”) have also created acts of kindness and courage that brought harmony out of hatred, and solutions to seemingly impossible challenges. Our future could go either way. What we’ve done has created our current reality. If we want to change some of that, we’re almost certainly going to have to experiment with new strategies. We don’t have to be the first ones or the leaders in order to make a difference. It’s encouraging to know that our “follower” actions can make a big difference. But what kinds of possibilities do we follow? *** I’m reminded of this story. A First Nations Elder was teaching his grandchildren about life. He said to them, “A fight is going on inside me. It is a terrible fight between two giant wolves.” He paused. “One wolf represents fear, anger, envy, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego. The other wolf stands for joy, peace, love, hope, sharing, serenity, humility, kindness, friendship, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.” He paused again. “This same fight is going on inside you and inside every person.” The grandchildren were quiet for a minute and then one child asked, “Which wolf will win, Grandfather?” The old man replied, “The one you feed.” *** Three quotes I appreciate: “Do what you feel in your heart to be right–for you’ll be criticized anyway.” Eleanor Roosevelt “A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go but ought to be.” Rosalynn Carter “When the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful.” Malala Yousafzai *** I’d love to hear from you. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send an email to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within two business days.
The Bailey Theatre has added art work to its walls in the Spotlight Bistro to support local artists. From now until the end of the year D. Glen Miller Photography and Judy McLean’s paintings will be on display as the featured artists. “I’ve been taking pictures for more than 50 years. I take pictures of whatever I find interesting. When I travel, I always have my camera with me,” shared Glen, who is a member of the Camrose Camera Club. “The Bailey is special because I remember coming here as a kid and watching a lot of movies here. I appreciate the fact that my pictures are up and people can see them. They are from all over the world, where I have travelled, so people can relate to some of them or they can view other parts of the world. Some people can look at a photo and say that’s the one. Other people will pick a completely different one,” explained Glen. His note at the Bailey says: “What a wonderful life of travel and adventure we have lived! And
I am so thankful to have recorded these travels and adventures, as it allows me to look back and relive them. By sharing with you some of these images, we hope you will enjoy them as much as we do,” Betty and Glen Miller. “Over the years I have found so many things to see and take pictures of. This is a wonderful idea to showcase local artists. This is a way for all kinds of artists to display their work. This is a good idea. I picked the pictures that I like to display,” he added. “It is great to share the space with Judy. I’ve known Judy for 55 or 60 years, so that is nice to be showing with her. I am volunteering for the Bailey Theatre in a way because if any of the photos sell, some of the proceeds will go to the Bailey to help pay off some of the mortgage. David (Roth on the Bailey Society board) called me and asked if would like to put some photos up. He said if you sell any, the money is mine. But then Judy came along and said she would donate 50 per cent back to the Bailey. I said I have to donate that too then,” he laughed.

“I have so many pictures and I think it is nice to help with the Burn the Mortgage campaign,” said Glen. Judy’s note said: “In addition to walking and hiking in these beautiful surroundings (Canmore) I have even learned to paint bears and mountains! I hope you enjoy my paintings,” she said. They kicked off Burn the Mortgage campaign which runs until December 15. The goal is to raise $23,000 to put down on the mortgage this year before it has to be renewed. “David has been looking after this and we usually fundraise in the fall. The principal is due in December and with interest rates going up, we wanted to stay on top of this. Judy is a past-president, although she has moved away, she still keeps in touch with us to see what is going on,” said president Barb Stroh. “Our mortgage is about $225,000. It was $600,000 11 years ago, so we have brought it down quite a bit. Our interest payments are more each month. The idea is to raise $23,000 in 2023.”

HARRY KUNTZ, M.P. PASSES SUDDENLY Harry Kuntz, 44, Member of Parliament for the Battle River Constituency, passed away suddenly, in Ottawa, on Friday, November 16. The funeral was held Monday afternoon, November 19, from Camrose United Church. Among the hundreds who came to pay their last respects and express sympathy to the family were approximately thirty Members of Parliament and others from Ottawa, including the Honourable Robert Stanfield, and a number of Members of the Legislature of Alberta, including Premier Peter Lougheed. The late Mr. Kuntz is survived by his wife, the former Doreen Streberg, and five sons aged nine to eighteen years. He was a former alderman of the City of Camrose and was elected to the House of Commons in the last federal election. He was a businessman and farmer. TRIBUTES TO THE LATE HARRY KUNTZ The House of Commons met at eleven o’clock, Friday morning, November 16, and leaders of the four political parties immediately paid tribute to the late Harry Kuntz. Their tributes as quoted in Hansard follow: Rt. Hon. P. E. Trudeau [Prime Minister]: Mr. Speaker, we learned with sadness this morning of the death of our colleague and friend, Harry Kuntz, Member for Battle River. Born and raised on a farm in Alberta, he had a deep respect and love for the land he represented. Although he was a relative newcomer to federal politics, his record of public service at the community level in Camrose was well established. As the father of five sons, he had an enthusiastic interest in amateur sports and volunteered his time to work with young people. Since he was elected to Parliament last year, he quickly became known among his colleagues as a dedicated constituency man. The concerns of his riding – agriculture, transportation and small business – became the concerns which he keenly pursued as a member of this house. Mr. Speaker, I know all members will join with me in extending our sympathy to Mrs. Kuntz and her sons. Hon. R. L. Stanfield [Leader of the Opposition]: Mr. Speaker, I was very shocked this morning to learn of the death of the hon. member for Battle River. It is always with particular sadness that one learns of the death of someone who is young in years, a husband and father of a young family. Harry Kuntz came to the House of Commons from a part of the country where much remains of the spirit of the pioneers. He applied that spirit himself to the service of his neighbours. He was very active in the economic life of his community, in its civic affairs and, as the Prime Minister indicated, in community affairs. His concern for the future of agriculture and the agricultural communities in his constituency was demon-

strated with great sincerity and great conviction in this chamber. He was a man of very sound judgement, a man who spoke out when he had something to say. Knowing our hon. friend from Battle River, I and other members who come from other parts of the country came to appreciate the feelings and aspirations of the people he represented. I will miss his counsel. On behalf of myself and my colleagues, I join the Prime Minister in expressing our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Kuntz and her family. Mr. Stanley Knowles [Winnipeg North Centre]: Mr. Speaker, my colleagues and I join with the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition in expressing our sorrow at the sudden passing of the late member for Battle River. Although Harry Kuntz had been a member of this House for only the period since the last election, the seating arrangements have been such that he was near us, physically at any rate, and my colleagues who sat close to him found him a delightful person to know. All of us wish to express our regret at his sudden and untimely passing. We extend our sympathy in particular to the Leader of the Opposition and to his party in the loss of a valued colleague. We would ask that you, Sir, express on behalf of all of us in the House our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Kuntz and the five sons. The loss of a husband and father at such an early age is indeed a time of sadness, but we trust that the precious memories they will have through the years that lie ahead will be a source of strength and comfort to them even now. Mr. Real Caouette [Temiscamingue]: Mr. Speaker, my colleagues and myself should like to join the Right Hon. Prime Minister (Mr. Trudeau), the leader of the official opposition (Mr. Stanfield) and the hon. member for Winnipeg North Centre (Mr. Knowles) in expressing our heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Kuntz and her children. Mr. Kuntz was a very devoted and active member of Parliament. I believe that the House has lost one of its good members and this is why we join all hon. members in expressing our deepest sympathy to his family. Mr. Speaker: Later today it will be my duty to convey directly to Mrs. Kuntz the sympathy and condolences which have been expressed by the party leaders on behalf of all members of the House.

Fire Chief for the Day By Lori Larsen
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Camrose Fire Department Chief Peter Krich hands over the helmet and reins to Fire Chief for the Day lucky winner Dawson Fleck.
Many a child (and some adults too) have been enthralled by a big, red, shiny fire truck. There is just something about it that conjures up excitement maybe even dreams of being a firefighter one day. For Grade 2 Jack Stuart School student Dawson Fleck it was more than just a dream. On November 14, one of the Camrose Fire Department’s (CFD) big, red, shiny fire trucks drove up in front of his house, and not because of an emergency, but because Dawson was the lucky student who had his name drawn to be Fire Chief for a Day. The Fire Chief for a Day program that takes place in October in conjunction with Fire Prevention Week (FPW), encourages students in Kindergarten to Grade 6 to not only learn more about fire safety but enter to become the Chief for the Day. “The purpose of the Fire Chief for a Day program is to promote each year’s Fire Prevention Week (FPW) theme, encouraging fire safety discussions in the home and classroom,” explained CFD Fire and Life Safety educator Captain Jeff Knopf. During Fire Prevention Week materials pertaining to fire prevention and the FPW theme are distributed to school classrooms encouraging students to complete the projects outlined in the material in an effort to help the students gain a better understanding of fire safe behaviours. Students can also fill in the Fire Chief for the Day entry forms which are then put in for a random draw done after FPW. This year’s honour went to Dawson who was over the top excited when he learned he would be donning the uniform
and inspecting the troops as part of his bestowed upon duties. On November 14, during regular CFD practice, Dawson, along with fouryear-old brother Porter, mom and dad, were picked up at their home in a flashy red CFD limousine and escorted back to the Fire Hall. Once there Dawson was officially inaugurated to the position of Fire Chief (for the day) by more permanent Chief Peter Kirch and then handed the reins. When asked if Dawson had any opening remarks for the firefighters, all anxiously awaiting his “now get to work”, Dawson graciously said he would like to meet and ask the names of all the firefighters present. Donning his Fire Chief for the Day uniform and helmet, Dawson met with and shook hands with every firefighter. After the ceremonial handing over of the chief’s helmet, Dawson was given the grand tour of the fire hall, including an exclusive look at the CFD museum of memories, a run down on the communications area and the hose drying room then off to participate and “inspect” the training evolutions that the members were doing that evening. After some rigorous knot tying, victim lifting/carrying and dragging (Dawson played victim) and a lift in the rescue basket stretcher (courtesy of a few firefighters), Dawson was able to sit in some of the most important seats in the Hall, behind the wheel of the fire trucks. Dawson was also given a gift package of various items, from the Camrose Fire Department. The success of the program was easily measured by the amount of questions and the size of the smile on Dawson’s face.

On November 2, to much media fanfare, a “new” song was released by The Beatles. For many Beatles fans, “Now and Then” serves as a welcome if melancholy farewell from the band, a “poignant act of closure,” as the British music critic Alex Petridis insisted–the “happy ending” that Paul McCartney especially had always wanted for the famed group. Alexander Carpenter, Music, But is “Now and Then” really University of Alberta a new Beatles song? Augustana Campus One way to address this question is via the theoretical lens of “hauntology,” a philosophical concept about the nature of being and the complicated relationship between the present and the past. Hauntology can perhaps best be understood via the paradoxical figure of the ghost–as it appears in literature, folklore and popular culture–in response to the question, is a ghost something from the past or something that is of the present? In a weird way, of course, a ghost is both at the same time. How does this apply to “Now and Then”? It is a re-worked version of a song originally written and recorded–in poor audio quality on a small cassette recorder–by John Lennon sometime in the late 1970s before his tragic murder in 1980. With the assistance of artificial intelligence software to recover Lennon’s voice, McCartney and Starr recreated the sound and sensibility of the Beatles circa the late 1960s. Along with Lennon’s singing, the late George Harrison’s guitar parts (recovered from old studio outtakes), Ringo’s characteristic drum fills and the string arrangements are unmistakable sonic markers of The Beatles’ late period and point to the soundscapes of classic tracks like “Strawberry Fields” or “Day in the Life.” On the one hand, McCartney’s arranging and production choices for the song are clearly making the claim it is a new Beatles song, a work of “now” rather than “then.” There is the much-celebrated use of amazinglyfuturistic machine-learning technology to capture Lennon’s voice from an old recording. McCartney and Starr contribute their own new parts to construct the track and even include McCartney’s introductory count-in at the beginning of the song–“One, two, three…”–along with Starr’s comment, “Good one,” heard at the end, to signify to listeners that the song is not a relic or ghost, but rather contemporary music performed by living musicians. But on the other hand, “Now and Then” is quite clearly a work of nostalgia that is haunted, caught somewhere between past and present. There is not only Lennon’s spectral “presence” via his vocal track, but also the lyrics themselves, which oscillate between present and past– now and then–as they invoke longing and loss but also the possibility of new beginnings, as Lennon sings “If we must start again…” George Harrison is also a ghost in this song, with his old guitar parts heard simultaneously with McCartney’s newly-composed guitar tracks in the style of Harrison. In this song, Harrison, like Lennon, is both present and absent at the same time. For some listeners–those attuned to the track’s hauntological elements–the song is a bit creepy: Lennon’s vocal track is a voice from the grave, a dead man’s voice paired in uncanny fashion with his living former bandmates. For others, it is a sentimental and moving testimony to the deep feelings of love and respect between the band members. A plurality of listeners and critics seem to be ambivalent, insisting that “Now and Then” might be a good song, but not a great one–it doesn’t hold a candle to the many Beatles songs already in the pantheon of popular music. But, whether it is an old song or new, good or great or just mediocre, we must allow that “Now and Then” certainly does have a special place in the Beatles’ body of work: it is surely their last song.

Charity Checkstop supports community services By Lori Larsen
Residents are once again invited to come out on December 2 between noon and 4 p.m. to the annual Charity Checkstop hosted by Camrose Police Service (CPS) and CPS Victim Services Unit (VSU) in support of Camrose Neighbor Aid Center, Camrose Women’s Shelter and Camrose & District Family and Community Support Services (FCSS). Celebrating the 17th annual event, the Charity Checkstop has a longstanding reputation of rallying together the “troops” to create awareness and drive support for organizations within the community that provide vital services. Residents are encouraged to head for the flashing lights that will be located on 48th Avenue eastbound service road adjacent to Camrose License & Registry. Donations including monetary, food (non perishable), clothing and toys will all be used to assist Camrose Neighbor Aid Center, Camrose Women’s Shelter and Camrose & District Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) with their continued work in the communities they serve. With the recent transition of victims’ support to Camrose Police Service (November 1), as a result of the Government of Alberta changing funding models and infrastructure of Victims’ Services across the province, the funding model has changed in that Camrose Police Service Victim Services Unit can no longer be the recipient of fundraising donations. However, Camrose Police Service and CPS Victim Services Unit wish to keep the legacy of Charity Checkstop as an important opportunity for community engagement. “We want to continue to be a “beacon of light” that promotes awareness and encourages support of the many organizations that provide the community with vital services,” remarked CPS Inspector Rene Brisson. “We recognize that the community businesses and residents see the Charity Checkstop as an incredible opportunity to support some great outcomes within the community as far as victim support.” Victim Services Unit
The Victim Services Unit for Camrose and surrounding area began operations approximately 23 years ago, in partnership with the RCMP with a mandate to aid and assist victims of crime and trauma of Camrose and Camrose county. As Camrose started experiencing further growth, Camrose Po-
lice Service joined the VSU under the brand Camrose and District Victim Services Unit, and with the building of the new CPS headquarters provided housing for the VSU office. Now under the umbrella of the Camrose Police Service and the new brand of Camrose Police Service Victim Services Unit, VSU will continue to support the RCMP and County of Camrose until the redesign is complete, ensuring no gaps in service.
the necessary tools needed for our clients that’s where our partners come in, to bridge any gaps. Over my time as program manager, I have made those connections and I feel we have established a really strong partnership. We work very closely on numerous occasions and I definitely want to continue that.” In speaking of the transition over to CPS, Williams said, “We have already worked in partnership through the years with
body experiencing crime or trauma will have the support they need. “We understand that in traumatic situations, it can be a difficult time. With the VSU, there is someone there to sit with the victims, to listen, be empathetic, and offer support. Even reminding clients to take their medications or making a cup of coffee can be little acts of support. Through the trauma informed approach, we have found this type of support
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster
Pictured left to right are Camrose Police Victim Services Unit program manager Vikki Williams, Camrose Neighborhood Aid Center program director Jo-Anne Tweed, Camrose & District Family and Community Support Services executive director Lyndel Kasa, Camrose Police Service Police Action Crisis Team (PACT) officer Constable John Tomaszewski, Camrose Women’s Shelter executive director Nora-Lee Rear and Camrose Police Service Constable Stephanie Postma encourage Camrose and area residents to come out on December 2 for the annual Charity Checkstop.
Continuing on with her dedicated work with the VSU, now in the capacity of Camrose Police Service Victim Services Unit program manager, Vikki Williams’ previous experience in victim support, education in criminal justice, strong partnership building with both CPS and other community stakeholders and passion for assisting those in need, align her perfectly for the position. Williams began with VSU over three years ago, serving as a volunteer advocate for seven months. When the position for program manager became available, she applied and was the successful candidate. “I received the position for program manager through the Victims Service Society and one of the goals I had set out was to engage community partnerships and interagency communication,” said Williams. “I realize how important that is. It takes a community, and VSU recognizes we may not have
CPS so there is a familiarity there and a positive rapport has been established, so it hasn’t been a huge transition. “Our whole focus during this transition was to ensure there were no gaps in service and we were very successful in achieving that. We (VSU and CPS) wanted our Victims Services program to run like it always has been where our priority is our community and our victims and making sure if they had any concerns about the redesign, they were quickly addressed. We were able to offer some comfort and information that Victims Services is still here.” Williams noted that even though VSU experienced a change in the organizational and funding model, victims’ needs and partnering with inter-agencies in the community to work together to help community members is their top mandate. “We are still available 24/7 to make sure that any-
leads to empowerment and positive rapport with our clients. We want to ensure our victims have a voice in their healing journey as well as in the court system.” She further explained that unfortunately the justice system is not set up for the victims. “Victims often feel unheard in the justice system. That’s where VSU plays a role, in ensuring their voice is heard, with the hope of empowerment. We want to make sure people feel empowered and they have a voice in the justice system.” Williams said that it is also important that the victims realize they are the ones leading their own progress and choosing the support they want. “We are not telling them what they need or have to do, we are giving them support and options so they can make informed choices for themselves with a community team that really does truly care about the outcome and how their healing journey progresses. And that will
not change now that we are under the umbrella of CPS. If someone is experiencing domestic violence, it is always up to the victim to make the decision of how they want to proceed, whether that be reporting to police or not.” Williams noted that everything VSU does is under the strictest of confidentiality and all volunteers are certified by Alberta Justice and Solicitor General, requiring an intense four-month online training through the Justice Institute of B.C. and must pass an enhanced security reliability review. “The four volunteers also moved smoothly over during the transition. We recognize the importance of having volunteers. They do a tremendous amount of work for us. They are often the first point of contact when that on-call phone rings.” The CPS VSU is looking at expanding the number of volunteers and reopening the practicum student program, which, along with the two new part time employees, will enhance the already high standards of service. “The additional two part time employees will be taking over the files and delegating them out to the volunteers and facilitating court support and crown’s office meetings with victims.” This will free up Williams’ time to focus on administrative work, ensuring the VSU stays on top of best practices and developing and maintaining community and interagency partnerships. “Partnering with other agencies helps our mutual clients in the best possible way. We are all on the same team and we want to help our community in any way we can.” Williams reported that over the last few years, more people have been reaching out, even if they are not reporting. “We are able to offer them support and refer them to our community partners and make sure they are getting the help they need.” Williams thanked the previous board for all the work they did in victim advocacy and the time and dedication they put in over the years. “I am forever grateful that they took a chance on me and thank them for all the hard work they did to keep the program working at the highest service level. “We want to continue on with the legacy of Victims Services.” If you need to reach Camrose Police Service Victim Services Unit, telephone 780-672-4570.

The incredible talent of Camrose’s own concert pianist Roger Admiral will be featured during a no admission charge, oneof-a-kind piano concerto to be held on November 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Peter & Jeanne Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. The concerto was composed by internationally acclaimed composer Steven Takasugi’s Klavierkonzert, who will be at the concerto to introduce the music and share with audience members some of the metaphors

Leahy brings Christmas cheer to the Lougheed By Murray Green
The Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre has a great lineup of shows for this season. Some of the shows mentioned are add-on shows not in the regular season line-up. Roger Admiral is back, this time with Steven Takasugi on November 22 at 6:30 p.m. The music is solo piano and electronic sounds broadcast through loudspeakers placed around the Cargill Theatre. This event is at no charge.
Canadian icons Leahy will be bringing their Celtic Roots and Christmas Cheer show on November 23 at 7:30 p.m. “I’ve been trying to get them for a long time. This is a powerhouse group from the east coast. It will be a mix of their hits and Christmas music,” said Lougheed manager Nick Beach. An evening with Finger Eleven on November 24 beginning at 7:30 p.m. will feature their greatest hits.
the end of 20 years composing acousmatic musique-concrête, meant exclusively for listening on headphones,” explained Admiral. “His music made a profound impression on me.” Admiral explained that the acousmatic style is based off Greek philosopher Pythagoras’ akomus concept method of teaching. “Pythagoras thought it was important that students really listen to the words he said, but not focus on the visual aspect, so he taught behind a curtain.”
Donaueschinger Musiktage (Festival in Germany) contacted Takasugi about commissioning an orchestral work, perhaps a piano concerto. After Admiral was able to secure funding for the original 15-minute piece through Augustana’s President’s Grant for Creative and Performing Arts, he was contacted by Takasugi suggesting instead of a 15-minute piece a 50-minute piece with full orchestra and sound coming through speakers
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Concert pianist Roger Admiral takes a moment on November 14 to demonstrate the powerful sound of the beautiful Steinway piano on the Cargill Theatre stage in preparation for the one-of-a-kind international piano concerto to be held at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on November 22.
and poetic concepts behind the composition. He will then be available for a question/answer session following the performance. Admiral met Steven Takasugi in 2013 at the contemporary music symposium SALT Festival, which took place at the University of Victoria. “I shook his hand and introduced myself,” said Admiral. “A month later, I sent him a message asking if he would consider composing a new work for solo piano and electronic sounds.” Takasugi agreed to compose the work after he completed a project he was then working on, which gave Admiral time to secure some funding for the commission. “Takasugi was near
Admiral continued, “Two thousand years later, some composers in France experimented with recording everyday sounds on reel-to-reel tape. They listened to the sounds back through speakers accepting the sound as a sound separate from its visual cause or origin. It is a whole genre of musical composition.” Around the time Admiral met Takasugi, he (Takasugi) was getting out of the acousmatic style entering a new phase where the performers returned. “I was in the right place at the right time,” smiled Admiral. The piece (for which Admiral commissioned Takasugi) was meant to be 15 minutes in duration, however, around the same time, the director of
to be presented at a major festival in Germany. The international Donaueschinger Musiktage Festival matched the funding from Augustana, which allowed for the creation of a 50-minute performance for solo piano with full orchestra and electronic sounds. The result was two different versions of the concerto–a piano solo with orchestra, which Roger played at the premier during the Donaueschinger Musiktage Festival in Germany on October 22; and the piano solo and acousmatic version which is premiering on November 22 at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. “The whole nature of the concerto is the solo (piano) and the group sound coming through speakers. It is a blend of the two styles of live performer and the acousmatic part of the performance, which comes from short recorded orchestral instruments sounds controlled by Erik Olson,” explained Admiral. “Sounds will be coming through the speakers in the front, right and left, and in the back, right and left. Erik will be controlling the dynamic of that and where the sound goes. “There is the visual aspect of the audience seeing the pianist playing (Roger on stage), but there may be another piano playing (recorded) heard through the speakers. There is intentional confusion. It activates the audiences imagination spatially.” In describing the uniqueness of the concerto, Admiral said that this performance doesn’t have the traditional expectations of melody and rhythm which are important things for all classical, popular folk music. “With the melody, you recognize repetition, pattern, that is easy to remember. In this case, there are more than those two parameters.” He explained that this type of concerto involves extremes in pitches, up and down and unpredictable rhythm in a way that is
much like the sounds of nature. “Other parameters include loud and soft and quick and slow, and use of space, front, back, left and right. There is also the density of sound and the colour (sound) of the instruments, similar to the pointillism a visual art concept from the early 20 century, where the viewer looks at a painting close up and sees little dots, but moves back and then sees the whole picture. There are points of sound, it is a kaleidoscope of sound.” And according to Admiral, all of these parameters are treated equally. For the audience, the acousmatic performance is intended to invoke a pure experience of distinguishing sounds not based on a visual source. Some may liken it to listening to a storm with one’s eyes shut, not knowing the origin of the sounds, but appreciating each sound for its individual purpose. It is a musical experience, like none other. In August of next year, Admiral will be performing the concerto again in New York, USA. OLMP girls capture junior volleyball regionals By Murray Green
The Our Lady of Mount Pleasant (OLMP) Royals’ junior volleyball girls’ team captured the regionals tournament in Tofield on November 7. OLMP won its division by beating Daysland and École Camrose Composite High School (ÉCCHS) Trojans in round robin action. In the other pool, Bashaw placed first with wins over Tofield and Viking. In the semifinals, OLMP beat Tofield and Bashaw beat ÉCCHS to advance to the final. OLMP won the gold medals, Bashaw silver, while ÉCCHS defeated Tofield to garner the bronze medals. Head coach Steve Enright, assistant coach Kassidy Dmytriw and assistant coach Kiera Sparrow guided the team to victory. “The OLMP girls won their third consecutive regional championship in an intense match against the Bashaw Rebels. Despite being down 8-4 in the third set, the girls showed great resilience and came back to win 15-9,” said coach Enright. Players included Kylie Catacutan, Mackenzie Bird, Rachel Herder, Juliana Fowler, Addy Ross, Ella Mallon, Miraya Legare, Addy Campbell, Avery Webster, Teaghan Chabot, Molly Zarski and Mackenzie Lindholm. The OLMP boys’ team won bronze medals at regionals. The senior girls’ team were at zones in Lacombe last weekend, winning the gold medal to secure a spot in provincial play. Football The OLMP Royals won a hard fought, defensive battle, 15-13 against the Westlock Thunderbirds Friday, November 10 in the league semifinal. The Royals trailed at half time, 6-0. The Royals had the first possession of the second half and capped it off with a touchdown after burning seven minutes off the clock. The score was 8-6 Royals after the successful two-point convert. “The score remained that way until the fourth quarter when Royals quarterback, Tyson Chartrand put together another long drive, eating up almost six minutes and ended with another touchdown, scored by himself,” said Mike Rodin, a supporter of OLMP football. Wayde Cusack ran for the single point on the convert to make the score 15-6. Westlock scored a touchdown with just over a minute left to play, but the Royals were able to run out the remaining time to seal the win. Next up for the Royals is the league championship against Drayton Valley.

WWTP project update By Lori Larsen
City of Camrose Engineering Services manager Jeremy Enarson provided an update on the construction progress and current financial status of the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) project and Landfill Clay Purchase project to City Council during the October 30 Committee of the Whole meeting. According to the report all work related to the Landfill Clay Purchase project is now complete, and due to a significant reduction in the amount of clay that was moved from storage Cell I to the landfill stockpile, the final project is approximately $1,551,550, which is significantly lower than the approved budget of $3,104,000. “The WWTP upgrade project is expected to be substantially complete by December 2023,” said Enarson in his report. “With final cleanup of work being completed in the spring of 2024. Various construction activities will also carry into 2024, although these will not impact the performance of the upgraded WWTP.” Recent work completed on the Waste Water Treatment Plant project includes:

AMC Marlins were a rare bird in 1966 By Murray Green
Ron Stockdale owns a bright yellow 1966 AMC Marlin. “They only made these cars for three years, from 1965 to 1967. The best year was 1965 with just over 10,000 produced. In 1966, 4,547 were built and the last year they shut it down after 2,598 were built. They changed the design in 1967 somewhat. This car was customized and now has a power antenna, the outside mirrors are from a GM 1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass because I liked them,” Ron explained. “I had the bodywork and paint job done here in Camrose at Showtime Auto Refinishing because they were recommended to me by a friend and they did a good job. The fellow that worked on it, Daymion Weiss, now has his own body shop in Daysland. Guy (Hanak) from Showtime painted it and both were excellent,” said Ron. Before going to a bright yellow, the car was originally brown. “It wasn’t a nice attractive colour. When I brought the car home, I got it from Mount Vernon, Washington. I drove it home and I had my wife and daughter come out to look at it. My daughter, she was 16 at the time, said, ‘Dad what an ugly car.’ She sure likes it now,” he shared. “I saw these cars come

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Ron Stockdale didn’t like the brown or pale yellow paint of the original 1966 AMC Marlin, so he had it painted a bright yellow to make it stand out. The car was ahead of its time with a sleek fastback design.
out in the spring of 1965, I was 19 years old and I was serving a two-year mission in Kitchener, Ontario. I saw one, loved it and wanted one. I like the long elliptical window on the side with a fastback. I just loved it and
FUN FACTS
The Rambler Tarpon was a concept car, a compactsized sporty youth-oriented two+two hardtop coupe developed in 1963 by American Motors Corporation (AMC). It served to foretell the fastback design elements of the larger Rambler Marlin that was introduced in 1965. The Rambler Marlin became known as the AMC Marlin starting with the 1966 model year. All references to Rambler were removed from the car and promotional materials. The other changes were minor (a slight modification to the aluminum grille, a front sway bar made standard on six-cylinder models and an optional black vinyl roof cover that continued over the trunk opening). New was an electronic tach on the top of the dash. In competing with the Dodge Charger, Marlins offered more high-level trim packages than had previously been standard, as well optional floor or centre console mounted four-speed manual transmission and a dash-mounted tachometer, affected small changes in pricing and equipment that paralleled the competition. Despite these changes, Marlin production fell to 4,547 in 1966. The test Marlin’s standard drum brakes were criticized as inadequate, with the authors recommending the optional disk brakes.
wanted one so bad,” recalled Ron. “I wanted bright yellow, but they didn’t offer that colour. The yellow they had was very pale. Then I got married, had children and couldn’t afford one. Finally in 2005, I was on-line looking and found seven Marlins for sale in the United States. They were in various conditions, some just parts cars. This car was in drivable shape and my friend got it for me when I asked for his help,” continued Ron. “When he said it wasn’t that far away, I said let’s do that. He got it for me for $3,256 and he was on his way to California to visit his daughter so we, my son and I, got a ride with him to Washington and then we drove it back,” said Ron. “It took about two years to restore it and we added some custom things inside the car such as bucket seats, but stayed true to the body style. The car has custom gauges and is on air suspension so I can raise and lower the car. I drive the car
a lot. It has the original 327 engine, far different than a Chevy 327. This engine is bigger than a 327 Chev and it is the last year they made them. In 1967, they had 304 and 343 engines instead. Originally it had all four
drum brakes, but I changed the front brakes to disk. It didn’t have power brakes, so I had them put in a power booster and that made a world of difference. I added power windows and doors,” he said.

Refocus Alberta’s health care system By Jackie Lovely, MLA Camrose Constituency
It’s time to refocus Alberta’s health care system. We have heard loud and clear from Albertans that the current system centred on Alberta Health Services is complex and uncoordinated. AHS has evolved beyond its original acute care system mandate and is shouldering a burden it was not intended to carry and Albertans are facing long wait times and delays to the care they desperately need. It’s time to refocus how the system is structured and create a path toward a better health care system for you and your family. Alberta’s government announced that we are undertaking a significant refocusing of Alberta Health Services. The new structure will centre around four priority sectors: primary care, acute care, continuing care and mental health and addiction. This will ensure Albertans get the health care system that works for them. During this time, Albertans will continue to access health care services where they normally would and that will not change. You will continue to go to your regular care provider for checkups or general health concerns, a hospital for urgent or emergency care, mental health and addiction treatment and recovery services will still be available and continuing care or home care will still be available to you or your loved ones. This change will ensure that you and your family are front of mind for every health decision made. We know health care workers are the lifeline of the health care system. We know we need more doctors, nurses, paramedics and many more health care workers. Alberta’s government will continue to grow the health care workforce and every front line job will be protected during this transition. Our world-class health care workers will be consulted every step of the way. Their experience and expertise will help shape Alberta’s refocused health care system. This will ensure doctors, nurses and other health care workers have more input and help drive health care innovation at a local level. Refocusing the system means that Albertans will have health care that works for them, prioritizes their needs to find a primary care provider, get urgent care without long wait times, and improve access to the best continuing care options and supports for mental health and addiction. This collaborative, integrated, province wide health care system will improve outcomes for Albertans and empower health care workers to deliver quality care across the province. Alberta’s government is committed to engaging with health care workers, Albertans and listening to patients’ input as well. More information about public engagements will be provided as it becomes available. We also want to hear from Albertans. You are the patients, family members, seniors, and caregivers who use the system each day. Engagement session dates will be regularly updated on alberta.ca/healthcare. Input is valuable as we work toward a better health care system for all Albertans. Contact my office if you require my assistance. A reminder that I am a commissioner of oaths and a notary public and provide the service free for constituents. If you have any questions or concerns, contact my office. We are always here for you! Are you still going to be alive at the deadline? By Murray Green
Deadline is a murder mystery comedy play by Don Zolidis that the Churchmice Players are bringing to the Bailey Theatre stage next week. “I love comedies and I like seeing actors being able to express themselves on stage in a way that is entertaining to the audience. Mostly, I like to see shows that I can laugh about and I like putting on shows like that,” said director Darryl Bleau. “I spent a long time reading scripts to find the right one. I knew the style I wanted and size of cast that I wanted. I emailed the author and found out it wasn’t even published yet. In fact, it wasn’t even in the final form yet. I did a Zoom rehearsal with the script. It was the one, it’s funny, fresh and has the right size of cast (12 to 13 characters),” said Darryl. When eight mystery writers arrive at a legendary writer’s fog-shrouded island mansion in the North Atlantic, they think they’re ready for the Deadline Challenge–24 restful hours to write as much of their new novel as possible. “We held rehearsals and had people read parts to see where they fit in. Now I can see they are in the right characters and I couldn’t see it any other way. I personally got into acting on film this past year and learned some film

Camrose Churchmice Players will be performing on the Bailey Theatre stage on November 30 with Deadline, a comedy murder mystery. Kristen Bergman, left, as Brenda, Trevor McTavish as Morris and Marla Goetz-Moshuk as Linda Myers try to keep from killing each other as they solve the mystery.
elements that I can incorporate into this play, which will be a little different,” explained Darryl. “So far, it looks great in my head. I really like the Bailey for plays, it is a great place. It is a historic building and it lends itself to plays like this because it is older and fits into the theme,” Darryl added. But the Deadline Challenge is anything but restful. In reality, the writers are brought together to solve a murder—the vic-
tim yet be determined, and the killer yet to strike. If a writer can design and execute a perfect murder and get away with it, they’ll win a million dollars (which is a lot of money for a writer). Who will live? Who will die? Who will survive the Deadline? “It isn’t the typical murder mystery, it is a comedy first. My intension as the director is to be the advocate of the audience. I want to direct what I really want to see myself. I want
an entertaining show that people can have fun with,” he shared. A Christmas Deadline can be murder–especially if the Churchmice Players are involved. Once again, they are bringing a hilarious murder mystery filled with quirky characters to the Bailey Theatre. “We have wonderful costume, set and stage people helping us. We recruited people to help us. We have lots of props, so it is a group effort,” said Darryl.
Book your workplace party, family event or friends holiday get-together today and find out who lives and who dies. This will be the Canadian premiere of this show, and remember, the Deadline is rapidly approaching. You can see the play from Thursday to Saturday November 30 to December 2 at 6 p.m. dinner and 7:30 p.m. show. Sunday matinees begin on December 3 and 10 at 2 p.m. at the historical Bailey Theatre.

Remembrance service at CRE By Murray Green
The Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion held Remembrance Day Ceremonies on November 11 at the Camrose Regional Exhibition. The Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion led the Remembrance Day ceremony by observing two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. Master of Ceremonies was president Adrian Zinck and guest speaker was City of Camrose Police Chief Dean LaGrange. “I want to share with you a personal experience that impacted myself and my family profoundly in regards to recognizing those who have served, past present and future. I also wish to provide a caveat, that this is not about me, this is about the men and women who sacrifice so much, so often, for so many,” said Chief LaGrange. “Many of you may not know that there is a program run by the federal government where police officers volunteer to take part in peacekeeping/training opportunities around the globe, often in areas of conflict and turmoil, working alongside our military brothers and sisters. As a Calgary police officer, I took part in one of these NATO missions with other officers from across the country including RCMP, Vancouver, Toronto, Edmonton and others. We went on a year-long tour of duty to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom in November 2011. Our mandate was to provide democratic policing skills and concepts to the Afghan National Police in the midst of a war zone. Having no military background, I was perhaps a bit naïve on what to expect,
but I tried to educate myself on the hardships and challenges our military deals with routinely. Living on a US military base (Camp Eggers) in Kabul with a contingent of Canadian military personnel certainly had its challenges. Sleeping on beat-up concave mattresses, six to a room (in 20-foot seacans), stacked four high. Communal bathrooms, listening to Blackhawk helicopters and fighter jets roar in the background, along with various explosions and threat levels that changed on a daily basis. It was a surreal experience…and yet, I never heard any of them complain,” added Chief LaGrange. “However, I found these inconveniences were minor compared to the real sacrifice…leaving your loved ones behind for lengthy periods of time. This was the most difficult thing for me during my time in Afghanistan and yet I had the privilege of technology…talking to my family via Skype on a near daily basis. I remember watching the sun go down in Afghanistan and watching that same sun come up in the background as I video called my wife and kids back home. Realizing that many of these military veterans have done this time and time again gave me a little context of just how much they give up for our freedoms and way of life. What I had come to view as hardships and inconveniences paled in comparison to what our veterans endured for all of us,” said Chief LaGrange. “Sleeping in muddy trenches lined with razor wire instead of a concave mattress. Having to relieve yourself, hunkered down in a foxhole, instead of a communal bathroom. Listen-
ing to the screams of pain of your friends, instead of fighter jets roaring in the distance. Communicating by letter that took four months to get home, instead of daily Skype calls. Leaving loved ones behind and never coming home. I know our military veterans don’t sign up for recognition nor reward… they sign up out of a sense of duty and honour…and for that, we all owe them our deepest respect and gratitude. This is about those people who sacrifice themselves for so long and so often,” concluded Chief LaGrange. “On Remembrance Day, we honour Canadians who sacrificed their lives, both past and present (he honoured a family member by including a poem). We have to remember the sacrifices those in uniform made. We honour all soldiers who went overseas to protect our freedom,” said Zinck, on behalf of Battle River Crowfoot MP Damien Kurek. “We remember those who sacrificed–those 2.3 million men and women who served and currently serve. We honour those who volunteered, served, fought and died for our freedom. We also thank doctors and nurses. We think of those who lost sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, spouses, mothers, fathers and loved ones,” said MLA Jackie Lovely. “We respect those men and women who gave us this freedom that we have, but it came at a great cost to many. We will remember them,” said City of Camrose Mayor PJ Stasko. A reading of “In Flanders Fields”, several songs and laying of wreaths were also part of the service.

Florence Audrey Friend
November 23, 1934 ~ November 15, 2023 Florence Friend (nee Reber) was born in Hardisty, Alberta, on November 23, 1934, and passed away peacefully on November 15, 2023, at St. Mary’s Hospital, with her family at her side. After spending her early childhood in Hardisty, Florence moved with her parents, Helen and Lou Reber, sister Phoebe and brother Raymond, to Rosalind on land homesteaded in 1902 by her great-grandfather. In 1952, Florence married Ronald Friend and together they farmed until Ronald’s sudden passing on August 11, 1988. Florence was very much a farm wife. Raising four children, she was not only a homemaker but an equal partner in all of the farm work. Florence could, and did, operate all the farm equipment, fixed fence, milked cows, and tended to chickens, turkeys and beef cattle. She had a love for all animals and there was often some baby animal being nursed back to health under her care. Florence always had a large garden, harvested and preserved to last the whole winter. She would sew, knit and cut hair for not only her family, but neighbours as well. Her dedication to the Rosalind community meant many volunteer hours as well. She was an excellent cook and was frequently called upon to “make the gravy” for the annual fall suppers at the Rosalind Hall. Florence, we wonder how you did it all! Following Ronald’s death in 1988, Florence remained on the farm for seven more years before moving into Rosalind. She continued the farming operation with the help of her family and, even after moving to Rosalind, she helped out around the farm, maintaining her own beef herd. In Rosalind, one of the first things she did was prepare a huge garden spot for planting. She was very active in the community and loved to play cards and floor curl at the Rosalind Drop-In. In 2005, she moved to Camrose, where she continued to socialize with friends, playing cards and floor curling until her health no longer permitted her to continue. Florence was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour which eventually made it difficult for her to speak and impossible for her to play cards (her favourite pastime). Florence remained strong and determined in spite of the ravages of her disease. Her family was of utmost importance to her and she will be so dearly missed. Her strength in the face of all the challenges will be an enduring inspiration to all her family. Florence is survived by her children Greg (Cheryl) Friend, Cindy (Bill) Bowie, Harry (Charlene) Friend, and Steven (Jaclyn) Friend; grandchildren Matthew Friend, Jeffrey Friend, Brandy (Jarod) Banack, Wes Bowie, Nathan (Kristen) Bowie, Ashley (Dallas) Sehlstrom, Tara (Derek) Schneider, Brittny Friend (Bryce), Ryan Friend (Kelby), Chance Friend (Kailynne), Karli Haeberle, Kaitlin Haeberle (Casey), and Kirstin Haeberle; and fifteen great-grandchildren. Florence is also survived by her sister-in-law Sheila Reber. Florence was predeceased by her husband Ronald; infant son Reginald; her parents Lou and Helen Reber; brother Raymond Reber; sister Phoebe Reed; brother-in-law Bric Reed; niece Debbie Drever; and nephew Michael Reed. Florence was also predeceased by Ronald’s parents Harry and Edith Friend; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Bert and Genevieve Friend, Audrey and John Robertson, and Joyce and Al Moore. The family would like to thank: the Deer Meadows staff and residents for making it her home and for the care and support provided that allowed her to remain there until her recent hospitalization; to Camrose Home Care for the truly amazing support they provided to make it possible for Mom to stay at Deer Meadows for so long; to Becky McCarroll (Companion Care) whose visits and hugs Mom cherished; and to Dr. Morrow and the nursing staff St. Mary’s Hospital for their compassionate care and comforting hugs. As per Florence’s request, no funeral service will be held. A private family gathering and inurnment will take place at a later date. Charitable donations in Florence’s memory, for those who so chose, would be gratefully received by Rosalind Agricultural Society, Greenview Cemetery, Cross Cancer Hospital Wig Program or a charity of one’s choice. Adam Keith Leibel
November 10, 1991 ~ November 12, 2023 Adam Keith Leibel of Camrose, Alberta, passed away on Sunday, November 12, 2023, at the age of 32 years. Adam was born in Camrose, on November 10, 1991, to Sheila (Wilson) and Keith Leibel. He was their first son, the second born after his sister Rochelle, and the last grandchild of eleven to be born on both sides. He was born and raised in Camrose and attended all his years of schooling there. He met his wife, Ashley, in Camrose through a mutual friend, and they were married on August 8, 2015. They lived on an acreage by Bawlf, and moved to Camrose in 2018. They welcomed their son, Walker, in 2022. They just recently purchased what was to be their forever home in 2023. Adam was a vital part of the Wenig Farm operations and farmed with his father-in-law for the past thirteen years. Adam got his Class 1 license and loved to drive trucks and big equipment. He followed his driving passion throughout his career, which took him all over Canada and into the United States. His most recent career took him into the world of truck dispatching and managing with Road to Rail Construction. This career allowed him to be home more often to do the job he loved the most, which was to be a dad. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Ashley; son Walker; father Keith Leibel; mother Sheila Wilson; stepmother Janet Chaney; siblings Rochelle (Cam) Birkheim, Kayla Wenig (Matt Reber) and Connor Wenig; parents-in-law Shane and Cathy Wenig; grandma Milligan, grandma Leibel, grandpa Wilson, grandma Joyce Wenig, grandparents Sylvia and Len Frankson; nieces and nephews Evelyn and Iris Birkheim, Memphis, Brodie and Dallas Reber; and numerous cousins, aunts, and uncles. Adam was predeceased by his stepfather Woody Heikamp; and grandfathers Sebastian Leibel, Bill Milligan, and Lorenz Wenig. Memorial donations in Adam’s memory will be announced later. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at the CityLights Church, 4920-48 Street, Camrose, officiated by Rev. Brian Hunter. Adam was taken from his loved ones suddenly on November 12, 2023. Adam was an organ donor and has already saved or helped thirty other lives. Due to his organ donation, life springs from death, sorrow turns to hope, and a terrible loss becomes a gift. Adam willingly helped anyone he could during his life, so organ donation and helping now is fitting in death. Adam’s family wished to thank the EMS crew, staff at St. Mary’s Hospital, the staff at the University of Alberta Hospital, and S.T.A.R.S. Air Ambulance for their life-saving measures. There are not enough words to express thanks to all of their family and friends for the meals, gifts, visits, and phone calls. Adam would be so thankful for the powerful support system in place for Ash, Walker and family. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Doreen Reimer
Our dear mother, Doreen Reimer, was born on September 11, 1931, to John R. and Margaret Isaac Barkman at Kleefeld, MB. Jesus called her home at sunrise on November 12, 2023. As the oldest child, she was a busy girl, helping in the home and being a big sister to her eight siblings. She enjoyed school and her friends. There, a love of reading and poetry was born. When she was 12 years old, she accepted Jesus as her Saviour and was baptized, becoming a member of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. When she was twenty, she travelled to Alberta to work in the Linden Nursing Home, and later took nurse’s training. It was here she met her future husband, Fred Reimer. They were married on August 19, 1955, at Kleefeld, MB. They settled on a mixed farm at Linden, where their first two daughters were born. In 1961, they moved to Edberg where four more children made their family complete. Caring for her husband and children was her delight, singing as she went about her work. She devoted her life to making a secure, happy home for her family. She loved nature and beauty, gardening, and birds. After twenty years, another move took the family to Carrot River, SK. Each new family member was welcomed and loved. Her grandchildren were a special joy to her. Sorrow came with the loss of their youngest son, David, in 2017. Their sunset years found them in Camrose, AB, living at Rosealta Lodge, where they enjoyed making new friends. Dad’s passing four years ago left her lonely, but she carried on with courage and gratefulness. When attending church became difficult, the weekly Sunday school and coffee in her room was a bright spot for Mom. We are thankful for God’s nearness through her life and look forward to meeting her in Heaven. She leaves behind: her children Bonnie and Tony Isaac, Sinclair MB, Candace and Ken Thiessen, Cromer, MB, Vickie and Gerald Thiessen, Edberg, AB, Danny and Lenore Reimer, Mistatim, SK, Lorna and Glenn Johnson, Lakin, KS; daughter-in-law Lenore Reimer, Vanderhoof, BC; fifteen grandchildren; thirteen greatgrandchildren; four step-granddaughters; brothers and sisters Viola Spensely, Verna Penner, Melvin and Gwen Barkman, Yvonne Barkman, Audrey and Ed Enns, Wilbert Barkman, Mabel Penner; Dad’s family, Jac Reimer, Anne Baerg, Susanna Reimer, Howard and Edith Reimer, Ralph and Gerri Reimer, Gilbert and Marilyn Reimer. She was predeceased by one son, one grandson, one sister and one brother. Funeral Services for Doreen were held on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Edberg Mennonite Church, Edberg, Alberta. Please visit www.sunsetltd.ca for more information and to leave condolences for the family.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Special Olympics Camrose meet the Vikings on the courts By Lori Larsen
The Special Olympics Basketball team took on the Augustana Vikings men’s hockey team on Sunday, November 12, at Sparling School, for some friendly and exciting basketball action. “Special Olympic Association Camrose Affiliate athletes are always excited to be challenged by community members to a fun game of basketball,” noted Special Olympic Association Camrose Affiliate long time volunteer Carol Wideman. The Augustana Vikings teams have been connecting with Special Olympics Camrose Affiliate athletes in an effort to not only assist the athletes with some volunteer coaching but also build strong community partnerships on and off the courts.

I know they have an exhausting schedule be-

“The match-up got arranged early in the year when I was looking for someone to play against as I knew putting the athletes into a game situation would help them put the skills they have learned to the test,” said Special Olympics Camrose Affiliate basketball head coach and Vikings men’s basketball player Jack Smilski. “I knew some of the athletes were big hockey fans and liked going to Vikings games so my
tween practice and school but it means a lot to myself and the athletes that they took a couple hours out of their Sunday to come help us.” But for Jack the “ball” doesn’t drop there. With the coaches from last year graduating and moving on in other directions, Smilski decided to take on the responsibility of the head coach job this year. “I started volunteering with the Special Olympics as a way to help out

I'm old enough to remember when Black Friday was just one day and not all month. Grocery stores need to start contributing to Black Friday sales. I don't need 20% off a flat screen TV. Give me half-price laundry detergent and $2 boxes of cereal and you better believe I'll be at your doors at 3 a.m.!

Why does the school pick-up line feel like Walmart on Black Friday? Parents roll in two hours early to be first in line. Calm down! It's just your kid, not a 60" flat screen TV. November doesn't have afternoons. It's just morning until 2:00, then night. I love this time of year. All the half-drunk bottles of water in my car are cold again. I always carry a pebble with me to throw at people who sing Christmas carols in November. I call it my jingle bell rock. Not to discredit Taylor Swift's work, but as impressive as it is that she writes her own songs, I write a new song to sing to my dog every day and I'm not a billionaire. Hunters, want to find a big buck? Just drop down from full coverage to liability on your truck. I never understood why a set of false teeth is called "dentures". They really missed an opportunity to call them "substitooths". How long is one minute? It depends on what side of the bathroom door you're on. I've just turned off the news and put on a serial killer documentary to relax. The most unbelievable thing in movies is when someone guesses the password of a computer that's not theirs. I can't even figure out my own password … that I changed yesterday.
Employee of the Month – Part 2
Central Agencies Realty Home of the Week
Renovated starter home
By Lori Larsen
If you are looking at having the freedom of your own home at an affordable price while building equity, this mobile home is the perfect place to start. Situated on a corner lot, there is plenty of room to enjoy the privacy of your own backyard. The home itself has undergone significant renovations. An addition at the front offers a large front entry/ laundry combination. The living room is flooded with natural light from the good-sized front window. The open concept keeps conversations flowing in the adjacent dining area and kitchen. Striking new dark shaker cabinets and stainless appliances add that touch of modern to the kitchen.
Two bedrooms and a four-piece updated bathroom complete your living space. The second bedroom could act as a home office or hobby room. The completely fenced backyard is the ideal spot for a pet to roam and for you to enjoy the privacy of your own yard. The large storage shed is great for housing seasonal items. The exterior of the home has also had some upgrades, including new windows and siding. Home ownership is well within your reach with this home located at #16, 4504-41 Street, and priced well within a starter budget at $35,000. Boss: "You're late." Me: "I stopped to pet a dog." Boss: "You're four hours late." Me: "It was a puppy!" If you're already late for work, you might as well take your time and get yourself a snack. You can't be late twice. Boss: "Staff meeting at 3:00 today." Me: "I can't come, I'm allergic." Boss: "But we're not serving any food." Me: "Now I really can't come." Telling your coworker a story in between customers is an extreme sport. Wife: "Ugh. Here comes Brad from my work." Me: "Which one is he again?" Wife: "The one who says things and you can never tell if it's a compliment or insult." Brad: "Well, well, well, someone smells like muffin mix." Me: "I'm sorry I'm late. I broke down on the way here." Boss: "Did they tow your car?" Me: "Car?" Being new at a job is so intimidating. It feels like you're a new character on Season 5 of a TV show. Me: "I'm going to start being nicer to people at work." Coworker: "You could start by not making sarcastic comments." Me: "That's a bit extreme." Me: "I'm sorry I can't come into work today. The stress is bad for the baby." Boss: "What baby?" Me: "…Me." Me: "Sorry, I can't come in today, I have a wee cough." Boss: "You have a wee cough?" Me: "Really? Thanks, Boss, see you next week."
