Kodiaks not having a November to remember By Murray Green
Camrose Kodiaks have lost five straight games in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). They came home from Canmore with two losses on November 10 and 11. On Remembrance Day, they played a game they don’t want to remember. Canmore won 5-2, but they built up a 5-0 lead before Myles Gauld, his fifth, and
Owen Lansing, his fourth, replied for the Kodiaks in the third period. Three of the Eagles’ tallies were on the power play. Goalie Charlie Zolin stopped 27 of 32 shots he faced. Camrose recorded 20 shots on goal. The night before Canmore scored the only goal in the first period, but Lucas Lemieux, his fourth, scored
the equalizer in the middle frame on a power play. In the third, the Eagles soared with three tallies in a row to take command of the contest. Alexander Bryson notched his fourth of the season to close the scoring. Goalie Elliott Pratt turned away 24 of 28 shots directed his way. Camrose recorded 22 shots on goal. Camrose lost 5-0 to Whitecourt
on November 7. Goalie Pratt stopped 12 of 13 shots directed his way, while Zolin turned away 13 of 17 shots. Camrose recorded 21 shots on goal. The Kodiaks are at home against Drayton Valley on November 24 and Calgary on November 26 (2 p.m.).

Vikings racers attend youth Olympic skiing trials By Murray Green
The lack of snow in Camrose didn’t stop two Camrose Ski Club members from tearing up the trails in Canmore. Ava Heie and Dawson Ferguson have been busy skiing at a number of events, including Youth National Cross-country Ski Team Trials earlier this month. “After the trials, Heie placed among the top youth women in Canada and has now been invited to the World Youth trials in Val Cartier in Quebec in January. Ferguson is hopeful that his performance at the trials will result in one of three spots on the Youth Olympic Games Team, which will be announced within the next month,” said Brianna Schultz, of the club. The team will compete in the Youth Olympics in Korea in 2024. Both Heie and Ferguson have been selected to attend the Biathlon Alberta Shooting Stars team camp in Canmore. Additionally, Ferguson has been selected to attend Biathlon National Team camp at the end of November, while Heie is one of six Alberta biathletes to be

Stay healthy in winter By Murray Green
Influenza is a viral infection that typically circulates mainly during the fall and winter months. While people often use the term flu to describe any kind of mild illness, such as a cold or stomach virus, the real influenza is different. It produces symptoms that are typically more serious than the common cold and sticks around longer, according to Alberta Health Services. The flu is usually caused by influenza viruses A and B. There are different strains of the flu virus every year. These viruses mutate and change which is why there is a new flu vaccine each year. Some common symptoms of influenza are fever or feeling feverish, chills and shivering, body aches, headaches, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, fatigue, tiredness and weakness. Symptoms of influenza usually present between one and four days after being around someone with the virus. Then, the symptoms can be at their worst for three or four days before starting to feel better. It can take one to two weeks to completely recover. Most people get better without problems. But sometimes influenza can lead to a bacterial infection such as an ear infection, sinus infection, or bronchitis. Less often, and in the most serious cases, influenza can lead to pneumonia. Influenza spreads primarily through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks. You can also contract the flu by touching a surface or object contaminated with the virus and then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes. Influenza can be mistaken for a severe cold because some symptoms are similar. The flu comes on suddenly, while a cold usually develops more gradually. The flu is often more severe and can lead to complications like pneumonia. A high fever is more common with the flu than with a cold. Flu symptoms typically last one to two weeks, while cold symptoms usually resolve within a few days. Influenza can lead to serious complications, especially in vulnerable populations like the elderly, young children and those with weakened immune systems. Certain people are at higher risk of problems from influenza, including young children, pregnant women, older adults and people with long-term illnesses.

Howe returns with international experience By Murray Green
Black belt Evan Howe of Camrose has been going to taekwondo tournaments since he joined the sport. “I love going to tournaments and competing against the best since I was a white belt at age eight. It’s in my blood, just love it. Usually, I win and that keeps me going. I learn a lot from others and I’ve gone everywhere in Alberta, to Saskatchewan, Toronto and recently Italy,” the 15-year-old shared. “This Italy trip (last July) was special because it was a world tournament with international competitors. People from Poland, England, Georgia, Italy, Canada and all over the place came to it. Competition included sparring, patterns, team patterns and team sparring. It was special to me because I was personally invited, which not very many first dans get invited to it. Grandmaster Nathan Doerksen (of Camrose) was invited as an honour, and he was honoured at the tournament,” said the Grade 11 student. There are eight belts in taekwondo, the first being white, which you receive when you commence training. The following belts are yellow, blue, red, red/ black, Cho Dan Bo (dark blue), black/white and black belt. There are nine levels of black belt called dans. On each of the colour belts, you wear stripes indicating your level of attainment on that belt. “Going to Italy is a long ways away, so my family decided to take a trip to Rome, Naples and to the tournament, which was held in Ready or Cosenza. I knew some guys from Toronto because I went to a competition there. It was similar to Edmonton and Calgary, just a step higher. At the international tournament, they bring the best of the best. It was very fun and I learned a lot. During the tournament, I competed in patterns first. It has two people doing patterns and five judges. They decide who did the patterns better. I lost the first round because I messed up some moves. Later came the sparring events. In taekwondo, it is free sparring with kick, punch and block as many times as you can to get as many points as you can until the round is over,” explained Evan. In colour belt sparring, there are one- and two-minute rounds. “In black belt, you have a coach and he is there for a reason. We spar for two minutes and then get a break to talk to our coach and see what we need to do better. Then we go for another two-minute round. These rounds can be very exhausting. You could face eight to 10 people in a round so very deadly, tiring,” he said. In Italy, Evan had trouble finding his weight class. “Everyone was a little light for me, so I was at the top of the weight class. They ended up making a special division for me with another guy from Poland. This guy was very good. He could kick high, punch

fast and move fast. I like to use the first round as a testing round. I found out he was very good with his hands. Grandmaster Doerksen was my coach and I sat down to listen to him. He told me the Polish are good with their hands, that I should keep him at a distance by using more kicks. When you are tired, you don’t always listen,” laughed Evan. “So I enter ed the second round like the first round and I lose with the hands. In the second minute, it finally clicks in, after a few blows to the face. I start using kicks and they worked pretty well. This one kick, he was in the corner, after fighting with hands, I stepped back and did a high spinning kick to the head (missing by an inch). Only two people are fighting, everyone else is watching. Everyone could see it and wondered where that came from. The match was decided by one point. I felt I could beat anyone at that point, but it was a learning experience. I hugged him after the match and we received our medals.” Next up was team patterns. Evan was the only first dan black
belt from Alberta. He joined the guys from Toronto to form a Canadian team. “An hour before the competition, we decided to do this, only one hour to practice one of the most difficult patterns. We faced a team from Italy which has had years of experience together doing team patterns. We did our patterns and it went well. Then the Italy team came on and you know that they knew what they were doing. Everyone is shocked at how good they are. Again, it was a learning experience and taekwondo is all about learning.” Evan talked about the friendships that he made at the tournament. “After team patterns, tensions rose so high because countries were mad at who won and lost. So, they ended up canceling team sparring. We had an extra day to travel then.” But Evan didn’t end the tournament when it was finished. “After we stayed in Naples for a little bit. We went to the train station and went to a McDonald’s. Our bags were right behind us, but we were not paying attention. In sparring, I won a gold medal,
and in team patterns, I won a silver medal. Somebody came upstairs to where we were sitting and stole my bag, ran out and we couldn’t find him. We knew there was a security camera, so we went to the police station to have them view the footage to catch the thief. They told us to leave them an email and they would get back to us.” Evan viewed it as an experience and went home. He has yet to recover the medals. “As a first dan, I can now teach. I help out five or six days a week for five hours a day. I teach anywhere from four-year-olds to 50-year-olds and in all the colour ranges. Taekwondo is lifelong learning and part of a lifestyle. It is a fun job teaching and learning, and I may want to have my own club at point in the distant future,” said Evan. He wants to move up to second dan in the next year or two.

Camrose & Area Animal Shelter, with the generous help of the community, are hoping to be able to ensure the furry friends housed at the Shelter will have a merry Christmas. One sweet way you can assist the Shelter in providing responsible homes for happy, healthy pets, is to take part in their Purdys Chocolates Fundraiser. Those wishing to participate in the fundraiser can order online by November 26. Visit the Camrose & Area Animal Shelter website at www.camroseanimalshelter.ca (Events) tab for ordering. Orders will be available for pick up at the Shelter on December 10. On Saturday, November 25, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., bring your pet to the Camrose & Area Animal Shelter, Bay 8, 4617-41 Street, for a photo with jolly old St. Nick (aka Santa Claus). Proceeds from the photo session will go to support the Shelter. Looking for a little extra something before Christmas while giving back in a “purrfectly” wonderful way. Come out to the Peace Hills Bingo Hall in Wetaskiwin (3725-56 Street) on December 2, from noon until 3 p.m. Your letter dobbing will help out the Camrose & Area Animal Shelter. The Shelter also accepts monetary donations and donations of required Shelter products any time. For more information on donating visit the Shelter website or contact by telephone at 780-608-0091. Visit the Shelter for the monthly Meet and Greet on Saturday, November 25, from 1 until 4 p.m. This is your opportunity to meet some adorable, adoptable pets, tour the facility and speak with any of the staff/ volunteers on hand to learn more about what and who keeps the Shelter operating. Shelter cats can also be seen most days at Camrose Pet Valu and during the open hours at the shelter (last Saturday of each month). Even if you are not ready to adopt, perhaps volunteering at the Shelter may be a way for you to enjoy furry companionship all the while helping an incredible organization. The Shelter is always welcoming new volunteers to help provide for the needs of the animals in their care or to help with fundraising events. For more information on the Camrose & Area Animal Shelter, visit the website at www.camroseanimalshelter. ca.
