Battle River Community Foundation board member Wes Campbell, presented the cheque to the Flagstaff Food Bank board secretary Lynne Jenkinson.

The Flagstaff Food Bank provides food and hygiene items for people in need in Flagstaff. The funding will be used to buy items for monthly hampers for clients. The Food Bank presently is filling on average 70 hampers per month which are feeding up to 147 individuals and family members.

The grant is funded from income earned in the Fredella and Harry Anderson Fund, the Ruth and

Sid James Memorial Fund, and the Foundation’s community funds. These type of funds allow the Foundation board to match annual grant applicants with the interests donors wish to support.

The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support organizations in east central Alberta, which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future.

Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations.

Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $9,308,006 to support charitable activities in the Battle River Region.

A desperately needed holiday

“Most Canadians ‘really need’ a vacation, poll shows. But can they afford it?” – Global News

“Majority of Canadians plan to stay close to home on this year’s summer vacation, survey finds,” –CTV News

These are just a couple of headlines that speak to the outlook Canadian families face this coming summer. We are dealing with unprecedented financial strains from tax hikes, inflation, interest rate increases and other economic pressures.

It can be especially felt with the rising costs of gas, groceries and household utilities, and that has eliminated the prospect of a summer holiday while so many are working more just to make ends meet…or, like I hear from so many, are slowly falling behind.

After nine years of NDP/Liberal policies, Canadians are the ones facing the brunt of this government’s fiscal and monetary mismanagement.

A few examples of this are the nearly $3,000 that an average Alberta family pays in the Liberal carbon tax yearly, the $700 increase nationally for the average family’s cost of groceries per year, and the skyrocketing food bank usage that we see everywhere from small towns to big cities. We know this is true, not only from headlines and surveys but from the stories you share with me, many of which are heartbreaking.

Common sense Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre, are listening to Canadians and are calling on the government to take a small and practical step to give all Canadians a much-needed break. We have proposed a “federal fuel tax holiday” in the form of a motion to give a temporary break from all federal fuel taxes from now until Labour Day. This proposal eliminates the carbon tax, the federal fuel tax and the GST on gasoline and diesel until September 2nd.

While Conservatives will not stop fighting to axe the carbon tax and provide permanent tax relief to Canadians, this temporary proposal is meant to be a nonpartisan measure to give folks a much needed chance to get ahead.

For the average Alberta family, this would amount to $955 in savings, something I know would be put to good use by everyone who benefits. And we know that this estimate is low for so many rural families that depend on their cars and trucks to get around.

Canadians need this tax break to catch up on bills or even be able to afford a modest vacation. It is time for the Trudeau Liberal government to prioritize the well-being of its citizens by providing much needed common sense relief.

It is time to give you, and all Canadians, the summer tax holiday that is so deserved.

County examines cemetery requests

Each year, more abandoned cemeteries or societies struggle with the upkeep of old grave sites within Camrose County.

At a regular meeting of council on June 11, a request for funding from the Duhamel Historical Society was added to the agenda.

“I move that Camrose County council respectfully deny the request for funding from the Duhamel Historical Society for maintenance of the cemetery and grounds of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Duhamel,” said councillor Carlene Wetthuhn.

Council received a request from the Duhamel Historical Society to provide $2,000 in funding for the maintenance of the cemetery and grounds of the St. Thomas Catholic Church.

Instead councillor Don Simpson moved to direct administration to prepare a cemetery funding policy to examine the best way to handle the situation of old cemeteries.

“As far as I know, we have about 35 cemeteries spread throughout the County that could also request some amount of funding since maintaining cemeteries is a growing concern for municipalities across the province. If all of these cemeteries receive this level of funding, the cost would be $70,000,” pointed out administrator Teresa Gratrix.

Flagstaff County provides $625 annually to cemeteries in Flagstaff County. Beaver County has provided funding for cemetery maintenance through their Community Support Requests Policy, but there is no formal policy for cemeteries specifically.

“In the past, funds from the campground on Highway 21 along the Battle River offset the costs of maintaining the grounds of this 140-year-old church and cemetery,” said Odean Trautman, president of the Duhamel Historical Society, in a letter to council.

“We are requesting $2,000 to help keep this unique historic site looking beautiful and a treasure to the County.”

Bones tourney celebrates community spirit

Members of the Rosalind Elks are excited to be hosting the first, of what they hope to be annual, Bones Tournament on Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23 at the Rosalind Arena and Campground.

Planned as a family event, inviting a maximum of 64 mixed teams, four members per team, the tournament offers friendly competitive games with skills resembling that of bowling.

Competitors range in all ages and are tasked at throwing resin facsimiles of bones at the opposing team’s row of bones, with the aim of knocking down the opposing team’s bones in as few throws as possible.

The team that knocks down all the opposition’s bones first will be declared the winner of that game. Participants and guests are invited to come out for the weekend and set up camp, available on site for a fee (note there are no services).

The Bones Tournament is a major fundraiser for the Rosalind Elks and funds raised will assist in helping the club to continue supporting vital initiatives in the community.

Rosalind Elks is a charity organization with a mandate to assist members of the community in need.

“We are there for all of the needy people in our community,” noted Rosalind Elks leader Mark Yuha. “We sponsor lifts, wheelchairs, and other mobility devices and we assist unfortunate families who have come across hard times due to illness and other unfortunate events.”

Aside from providing these services to those with specific needs in the community, the Rosalind Elks also offers an annual $2,000 scholarship.

The Rosalind Elks has a 95-year history of offering a gathering for likeminded individuals with a mandate to provide support for fellow community members. The longest serving member of the Rosalind Elks was Alan Bowie, who was also the longest serving member of Elks Canada.

“Alan passed away three years ago after serving 83 years,” remarked Mark.
