Much of what we think we know about sport is not quite what it seems – and, frequently, such myths and misleading stories are used by those in positions of power to uphold their preferred vision of how sports should be. As a result, myths play an important role in the modern world of sport. Myths are often used to maintain the status quo, or to support particular projects or ideas. One of the places where the use of myth is most prominent is the modern Olympic Games. Olympic officials, Olympic boosters, and, in particular, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have utilized mythic stories, distorted versions of reality, and, in some cases, deliberate falsehoods to promote their agendas for the Olympic Games. As we look ahead to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, next month, this is a good time to consider how some of these Olympic myths have shaped our understanding of the games. For example, one of the most powerful myths related to the Modern Olympics is that the amateur ideals that have guided the Olympic movement since the late 19th century are based on amateur principles that originated at the Ancient Olympic Games in Greece. According to this view of ancient Greek sport, the original participants in the Olympics were “pure” amateur athletes, competing out of a simple love of sport and for no material gain. However, the reality of the ancient Greek games is that many Olympic athletes were very similar to today’s professional athletes. Although there were no direct money prizes for winning at Olympia – champions simply received an olive wreath – Olympic victors were usually richly rewarded by their home cities following the games. Successful Olympians received cash gifts, generous pensions, civic appointments, and, in at least one case, a senate seat. According to historian

David Young, such awards could be worth a modernday equivalent of up to $1 million. And top athletes earned significant prizes at other sporting competitions in ancient Greece, as well. Ancient Olympians even acted like today’s “free agents” and competed for different city-states when they were offered more money. For example, the sprinter Astylos won Olympic titles for Croton in 488 BC and 484 BC, and then another Olympic crown for Syracuse in 480 BC. Croton was experiencing economic difficulties at the time, and Syracuse likely promised him more lucrative incentives for victory. The ancient Greeks didn’t even have a word for “amateur.” Instead, ancient amateurism is a myth, created by 19th-century sportsmen who sought an earlier precedent for the type of elitist sporting system they themselves favoured in the contemporary world. Therefore, in contrast to what the IOC claimed for almost a century, professional athletes could actually be considered more legitimate Olympians than amateurs. And even though professionals have been allowed to compete in the modern games since 1992, a sense of amateur purity is still

attached to the Olympics. In comparison, our “regular” professional sports somehow seem more tainted by money and greed than the Olympic Games. Another influential myth put forward by the IOC is the idea that the Olympic Games are not political. This long-standing notion of neutral Olympics free from politics serves as a way of stifling dissent and protest, such as potential criticism of Russia’s draconian antigay legislation by athletes or coaches during the Sochi Olympics. But in fact, the Olympic Games have always been about politics. Since the Olympic Games were re-established in 1896, the political elements of the competition have been central to the meaning and purpose of the Olympics. After all, the main goal of the Olympic revival in the late 19th century was to foster international peace by uniting the youth of the world in “friendly” athletic competition. This is an explicitly political goal. And, for decades, cities and countries have used the opportunity to host the Olympic Games as an instrument of image-building, self-promotion, and propaganda. In other words, the Olympics are inherently political. Like the myth of ancient amateurism, the myth of politics “intruding” on the Olympic Games serves the interests of the IOC and allows those in power to pursue their own (often political) goals. In the lead-up to the Sochi Olympics, this is just one of several selfserving Olympic myths that demand closer attention. Camrose Association for Community Living was blessed by strong community support in 2013. “We received ongoing support from community members who demonstrated their commitment to our success by volunteering their time, attending our silent auction charity dinner, making financial donations or encouraging the individuals we serve,” said CAFCL executive director Esther McDonald. The charity auction raised $100,554 for family services, worker safety equipment and the Kandu

Summer Camp program, which in 2013 had 33 campers who participated in camp days filled with a wide variety of recreation, sport and craft activities which helped foster relationships and build friendships. “Five families were provided with subsidies through generous donations to help make the camp experience a reality,” said McDonald. Jamie Roth made presentations in 10 local classrooms about his first hand experience living with brain injury after a

motorcycle injury. Students were engaged and learned important prevention tools to protect themselves from brain injury. Sibshops workshops provided a meaningful way for siblings of a child with a disability to connect with each other, to share their experiences, and support each other in a unique way. “Participants shared in a variety of activities and started a pen-pal program with a sister organization in Edmonton,” said McDonald. CAFCL participated in an accreditation review in

November and passed with flying colours. “Accreditation ensures our individuals in service, the families we serve, and our funders that we are providing excellent services in an effective and efficient manner,” said McDonald. Upgrades and renovations to the Burgess building included a barrier-free handicap washroom, a storage space in the main programming area, new paint and flooring and structural repairs. “It is important to us that we maintain our

building to provide a comfortable, up-to-date facility for those we serve,” said McDonald. Staff structure changes were made to ensure the adult services are as efficient and effective as possible, as well as to focus more on outcomes (independence, inclusion and community connections) for the more than 430 individuals who receive services. CAFCL is currently in need of program materials for TIPS and PCAP to be help young moms become better parents.

Canada Safety Council scholarship available The Canada Safety Council is now accepting applications for the Sarah Beth Therien Memorial Scholarship. The annual $2,500 scholarship is in honour of Sarah Beth Therien, a longtime employee of the Canada Safety Council and a passionate advocate for child and traffic safety. Sarah made

medical history in 2006 as the first Canadian organ donor after cardiac death. The competition is open to graduating high school students entering their first year of post-secondary studies. Current undergraduate and college students are also eligible to apply. Applicants must clearly describe initiatives they

January 31 is deadline for dog registrations By Dan Jensen

Time is running out for Camrose residents wishing to licence their dog(s). The City of Camrose animal control bylaw (2357/07) requires all dogs six months of age or older to be licenced prior to Jan. 31 of each year. The fee for altered dogs (those that have been spayed or neutered) is $20. The fee for unaltered dogs and guard dogs six months of age and over is $40. The licence fee for a dangerous dog (meaning a dog of any age, including a guard dog that has chased, attacked or bitten any person or other domestic animal, shown a propensity, disposition or potential to attack or injure without provocation, or been made the subject of an order under the Dangerous Dog Act) is $150. “While the Animal Control Bylaw does not classify any specific breeds as dangerous or vicious, any dog could be deemed dangerous based on the actions/behaviour of that dog,” states the City of Camrose website. The cost of obtaining a licence after Jan. 31 is $30 for an altered dog, $50 for a unaltered dog or guard dog, and $250 for a dangerous dog. The fine for having an unlicenced dog is $75 for first offence. Fines for second and subsequent offences are $150 and $300 respectively. If a dangerous dog or guard dog bites or attacks a person or animal, causing injury, the owner shall be subjected to a fine of $1,500. Owners of dangerous dogs must maintain in force a policy or liability insurance in a form satisfactory to the city manager, providing third party liability coverage in a minimum amount of $500,000 for injuries caused by the owner’s dog. Owners who licence their dogs are issued a metal dog tag which has been stamped with a number and the year of the licence. The tag must be attached to the collar or harness worn by the dog. Owners must remove any defecation left by their dog on public property or private property other than their own. Camrosians who have had their dog impounded must pay pound fees to cover the cost of taking care of it. They may also be given a ticket for allowing the dog to run at large. If so, they will have seven days from the date of the ticket to pay the fine (excluding weekends). Any dog which has been placed in a pound shall be kept therein for a period of not less than three clear days, exclusive of Saturdays, Sundays and statutory holidays, unless claimed by the owner or otherwise disposed of in accordance with the Animal Control Bylaw. About Time Productions presents funding request By Dan Jensen

About Time Productions is requesting $2,500 to promote Camrose this summer. About Time Productions youth will once again be performing alongside the Chamber of Commerce Mirror Lake Express train in the 2014 parades in Calgary, Edmonton, Camrose, Ponoka and St. Albert. “We do think it is both tourism and economic development that we are doing,” explained About Time Productions board member John Howard in a presentation to City council Jan. 6. The projected cost of About Time Productions attending the parades, including transportation and meals, is $3,092.50. The Camrose Chamber of Commerce, which has confirmed to the City it would prefer that any funding for About Time Productions be

handled separately from its own funding requests (which were presented in November), will be paying the cost of accommodation before the parade in Calgary, while About Time Productions will be paying $592.50 from its own funds. About Time Productions received a grant of $2,500 from the previous council before the election in October to cover the deficit it had occurred in representing Camrose in 2013. “About Time Productions incurred many unforeseen expenses that, as a non profit, we cannot afford,” said a letter written to the City by About Time Productions secretary Lorraine Bell. “We purchased bright red t-shirts boasting Camrose on the back to proudly show our hometown pride. Although not required by the Chamber, the shirts

brought a uniform look to our parade entry and our youth wore them throughout their time at the pre-parade and post-parade celebrations, thus bringing more interest to our group and to the city. We also were required, due especially to insurance reasons, to hire a bus and driver to take us to the parades.” Councillor Max Lindstrand said while it is an incredibly clever idea to involve youth in the promotion of the city, the organization that requests them to participate is the one that should foot the bill and budget accordingly. Mayor Norm Mayer added a point of clarification when he noted that the Chamber decides on the parades at which Camrose should be represented. Howard said About Time Productions would like to know whether their

expenses should be paid by the City or the Chamber. “If About Time Productions is contracted by both the City and Chamber to do these events, my fear is, and I hate to quote scripture at a council meeting, is that no man can serve two masters. I would just as soon have one person in charge in terms of that contracting, but that it is not the way it has been in the past and it looks like it is not the way it is going to be this year.” About Time Productions president Sandra Howard told council the parades are a great experience for the kids who are participating. “They are used to being on the stage singing and dancing, but with this they are on the street. They have a lot of fun doing it and I think it shows well for Camrose.” Bell said About Time Productions as a group and the youth performers indi-

vidually were incredibly proud to represent Camrose in 2013 “The parades gave our youth an incredible opportunity to perform in front of television cameras and up to half a million people, with us happily branding Camrose in large letters. We were highlighted on CBC and in the Calgary Herald with our entry. Our performers were warmly regarded by the crowds, highlighted on both television and YouTube.” Bell said About Time Productions was asked to attend the parade as a promotional junket, with the sole reason being the official promotion of the city and its businesses and events. “We appreciate the financial support of the Chamber in the covering of the hotels and believe it would be a nice partnership opportunity for the City as well.”

Literacy Day activities foster a love for books By Laurel Nadon The Camrose Booster

It’s a surprising statistic that approximately 30 per cent of adult Canadians don’t have the literacy skills required for everyday tasks. With this in mind, Camrose Family Literacy and the Camrose Public Library will once again team up for an evening of activities for Family Literacy Day on Jan. 27. That statistic is a huge problem, says Lynne Hartwick, program coordinator for Camrose Family Literacy. “It’s hard to believe that, but statistics show there are different levels of literacy,” Hartwick said, noting that this statistic has been high for a long time. She said that a large factor is that children are often not ready to begin school. Ways to encourage readiness are reading to children, having books in the home, creating positive feelings about books and games, singing, playing and talking with your children. “The more you do of those things, the more they’ll be ready for school,” Hartwick said. “Reading spans every subject. Reading is very essential to almost everything you do later on in life.”

Family Literacy Day activities will be held at the library on Monday, Jan. 27 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The theme of this year’s Family Literacy Day event, being held on Monday, Jan. 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the library, is 15 Minutes of Fun. The evening kicks off with crafts, games and sharing ideas of how to make activities and games in the home encourage reading skills. Edmonton Reptile Parties will then present some of their reptiles, amphibians and arachnids as well as offer photo opportunities for families. The event is free and also includes a snack. “It’s all about families learning together. Our whole

philosophy is that children learn the most from their families,” Hartwick said. “We encourage lots of positive activities and experiences, everyday things like talking and singing together.” Shannon Lupyczuk, a mother of two young children, is planning to attend the evening event at the library. “If you love books from an early age, it makes learning easier overall,” Lupyczuk said. Camrose Family Literacy works with preschoolers and their families, giving parents the information they need to help their children. Staff give tips on how to help get children interested in books, and with numeracy and problem-solving skills. They also offer the program Books for Babies, a four-week session for children up to one year old where parents learn the importance of play and music, and how to incorporate them into their homes to encourage language development. Hartwick noted that it’s important to begin listening, talking and singing to babies right away, even before they’re talking. “The more they hear the language, the more that language development is going to happen,” Hartwick said, adding that listening to adults speak helps children learn the rhythms and cadences of language in a way they can’t learn from television. Hartwick suggests that the best books for young children have an interesting story and simple illustrations. Nicole Bannick, program coordinator at the library, said that the Family Literacy Day event is a way to reach out to parents about the important role they play in encouraging literacy in their homes. “It’s an important event because parents are their children’s first and best lifelong teachers,” Bannick said, noting that simple activities such as reading a recipe together while cooking will promote reading skills. She suggests that games such as I-Spy, road sign games and any game that increases vocabulary are helpful. She said that these games can also assist parents who are struggling with literacy themselves. “By helping your child learn, you’re learning as well,” Bannick said. The library offers programs such as Books and Bounces, Tales for Twos and Threes, Concept Corner, Bedtime Storytime, Something Cool After School, Crafternoon, Librarian in a Box and summer reading programs to encourage literacy.

Twenty-eighth Canadian Bull Congress this weekend By Dan Jensen

The 28th annual Canadian Bull Congress at the Camrose Regional Exhibition is just days away. “We’re expecting another year of pretty good numbers,” said Canadian Bull Congress president Steve Kushnerik. “I haven’t seen the latest numbers, but the trade show part is pretty much full.” The Canadian Bull Congress is one of the mustattend events of the year for those who are looking to buy or sell cattle. “We average around 250 livestock exhibitors and product and service-related businesses,” some of whom come from as far away as Saskatchewan and Manitoba,” said Kushnerik. Move-in Day

The congress will get started on Jan. 22 with a school education program sponsored by Camrose County. “We are going to have more hands-on activities for the kids as we teach them about the different animals on the farm and what it takes to raise an animal safely,” said Kushnerik. “We’re also going to have Fortis do a presentation on farm safety.” Camrose County will present the Canadian Bull Congress sponsors’ and exhibitors’ social from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 23.

The County will also be serving free coffee and squares between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. as a way of welcoming registrants. The show will officially open at 9 a.m. Jan. 24, following a Camrose County sponsored exhibitor’s breakfast. The herd walk, single purebred heifer, and 4-H heifer project competitions will start at 1 p.m. “The competitions are good for breeders because they allow them to show what they have to offer,” said Kushnerik. “If potential buyers see something they like they will be able to hunt up the person who is showing that animal or attend that exhibitor’s private sale. A lot of people go to the farms to look at the different herds after the congress is over.” A new event will include a cattleman’s version of musical chairs, in which congress sponsors will be able to lead an animal and share with the audience information about their business. “It’s a fun little thing that we wanted to do to give the sponsors more recognition for what they do,” said Kushnerik. The steak challenge and taste of beef banquet featuring an auction and entertainment by Herb Dixon will start at 6 p.m. “We’re looking at anoth-

er banquet sell-out,” said Kushnerik. A commercial cattleman’s breakfast sponsored by the City of Camrose on Jan. 25 will kick off a full day of events that includes the 4-H program at 9 a.m., a rancher’s choice single bull Show at 1 p.m., the senior bull and pen of three bull shows at 2 p.m., the presentation of the RBC Marketing Award, and the ever-popular Bull-nanza at 3:30 p.m., which gives ticket buyers the chance to win a bull valued at more than $7,000. “We usually sell out of tickets for that fairly early, so we advise people to get theirs early,” said Kushnerik. Notable by their absence this year will be visitors from the United Kingdom, including Gerry Smyth, who manages a pedigree Angus farm in Ireland, and Freda Kinnarney, who is involved in organizing Ireland’s largest agriculture show in Tullamore. “They have been experiencing issues in Ireland so they will not be coming this year,” said Kushnerik. Clipping and fitting clinic

The Canadian Bull Congress 4-H fitting and clipping clinic was held on Jan. 18. “The idea was to show the 4-H members how to cut the hair on the animals,

wash them and get them ready for their show in the spring,” said Kushnerik. Humble beginnings

The first Canadian Bull Congress was a one-day event set up to focus on the commercial cattlemen. “The visionaries who started this event wanted to give the breed associations and opportunity to show commercial cattlemen the benefits that their breed could bring to the cattleman’s herd,” said Camrose area cattle producer Bob Prestage. “Each of the 14 breeds presented had the opportunity to display the champion animal of the breed and was given 15 minutes to tell the producers about the characteristics of the particular breed. This was not a competitive show but a comparative show.” The first guest speaker was Dr. Temple Grandin, from the University of Illinois, who spoke passionately about cattle handling facilities and how to approach animals and move them in any given situation. In 1988, the Canadian Bull Congress moved to the Camrose Regional Exhibition’s new expanded facilities located on the east side of Camrose. The show was expanded to two days and encompassed not only breed booths, but a commercial trade show area and a private breeder area, allowing private breeders the oppor-

tunity to display their breeding program and make private sales to potential buyers. The third year saw the inclusion of two programs: the Taste of Beef banquet and the All Breed Steak Challenge, both of which encouraged urban and rural visitors to enjoy top quality Alberta beef. Breeds participating in the congress were invited to prepare steaks for the judges and public to taste. The steaks were then judged on taste, tenderness and how well the breed marketed their product. In 1992, the Camrose Bull Congress became the Canadian Bull Congress. With a new name, a fresh image and logo, and an aggressive marketing approach, booth sales soared. “The banquet was renamed the Minister’s Dinner and the Honourable Shirley McLellan, associate minister of Agriculture, actually helped serve the participants and exhibitors,” said Prestage. In 1995, the pen of five commercial heifer show was introduced, allowing commercial producers an opportunity to expose their females to potential buyers. The purebred producers saw the potential of this show and a purebred pen of five heifer class was added as well. Continued on page 13

Judging seminar prepares 4-H youth for every day decisions By Laurel Nadon Special to The Camrose Booster

The Canadian Bull Congress judging seminar will help prepare 4-H members not only for making decisions on comparing animals, but will also train them for many real life situations. The judging seminar is one of the events which will be held at the Canadian Bull Congress in Camrose on January 24 and 25. Over 200 4-H members will take part with over 35 parent volunteers to help handle the animals. There will be clubs participating from across Alberta, and for the first year a club from Saskatchewan will take part as well. “It’s sort of a workshop for kids to learn to compare animals,” said Charlie

Gould, one of the seminar organizers. “We feel it’s an excellent learning thing.” Gould said that while the main goal of the seminar is to prepare the club members to judge livestock, it also helps them decide what they like better and why, which will give them confidence in judging cattle as well as in everyday situations. “It prepares them in real life when they need to go out and make a decision,” Gould said. The participants will be divided into juniors, intermediates and seniors. The juniors, with 90 to 100 participants six to 12-years-old, will start with basic judging, rotating through seven tables where they will learn how to compare and prioritize. They have had guinea

pigs and hedgehogs to compare in the past. “We make it a fun thing,” Gould said. The intermediate members, with 70 participants 12 to 14-years-old, learn to compare similarities of structure in different species of animals and also conduct oral presentations. “We try to prepare them for more than just beef,” Gould said. The seniors, with 60 participants 15 to 20-years-old, will work hands-on with three species of animals. They have had chickens, rabbits and dogs in the past and this year the youth will work with breeding heifers, sheep and dairy cattle. Bailey Dietrich, 16, in his seventh year with the

Hastings Coulee 4-H Club, has taken part in both the junior and intermediate seminars in the past. “It’s really great for someone to go there and get a background on giving reasons,” Dietrich said, explaining that giving reasons is when participants are asked to place a ranking on what they like about an animal and tell the judge why they liked one first, second or third. The seminar is a stepping stone for club members choosing to participate in the Provincial Heifer Show in Olds and the All Breed Show in Bashaw next summer. There are also youth camps at Battle Lake for all ages of 4-H members. Some of the club members may even go on to include judging in their careers.

“All farmers are judges, but not all people are comfortable going in front of a group of people to do it,” Gould said. When the judging seminar was first introduced at the Canadian Bull Congress over 15 years ago, they had 40 participants. That number has now grown to over 200 participants. The seminar started with just the junior component, with the intermediate and senior added in later, and the juniors divided into two groups as its popularity grew. A grooming seminar held this past weekend saw professional groomers give hands-on tips to club members to prepare them for the show ring. The seminar was open to all 4-H members, even those not taking part in the bull congress.

Vikse Family Farm enjoys success at bull congress By Dan Jensen

If they were able to attend just one cattle show all year, Vikse Family Farm proprietors Dave and Tracee Vikse would choose the Canadian Bull Congress. "Tracee and I go to lots of shows but for the Canadian Bull Congress is still our favourite," said Dave. "Showing our cattle to all the commercial operators who are from this area really means a lot. We sell quite a few breeder bulls to purebred operations but ninety per cent of them go to commercial cattlemen who we have been able to meet at the congress." The Vikses feel the quality of cattle shown at the Canadian Bull Congress is as good as the quality at bigger, more high profile events like Farmfair and Agribition. "There are some amazing breeders in this area, some of whom, like Miller Wilson Angus, are very successful at the bigger events," said Dave. Vikse Family Farm has always done very well at Canadian Bull Congress competitions, having shown the single purebred heifer grand champion in 2013 and the Ranchers' Choice (single bull) champion in both 2012 and 2010. The farm also placed first and second respectively in the 2010 People's Choice pen of three bulls and purebred heifers categories, and won pen of three bulls reserve champion honours 2012. In 2011 it had the honour of having a bull chosen in the Bull-nanza draw and received the RBC marketing award. "The competitions are a great way to show what you have to other breeders as well as look for areas in which you can make improvements," said Dave. "Everybody there is looking for that next great bull."

The chances that Vikse Family Farm will shine again at the 2013 congress look promising, based on the results at a show in Lloydminster, where it had the champion bull, and at the Alberta Select Show in Red Deer, where it won the pen of three bulls event. "We always go into the shows with the thought that

we have a good chance of winning," said Dave. "People don't go to these shows just to participate anymore, they go to win." Vikse Family Farm runs approximately 350 purebred angus and charolais cattle, including a former prize-winning bull (purchased with a partner) that sired the supreme

champion at the Agribition. The farm also operates an extensive flushing program which causes the cows to super ovulate and produce up to 12 eggs (instead of just one) which are then taken and transplanted into other females. "Tracee does most of the work with A.I. and is a huge part of our farm," said Dave.

"Thanks to her we have been able to export eggs and semen across Canada and to countries like Denmark and Argentina. Last year she was able to inseminate 225 head." Dave enjoys sharing his passion whenever he has the opportunity, which is why he can often be seen as a judge at shows throughout Alberta and B.C. He also teaches youth how to judge, fit, groom and show cattle. "Working with youth gives me a good feeling," said Dave. "You want to pass on the information you have whenever you have the chance." Dave is currently a member of the Canadian Bull Congress board of directors. "We're exploring a number of new ideas this year, including one that will give the sponsors greater recognition for their support," said Dave. "We are also talking to the people from Ireland and Scotland about them bringing over some embryos that we can put in our cows. I think it would be interesting to see what kind of animals we could produce and then show at future congresses. Dave feels the Canadian Bull Congress youth program holds its own with any program of its kind in Canada. "We are able to teach city and country kids what cattle are all about and show them some of the things that cattle producers have to go through," he said. "There are a lot of rules by which you have to abide." Dave said the one thing he enjoys most about the cattle business is the chance he has had to travel and meet different people who share the same interests as himself and Tracee. "The places that our cattle have taken us have been just incredible. It has been like no other business."

Kodiaks were watchers at AJHL trade deadline By Murray Green

The trade deadline in the Alberta Junior Hockey League on Jan. 10 was a quiet day. “We made our big trade on Nov. 1 and we have been really pleased with the way it has turned out for us,” said Boris Rybalka, Kodiaks coach and general manager. “Ironically, since then we have been hit with the injury bug. We’ve been playing with 17 or 18 guys on most nights with five or six sitting out. “We still haven’t seen our full roster. Some of the best trades are the ones you don’t make. We like our roster and our attitude, so we stood pat. The guys have been playing well. I give the guys credit because they showed us they can do it and we don’t have to change anything.” The Kodiaks are currently riding an 14 game unbeaten in regulation streak. That is one game back of the franchise record of 15 straight in the 200607 season. The streak started on Oct. 29, the game

before the five player trade that brought Braeden Salverda, Spencer Kryczka and Stefan Danielson to the Kodiaks. Camrose has gone 12-0-2 since then. The Kodiaks did have one player over the limit on the roster. “The decision became easy for us. Riley Griffith was injured and he will need a few games of conditioning when he becomes healthy. We sent him to junior B in Leduc, but he is still affiliated with us,” explained Boris. Camrose connection Colorado Avalanche defenceman, and former Camrose Kodiak, Nick Holden and his wife Angie (nee Bergstrom) recently celebrated the birth of their second child (a boy). Nick had to miss the Jan. 11 game to experience the birth. However, Nick’s trip to the delivery room opened the door for former Camrose Kodiak defenceman Karl Stollery to play his first National Hockey League game. Although Karl played

well and made his coach, Patrick Roy, take notice, he was sent down to the Lake Erie farm team to make way for Nick’s return for the next game. “It was great for Karl to place his first NHL game. He played with Lake Erie on Friday, with Colorado on Saturday and then back with Lake Erie on Sunday, so I imagine he was tired,” said Boris. “I texted him saying he owes Nick and Angie a bottle of wine for letting him play his first game.” The Kodiaks’ fans liked the diminutive defenceman because he always worked hard. “He was a local boy that had to put in extra work because he wasn’t a big guy,” said Boris. “He had the desire and work ethic and it paid off with a game in the NHL. No one can take that away from him. Several former players are having success and it makes the organization and coaches proud. I thought he played well and coach Patrick Roy had some good things to say about him.”

The last time Russell deCarle played in Camrose it was in front of a large Big Valley Jamboree crowd. “Camrose and the prairies were always friends of Prairie Oyster and we played in Camrose a lot,” recalled deCarle. “They have supported us and I’m looking forward to sharing some new music with them. I’ve heard incredible things about the Bailey Theatre and I can’t wait to play there. I’m told it is one of the best theatres in the country.” deCarle was a founding member, lead vocalist, bassist, and contributing songwriter to the multi-platinum Juno award winning country roots group Prairie Oyster. Now as a solo artist he has found success with recording Under the Big Big Sky where he penned nine of the 11 songs. “I will be doing a few Oyster tunes, some from the album, and I will share some new material,” said deCarle. He is working on a new release and could give Camrose a sneak preview of a few songs that may appear on it. “It’s easier to tour with a trio rather than a six member band,” he said. At the Bailey Theatre on Friday, Jan. 24, deCarle will be part of a trio with regular accordion player Denis Kelvie and special guest Calvin Vollrath. Calvin is the uncle of Tyler Vollrath of Bawlf, who led the Down Home Christmas concert at the Bailey before the holiday season. “Calvin is joining us and he is one of the finest musicians in Canada; he is an incredible fiddle player. Tyler is a great player as well,” said deCarle. “I’m excited to add Calvin to the show. It will be fantastic to add someone of Calvin’s calibre. It’s exciting for the musicians, as well as for the fans. We’ve never played together, although we have known each other for a long time. It keeps it exciting for us on stage. The audience will pick up on the excitement.” Along with Prairie Oyster, deCarle has won many awards. “I wanted to move on and face new challenges as a solo artist. It gives me a chance to get more intimate with the audience and tell stories of how the songs came about. Before it was the band’s viewpoint that I was expressing. He prefers to get closer to the audience and relate with them his experiences. “I like intimate shows rather than huge crowds. You can really get a nice repore with people that way. I like to tell stories about the music. If people just want to listen to the music they can play the CD at home. I want to share experiences and tell stories and background of where the material comes from. I want to share information that they won’t hear anywhere else. That is fun for me,” he continued. Under the Big Big Sky mixes blues, jazz and, rhythm and blues with a western swing. “We always drew from a lot of different styles in our music,” said deCarle. “I combine blues, country and American roots into my own style.” It’s life from deCarle’s view. “For decades people have been asking for a solo record,” he said. “But I never thought I was ready and the band always satisfied the musical side of my life. Over the years we met a lot of talented people. Going on my own allows me to work with some of those people. It’s a chance for me to do more of what I want to do.” The more he played and wrote, the more he found himself developing his own style, which was just a slight departure from his past. “To me it was a torchy, bluesy record more than anything else. It’s certainly a product of where I came from musically. Growing up when I did, radio wasn’t homogenized. We loved good music and that is I want to share with the audience,” added deCarle. “I take a little of the Beatles, Buck Owens and Frank Sinatra with me as I write.” Although his music defies easy classification, it’s perfectly clear about the fact that deCarle can find inspiration for his songs. “I really feel that I am on the top of my game right now. I’m only coming out west for two shows this weekend, but I plan to tour again later in 2014 after the new album is finished,” said deCarle. Young performer Storbakken joins Bailey Buckaroos By Murray Green

The Storbakken family band has been playing music in the Sedgewick area for many years. Fourth generation member and lead vocalist, 10-year-old Ty Storbakken, will be joining the Bailey Buckaroos for a special show on Sunday, Jan. 26. “We’ve got a really great line up this month for The Bailey Buckaroos,” said show spokesman Curtis Bessette. “One of the main performers will be Ty Storbakken, who belts out the classic country

tunes of Hank Williams like nobody’s business.” Ty, who lives in Camrose, has been singing since he could talk, or remember. “I started singing country because my grandpa is a farmer and likes country music,” reasoned Ty. “My uncle Ryan wanted me to sing a few Christmas songs for grandpa two or three years ago and then I started singing with the band. He (grandpa Ralph) has a band that he plays banjo with and

I sang on three songs on his CD. I have also sang at anniversaries, birthdays and at a lodge. I still get a little nervous, but I’m getting better.” The young vocalist is concentrating on singing on stage, while learning to play instruments in his spare time. “I play the saxophone at school and I then take a break to learn to play guitar,” he said. Ty’s uncle, Hugo Meland, is a friend of Rudy Famulak and he asked him

to listen to his nephew. Rudy loved his voice and asked Ty to sing a few songs with the Buckaroos. Joining another band, such as the Buckaroos, will be a new experience for Ty. “I’m learning seven or eight songs for the show, but I’m not sure that I’ll be singing them all. I will come on stage and sing three or four songs and then come back later to sing another three or four songs,” added Ty. The young singer is

learning songs performed over 150 years ago, as well as Waylon Jennings’ hit “Put Another Log on the Fire” and Hank Williams classics. “Singing is fun and I have a pretty good voice. I was nervous when I started with grandpa and now again with the Buckaroos, but I will get used them. They offer me good advice if I’m not doing something right,” said Ty. “If I do well they support me and say, good job.”

Building permit value was higher in November By Dan Jensen

The City of Camrose issued nine building permits having a combined total value of $1,667,645 in the month of November. The total value of building permits issued by the City of Camrose in November of 2012 was $17,252,780. "This November's building permit value represents a minus $15,585,135, or a 90 per cent decrease over November, 2012," said a report by QMP administrator Jeremy Enarson at the Jan. 6 meeting of Camrose City council. Residential building permits accounted for $919,750 of the month's total value, followed by commercial permits at $717,895 and institutional permits at $30,000. The largest permit was one for $567,895, issued to Canalta Real Estate Services for an A&W addition and renovation project. Institutional permits accounted for $14,650,000 of the total building permit value of $17,252,780 in November, 2012, followed by residential permits at $1,478,500, industrial permits at $594,280 and commercial permits at $530,000. The total value of permits issued during the first 11 months of the year was higher than it was after November of 2012. The total value of $51,607,946 included residential permits in the amount of $26,731,408, institutional permits which had a total value of $14,077,295, commercial permits at $8,093,857 and industrial permits at $2,705,385. The total value of building permits after 11 months of 2012 was $43,089,191, with $16,749,558 coming in residential, $15,812245 coming in institutional, $5,826,097 coming in commercial and $4,701,291 coming in industrial. The number of single family dwelling units and apartment duplex units completed to the end of November was 52 and 64 respectively.

Foreign delegates add colour to bull congress By Laurel Nadon Special to The Camrose Booster

The international aspect of the Canadian Bull Congress has become a trademark of the popular Camrose event, coming Jan. 24 and 25. International delegates from England, Ireland, Scotland and Denmark have been toured through the area during the congress since 2005. The international delegates typically make presentations at the 4-H programs during the congress, speaking with youth about agriculture in their country. They have also gone to schools and spoken to classes studying agriculture in different countries. “The international guests that we bring here, we introduce them to the people who are exhibiting, but we don’t limit people to just the breeders,” said Bob Prestage, a Canadian Bull Congress committee member. “They talk to them (4-H youth) about their country, their environment. They message how they market their livestock, how their government works with them as an industry to promote the beef-cattle business. They talk about customs within their country.” He noted that the conversations between the delegates and the youth also include lifestyle and how they live within their countries, with topics such as how they celebrate Christmas. Prestage said that the process of selecting an international delegate typically begins with the guest showing an interest in coming to Canada, with the commit-

tee then suggesting that they attend the bull congress. At last year’s event, the congress hosted four delegates from Ireland, including the manager of the Tullamore Show which is a broader show for all livestock where there are 650 booths and 1,700 head of livestock annually. Canadian Minister of Agriculture Gerry Ritz and Alberta Minister of Agriculture Verlyn Olson were on hand to tour the exhibits with the delegates. “Here they had an occasion where they could meet with people from different countries right here in Canada,” Prestage said. The funding to bring delegates here is primarily from a program offered by the Canadian Beef Breeds Council, and Prestage noted that there won’t be a delegate at the 2014 congress as the committee was unable

to access enough funds this year. “The funding to assist people to come here is from federal, provincial and bull congress,” Prestage said. “This year the finances just didn’t get put together in a way that made it feasible to invite people.” He noted that there are typically many foreign guests from countries such as the United States and Mexico who attend the event on their own, often coming specifically to find genetics for a particular breed of cattle. While they may not make purchases during the congress, visitors often make important contacts and are later able to purchase embryos, semen or live cattle. Prestage said that the event is an important way for Canadians to market genetics. “It’s called the Canadian Bull Congress for a reason.

We’re promoting Canadian beef cattle genetics,” Prestage said. “We’re not just promoting genetics from around this area. We encourage individual breeders to travel and people who are in the business of exporting genetics.” The Canadian Bull Congress has represented the industry by participating in the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh, Scotland, the Tullamore Show in Ireland, and World Angus Forum in Spruce Meadows. Committee members have participated in outbound missions to England, Scotland, Ireland and the United States, touring farms, markets, cooperatives, parliament and processing plants. The goal of the Canadian Bull Congress is continued participation in both inbound and outbound international marketing opportunities.

The Canadian Bull Congress committee will be having a little bit of fun with its sponsors at the Camrose Regional Exhibition this Friday. "We're going to be playing a game kind of like musical chairs starting at a 3 p.m.," explained Canadian Bull Congress committee member Dave Vikse. "It should be pretty entertaining and good for a few laughs seeing these guys make mistakes." Sponsors will be handed the reins to a bull or a steer they will have the opportunity to parade inside the show ring while music is being played. In order to advance to the next level they must be standing inside a hula hoop while in control of their animal when the music stops playing. "We will be starting the game with 10 sponsors and nine hula hoops," said Vikse. "The sponsor that is not in the hula hoop when the music stops will be eliminated. Every time someone is eliminated we will take another hula hoop from the

official judge in case there are any disputes as to which sponsor gets to the hula hoop first and which one is eliminated." The game will start with each of the committee introducing the sponsors and saying a little bit about how they support the Canadian Bull Congress. "We're going to have Norm Mayer, the mayor of Camrose, Don Gregorwich,

the reeve of Camrose County, Jackie Rae Greening from CFCW, the regional managers from ATB and AFSC and a few others," said Vikse. "From what I can tell they are all pretty eager and excited about participating." The game is one that Vikse came up with on his own as a way of recognizing the sponsors who have been so good to the Canadian Bull Congress through the years. "We are extremely grateful for all the support they have given us," said Vikse. "Without their help the cost of the Canadian Bull Congress would be so high that the producers would never be able to attend or put the cattle together for the commercial guys to see. I know for myself as a producer and the owner of Vikse Family Farm it is hugely important." Announcement

Hockey Vikings tied for second place after grounding Briercrest Clippers The Augustana Vikings grounded the Briercrest Clippers with two straight 7-3 losses in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference action on Jan. 10 and 11 in Saskatchewan. “We got off to a little bit of a slow start, but as the weekend progressed we got better,” said goalie Chase Martin. “It was good to get the two wins. With NAIT and Red Deer splitting two games, it puts it in our hands with two games against SAIT (battle for first place).” Adam Johnson led the Vikings with two goals in the first game. CALC offering courses By Dan Jensen

The Camrose Adult Learning Council is offering a number of courses this winter to help local residents boost their reading, writing and math skills. “We’re encouraging people to register and get going with them,” explained Camrose Adult Learning Council executive director Diane McLaren. “We’ve had good attendance in the past and we hope that continues.” Family Story Writing

An eight-week Family Story Writing course taught by Shirley Lyster starting Jan. 27 is designed to help participants fulfill their New Year’s resolution to get those family stories written, compiled and put into book form. The plan is simple: commit to two pages a week with the group setting adding motivation. “It’s an awesome course if you want to write your autobiography, write about your life, or write your family story,” said McLaren. “The people who are into genealogy will really appreciate it because it is not focused on teaching them to write per se but giving them ideas on how to construct a family story that is interesting using different themes, topics and ways of looking at things. One topic might be career and jobs, so if they are writing their family story or your their own story they might talk about their own career or jobs.” Writing from the Heart

A Writing from the Heart course taught by McLaren starting Feb. 20 will provide the chance for participants to express themselves better verbally and in writing while exploring life and the world from new perspectives. “I have run this course in the past in a variety of different ways,” said McLaren, adding it is based on the Writing Out Loud books by Deborah Morgan. “The last time it was for people who were writing already and were already pretty good grammatically but wanted help in making what they had to say more interesting. This year it is aimed towards people who want to improve their basic grammar and punctuation, or have a hard time tying their paragraphs together. There will be an element every week of learning solid writing construction, after which they will take the writing and look at ways of improving it. They will be able to write about our lives or anything else they find interesting.” Managing My Money

Managing My Money, taught by McLaren starting Jan. 20, is a six week course aimed at helping people improve their personal money management. Topics will include using your money as a tool, tracking your spending, identifying spending leaks, managing temptations, emotional spending, debt reduction, finding ways to save

money, credit and the benefits of registered savings plans. “The thing I like about it is that it is not just a course about budgeting,” said McLaren, who teaches the course at least twice a year. “It really helps people track their spending and see where they are putting their money so that they can make sure they get where they want to go and don’t fritter it away. It is not about me telling them what to do with their money, but is based on the participants’ own values, goals and dreams.” Essential Skills for Work and Life

An Essential Skills for Work and Life course running for seven weeks starting Jan. 22 is aimed at helping participants gain greater understanding of what they read, as well as improve their grammar and spelling. “It is for people who have some reading and writing skills but really want to improve them, either for work or their own satisfaction,” said McLaren. “It could be for someone for whom English is not his or her first language, someone who has had a stroke or an accident who needs to recover the skills he or she once possessed, or someone who just needs to build up skills for advancement in his or her career. They will look at things like how to write a proper business letter or email if they need to get a refund or make a special request, how to fill out a proper form, and even how to calculate the deductions on their pay cheque to ensure they received the right amount. All those things are very important literacy skills for daily living.” GED preparation

GED courses on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting Feb. 11 will provide participants all they need to know to successfully write their high school equivalency exams. “We offer the GED course twice a year, once in the winter/spring and once in the fall,” said McLaren. “The person who teaches it is very proficient and will help participants with any extra things that they need.” The Essential Skills for Work and Life will be accepting applications after the program gets underway. “If people are not here on day one they can still start the course, so if you saw the ad and forgot to call and it started last week you can probably go in,” said McLaren. “The Managing My Money, Family Story Writing and Writing from the Heart courses are a little different because they kind of build on each other, so we encourage people to get in as soon as they can.” Camrose Adult Learning Council’s typical classes involve between six and 12 participants maximum. Arnold Bertram Harold Hagen March 29, 1920 – January 12, 2014 Arnold Bertram Harold Hagen, the first son of Hans and Alma Hagen, was born on the farm in Hagen, Saskatchewan on March 29, 1920. His grandmother acted as the midwife for the delivery. He had two older sisters, Irene and Rose (Ken) Arnstead. Completing the family were two younger brothers, Lloyd (Ida) and Clarence (Ruth), as well as sisters Harriet (Orville) Pederson and Helen (Norman) Salte. As a boy, Arnold combined many farm tasks with his love of sports – especially hockey and baseball. He played for the Hagen hockey and baseball teams. As was common in that time, he quit school after grade nine. In 1942, Arnold was drafted into the army. While in the army, he contracted pneumonia, followed by pleurisy and emphysema, which almost took his life. Due to the time needed for recovery, he was honourably discharged from the army. He enrolled at SLBI, Outlook, completing his high school and Bible school (1943-1946). God’s hand was in this as he met his future wife, Ruth Oine McFarlane while in attendance there. They were married on August 21, 1946 at Ratner, Saskatchewan. To this union were added Ruby (Dennis Knudtson), Daniel (Audrey Friggstad), David (Sheri Gueldenhaar), Joy (Orville Evenson), Crystal (Doug MacKay) and Philip (June Olsen). Sensing a call to the gospel ministry, Arnold and Ruth moved to Saskatoon in 1946 where Arnold completed his Bachelor of Arts (University of Saskatchewan) and Bachelor of Divinity (Luther Seminary) in 1950. Their home in Saskatoon was a granary, renovated by Arnold, and moved from a farm. He obtained his Master of Theology (1976) from the seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota and an honorary Doctorate of Divinity (1986) from Luther Seminary, Saskatoon. Their places of ministry over the years were: Prince Albert (1950-1952), Vancouver (1952-62), Camrose (CLBI president, 1962 -1985) and, after retiring, Kingman/Round Hill (1985-1993). Arnold was active in various positions in the church at large as well as the World Mission Prayer League. In later years, he led Bible studies and Sunday services in Mesa, Arizona. He also led Bible studies at retirement homes in Camrose and provided interm pulpit supply throughout central Alberta. Arnold was noted for his great ability to memorize, committing to memory many books of the Bible. He loved to sing and play his violin, as well as engaging in farming with his son David for 30 years. However, his first love was sharing the gospel through teaching and preaching. He was a loving father and husband whose family meant the world to him. During his last years, he suffered from cancer with it gradually consuming his body. In looking to the future, he was excited to reach his heavenly home. Quoting from the Apostle Paul, “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:21) Also from Psalm 116:15, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” He leaves behind his wife Ruth; his six children and their spouses; 21 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren with two more expected in March. A Funeral Service was held ar 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 17, 2014 from Messiah Lutheran Church with Pastors Harold Rust and Rob Lewis officiating. Interment has taken place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. Marvin Boettger Marvin Boettger was born on the family farm near Tofield, AB on July 7, 1922; he passed away in Tofield, AB on January 16, 2014 at the age of 91 years. Mary Ann Blatz Mary, daughter of Herman and Margaret Blatz was born in Macklin, SK on March 21, 1927. She married Wendelin Blatz on June 28, 1949 and together they were blessed with nine children, five boys and four girls. Angels guided her to her heavenly home on January 10, 2014. Toyota Tundra Taking a back seat to no one

When it comes to performance and capability, the 2014 Toyota Tundra at Toyota City, Wetaskiwin, takes a back seat to no one. Tundra boasts big powerful brakes, two available engines, an advanced transmission, and a proven towing capacity of up to 4,762 kg. The 4.6 litre i-Ford V8 generates 310 horsepower and 327 lb.-ft. of torque while making the most of every drop of fuel. Tundra’s 5.7 litre i-Force V8 features the largest displacement of any engine in Toyota’s history. The 32-valve DOHC powerplant generates an impressive 381 horsepower and 401 lb.-ft. of torque. Advanced technologies include dual variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) and sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection. Both workhorse engines are governed by a 6-speed automatic super ECT transmission that provides effortless shifting, even on uphill grades. Both engines also feature a standard transmission cooler system, as well as a standard transmission oil temperature gauge.

Its double wishbone suspension system with coil springs, gas shocks and stabilizer bar up front, and heavy duty multi-leaf springs and bias mounted gas shocks in the rear ensure it. If you like to venture off the beaten track, available TRD offroad packages (4x4 Double Cab SR 4.6 litre or 5.7 litre and 4x4 CrewMax SR5 5.7 litre models) offer Bilstein shock absorbers that automatically alter damping based on speed and terrain for better tiresurface contact, increased cornering stability, and superior tracking. With big power comes big responsibility. That’s why Tundra is equipped with enormous 13.9” front brake rotors and class-first fourpiston calipers. Particularly when you’re towing, Tundra’s big rotors can help to provide the confidence that when you apply the brakes, the Tundra – and your trailer – will come safely to a stop. With Tundra, you don’t need to sweat the big stuff. With a maximum payload of 859kg (1,895 lbs.) and a towing capacity of 4,762 kg (4x2 Regular Cab long box), it’s safe to assume that, if the 2014 Tundra can’t move it, it wasn’t meant to be moved.

Finally, the Platinum grade was luxuriously designed to indulge personal truck users, with perforated black diamondstitched leather seating, door and instrument panel inserts, and brushed aluminum accents that offer an upscale urban feel. The all-new westernthemed 1794 Edition pays homage to the Texas ranch, founded in the year 1794, where the Tundra plant is

The Our Lady of Mount Pleasant School Royals girls’ basketball team placed third at its first high school tournament on Jan. 10 and 11. In the tournament final, the New Norway Spartans battled the Fairview Cobras with a close match until the last four minutes. New Norway poured on the offence to win 62-45 in the final. A close game also occurred in the contest for third place. Regulation time didn’t determine a winner, so it was a winner take all five minute overtime period. OLMP defeated the Camrose Composite High School Trojans junior varsity squad 50-46 in an intense and hard fought battle. J. R. Robson of Vegreville beat the Lacombe Rams 54-35 in the consolation match. The OLMP players welcomed a home tournament. “Everyone was excited to have a home tournament, more so for the other players than me because I’m new here. It’s awesome that parents, friends and the school students are able to come out and watch us. The coaches also wanted to get more players into the game to gain valuable experience,” said Laura Singer, a Grade 10 player on the Royals. “We will have a lot more experience by the time most of the players reach Grade 12. Although the first game was easier, we expected some tough competition.” The OLMP squad has waited for success for some time. “The OLMP Royals have had a fantastic start to their season. Last year, we won one game all season, and so far this season we have won the consolation final at the tournament in Fort Saskatchewan and won third place at our OLMP tournament with a season record of

4-3 to start,” explained coach Jaymie Reinhart. “The girls have improved immensely, only practicing since the start of December and having a team comprised primarily of Grade 10 students.” The thought of hosting a tournament proved motivation for the Royals. “The girls played phenomenal against Erminskin on Friday, limiting them to one basket in all of the second half of the game,” said Jamie. “We faced a tough competitor on Saturday morning, against New Norway who is ranked fifth in the province for 1A schools. Our team played hard in the first half against a team who is quick, tall and strong. In our game against Camrose Composite JV, both sides fought hard from the start of the game. Our OLMP girls adjusted to their defense well, and in the second half played a strong offensive game. Candice Chartrand was a tough defender up top, creating turnovers with her quick hands and feet. Brooke Cunningham and Laura Singer made a great team scoring a combined total of 42 out of 50 points. The girls made OLMP’s first senior high basketball tournament a success. We are looking forward to more success and growth as the season progresses.” A tournament was scheduled when the excitement for basketball increased last November. “This year we had a lot more people tryout. I think its good for the team. When the Grade 12’s graduate this year, we will have strong players coming up. Our strength of the team is that we bonded really well and everyone knows what the other player is going to do on the court,” said Laura. “We are getting better with each game.”

The game winner was set up by a good first pass by defenceman Quinn Brown. “Coach (Boris Rybalka) always tells us that defence wins championships, so we always want to keep the score within reach and score on our opportunities,” said Quinn. “We have the goalies to do it. Devin (McDonald) has been playing well and Matt (Zentner), we kind of hung out to dry against Bonnyville, but he played well for us. We are strong defensively, so we want to keep it low scoring.” Brett Njaa started the scoring in the first frame, but the Wolverines responded less than two minutes later. The teams were content to play close checking playoff-style hockey the rest of the way. Quinn, from Lacombe, prides himself on his work in his own end. “Defence comes from for me and I like to think that I can move the puck up to the forwards and play a good transition game,” he said. “I try to contribute offensively when I can.” Goalie Devin McDonald stopped 32 of 33 shots directed his way. Camrose Adult Learning Council is accepting nominations for its 2014 Literacy Award. “We have nomination forms available on our website (www.camroselearning. com),” said Camrose Adult Learning Council executive director Diane McLaren. The Camrose Adult Learning Council has established the Literacy Award to remind the community of the importance of literacy and lifelong learning and to acknowledge those members of the community who make an outstanding contribution to the expansion of possibilities for literacy and learning in Camrose. Nominees can be facilitators, instructors, tutors, program designers, or anyone else who has in some way made a significant contribution to encouraging literacy and life-long learning. “They can be nominated for a variety of reasons,” said McLaren. “Last year’s recipient was David Andreassen, a teacher at Camrose Composite High School, was nominated because of his innovative and engaging approach to encouraging reading and a love of literature in his English classes. When we recognized Fowler we had it at the University because that is where the Reading University is held each summer.”
