Do you get frustrated when your lawnmower will not start or when the skies open with drenching rain on the day you had planned to mow your lawn? Do you feel overwhelmed with keeping your small front and backyard in the City looking great? Or get weary from picking up the litter strewn about by irresponsible and inconsiderate people? How frequently do you have to dispose of branches or fallen trees following heavy winds from one of our frequent summer storms? Now imagine all of these typical homeowner obligations on a much more grandiose scale. Welcome to the role of City of Camrose Parks Director Chris Clarkson and his small crew of 10 year-round employees and 37 seasonal staff. Twenty of the casual staff members are new to the department this year meaning that each of these employees had to undergo two intense weeks of training. Thorough training is mandated in order to meet health and safety standards and to allow cross-training on the City’s line-up of parks maintenance equipment (eight ride-on, tri-deck and rough-cut mowers plus many gas trimmers, saws, etc.). Each is used to keep the City looking as neat and green as possible. Mowing and sweeping 600 acres of City parks, boulevards, hillsides, berms and other greenspaces weekly, plus irrigating Kin Park and Rudy Swanson sports facilities, is a serious responsibility for the summer crew of 20. Most are students, almost all of whom return to class at the end of August. It also comes at a significant cost to taxpayers – this year the City’s operating budget for the Parks Department is pegged at over $1.6 million. Reversal of the City’s Camrose Drive Naturalization Program (due to intense public pressure) will also impact the workload and cost for the City Parks Department with an additional 24 acres of mowing and trimming each week of the growing season.

BRCF Ritter grant assists St. Mary’s Hospital chapel The Battle River Community Foundation awarded a grant to St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose Foundation to assist the chapel. The grant income is from the Ritter (Rev Walt, Doris and Libby) Family Chapel Fund. The fund was created to support services and supplies at the Chapel of St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose. The Battle River Com-

munity Foundation exists to support projects, such as this, in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endow-

ment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $4,470,000 to support community facilities and programs such as those at St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The City of Camrose has seen a recent increase in the number of large (value) developments including a recent application by Fieldstone Development for a four-storey building on 54 Street. The above rendering illustrates Fieldstone’s vision for the development and is for information purposes only.

Camrose experiencing an increase in developments By Lori Larsen

As you drive around Camrose you may be noticing a lot of turf being turned and machinery busy digging, clearing and ultimately preparing ground for new developments. According to City of Camrose planning and development director Aaron Leckie, the City is experiencing an increase in development. “We have had a very busy spring in terms of development. “We’ve received applications for projects that have either recently been approved within the last couple of months or are in progress right now, totalling close to $27 million, and we know these projects are a go.” Leckie added that this total includes only the major projects. With the smaller permits considered, that total would be closer to $30 million. Some of the projects include, in estimated construction costs: • The town square (51 Street) residential and commercial development valued at $4.4 million. • The new EMCO building, formerly located on 44th Avenue, is rebuild-

ing half a block away valued at $1.4 million. • Resurrection Lutheran Church located across the street from Jack Stuart School on the south end of Parkview Drive, valued at 1.8 million. • Windsor Plywood, located on 44th Avenue in the Industrial Park, which includes a new building already under construction, valued at $1.45 million. Leckie added, “We (City) just received an application last week from Fieldstone Developments (to develop the proposed four-storey building) on the north side of Mirror Lake on 54th Street valued at $5.9 million.” The largest development (value) is the new St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, located on the south end of 50 Street (east side of the road), valued at $12 million. “We also have a couple of major subdivisions including Southwest Meadows Phase 5 (the final phase) just south of the Duggan fields and Ironwood on 50th Street just south of the train underpass,” he said. “This is a surprisingly busy spring for us and if I

were to speculate on reasons why it would be that construction contracts are still relatively inexpensive because there are a lot of people looking for work and some developers and builders are trying to time the next boom. This would be the time to lock in those contracts for construction work.” Leckie added that behind this sudden increase, there may be a certain level of optimism about where the economy is heading. What this means for Camrose is an economic boost as a result of more work, construction costs for supplies and equipment, the possibility of attracting more residents and visitors to Camrose and the revenue from tax dollars on developed properties. With the exception of religious institutions which are exempt from municipal taxes, all of these new developments will feed directly into the City coffers through municipal taxes, keeping in mind, the costs the City bears to develop and maintain roads, crosswalks and other City amenities.

Senior healthy life By Lori Larsen

Providing vital information on healthy living for women and men over 55 is the mandate behind the 2017 Seniors’ Symposium to be held at the Camrose Recreation Centre on Thursday, June 8 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. “The City of Camrose is once again excited to partner with the tenants of the Camrose Recreation Centre, Camrose Primary Care Network, Alberta Health Healthy Living Centre, the University of Alberta Augustana Fitness Centre and Flo’s Concession to host the annual Seniors’ Symposium,” said City of Camrose community services manager Ryan Poole. The event begins at 8 a.m. with a continental breakfast served on the second floor concourse until 8:30 a.m., followed by a facility tour and three morning sessions.

From 8:45 until 9:30 a.m. sessions include: Low Impact Fitness, Osteoporosis 101 and Falling is a Yearround “Reason” to See Your Doctor. From 9:45 until 10:30 a.m. are sessions: Benefits of Water Exercise, Introduction to the Fitness Centre and Equipment, Introduction to Nordic Poling and Over-theCounter Medications. From 10:45 until 11:30 a.m. are sessions: Water Therapy, Navigating Grief for Health and Wellness, Life’s Balancing Act–Identifying and Managing Stress and Are You Drinking Enough Fluids? Lunch follows from 11:45 a.m. until 1 p.m. and will be provided. “This excites me as a recreation provider in Camrose as it not only helps educate local seniors on healthy living choices, but it also educates the public on the great resources we have for seniors in the Camrose Recreation Centre,” remarked Poole. “It truly is a one-stop shop for seniors regarding health and wellness.” After the morning sessions and lunch, participants are encouraged to check out additional information available throughout the Recreation Centre concourse provided by each of the four partners. Register by filling out a form available at any of the participating partners then drop it off at the Camrose Recreation Centre administration office. Registration closes on Thursday, June 1.

Camrose’s parks and trail systems By Lori Larsen With June being Recreation and Parks Month, people are encouraged to get out and take advantage of the many wonderful parks, trails and greenspaces throughout Camrose and area that allow them to enjoy the outdoors and get in touch with nature. In Camrose alone, there are approximately 11 kilometers of paved multi-use trails around Mirror Lake and in Jubilee and Stoney Creek Parks with another approximately 25 kilometers of trails throughout the city connecting various residential and commercial locations. In order to ensure Camrose parks and trails remain pristine and are available in the years to come for all residents, users are asked to use proper trail etiquette. Share the trails with all users by staying to the

right of the centre (including users with pets on leashes) and if using a bicycle do so in single file except when passing. Keep pathways clear and if you need to stop, do so by moving completely off the trail. Benches are provided. Be extra cautious at intersections. Slow down and look both ways and behind yourself before crossing a road or trail intersection. Be seen and heard. If using the trail systems during the darker hours make sure you are visible with light-coloured clothing and reflective material. Equip bicycles with reflectors, bells and lights. When cycling and attempting to pass another trail user be sure to give proper warning and do so in a safe and respectful manner, do not alarm. Do not pass on the right.

When using the trail systems, be alert to any hazardous conditions or vandalism and report it to the City of Camrose. Also be aware of City maintenance vehicles. Keep trails and parks clean by using the garbage receptacles provided throughout the park system. When walking pets, ensure you have the means to pick up after them. Bags are provided throughout the trail system. Washrooms are located throughout the trail system for users convenience. It is important to assist in keeping these facilities clean as well. For more information on the City of Camrose parks and trails systems including specific location and points of interest, visit www.camrose.ca/trails.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The City of Camrose has an abundance of greenspaces, parks and playgrounds for children of all ages to enjoy. The climbing net at Jubilee Park had three-year-old Audrey (top) and her two-year-old sister Rayna Green (bottom) climbing and spinning while mom Kristen held onto sevenweek-old Mikayle.

The Camrose Genealogy Society is holding a free workshop on Saturday, June 3 at the Camrose Public Library from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. and invites anyone interested in learning more about genealogy and researching family history to come and join. Presenter John Althouse is a former Albertan teacher who now travels across Alberta and beyond, helping people to understand the art of research in various areas of genealogy. Althouse has developed and introduced children and youth family history programs for the Alberta Genealogical Society. Althouse hopes to empower people who have a similar interest to develop their knowledge and skills, eventually hoping they will share with others. During the workshop, Althouse will be presenting the following topics.

The first topic will be introducing genealogy and family history to children and youth in classrooms and other group settings and principles, activities and other ideas. The second topic of discussion will include What They Don’t Tell You on ancestry.com and Who Do You Think You Are? Participants of the workshop are asked to bring a bagged lunch and beverages for themselves. REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson ”Wake up! Look at that old man!”

‘Tis the season of graduations and convocations, and I’m flashing back to one of my favourite convocation ceremony moments. ***

In 1967, during Canada’s Centennial year, individuals and communities were encouraged to take on a “Centennial Project.” My parents decided their personal centennial project would be to start taking university courses. My dad said, “We’ve put the kids through university; now it’s our turn.” He and mom signed up for a first-year sociology course at Camrose Lutheran College (now Augustana Campus of University of Alberta), which at that time offered the first two years of university courses (now it’s a degree granting campus). My parents had no expectations that the course would have any practical value; just that it might be interesting. They enjoyed the course more than they’d anticipated, and discovered (to their surprise) it actually had some practical value too.

Letters to the Editor Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Excellent turnout

I couldn’t believe the

number of folks who showed up last night (May 23) for our Community Band Concert. We, of course, held our final concert of the season outside in the wonderful fresh air and grand aroma of spring, in Camrose. We were located in a terrific setting near the Bill Fowler Centre. The crowd we played to has to be credited mostly to that fabulous photo you took for the front page of The Camrose Booster. Thank you again. I was also complimented on the

tag line article, but I said that thanks were due to your team for this as well. Super job! We would be thrilled to count on you again to help promote our band activities. All in all–our best showing in a while, thanks to The Booster’s support of community events! We are deeply appreciative of your support. Ray Hook, president, Camrose and District Community Band

***

For the next few years, they continued to take one course a year. After a few years, mom dropped out of the “Way Past Centennial” project but dad continued. At some point, dad decided that he’d like to get a degree. When he ran out of courses available in Camrose, he began taking one course a year at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He enjoyed the courses and also enjoyed being “the old coot” amongst students in their twenties. He was of course older than most of the professors. He considered his age and experience to be an advantage. As he said about his “History of Alberta” course, “I should do well in this course; I remember most of it.” ***

In 1982, he graduated with a B.A., having taken one course a year for fifteen years. I knew he was excited one day when the doorbell rang at my home. It was dad standing on the front landing, wearing his convocation cap and gown. Later that morning, he wore his convocation cap and gown when he met “The Senate,” the cronies he met for coffee every morning. Some university graduates are not enthused about convocation ceremonies and would prefer to skip the whole thing. In contrast, our dad signed up for the tea, the convocation ceremonies, the banquet–he relished every activity associated with convocation. ***

University of Alberta convocation ceremonies take place in the Jubilee Auditorium. With thousands of students graduating every year, there is bit of a “crank ’em through” feeling. After some speeches, literally hundreds of students parade across the stage for their 30 seconds of official handshake and certificate. With so many grads, the audience is limited to just a few individuals per graduate. At first, people clap politely for each grad. After a while that stops. You can tell where in the auditorium a student’s family is sitting by where the handful of clapping comes from when their name is announced. ***

Our few family members were sitting deep in the second balcony. It was a very long time before we could see our greyhaired dad in the line-up of graduates inching their way up the stairs and across the stage. At least one of us fell asleep. But then we saw him. One row ahead of us and three seats down, we saw a woman elbow the man beside her. She said, “Wake up! Look at that old man! Clap!” We were laughing by the time they announced our dad’s name and–to our delight–people clapped all over the auditorium. ***

Postscript: One year later, my son graduated from University of Alberta. He didn’t want to go to convocation but, as a courtesy, he humoured his mother. My mom and dad were there too. During the banquet speeches, the university president referred to “the old man who convocated last year after taking one course a year for fifteen years.” It was a treat that both my dad and my son got to hear that comment. ***

Revolutionary zero-step entrances …Just one of the numerous remarkable design g features in our compelling p g new

Ironwood Estates, the latest master-planned adult-living community offered by noted Camrose homebuilder and developer, Ipec Property Developments Inc., is officially underway. Company founder and president Dean Huolt announced last week that subsurface and surface work had begun on the 29-home development located in a prized location on the southern edge of Camrose. Ironwood Estates is an exclusive and private, yet very affordable, signature community comprised of single-storey Dean Huolt homes for active adults.

Grand views from each property are a huge asset to the development, along with direct access to the City of Camrose’s best trails, parks and paths. Located just south of the University of Alberta Augustana Campus on 50th Street (directly south of the underpass), Ironwood Estates is situated within minutes of walking to, or driving to, recreation, entertainment, health care, shopping and dining opportunities of note in the City of Camrose. The natural beauty of Stoney Creek Park is directly opposite the front entrance of this remarkably-designed development. Huolt explains his vision for Ironwood Estates: “Though we have put together many of this City’s best developments over the years, we really wanted to raise the bar for this project. My design team, along with my wife Lori, and I, have spent many hours over the past eighteen months analyzing the needs and expectations of individuals and couples who are around age 50 or better. Our target market for this project is people who want to live life to the fullest. We will attract people looking for high quality, high efficiency and optimum security – yet in a very handy location.” Ironwood Estates features three distinct floorplans. Home size ranges include 1,096, 1,286 and 1,456 square feet. Depending on your lifestyle, each home can be offered with or without a basement. “All of our models have an incredible array of standard features, the likes of: 97.1 percent efficiency AFVU furnace/gas water heater, LED lighting package, nine-foot exterior and interior walls, large walk-in

closets, very elegant bathrooms and kitchens and wide entrance and interior doors,” notes Dean. “We also offer a wide selection of optional features for added enjoyment and owner pride.”

One of the most intriguing aspects of each of the floorplans is the zero-step entries at each of the exterior doors and no stairs or landing from the garage to the interior of the home. “This is going to be a huge selling feature for us,” says Huolt with passion for the project evident in his voice. Ironwood Estates is all about independent adult living as never before available in this community. This private development will have no condo fees or on-going community living charges whatsoever. If you drive by the site now, you will see the ground work is well underway. Basements will be visible in the next six to eight weeks. However, interest is already considerable with three homes already sold, one lot/home pending and an additional lot on hold for a client. The solid reputation of IPEC, knowing the quality that is offered and the on-time performance of this respected builder, means a quick sell-out of this newest Camrose property development.

Operation Sandbox puts sand between childrens’ toes By Lori Larsen

Knowing any child can have an opportunity to squish smooth sand between their toes, dig holes for burying treasures or build sandcastles for imaginary princesses and princes is one of the main reasons Robyn and Shane Smith, owners of FT Aggregates in Camrose, once again are running Operation Sandbox. “Sandboxes over X-boxes,” said Shane. “Anything we can do to keep children outside.” Operation Sandbox is an initiative started by the folks at FT Aggregates in 2015 and involves the business employees and their families constructing sandboxes and offering them for free to families with children in need of a little extra kindness. Operation Sandbox first began in 2015 and since its inception has given away over 125 sandboxes as well as sand and toys to children. “Along with our sponsors (local businesses) we have donated in items and services over $14,000,”

said FT Aggregates employee Kailey Korney. “We get our lumber donated by local businesses then our company staff and families build them.” The construction of a sandbox takes approximately 15 minutes, time well spent by the dedicated group at FT Aggregates. “It is the morale we have around here,” said Korney. Anyone interested in obtaining a sandbox can do so by visiting FT Aggregates during business hours Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. “In the past we had certain give-away dates and they would be delivered for people who could not pick them up. But this year we are not having specific give-away dates basically people can come pick them up whenever they are able.” Korney suggested bringing a vehicle capable of holding the sandbox and a half yard of sand to fill it and the staff at

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster FT Aggregates employee Kailey Korney, back, hands toys to three-year-old Lillien Vigneron, front, one of the first recipients back in 2015 of a free sandbox constructed by FT Aggregates employees and families during the Operation Sandbox initiative. The sandboxes (along with other items such as toys) are made possible through the generous donations of local businesses in Camrose.

FT Aggregates will load it into the vehicle. “We can include some toys and glow stones, cool little things for children to take home and play with.” Since about the beginning of May, after Korney posted on the Facebook page about the free sandboxes, the company has given out 25. “The idea has just exploded, this is our third year doing it and it seems so many people have heard about it. There are days we give away up to four in one day.” The sandboxes are made ahead of time and stockpiled and any cash donations received are used to either purchase more lumber, sand toys, other toys, hats, sunscreen or even bubble bath for the aftermath of sandbox fun. “It is pretty easy for people to come here and leave with one right away. If you need one, you want one, then you get one. For more information on Operation Sandbox and a complete listing of sponsors visit ftaggregates. com/operation-sandbox/.

IN CHARACTER

Submitted Christie Mason plays the part of Mary Irene Parlby (nee Marryat) and she was so convincing that the community of Alix adopted her to portray her on important occasions. The costume and character sessions are to peak interest in history. They are hoping to not only encourage people to dress up as past Canadian characters, but also to represent the vast number of nationalities that make up this country.

Step into history through costumes By Murray Green

The Camrose and District Centennial Museum staff are looking for volunteers who like to dress up in costumes and play the role of an important person in history to coincide with the Canada 150 theme. “We want to hold some character-building workshops so people can be historical characters. It would be fantastic to invite people to be in costume for the Canada Day celebration, as well as encourage communityminded people to volunteer at the museum,” said Christie Mason, a third-year student at the University of Alberta Augustana and Lougheed leadership program intern. “We want to bring history alive for people who are visiting. It is also for their own personal enjoyment,” Christie added. “I have been dressing up as Irene Parlby for a number of years now. I went to a Boomtown Trail session and that is how I was inspired to bring history alive.” Mary Irene Parlby (nee Marryat) was a Canadian women’s farm leader, activist and politician. In 1913, Parlby helped to found the first women’s local of the United Farmers of Alberta. In 1921, she was elected to the Alberta Legislature for the riding of Lacombe, holding the riding for 14 years. Appointed as minister without portfolio, she was the first woman cabinet minister in Alberta. “Parlby (Christie) will unveil a mural in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday.” Parlby was one of the Valiant Five, who by means of a court battle known as the Persons’ Case, established that women were qualified Persons in the meaning of the Constitution of Canada and therefore entitled to sit in the Senate of Canada. Costume-making and role-playing sessions will be held on June 10 and 24. People are encouraged to attend both sessions. “The sessions will be part one and two, so we can get a little bit deeper into characters. People can make up their own character, or represent someone from our past. You can play the role of a family member who has been part of the neighbourhood in the past. This is going to be fun and it is for all ages,” added Christie. For more information on the sessions, contact the Camrose and District Centennial Museum.

By Murray Green

The Bailey Theatre and The Canada 150 Series presents Ten Strings and a Goat Skin on Wednesday, June 21 at 8 p.m. This Prince Edward Island trio is known on two continents for its cont empora r y /t rad it iona l Celtic music. Anchored in tradition, the group plays and sings Irish, Acadian, French and original creations infused with modern and world rhythms. With humour and ceaseless energy, Jessie Perlard, Rowen and Caleb Gallant showcase their powerful ties to the many styles of music of PEI. Their lyrics illustrate a deep connection to the history of Eastern Canada (Calidonia). You won’t want to miss their electrifying instrumentals and strong vocal harmonies. Ten Strings and a Goat Skin perform in both English and French combining guitar, violin and bodhran (Irish drum) and you have just what the trio promises. On March 6, Dr. Sheree Kwong See, the Seniors Advocate of Alberta, visited Camrose to make a presentation about the role of her office and to meet with seniors in our community. There were many community members as well as stakeholder organizations present and, after a thorough and thoughtful presentation, Dr. See took the time to answer every question posed to her – with the commitment to follow up on many of them (and she did!). Camrose Seniors Coalition was responsible for the organization of this informative and interactive event and felt it was an overwhelming success. For those who were not able to attend, the following is a summary of the scope of Dr. See’s office (as available on the https://seniorsadvocateab.ca/ website). The Alberta Seniors Advocate is appointed and operates under the authority of a ministerial order. The order outlines a

number of functions of the Office of the Seniors Advocate. In summary, the functions of the Alberta Office of the Seniors Advocate are to: provide resolution support to senior Albertans and their families. We do this by providing information and linking you to government and/ or community programs and services; take note of what we are hearing from individuals. We analyze trends and identify systemic issues. We also actively seek feedback from seniors groups on issues of importance; provide policy advice and make recommendations to the Government of Alberta to improve seniors services and programs. Dr. See is considered a Canadian expert on the psychology of aging. She is currently a tenured Professor of Psychology at the University of Alberta. She has conducted substantial research on cognitive aging, age stereotyping and ageism. She is also an award-winning instructor. In her teaching and research, Dr. See has been a passionate

advocate for aging issues for over 20 years. She has been seconded by the Government of Alberta to serve as the Seniors Advocate from September 2016 to December 2019. When you contact the office, you will be linked with a Seniors Advocate Representative (Carolina, Leslie or Marj) who is knowledgeable about seniors programs and services. This person will listen and work with you to help resolve your problem. We follow up with you if we refer you to another office or program. We ensure you receive the help you need. We ask for information about you only with your consent. The office of the Seniors Advocate is in Edmonton. However, we can work with organizations across Alberta to ensure you get the support you need in your community. One hundred years of memories

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Mayor Norm Mayer offers Florence Sherbin congratulations and a certificate commemorating her 100th birthday on May 16. By Lori Larsen

Rosealta Lodge resident Florence Sherbin turned 100 years young on May 16 and she can still recollect fond memories of simpler days of farming. Florence and her husband moved from the Cold Lake/Bonnyville region to the Camrose area to a farm just east of the city. “I liked everything about farming,” said Florence. “I used to talk to the cattle and they seemed to talk back to me. During calving season, we would have to teach the little calves how to drink. “We (Florence and her husband who passed away in 1978) moved into Camrose in 1972 from the farm into an apartment. I liked to be outside, so I looked after the yard, like a caretaker. I took care of the halls (inside) and did the

mowing and what have you outside.” Speaking of the changes that Florence has seen in the world over her 100 years, she noted with awe the difference between farming today and that which her and her husband did 40-plus years ago. “There has been so much change in the last few years and sometimes it is hard to realize how things do change and you don’t notice it at the time. “The one thing I have noticed though, is the farmers and that they are farming with such big machinery, it’s scary,” she said with a degree of concern. “And they pull everything right behind the tractors.” Florence also commented on the amount of land farmers have today compared to the relatively

small farm she and her husband worked. “When we were farming, it was just with a small tractor and we pulled one piece of machinery at a time.” But like anything else, Florence added, you just did it. “That is what you had to have and that is how we got it done.” Today, Florence enjoys participating in some of the many activities offered at Rosealta that keep her busy and active along with visiting with some longtime friends and new friends that she has met there. “I like to see the old friends that we used to know. When you haven’t seen them for a long time, they change,” she said, fondly remembering friends she met over the years, some from Stoney Creek where she lived prior to Rosealta. She also recalled days when she used to walk downtown and just look around the shops, but said now she wouldn’t chance walking alone. “When I lived at Stoney Creek, I would walk over to the other place (Bethany), but I was scared to go across the roadway because there are so many cars and they came so fast,” a change that Florence has no doubt experienced over her lifetime. In speaking with Florence, it was hard to imagine she was celebrating her 100th birthday. Her wit is sharp and her smile is youthful. When asked what her secret to a long, happy life was, her answer was spot on. “I haven’t really tried, I just keep going and just enjoy. That is about it.” And her final piece of wisdom: “Just do what you can do.”

Talk to us today about the benefits of pre-planning funeral arrangements The idea of advance funeral planning is one which many people would rather not think about. However, planning your own funeral is one of the kindest things you can do for your loved ones. At a time of grief, your family members will be spared the stress of making important, emotionally draining decisions. Pre-planning also ensures your final arrangements will be carried out according to your exact wishes, in a cost-sensitive manner. Call us today for more information about advance funeral planning or to arrange a no-obligation consultation with one of our directors.

Fly-In breakfast celebrates 60 years of welcoming pilots

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The 60th annual Fly-In Breakfast held at the Camrose Airport hosted 117 aircraft and served 1,200 attendees breakfast. Photos clockwise from top left. Three-year-old Silas Woodrow celebrated his birthday in style checking out all the shiny winged machines captivated by his own reflection in the wheel pant cover of this little plane. During the peak fly-in times there were six planes in a circuit being carefully guided to the runway. Some helicopters also made an appearance demonstrating precision landing. The quad drivers responsible for taxiing in and parking aircraft had to be on their toes. Planes glided in with grace and ease. A highlight of the event was the breakfast. Karen Good, left and Tracy Trathen, centre of Cooking Lake get served up by Robert Gaffney. Once landed planes were parked and breakfast enjoyed. Scott Holmes of Edmonton flew in his red Formula One racing plane.

WHO can

Bat homes By Lori Larsen

Bats – some fear them and some revere them. They are the flying night mammal. Like anything else, the more we know about something, the better off we are, and the bat is certainly no exception. Join the Camrose Wildlife and Greenspace Stewardship Society (CWSS) and CWSS steward Carson Hvenegaard at 7 p.m. on June 1 to learn more about the little brown bat – a species of mouse-eared bats (genus Myotis), one of North America’s most common bats and the dangers it is facing. As an extra bonus, attendees will be given an opportunity to build a bat house. Bring your own hammer and assist in protecting the species by providing a place for them to roost this summer. Everyone is welcome, however CCWS asks if you are thinking of attending, please let them know. Anyone attending an event will have an opportunity to put their name into a draw for prizes donated by the community. The draws will be done during the last event held on August 3. The more events you attend the more times your name goes into the draw. For more information on the June 1 event or to acknowledge you will be in attendance, contact Carson Hvenegaard by emailing carsonhv@gmail.com or by telephone at 780-672-0544. For more information on CWSS, visit the City of Camrose website at www.camrose. ca/168/Wildlife-GreenspaceStewardship. Remember, one little brown bat can consume up to 1,000 mosquitoes in a single hour.

Making life changing choices

Long weekends, Canada Day or year-round,

our high-quality

flags fly longer!

By Lori Larsen Choosing a lifestyle that includes giving back in so many ways was one of the main reasons Colleen and Brian Nelson opted to install a 40 panel solar array on their farm, just east of Camrose. The four generation farm hosted a variety of operations over the years, including grain, hay and cattle. Now that Colleen (former school principal) and Brian are officially retired the farmland is leased out and they spend their time enjoying all that life has to offer and giving back to community and those in need.

Colleen and Brian at being prudent and ambassadors of the earth. A tour of their property and home speaks volumes on the contributions the couple have made to sustainability and appreciating the value of simpler living. “The house (originally Brian’s grandparents) was basically about half the size and we added on with all recycled material.” The lumber came from old grain elevators that were torn down, the windows were ones that were mis-measured from someone else’s build, light and bathroom fixtures were all

dance of saskatoon and other berry bushes, apple and plum trees of which Brian produces some amazing jelly and wine, which they also give away as gifts and the giving goes far beyond what they make or produce. “Retirement is a wonderful time we both have time to give to the community more,” remarked Colleen. “We are both involved with organizations in Camrose as well as our church (Camrose United).” Colleen volunteers her time on the Bailey board and at St. Marys Hospital and sews quilts for Camrose Association For Com-

Christian concert

By Murray Green

The first Cloverlawn Christian Concert will be held at the Community Centre on Saturday, June 17. Cloverlawn, west of Bittern Lake and Armena on Highway 616 and Range Road 233, will feature the Sherwood Park Cowboy Church Band and the Revive Gospel Singers from 2 to 5 p.m. “We are hoping to make this a yearly event,” said

one of the organizers, Mike Hofer, formerly of Holden. “The admission will be a freewill offering.” In the evening, a Contemporary Christian Youth Concert will be held from 8 to 10 p.m. featuring the band West of Here. “Tickets for this concert have to be purchased in advance from Wiseman’s Way in Camrose, or by calling me at 587-873-9755,” said Hofer.

FLAG FLYING Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Eleven-year-old Salem and his 12-year-old sister Sianna Merrick stand beside the Canadian flag their family rented from the Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak as part of the club’s fundraiser and in an effort to show Canadian spirit.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Brian, left, and Colleen Nelson proudly stand in front of their 40 solar panel array installed on their farm as a way of giving back to the community and the earth.

“It was always a dream of Brian’s to have solar energy,” said Colleen. The solar array is built on an old coral and stands on power poles that were taken down by the power company. Not only are the wooden poles better for the environment but by reusing them the couple saved them from being dumped into the landfill. A win-win for everyone. But converting to solar energy was not about saving huge amounts of money for Colleen and Brian, it was about timing. “So many things seem to come together when it is the right time,” said Brian. And by the right time, for Colleen and Brian that meant everything seemed to fall into place and now completely retired the savings they could make on producing their own energy opened opportunities to find other ways to be environmentally responsible and ultimately give to those in need. “The array provides energy for the entire farm operations (including the residence of their son who also bought into the solar investment),” said Brian. “It is a 12 Kilowatt array.” After installing the array Colleen and Brian have become very intentional about their use, or more appropriately, lack of waste, of power. But the solar array is only the latest effort by

recycled (including a clawfoot bathtub). Brian explained the build. “For two years before we built I was intentionally gathering recycled materials but I was also helping everybody I could to build their houses and garages." During the winter prior to moving into the house, Brian constructed eight foot sections in the garage. “Then on a long weekend I phoned up everyone I had helped and asked if they could come out and give a hand.” Like an old fashioned barn raiser, their home was move-in ready in three days thanks to the help of 32 people. Brian is also a self-confessed collector and handyman and believes that it is wasteful to throw things out just because they aren’t useful. “You just never know when that extra part will come in handy.” Colleen added that people are getting better at giving items to them now instead of just throwing them away. “We also grow all of our own vegetables and freeze them, do all of our own chickens every two years and buy the rest of our meat locally,” said Colleen with contagious enthusiasm. “And we intentionally grow more than we need so we can give it away to Neighbor Aid.” They have an abun-

munity Living (CAFCL) while Brian also donates time and expertise in writing for CAFCL and volunteers at the church. Both agreed that the money they save not only on being efficient but on needing to have less “stuff” in their lives, is better spent finding ways to give back. “It is such a rewarding way to live,” smiled Brian “You can save the environment and give back to the community and still live a rich fulfilling life for yourself.” Both Colleen and Brian spoke about how many people in our world are trapped by lifestyle choices. Their message being to be intentional about living a more authentic life and recognizing that everybody and anybody can do the good. “It doesn’t matter where anybody is in life they are already at the good but they can always do better,” said Brian “And share what you have and who you are,” added Colleen. After spending time with Colleen and Brian there is no doubting they would give you the shirt off their back, the one that Colleen made with her own hands. The automotive section of

Normal School graduate, teacher enjoyed first car By Murray Green

It was an exciting time in Marion (nee Wilson) Myers’ life. She was a graduate of the Normal School in Camrose when she was just 17 years old during the 1923-24 school year. Marion talked about waking up to ice on the wash basin when preparing for her day and having to cross the bridge to get to the Normal School. But, it all paid off. She had learned the rules and teaching skills, and was ready to make her mark in life. Children were not the only ones with rules. Here is a (about 1915) list of rules for teachers. 1. You will not marry during the term of your contract. 2. You are not to keep company with men. 3. You must be home between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless attending a school function. 4. You may not loiter downtown in ice cream stores. 5. You may not travel beyond the city limits unless you have the permission of the chairman of the board. 6. You may not ride in a carriage, or automobile with any man except your father or brother. 7. You may not smoke cigarettes. 8. You may not dress in bright colors. 9. You may under no circumstances dye your hair. 10. You must wear at least two petticoats. 11. Your dresses may not be any shorter than two inches above the ankles. 12. To keep the classroom neat and clean you must sweep the floor at least once a day, scrub the floor at least once a week with hot, soapy water, clean the blackboards at least once a day, and start the fire at 7 a.m. to have the school warm by 8 a.m. Back then the most common mode of transportation in rural Alberta was still the horse. But, sometimes horses showed more patience than the riders. “My older sister told me that mom would fall off the horse at times, but the horse would just stand there and wait for her to get back on,”

Teacher Marion (nee Wilson) Myers, right, enjoyed playing with kittens and her first car, a 1929 Model A Ford.

said Vonda Peterson, one of her daughters. Riding in the open air on cold days often led to creative ways of keeping warm. “Mom told us about keeping her hands warm by boiling two eggs in the morning to put into her mittens and then having them for her lunch.” As horseless carriages took over the landscape in major cities, vehicles also trickled into smaller centres shortly after. Soon looking after animals for transportation was a thing of the past. Since rule six still applied, she thought it was time to make a bold move. “The day that my mom acquired the car, she went to a farm where it was for sale. The owner gave her a lesson in the fields, and she simply drove it home.” Marion was one of the first women in Alberta to own her own car. It is a 1929 Model A Ford and was a wel-

come addition to her teaching life in rural Alberta. “One time a youngster came running into the boarding house yelling, ‘Come quick, Marion has driven her car into the slough!’,” added Vonda. Jumping into a car and driving, instead of getting a horse ready, also saved time. “Mom used to have to get to the one room schoolhouse early enough to stoke up the fire so the room would be warm when the pupils arrived. She taught Grades 1 through 12 in this one room school. I asked her how she managed to do that and she credited the older children helping out with the younger ones.” Marion taught in Rumsey, Minburn and Chauvin after graduating. She was teaching in Chauvin when she got married in August 1936. She knew what her priorities were at that time. “When my mother and father

married in 1936, my mother brought this (Model A) car, the World Book of Knowledge Encyclopedia and a piano for

the home,” recalled Vonda, about her mother’s stories. Marion liked to encourage children to read. “Mom would read out loud to the students, Little Men was one of those books. The children would often cry in the sad parts. One time when she was reading to the children, a little boy stood up and looked out the window and said, ‘The Indians are coming, the Indians are coming, and we don’t even have time to go to the outhouse!’ He’s probably in show business now, she used to say,” added Vonda. “She also mentioned that Mom put on a play with the children called The Wedding of Jack & Jill. I still have the original sheet music.” Marion had been wanting a vehicle for a few years. Henry Ford started the Ford Motor Company with a Model A. The second edition of the Model A was first produced on Oct. 20, 1927, but not sold until Dec. 2, when it replaced the venerable Model T. This new Model A was designated a 1928 model and was available in four standard colors. “My father decided they didn’t need this car, so they sold it and put the money into a savings account in my mother’s name. It wasn’t until 1960 that my mother decided to take that money out of the account and purchase a 12 piece setting of beautiful china, crystal and silverware, just in time for our wedding,” said Vonda.

A crowd of approximately 50 people gathered at the site of the new St. Francis Xavier Parish Centre located on east side of south 50th Street just north of 48th Avenue on May 23 to witness a groundbreaking ceremony. Special guests included Reverend Gregory J. Bittman, Auxiliary Bishop from the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton, City of Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer and Camrose County Reeve Don Gregorwich. Ministries and prayers

were offered by Bishop Bittman, Reverend Larry Pederson, Priest of St. Francis Xavier Church (Camrose), and Deacon Douglas Tien. Following hymns, welcoming and prayers, the site and grounds were blessed by Bishop Bittman after which he officially broke ground. Representatives from St. Joseph (Bawlf), St. Thomas (Duhamel), St. Peter and Paul (Hay Lakes), St. Stanislaus (Round Hill), and St. Francis Xavier (Camrose) also turned earth as part of the ceremony. The new Parish Centre will cost approximately $17 million (including estimated construction and other costs) to complete and will service Camrose and surrounding areas. The new space is expected to comfortably accommodate 600 people in the Nave (worship space), include a hall that will accommodate 360 people at tables or 500 people in theatre-style seating and have parking for 150 vehicles. Ground clearing has already begun and construction is expected to take approximately 24 months.

CCHS valedictorian extends gratitude on behalf of students By Lori Larsen

École Camrose Composite High School class of 2017 student Andrew Wowk, this year’s valedictorian, addressed students, CCHS staff and teachers and guests during the May 12 spring exercises graduation ceremony held at the Camrose Regional Exhibition. “I’d like to begin by expressing gratitude towards everyone who has helped us get here today. Teachers, for all the time and energy you’ve put into providing us with the best possible education, and for putting up with us when we use your early morning classes as an extension to our sleep schedules. “Family, for all the love and support you’ve provided us, pushing us to always do our best. And friends, for making the memories we will never forget and for always having our backs. Let’s get a round of applause for everyone here, especially the graduates, for this great accomplishment tonight.” In reminiscing about the past school years Wowk spoke about what CCHS has meant. “It’s crazy to think that it was already three years ago when we first walked through the doors to the Comp. That feeling of nervous anticipation on the first day, not knowing what

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster CCHS student Andrew Wowk, class of 2017 valedictorian spoke about the welcoming atmosphere of CCHS from the first day entering Grade 10 and every day there after.

to expect from it. However, our worries all faded away when we were greeted with smiling faces and pleasant “Good Mornings,” from staff at the door. “The entire atmo-

sphere of school was this way. From student council organizing events, to the overwhelming support our sports teams received and the pride that they brought to the school. These three

short years have created so many great memories that we’ll cherish. From the International Travel trip to the Christmas carols sung to each class by the Chorazz group. And I’ll never forget the chaos that ensued when Miss Gee would announce that yesterday’s homework was not just for practice, but would be taken in for marks.” Looking ahead Wowk gave some simple but powerful advice to graduates. “Ref lecting on the theme for tonight, The Future Looks Good” I believe it could not be more fitting for this class. Around the school, I’ve seen so much potential in everyone here. We came as one body of students, but will soon go our separate ways, some never crossing paths again, as we pursue the next parts of our lives. “That leads to the question, ‘What comes next?’ It could mean anything. This is the first time in our lives where the next page is blank and we hold the pen. Some of us are headed to university or college, others are going into the trades or straight into the workforce. It could mean continuing towards a career in sports, the arts, music, or even traveling across the globe. The similarities between all of them being that regardless of what you do, you can still be success-

ful doing it. All it takes to be successful is to embrace what you are good at and enjoy life. “Success is, at the end of the day, taking pride in your actions and knowing that you’ve given it your all. If you’ve tried your hardest, you’ve done all you can do. Even if you are still unsure of what your future holds, I implore you to go out, find your passion and pursue it fiercely. The world needs us and I am positive we’ll do great things. “I’d like to finish this speech with a quote from Albert Schweitzer, a Nobel Peace Prize recipient. ‘Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.’ This quote just reinforces the idea that all we need to be successful in life is to enjoy it. We’ve only got one. “I think 50 years from now when I look back at this day, these last 12 years of our lives, I’ll remember at least two things. Number one, life’s too short to stress about every little detail. If you’re too fixated on past mistakes or uncertainties of the future, you won’t have any time to enjoy in the present. And secondly, the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.”

CCHS guest speaker advises students take a moment By Lori Larsen

École Camrose Composite High School spring exercise graduation ceremony held on May 12 at the Camrose Regional Exhibition included the wise and sometimes humourous contemplations of guest speaker, Fine Arts teacher at Charlie Killam School, Jon Lindstrand. Students Camryn Plants and Jessica Romanchuk introduced Jon. “He is a man who has influenced numerous students, educators and the general public,” said Jessica. Camryn added. “We would like to thank him for not only joining us tonight, but for being so endearing, inspiring and passionate about education. Lindstrand began his speech indicating he had sought advice from friends and colleagues on what to present to the graduates. In hearing suggestions on reflecting on accomplishments and talking about the past or focusing on the future with inspiring notions of paths to travel, Lindstrand decided to speak on encouraging the graduates to breath in the moment. “I’m going to speak for a moment about this moment…and then I’ll speak to the other two. “Breathe. Feel your feet, fill your lungs and reflect on this moment. For right now, think not about what has happened or what will happen; reflect on right now. Let go of your memories, allow the past to slip away and, for a moment, release your mind of all ambitions of the future.

“Distill your mind down to the single pure act of just filling your lungs. Live in this moment, if only for a moment. You see, life evolves, it changes with us, because of and despite us. Live life in the pauses. Let go of your conscious self and act on instinct. “What you are about to embark on, you will need to take a deep breath. Fill your lungs. Take a moment to reflect on what has been and the implications of that, on what is to come. Cherish the uncertainty for a bit. There are only two directions, forward and backwards and even standing still is one of these. To pause is important and silence is critical.” Lindstrand went on to provide students with insight into the future. “Now is when you begin to answer the question that is most repugnant to teachers, “when are we ever going to use this?” Now is when you put theory into practice. This is the crucible of your lives. Testing your resolve, challenging your integrity, measuring your perseverance. In the last 12 years, you’ve had lessons about pride in craftsmanship and the importance of being thorough. You’ve also learned about simple things like the practicality of meeting deadlines and punctuality. “Ultimately what your guardians, parents and educators have aspired to do, is give you a foundation from which to build successes. He spoke about the skills employers today are looking for in candidates. “According to a study

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster CCHS students Camryn Plantz, left and Jessica Romanchuk, right introduced the Class of 2017 grad guest speaker Jon Lindstrand during the ceremony on May 12 held at the Camrose Regional Exhibition.

that looked at LinkedIn profiles from the last two years and a recent study out of Kent University, the skills that most employers look for in job applicants are: the ability to express your ideas clearly, problem solving and the ability to gather and synthesize information, drive, flexibility and the determination to overcome obstacles, the ability to contribute positively as a member of a group, understand your role and be sensitive to diverse perspectives and punctuality and time management. “Another study (Newton, 2005.) stated those soft skills such as adaptability, confidence, humility and, motivation are more important to most employers than specific qualifications. “That being said, most employers use qualifications for their initial screening process.” In preparing students for the reality of what lays ahead, Lindstrand offered some words of wisdom. “As many lessons as you have learned, the reality is that, from this point on, you are going to be tested beyond your current

emotional, intellectual, moral and physical limits. I want you to look around at those people who are here to support you, to celebrate you tonight. If all of us in this room are totally honest, we were never completely prepared for what was coming next. Nor could we be. How could we be? “There are those of us who were completely unprepared to hold our newborns in quaking arms for the first time. Those of us who have, with sweating palms and quivering legs, boarded a plane or signed a contract, not knowing where it’ll lead us. Those of us sitting in a waiting room, suffocating from the anticipation as we await the results. The utter exhaustion after that first double shift. But we are here...because we drew unknown strength and wisdom forged in the fires of experience, attained from within ourselves and those who surrounded us. “We drew from our supports and, now, we become those supports that we once called upon. Ensure that you come back to those supports when you need us. To gather advice. To vent. To rest. To rejuvenate.

To strengthen. To heal. To Nourish. To reflect on what you’ve seen. To share how you have impacted your surroundings, what you’ve done to make this place better for the people around you. “You’ve got a foundation of knowledge and skills, you’ve got an infrastructure of support. “You will need more. You need grit. You need tenacious, unrelenting perseverance. “Too often, in my opinion, we quit…saying ‘this isn’t what I want to do. This isn’t what I thought it’d be like. This job or relationship is too hard…it’s too much work…it’s not like my dream.’ And all of that might be true but that discounts our impact on the people and the situation we find ourselves in. “The fact is that when we strive to become the best person that we can be by learning from bad situations or big mistakes; everything and everyone around us becomes better as well. That may sound very naïve of me but if you relentlessly pursue being the best person that you can be then, at the end of the day, you can look back and recognize that at the very least you acted and spoke out of the genuine and pure intentions of improving your situation and the lives of those around you. To my mind, there can be nothing more noble. “As we pursue our dreams we all have hardships, loss, failures and the lessons and memories of those who have strengthened and shaped us for future success. A famous educator, John Dewey once proclaimed that ‘The self is not something ready-made, but something in continuous formation through choice of action.’ and that, ‘Failure is instructive.’ “If Dewey is correct, then, there is no reason to be afraid of failure. “An integral part of grit is your reaction to failure. You’ve got to have goals that match your strengths with a willingness to work, fail, commit to improving and then the humility, patience, integrity and wisdom to get you through the challenges. “To you, the graduands of École Camrose Composite High School, thank you for the deep honour of addressing you tonight. Relish the opportunities that lay in decisions, in indecision. Cherish the simplicity of one breath. Call on your supports. Revel in triumphs and failures and the reactions to both that will define you. Watch the crossroads. Take care of yourselves and each other.”

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

County lifts road bans By Murray Green

After a recent dry spell, Camrose County has lifted the 75 per cent road ban starting on May 23. The bans were effective from March 20 to the end of the May long weekend due to the wet spring conditions that left the gravel roads in poor condition. Although some roads are still not in great shape, County councillors wanted to give producers a break during the seeding and spraying season, which is later than in most years. Camrose County is located in the East Central region of Alberta, with its northwestern boundary located about 40 kilometres southeast of Edmonton when travelling on Highway 21. From this point, the County covers an area approximately 128.5 km (80 miles) long from the north to south by 48.25 km (30 miles) wide. Within this area, there are about 390,000 hectares of land classified as pas-

County receives STARS update By Murray Green

Camrose County listened to a STARS update at the regular Council meeting on May 9. Last year, the County agreed to a $2 per capita donation for a period of three years. Glenda Farnden, Senior Municipal Relations Liaison from STARS, made a presentation to Council outlining the benefit that the STARS Air Ambulance plays in the local communities. “We have a new handheld Istat Lab to take samples of blood that gives us instant results in the air,” explained Farnden. “We have a drill that we only use in time-sensitive cases that are life threatening. This allows us to have immediate IV access.” She revealed the other new pieces of equipment and said all 11 helicopters are equipped the same. “Now we can start lifesaving measures immediately, before the patient gets to the hospital.” Although the funding has decreased, the services haven’t slowed. “STARS Air Ambulance is available 24/7, 365 days of the year. We work with RCMP, local police departments, fire departments and ground ambulances,” shared Farnden. “About 79 per cent of our funds are generated through our STARS lottery calendar campaign and our site registration. This year with the lottery, for the first time in 24 years, we were threatened with not having a sell-out. We made it to 99.7 per cent though the generosity of Albertans. We sold a million tickets in the last 24 hours. That tells you how much Albertans care,” she said. “That leaves us with $15 million that has to be generated from other sources.” Statistics revealed that STARS has flown 217 missions into Camrose County in the past seven years, an average of 31 missions per year. Though the volume of calls are ever-increasing (approximately six per cent annually), the access to early intervention critical care, which is supplied by STARS, saves lives. “I hope that reassures the value of your (Camrose County) contribution.” STARS Air Ambulance is available 24/7 with 11 helicopters that average eight missions per

Submit a tick to research program By Murray Green

Ticks are expected to become a problem this summer. Research and monitoring will be done, but your help is needed. Albertans are encouraged to submit the ticks they find on themselves and their animals to help the Government monitor the types of ticks found in the Province. Albertans can present ticks they find in the environment, or on themselves to an Environmental Public Health Office, a First Nations Health Centre or a physician. Ticks found on pets or livestock should be submitted to a veterinarian. Information on how to remove a tick and submit it to the program is available on Alberta Health’s website. The Alberta Government has been testing ticks found on pets and farm animals since 2007. The program expanded in 2013, in partnership with Alberta Health Services and the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch, to include ticks found on people and in the environment. Test results show that the types of ticks that can carry the Lyme disease bacteria do not have established populations in Alberta. This means there is little risk of getting Lyme disease in Alberta. “Thanks to Albertans who have submitted ticks, the Government has been able to monitor what types of ticks are in the Province. Although the risk of getting Lyme disease in Alberta is very low, I encourage Albertans to keep submitting ticks they find so we can continue to assess this risk,” said Dr. Kristin Klein, Deputy Medical Officer of Health. Albertans can reduce their risk of getting tick bites by covering up as much skin as possible when going into wooded or grassy areas. Use bug spray that contains the chemical DEET, or Icaridin. Check yourself and pets for ticks after spending time outside. The tick surveillance program does not test for Lyme disease in humans. Anyone concerned about a tick bite or who thinks they may have Lyme disease, should visit their doctor. Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria called Borrelia Burgdorferi. Humans may get Lyme disease if they are bitten by an infected tick.

Every detail was covered “We had a very positive buying experience with Zetsen Master Builders from start to finish. We thoroughly appreciated the walk-through process when we were shown all the details and went through every aspect of our home prior to moving in. We felt 100 percent confident moving in, knowing our home better. We’re also very happy with the service regarding a few minor inor “touch-ups” after our one-month check-up.
