Big Valley Parade this Thursday By Dan Jensen

The Camrose Chamber of Commerce is fine-tuning the details for this Thursday's Big Valley Parade. "We're almost ready," said Camrose Chamber of Commerce administrative assistant Sheila DeJesus. "It's exciting to see how everything has started to come together." Averaging 100 entries since its start, the Big Valley Parade is one of the biggest parades in tbe province, behind the Calgary Stampede Parade and the Capital X Parade in Edmonton. "We're expecting to reach 100 entries again this year," said De Jesus. "We're at 60 entries now and more are coming in every day." Parade entries will be judged by Camrose Rotarians, who will hand out awards for best commercial, non-commercial, visiting/community, antique, novelty, mascot, horse entry and heavy hitch. "We have a lot of entries from surrounding areas, including Killam, Stettler, Sylvan Lake, Bawlf, Daysland and Bashaw," said DeJesus. The parade will also feature two marching bands: the Al-Shamal Shriners Marching Band from Edmonton, and the Clan MacNaughton Pipe Band, from Sherwood Park. The Camrose Spirals, fresh from an appearance at the Canadian Jump Rope Championship in Calgary, will provide entertainment prior to the official start of the parade at 10:30. "We're encouraging spectators to arrive early so they can get a good seat and see these young people perform," said DeJesus. Another highlight could be a fly-over by the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, which will be performing in the skies above Camrose July 28 and 30. "We've been in talks with them but as of today (July 19) we haven't been given an answer," said DeJesus. The parade will take the same route as it has in previous years, moving south down mainstreet before heading east and proceeding back north on 48 Street. The final entry is expected to pass by at 12 noon. Those who are unable to get out of their homes may watch a live broadcast of the parade by tuning into Cable TV of Camrose's Channel 10. Businesses, individuals or organizations that would like to be part of the Big Valley Parade are encouraged to contact the Camrose Chamber of Commerce office at 780-672-4217.

BVJ excited about this year's lineup By Murray Green

The Big Valley Jamboree is jammed full of great music and side attractions, but that didn't stop producer Larry Werner from adding another event to the outdoor music festival, July 28 to 31 in Camrose. While the indoor trade show is going to be expanded for the shoppers in the family, it is the hilariously funny Boss Hog Pig Races that have people squealing with glee already. "They have been going over gang busters all across Canada. We have been trying to get them here for five years now," said Larry. "They are here to add another family component, add a little bit of excitement and humour. We think this will be a nice addition." The event will be held twice on Thursday and three times on the other days. The parade of great bands headed for the stages has caused ticket sales to go up. "I think we have put together a really good lineup. The kick-off party will start strong with Shane Yellowbird, Sawyer Brown and Dean Brody," said Larry. "It is an excellent mix and Sawyer Brown's Mark Miller is a fan favourite and we all know they bring a vast amount of excitement to the stage. It is a good way to launch this year's event, so we are excited about that. We are also having a ping-pong ball drop again. The winner receives a trip for two to Vancouver to see Taylor Swift." The first 1,500 people to the kick-off party will receive a meal from Schneiders and a Dr. Pepper. Larry isn't concerned about bringing entertainers like Yellowbird, Sawyer Brown and

headliner Toby Keith back for a return engagement. "At the end of the day, we have about 200 artists that drive the entertainment business in North America to pick from and over the years we are going to be bringing some back. We want to bring the crowd favourites back. Bands like Sawyer Brown continually satisfy audiences and the timing was right to bring them back." Music enthusiasts will also enjoy a first time act to Camrose. "We are pleased to have the Judds. Wyonna was here years ago, but this is the first time they will be together here. They are really excited about it and I know we are as well. There are a lot of people looking forward to seeing the Judds perform in Camrose." Another sought after entertainer is Toby Keith. "He is one of those guys that fits in well with an Alberta audience. Toby comes here to put on a show and it doesn't matter to him if it is hot or cold, he comes here to play and show why he is a headliner. He is a very diverse singer and the band is diverse, so you know you are going to get a good show." One artist Larry is thrilled about snagging is Rodney Crowell. "He is one of those guys that I have really respected as a songwriter. I have never seen him perform, so I'm excited about seeing him. I not only want to hear his classic songs, but some of his new stuff. He writes some very interesting material. I look forward to hearing Rodney Crowell and also I have a wide interest in everybody that is here and it is really hard to just pick one. Charlie Daniels, Jimmy Rankin, Gord Bamford are all good. Gord has just come off of some CCMA

awards and he has a new hit single that is doing really well. I think we have a great show lined up and each one of these performers are going to come out and show why they are main stage artists." Headlining the Saturday performances will be Jason Aldean. "He is one of the hottest acts in the business right now in the United States," said Larry. "He doesn't have the same exposure in Canada right now, but it is definitely coming. He is not an overnight success, this is something that has been coming for awhile. He has been kicking it up a notch and the next two years will belong to Jason Aldean." Larry reports that advance ticket sales are up more than 10 per cent over last year. "Our capacity is 25,000 and we hope to get to that. We need some sunshine for four days, we haven't had that for a few years. If we can get to the numbers we had last year, I'll be a pretty happy camper." The main stage at the Ottawa Bluesfest came crashing down on July 16 during a severe thunderstorm. "My heart goes out to those people and our prayers are with them," said Larry. "We will be making sure safety comes first and we will be checking everything. Since July 1 we have been checking and double checking and will continue to do so up to and during the event. We want to make sure we have all things addressed. People buy tickets and camp here and we want to make sure they are looked after." In 2009, one person was killed at BVJ when the stage collapsed.

There'll be plenty of good music for dancing at this year's Big Valley Jamboree.

Camrose County won't contribute to PAC operations By Dan Jensen

Camrose County will not be contributing to the operating costs of a new Camrose Performing Arts Centre. County council sent a letter to Camrose mayor Marshall Chalmers July 13 indicating that it will not provide any funding for the centre beyond the $1 million it has already committed for construction. The letter also respectfully declined a joint meeting with City of Camrose representatives to discuss annual operating funding agreements. The issue of operating funding was put on the agenda of Camrose County council's July 11 meeting agenda after a request from City council that the County consider providing a flat sum (operating) contribution. "It was a different proposal than we had ever heard about

Don Gregorwich

before," said County Reeve Don Gregorwich. The County council decision is similar to the decisions made by Mountain View College, Cypress County, Grande Prairie County and Lacombe County. In

each case the County contributed capital dollars for construction for an arts centre in their respective urban centres but nothing for operations. Mountain View County provided $1.2 million for an E-Learning Centre at Olds, while Cypress County contributed $250,000 for an arts centre in Medicine Hat. "In comparison you will see that the contribution of $1 million that we have made far exceeds the amount that the other groups have made to their performing arts centres," said Gregorwich. Camrose County is in favour of the establishment of a board of governors as outlined in the draft CPAC board of governors agreement dated June 24, but as of yet is unsure as to whether it will have a seat on that board. "I think we will be involved as a member because of our (capi-

tal) contribution but I am not quite sure of the status we will have," said Gregorwich. County resident and Camrose Arts Society Theo Thirsk said he is disappointed that County council would not consider providing operating funding like it does for the recreational facilities. "I feel there will be several County residents utilizing the facility as performers, not just as patrons. "I think it will be a big benefit to the community economically, culturally and socially." Thirsk added he would not like to see a situation where there are two levels of fees for users, one for residents of Camrose and one for residents of the County. "For several residents of the County, Camrose is their community as well," he said.

"It is the centre for all of us." City council gave approval in principle at its June 27 meeting to the construction of the performing arts centre with the understanding that Camrose County provide $1 million, the provincial government $3.5 million, and the University of Alberta $750,000. The remaining City share of $12.75 million will come from MSI funding ($4.5 million), debenture ($4 million), and short term funding (up to a maximum of $4.25 million). The University of Alberta is investigating the possibility of whether it can provide lights-on funding. Camrose County provides operational dollars for the Edgeworth Centre as part of a recreation package that takes into account County residents' participation in that facility.

Habitat Camrose enters discussions on strategic plan Submitted

Habitat for Humanity Camrose has entered discussions with Habitat for Humanity Canada regarding an amended strategic plan. "These talks have been productive and respectful, and much progress has been made, but in order to proceed in good faith, these negotiations must con-

tinue to take place “in house” and out of the public eye," said Habitat for Humanity Camrose executive director Cody McCarroll. "Although we at Habitat Camrose appreciate the desire of concerned citizens to start petitions or otherwise advocate for our cause, at this time we must allow for confidential communication between our affiliate and

the National Office to take precedence." Habitat Camrose supports both Habitat for Humanity Canada and its Edmonton affiliate in their efforts to build more homes for families in need. "To clarify, Habitat Canada and Habitat Edmonton are not involved in a “hostile takeover” of the Camrose affiliate," said

McCarroll. "On the contrary, both organizations have been instrumental in securing funding for several affiliates, including our own. Moreover, Habitat Edmonton’s efforts in engaging thousands of community volunteers in building over 80 homes this year are to be applauded. Habitat Camrose is eager to work in partnership with both Habitat

Canada and the Edmonton affiliate." The position of the board of Habitat Camrose is that selfgovernance is vital in sustaining our community support and in ensuring the future success of our organization, which is measured by continuing to serve families in need in our community.

CENTRA CAM 50/50 WINNER

Tracey Avison (second from left), of the Camrose area, received a cheque for $5,000 from Centra Cam clients Lindsay, Carolyn and Terra after her name was drawn from entries in Centra Cam's June 50/50 draw. Tracey purchased her ticket at the Rose City Farmers' Market. Garry Zetsen and Kevin Lindholm, from Zetsen Master Builders, made the draw June 6. The funds raised from the 50/50 raffle will go towards the cost of purchasing furniture and equipment for Centra Cam's main facility.

PEN POINTS by Berdie Fowler

May the sun shine as Camrose hosts this year’s biggest weekend influx of tourists Thousands of visitors are expected to arrive in Camrose this weekend by car, truck, camper, motor home, whatever. One of the major attractions is the Big Valley Jamboree which annually brings loyal fans of old favourites as well as upcoming country song-writers, singers and musicians. The other major attraction is the Canadian Forces Snowbirds featuring nine aerobatic Tutor jets which demonstrate awesome teamwork and precision skills required for high-speed formation flying. Details of their scheduled events, from Thursday to Sunday, are elsewhere in this paper. Assignments of the pilots and technicians who keep the Snowbirds’ Tutors in flight include creating in youth an interest in and knowledge of aviation. With the cooperative efforts of the Camrose Flying Club and Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA) Flight 137, along with catering help from Café Connections (an Open Door project) and Wildrose Co-op, a youths’ picnic on Thursday will provide a dream opportunity for that to occur. Youngsters may get autographs, too. Admission is free for up to 400 under age 17 youths but tickets (available at Wildrose Co-op) are required. This year senior residents in assisted living housing in the Edgeworth Centre area will be only a few steps from the open area of Rudy Swanson Park, and other open areas, from which it will be easy to view the Snowbirds’ air demonstration on Thursday evening. Preparation for these events has been ongoing for many months and it has involved the collaboration of the City of Camrose, Panhandle Productions, as well as much volunteer effort. This weekend, the entire community can be involved, too, by giving visitors a good impression of our city. We can do so by being friendly and helpful to those who need information or direction, by serving them well at the gas pump or restaurant or retail store. Anyone can help keep our community clean and tidy by depositing litter in proper containers or picking it up – even if someone else dropped it. It is unfortunate that wind, rain and hail has recently damaged shrubs and flowers – some look good from far but they are far from good! May the sun shine as Camrose hosts this year’s biggest weekend influx of tourists! Previous Big Valley Jamboree visitors have boosted our local economy by an estimated $18,000,000. That figure could increase as a result of recent promotions appearing in The Edmonton Journal which portrayed Camrose as a great place to live and do business. We must remember, however, that we can’t continue to attract crowds of people by simply telling them we are a great place for service, satisfaction and entertainment; we have to be that place – and each of us can help to make and keep it so.

Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 500 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Dear Editor: I write regarding Energy Minister Liepert’s comments at the recent Ministers’ meeting, about needing a National Energy Strategy. He stated that Canada needs to establish a common regulator process to expedite projects that export energy (both electrical and hydrocarbons) either to the US or Asian Pacific regions. This may all sound fine and good, until one examines what has happened in Alberta under his guidance. It is obvious that Mr. Liepert is suggesting that the other provincial energy ministers duplicate recent (2009) Albertan legislation that makes land acquisition in Alberta quick, cheap, and easy, with no recourse to the Courts. This legislation includes: 1. The Alberta Land Stewardship Act (ALSA, known as Bill 36, presented by Ted Morton,

Minister of Finance), which gives a Minister the right to unilaterally decide what land should be used for (i.e. power lines, pipelines, ring roads, etc.), and binds “the Crown, local government bodies, decision-makers, and all other persons,” as well as denying landowners access to the Courts (Section 15). 2. The Alberta Land Assembly Project Area Act (known as Bill 19, presented by Jack Hayden, Minister of Agriculture) allows a Minister (and or “a Regional Plan”) to assemble land for power lines, pipelines, roads, and such projects. This gives a Minister the right to establish the market value and any compensation offered, and to rescind statutory consents or the terms or conditions of the statutory consent. A Bill 10 amendment (Section 3, c) lists eight things a statutory consent “does not” include, but fails to state what it does include, so it is still unclear to Albertans as to what can be “rescinded.” And, if the landowner objects, or if in the “opinion” of a Minister “that person has done, is doing or is about to do any act or thing constituting or directed toward the commission of an offence” (Section 16.1), (s)he can be fined up to $100,000 or serve two years in jail (Section 17.1). 3. The Electric Statutes Amendment Act (Bill 50) gives the Alberta PC Government the

authority to declare projects such as the proposed HVDC transmission lines as “critical,” thereby eliminating the “needs assessment” process. While ATCO and AltaLink reap the guaranteed 9% profits, Albertans are forced to pay the cost of building the HVDC lines to export electricity to the US through the increased transmission fees on every electricity bill. By enacting similar legislation, other provinces could likewise “expedite” projects all across Canada, and create a National Energy Strategy which eliminates time-consuming hearings to determine “need,” guarantees land acquisition, sets market values by eliminating access to the Courts, determines the project routing/location, and insures that the landowners pay for the proposed projects. Since provinces have no jurisdiction over Aboriginal lands, the Federal Government would have to enact Federal legislation (similar to Alberta’s), creating a National Energy Strategy that deals with Aboriginal and Federal lands … thereby facilitating quick, easy, and cheap nation-wide land acquisition, that would as Mr. Liepert suggests, “expedite” Canada’s exporting of energy. Bill Leithead, Bawlf

Harrison shines on Camrose golf course By Murray Green

Andrew Harrison shot a 73 on the Camrose course July 21.

There is nothing like playing a home round to get the energy flowing. Andrew Harrison of the Camrose Golf Course fired a 73 to win his age division in the Alberta McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour in Camrose on July 21. "This is my fifth tournament on the tour and I have won four of them. I played well today, so we'll see how I did," said Andrew. "I think, I won my age division again and it might be good enough to place second or third overall." Brett Hawken of Montgomery Glen GC in Wetaskiwin earned his first tour win by firing a steady even-par 71, to derail any hopes that the host club's Andrew Harrison had of defending his 2010 Camrose Junior Open title. Andrew ended up in second place. When Andrew won the 2010 Camrose Junior Open he became the secondyoungest winner in the tour's history. Fourteen-year-old Andrew often golfs against boys up to four years older than himself. "I just like shooting low scores and playing golf and see how I match up against others." He lists driving as his strength. The Grade 10 student says he will work on his chipping and putting to compete with the older boys on tour. "I've been playing this series for three years. I know the Camrose course well, so it definitely helps. Since I know the other courses on this tour, it helps as well," said Andrew. He won in Drayton Valley with a score of 74, Leduc with a 75, Wetaskiwin 78 and at the Ponoka Junior Open tournament last Monday, Andrew shot a 76 to finish tied for eighth place, just five strokes off the leader on a very wet course.

"This is our 16th year and we quit trying long ago to make the tour bigger. We have been in the 25 to 28 tournament range for several seasons," said Dunc Mills, the executive director of the McLennan Ross Golf tour. "We are always on the lookout to add good quality sites to the tour. We were approached three or four years ago by pro Bill Penny and Pat Bohnet, who runs the junior program, to come here. We have always had several golfers from Camrose and when we had the opportunity to add the Camrose junior open to our tournaments, we took advantage of that. It fits nicely with our central Alberta swing we have. I try to schedule the events, so golfers don't have to go from one end of the province to another every other day." Dunc enjoys his annual trip to Camrose. "We are treated very well here and the course is good. It is not super long, but it doesn't mean it isn't a good test for them and we like that. We have a wide variety of skill set with the juniors." He feels the course is good for those looking for a challenge, as well as golfers who are just starting. "It meets the challenge of a wide variety of skills. The tour was started in 1996 by Ryan Vold of Wolf Creek (Ponoka), Craig Martin of the Edmonton Sun and Randy Parker of Par-Com Marketing. They decided to start tournaments to encourage junior golfers to take up the game. They started with nine tournaments the first year." The main idea behind the tour, was to make sure young golfers were having fun. "It gives them a chance to have good competition, a good learning process, play at different golf courses, meet new friends, travel and have fun at the same time," added

Dunc. "We have had good golfers come out of junior programs in Alberta. This also teaches golfers life skills. They learn about rules, officials, being on time, how to fill out a scorecard, how to dress, how to behave and the code of conduct. This is all different than just playing a round of golf with their buddies. We want them to learn skills to take with them into adulthood. We also want them to enter tournaments and stay in the game in the future." Dunc says they also learn honesty, dependability, accountability, integrity and how to make decisions and living with them. "Junior golf teaches them all of these things. If they ever get on television is irrelevant," said Dunc. "Having said that, we have two golfers on the RBC tournament in B.C." He said golf needs young participants to come out to keep the sport strong. "This program is a great way to attract new golfers." Michael Harrison of Camrose shot a 77 to finish tied for fourth, but won his 1995-96 age division. Other Camrose golfers, Landon Pilger was one back with a 78 and was tied for seventh overall (tied for second the 1997 and later category), while Derek Rudosky scored a 79 to share the ninth spot. Derek was tied for fifth in his age group. Danton Davis was tied for fifth in the 1997 and later division with an 83 score. The Harrison brothers and Landon all qualified for the finals. On the girls' side, Katie Griffiths of Red Deer won with an 89. A Camrose golfer followed her on to the leader board. Micaela Stone fired a 92 to earn the spot up for grabs in the Tour Championship on Monday, August 29, in Ponoka at the Wolf Creek Golf Resort.

Renman wins Five Peaks running series By Murray Green

The 5 Peaks Running Trail Series event in Camrose came down to a couple of local participants. Robert Renman edged Brendan Lunty by five seconds to cross the finish line in 55:16 in the 12 kilometre Enduro category. Only four runners completed the course in under an hour on the Camrose ski trails, Saturday, July 16. Robert is a cross-country running coach at the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus and he wanted to show some of his students by example. "I do fairly well in events like this and since it was on a familiar trail, I wanted to do well," said Robert. "Brendan is my training partner in the Camrose Running Club and we push each other all of the time. If he is in the race, I know it is going to be a hard one because he is very good." The runners have different strengths in a cross-country event. "Brendan is very good going up the hills and I gain my ground back doing down the hills," said Robert jokingly. "He gains on me going up and I get it back going down and it is like an elastic band effect when we run together."

Robert prefers the flat surfaces and fast races, while Brendan tends to make his moves when everyone else is struggling up the hills. "Going up and down is tougher on me, but the last couple of kilometres were flatter on the ski trails, so I had the opportunity to catch up to Brendan before the finish line. I like to finish strong, whereas Brendan keeps an even pace. If I am close at the finish, I feel confident." Most Enduro courses are about 14 kilometres rather than 12. "I didn't even think of the time. I just concentrated on the course and staying with Brendan." The course was a little soft and muddy in some spots. "This course was very challenging and one of the hardest I have ever raced," said Robert. "The combination of the wet spots made it tough and it get very hot and muggy towards the end of the race. We had a bit of a wind, but it was at our backs coming in, so it didn't help for breathing. It was tough when it was slippery. You don't want to step in a bad spot. You don't know what the footing will be like." With all of the rain that the area has had, most local

runners didn't receive an opportunity to test the course prior to the event. "We went out earlier and cut branches and trimmed the grass to get it ready, so we were busy with that." Robert didn't want to speak for the club, but he thought holding another event like this next year would be a good idea. "If 5 Peaks want to come out here next year, I think it would be good for Camrose. The thing we should do for next time, is run on it more prior to the race so it has more of a path feel to it. The trail is a good hard loop and 5 Peaks like the events in the bushes rather than the open space. This is a difficult trail, so if people raced for the first time and finished the race and are not happy with their times, it will only get better." He believes the event is good for Camrose. "We had about 400 runners and when the word gets out that it is a good course, we could increase those numbers." Prizes are given to those who complete every event. "I think some people like to do that (finish all five races), so it draws some people out and to Camrose as well."

Adam French of Camrose also cracked the top 15 by placing 14th with a time of 1:07:44. Local performers Jason Ernst and Bryan Cole were 29th and 30th overall. However, Bryan was the top runner in the 10 to 14 age category. Devon Havinga and Stuart Erskine crossed the line in 40th and 46th places. Other local runners entered included Alvin Eyolfson, 60th; Lauren Brookes, 69th; Paddi Ann Grant, 73rd; Taylor Bulger, 82nd; Wade Elliot, 89th; Trent Kenyon, 112th and Tanya Rolseth, 152nd. A total of 170 runners entered the Enduro event. The children's race was one kilometre and the sport course was eight km. All entrants in the children's event were declared winners. Evan Smelquist of Camrose gave Camrose a double win by garnering the fastest time in the eight kilometre sport event. He crossed the line in 40:05 and won by 13 seconds. Jordan Fontaine of Camrose made the top 10 with a time of 43:40. Mary MacArthur of Camrose was the top female in the event and placed 48th with a time of 58:53.

"Evan competes in triathlons, so he is very competitive. He does a lot of swimming and biking as well. He competes in the shorter races, while I go for the longer one," said Robert. Other local runners included Ruth Foged, 81st; Don Hutchinson, 83rd; Lori Lunty, 91st; Lucy Ernst, 94th; Tammy Richard, 95th; Brent Proctor, 103rd; Heisler's Janet Wolbeck, 104th; Denise Renman, 122nd; Kingman's Glenn Bjorgum, 124th; Kingman's Michelle Bjorgum, 139th; Ferintosh's Christine Gustafson, 142nd and Jean Proctor, 150. A total of 154 runners entered the sport event. The Camrose and area drew about 30 runners and Robert hopes they will continue in the sport. "Hopefully, they had a taste of a good event and want to come back or go to other events. I can say that all of the 5 Peaks races are easier, so I hope that gives them confidence to go to more races. It is a healthy lifestyle choice to run and I hope more people enjoy it." Augustana will be hosting a college race in October by the Stoney Creek Centre.

$959 PACE High School Outreach student Natasha Starcheski displays her art work on July 20 at Merchants Tea and Coffee House during the opening of the show. The art work will be on display until September 2. By Murray Green

Current and former PACE High School Outreach students unveiled their art work entitled Inner Conflict on July 20 at Merchants Tea and Coffee House. The display is part of many that are featured during the 16th annual Artwalk presented by the Camrose Arts Society. "PACE students, out of my very long life of experience, are some of the most creative people that I have encountered," said PACE teacher M. J. Kelly. "Their creativity comes out in writing, through their conversation and we have art, music and drama classes now. It is a process that really helps them focus on what is important in life and so they can move forward. This is our fifth art show, but this is the first of three in a series." The three conflicts are self versus self, self versus others and the third is self versus the environment. "PACE just completed its 15th year now, so wanted to draw from past students as well. We had a ton of people respond," said Kelly. "We have had thousands of students who are talented." The theme of self versus self reflects the inner conflict or struggles people have experienced in life. All humans, from infancy to death, face conflict in everything they process, while making choices. "I have five or six poems that I wrote about bulimia, depression, people fighting themselves about choices they make in life, plastic surgery and the empathy of putting yourself in someone else's shoes," said current student Natasha Starcheski. "Most of my poetry is quite deep. It helps me and I enjoy doing it. The words come easily because it reflects what is happening to me or people in my life personally. I want to be a phyciatrist, so I like to see the skeletons people have and help them. It also helps me by talking to other people. I can take a story and relate to others." Natasha feels that if it wasn't for PACE, she probably wouldn't have tried to finish high school. "I really enjoy the teachers and they

instilled confidence in me. This is good because some students don't get a chance to show off their work and talents." Some of the students feel their paths have allowed them substantial experience. The students and friends of PACE used photography, painting, collages, drawings, sculptures and writing to reflect their feelings. "My twin brother and I liked art, but it was M. J. Kelly who allowed us to enjoy it at a higher level," said Terrence Bexson III, who attended PACE nine years ago. "PACE allowed us to mature as young adults. I didn't know what I wanted to do. Now I'm training to be a homeopathic physician and taking some correspondence classes out of Toronto. I have to go there for some on-site training two times a year." Terrance's first seven years of life were spent going back and forth between Toronto and here because of his parents' divorce. "The education system is different and each time it was an adjustment. I went to PACE and it became a system I could adjust to. After, I received straight As and it was a good experience for me. I was inspired at school." He found that even PACE has certain rules to follow. "Apparently there are rules in painting. My first painting was of a sky that was on an angle. It took my teacher (Kelly) a few months to tell me that the sky should be more horizontal. I accepted that and I still have that painting at the entrance of my brother's house. It is there more as a reflection of that time. This is a creative venue for students and I'm glad to be a part of it." Artists include Cody O'Riordan, Braidy Welch, Kylee WarkusForget, Jody Whitehead, Spencer Savorn, Terrence Bexson III, Natasha Starcheski, Tew Isaac, Stephanie Friesen, Tim Johnson, Brenda Briggs, Kaitlyn Bjorgum and teacher M. J. Kelly. The art work will be on display until September 2. For more information on the Artwalk contact the Arts Society at 780-6729949.

Donalda gallery presents the beauty of nature Submitted The Donalda Gallery for the Arts is pleased to present its latest exhibit “The Beauty of Nature”, featuring the art works of Florence McMahon. Florence was born in 1943, and raised on a farm near Daysland. Raised in a rural atmosphere she learned to appreciate the beauty of nature. Florence enjoys painting old buildings, elevators, flowers, landscapes, and other creations of Mother Nature. She and her husband Grant now live in Camrose. Florence has worked with different mediums throughout the years,

including water colors, acrylics, and pastels; her latest passion is for oils. Her original oil paintings are done on canvas, consisting of many layers and long hours. Most of her original paintings are available in Giclee canvas prints. Florence has little formal training in art and is mostly self-taught. She has taken classes from various instructors, including Carol Chapman, and spent many years fine tuning her work to get the results she now produces. An active member of the Bittern Lake Art Guild and Alberta Commu-

nity Art Clubs Association (ACACA), Florence has entered pieces into the ACACA juried central zone show each year since 2007. Her “Crocuses” picture was picked to proceed onto the Alberta Wide show in Red Deer in 2007. In 2010 “Nesses Dairy” in Camrose was shown for a month at the Red Deer Museum, where her original oil painting “Forgotten Necessities” is currently on display. “American Beauty” is currently showing at the finals of the Alberta Seniors Games. Florence has showcased her art in various locations such as the Duggan Mall in Camrose, the Alberta Seniors

Games, the Camrose Art Walk, the Lacombe Art Exhibit and Sale, the Ponoka Stampede, and now at the Donalda Gallery for the Arts. You are invited to join us at the Gallery on Friday, July 29, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., to meet Florence in person and experience “The Beauty of Nature” for yourself. Florence’s works will be on display at the Donalda Gallery for the Arts until August 7, 2011. The Donalda Gallery for the Arts is open Thursday to Sunday (and holiday Mondays) from 12 noon to 7 p.m. throughout the summer.

It All Started At The Bailey... Verlyn and Mardell Olson have been married for 35 years. Their enduring romance started on July 28, 1973, when the couple spent their first date at the Bailey Theatre. The young couple sat in the front row of the balcony and the movie was Cabaret. Mardell remembers that Verlyn had on purple plaid pants and she was wearing something with very, very puffy sleeves.

Camrose County Johnstone places second in dash By Murray Green The Bashaw Flash, Reg Johnstone, had a great showing at the Calgary Stampede GMC Rangeland Derby. However, Grande Prairie's Kelly Sutherland went home with the most cash and the chuckwagon racing crown on July 17. It was Kelly's 12th victory at the Calgary Stampede. He pocketed a second straight $100,000 cheque. Reg kept pace through the first four furlongs with a two-wide

thundering race, but in the end Kelly pulled ahead for good. Kurt Bensmiller finished third and Jerry Bremner was fourth. All of the rigs finished in the same order they started on the barrels. Reg, who recently turned 63, captured his first aggregate award at the Stampede with solid and consistent times the first eight days of racing. He had eight penalty-free runs and won the aggregate

without winning a single heat. Reg had a good semifinal run to quality for the mad dash for cash. This was Reg's fourth trip to the championship dash and for his efforts he received $25,000 for coming in second. The top eight chuckwagons in the aggregate earned automatic return berths at next year's Stampede. Then the rest of the 36-wagon field is filled with the top 18 from the World Pro regular season standings and the top 10 from the Canadian Pro standings.

Building permits behind By Dan Jensen

It appears Camrose construction companies are having a more difficult time finding work this year than in 2010. A building permit report submitted to City council by Chief Building Inspector Doug Delmage July 11 showed that, to the end of June, the City of Camrose had issued 26 permits for single fixed dwellings and 24 permits for apartment duplex units. The number of permits issued by the City of Camrose to the end of June 2010 was 63, with 39 of those being for single fixed dwelling units and 14 being for apartment duplex units. The total value of building permits issued by the City of Camrose at the half way mark of this year was $14,543,431, down from $16,546,825 at the end of June, 2010.

The residential value was $12,229,911, followed by the industrial value of $1,043,220, the commercial value of $688,500, and the institutional value of $581,800. The residential value after six months of 2010 stood at $14,304,982. The institutional value was second at $1,567,000, followed by the commercial value at $627,843 and the industrial value at $47,000. The total value of building permits issued in June (2011) was $3,087,100, with $2,937,100 coming from residential construction and $150,000 coming from commercial. The total value of building permits issued in June, 2010 was $3,990,000, with $2,501,000 coming from residential, $1,467,000 from institutional, $15,000 from industrial and $7,000 from commercial.

Evraz Camrose Works donates $2,750 and Kodiaks' jersey

FVAS receives support of community By Dan Jensen

A major Camrose business is getting behind the Family Violence Action Society in a big way. Evraz Inc. NA Camrose Works presented a cheque for $2,750 to FVAS program director Sheralyn Dobos last week in support of domestic education violence and education programs. Evraz also donated an autographed Camrose Kodiaks' jersey for a FVAS fund-raising raffle. "I think it (FVAS) is a great organization that could definitely use a lot more community support," said Evraz general manager Mike Howard. "It is a great program that is underfunded." Howard's opinion of FVAS is great enough that he is contributing his business and marketing skills to the organization as a member of its board of directors. "Jerry Greenfield, co-founder of Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream, said if you support the community they will support you," said Howard. "I believe that. The community has done its part as a local employer; it is our responsibility to give back." Howard isn't the only representative from a well-known business to feel that way. Christina Wallace, barrister and solicitor with Fielding and Company,

Family Violence Action Society program director Sheralyn Dobos accepted cheques last week for $2,750 from Evraz Camrose Works' general manager Mike Howard (left) and $200 from Canadian Auto Workers' chief steward David Strilchuk. Evraz Camrose Works also donated a signed Camrose Kodiaks' jersey for a FVAS fund-raising raffle.

also recently joined the FVAS board. In addition to her knowledge of law, Wallace brings experience in community education and fund development. "It's important to me to be involved where I live, beyond my professional work," said Wallace. "We all have the capacity to make our community a better place." The Family Violence Action Society is comprised of community members who share a vision to build a respectful,

supportive violence-free community where all people are safe and secure in their homes and schools, as well as on the streets. Along with donations from local donations and other agencies, it receives funding from Camrose and District Support Services, the Office for the Prevention of Family Violence and Bullying (Alberta) and local donations and other agencies. "We welcome opportunities to work with agencies and community groups to increase

awareness of family violence issues, including intervention and prevention," said Dobos. "Our mission is to seek to reduce the occurrence and impact of violence in our community." Family Violence Action Society provides a range of services for adults and children. Changing Ways, a counselling and support group, is provided for men involved in domestic violence, while another group, Choices, is offered for women. Both work with participants to increase their understanding of what healthy and unhealthy relationships look like, gain an understanding of their emotions, learn to communicate more effectively, and decrease their levels of stress. An eightweek anger management class is provided for adults who want to deal with chronic "generic" anger and rage not related to their marriage, commonlaw or dating relationships. Another program, Parenting After Violence, aimed at parents with at least one child age six or under, helps parents learn how family violence impacts children and parenting relationships. "We look at family patterns, positive discipline, anger and conflict management," said Dobos. FVAS works with junior

high and high school students who have issues surrounding bullying and impulse control. "We have counselling for children who have been affected by domestic violence and bullying, and also interim counselling for adults having to do with domestic violence," said Dobos. Individuals can inquire directly about any of FVAS' services by calling CDSS at 780672-0141. "We are taking registrations in these summer months for programs that resume in the fall," said Dobos. Domestic violence affects about one in ten Alberta families – the highest rate in Canada. "The cycle of violence is learned at home and is repeated by the next generation unless something is done to change," said Dobos. "Between 80 and 90 per cent of children growing up in homes where there is violence are aware of it, and affected by it. A little boy growing up in a violent home is one thousand times more likely to become an abuser than a boy raised in a home where anger is managed in healthy ways. Girls are more likely to find themselves in abusive relationships as adults." Charitable donations to support the work of FVAS may be made securely online at: http:// fvasCentral.ca

Simple alternatives to medicine As seniors continue to live longer, they want to be able to enjoy the life they are living. As a result, more attention is being paid to taking care of oneself so that the senior years can be enjoyed. One of the key things they can be mindful of is prescription abuse. Lifestyle choices should include learning about the medications talked about by doctors and discussing other options if medication seems counterintuitive at this time. Keep in mind that the average physician visit is 10 minutes long, making it difficult for many doctors to keep abreast of all of their patients' conditions. It is important for patients to do their own safeguarding as well. To reduce reliance on many prescription medications, seniors may be able to simply adjust certain choices in diet and exercise. For example, cutting down on fatty foods may help reduce cholesterol. Reduction in sodium intake can lower blood pressure.

Understanding osteoporosis Most adults recall a time or times when their mothers insisted they drink their milk. Though it might not have been preferred at the time, adults might now recognize Mom was doing her best to help her kids build and maintain strong bones. Those who didn't listen to Mommy dearest might find themselves among the millions who live with osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones and increases the risk of unexpected fractures. But why milk? While milk alone won't prevent osteoporosis, dairy products like milk are rich in calcium, an essential nutrient for building and maintaining strong bones. In addition, getting an early start is especially important, as roughly 85-90 percent of adult bone mass is acquired by age 18 in girls and age 20 in boys. Though this still might not inspire kids to pour themselves a glass of milk, perhaps a better understanding of osteoporosis and its potentially debilitating effects can inspire adults and children alike to do all they can to prevent the onset of osteoporosis. What Is Osteoporosis? Osteoporosis is often mistaken as a condition that only affects little old ladies. While osteoporosis is most common in older women, anyone can develop it. As many as half of all women and a quarter of men older than 50 will break a bone because of osteoporosis, which many men and women are not even aware they have until that initial injury occurs. What Happens When a Person Has Osteoporosis? When discussing osteoporosis, it's best to first discuss osteopenia, a silent condition the precedes osteoporosis, often robbing bones of their strength. Osteopenia is related to bone mineral density, which measures the levels of minerals in the bones. When BMD levels are low, a person is said to have osteopenia, which can, and often does, gradually become osteoporosis. Osteopenia is akin to an accomplished art thief. Methodical and often unnoticed, osteopenia exhibits no physical signs, and even the most physically active people could have osteopenia and not know it. The first warning sign could be a fractured bone. When a person has fractured a bone, he or she might already have osteoporosis. When osteoporosis has established itself, the bones have weakened and become thin and are highly susceptible to fracture. For example, it's not impossible for a person with osteoporosis to lift a bag of groceries and break a bone or suffer a collapsed vertebra in the back. Cement truck collides with train

We offer total car care.

By Murray Green

A man is in serious condition after the cement truck he was driving collided head-on with the side of a train on July 18. At about 4 p.m. Camrose RCMP responded to a call concerning a cement truck hitting a train on Township Road 454, a few kilometres east of Highway 56. Neither passenger on the train was injured. The truck driver suffered non-life threatening injuries. "Camrose County has a large number of uncontrolled railway crossings and the RCMP would like to remind motorists that complacency when crossing railway tracks can have devastating results," said Const. Trent Kenyon. "Slow down before each railway crossing and only proceed when you have an unobstructed view of the tracks both ways from the railway crossing." A motorcycle driver wasn't as lucky in an accident in the Bashaw area. The Bashaw RCMP are investigating the fatal collision between a car and motorcycle at the intersection of Highway 12 and secondary Highway 601, east of the Village of Alix. According to police, the car turned left across the path of the west bound motorcycle, causing a collision that threw the driver of the bike from his vehicle. EMS were on the scene within minutes and the driver of the motorcycle was taken by ambulance to the Red Deer Regional Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. A passenger from the car was also taken to hospital with unknown, but non-life threatening injuries. Weather, road conditions and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in this collision. With the permission of the family, the deceased driver of the motorcycle has been identified as 55-year-old Darrell Eldon Smith of Lacombe. Bashaw RCMP Sergeant Geoff Buxcey said that the cause of the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.

Grand Caravan The right ingredients for moving people and cargo By Dan Jensen

The Dodge Grand Caravan at Camrose Chrysler is a minivan with the driving dynamics of a performance sedan – and a little bit of attitude. "Just because a driver needs the versatility of a minivan doesn't mean that the experience has to be boring," said Camrose Chrysler sales manager Denis Mercier. "You can get behind the wheel and enjoy a driving experience once never thought possible in such a functional vehicle." Redesigned

Dodge has redesigned the 2011 Grand Caravan to match its new attitude about driving. A new front fascia that sports the Dodge signature "split crosshair" grille, a new hood, and quad headlamps combine to give the face of the 2011 Grand Caravan a more aggressive look. A new, more sculpted rear fascia and liftgate, new rear "ring of fire" LED taillamps, and new Dodge badging complete the look from front to back. All-new V6 engine

From the state-of-the-art high-pressure die-cast aluminum block, VVT, sequential multipoint fuel injection and high-flow intake and exhaust ports, the all-new 3.6 litre Pentastar engine applies some of the most advanced automotive engine technologies. The result is an exceptional blend of high torque, fuel-efficiency, low emissions, and quiet ride. The only thing better than numbers like 283 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque is the engine's durability enhancing features, like an advanced oil filter system that helps eliminate oil spills and contributes to more environmentally-friendly disposal with its incinerable filter element. The engine delivers highway mileage of 7.9 litres per 100 km and 12.3 litres per 100 km city, and a segment-exclusive fuel economizer feature that alters shift patterns to help improve real-world fuel efficiency. It's also Flex Fuel capable, offering the choice of using either gasoline or ethanol (E85) fuel or any combination of the two. PHOTO CLASSIFIED ADS

A picture is worth 1,000 words!

For Want Ad service, please phone 780-672-3142 before six on Friday Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

ALLAN BOWIE would like to invite family and friends to help him celebrate his 95th birthday on Sun. Aug. 7, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Rosalind Drop-In Center. No gifts please. WELCOME BVJ! Hop the bus to Duggan Mall for the Rose City Farmers’ Market Thursday, 1 - 7:30 p.m. We’ve got something for everyone!

Steer Clear of Abbreviations Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

New plan for residents, lake users A new plan to manage human activities and maintain biodiversity will help safeguard the strip of public land surrounding Buffalo Lake in central Alberta. The Buffalo Lake Integrated Shoreland Management Plan identifies which shorelands can be used for recreation and which cannot be disturbed. An intermunicipal development plan will manage the adjacent private land. “The plan gives landowners, residents, municipalities and the government clear direction on what activities can and cannot occur on the public land and within the first 100 metres of the lake,” said Mel Knight, Minister of Sustainable Resource Development. The plan was developed through the cooperation of Sustainable Resource Development; Alberta Environment; Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation; Fisheries and Oceans Canada; the Buffalo Lake Management Team; and the Buffalo Lake Inter-municipal Development Plan Steering Committee. For more information on the plan, visit www.srd.alberta. ca and click on Lands and Forests > Shorelands > Buffalo Lake Management Plan. Information is also available on the Buffalo Lake Management Team website at www.blmt.ca.

Nature makes honey for us Submitted by Kaylyn Jackson Summer Coordinator, Camrose Wildlife and Stewardship Society

Have you ever walked through your garden and watched the bees flit back and forth from flower to flower? If so, then you’ve witnessed the phenomenon of pollination. But how can an act so simple as a bug flying from flower to flower be responsible for something as important as helping plants to reproduce? Tuesday, July 26, at 7 p.m., at the Stoney Creek Centre, come and join us for our “How Honey Happens” presentation and learn about pollination, honey production and much more. Beekeeper and educator Patty Milligan will lead everyone in a nature walk to explain pollination. After the walk everyone will get a chance to satisfy their sweet tooth and participate in honeytasting. For more information you may contact the Wildlife and Stewardship Society's summer coordinator Kaylyn Jackson at 780-672-0544 or by e-mail at kajackso@ualberta.ca

Reta Elma Lindberg

Gloria Ruth Sawai

On the ninth day of the ninth month in 1920, Reta Elma Valleau was born at home on the farm near Greenshields, Alberta. Her father Ross taught her to value home and family. Her mother Ruby Eliza taught her to value the teachings of the Bible. These values became the cornerstone of her life as a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She married her love, Verne Lindberg, on July 3, 68 years ago. She loved their farm life and was grateful to be able to raise her family in the country. Gardening, cooking for family and friends, and working with Verne on the farm were her joys and vocation. Reta’s extensive collection of photographs, news clippings and humorous anecdotes was always a source of entertainment and comfort for her and for guests in her home. She worked outside the home before she was married in New Westminster, BC. At first she baby-sat for family friends and later took a job as a maid for a professional family. Reta longed for home though, and returned to Greenshields. She worked as a clerk and as assistant post-mistress at the local grocery store. She also worked with her brother Stanley on the farm. She moved to Camrose to attend business courses at the Normal School and earned her “M-r-s.” Many years later she took a job at the Macleods store where she worked until she retired. After Verne’s passing in 2001, Reta moved to her Deer Meadows residence. She made many friends amongst residents and staff alike during her stay. Reta was well-known for the many jigsaw puzzles she completed and displayed for all to enjoy. She was very proud of her children and loved her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren dearly. She cherished the great friendship she shared with her best friend, Elvera Millang. Her sense of whimsy, her care and concern for all, and her loving spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Reta is survived by her children Janet Smith of Millet, Ken (Heidi) of Ohaton, Don (Joan) of Camrose, Calvin of Camrose, and Lila (John) Bowtell of Camrose; and daughter-in-law Lyla Lindberg of Millet; 12 grandchildren; and nine greatgrandchildren. Reta was predeceased by her husband Verne; son Garry; infant brother Lee; infant sister Mabel; one granddaughter Jodi Lindberg; and two brothers Stanley and Glenn Valleau. Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 23, 2011, at 3:00 p.m. from First Baptist Church (6406-44B Avenue, Camrose) with Rev. Dr. Patrick Schoenberger officiating. Interment followed in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, The Gideons, or a charity of one’s choice. Centennial Museum a Camrose gem By Dan Jensen

Visiting Camrose and District Centennial Museum last week I couldn't help but be reminded of Mona Sparling. One of the museum society's original and most passionate members, Ms. Sparling never missed the opportunity to promote the museum in any way she could. Her comment, repeated over and over again, was that "it was the best little museum in the province." Well Mona, based on what we have today, it still is. "It's a real gem of Camrose," said Camrose and District Centennial Museum curator and director of operations Corinna Nilson. "We get a lot of positive comments in our guest books from people. "A lot of them say that this museum has items that others do not." Camrose and District Centennial Museum's 13 buildings are home to thousands of antiques and artifacts and, some dating as far back as 1860. Visitors can view ever-changing displays in the main building, or take a walk outside and explore a log house built in 1898, a church (St. Dunstan's) that was originally located north of the village of Bittern Lake, a oneroom school (Likeness) built in 1908, a replica of a sod and log home, a blacksmith shop, RCMP machine building, the original Camrose Mail newspaper office, and a replica of the 1907 Camrose firehall. "It's a great way to take a step back in time," said Nilson. Camrose and District Centennial Museum receives about 200 artifact donations every year. "We try to display most of the items that we receive the year that we receive them," said Nilson. "We also change most of the displays every year to keep things fresh." One of this year's new displays features hide conditioners, beaded clothing decorations, a stone mortar and pestle and moccasins that were used by the Plains Cree, a people who called themselves Nehiyaw, meaning a person with four parts. The display explains that the Nehiyaw looked to the natural world to meet all their daily needs, and that every aspect of their life was integrated with spiritualism. Another new display includes a wraparound lady's hat donated by Art Reiten, a collection of hats worn by Mrs. Horte, a resident of Kingman from the 1930s and 1940s, and a 117-year-old black felt bowler hat that was worn by Vern Larson, from Saskatoon. A display of dresses includes a 1920s Georgette party dress with necklace, a black brocade dress from 1860, and a 1967 Centennial queen gown and robe that was

Camrose and District Centennial Museum's most popular treasures are a Case steam locomotive, which will be featured in the Camrose Big Valley Jamboree parade, and a pair of 1929 fire trucks which are housed in the firehall. "We have a lot of equipment on which the vice president of the museum board, Dave Fitchie, and other volunteers have worked hard to restore," said Nilson. Camrose and District Centennial Museum has tried to provide more handson opportunities in recent years so that visitors not only get to see how life was in days gone by but to actually experience it. Sandra McLay, for example, teaches the three Rs in the Likeness School during special events or special bookings. "We have a lot of older people who attended that school who come back every year to see it, and with Sandra there, it is a big hit," said Nilson. The museum also gives rides on machinery during Machinery Day, which is held the third Sunday of September. Along with the two firetrucks, the Camrose firehall at the Camrose and DisSandra McLay teaches school on special occasions. trict Centennial Museum features items from the Camrose town office (Mayor Percy East's typewriter), and barber and dentist chairs. The agricultural equipment was moved to another building earlier this year to make room for the collection of band instruments. Camrose and District Museum currently has nearly 15,000 artifacts in its paper and photos collection, and a large selection of local history books from which visitors can draw interesting snippets of information about their families or surrounding small communities. "We've been working to bring this important information up to current preservation and storage standards," said Nilson. Camrose and District Centennial Museum received 3,000 visitors last year, a number that it is on pace to exceed in 2011. "We get a lot of interest from the schools," said Nilson. "We were pretty well booked with school tours in June." Alyssa Sharp models a 1967 Centennial An early Camrose barbershop. We’ve all heard that we should try to walk 10,000 steps a day for optimum health and fi tness. What we don’t think about is how much stress and pressure that can put on our feet. As a certified reflexologist and orthotics technician for 10 years, Karen Anderson is well aware of what our feet go through on a daily basis. She says “ It is very gratifying to work on someone’s feet and help them get the relief they need for a pain free day.” With studies showing that up to 70% of back pain can be directly related to the feet, Karen has seen not only back pain but a host of other health problems including hip and knee pain, shin splints, and sciatica as well as foot problems all helped with orthotics. Anyone can come in for a consultation – a doctor’s referral is not necessary, and with Karen’s same day service, you can have a consultation in the morning and your orthotics in the afternoon. Because of her work in reflexology and orthotics, Karen is also certified in shiatsu and hot stone massage therapy and is currently becoming certifi ed as a foot health practitioner. Walking into Cathel Books on main street is a book lover’s delight. The charming window display is the fi rst feature to entice you in as it is always festively decorated with theme books of the current season. Once inside, dozens of aisles and thousands of tomes beckon you to browse… and once the perfect book is found, quiet sitting areas are provided to read or to have a cup of coffee or tea. “Our customers bring books in for sale or trade on a daily basis so we have a large variety to choose from.” says owner Pat Westergard. “ We have over 34,000 books in stock and strive to keep the quality like new." Bright, clean and very organized, the aisles of Cathel Books offer something for everyone. “Our subject matter is for all ages and covers a huge variety of topics,” notes Pat. “Westerns, romance, self help, history, children's and young adults' books or th e latest bestsellers are just a sample of what you will find in over 60 different sections in our store.” Pat and her staffalso strive for great customer service. “If there’s something we don’t have, we will try to fi nd it. We keep a list of selections our customers are looking for. It makes my day to find a book on that list." Another interesting feature of the shop is the basement that was expanded four years ago. What used to be a bowling alley in 1921 is now a unique shopping/reading area. Pat says Cathel Books has been very well received by the community in the eight years since it opened for business. “We havesuch a good time with our customers!” smiles Pat. “Camrose and area residents have given us wonderful support and we look forward to serving our customers for years to come.”

Sarah knew she had a passion for the industry but when she became a member of the Stage 1 team three years ago, she had no idea how much she would enjoy the salon and her fellow stylists. She notes, “Not many people say they go to work and have fun – but I do, every day!” One of the things that Stage 1 owner Robyn Ogonoski considers of utmost importance is for her team to stay on top of current design trends, and Sarah couldn’t agree more. “It’s so important to stay up-todate and never stop learning. I am constantly being inspired and learning new techniques, and I’m always up for a challenge!” she laughs. Bra Necessities

Jen Sarton, Health Counselor Herbal Magic

Opened less than a year and a half ago, and founded by mother-daughter duo, Connie and Kim Turre, Bra Necessities is a wonderful lingerie/sleepwear boutique that truly is comfort for your curves. Growing up, Kim describes herself as “a typical teenage girl who was very self-conscious about my body. It was always so difficult to fi nd a proper fi tting bra. When I was 15, I was introduced to the services of a professional bra fi tter and it had a profound effect on my self- confidence. Years later, I made the decision to open a high end lingerie boutique. I wanted to off er a bra fitting service along with a vast selection of styles that were currently found only in large city centers. Bra Necessities now offers the largest selection of high quality European lingerie in east central Alberta, complemented by friendly small town service.” Kim is passionate about the physical and emotional benefi ts of wearing a professionally fitted bra every day. She now shares her story with countless women and adolescent girls to help inspire, empower and encourage them to reach their full potential and realize their true beauty. She notes, “We carry an extensive selection of brands and styles – comfy pyjamas, cozy robes and easy gift giving items - and we pride ourselv es on our impeccable product knowledge. Our bra fitting service is free and customers’ sizes and favorite styles are kept on file in a confidential database so gift giving is a snap any time of year.” Kim has completed numerous courses including the Eveden Inc. Bra Fitting Seminar in Las Vegas. This allowed her to perfect her fi tting techniques from the leading supplier of full busted and full figured lingerie in the industry. She firmly states, “We don’t just sell lingerie and sleepwear. We help women feel beautiful, confident and classy - every day”. Bra Necessities also supports Camrose Women's Shelter by receiving gently used bras on their behalf. To date, Bra Necessities has received and donated about 1000 bras.

“Look great, feel great and lose weight” is the principle on which Herbal Magic guides their clientelle and health counselor Jen Sarton and owner Luisa Davidse agree with it 100%. “Luisa and I take a common sense approach to weight loss through real food, personal coaching and natural products," notes Jen. “ Our programs focus on lifestyle changes, including setting, achieving and maintaining goals.” Jen came on board three years ago when Luisa purchased the business, and with a background in both biology and psychology, Jen has an excellent understanding not only of the biomechanics of weight loss but of the stress and struggles that accompany it. In short, she's her clients' best friend! “It’s difficult seeing people struggle with self-esteem and health issues prior to achieving a healthy body weight but I know with dedicatio n, motivation and support they can get there,” she says. And Jen is there through the entire process; listening, advising and giving ongoing support. "Helping my clients (re)gain their confidence and improve their health through weight loss and watching their transformation as they reach their goals is just incredible.” With a wide variety of weight loss programs including a youth program geared for ages 12-17, a heart smart program, diabetic program, busy lifestyle program, diabetic program, and a pregnancy planning/breastfeeding program, Herbal Magic can be tailored to fi t any lifestyle. Drop-in meetings with your personal health counse lor, all natural health supplements (Health Canada compliant) and one-on-one coaching are included. Vitamins, minerals and specifi c therapy products are also available. Jen notes “Consultations are free of charge with no obligation. Arts society seeks Mandalas By Jane Cherry-Lemire City Arts Director

The Chuck MacLean Arts Centre is putting out a call for Mandalas for the third annual public show to take place from September 30th to October 7th. The show will be part of Camrose’s Alberta Arts Days which have been declared for September 30th to October 2nd this year. A committee consisting of Theo Thirsk (chair of Camrose Arts Society), Jane Cherry-Lemire (Arts Director for City of Camrose), Tracey Clark (manager for Bailey Theatre) and Shirley Damberger (MIH Consulting) has been struck to organize a celebration of the arts on these days to coincide with the nationwide celebration of the arts. This is only the fourth year for this provincial initiative. When funding became available this committee sought other community partners and applied to become a Feature Community ($20,000 towards a three-day celebration) or Host Community ($5,000 towards a minimum two-day celebration).

We are pleased to say that we were successful in being chosen as a Host Community. While this article is a call for the annual Mandala show, future articles will provide more detail on what is planned. Anyone is invited to submit a mandala, not just professional artists. As explained on the web-site ‘The Mandala Project’ “the word Mandala is from the classical Indian language of Sanskrit. Loosely translated to mean “circle,” a mandala is far more than a simple shape. It represents wholeness and often an integrated view of the world. Many people use the creation of mandalas as a meditative process focusing on what speaks to them at that moment. We often see the use of symbols as a way of expression. Mandalas can be seen in various cultures, Tibetan monks create sand mandalas that take many hours and days to complete. Each one contains symbols that are perfectly reproduced. When they are finished they hold a colourful ceremony, complete with chant-

ing as they sweep their mandala into a jar and empty it into a nearby body of water as a blessing. The action also symbolizes the cycle of life. Labyrinths are a type of mandala found in many cultures and are used as a tool for centering. Western Society has adopted the mandala in its marketing and business in the form of logos. It is no accident that many logos are round (mandalas) as they attempt to send the message of who they are and what is important to them. Most logos are created in such a way that they are personal and are recognizable. Mandalas are all around us in nature, biology, chemistry, physics and astronomy. For more information on mandalas, google mandala or go to www.mandalaproject.org for thousands of examples from all over the world. For those who wish to submit a mandala, please pick up an application form at Chuck MacLean Arts Centre. All forms of art are acceptable. Deadline to apply is September 16th.

Nine-year-old Kyle Pyefinch, left, and his mother Christine, pour themselves a slurpee at the Camrose 7-Eleven on Slurpee Day, July 11. The day marked 7-Eleven’s 42nd anniversary in Canada (84 years in total existence) and the company celebrated by giving away 466,000 free Slurpee drinks across Canada.

Danielle Smith riding in Big Valley parade By Dan Jensen Camrose and area residents will have the chance to meet Wildrose Party leader Danielle Smith after the Camrose Big Valley Parade July 28. Smith is on a three-week summer mission to bring the Wildrose Party message of change to families, business leaders and local governments all across Alberta. "After 40 years of one party rule, Albertans are ready for a change, and it is my job to convince them that the Wildrose is the best choice for that change," said Smith. "This will be a great opportunity for us to connect with Albertans one-on-one, in their communities, and talk with them about the future they want to see in our province." The Wildrose has half of its candidates in place for the next provincial

election, including Trevor Miller, who will be running under the party's banner in the Wetaskiwin-Camrose constituency. The Party has also released most of its policies and is currently in the midst of training volunteers and campaign workers. "We're taking our message of change throughout the province so we can continue to earn the trust of Albertans," said Smith. Speaking at the 2011 Wildrose annual general meeting in Calgary June 24, Smith said the Wildrose would eliminate the provincial deficit with reasonable self-discipline, self-restraint, common sense, and determination. She also stated that hospitals should be governed and managed locally, not by central planners far removed from the effects of their decisions, and that public funding should be allowed to follow

each patient to the doctor or facility of their choice. "Who owns the facility is of no concern to Alberta patients. You just want health care that works. You shouldn’t have to wait. You shouldn’t have to pay. And you shouldn’t be put on a neverending waiting list." More recently, Smith said that the government's surprise motor vehicle search fee, announced without warning in Budget 2011, shows a stark and fundamental lack of respect for the level of government closest to the taxpayers. "The current government's treatment of municipalities – and the role they play in delivering core services – borders on contemptuous," said Smith. "They have forgotten that municipal governments are duly elected by Albertans. They are partners that should be

consulted, not underlings to be ordered around." Smith, 40, has taken on a variety of roles, many of which have been high profile. After obtaining English and economics degrees from the University of Calgary, she studied public policy as an intern at the Fraser Institute. She did a stint as a trustee on the Calgary Board of Education, and served as the director of the Alberta Property Rights Initiative and the Canadian Property Rights Research Institute. She was director of provincial affairs for Alberta with the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, an editorial writer and columnist for The Calgary Herald, and host of Global Sunday, a national current affairs talk show on Global Television. She also hosted two programs on CKMX 1060 AM radio in Calgary.
