Remove the snow from this picture, eliminate the trendy name brands from the clothing worn by the above volunteers, replace the quality of the building’s downspout and imagine yourself in Kenya. This scene is intended to offer a glimpse of daily life of a Kenyan. In Kenya there are no line-ups at brightly lit stores for iPhones or the hottest toy for Christmas. In Kenya there are no people in mega-sized grocery stores closely examining baskets of fruit to ensure one or two of the grapes or strawberries at the bottom are perfect. In Kenya, a daily ritual is a hunt for water, people scraping by on inadequate amounts of moderately nutritious food and a rigorous fight for mere survival.

School board responds to racist comments

44 th

By Dan Jensen

Jim Andre’s tenure as a school trustee could be short lived. The Battle River School Division board of trustees has launched an investigation into whether it can legally force Andre to resign as a result of racist, sexist and homophobic tweets he posted on Twitter before the Oct. 21 election under the handle of hotone1963. “We want to make sure that everything is done properly and we are following the school act,” said BRSD board chair Kendall Severson. Andre told CBC News Nov. 7 that while he believes he still has the support of those who elected him, he will step down if he is asked. The board posted a statement on the BRSD website Nov. 6 noting that the comments by Andre are in no way associated with the school division. The statement added that trustees are aware elected officials are held to the high standard, and that the board is taking steps to ensure that each of its members is acting in accordance with those standards. Severson said he has been deluged by phone calls from people who are outraged by Andre’s comments. “People are very displeased is a polite way of putting it. They don’t accept this and they are shocked that this is being said in what is supposed to be a multicultural and diverse country.” Severson said the entire board has had a deer in the headlights kind of look. “To have this brought forward was a real eye opener to a lot of people. There were six new faces at the organizational meeting, some of whom had never met each other.” Andre told Canadian Press he should never have tweeted remarks and that they don’t represent his views. “I am deeply sorry for what happened,” said Andre. “I don’t want people to get an impression of me because that’s really not me. I found them funny so I just retweeted them. They’re offensive. There’s no doubt about it and it is something I should have thought about before I retweeted them.” Alberta Education Minister Jeff Johnson has indicated he is leaving it up to the board to decide if Andre should be removed from his position. BRSD trustees will be reviewing their board code of ethics policy during orientation meetings in November, with a particular emphasis on discussing how the entire board can work together to ensure the code is being upheled at all times. Trustees will also participate in social media and digital citizenship training in the very near future. Further training on embracing diversity may also be provided. The school division’s foundational belief is that everyone should be treated with dignity and respect and provided with a safe, caring, inclusive environment in which to learn and work.

Sorenson invites funding applications Crowfoot Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson is inviting local employers to apply for funding through the Canada Summer Jobs program 2014 to help create jobs for students next summer. “Every year, we try to focus on local priorities, while achieving tangible results for both students and their communities through this federal initiative,” said Sorenson. “It works in local economies throughout our large riding.” The Canada Summer Jobs initiative provides funding to not-for-profit, public-sector and small private-sector employers with 50 or fewer employees. It creates summer job opportunities for young people 15 to 30 years of age who are full-time students intending to return to their studies in the next school year. Employers can apply online at www.servicecanada.gc.ca/ csj2014 or print an application from the website. They can also get an application by visiting any Service Canada Centre. Please note that the period to apply for Canada Summer Jobs 2014 will be from December 2, 2013 to January 10, 2014. These new dates will allow employers to be notified of their application status earlier. “Not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers, and small businesses create these high-quality summer job opportunities for young people aged 15 to 30 years. These full-time students who intend to return to their studies in the next school year can return home for the summer months – and have a summer job. This is important to families in our riding and across Canada,” Sorenson concludes.

Primary Care Network conducting survey starting Nov. 12 By Colleen Lindholm, Camrose PCN

What contributes to high quality primary care? The Camrose Primary Care Network (PCN) believes asking patients directly is the best way to find out. Beginning on Nov. 12, the Camrose PCN will be asking individuals to tell us about their relationship with their family doctor as well as their experience with their family doctor’s office and the Camrose PCN.

The survey will focus on three main themes: Patient Satisfaction; Patient Experience and Patient Outcomes. Data collected from this project will provide the PCN and its team of family physicians and health care providers with baseline information to support future programming. The survey will run until Dec. 3 and interested individuals can participate online at www.camrosepcn.

com or complete the survey in hard copy at the Gemini Health Centre, Bashaw Clinic or Daysland Medical Clinic. In appreciation to those that fill out the short survey, there will be a draw for an iPad mini (just in time for Christmas). “We know the importance of a positive relationship between patients and their family doctors, who are the most responsible providers of their primary

care,” said Stacey Strilchuk, executive director of the Camrose PCN. “Over the past five years we have also seen the value of a team or network of health care providers, including nurses, pharmacists and dietitians working together with the patients’ family physicians to provide and coordinate a comprehensive range of primary care services required by each person. “This survey is about

further enhancing the patient–doctor, patient– nurse, and other health care provider relationships that have been developed and strengthened over time to offer the best possible health outcomes for each person and the community being served.” For more information regarding the primary care survey visit www.camrosepcn.com, email info@camrosepcn.com or call 780-6084927.

Rethinking Scholars and Activism

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Camrose PCN medical office assistants, from left to right, Andrea Gordon, Sarah Smith and Eryn Petiot encourage you to fill out a survey focusing on patient satisfaction, experience and outcomes. Data collected from this project will provide the PCN and its team of family physicians and health care providers with information to support future programming. A draw for an iPad mini will be made from completed entries.

Legislature Report Doug Griffiths, MLA, Battle River-Wainwright Alberta and British Columbia reach agreement on opening new markets

After officials worked through the night, Alberta Premier Alison Redford and British Columbia Premier Christy Clark today announced a framework agreement between the two provinces on moving energy resources to new markets. “A key part of our Building Alberta Plan is getting Alberta’s resources to new markets at much fairer prices so we can keep funding the programs Albertans told us matter most to them," said Alberta Premier Alison Redford. "Today’s agreement with B.C. is good news for Alberta, for British Columbia and for all Canadians. I welcome Premier Clark’s endorsement of the Canadian Energy Strategy and our shared commitment to create jobs, long-term growth and position Canada as a true global energy superpower. We look forward to continued constructive dialogue with B.C.” The framework will also see the Government of British Columbia endorse Premier Redford’s Canadian Energy Strategy. “Agreement on B.C.’s five conditions is a necessary first step before any proposals can be considered for approval." said B.C. Premier Christy Clark. "It is the way we do business in B.C. and it works. By working together with Alberta through these principles we can grow our economies, and strengthen Canada’s economy overall.” The governments of B.C. and Alberta agree that British Columbia’s conditions are intended to ensure both the responsible production of energy as well as its safe transport to new markets, giving projects the social licence to proceed. B.C.’s conditions one to four are designed to achieve both economic benefit and risk mitigation on increased shipments through B.C. They mirror Alberta’s legislated commitments on responsible energy production. Alberta and B.C. agree that only through intensive environmental review and protection, enhanced marine safeguards and First Nations support, can projects proceed. On condition five, Alberta agrees that B.C. has a right to negotiate with industry on appropriate economic benefits. Both governments agree it is not for the governments of Alberta and B.C. to negotiate these benefits. Both provinces reaffirmed that Alberta’s royalties are not on the table for negotiation. As the MLA for Battle River-Wainwright, I am always available to assist constituents. If you have any questions or concerns regarding AB-BC energy agreement or any other matter, I can be reached in my constituency office at 780-842-6177.

A few weeks ago, my colleague Alex Carpenter wrote a column in this space entitled “Celebrating Scholars and Activism” in which he decried the phenomenon of “pronouncements from influence.” Reacting to Neil Young’s comparison of the Oil Sands to Hiroshima, Alex asserted that neither celebrities like Young nor scholars like himself, should exploit the influence which graces their privileged status to make pronouncements on social and political issues which are beyond the boundaries of any expertise they possess. In arguing his case, Alex draws our attention to what he calls “credibility.” “Credibility,” he explains, is that which makes a pronouncement persuasive and likely therefore to influence people’s thought and behaviour. Pronouncements by celebrities like Neil Young possess “credibility” because they “bear the imprint of the cultural elite” to which Young and his like belong. Pronouncements by scholars possess a similar “credibility” because of the scholars’ membership in “the intellectual, institutional elite.” Celebrities, Alex implies, should not make pronouncements on social and political issues and scholars are advised to do so only if the issue at hand is within the scholar’s area of expertise. I have two objections to Alex’s reservations about pronouncements by celebrities and professors on public issues. First, I think he both flatters and underestimates his own profession when he draws comparisons between professors and celebrity entertainers. The prestige of professors is not commensurate with that of entertainers, and to imply otherwise is empty flattery. Neil Young likely is “listened to and venerated by thousands of people” as Alex claims, but hardly any scholars enjoy comparable adulation. On the other hand, professors have undergone an extensive period of mental training which, in the best of cases anyway, enables them to distinguish relevant from irrelevant data and to arrange relevant date a coherent, agreeable and responsible manner. The importance of

Second Thought

Roger Milbrandt, English, Augustana Campus, University of Alberta

this ability to the credibility of a professor’s pronouncements should not be underestimated, and this leads to my second objection to Alex’s claim. In discussing the “credibility” of pronouncements on public issues, Alex mentions only the prestige of the person making the pronouncement. But the prestige of the speaker is not the only thing that gives credibility to the speech. When a person makes a pronouncement on a public issue, we are interested of course in the status and credentials of that person. But we also pay attention to the intrinsic value of the pronouncement itself, asking for example whether it is supported by facts and whether it is reasonable and coherent. I will illustrate this with one historical and one fictitious example. If Robert Redford were to make a public pronouncement to the effect that the world was flat – using as evidence the absence of hills in his back yard – we would not revise our geography textbooks; we might, though, revise our opinion of Redford. When Ronald Regan pronounced that global warming was caused by bovine flatulence no conscience-ridden cattle farmer that I know divested himself of his herds. Many, however, began to wonder about the mental capacities of the President of the United States. In both cases the intrinsic value (or valuelessness) of the pronouncement

trumps the prestige of the person making it. A foolish statement is a foolish statement, no matter how much prestige the person making the statement happens to possess. Furthermore, in the examples I have provided, we need not be experts either in geography or environmentalism to recognize the foolishness of the statements. Alex seems to assume that university professors are best left to make statements about their own area of expertise. Two experiences of my own quarrel with this assumption. First, as a researcher I frequently encounter laughable absurdities written by experts on their areas of expertise. Expertise does not guarantee infallibility. As a teacher, though, I frequently find that non-experts (namely, my students) make shrewd and perceptive observations. The fact is that experts are sometimes wrong and non-experts are often right because reality is complex, slippery, deceptive and contemptuous of the monopolistic ambitions of experts. So, we can never say that a Neil Young or an Alex Carpenter will always be reliable when he offers his opinion on a given subject, or that he will certainly be wrong on some other. Perhaps my deepest reservation about Alex’s position is its anti-democratic implication, for it assumes that only expert opinion is of true value. But democracy, frequently disdained by the experts, is still humanity’s best bet and we have had a recent, encouraging example. When the full history of the year 2013 is finally written, it may well turn out that in September of that year the non-expert populace of England and the United States prevented the foreign policy experts of these countries from risking the detonation of a Third World War by trying to bomb Syria into happy tranquility. The English and US citizens who phoned, e-mailed and wrote to their MPs and Congresspersons were, if I may take Alex words out of their context, making “public pronouncements” on areas “outside their area of expertise.” Thank goodness they did.

Workshop on domestic violence By Dan Jensen

What are the roles of police, the crown prosecutor’s office and victim services in addressing the issue of domestic violence in Camrose? What is a protection order? How are cases of violence investigated? What is the definition of criminal harassment? Sgt. John Corbett and Const. Matthew Wilton from Camrose Police Service, Michelle Hauser from Camrose and District Victim Services, and Gordon Hatch, Crown Prosecutor, will be answering those questions and others in workshop hosted by the Family Violence Response Council at the Camrose Rotary Youth Centre from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 25. “We have a lot of local expertise in the area of family violence so we wanted to bring some of those people together to give their perspectives,” said Family Violence Response Council chair Sheralyn Dobos. “Family violence continues to have a significant impact on families in our community.” Sgt. Corbett is a 12-year Camrose Police Service member who oversees all of the investigations and calls for service that occur on his watch. He has investigated and responded to hundreds of different domestic violence incidents

and is the service’s family resource coordinator. He monitors and reviews all family violence related calls for service in the organization and sits on a provincial police advisory committee for family violence. Hauser has been the program coordinator for Camrose and District Victim Services for more than eight years, serving both Camrose Police Service and Camrose RCMP. The recent addition of service dog Lucy has expanded the ability of the unit to assist adults and children who have experienced traumatic events. Hatch has served as a prosecutor for Alberta Justice since 2005. He has been exposed to domestic violence files in criminal court, as well as through specialized training. Most of his tenure with Alberta Justice has been in communities which experience a far greater proportion of intimate partner abuse than the general population (statistically). He has become aware of the impact of domestic violence physically, emotionally and economically through firsthand accounts of countless victims and their families, allowing him to speak in an informed way about the criminal justice system’s attempts at dealing with this grave social problem.

He recognizes, though, that the criminal law is perhaps the most blunt instrument available to combat the problem, and unfortunately, one of the least impactful components of a societal approach to the problem. Wilton has been a member of Camrose Police Service for five and a half years. He began his career working patrol with involvement in numerous domestic violence related files and currently works as the crime prevention officer, serving as a link for citizens of Camrose to crime prevention/educational material. This position also includes being a liaison to several committees and boards in Camrose, including the Family Violence Response Council and the Family Violence Action Society. Wilton is also the primary forensic identification specialist for the Camrose Police Service and has received enhanced crime scene forensic training qualifying him as a fingerprint, footwear and photographic expert. He is responsible for the collection, preservation and photography of forensic evidence. The Family Violence Response Council is an interagency body that works to build awareness of family violence through education.

Four more inductees to CCHS Wall of Fame Camrose Composite High School will present Distinguished Alumus awards to Dr. John Anderson and Dan Olofson, a Distinguished Alumna award to Beth Balshaw, and a Distinguished Faculty award to Max Lindstrand at its annual Wall of Fame ceremony in the school library Nov. 15. The Camrose Composite High School Wall of Fame was started to recognize former students and teachers who have established themselves as leaders in their chosen vocations and who have made significant contributions to society, to celebrate the school's proud history, and to inspire current students to challenge themselves in their future careers and in service to others. Dr. John Anderson

Dr. John Andersen graduated from CCHS in 1990. After earning his Bachelor of Science from the University of Alberta and Doctor of Medicine from the University of Calgary, he worked as a Resident in Pediatric Medicine at both the University of Manitoba and the University of Alberta. He subsequently qualified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Developmental Pediatrics. He practices and teaches in Edmonton. The primary goal of Dr. Andersen’s academic, research, and career pursuits has been the development of improved assessment methods and treatments for children with cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is generally understood as a central motor dysfunction affecting a person’s muscle tone, posture, and movement. While there is no known cure, Dr. Andersen’s work focuses on improving the functional abilities of children with cerebral palsy, and understanding the impact of the disorder on the daily activities of affected children and their families. A keen student and engaged physician, Dr. Andersen has served in a variety of roles in his practice. Early in his career, he worked internationally in the developing nations of Guyana and Zambia. He has done extensive work at Edmonton’s Glenrose Hospital and his primary clinical responsibility is that hospital’s Medical Advisor for Advanced Rehabilitation Technologies. He shares his expertise with post-graduate students as Associate Professor in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Alberta. He has served that faculty as Adjunct Professor, Associate Professor, and Director. His research and publications have informed and advanced the practice of his colleagues, and he has served the larger medical community, locally and nationally, in a wide range of capacities. Dr. Andersen’s exemplary work with his students was formally recog-

nized when he was named the 2006 recipient of the Dr. Anne Bellamy Teaching Excellence Award. He has shown real leadership as a practitioner, researcher, and professor, and has modelled effective, compassionate mastery of his specialty to the next generation of physicians. Dr. Andersen and his wife Tara have three children, and live near Spruce Grove.

ing process. Dr. Balshaw’s professional skills and personal empathy have been of great benefit to her clientele, and have earned her an enviable reputation. When her children were young, Dr. Balshaw was very much involved as a parent volunteer in their school and extracurricular activities. She has continued that tradition with her grandchildren. Additionally, she has been active as a volunteer in her church, especially in its music program, and with the Telecare suicide prevention program. Dr. Balshaw and her husband, Jim, have three adult children, all University of Calgary graduates, and eight grandchildren.

Dan is also a member of the Camrose Sports Development Society, which owns the Camrose Kodiaks. That organization brought junior hockey and the national junior championships to Camrose, and local fans have seen former Kodiaks go on to play at the highest levels. He has also taken leadership roles in the Golf Club, the Kinsmen Club, the Masonic Lodge, and the Rotary Club of Camrose. The Rotary Four Season Environmental Park, dedicated to enhancing habitat for butterflies, hummingbirds, and all pollinators is but one legacy of his work. He was a founding member of the Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Association and took special interest in purple martins. That organization’s work was recognized by York University, which chose the local association as partner in one of only two joint projects nationally to study purple martin migration patterns. Dan and Elsie have two adult children. Quietly and without fanfare, Dan has been a leader in business, service, cultural, and environmental groups enriching our community.

into a four-year high school, and school jurisdictions from across Alberta used CCHS as a model and prototype of the four-year high school. Also during his early years at CCHS, Max was invited to serve on a provincial task force examining the most effective use of computers in education. This school was one of the earliest to adapt to the then new technology and remained a leader in that field, as in so many others. When Glen Lett retired as the school’s principal, Max was an obvious and popular successor, remaining in that position for the next 21 years until his retirement in 2008. His leadership earned real respect and popularity among students, teachers, and the wider community. Teachers were given a great deal of autonomy in their work and responded with real quality work. Students were expected to perform to a high standard, and held accountable for their choices. With few exceptions, they met and exceeded his expectations. He was quick to celebrate successes of individuals in the school community, and to compassionately support those experiencing difficulties. Max treated both professional and support staff as family. Max played no favorites and was a keen supporter of academics, of vocational studies, the sports, and the arts. During his tenure CCHS students took high honours in all these fields, and graduates of this school now enjoy careers in the professions, skilled trades, athletics, and the creative arts due to his legacy. He was instrumental in providing suitable learning opportunities for students in the Integrated Occupational and Senior Opportunity programs. Max encouraged foreign students to attend CCHS and ensured they felt welcome here. He officiated basketball at the university level and remains an active curler, playing in a weekly league with three other retired teachers. He has served his church and The Bethany group in a range of leadership capacities, and was recently elected to a third term on the City of Camrose council. Max and Alice have two adult children.

Dr. Beth Balshaw

When Dr. Beth Balshaw, then Fowler, graduated from CCHS in 1965, she entered first year university studies at Camrose Lutheran College, now Augustana. She later earned a BSC in Math at the University of Alberta. Following marriage and a move to Calgary, she added a BEd from the University of Calgary and began a teaching career. As a teacher, Dr. Balshaw became interested in what makes people, including her students, to act as they do. Combining a demanding academic and professional life with three busy children, Dr. Balshaw earned her MEd in Counseling and Family Life Education, and later her PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Calgary. She has worked as a therapist since 1988, and has had a private practice as a registered psychologist since 1993. Dr. Balshaw’s specialties include individual therapy, marriage counseling, anger management counseling, treatment for depression and anxiety, and cognitive behavioral therapy. As any high school student can tell, if something is on the internet, you can believe it. In Dr. Balshaw’s case, the website Rate My Psychologist has named her Calgary’s toprated registered psychologist. After 20 years of practice, and at the age when most people of her age are retiring, Dr. Balshaw has just committed to a further five years in her work: satisfied clients and referrals have kept her in high demand. Because psychotherapy involves a degree of risk, clients sometimes experience uncomfortable emotions as they talk about the issues that are concerning them. She is able to build trust, to put people at ease, and to help her clients in a collaborative heal-

Dan Olofson

In Dan Olofson, CCHS recognizes a man who has made great contributions to the life of the community for more than a half-century. It is appropriate that he be recognized this year, the fiftieth anniversary of CCHS, as he was in the first graduating class of the then brand new school. Before finishing high school, Dan was active in music, the arts, and local business. In 1960, he was a founding member of Xtatix, the first rock and roll band in Camrose. That group established a local tradition of live music at Jaywalkers' Jamboree. That tradition continues and now includes an annual showcase for musical and cultural groups to perform at the annual festival. The band itself is still active, and is often featured in major local charity events. The Xtatix have two generations of fans. Also while still in school, Dan began a career in retail, working part time at Max McLean’s Men’s Wear. He later purchased and still operates Duff Layton’s Men’s’ Wear. He served two terms as president of City Centre Camrose and 10 years as chair of Main Street Camrose. The refurbishment of downtown store fronts to their original historic look is due in no small part to Dan’s efforts. He also served as chair and president of the committee that restored and reopened the century-old Bailey Theatre, Alberta’s oldest, to its valued role at the centre of the community’s cultural life.

Max Lindstrand

Max Lindstrand was born and raised in the Round Hill District, where his parents farmed. It is a bit of a surprise he chose a career in education rather delivering mail for Canada Post, as he has strong rural roots. He attended school to Grade 12 at Round Hill, and competed in all the sports available. He began university studies at Camrose Lutheran College, now Augustana, and graduated with a B.Ed. from the University of Alberta. He later added a MEd from the University of Montana in Missoula. Max began his teaching career in Hay Lakes, before a transfer to New Norway as teacher and vice principal for another four years. His move to CCHS as a math teacher coincided with the addition of the Grade 9 students to the existing three year high school program. In short order, he was promoted to vice principal with primary responsibility for the junior high students. Under his leadership nearly 1,000 students were fully integrated

City opens dog off-leash area at Camrose Golf Course By Dan Jensen

The City of Camrose has opened the dog offleash area at the Camrose Golf Course for another winter. The Camrose Golf Course was designated as a dog off leash area on

a trial basis in December, 2010. A dog walkers’ trail was set out and the route marked, keeping the dogs and walkers away from the already established crosscountry ski trail route. “The golf course grounds superintendent

reported that there was no detrimental effect on the golf course condition as a result of its use as an offleash area,” said Camrose Community Services general manager Paul Nielsen. “Dogs, their faithful masters, and cross-country

skiers co-existed well with only one conflict incident reported for the entire winter.” The City of Camrose is embarking on an off-leash area assessment process with the end goal being the designation of a more user

friendly off-leash area that will be attractive to dogs and owners alike. Anyone wishing to have updates and information as this process moves forward is encouraged to visit the City of Camrose web page.

Armena 4-H Beef Club report By Ashley Ganske

On Saturday, November 2, Armena Beef 4-H Club had it’s Weigh-In, with the average weight of the steers being 687 lbs. This year we have a total of 12 steer projects, three carcass projects, two heifer projects, as well as cleaver and novice projects. It was great to meet our new members and our cleaver and novice kids! In addition to

weighing, we vaccinated all the projects and tattooed the heifers. A big thank you goes out to Ken and Verny Cox for hosting our weigh in at their wonderful handling facility. Some of our club members were lucky to attend the 4-H family day at the 40th annual Farmfair on Nov. 9. A few of the sessions included livestock judging, photography, genomics, candy bouquet workshop and

a DNA necklace clinic and everybody seemed to have a great time. Of course “4-H” is synonymous with food, so we were fed a great pizza lunch sponsored by Co-op. Our next club meeting will be on Nov. 13 at the Scandia Lutheran Church in Armena. If anyone is still interested in joining our fabulous club call Kim at 780-672-8987 before Dec. 1.

The comments made by our Battle River School Division “trustee” James Andre are not acceptable. We must denounce them and act so that not only will they not be repeated by others, but so that the harm they are doing be undone. Andre is an elected public official entrusted (hence trustee) with the education of children across our city and counties and with working on the population’s behalf with the school division. He cannot carry on in this position. As a public figure, by re-tweeting racist, sexist and homophobic comments, as well as hateful comments, without condemning them, he is taking them on as his own and he must be held accountable for them. A person cannot follow “The Funny Racist” on Twitter and not hold racist views. In addition, as our representative, he is making public statements on our behalf. I cannot let him say such hateful things in my name as what he continued to say when running for office. Andre displays first, a lack of respect for the people with whom he works at the school division. He cannot be trusted to engage fruitfully with the school division employees with whom he is supposed to work. Of course, the school board cannot remove a trustee simply because they cannot work well together. Yet, as a representative of the population, he must be able to speak and act on our behalf in an effective manner, and we must make it be known that we want him to do what he can to respect those with whom he is to work. However, I do not believe he is able to do so and I am past appealing to his good will. Andre also displays a dangerous disdain, lack of respect, and hatred for some of his own constituents and for large groups of human beings. He cannot be said to represent the population when he separates himself from them in this manner. He cannot work in my name or on my behalf: I’m francophone, like many parents in the area and children who attend École Sifton in Camrose, and I can’t trust

someone who calls me names in public. I can only imagine that others who are targeted by his even more hateful comments feel even more strongly that he cannot speak for them, or be responsible for their children’s education. In addition, James Andre is showing himself to be irresponsible and unworthy of our trust and support. Andre is not fit and cannot be trusted to oversee what the children will learn about differences in race and religion, or about horrible historical events like the Holocaust. These comments are not only hateful, they take away the dignity of human beings and incite emotional and physical violence. In school, children must learn the truth about social problems and historical events and they must learn that intolerance, hatred, violence, murder and genocide are nothing to joke about, ever, in any situation. This man cannot – is not able, should not be allowed to – oversee such an education. As a political studies professor, I must remind the public that school trustees can be sued personally for “acting in a discriminatory manner” and for “acting in bad faith.” It’s up to citizens to form their opinion and to the courts to form a judgment on the matter. The local school board also has its own code of conduct and can decide to disqualify trustees. At the very least, an investigation into these comments and their bearings on James Andre’s capacity to work as a trustee must be launched by all proper authorities. As a citizen of Camrose who will soon send his daughter to the system overseen by the Battle River School Division, I must express my personal opinion that James Andre must be removed from his position, unless he has the decency to step down first, which is the only respectable course of action for him at present. I personally believe that he has acted in a discriminatory manner, and that it is not possible to make the comments he has made in good faith, thinking they would be good for the public. As citizens, we must ask him to step down and let him know that he cannot act on our behalf, that he does not have our trust. Please share your feelings on the matter with others in the Camrose and Battle River areas, and throughout Alberta. Please write to the school board, to the mayor, to the Minister, and to the newspapers, and to Andre himself. Dr. Jérôme Melançon Camrose, Sessional lecturer in political studies, University of Alberta Augustana Campus

Cancer stories to be shared Nov. 16 As part of the yearlong Living Your Best Life with Cancer and Beyond Workshop Series in partnership with Calgary Wellspring, the Camrose PCN is very pleased to offer the Story Telling Workshop on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Edgeworth Centre. The afternoon workshop which will run from 1 to 4 p.m., is designed for people living with cancer, their family and significant caregivers. Stories do not live in books, they live in us. Our stories are more vital than any of the factual information about our lives. Stories live on the breath, in the beat of the heart, in the exquisite rise and fall of the human voice. Join storyteller and harpist Jeff Stockton for a playful and uplifting one day workshop. Explore the power of stories through open ended reflection and artistic response. Listen for and simply craft a personal story that needs to be shared. Delight,

laugh and play with simple improv games – the tools storytellers have always used to bring stories to life. Relax and feel safe with an audience. Celebrate the fact that you have been telling stories your entire lifetime. Be truly nourished by stories of others. Much has been written about the mental, emotional and spiritual benefits of storytelling. In whatever medium or measure it unfolds, storytelling is a healing art that connects people, expands views and promotes understanding, compassion and tolerance. In these extraordinary sessions of sharing and bearing witness to the experiences of fellow members, gifts of gratitude, grace and healing abound. Cost to attend is free, but space is limited. Augustana drama presents Love's Labour's Lost By Murray Green

The University of Alberta, Augustana Campus drama department is presenting a William Shakespeare classic Love’s Labour’s Lost for six showings in November. The romantic comedy is directed by Kevin Sutley and features 18 students in the play that has been slightly adapted to suit modern times. "We chose one of Shakespeare's early works because it had lots of good parts for men and women. It's comic and we thought it would be fun to do," said Kevin. "The characters are age appropriate and it is a good script for our purposes. It has 16 to 18 characters, so it is a good play to get more students involved on stage." Third-year student Maddy Goodman reflects on her character Rosaline in the play. "She is one of the princess' ladies in waiting. I really like this character because she is very sassy, witty and mean. It's a lot of fun to play," she said. "The biggest challenge in this play, because the ladies are so sarcastic towards all of the men and they like to think they don't like any of that, is finding that balance between the scorn for Berowne and the good feelings for him. It is a fine and fun balance to find." The role of Rosaline has put fun into the production. "Some past roles have been doomy and gloomy, so it is really fun to play characters that are comedic. We dance and play tag. I find Shakespeare is easier because the lines are so rich and the language almost does the work for you. If you say your lines

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Rosaline (Maddy Goodman) and Berowne (Philip Hackborn) express their love for each other in a comedy scene of William Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost. The classic love story will be told at the Augustana theatre Nov. 14 to 16 and Nov. 21 to 23.

properly, you are conveying so much meaning." Philip Hackborn portrays Berowne. "Berowne is one of the four lords who swear off love, romance, food and sleep for the sake of studying. They quickly realize how big of a mistake that was. But, Berowne always knew it was a bad mistake and that's why I like him a lot," said Philip. "He likes to have fun with everybody. He likes to ridicule

people. It is a big challenge, but a lot of fun for me too," he added. "Berowne is so multifaceted and he has so many places he needs to go. It has been a great learning experience." The role has expanded Philip's knowledge as well. "We are young and in love and play around with each other a lot. Sometimes as a student we are too busy to do that. We get to fool around,

but are still grounded in reality," he added. "It is a lot for me, but you get this amazing feeling when you figure everything out. It's a great feeling when you find that last thing you were looking for to put it all together." The pledge to study includes a vow to avoid any contact with women until four beautiful ladies arrive on the scene. For the men, it is love

at first sight; for the women, these lords are just playing games. Add a cast of zany characters like an overly passionate Spaniard, a dull witted constable, a sexy milkmaid, a pair of long-winded academics and a clown and the fun begins. "The way the world is now, people could use a comedy to have some fun. It is Shakespeare and it is hard to wrap yourself around the thick, dense poetic language. A lot of the words are the same, but some meant something different back then (about 1590s)," said Kevin. "Our students are learning it is not just about the words, but how it is said and how it feels when you hear it." Being involved in a Shakespeare play is a whole new level for actors. "To get on stage and bring the language to life is a challenge, but it is also what they were meant for. They were not meant for poring over in the classroom, they were meant for the stage," continued Kevin. "We have drama students who are studying theatre and it is a great opportunity to get a lot of them on stage. It's a good experience that never gets old." Professional set painters were brought in to create a backdrop to fit the play. The shows run from Thursday to Saturday on Nov. 14 to 16 and 21 to 23 beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Augustana Theatre Centre. Tickets (available only at the door starting at 7 p.m.) are $15 (general admission) and $5 (students).

Tribute show at Bailey honours the late Lyndy Olson By Laurel Nadon Special to the Booster

A local man who was known for spreading the magic of music and laughter will be honoured with a tribute show celebrating his life later this month at the Bailey Theatre. Lyndon “Lyndy” Olson from New Norway passed away in March at the age of 76, and was renowned locally for his classical guitar playing, performing annually at Jaywalker’s Jamboree as well as special functions. He also gained many friends over the years from his 42-year career as chief engineer at 790 CFCW, where he combined his love for radio and electronics, and was a lifelong member of Messiah Lutheran Church. The Bailey Buckaroos will perform at the Lyndon Olson Tribute Show on Sunday, Nov. 17, an event that Lyndy’s nephew Stephen Olson hopes will draw a large crowd. “Music and humour are really magical things that can draw people in. Lyndy had both of those things on and off the stage,” Olson said, adding that he hopes the show will help people to

grieve for all of their loved ones who have passed on. “The process of putting on the show brings emotions to the surface, and that to me is what a memorial is supposed to do.” Olson added that his uncle inspired him early in life to take an interest in guitar, showing him a few chords at Christmas in 1991. He went on to earn a classical guitar degree, teach guitar classes, and have the instrument become a life-long passion. “Having a male role model who recognized my gifts was a key moment,” Olson said. “When I took

up guitar, he always made time to meet with me. For a male teenager, it’s those mentoring relationships with men that are really special.” Lyndy also mentored him on the Atkins-Travis style of guitar playing, which involves playing with the fingers of your right hand. “Lyndy said the guitar is like a mini orchestra. You can play a bass part, melody and chords,” Olson explained. “Not many people play this way. He gave me the desire for this special skill.” It’s this unique style of playing that will be show-

cased at the tribute show, with several Chet Atkins and Merle Travis songs to be performed. The Bailey Buckaroos are a cowboy variety show with a rotating cast of Camrosians who play monthly at the Bailey Theatre and have earned a large fan base. Also performing at the tribute show will be Stephen Olson on lead guitar and his brother Leif Olson on drums. The event was co-organized by Cory Vanderjagt and will be hosted by Lyndy’s longtime friend Ken Grambo. “Lyndy was a great friend of mine. It’s special to pay tribute to his memory, he had such an effect on people,” Grambo said. “I just loved him. I’m happy to be involved and deliberately remembering him.” Grambo first met Lyndy in the early 1980s through family friends while pastoring in Brooks. He said that the two things that stood out about Lyndy were his love for music and Norwegian humour. “Every time we met, even in the hospital, he had something humourous to give me,” Grambo said. “We had chuckles and laughter right up until his last day. From his deathbed, he said

to me ‘I am totally at peace with God’. That’s something to really celebrate.” He invites family and friends to purposefully remember Lyndy at the tribute show and lift up everything he stood for. “He was a delightful guy and very talented in a lot of ways,” Grambo said, noting that Lyndy’s hobbies included being a ham radio operator, repairing antiques and creating miniature steam engines. “It will be a time when I’m sure people will both laugh and cry.” Lyndy’s long-time friend Rudy Famulak will play the fiddle at the show. Famulak was part of the CFCW show band The Western Five when he met Lyndy in 1954. “He had a really keen ear for music,” Famulak said. “Lyndy liked music that was a challenge.” He added that the tribute show will be a nice way to recognize Lyndy’s achievements in the community, such as getting the radio station running. The tribute show begins at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17. Tickets are available at the box office or online at baileytheatre.com.

New owners take possession of Zetsen Charity Home By Dan Jensen

Zetsen Master Builders presented the keys to its 2013 charity home to owners Marc Cossette and Heather Jackson Oct. 23. “It’s a brand new model,” said Zetsen Master Builders coowner Garry Zetsen. “Nobody else has a home like it.” The 2,186 square foot two storey is located in Creekview subdivision at 3323-52B Avenue, only steps away from the City nature trail. A The kitchen boasts plenty of maple cabinets and a large work island with granite countertops, while the dining area has a door leading to an oversized exterior deck. The upstairs master bedroom has a walk-in closet and a five-piece ensuite, including a tub and separate shower. Zetsen Master Builders built the charity home with the support of local contractors, and suppliers who donated materials and labour as a way of reducing the cost of construction and maximizing the amount that could be donated to the Battle River Community Foundation upon the final sale. The donated amount will be used by the Foundation to establish endowments to support the Reading University and Learning Together programs, as well as Camrose Minor Sports Association. This is the fourth charity home project undertaken by Zetsen Master Builders. Previous builds supported The Bethany Group, St. Mary’s Hospital’s CT scanner and Centra Cam.

Vikings beat NAIT in critical game By Murray Green

Despite being out shot 57-26, the Augustana Vikings defeated the Ooks 4-3 in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference action in Edmonton Nov. 1. For the second straight game Augustana received great goaltending to defeat NAIT. “We have a lot of confidence in our goalies, no matter who is net. Both Joel Danyluk and Andy Williams give us a chance to win every game,” said forward Dane Bonish, who missed most of the early part of the season. “We can play with ease and play our game knowing that our goalies will be there for us. We play tough in the d-zone and let them take the outside shot, while we take the middle away.” This time it was Andy’s turn to come up big. He stopped 54 of the 57 shots directed his way. “We have been really working hard in practice and things have been falling in the right place for me,” said Dane, who has six goals and 10 points in only four games. “I’m not used to this and it’s new to me. I have pretty good linemates to play with (Kenny Bradley and Matt Foster) and they make it easy for me. Their puck control is pretty good, so I find open spots for them to pass to.” Dane admits the wins against NAIT were huge. “The shots were onesided, but the shots looked worse then what it was. It gives us confidence to beat one of the top teams because we are one of the top teams too,” said Dane. Dane Bonish, Scott Aucoin, Kenny Bradley and Devin Hobbs garnered even strength tallies to provide enough offence to grab two points to remain in third place in the standings. With two ties against SAIT and two victories over NAIT, the Vikings know which team they have to beat. “Losing two one goal games at the start of the season against Red Deer was heartbreaking. We are eager to play them again and get some of those points back. We want some revenge,” said Dane. The Vikings invite Portage for a game on Nov. 16 after a week break from league action. “They play us tough and we have to be ready. We lost to MacEwan and the team learned a lesson,” said Dane. “It’s an eye opener and we took it out on NAIT. We have to make sure we win these games before we look at Red Deer.”

Lil Bohmer Lily “Lil” Bohmer of Daysland, formerly of Bawlf, passed away on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at the age of 86 years. Lily Loken was born in the family farmhouse northeast of Bawlf on January 15, 1927. Her parents, Ole and Karen, were homesteaders who had earlier emigrated from Norway. Lil attended school at Scandia, Ryley, Bawlf as well as Camrose Lutheran College and the University of Alberta where she received her Wartime Teacher Certificate in 1946. She taught school at the Scandia one-room schoolhouse from 1946 to 1948 and in Daysland from 1948 to 1949. Kore and Lil were married on July 31, 1949 and were blessed with two children, Calvin Rolfe (1952) and Brenda Lea (1957). Together, they operated a mixed farm of cattle, hogs, chickens and grain. Lil also worked off the farm for the Village of Bawlf (1967-1978) and Ankerton Gas Co-op (1973-1989). Lil and Kore did some unique things together. They were longtime members of the Camrose Rifle and Revolver Club. Lil won several national small bore rifle championships as well as regional and local trapshooting events. Lil and Kore were also members of the Rose City Amateur Radio Club. (To her ham radio friends, VE6 LIL is now a silent key.) In their retirement years, they enjoyed numerous motor biking trips on their Harley. Over the years, Lil was involved in several organizations including Bawlf Lutheran Church Women, National Lutheran Church Women (president for one year), Home and School Association, Curling Club, Ankerton Gas Board, Village of Bawlf Cemetery Committee, Ecumenical Services Committee, Historical Society, Seniors’ Club, The Bethany Group Board (1979-1990) and served as Hastings Lake Lutheran Bible Camp Treasurer. For many years, she also acted as Bawlf’s unofficial ‘welcome wagon lady’. In 1990, Lil was humbly honoured with the Bawlf & District Lions Club Citizen of the Year Award. In 1991, Lil and Kore moved from the farm and lived in Bawlf until February 2012 when they moved to Providence Place in Daysland. In February 2013, Lil moved to Bethany Meadows Long Term Care in Camrose. Lil passed away peacefully in Maple Cottage at Bethany Meadows on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at the age of 86 years. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Kore; daughter Brenda; sisters Helga Jacobs and Ella (Edward) Thompson; daughterin-law Jan Proctor; numerous nieces and nephews; and many good friends. Lil was predeceased by her son Calvin; two brothers Gulbrand and Edward; and son-in-law Brian Cassidy. The family is very grateful for the compassionate care provided by the staff members of St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose, Daysland Hospital and Bethany Meadows in Camrose. ~ Blessed be her memory ~ A funeral service was held on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 2:00 p.m., at Bawlf Lutheran Church with Rev. Edward “Ed” Adam Noullett

Michael Nasichuk

Ed was born on November 8, 1928 to parents John and Amelia Noullett, north of Bawlf. Ed was the second youngest of nine children. Ed passed away on October 2, 2013 at St. Mary’s Hospital at the age of 85 years. Ed attended school at Oak Park. At an early age, he began working on the home farm and for surrounding farmers. He then worked on the rigs until finding employment at the steel plant in Camrose. Ed remained at the steel plant until his retirement. Ed enjoyed sports, especially watching curling and his favorite baseball team, the Blue Jays. His presence will be missed by family and friends. Ed loved to dance and was disappointed when knee surgery took him off the floor. Ed enjoyed a good game of crib with anyone who was willing to take him on. This included nieces, nephews and neighborhood kids. Ed and May liked to camp, fish, and took pride in their abundant garden. Nothing pleased Uncle Ed more than his annual garage sale. Ed had a knack for turning over items at his sales, always making a few dollars. Ha ha. Ed was committed to his Catholic faith, being a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. Ed always helped out at the Knights of Columbus breakfasts which, to him, were the best. Ed was a member of AA for 38 years. He took pride in his sobriety and was a mentor to many. Ed made many friendships there that lasted his lifetime. Ed enjoyed large family gatherings where there was always good food and company. We all remember Ed asking the young ones, “Can you say Kapusta?” Ed and May enjoyed company, always welcoming family and friends to their home. In 2011, they moved to Sunrise Village – there staff and neighbors were like family. Ed was a devoted partner to May. He was a good uncle to his nieces and nephews. Left to mourn his passing his lifelong partner May; sisters Isabelle Lang and Louise (Gunner) Carlson; nieces, nephews, extended family, cousins and his many friends. Ed was predeceased by his parents John and Amelia; sister Margaret; brothers Joe (Gladys), Jerry (Jean), Anton (Amanda), John, and Leo; as well as brothers-in-law Leander and Cyril. His presence will be missed by family and friends. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 8, 2013 from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Larry Pederson as celebrant. Inurnment has taken place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to St. Mary’s Hospital, S.T.A.R.S., or to the charity of one’s choice. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com. We, the family of Ed Noullett, with heartfelt gratitude, thank our clergy, our friends and our loved ones who in any way helped us with Ed’s funeral service and evening prayers. Ed would have been so very proud of his pallbearers and honored by his fellow Knights of Columbus. Thank you to all who prepared goodies at prayers and our delicious lunch after Ed’s service. The expertise and compassion delivered to us from everyone at Burgar Funeral Home has been sincerely cherished. It has been comforting to receive flowers and cards from so many thoughtful friends and family. The many monetary donations in Ed’s memory have been distributed and will be put to good use. We thank each of you for every gesture and every bit of support and encouragement. Without your hand to hold onto, this journey would have been far more difficult. We shall cherish Ed’s memory and let it live on. – Ed’s Family

Michael Nasichuk was born on January 27, 1926, the only child of Alex and Effie Nasichuk. They lived in Edmonton until 1931 when they bought their farm at Ministik. Michael attended Ministik School, his teacher Grace Campbell taught him the English language. He finished his grade nine with the same teacher who was then Mrs. Grace Swabey. He hauled logs to be sawed into lumber and helped his dad build the house that he and his wife Violet ended up living in until 2010. Michael married Violet Waters on June 21, 1951. They resided in Edmonton for three years, where he was employed at the Imperial Oil Refinery making $ 50.00 a week. Michael’s dad passed away on October 15, 1954. It was then that Michael and Violet moved to Ministik and took over his dad’s Farm. In 1967, Michael started driving a school bus and, in 1977, joined the South Cooking Lake Fire Department. He was diagnosed with cancer in 1982 and, after suffering a heart attack in 1987, he was forced to retire. They rented out the farmland and enjoyed living on this place until September of 2010, when they moved into Tofield Lodge. Michael was predeceased by his wife Violet in September 2010. Michael passed away on November 4, 2013 in Tofield Hospital at the age of 87 years. A funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 9, 2013 at Tofield United Church. Even if you don’t recognize the name Bill Durst, you have heard him play or listened to his songs. The blues and rock legend began recording blues songs in the early 1970s and then took a break to slide into the rock scene as the best ZZ Top cover band. Durst has long been compared to the best guitar player/singer/entertainers anywhere in the world. His Western Canadian tour includes a stop in Camrose on Nov. 16 at the Alice Hotel in the Rose City Roots Music Society series. Bill has written and recorded over 100 songs on 10 albums, including seven charted Canadian radio hits. After the early success of his band Thundermug in North America and Europe, Bill was acclaimed as one of the top songwriters in Canada, signing with CBS (now Sony) Publishing, and releasing his first two solo albums in 1984 and 1989. In between these two albums, as a side gig, Bill played in “the biggest bar band in Canada” Tres Hombres, a ZZ Top clone band. In 1994 Bill co-wrote, produced, sang and played guitar on the CD Who’s Running My World, released under the Thundermug name, which received 42 continuous weeks of nationally charted radio airplay and spawned three hit singles in Canada. Bill has opened for Aerosmith, Rush, Bob Seger, The Yardbirds, Sly and The Family Stone, George Thorogood, Bad Company, Jeff Healey, Edgar Winter Group, The Tubes, David Clayton Thomas and Savoy Brown across North America and Europe. When you see Bill play or listen to his CDs, you are in for a treat. He is a world class guitar player, singer, and entertainer. He is a member of the Jack Richardson Hall of Fame, was named the London Music Awards Blues/R and B Artist of the Year in 2012, awarded the Best Live Canadian Blues Album in 2012 and The Great Willy Mammoth CD was voted one of the Top 20 Canadian Blues Albums of 2011. Next in the Roots series is David Myles, who will be playing at the Bailey Theatre on Nov. 28.

CKS hosts junior high volleyball tournament By Murray Green The Bawlf Junior High School girls needed three games to beat Charlie Killam School Team 2 in the final of the volleyball tournament held in Camrose Nov. 1 and 2. The results of the tournament after the round robin of each pool had CKS1 in first place in pool A with Tofield in second. In pool B, Bawlf came in first and CKS2 placed second. In the semifinals, CKS2 defeated CKS1 in three games to advance, while Bawlf eliminated Tofield in three games. That set up the rematch between CKS2 and Bawlf. On the boys’ side, New Norway finished first and CKS1 was second in pool A. Bawlf and CKS2 were first and second in pool B. New Norway knocked out CKS2 in two straight games in the one semifinal and Bawlf ousted CKS1 in the other match. New Norway captured the tourney by beating Bawlf in two games.

CCHS senior boys end regular season in Ponoka By Murray Green

Murray Green, Camrose Booster

Camrose Composite High School Trojans’ boy’s team delivers a power shot to the Wetaskiwin Sabres in tournament action on Nov. 1. Although Wetaskiwin won the match, CCHS will likely have another match against their rivals in the zone playoffs on Nov. 23.

The Camrose Composite High School Trojans senior boys’ volleyball team will wrap up the regular season on Nov. 13 in Ponoka. The first place Ponoka Broncs are battling with CACHS (Central Alberta Catholic High School) and Camrose for the right to host the zone tournament. Wetaskiwin, a team that beat CCHS in the local tournament, is also strong. “There is only one berth this year for provincials for the boys. It is a tight contest with four out of the five teams that could win. That includes Camrose,” said CCHS volleyball coach Graeme Thain. The five-team zone playoffs are scheduled for Nov. 23 to determine which school advances to provincials. CCHS beat both Ponoka and CACHS in league play, but lost to Wetaskiwin in three close games. The senior girls end the season in Innisfail

on Nov. 14, prior to the zone tournament on Nov. 23. “The girls will be travelling to zones this year and the host is yet to be determined. Six out of the eight teams that competed in league go to zones,” said Graeme. “There are two provincial berths for our zone this year.” Own tournament

Both the senior girls and boys placed fourth in the round robin portion of the CCHS tournament on Nov. 1 and 2. “The tournament went well and it is a very competitive tournament. The girls played Beaverlodge in their quarter-final and lost the best of three match in the final game,” said coach Graeme. Beaverlodge lost the final to St. Joe’s from Grande Prairie. Tanner MacMaster of the Camrose Kodiaks made the roster of the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s (CJHL) annual Prospects Games. He played in the two game series in Digby and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, on Nov. 8 and 9. MacMaster tried out for the World Junior Challenge,

but was asked to play in the Prospects Games instead. “It worked out better for him because this way he will be watched by more scouts and will play with and against draft eligible players,” said Kodiaks coach and general manager Boris Rybalka. “Both Team West and Team East had about 19 of the best players for the draft, so per-

sonally, the Prospects Games are the best place for MacMaster.” The CJHL Prospects Games were created to showcase the top NHL prospects. The games feature players from the five western leagues competing against players from the five eastern leagues. Player selection for the annual CJHL Prospects Games is

a joint initiative of the CJHL and NHL Central Scouting. Luke Pierce of the Merritt Centennials (BCHL) led Team West as the head coach. “I’m very excited to work with this group of young men this weekend,” said Pierce prior to the tournament. “These players have a tremendous opportunity to showcase themselves and represent

their region with pride. I look forward to sharing this experience with them, and helping them maximize their efforts in the event.” MacMaster is currently leading the Camrose Kodiaks in points this season even though he has missed games to attend Hockey Canada camps.

Bill 28 tabled By Dan Jensen

The Government of Alberta tabled Bill 28, the Modernizing Regional Governance Act, Oct. 28. “Our caucus met and had the chance to carefully consider initial feedback from mayors, reeves and councillors,” said Premier Alison Redford. Government caucus has decided that the Minister of Municipal Affairs needs to strike a task force with the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) and the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties (AAMDC) to ensure meaningful consultation on the bill and its objectives. Caucus has also decided to include an amendment to ensure a formal appeal process for municipalities. Given where Bill 28 is at in the legislative process, Redford believes the time is right to consult with municipal leaders to ensure the bill properly allows communities to work together, while maintaining local autonomy for the betterment of the people they serve. “Partnerships between our cities, towns and counties are part of what makes our great province even better,” said the Premier. “Whether it’s collaboration on projects like rural water treatment facilities or regional transportation plans, we want to ensure municipalities have the tools they need to continue developing effective partnerships – when and where they choose to. Alberta has eight years of experience in building regional partnerships and we will take the opportunity to learn from these. Alberta values the partnership with municipal leaders and I’m excited about the work ahead so we can keep building an even stronger Alberta.”

Jeep Cherokee

John Wigston By Dan Jensen

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee at Camrose Chrysler meets every road and trail with a strength of character that delivers ultimate all-weather conditions. "It's engineered to excel on any terrain with sophisticated, efficient skill," said Camrose Chrysler sales manager Denis Mercier. Traction system Jeep Cherokee was able to earn the trail rated badge by successfully passing tests for traction (maintaining controlled forward motion on snowy back roads), articulation (when one or more wheels are elevated the Jeep 4x4 system helps the other wheels maintain ground clearance longer), maneuverability, ground clearance, and water fording. A Jeep Selec-Train traction system with up to five sure-footed modes: Auto, Snow, Sport, Sand/Mud and available Rock. Snow adjusts for ultimate performance over ice-covered roads by maximizing vehicle stability and minimizing oversteer. Major systems auto-engaged and managed in this mode include antilock brakes and traction control. Sand/Mud maximixes low-speed traction by allowing additional wheel slip via specifically tuned chassis controls, differential and transmission ratios

that are geared to successfully tackle snow and mud. Sport is the mode for those who feel like having a little more fun on winding country roads. Rock (available) delivers trail-rated 4WD Low capability thanks to its rear-differential locking element. This permits serious off-road maneuvering, allowing you to crawl over rugged terrain at appropriately safe speeds. Efficient and powerful Jeep Cherokee's classexclusive nine-speed automatic transmission is all about driving comfort, refinement, and efficiency. Shift modes are determined by intelligent software that monitors engine torque as well as kick-down, acceleration and road grade changes. The 2.4 litre Tigershark Multiar I-4 engine delivers impressive fuel economy – as low as 6.4 litres per 100 km highway – and arrives as standard issue in the allnew 2014 Cherokee. From its fully isolated aluminum head cover with an integrated oil separation system to its high-pressure, diecast aluminum block, the new Tigershark engine was engineered to deliver a quiet and refined ride. Plus, for those with dreams of heading for aggressive off-road destinations, it takes its 184

horsepower and 171 lb.-ft. of torque and crushes it down to a boulder-pounding crawl ratio of 56:1 when paired with the Jeep Active Drive Lock 4WD system on the Trail Rated Cherokee Trailhawk. The 3.2 litre Pentastar VVT engine is engineered for those who require efficient performance combined with strong muscle. Demanding drivers will appreciate its 271 hp, 239 lb.-ft. of torque and fuel efficiency as low as 7.0 litres per 100 km. Towing capacity for Jeep Cherokee with the 2.4 and 3.2 litre engines is 907 kg. The towing capacity for the 3.2 litre engine with the Trailer Tow Group is 2,041 kg. Interior Every sculpted inch of the all-new Jeep Cherokee interior has been thoughtfully designed to offer versatile convenience and absolute beauty. Choose from five luxurious interiors offered in sumptuous Nappa leather-faced trim or premium cloth. Soft-touch surfaces are always within reach, adding even more to Cherokee's upscale appeal. Options abound, including heated and ventilated front seating for added warmth and cooling, and a heated steering wheel for welcome

relief in the cold of winter. Choose from the available Cold Weather Group that packages chill-ending features together for one-stop shopping. When the temp takes a dive you'll stay safe and warm with the Cold Weather Group and its bundle of nicely packaged features. The remote start lets you preheat or precool the cabin. The windshield wiper de-icer helps maintain a clear view of the road ahead. The heated leather-wrapped steering wheel and heated front seats work to take the chill away, and all-weather floor mats offer protection from slushy footwear. Heated outside mirrors are also included. Convenience meets utility with a centre console that bears two cup holders that accept 355-ml cans and 1.5 litre bottles. Front-seat passengers access a sidesaddle console cubby that can hold books and tablets. When the entire rear bench seat is folded you have a nearly flat surface and approximately 1,554 litres of room. Cherokee can easily be configured to your liking, allowing you to haul luggage, boxes, golf clubs, ski equipment and so much more. An optional wireless charging pad is concealed within the centre console.

Nearby, an integrated phone docking station and USB, SD auxiliary input and power port outlets give Cherokee the tech-savvy leading edge. With the award-winning and intuitive UConnect multimedia centre, you're always connected, informed and entertained. You can also use your voice to control nearly every feature hands free with the latest available voice recognition technology. Safety A vehicle-wide network of safety sensors helps maintain vehicle control, providing instant aid should they detect you are veering off your intended path. The Rain Brake Support system automatically helps maintain optimal braking by keeping brake rotors dry in wet conditions. Forward collision warning with mitigation features radar sensors which detect when Cherokee may be approaching another vehicle too rapidly and send an audible and visual alert to the driver, along with a brake jerk, if the driver does not react in time. You can see the new Jeep Cherokee at Camrose Chrysler on Highway 13 east, Camrose. Phone 780-6722476 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

The Camrose Kodiaks tamed the Whitecourt Wolverines with a 4-0 shut out on Nov. 2. Goalie Devin McDonald made all 35 saves on shots he faced in the contest. Whitecourt out-shot the Kodiaks 35-25, but McDonald held his ground with 16 saves in the second period. After a scoreless opening frame, Camrose counted twice in the second with Nelson Gadoury and Quinn Brown collecting the markers. Less than a minute into the third, Luc Vandale added another tally and then Connor Mailey closed out the scoring. “We were able to score on our opportunities and we played better defensively. Everyone bought in and we played better as a collective group,” said forward Jody Sick. The result in Grande Prairie was the opposite. The Storm blanked Camrose 3-0 on Nov. 1. “We had a few breakdowns defensively and we improved and had a good game in the second game (against Whitecourt),” said Jody. “For a while there we were in a slump, but know we are playing better. We have some important games against south teams now and it would be good to put together a string of wins. Once we get on a roll our confidence will be back. I know we could win 10 in a row once that happens.” Jody said the players have figured it out. “We need to have everyone playing hard together as a unit. When all of our guys are playing together, we are a good team. We can be successful if everyone buys in. We need to pay attention to details, listen to the coaches and work hard. If we do that, everything should work out.” After a scoreless first, it was Grande Prairie that added two tallies and capped it off with a goal in the third. Matt Zentner stopped 28 of the 31 shots directed at him. Grande Prairie outshot the Kodiaks 31-21. “It doesn’t matter who is in net because we have confidence in both goalies. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.
