As the sun rises over Tailem Bend next Friday morning, all eyes will be on the Shannon Nationals’ first round of 2018, the first event to grace the world-class track. After plenty of planning and construction work, the Bend has the capacity to accommodate for all motoring disciplines in the one complex and has attracted plenty of interest. CAMS has been a supporter of the project since it was first mooted, including securing FIA approval for the venue and working with the South Australian government to locate an appropriate site and design. The circuit is inspired by some of the world’s most iconic racetracks and is Australia’s only circuit to comply under the latest FIA Grade 2 and FIM Category A standards. CAMS CEO Eugene Arocca was thrilled with the setup of the venue, labelling it as a game changer.
“It’s a huge thrill for the Shannons Nationals to be making history as the first motor sport event at the venue – we can’t wait for the first cars to hit the track” Eugene Arocca, CAMS CEO
“The various configurations of the circuit will make the Bend an iconic track that competitors of all levels will gravitate to,” Arocca said. “It’s also a huge thrill for the Shannons Nationals to be making history as the first motor sport event at the venue – we can’t wait for the first cars to hit the track.” While the circuit itself boasts an impressive 7.7 km track, the second longest permanent race track in the world, second only to the Nordschleife in Germany, the Shannons Nationals will create headlines by using two different layouts throughout the three day event. As the major drawcard for the event, the CAMS Australian Endurance Championship will be the first to utilise the whole 7.7-kilometre ‘GT’ circuit, as its endurance conditions make it perfect for the race. At 4.95km long, the International Circuit layout, ideal for most national series events and Supercars, will play host to the other six categories taking place at the Nationals.
From an officials’ perspective, the opening of The Bend provides a unique opportunity to be part of a historic moment in Australian motor sport.
A combination of fast straights and 35 technical corners make the Bend exciting from both a driver and spectator’s point of view, while an aggregate rise and fall of 85 metres ensures remarkable viewing.
CAMS’ 2016 Australian Official of the Year, Rob Thiry, believes it’s an opportunity that should not be passed up.
GT Circuit 7.77km
“I am not sure we will ever see another circuit of this scale be made in Australia again in my lifetime so it’s a unique opportunity. “For South Australia and as well as all motor sport officials, The Bend represents the first permanent circuit built in about twenty years.”
“I never imagined that a world class motor sport facility would be built in South Australia,” Thiry said.
International Circuit 4.95km
West Circuit 3.40 km
West Plus Circuit 3.41km
East Circuit 3.93km
RACING AT THE BEND The following categories will take to the track as part of the opening round of the Shannons Nationals: • CAMS Australian Endurance Championship • Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge Australia • National Sports Sedans Series • Australian Prototype Series • Radical Australia Cup • Heritage Touring Cars • Group S Racing

CAMS DARES TO BE DIFFERENT Dare To Be Different, an award winning program aimed at increasing female participation in motor sport at all levels, is now up and running in Australia.
“Dare To Be Different aims to inspire the next generation to smash preconceptions and prejudices, connect girls and young women who are keen to create change in the industry”

Some of the biggest names in world motor sport were on hand at the Formula 1 2018 Rolex Australian Grand Prix to welcome the program to Australia. Mercedes F1 Team Principal Toto Wolff, Williams F1 Deputy Team Principal Claire Williams, Formula 1 boss Chase Carey, Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) President Andrew Papadopoulos, Australian Grand Prix Corporation Chairman John Harnden, as well as CAMS Australian Rally Championship
driver Molly Taylor were all on hand to officially launch the program down under. Dare To Be Different is a unique educational program, founded by former Formula 1 test driver Susie Wolff and CEO of Britain’s Motor Sport Association, Rob Jones. Susie Wolff said she was delighted to see the program expand to Australia. “Dare To Be Different aims to inspire the next generation to smash preconceptions and prejudices, connect girls and young women who are keen to create change in the industry as well as showcase those who are already role models for change in the sport,” Wolff said.

“We are very excited to be working with CAMS in Australia to ensure increasing female participation in motor sport and highlight to young girls the impact that they can make in what is a male dominated industry.” Papadopoulos said the program would reach thousands of young girls across the country. “CAMS has worked closely with Susie Wolff, the founder of this iconic initiative, to adapt their successful model for the Australian market,” Papadopoulos said. “We are proud to be taking on responsibility for implementing such an important project across Australia, which will encourage young girls to consider careers in STEM industries CA M S .COM.AU
(Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), using motor sport as a tool to reach their dreams. “We’ve already had a lot of interest from a number of schools as well as women involved in motor sport across a range of disciplines, including Supercars, who are keen to share their experiences having worked in the industry. “We know women are underrepresented when it comes to participation and involvement in motor sport in Australia and this program will help ensure we start to get more females into the mix, whether as drivers, mechanics, engineers or administrators.”
The Dare To Be Different network unites women in motorsport in an unprecedented manner, with members benefiting from direct access to their peers, colleagues and even their idols for information, advice and inspiration.

FREE TO AIR It’s been a busy month on track, but off the track it was just as big, with CAMS announcing it had secured free-to-air coverage for rally and off-road Championships. The Seven Network will screen all rounds of the BFGoodrich CAMS Australian Off Road Championship (AORC), three rounds of the CAMS Australian Rally Championship (ARC), while all rounds of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) will also be broadcast on free to air through 7mate. AirTime Media will once again prepare 30 minute dedicated shows following each round of the AORC and ARC to screen on 7mate, while the 7mate broadcast will take content from each round of the WRC. CAMS CEO Eugene Arocca said securing a free to air broadcaster was a coup for all three championships. “This is an exciting development for Australian motor sport fans and competitors,” Arocca said.

"It's been an absolute pleasure working with Saul Shtein and his team at Channel 7 to finalise this arrangement.” Shtein, Channel 7's Head of Sport, said he was excited about the new partnership. "Across the Australian Rally and Off Road Championships, as well as the WRC, there is going to be plenty of exhilarating action for viewers to soak up on 7mate," Shtien said. "We're excited to be working with CAMS to deliver these products to television screens around Australia, and of course it’s all free." With the first highlightfilled episode of the Courier Eureka Rally airing on Sunday 18 March, fans can next tune in to 7mate on Sunday 5-8 April for the WRC Corsica Linea-Tour de Corse.

The Australian Grand Prix has come and gone leaving quite a mark in what was a fantastic weekend. From the opening roars of engines on Thursday to the final chequered flag on Sunday, there was plenty of action across four jam-packed days at Albert Park. Vettel edged ahead of Hamilton to win his third Australian Grand Prix, after the defending World Champion started from pole.

CAMS Ambassador Daniel Ricciardo narrowly missed out on a podium finish, edged by Kimi Raikkonen by less than a second.
The event would not have been as successful as it was without the hard work and dedication of more than 950 dedicated officials.
The CAMS marquee proved exceptionally popular, as fans tested their skills in the Motum F1 simulator.
In a tribute to the late Peter Nelson, CAMS renamed the Stewards Cup to the Peter Nelson Cup. The Officials team at turn two were named the winners of the Cup in a ceremony held on Sunday evening.
Another highlight were the CAMS affiliated Car Club displays, where fans were able to admire plenty of impressive cars from all eras, including the Austin Healey Sprite Drivers Club who provided the cars for Formula 1 drivers’ parade.

RIDE OF A LIFETIME CAMS licence holder Stephen Dunn enjoyed the lap of a lifetime, aboard the Minardi two-seater at the Formula 1 2018 Rolex Australian Grand Prix. With thanks to health insurance partner Australian Unity, Dunn was personally chauffeured a lap around the Albert Park circuit by current Supercars driver Will Davison aboard the two-seater. “It's just mind blowing. The acceleration obviously is just absolutely fabulous, those quick gear changes, the raucous V10 behind you,” Dunn said. “The cornering speeds are absolutely mind-blowing, but the thing that hit me was the brakes, they're braking so late. Honestly when Will got on the brakes, it was literally like you've hit a brick wall - it just stops it so quick, and the next thing you're around the corner, and then that's when you're

feeling the cornering speeds. It was just mind blowing.” Dunn, who himself has raced in tarmac rallies and in Group S, was grateful to experience an openwheeler. “How these guys do it for 60 laps is pretty amazing… all credit to these guys that do this every day. Open wheel or V8, just amazing,” Dunn said. “I very much appreciate what CAMS and Australian Unity have done to be able to get me in this position and offer up this great prize. It doesn't go unnoticed.

“I am a racer, and I love the Formula One and have a lot to do with CAMS because I have to have a licence and go through all that. I was just chuffed that someone who races and is so into it actually won the prize so that was great.”

CELEBRATING OUR BEST The Australian Motor Sport Hall of Fame, presented by Speedcafe.com, inducted 21 new members as well as elevating two of the motor sport’s finest to Legend status. 2016 inductees Sir Jack Brabham and Mick Doohan were the first pair to be welcomed to the new Legends category, cementing their place as icons in Australian motor sport. A further two Brabham names were welcomed to the Hall of Fame, with brothers David and Geoff Brabham joining their father. The Le Mans 24 Hours winners headed a list of circuit racers that included touring car greats John Bowe and John Harvey, 2015 FIA World Endurance Champion Mark Webber, and CAMS’ own Tim Schenken.

Rallying was represented by Frank Kilfoyle and Greg Carr, with off road’s Craig Martin also recognised for his achievements.
Garry Connelly, Hall of Fame Chairman, said the Hall of Fame is fast becoming Australian motor sport’s signature night of nights.
Off the back of recent FIA and CAMS Castrol Official of the Year awards, Roger Chirnside was bestowed with the Speedcafe.com Spirit of Speed Volunteer of the Year Award, presented by Michelin. The award further recognised Chirnside’s fivedecade long service to motor sport.
“It has been fantastic to see how this event has grown in both numbers and stature in just three short years,” said Connelly.
Celebrating the achievements of participants across two and four-wheeled motor sport, the evening also celebrated the special achievements of speedway promoter Frank Arthur, television commentator Mike Raymond and motorcycle crew chief Jeremy Burgess.
“We have inducted another 21 quality personalities tonight who have all contributed significantly to Australian motor sport, both on and off the track. “The feedback on the list provided by our voting panel has been very positive and again show the depth of talent we have produced in this country.

DRIVER EDUCATION IN FOCUS The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport has opened an online petition to encourage governments to deliver a dedicated driver education program for secondary school students. The petition has the support of Andrew Fraser, the NSW Member for Coffs Harbour. Initially, this petition is aimed at the New South Wales state government, with a view to expanding any program nationally based on its success in NSW. CAMS President Andrew Papadopoulos said there was a need
22
for more driver education, with young people over represented in the road toll. “There is a need for our future licence holders to learn more about driving before they are handed the keys to the family car,” Papadopoulos said. “We believe that educating young people in school will have a positive impact on these young minds when they eventually secure their licences and are left to drive on their own and with their friends. “Providing them with information about defensive driving, the importance of not being distracted
by phones or their mates, and many more other insightful lessons which will help shape their future driving habits. “I’d encourage everyone to sign the petition below to show the NSW government that we are serious about the need for increased driver education for the next generation of drivers on our roads.”

ST GEORGE 399 BIGGER AND BETTER IN 2018 The St George 399 is ready to host Australia's best off road teams as they tackle round one of the BFGoodrich CAMS Australian Off Road Championship on 4-6 May at St George in south-west Queensland. Hosted by the South East Queensland Off Road Racing Association (SEQORRA), the event heads into its second year in 2018 and promises to be bigger and better than last year. Improvements and a 12-kilometre extension to the purpose-built course, which is only nine kilometres from town, will create closer racing for all classes of vehicles and provide even more challenges for competitors. Changes to the start-finish line and paddock area have also created more spectator opportunities for locals and off-road fans. Trent Challenger, owner of the St George Bakery and the driving force 24
behind bringing the event to St George in 2017, explains. "The new section runs through a dry creek bed and it twists and turns and there are a couple of drop offs there, nothing too extreme," he says. "We have modified the start finish line so it's close to the 'Bakers Dozen' where the spectators sit; you can see the start finish line, the pits, a few of the bends are all closer together now so there is a bit more action in one spot." Challenger says organisers have also taken competitor feedback on board, making changes to some of the long straights to promote closer racing between the classes. "They all loved the track but the big straights, the big cars were just too far away and the small guys were just maxing out, and they said they would like a few more turns and twists," says Challenger.
"We have taken some of the big straights out and put in some chicanes and some turns to stop the bigger cars getting too far away from everyone else." Scrutineering for the event will take place on the Friday afternoon with prologue on Saturday morning, followed by three-laps on Saturday afternoon. Section two kicks off on Sunday with a gruelling six-laps, totalling more than 450 competitive kilometres. In addition to the on-track action, there is plenty to do in St George over the weekend. The small rural town in south-west Queensland has really embraced the event and will hold the St George Show on Sunday 6 May with the local rodeo and fireworks on Sunday night following the St George 399.

NEXT STOP, FOREST RALLY After a highly competitive round one at Ballarat's The Courier Eureka Rally in March, round two of the CAMS Australian Rally Championship (ARC) will head to Western Australia's southwest on 27-29 April. History shows that the Make Smoking History Forest Rally can be crucial to ARC title hopes - no team has won the ARC title without contending the Forest Rally since the event became part of the Championship in 1974 - making it a 'must do' for those in the championship hunt. Only two of the current crop of leading drivers, Tankformers Eli Evans and Subaru do Motorsport's Molly Taylor, have stood on the top step of the Forest Rally podium. But with a near perfect performance at The Courier Eureka Rally, Toyota Genuine Parts' Harry Bates and John McCarthy will rate their chances as they head west on top of the CAMS ARC points table.
past, I actually managed to take my very first heat win in the ARC in WA at the very start of 2016," Bates said. "It's an event that is a big challenge for a driver. You've got that unique ball bearing surface, but the roads are really enjoyable and it's a really well organised event and Busselton is a really great place to visit too." Three-time ARC Champion Eli Evans will head to Perth with a local advantage, with new co-driver and West Australian Ben Searcy on board to hopefully provide an added boost. "Aggressive drivers do really well at the Forest Rally and I tend to be a little bit aggressive at times," Evans said. "It's been a good rally for me in the past and we're looking forward to it. "We've got a list of things we want to change on the car and see if we can find that extra pace."
Other key contenders in WA will be those returning to the ARC in 2018, including Steve Glenney, whose stellar drive in Ballarat earned him second outright, Adrian Coppin and Glen Raymond. And West Australian's Brad Markovic, who claimed a podium in heat two last year, and John O'Dowd, reining ARC2 champion, are sure to put their local knowledge to good use. BATHURST 6-HOUR
Iain and Grant Sherrin have won a thrilling Hi-Tec Oil Bathurst 6 Hour, overcoming late drama to ultimately concur the mountain. It was far from smooth sailing for the pair as they fell 40 seconds behind the leader after being handed a drive through penalty in the final 30 minutes. In a stroke of good fortune for the Sherrin Brothers, the safety car entered the track with just 10 minutes to go, allowing Grant to close the gap on then-leader Brett Strom.

After the restart, Sherrin made a final charge with two laps remaining to overtake both Strom and Steven Johnson sealing an emotional victory for the Queenslanders. Meanwhile, in the other classes, Karl Begg and Justin Anthony won the A2 (Extreme Performance – Normally Aspirated) class finishing seventh outright, while the Scott Gore, Keith Bensley, Patrick Galang BMW 135i entry won the B1 class.

VALE PETER NELSON The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) and the Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC) are saddened to hear of the passing of long-standing official Peter Nelson.
an appointee to numerous CAMS committees, a member of the Australian Motor Race Commission, President of the Phillip Island Auto Racing Club (PIARC) and many more distinguished roles.”
Peter passed away on Tuesday, 20 March, following a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Marcia, children Melissa, Kirrily and Jo, along with grandchildren Kyle, Hanna, Marli and Lewis.
Peter has long been involved with the Australian Grand Prix in both Adelaide and Melbourne, and was Secretary of the Meeting from 1985 until 2007.
Peter was awarded CAMS life membership in 2002.
In a tribute to the late Peter Nelson, the Stewards Cup was renamed the Peter Nelson Cup at the Formula 1 2018 Rolex Australian Grand Prix.
CAMS CEO Eugene Arocca paid tribute to Peter’s outstanding contribution to Australian motor sport. “Peter was without question the architect of running a modern Formula 1 race, not just here in Australia but also around the world,” Arocca said. “He will be sorely missed at this week’s event at Albert Park. “Peter was an inspiration and mentor to many, including many of us at CAMS. He was always calm, organised and his positive attitude had a profound influence on all officials. “He was also heavily involved in the administration of motor sport as a National Council Member,
3 2
AGPC Chairman John Harnden also paid tribute to an “amazing man”. “Peter was a true pioneer for motor sport, both four wheels and two,” Harnden said. “His contribution, not only at Formula 1 events around the world, but also in MotoGP, helped shape the organisation of motor sport as we know it today for which we are forever grateful. “He is an amazing man who will be greatly missed.” Current president PIARC Geoff Bull spoke highly of Peter. “Whist we are allowed to feel sad, that Peter will not be around in a physical presence any more, I feel glad and proud to have worked, lived and played with this remarkable man for 50 years,” Bull said.
The Stewards Cup has been awarded to the best team of officials in years gone by - formally reflecting Nelson's drive and guidance to other officials. CAMS General Manager of Motor Sport Michael Smith saw Nelson as a great mentor to his own professional career, and felt that Nelson epitomised the essence of the caliber and work ethic of Australian Grand Prix officials. "I have known Peter for over 20 years and during that time Peter mentored me both personally and professionally offering many insights that made me a better person," Smith said.

CAMS HISTORY
DOUG STEWART Last month, Doug Stewart celebrated his 90th birthday. Take a look back at his contribution to CAMS over many years, through the below excerpt from the popular CAMS History Book.
Doug Stewart was never happy to being referred to as President - he preferred Chairman. He was chairman of the NSW State Council of CAMS before being elected President in 1969. Stewart will always heavily remembered for his successful contributions to motor sport success as a driver, team owner and manager. Long before Stewart owned the first rally franchise in the world, Ralliart, he won the 1957 Ampol Round Australia Trial for Volkswagen. In 1966 he was engaged by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Japan to conduct an 8000-mile test on two Mitsubishi Colt 1100cc fastbacks prior to Mitsubishi finalising its specifications for the Australian market. The success of the test program led Mitsubishi to offer the two test cars to Stewart to run in Australian rallies where his team won five successive Southern Cross rallies. During the 1980’s, the team, now known as Ralliart, competed in circuit racing in Mitsubishi Starions driven by Bran Jones and Gary Scott. Mitsubishi offered Stewart the Ralliart licence for Australia and the team ran successful rally campaigns in Australia and the Pacific region with drivers Ross Runkerton and Ed Ordynski. The success led to the Formation of Ralliart Europe, which was headed by Andrew Cowan. It was to win four World Rally Championship with Tommy Makinen. Stewart had bought professionalism to an essentially amateur sport.

WAMS GRADUATES REUNITED
SUN SHINES ON QLD MOTOR SPORT EXPO
Alexandra Whitley and Leanne Tander have raced together in the SsangYong Racing Series three-hour endurance race at Pukekohe, New Zealand. The pair first met in 2015 through a Women of Australian Motor Sport (WAMS) training camp, where Whitley had been awarded the WAMS Junior Development Scholarship.
"We both drove incredibly hard and smashed our pit stops, it was a privilege to be teamed up with such an accomplished racer, and to not only fly the Aussie flag, but for all the ladies as well," Whitley said on her Facebook page. "We were the first females home too."
It was a successful weekend for the duo who finished in eighth, despite some mechanical dramas that hampered their overall speed.

PERFECT DAY IN PORT LINCOLN For many, Easter is for spending time with family and eating chocolate, but for the folk at Port Lincoln, it was all about speed. Those at the 2018 Teakle Auto Sprint were blessed with clear and sunny conditions allowing the competitors to put on a show. 3 8
The first day saw John Beasley winning four of the seven sprints on the shortened track with Dan Day recording the fastest time of the day at 41.1463.
As the bigger track meant bigger engines, more metres and more power, no fan was left disappointed throughout the successful event.
Day got his chance to shine the next day on the extended track, winning all but one sprint in his 2014 Subaru WRX STi. CA M S S P EED READ
