Last year, Australia’s great white hope in motor sport’s highest level made a life changing decision to leave his team of 10 years for a new challenge.
The new series has been getting a lot of attention in recent months as it continues to roll towards its much anticipated opening round in May.
It was the contract decision that had the whole Formula 1 world talking and in August, it was the news that shocked the same world – Ricciardo had left Red Bull and was heading to Renault. While some questioned his move, Ricciardo made his feelings clear as to the direction of where both teams were heading and Renault was the one that appealed to him more. In March, Ricciardo will get an opportunity to justify his decision to go to Renault – and what better way to do it than on home soil for the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2019.

Photo: TCR Australia In November last year, TCR Australia had its official launch at Sydney Motorsport Park and has been gaining momentum ever since with interest from around the country.
Some big Australian teams such as Garry Rogers Motorsport and Melbourne Performance Centre have already purchased some TCR specification cars, including the award winning Audi RS 3 LMS. In May this year, the series returns to Sydney Motorsport Park as part of the Shannons Nationals to make its long awaited debut before headlining the Nationals a further six times in 2019.

THIRD TIME LUCKY FOR PRICE Fresh from his second career Dakar Desert Race victory on a bike, Toby Price is set to light up the off road world after getting a taste of four wheeled action in 2018. Last year, the popular off roader made his debut in the DEWALT SXS Australian Championship, winning his maiden round, before picking up a runner-up finish in just his second round. Price vowed to take part in more rounds this year after the Championship’s season finale in Broadford, but it’s his work in Northern Territory that will be the event to look out for.
THE BEND X TWO Following a sensational first year of racing, including the first ever race meeting, the Bend Motorsport Park is back for the Shannons Nationals, only this time it’s a double dosage. Tailem Bend will get it’s first taste of Shannons action in July, acting as the third round for sevenpart season, before the Nationals return again in November. The world-class track will wrap up what is expected to be a huge year of circuit racing in 2019.
In 2018, Price attempted the hugely difficult task of finishing Finke on both two and four wheels for the second time, but was unable to complete it. While he is yet to confirm his involvement, a third attempt could be on the cards in 2019 and with good things always coming in threes, this could be the year he completes the impressive Iron Man feat.

More than 120 drivers will compete at the 2019 LiquiMoly Bathurst 12 Hour as 40 teams battle it out for one of the most prestigious titles in Australian motor sport. The international endurance race, which also acts as the opening round of the 2019 Intercontinental GT Challenge presented by Pirelli, will attract fans from around the world.

The 2019 Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour will take place at 5:45am local time on Sunday, 3 February at Mount Panorama in Bathurst, New South Wales.
Officials
While the action on track will entertain the fans around the world, it’s the CAMS officials off the track that help keep the event running smoothly.
In celebration of the event, Speed Read crunched some of the numbers in the lead up to the great race of Australia.
More than 350 officials will be on hand throughout the four-day event including pit lane and flag marshals, medical officers and race control.
271 Laps
Making their mark in last year’s competition was Audi Sport Team, with the Belgian team completing a total of 271 laps. Outside of the victors, only eight crews were able to complete same amount of laps. There could have been more laps completed last year, however a crash with 20 minutes remaining forced the race to end prematurely.
129 Drivers
In what is considered the biggest race in Australia, it’s not just the duration that makes this a huge affair with around 129 drivers originally entered to compete at Mount Panorama. Part of this field consists of seven 12-Hour Bathurst winners, three of which have won the event multiple times. From Australian heroes such as Craig Lowndes and Steven Richards to international superstars Christopher Mies and Kelvin Van der Linde, there will be plenty of star power lining up.

Nationalities
Drivers from 22 countries across the globe will be making their way to Mount Panorama to take part in one of the most prestigious events on the endurance calendar. From Japan to Germany and South Africa to Brazil, six continents will be represented on the track. Last year saw Belgian outfit Audi Sport Team WRT claim the victory with a German, British and Belgian driver behind the wheel.

In the three days leading up to the iconic race, there will be four different categories hitting the track warming up the tarmac and keeping the fans entertained. Headlining the list is the Radical Australia Cup along with Formula Ford, Group S and Combined Sedans.

While there will be drivers from 22 counties, the numbers behind the car manufacturers are just as impressive with 13 brands from 10 difference countries taking part in the event. The cars competing are just as iconic as the race itself, with Lamboghini, Ferrari, Audi and Aston Martin just some of the brands providing vehicles.

The drought breaking victory went to Audi Sport Team WRT Robin Frijns, Stuart Leonard and Dries Vanthoor all behind the wheel of the Audi R8 LMS It was a slow start for the 2018 champions, qualifying the day in seventh before suffering communication issues, before eventually working their way to front. However with only 20 minutes to go, a horror crash between Bryce Fulwood, Ash Walsh and John Martin occurred, forcing the race to end prematurely, handing Audi Sport Team WRT the win.

CAMS CELEBRATES ANOTHER MILESTONE YEAR It’s been big year in Australian motor sport, with CAMS’ latest statistics confirming an increase in licence holders, officials and junior participation in the past 12 months. The number of CAMS affiliated car clubs and events also saw a significant rise in 2018, further highlight another sensational year in Australian motor sport. CAMS CEO Eugene Arocca said the numbers showed there was strong and growing interest in motor sport. “Motor sport in Australia is thriving and it is a really exciting time to be involved, there is no question,” Arocca said. “Competitors, officials and enthusiasts are clearly enjoying the benefits of being associated with CAMS and we

BARKER CLAIMS SECOND ROB ROY
Michael Barker has won the opening round of the CAMS Victorian Hill Climb Championship after putting on a brilliant display at the Rob Roy Hillclimb. Heading into the round as one of the favourites after winning last year’s corresponding round, Barker lived up to all expectations by posting the fastest time in all four runs of the event. Barker came agonisingly close to breaking the 20-second mark during his final run of the day, his winning time

of 20.05 too strong for the field of more than 80 drivers. Finishing behind Barker in outright second was David Mahon who pulled off a stunning performance to pip fourtime Victorian outright champion Gary Martin. Despite making risky changes to his car in the lead up, a surprised Barker was thrilled to win the round as he begins his bid for the 2019 state championship title.
“I am thrilled I must admit,” Barker said. "Considering where I started in the lead up for this event when I changed the engine, the car was fighting me all the way, to the point that I was thinking about using another car. “My expectation was Garry Martin and David Mahon would be battling for outright and my aim was to just get the car running.
“The car was fighting me all the way, to the point that I was thinking about using another car.”
“On the day though, I had no real idea what this motor would do but it’s worked well and I have ended the day on 20 points and in a good position for the title.” The next round of the CAMS Victorian Hill Climb Championship takes place at Bryant Park on 16 - 17 February.

Just over three weeks remain until the annual Queensland Motor Sport Expo takes place at the picturesque Beenleigh Gardens in Brisbane. Attracting a majority of CAMS car clubs from around the state, the expo’s main objective is to provide affiliated clubs a platform to promote themselves and attract new members. While there is a focus on attracting new drivers for clubs, the expo also promotes the various officiating disciplines in a bid to attract new officials, as well as building the CAMS’ profile and communication within the sunshine state.
EXCITEMENT BUILDS FOR QUEENSLAND EXPO
With a variety of activities available to the public, including a host of displays showcasing cars from all eras, the event has become a staple of the Queensland motor sport calendar. As well as the car displays, information sessions and corporate activations will also be on show with KCF Rally Sport, a business dedicated to modifying rally cars to suit the needs of anyone and everyone, to be one of the headline acts throughout the day. The Queensland Motor Sport Expo will take place on Sunday, 17 February at Beenleigh Gardens in Brisbane from 9am to 2pm, with free entry available to all attendees.

PENNY ENDS 2018 ON MOUNTAIN HIGH
CAMS Australian Rally Championship (ARC) driver Andrew Penny has capped off his successful 2018 season with one of the top honours at the Monaro Shire Council’s recent citizen awards. After more than 20 years contributing to motor sport on state, national & international levels both behind the wheel and the behind the scenes, Penny was awarded Sportsperson of the Year award. With the event recognising the achievements of a variety of citizens throughout the Snowy Mountains’ community, it was the first time the sporting award had been given to someone from motor sport. Despite being a well-deserved recipient of the award, Penny was still shocked

with the announcement, dedicating the win to the community’s growing interest in the sport. “I had no idea that I was going to win the award and I am not very good at speaking off the cuff so it would have been nice if I had something prepared,” Penny laughed. “But in all seriousness, I was really chuffed the local community has recognised the work we do behind the scenes. “We have helped locals build hill climb and circuit cars, pointing them in the right direction and people have started to take notice in us and the sport. “The region is dominated by mountain biking, snow skiing and football, so for someone to be doing something totally

While Penny enjoyed success on a national front in 2018 claiming the ARC2 and third in Rally Australia, he got more joy acting as a local inspiration in the sport.
“People are also looking at my daughter Kirra, who was an ARC co-driver in 2018, taken noticed as to how well she has developed and now looking to do the same with their own kids.”

USE OF RAIN LIGHTS IN RACE EVENTS Rain lights will become mandatory for all vehicles competing in race events from 2020, with competitors encouraged to begin using them from 1 January 2019 onwards. This applies to all race events on closed circuits across all levels of motor sport. Whilst previously reserved only for first category vehicles, or where specific category regulations required their use, the CAMS Manual - General Requirements of Automobiles Schedule C will be updated to define the requirements for the installation of a rain light on each competition vehicle for race events. Where fitted a rain light, must be switched on when so directed by the Clerk of the Course or their representative, as defined in the CAMS Race Meeting Standing Regulations. Stalled Car Warnings
An investigation into a system for the better management of a stalled car on a start grid is also being undertaken by CAMS. This investigation will seek to provide motor sport competitors with a better outcome when dealing with a stalled or slow moving car at the start of a race. Further details will be advised in due course.
General Requirements of Automobiles In 2019 - Schedule C (a) A rearward facing red warning lamp, acting as a rain light, must be clearly visible from the rear and mounted not more than 100mm from the centreline of the car. The CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Championship will open its 2019 season with a bang, confirmed as one of the support categories at the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2019. With the opening round of the Australian season to coincide with Australia’s biggest motor sport event, CAMS President Andrew Papadopoulos said the opportunity for young drivers was significant. “Albert Park is a fantastic circuit and the drivers will really get an opportunity to soak up everything that comes with being involved in a world class, Formula 1 event,” Papadopoulos said.

As part of a huge year for the category, 2019’s best drivers will also get a
chance to face off against the best in the region, with a Formula 4 Asia Pacific Cup also confirmed to take place in China late in the year, as well as an inaugural Formula 4 World Cup also on the cards. The Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2019 takes place on 14-17 March next year.

SCOUTS TEAR UP THE BEND The Bend Motorsport Park has played host to one of the biggest passenger ride events to date as more than 800 entries took part in the Australian Scouts Jamboree’s 'Full Throttle' program. Lasting 10 days, the Australian Scouts Jamboree has more than 10,000 scouts from 18 countries camp on site and do different activities focused on building leadership. Taking place in Tailem Bend, some of the events the kids took part in are rock climbing and mud crawling, while ‘Full Throttle’ was voted one of the favourites amongst the lucky participants. Run by CAMS affiliated car club Scout Motorsport Club of SA, the program has the kids join a CAMS licenced driver for a 15-minute ride around the world-class track. Other South Australian CAMS Clubs, such as the Circuit Excel Club of SA and the Tarmac Junior Development Club were also helping out with providing drivers, cars, officials and other volunteers. Scout Motorsport Club of SA president Kristen Bailey was thrilled with how the event turned out, believing some of the participants could one day join motor sport. “The kids absolutely loved it. The Full Throttle event managed to be crowned the most popular activity of the whole Jamboree,” Bailey said. “We ran 800 passenger rides all up, it is the biggest event of this kind in the history, in fact it took us more than 18 months to prepare for this event. “Kids were saying they couldn’t wait to get home and tell their parents, other were surprised how quick the Excel could go, while some were keen to know more about being an official or to get a Speed License.

HELMET REQUIREMENTS REMINDER With the 2019 racing season approaching competitors are encouraged to check their helmet to ensure that it meets the current requirements for Level A Circuit Racing, Off-Road or Rally competition.
Competitors wishing to compete in the above competitions - including all International Events - will need to ensure that their helmet complies with CAMS General Requirements – Schedule D Article 2.1.
As previously advised, from the 31st of December 2018, Snell SA2005 helmets will no longer be certified for Club, Multi-Club, National or International Race and Off-Road events. This update also applies for Multi-Club, State, National and International Rally events.
Competitors who choose to compete in Level B events using a Snell SA2005 helmet with a Frontal Head Restraint (FHR), may only do so if fitted with compliant FHR tether anchors – FIA 8858-2002 or FIA 8858-2010.

Alexandra Whitley and Caitlin Wood have progressed through to the next round of W-Series qualifying after a successful weekend in Austria. With 54 women from around the world all vying for to the next stage, Whitley and Wood were two of the 28 shortlisted drivers. The applicants put through 10 different assessments across the weekend which included ontrack testing in road cars, media examinations and fitness training. Following the intense final activity on Monday morning, the successful applicants were announced, with the jubilant Australian duo announcing their news via social media. The second and final stage will be a four-day event, which will see 28 girls selected from the shortlisted, before the historic series begins in May.

CAMS ANTI-DOPING POLICY – 2019 PROHIBITED LIST CAMS would like to remind the motor sport community of the importance of fulfilling their obligations under the CAMS Anti-Doping Policy. The CAMS Anti-Doping Policy is a set of regulations that primarily deals with the issue of performance enhancing substances and methods in motor sport. Further, the policy also addresses substances and methods that are deemed unsafe for competitors or against the spirit of sport. In conjunction with the FIA Anti-Doping Regulations, the objective of the policy is to create a level ‘playing field’ for all

competitors and protecting the safety and integrity of motor sport. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has published the 2019 Prohibited List which will come into effect on 1 January 2019. CAMS is issuing a reminder to all athletes that it is their responsibility to check the status of any medication or substance prior to use. Penalties for a positive test can be a four-year ban from sport. The 2019 Prohibited List, including the summary and explanatory notes can be viewed on the CAMS website by clicking here.

HISTORIC FUEL REQUIREMENTS FOR 2019
The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) has made necessary changes to permit the use of alternate unleaded racing fuels and additives to those participating in events for the 5th Category. From 1 July 2019, leaded fuel is not permitted for use in any CAMS sanctioned motor sport, in line with the Australian Government’s decision to ban the use of lead in fuel for motor sport. CAMS’ revised fuel regulations will allow Historic competitors a wide choice of alternate fuels and additives, readily and commercially available in Australia.
5Th Category. The definition applied for unleaded racing fuel and additives is much broader than that defined in Schedule G and will present a range of fuels and additives, commercially available in the Australian market to choose from. The general conditions of Schedule G will still apply, where not varied by the 5th Category regulations; such as when an alcohol fuel is being used in competition, the car must display symbols with the letter “A” in white on a circular red background with a white border and must be placed adjacent to the racing number on each side of the vehicle, and one adjacent to the filler point.
’Schedule G – Fuel’ of the 2019 CAMS Manual will apply the removal of the use of lead in fuel as of 1 July 2019 Schedule G will now include the provision for CAMS Groups, such as 5th Category Historic, to apply alternate fuel and additive criteria in the specific Group regulations to better suit the needs of those historic engines that have relied on lead in the fuel since they were originally manufactured. The ’5th Category – Historic Cars; Vehicle Eligibility – General Requirements’ will provide the definitions for the fuels and additives that are now permitted for the

Registrations for the 2019 BFGoodrich CAMS Australian Off Road Championship are now open. The three-round 2019 BFGoodrich CAMS Australian Off Road Championship season will commence one month earlier than 2018 with the St George 399 to kick off the season on 5-7 April. Both the Tatts Finke Desert Race and Rainbow Desert Enduro will be in similar dates to this year with the iconic Desert Race to take place in June and the Rainbow’s Enduro to see off the season in August.

WA CELEBRATES 2018’S HEROES Western Australia’s best have been recognised at the first CAMS State Awards presented by Burson Auto Parts at Crown Perth, with both on and off track winners being celebrated. Headlining the list of winners was Paul Bartlett who was awarded the Western Australian Castrol State Official of the Year, while 17-year-old Samantha Polak was awarded with the Castrol Junior State Official of the Year. Fellow junior Brock McGregor was also recognised, receiving the Burson Future Star Award following a brilliant year on the track.
The next CAMS State Awards, presented by Burson Auto Parts will be held in Tasmania at the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Hobart on Saturday 2 February 2019.

PORSCHES IMPREZ IN SEASON OPENER

The Impreza WRX Club Victoria kicked off their 2019 motor sport season in January, as more than 120 drivers from around the country took on the famous Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit for a special Multi-Club Super Sprint. With the club’s championship set across five classes of varying modifications, all Subarus are eligible to take part in the event. Despite the season opener being tailored for Subarus, the club’s motor sport director, Kurt Miglas, revealed the event was open to all types of cars.
Leading the charge for the Subarus was Miglas, with the WRX STI pilot claiming the sixth outright fastest time as well as picking up the Super Sprint class.

As Zhangzhi Low took out the fastest time for the clubman class, the 2018 Impreza WRX Club champion was thrilled with the day’s proceedings, despite a lack of broken records.

The Impreza WRX Club’s second round will take place at Sandown Raceway on 23 February.
“Whilst the events are primarily run to host the WRX Clubs motor sport championship, their event always hosts a variety of marques and models filling out the field,” Miglas explained. “This makes for a great spectacle for member spectators and other invited guests. “With the Porsche club hosting their season’s opening round the following day, many cup cars took the opportunity to use the event as a shakedown.” When it came to the actual racing, it was a Porsche that posted the fastest time with Nick Karnaros taking out top honours over fellow Porsche pilots Joseph Ensabell and Jamie Lovett.

“The event was a great start to the year, with a very smooth run day for the amount of competitors and cars involved with minimal incidents,” Low said. “Conditions were a little hotter than we expected, with most of our regulars being one to two seconds off their personal best times due to the temperatures - so unfortunately no class records broken today.”

Changes are being made to the regulations surrounding the use of Frontal Head Restraints (FHR) in Speed Events from 2020, for those using vehicles equipped for its use. This will mean anyone racing a 1st category vehicle, or car with a CAMS logbook which applies a Race, Rally/ Road, Off Road or 5th Category classification, and used in an event applicable to its Log Book classification, requires the mandatory use of an FHR. The use of an FHR will not become mandatory in Speed Events for competitors who will be participating in events without the mandatory use of additional equipment such as a safety cage, safety harness or competitionstyle seat, such as using a road registered vehicle at a club’s ‘come and try day’. FHRs are now common place throughout motor sport, providing a significant improvement to the safety of those participating in the sport, especially in the instance of a forward impact incident. The vast majority of CAMS’ motor sport disciplines require the use of an FHR, with various studies showing the benefits, with reduced injuries to the neck by providing additional support to the head through attachments to the helmet.

All competitors will be encouraged to follow this recommendation in 2019, before it becomes compulsory in 2020. The below change will apply in the 2019 CAMS Manual of Motor Sport, Schedule D:
It is highly recommend that an FHR compliant with Standard A and a Helmet compliant with Standard A is worn when competing in: a) Each 1st Category automobile, except for a Superkart or a 5th Category automobile which is exempt from the use of a FHR; b) Each automobile the subject of a CAMS Log Book which applies a RACE, RALLY/ROAD, OFF ROAD or 5th CATEGORY classification whereby that automobile when used in an event applicable to its Log Book classification requires the mandatory use of a FHR. NOTE: The use of a FHR is not required for a Road Registered automobile for a SPEED Event whereby the necessary equipment for the correct use of a FHR is not fitted to the automobile (i.e. 5/6 point safety harness).
Anyone racing a 1st category vehicle, or car with a CAMS logbook which applies a Race, Rally/ Road, Off Road or 5th Category classification requires the mandatory use of an FHR. Click here to view the 2019 CAMS Manual of Motor Sport.
