GENERAL NEWS

25 YEARS OF TARGA TASMANIA Matt Close has become the eleventh winner of Targa Tasmania, as the rally celebrated its 25th anniversary since the inaugural event in 1992. Close and co-driver Cameron Reeves claimed overall honours aboard their 2015 Porsche 911 GT3 by six minutes and 41 seconds. Michael Pritchard and Gary Mourant placed in second place aboard a 2016 Dodge Viper ACR, and Targa Tasmania legends Jim Richards and Barry Oliver rounded off the podium in third place. An impressive drive saw motoring journalist Mike Sinclair claimed an impressive fourth place aboard his Renault Megane. Close enjoyed a thrilling dice for the lead with Dodge Viper driver Jason White throughout most of the rally. Engine problems on the penultimate day of competition halted White’s attempt of claiming a sixth Targa Tasmania win.

2008 Targa Tasmania winner Steve Glenney secured GT4 honours by three minutes and 16 seconds in his Subaru WRX STi over pre-event favourite Tony Quinn and his striking Lamborghini Huracan.

After 12 previous Targa attempts, Close earned his victory even amongst some minor scares including a sideways moment in the opening stage and a flat tyre on the penultimate stage.

Quinn’s off into a bank on day two made headlines, kudos to his now infamous ‘banking’ analogy.

“We had a bit of a fright on the Tinderbox Stage with a big moment and then three kilometres into Pelverata one of our rear tyres blew out,” Close told targa.com.au. “It was a very stressful hour – we got in before the sweep car and within our late time, but you just don’t need that. “It’s taken me 12 Targas to win – I hope it doesn’t take another 12 for my next one.

4

“It was rocks on the road, again. Bloody Subarus, and Mitsubishis, and Nissans, and all those rough cars!,” Quinn said. “And I just came upon it, there was no way but the bank. So I did a bit of banking…” In the Classic title, Jon Siddins was victorious aboard his 1970 Datsun 240Z over 2014 winner Barry Faux’s Mazda RX-7 by just over five seconds.

“We came down here looking for a position in class, so to come away with a category win is just awesome.” Jeff Beable led from start to finish in the GT Sports Trophy after a faultless display in his Nissan Skyline, and in TSD Trophy Darryl Marshall came from an overnight third place to take the win in his Ford Falcon Ute. The Vintage class was won by Wayne Clark’s 1938 Dodge Speedster Special.

“We ca me down h ere look in g f or a posit io n in cla ss, so t o come a wa y wit h a ca t egory “We are just going to keep doing what we are doing. Cruise along just fast enough to be in front and stay safe. Like Jack Brabham said, you only have to win by one second,” Siddins said.

win is ju st a wesome. ”

Queenslander Leigh Achterberg held on to win the Classic handicap in his 1982 Porsche 944, a minute clear of the 1963 Jensen piloted by Peter Ullrich. Alan Roe and Michael Lloyd suffered the ultimate heartbreak by retiring from the event, and the Early Modern lead, on the 37th of 38 stages. This gave victory to Andrew Bollom in a 1995 Mazda RX-7. “It’s been a great tussle all week and it’s been up and down. We led for a while on day two, but we’ve had some great battles right throughout the week,” Bollom said.

A FRESH-FACED AUSTRALIAN RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP The opening round of the Kumho Tyre Australian Rally Championship has kicked off at the Quit Forest Rally with the championship undergoing a face-lift in the offseason. Leading tyre brand Kumho Tyre has stepped up its motor sport sponsorship portfolio by securing the exclusive naming rights to the Kumho Tyre Australian Rally Championship in 2016, with the partnership seeing all competitors running on Kumho Tyres throughout the season. Also in 2016, the championship sees a significant change in its promotion, with no free-to-air television coverage as the ARC moves away from using TV as its core promotional medium, and moves into the on-demand digital age. AirTime Media, headed by V8 Supercars commentator

Neil Crompton, is now responsible for producing the video content for this year’s championship. ARC Chairman David Waldon is excited for the future of the championship. “Our strategy was and is simple – focus on the generation of world class, short form, colour video content, with modern content offering to meet these key virtues of the Kumho Tyre ARC,” Waldon said. “Spectacular imagery, talented drivers and co-drivers, human drama, fascinating machinery, amazing locations and scenery and – importantly – a rich and colourful history. “Most importantly we must produce this in a way that is tailored to meet modern audience consumption demands.”

Title Harry Bates (right), John McCarthy (left)

SEASON OPENER AT QUIT FOREST RALLY Simon Evans and Ben Searcy have won the 2016 Quit Forest Rally, the opening round of the Kumho Tyre Australian Rally Championship in Nannup, Western Australia.

The tie was broken by calculating the total competitive time for each crew across the entire event, with Dowel/Feaver ultimately joining Evans/ Searcy and Bates/McCarthy in third on the podium.

It wasn’t a walk in the park for the four-time Australian Rally Champion with Evans/Searcy pushed all the way by young gun Harry Bates and his co-driver John McCarthy.

Disaster struck for Mark Pedder/Dale Moscatt on the last stage of the event, with a broken tie rod signaling the end of their rally.

Both Evans/Searcy and Bates/McCarthy finished the event with the same points based on their positions in both heat one and heat two, however the bonus point given to Evans/Searcy for recording the most stage wins during the event was enough to hand them the event victory. “It’s a long trip over here so you always want to make sure you get some points but I love this, I just love being out here,” Evans said. “The way I look at it they’ve closed all the forests off just for me so it’s just fantastic. “The young fellas [Bates/McCarthy] just caught us unawares, we were pretty happy with our pace, sweeping the roads out the front, and I thought everything was pretty sweet and then someone said ‘Harry’s kicking your butt’ and I was like; ‘damn it!’” Bates was pleased with their second place for the weekend. “Simon [Evans] and I will leave here on a similar amount of points which for me is obviously still beyond what I expected coming into the weekend, so I think although I’m disappointed I’m not a bit closer to him today and that we couldn’t get that top spot but we still need to be happy with the weekend,” Bates said.

The opening round of the Onslow Contracting Western Australian Rally Championship ran alongside the ARC with dramas for all the preevent favourites across the weekend, throwing a blanket over the field and leaving it up to the final stage to determine the ultimate winner. Asia Pacific Rally Championship contender Mike Young and his co-driver Cameron Tunstall backed up their heat one victory with a strong fourth over the final stages, giving them enough points to take the outright victory. Following a broken drive shaft and a timing penalty, local Nannup driver Tom Wilde and his co-driver Nick Clements recovered to win heat two by 24.4s handing them a second outright. Michael Steele/Tracey Dewhurst finished the event in third outright. Neal Bates and Coral Taylor once again took top spot on the podium in the Australian Classic Rally Challenge, with John Ludlam/Justin Willis in second and Andy van Kann/Madelin Kirkhouse in third. Jason and Paul Lowther were victorious in the Clubman Cup Series, winning by the narrowest of margins (2.3s) over Dene Courtis/Robert King with Carl and Tracey Rattenbury rounding out the podium for the event.

Justin Dowel/Toni Feaver and Molly Taylor/Bill Hayes finished the event on equal points in the race for the final spot on the podium.

RALLY AUSTRALIA SIGNS KENNARDS HIRE AS TITLE SPONSOR

Australia’s annual round of the FIA World Rally Championship will be named Kennards Hire Rally Australia after one of the country’s biggest equipment hire companies signed as the primary sponsor.

This year’s Kennards Hire Rally Australia will be the 25th Rally Australia and the country’s 24th WRC event (the first event in 1988 was a round of the FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship).

Kennards Hire will become not only the title sponsor but also the major infrastructure supplier to the 17-20 November rally.

Rally Australia is also supported by the New South Wales Government through its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW, Coffs Harbour and other regional councils.

The event will be the 14th and final round of motor sport’s most challenging global series, which showcases the fastest drivers on gravel, tarmac, ice and snow in cars representing the world’s biggest manufacturers. “Kennards Hire Rally Australia is one of only two FIA World Championship events staged in Australia,” Rally Chairman Ben Rainsford said. “Unlike our circuit-based equivalent, the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, the WRC Rally Australia is staged over an area that covers around 80 kms from north to south and therefore demands an infrastructure partner such as Kennards Hire with exceptional resources and expertise.”

DON DUNOON It’s not often in motor sport that you find an official that has not only been accredited for over 20 years, but also has raced since the ‘50s, acted as an engineer for overseas car manufacturers and also worked as a senior executive for major car companies. Don Dunoon is one of Australian motor sport’s unsung heroes, and is proud to be a CAMS accredited official since 1995. His love for racing not only comes from volunteering at events, but also his previous history in racing cars and working for brands like Nissan and Ford. Not only has Don volunteered at 20 Australian Grands Prix between 1995 and 2015, but also competed in the race around Albert Park back in 1957 - the first ever Australian Grand Prix - in the Austin 7 that he prepared himself. CAMS CEO Eugene Arocca recently presented Don with a Certificate of Appreciation for his service to CAMS and Australian motor sport. “I had heard that Don was not able to volunteer for the 2016 AGP due to illness and after making enquiries I quickly worked out that he is in fact a stalwart of Australian motor sport,” Arocca said. “Not only did he have a wonderful history as a competitor dating back to the 1950s, he had worked in key executive roles at both Ford and Nissan. In addition, he had committed to giving back to the sport by

14

volunteering his exceptional services as an official at 20 consecutive Australian Grands Prix. “I was honoured that Don and his wonderful wife Nornie hosted me at their home for a morning tea, where Don showed me some fantastic photos and news clippings of his racing exploits.” Don left for the UK in the late 1950’s where he continued to compete and work as an engineer. After returning to Australia in 1960, he worked as a Senior Executive at Ford for over 20 years. In the ‘80s he was appointed the Chief Engineer for Nissan and successfully pushed to bring the Nissan GTR into the Australian market. Don was planning to volunteer again at the Australian Grand Prix for his 21st year in March as a Pit Lane Marshal, but was prevented from doing so due to illness. CAMS wishes to congratulate and thank Don Dunoon for his service to CAMS and motor sport generally. “I am sure that everyone in the Australian motor racing community is very grateful for the passion and commitment of people like Don and I was pleased to present him with a certificate acknowledging his fantastic contribution over more than 60 years,”Arocca stated. “He was particularly pleased to receive a complimentary copy of the CAMS 60 Year History.”

RALLY OFFROAD

ENTRIES OPEN FOR SOUTHERN CROSS RALLY Entries are now officially open for The Southern Cross Gold Anniversary Rally, to be held in November to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Southern Cross event in 1966. The rally is being organised by Australia’s leading historic rally club, the Historic Rally Association. Entries will be limited to a maximum of 70. Past winners of the Southern Cross Rally, Barry Ferguson (1967, 1970) and Ross Dunkerton (1980) are expected to head the entry list, with many other former competitors indicating their interest. Persons and cars that competed in any of the original Southern Cross rallies from 1966 to 1980 will be given preferential entries and a strong field of current historic rally competitors will make up the balance. The Southern Cross Gold Anniversary Rally is a touring road event, covering around 3000km over eleven days with a total of 40 timed competitive sections. A large part of the course will re-trace the roads of the early Southern Cross rallies. Roll over protection is not required, which will allow classic cars of the Southern Cross era to run without major modifications. The rally will conclude at Australia’s round of the World Rally Championship at Coffs Harbour, where SCGAR competitors will take part in selected Rally Australia special stages. Enquiries contact event director Bob Watson on 0427 201 158, or visit www.southerncrossanniversaryrally.com.au

KITTLE ON TOP AT AORC SEASON OPENER Matthew Kittle and Jordon Johannsen won the opening round of the 2016 Australian Off Road Championship, hosted at the BFGoodrich Tires Sunraysia on Keera Station, west of Mildura, Victoria. The two-day event and grueling 600km was an endurance battle for Kittle and Johannsen, but the pair showed consistency to get an early lead in the championship. Second outright was husband-and-wife team of Aaron and Liz Haby. After enduring a tough weekend making an unscheduled pit stop, the duo fought their way to second just 1m 7s behind first place. Dale Martin and Adrian Rowe became the first Prolite on the AORC podium since 2014, with the Victorians taking third outright. The inclusion of the new Superlite class into the AORC delivered a strong field of Polaris and CanAm UTV’s, and in the turbo category the Can-Am Maverick’s dominated, taking first, second and third. Young gun Toby Whateley and Simon Herrmann snatched the class win from Jeff McNiven and Frank Waite on the last lap, while Toby’s father, Tony Whateley and navigator Mark Petersen took third. In the naturally aspirated Superlite class it was an all Polaris affair, with Brent and Arlene Perrett taking the win, with Tim Dewhurst and Tim Scott second, ahead of ARC Champs Cody Crocker and Greg Foletta. Stuart Chapman took the Performance 2WD class win on debut with navigator Ross Challacombe, with Paul Youman and Graham Kluck recovering from a DNF in section one to finish second in class. Amy Chapman and navigator Lincoln Staude drove their Nissan Patrol to the Production 4WD Class honours, with Kingsley and Heath Weedon taking their Nissan Patrol to first in class for Extreme 4WD. Reigning AORC Champ Shannon Rentsch was a notable absentee from the winners’ circle, after qualifying second in the top ten shoot out Rentsch had a rare DNF in section one due to brake and CV issues. The Australian Off Road Championship now heads to the red centre for the second round of the season, the 41st Tatts Finke Desert Race on 10-13 June.

CAMS HISTORY

THE CIRCUITS OF THE ‘50’S Southport’s slightly more urban roads had carried the 1954 AGP where the destruction of Stan Jones’ famous Maybach and the first of Lex Davison’s four AGP victories took place. But Longford was a whole separate story. With a railway track somewhat inconveniently crossing the road and divers standing by – Monaco style – in case someone plunged off the bridges into the river, the place had a larger-than-life feel to it. Australia has been blessed with an extraordinary variety of motor racing circuits. There have been more than 100 venues that have hosted motor races on everything from airfields, fairgrounds and street circuits to purpose built tracks… Prior to World War II, all racing had been done on temporary circuits… But times were changing. In 1953, not only was CAMS formed, but there were two important developments on the circuit front.

It was also mighty fast. The lap record for the 7.24km course stands forever to Chris Amon (Ferrari P4) at average speed of 196.56km/h, set at the last meeting in 1968. This remained as the fastest lap in Australia for 28 years until the Formula 1 AGP moved to Albert Park in 1996. By then Longford had become a relic of a bygone age…

Firstly, Port Wakefield became the first purpose-built race track in Australia. It only lasted eight years, but was notably home to the 1955 AGP, won by Jack Brabham. Secondly, the selection of Albert Park for the 1953 AGP brought top-level public-road racing into a major city for the first time. The short-lived Parramatta Park (Sydney) track had opened the year before, but it never hosted a significant Championship race. Phillip Island’s new track opened in 1956. It stands as the only purpose-built track in Australian history which deliberately aimed for the combination of a decent length (originally 4.73km) and very high speeds. It is also the home of the first Australian Touring Car enduro, the 1960 Armstrong 500, and so set the Great Race ball rolling.

There was an altogether lower profile at the Hobart Sporting Car Club’s Baskerville circuit, which opened in 1958. The short-length venue has conducted several title races over the years, notably for the Sports Sedan Championship.

The final permanent circuit to be built in the 1950s was Hume Weir. Its designers resolutely went for exactly the opposite approach to the one adopted at Phillip Island: Hume Weir was both short (1.42km) and slow. It lasted until 1973, when the Albury and District Car Club found it did not have the resources to undertake the safety upgrades required by CAMS.

The 1950s also saw a collection of public road circuits grow. The 1953 season heralded not only Albert Park but also Gnoo Blas and Longford, followed by Southport a year later.

NEW MEMBER PORTAL Thanks to the assistance of technology partner InWolk, Clubman and National Licence holders can now renew their licences online, via the InWolk CAMS Member Portal. CAMS CEO Eugene Arocca was pleased with the improved online services accessible via the CAMS website, “We always endeavour to improve the service we provide to our members. The launch of the InWolk CAMS Member Portal will ensure a more user-friendly interaction, making it easier to get involved and stay involved in motor sport. Whilst Level 2 licences can still be both applied for and renewed via the portal, Circuit, Super Kart, Rally and Off-Road competitors can renew their licence without the use of a hard copy application. Licence holders with medical conditions can also upload scanned copies of their Medical reports for review,

with the system also facilitating the uploading of CAMS medical reports when general medical examinations are required for renewal. Although these upgrades make the member portal available to over 90% of CAMS competition licence holders, new Clubman and National licence applicants, International licence holders and dual licence holders will still need to submit a hard copy application. To renew your licence via the InWolk CAMS Member Portal, head to cams.com.au If you are unsure of your password, simply use the retrieve your password function here: www.cams.com.au/members/forgotten-password For more information, contact the CAMS member services team on 1300 883 959 or via email to memberservices@cams.com.au

TOP ROOKIE JOSH DENTON Third-generation Australian karter Josh Denton has made an impressive start to his 2016 CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship campaign. With two podium placings already recorded in races across Symmons Plains and Phillip Island, Denton sits an impressive fourth in the drivers’ championship. As the best placed rookie in the championship, Denton also sits only 14 points off AGI Sport’s Nick Rowe after two rounds. “It’s been very surprising for me,” Denton said. “I wasn’t expecting to be this far up the field, but I’m glad I’m here. I’ve learnt so much.” Denton, the Burson Auto Parts Rookie of the Round winner from the most recent round at Phillip Island,

has been enjoying the wheel-to-wheel action with his counterparts. “It’s close towards the front and it’s even better down the back. You can have nice tussles between people. The racing’s really good,” Denton said. A podium in Denton’s debut race in Tasmania was a highlight, though the young South Australian took greater satisfaction from claiming the U Race It Fastest Lap for the entire weekend at Symmons Plains. “I didn’t expect it,” Denton said. “When I came away with that in the final race, I was just like ‘woah’ - it was just a big surprise to me.” The CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship will next race at Sydney Motorsport Park on July 1–3.

KARTING AUSTRALIA’S DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

The Canberra Kart Racing Club has officially named its facility Circuit Mark Webber, in honour of the current FIA World Endurance Champion.

After a successful pilot in 2015, the Junior Sprockets program will continue into 2016 as well as the ‘Get Started in Karting’ program with support from SP Tools.

The ceremony took place at the NSW State Karting Championships, with the mayor of Queanbeyan Tim Overall, members of the Queanbeyan City Council and Alan Webber present at the event.

‘Get Started in Karting’ will focus on the grass roots of karting and assisting newcomers of all ages into the sport, with the Junior Sprockets program focusing on budding young karters with professional instructors and drivers.

Webber started his motor racing journey in Canberra and also won a NSW State Karting Championship, and is the only Australian F1 driver to have a circuit named in his honour.
