CELEBRATING OUR

10000 OFFICIALS Photo: Revved Photography

The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport has marked another significant milestone in 2018, with the 10,000th official registered.

CAMS CEO Eugene Arocca was thrilled with the milestone, putting the achievement down to the passionate individuals.

It is yet another positive sign for motor sport in Australia, with the growing support from such a large number of officials who dedicate so much of their time to ensure the sport is able to run smoothly.

“We are really proud of this milestone because officials are such a vital part of motor sport – they are integral to the safe running of the sport and nobody would be racing without them,” Arocca said.

From popular events like the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, Kennards Hire Rally Australia and Supercars to local and club level grassroots events around Australia, officials have been the backbone of motor sport for many years.

“Not only is it the big international and nationals events where they are important, but in the local and state events as well.

4

“There are thousands of grassroots events throughout Australia where being an official can be rewarding and give you a chance to see some of

the best motor sport talent on show. “We hope to continue to build our total and continue providing motor sport events in Australia with best officials in the world.” Joining up in the latter half of 2018, 38-year-old Vanessa Neilson was officially recognised as the 10,000th CAMS official. Born in Tasmania, Neilson spent her younger years as a big motor sport fan, before losing touch with the industry following a full-time appointment into nursing. A move up north to Darwin with her family was cut short when the family chose to live in Melbourne where she was introduced into the world CA M S S P EED READ

of officiating and designated to the medical team for her first event. “It feels really good to be the 10,000th official, I grew up watching motor sport and but never got a chance to actually do it,” Neilson said. “I never thought I would do anything like this ever and I didn’t even realise you could do it. “It wasn’t until I was pointed in the right direction that I realised it was available. I would have been doing it for years had I known earlier. “It’s a lot of fun, there are a lot of great people and everyone just seems to be amazing.”

CA M S .COM.AU

With education courses, support groups and plenty of events requiring volunteers, Neilson is just one example of the impact officiating can have on an individual. Neilson isn’t the only volunteer to enjoy the experience of being an official, as thousands of volunteers dedicate many hours of hard work to put on events for the love of the game and the ‘best seat in the house’.

OASTLER TOO STRONG

IN HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP Malcolm Oastler has taken out his fourth national Hillclimb title in five years after a dominant display during the 2018 CAMS Australian Hillclimb Championship at Bryant Park in Victoria. Oastler was brilliant on the final day of competition, claiming the fastest time out of the 96-strong field in every run before saving his best until

last to grab the fastest time of the weekend and break Bryant Park’s all time record in the process. With a time of 43.10 seconds, Oastler sat out of the remaining heats as his closest title rivals in defending champion Brett Hayward and 2013 champion Greg Ackland were unable to catch him in their last two attempts.

“Winning here today was great because it was we came here to do and it all worked out in the end,” Oastler said. “I wasn’t quick on Friday and I have no idea why, but here we are now as the Australian champion, it’s really good.”

Rounding out the top five for the weekend was Dean Tighe and Garry Martin. The weekend wrapped up with an entertaining shootout, as some of the top-ten had one last attempt at taking out a separate cash prize, which was claimed in dramatic fashion by outright ninth placed Peter Minaham.

“It feels very good, I managed to fluke it two years ago so there must be something about racing for money instead of the fastest time,” Minaham joked.

CAMS' SECOND ESPORTS WINNER

CROWNED AT PAX

Esports racer Dayne Warren has become the second winner in the CAMS – Motum Simulation VSR Showdown, claiming outright honours at the popular gaming convention, PAX Australia.

Warren’s victory will now see him enjoy a test day aboard a CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Championship car where he will join Sydney’s first round winner Dylan Shepherd.

Warren was victorious against Daniel Benefield, who also competed in the finals of the Sydney round, while Mitch McLeod joined the duo on the podium in third place.

“Absolutely stoked, I had no idea coming into this weekend that I’d ever walk away with a F4 test day so I couldn’t imagine anything better,” Warren said.

10

“The first couple of heats I was pretty confident, I had good pace throughout the weekend. Lucky that we got through the single lap shootout too.” With the program currently in the pilot phase between CAMS and partner Motum Simulation, CAMS provided advice on judicial outcomes and the format of the competition throughout the day.

The Esports events in 2018 will provide CAMS with important learnings ahead of the creation of formal regulations and event formats in future rounds.

The first six races determined the final 12 drivers, who raced for a place in the semi-final. A single timed lap shootout then determined the two races for the final.

More than 100 entrants took part in online qualifying earlier in October, with the top 18 drivers selected to enter the round at PAX Australia.

Details for the next round of the Motum Simulation VSR Showdown will be announced shortly.

HARRIS CRASHES SUBARU PARTY Mitsubishi Evo 8 Pilot Cody Harris became the king of the WRX Club of Western Australia’s after taking out their hill climb at Collie Motorplex, beating a sold-out field of 26 drivers.

It wasn’t meant to be for McLaughin, as Harris provided spectators with a thrilling finish to the weekend, edging out McLaughin’s time by just seven hundredths of a second.

Ayres set his fastest time after just two runs at the circuit, leaving James all the work to do in his final run, but it wasn’t to be, as James fell just short, rounding out the top five.

Harris was brilliant throughout the whole event, breaking the one minute and 40 seconds barrier on all four of his runs, including the fastest time of the weekend in his final run.

Sitting comfortably in third was Wayne Henderson, behind the wheel of the BMW 135, with four seconds separating him from the exciting battle for fourth.

His final run time of one minute and 29 seconds broke the heart of Subaru Impreza driver Rikki McLaughin, who went into the final run as the leader after posting his fastest time on his third run.

Only five hundredths of a second separated Jacob Ayres and his Subaru Forester with Impreza pilot Steve James, both drivers only completing three runs of the track.

While Harris took out the outright prize, McLaughin didn’t go home empty handed, taking home the Subaru class, while outright 14th placed Jeff Thomas was the best of the Toyota 86 class. The WRX Club of Western Australia’s next event will be at Barbagallo Raceway on Friday, 23 November.

SOUTH AND GOODRIED FULL OF GRIT 14

Michael South and Justin Goodried have sealed a gritty win during the Hasting Sporting Car Club’s 2018 Hastings Rallysprint at the Burrawan State Forest in New South Wales. With 17 competitors from multiple car clubs each completing six runs of the makeshift circuit, it was the Central North Coast Sporting Car Club pairing of South and Goodried who were too strong throughout the event. Each competitor had three runs on the circuit before attempting another three runs on the reverse direction,

with the slowest run from each direction being removed from the driver’s outright score. Behind the wheel of the Subaru STI, South and Goodried took advantage of the rule, claiming the fastest time across the field in all four of their selected runs. In a day of domination from the central coast based club, the pair were joined on the podium by Scott McCloy who took out second place alongside his Coffs Harbour & District Sporting Car Club co-driver Pip Benett.

A NEW MOTOR SPORT HUB FOR FISKVILLE Plans to resurrect the old Country Fire Authority (CFA) training site in Fiskville and convert it in to a multipurpose motor sports venue have gained momentum, with the Victorian Government contributing $150,000 towards a business case assessing the viability of the project. CAMS has worked closely with the State Government and Moorabool Shire Council, with the various groups coming together to develop the business case for the site. As part of the business case, the project will assess what infrastructure would be required, the opportunities for grassroots motor sport, driver education and training opportunities as well as industry development. CAMS CEO Eugene Arocca said he was delighted the Victorian Government had thrown its support behind the Fiskville project. “This represents an outstanding opportunity for Victoria to set a new standard for motor sport facilities and CAMS is grateful for the support of the Andrews Government in assisting with the funding for a business case,” Arocca said.

18

“Motor sport generates more than $700 million of direct economic impact in Victoria alone, based on an Ernst & Young Report from 2013. Since that report was issued the sport has grown by more than 40 per cent, so the development of Fiskville is an outstanding opportunity for regional Victoria to capitalise on the economic, sporting and community power of motor sport.” Victorian Minister for Sport John Eren said he was excited about the potential for the site. “We’re ensuring Victoria stays Australia’s sporting capital – investing in major sporting infrastructure like this so we can host the big events that support our global reputation," Eren said. The site, formerly a CFA training site, would be important for the region, according to Minister for Emergency Services, James Merlino. “We will work with the CFA, CAMS and the council to ensure any future activity on the site will be safe and suitable for the community, and capable of delivering economic benefit to the region," Merlino said.

“We're investing in major sporting infrastructure like this so [Victoria] can host the big events that support our global reputation.” - Victorian Minister for Sport John Eren

Local member for Buninyong Geoff Howard was also pleased to announce today’s news. “I congratulate CAMS and Moorabool Shire for their efforts to move this project forward – we’re proud to support a project that has the potential to kickstart a new phase in motor sport here in the Ballarat goldfields region,” Howard said

VICTORIAN LABOR BACKS MOTOR SPORT

The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) welcomes today’s significant funding pledge from the Victorian Labor Government. As part of today’s announcement, a re-elected Labor government confirmed it would inject significant funding into motor sport programs and facility upgrades. The election promise also includes a $300,000 grant for CAMS’ industry leading Dare To Be Different (D2BD) program encouraging women’s participation in motor sport at all levels. In addition to the funding for Dare To Be Different, a further $300,000 has been committed to CAMS' junior driver development program, Ricciard's Racers, which enjoyed a hugely successful 2018. Grassroots motor sport clubs will also be big winners, able to apply for $500,000 grants from a newly established $5 million Motor Sports Upgrades and Equipment Fund. There will also be $2.4 million in grants available to support local motor sport clubs across Victoria, allowing clubs to run bigger and better events. CAMS CEO Eugene Arocca said today’s announcement was an exciting prospect for motor sport in Victoria.

and we are absolutely delighted by Labor’s funding pledge, which will ensure grassroots motor sport can continue to thrive," Arocca said. "Whilst Victoria is the undisputed major events capital, supporting grassroots sport is fundamental to that reputation and we are very grateful for this significant announcement. “Clubs and facility owners will also be encouraged to apply for funding grants to provide safety upgrades, as well as improvements to facilities and amenities allowing for improved events and tracks. “As part of this funding announcement, the Dare To Be Different program has also been handed a significant boost with a $300,000 grant allowing us to further strengthen the program’s footprint. “Dare To Be Different has already proven to be quite a success in its first year in Australia and this commitment will ensure that more and more young girls understand the opportunities that motor sport can provide for women, whether as competitors, mechanics, engineers or in the media.” The Victorian state election will be held on 24 November.

SOLID WILLIAMS READY FOR BIG 2019

Australian Calan Williams’ solid debut season in Euroformula Open F3 Championship has come to end, with the teenager scoring points in his last four rounds in 2018. It was a turbulent start for the Western Australian’s first season in Europe, with Williams qualifying in the top ten on multiple occasions and using the first two rounds as learning experiences. The Fortec Motorsport driver clicked into gear in the third round, claiming his first championship points at Spa before backing it up in Hungary with his best result of the year, a sixth in the first race. Heading to the United Kingdom for his team’s home round in Silverstone, the 18-year-old managed to secure points in both weekend races for the first time, before repeating the feat at Monza the following round. Having completed six rounds of the prestigious championship along with a successful three-round pre-season campaign in the European Winter Series, Williams has now experienced all the major circuits in Europe.

26

With preparations for next year well and truly underway, Williams is confident he is ready to step up and have a huge 2019. “I feel this year has had a greater impact on me as a driver than any other year of racing,” Williams said. “I can see from my results early in the year to my results at the last race in Monza how far I have come as a driver, which should be an indication for a good year to come in 2019 “This year was always about learning as much as possible and I feel I have learnt a lot, so I am looking forward to racing for the top spot in Europe next year. “The experience of racing in such intense competition was also helped thorough the incredible guidance from the expertise of my team manager Mick Kouros and my race engineer Tom Toovey. “We are working closely with Fortec and are planning the strongest prechampionship preparation we can put together to be ready to hit the ground running in 2019.” CA M S S P EED READ

RICCIARDO’S RACERS CONCLUDES FOR 2018

Ricciardo’s Racers for 2018 has come to a close for 2018 with the final four sessions ending the CAMS initiative’s already successful year on a high. In the most recent set of national school holidays, the four events were spread across the east coast of Australia with Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania and Sydney all hosting one each. Kicking off the final sessions for 2018 was Sandown Raceway in Victoria on 28 September, with Supercars regular Tony D’Alberto guiding the teenagers. Following on from September’s sold out Sandown session, the program moved up north to the Gold Coast before heading back south to Tasmania. The final event for 2018 was held at Sydney Motorsport Park with more than 30 teenagers displaying their driving skills under the guidance of professional instructors. It was another highly successful year for the program, which saw 167 kids take part across all eight sessions, 17 more on last year’s total participation.

EMERY CLAIMS BACK-TOBACK GT CHAMPIONSHIPS Geoff Emery has produced a sensational victory during the Australian GT Grand Finale in New Zealand to take out back-to-back CAMS Australian GT Championships. Emery’s Hampton Downs 500 win, alongside Garth Tander in the Valvoline Audi R8 LMS GT3, capped off a remarkable season turnaround, which saw the 55-year-old, claim two round wins in four rounds following a disastrous start to the year.

SIMON SEALS SXS IN DRAMATIC FINAL ROUND Simon Evans has been crowned the 2018 DEWALT SXS Australian Champion following a dramatic final round at Broadford, Victoria. Having occupied top spot for the whole year, Evans’ season stood in the balance ahead of the final round’s Grand Final after crashing out the semi-final and limping to 15th. With title rivals Brett Comiskey and Stephen Henry both progressing to the last race of the year, Evans was relying on a poor result from both. Despite leading the field for a majority of the Grand Final race, Henry fell behind Ewan McClue in the final stages after taking the joker lane early.

Both Toby Price and Cody Crocker passed Henry on the last lap to round out the podium, while Comiskey unable to recover from a difficult start leaving both drivers off the podium, ultimately handing an emotional Evans the title. “To be the DEWALT SXS Australian Champion is such a huge relief, I am so happy,” Evans laughed. “It was a really tough event, and to sit there and rely on someone else to get a get result blows you away. “I have never won a championship like this, it was so nerve wracking, I never want to win it like that again.” Despite the disappointing ending, both Comiskey and Henry didn’t lose any places in the overall championship, ending the year in second and third respectively. FHR DEADLINE APPROACHING Rally competitors are reminded that Frontal Head Restraints (FHR) will become compulsory for those taking part in multi-club level events from 1 January, 2019.

“There will be a small cost to competitors to fit this equipment in their vehicle, but ultimately there is no price you can put on your life or that of your co-driver.”

Frontal head restraints are designed to reduce injury by limiting forward head movement during periods of rapid deceleration

CAMS Australian Rally Championship competitor Chris Higgs is also a big supporter of their introduction, following a heavy crash last year.

The changes follow the findings of the recent review into safety in rallying undertaken by the Australian Institute of Motor Sport Safety (AIMSS).

“I ran two years of ARC and never had a crash but then doing a club round is when I had my biggest accident,” Higgs added.

“The benefits of frontal head restraints have been proven in research undertaken throughout the world,” CAMS CEO Eugene Arocca said.

3 6

“Without a doubt in my mind, if we were not wearing neck support (in the form of FHR), we would have probably both broken our necks because it was an instant stop.”

CAMS has put together a FAQ on the introduction of frontal head restraints in lower level rally events, which is available to view here. Frontal head restraints will also become compulsory at club level events from 1 January, 2020.

The 2018 Kennards Hire Rally Australia will be a bonanza for motor sport fans, with both the CAMS Australian Rally Championship and FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) winners to be decided later this month. In the ARC, Eli Evans holds a 57 point lead over Harry Bates, while Steve Glenney, who will be competing in a Skoda for the first time this year, trails Bates by a further eight points. Molly Taylor also remains a slim chance to win her second title in three years. In the WRC, three drivers are in contention to take the title, over the weekend of the 15-18 November. While Estonian pilot Ott Tänak is an outside chance to sneak a victory after winning or leading in the past five rallies, the title fight will likely come down to five-time WRC champion Sébastien Ogier and Thierry Neuville, who holds a slender three point lead.

“We’ve been watching the (WRC) championship closely for the past few rounds and hoping the results would fall our way,” Rainsford said. “Following an incredibly tight finish in the penultimate round in Spain recently, we now know the most dramatic and unpredictable competition in world motorsport will host its thrilling showdown on the Coffs Coast.” Tickets for Kennards Hire Rally Australia, including a $99 Get Me Everywhere pass with adult access to all stages over three days, are still available online here. The Kennards Hire Rally Australia is supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW and takes place on the NSW Coffs Coast on 15-18 November.

Rally Australia Chairman Ben Rainsford believed it would be a dream finale for ticketholders.

JUNIORS AND LADIES SHINE IN DENISE GOSDEN MEMORIAL The CAMS Club Development Program funded Denise Gosden Memorial Ladies & Juniors Wynarka Enduro took place last month with up to eight drivers taking part in the Summit Racing Team Car Club hosted event. With three juniors and five women competing in teams entered from Broken Hill, Warrnambool and Sydney, the off road event saw competitors tackle 12 laps of a nine kilometre course with prize money on the line. While New South Welshman Lachlan Turley managed to secure a tight three-minute victory over Victorian Lynda Miller, only 20 seconds separated third and fourth, with Lauren Andrews enjoying her off road debut with a podium finish over Kimberley Hille. Rounding out the remaining four spots was Jarrah Taylor in fifth followed by Millie Vanderwoude, Shaydon Witmitz and Tanya Wales.

“I was nervous when I first said yes to racing, but I was going to have to drive it eventually so I wasn’t that nervous in the end,” Vanderwoude said. “I’ve navigated for both dad and mum many times in the past, so when presented with the opportunity to drive myself I wanted to do it because of the support from friends and family and I wanted to make them proud. “My favourite part of Wynarka has always been pedal to the metal straight or any of the good jumps but it was really nice moment when I finished and everyone was there taking photos with me. “I also enjoyed when I found out that my highest speed during the race was 137km/h, so I am looking forward to competing again and then eventually get enough experience race at a club event.”

STATE ELECTION UPDATES HUMBLED ROWLEY ELECTED IN WA

While Rowley’s appointment makes her the first woman to hold the position in living memory, her experience within motor sport justifies the selection. The East-Perth based Chair-elect has served a number of years on the Australian Officials Commission and the Western Australian Officiating panel, as well as many years as an Event Assessor and holding high level roles at national race meetings.

Rowley was not the only State Executive position to be decided upon during the meeting, with current State Council Deputy Chair David Moir re-elected for another three-year term. Other three-year state panel elections to be held saw Danielle Meyn voted as State Officiating Panel Chair, Scott Bennett as WA Motorkhana Panel Chair and David Percival as Off Road Panel Chair.

Norman Gowers’ position as the Elected Director for Victoria was confirmed, with Jess Harper also remaining in the position of State Council Chairperson. Graeme Williams was elected to the position of Deputy State Council Chairperson.

Noel Tippett, Peter Bready and Michael Holloway were confirmed for a two-year term, and David Bellenger for a one-year term. A casual vacancy for a seventh Executive Member position will remain open for one year.

STABILITY IN NSW AND ACT Jon Thomson will continue as the NSW/ACT State Council Chairman for 2019 after being re-elected during a recent NSW/ACT State Council meeting. He has also championed the mission of gaining more motor sport facilities in New South Wales with direct involvement as a board member of the proposed CASAR Park Circuit.

Evan Jones will continue his role as a member of the State Executive in the Deputy Chairman role for 2019, while Ian Williams and Nicholas Nikiforoff were also ratified to continue as State Executive members for a further three years. DRIVE DAYS END 2018 WITH RECORD It’s been a highly successful year for the popular Charity Driver Days with more than $450,000 being raised in 2018, with up to $150,000 donated on the final day in Phillip Island. This year has seen a mixture of both road and race cars cover more than 1000km across iconic Victorian locations such as Melbourne, Flinders, Yarra Valley and Phillip Island. The total amount donated following a whirlwind 48 hours at the Island saw a new funding record broken, as the money was split across a variety of charities including Challenge, Learning for Life and the LaManna Research Legacy Foundation. Charity Drive Days founder Greg LaManna was extremely thrilled and proud with the money raised for the cause.

A WHIRLWIND 2018 FOR THE NATIONALS It’s been a whirlwind year for the Shannons Nationals in 2018, with a host of dramatic endings, humble beginnings and historic moments all forming the year that was.

After the Nationals visited six circuits for six rounds across four states, Speed Read crunches some of the numbers that made up such a successful year.

Across a variety of both endurance and sprint races, a mammoth 2039 competitive laps were completed at the Nationals. The circuit to witness the most laps was Sandown Raceway in round two, with five categories completing 432 laps. Competitors only completed 258 laps at the next round in Phillip Island, making it the shortest for the year.

Officials are the heartbeat of motor sport and with an average of 150 officials taking part across the six Shannons Nationals, it’s no wonder each event was considered a success.

685

Some of the best drivers in Australia competed at the Nationals at one point in 2018, making up the sensational 685 cars competing at the six rounds. It should be no surprise that round one’s historic opening of the Bend Motorsport Park in April saw the largest competitor entry list with 176 cars across the seven categories. Queensland Raceway was the next highest with 121 entries, while Sandown rounded out the top three with 117.

Sandown and Queensland Raceway may not have had the most cars competing across the whole weekend, but both tracks boasted the most cars in a singular category thanks to Australian Production Cars (APC) Sandown took top honours with 48 cars entered in the APC, which included a variety of New South Wales state production cars, while the popular Fight in the Night at Ipswich saw 36 cars entered. The 2018 Shannons Nationals saw a good amount of diversity when it came to entertainment, as 15 categories took part in the six rounds. A mixture of both regular and onceoff categories appeared with seven categories attending for one round and eight categories, including the Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge taking part in every round, made regular appearances throughout the year.

The first winner was Nick Kelly who took out the CAMS Australian GT Trophy Series at Winton Motor Raceway. The final round at Sydney Motorsport Park saw Kim Burke claim his first Radical Australia Cup and Simon Fallon take out the Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge in the last race.

One of the most anticipated events of 2018 was always going to be the official opening of The Bend Motorsport Park. The Shannons Nationals’ opening round in April had the honour of being the first first-ever motor sport event to utilise the brand new world-class facilities. The event was so successful that the Nationals will return to Tailem Bend twice in 2019.

CLEMENTS ON TRACK FOR IMPROVED TITLE Talented driver Jason Clements is within touching distance of an Improved Production Cars Queensland title, with only one round at Morgan Park remaining in the series. Clements currently sits on top of the over 2-litre series standings on 266 points, 12 points ahead of his closest rival and defending national under 2-litre champion David Waldon, while Rod Lynch rounds out the top 3 with 199 points. Despite the title fight likely to go down the wire, Clements has no expectations for a victory, with the veteran content on just having fun. "I'm just heading into Morgan Park to have a good time and enjoy the racing. I've learnt not to expect anything in motor sport as anything can, and does happen,” Clements said. It’s been a long journey for the 44-year-old who began karting when he was just 15, after a fascination for machinery, cars and bikes inspired a second-hand kart purchase.

2, which paved the way for a well deserved Queensland championship and CAMS Driver Award three years later. Clements’ next career stop saw him in Formula Atlantic before making another move to Improved Production Cars in 2006. Starting out his new career behind the wheel of a Toyota AE86, Clements was offered to drive in fellow competitor Justin Wade’s BMW E36 M3, which he has since purchased and runs himself. “I just love driving race cars, but I would have to say my current car, the BMW E36 is my favourite though” Clements added. “Iain Williamson from MoTec Queensland and Masterson Motorsport, my son Kyler and I have put so much effort into the car setup to make it what it is. We are always changing it and always improving it.” The final round of the Improved Production Cars Queensland series will take place at Morgan Park on 17 – 18 November.

“I'm just heading into Morgan Park to have a good time... I've learnt not to expect anything in motorsport as anything can, and does happen” - Jason Clements

Following a successful round in the 1995 CIK Kart World Titles, the New South Welshman was offered an opportunity to drive in Formula 50
