POLE POSITION FOR RIO PARALYMPIAN COLIN SIEDERS Former V8 Development Series racer Colin Sieders will make his Australian Paralympic Team debut in Rio this month. Colin Sieders has been defying the odds from a young age; his first battle was surviving a near fatal road accident at the age of 15. Spending 88 days in intensive care and 51 weeks in hospital, he was faced with the daunting prospect of never being able to walk again. After five years of rehabilitation, Sieders found his calling in motor sport. First entering the Aussie Racing Car Series in 2003, Sieders became the first permanently disabled driver to compete in a national category. Along the way, Sieders climbed as high as the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Development Series to set a lap record in Adelaide and claim pole position at Sandown in 2004.

racing in the V8 Supercar Development Series,” Sieders said.

“It has been amazing to travel around the world, competing in some amazing places.”

However, another near fatal road accident for Sieders in 2011 forced him to a wheelchair once more and halted his motor racing ambitions. It didn’t take long for Sieders to adapt to a new sport after a chance meeting with his friend and former trainer Sam Norton.

“He was an ex-slalom kayaker and he was running a coaches’ clinic out at Penrith’s Regatta Centre and the other facilitator was Andrea King, the Australian Head Coach of Paracanoe.

months while I’m training,” Sieders said “Any help I receive is greatly appreciated. Triple Eight sent me some signed Craig Lowndes merchandise to use in an auction I had, some of my former competitors have donated, and I have had a lot of support from some fans which is great!” Whilst Sieders is already an established Paralympian, he is itching to return to his motor sport roots once he completes his Rio adventure. “I’m looking forward to getting back in a car after I return from the Paralympics,” Sieders said. “It’s been four years so I can’t wait to have a steer soon.” The Rio Paralympic Games commences on 7 September and concludes 18 September. me and said you need to come over and meet Andrea. That was my introduction to kayaking.” Much like his introduction to motor sport, Sieders took an instant liking to kayayking. Sieders’ career to date includes 11 Australia KL1 Titles and finishing as high as fifth in four World Championships. “Yeah it was great to win the Australian titles in my first year and make the Australian team,” Sieders said. “It has been amazing to travel around the world, competing in some amazing places.” To further add to Sieders’ remarkable CV, he will be representing Australia in the upcoming Rio Paralympics later this month. The exercise of competing comes at a large financial cost for Sieders while he focuses exclusively on his training. “I’m hoping to raise some money to help out with some of the costs that come with not working for the last six

“CAMS continues to work closely with track developers all around the country and we particularly excited about the progress of the Mildura Motor Sport Complex,” Arocca said.

“It is important that regional motor sport is supported at every opportunity and the Ernst & Young report confirmed the economic, sporting and community benefits that flow from tracks built in regional Australia – these tracks help to fill hotel beds, support local businesses and promote tourism generally for those regions that are prepared to invest in track development.

The first steps of developing the circuit have led to preliminary engineering drawings for the raceway and skidpan, forming a major milestone in the development of the final business case and staged development plan for the Mildura Motorsports and Community Facilities Precinct. The bitumen raceway, skidpan and associated infrastructure forms stage one of the staged development program from the Mildura Rural City Council. The design of the circuit is expected to be completed in the near future.

RALLY

WORLD RALLY AUSTRALIA ON TRACK TO BE THE BEST YET New special stages with excellent viewing choices, worldwide live television coverage, greater local support and a more open fight for the FIA World Rally Championship: 2016 Kennards Hire Rally Australia is set to be the best yet in the event’s 25-year history. Rally Australia has also confirmed a new deal with Nine, revealing at least three stages will be televised free-to-air, in conjunction with Foxtel’s existing deal to broadcast all WRC events live. The event on the New South Wales Coffs Coast will take place on 17-20 November, welcoming top manufacturer teams from Europe and the best competitors from around Australia to tackle the 315 kilometre course and 23 stages. Chairman Ben Rainsford said everything was set for another successful event. “Every year since we came to the Coffs Coast in 2011, Rally Australia has grown in popularity, partner support and organisational and presentation standards – last year, it generated a $14.3 million boost to the regional economy,” Rainsford said. “The scheduling of Rally Australia 2016 as the closing round of the WRC season, a calendar position it hasn’t held since 2005, brings new opportunities to develop and popularise the event.

10

“Our new Destination NSW Super Special Stage at the Jetty precinct – literally alongside Coffs Harbour – other special stage enhancements including the exciting Flooded Gum spectator point on the final stage and truly spectacular opening and closing ceremonies will all be highlights for our ticket holders.” While most of the competition roads to the north and south of the Coffs Harbour base are unchanged from 2015, organisers have added a second Super Special Stage at Raleigh, a 1.37 kilometre sprint at a multi-motor sports facility. The contenders in this year’s Rally Australia will also include the Australian crew of Scott Pedder and co-driver Dale Moscatt, who have already distinguished themselves with a fourth-place finish in the WRC2 category this season. Fans will also see the championship battle go down to the wire for top placings in the WRC Drivers’ World Championship. The 2016 WRC season has been the most open since 2012 and while Frenchman Sebastien Ogier is in the box seat to secure a fourth straight title, the diverse challenge of the remaining rounds in France, Spain, Great Britain and Australia could see the competition play out all the way to the podium in Coffs Harbour on 20 November.

Back-to-back wins were claimed by both Peter Major in Modern Competition and Sharon Gunson in Modern Challenge at this year’s Quit Targa West. Major, who is no stranger to the podium, drove his brandnew Porsche 996 Turbo to claim his fourth overall win, with Major and his co-driver Greg Flood completing the 242km race in one hour and 55 minutes.

CIRCUIT

BIGGEST BASKERVILLE HISTORICS YET The 2016 Baskerville Historics aims to be the best yet, with plenty of cars of historical note entered for this year’s event.

“The meeting is run as a 2+4 format, and now includes a rallycross demonstration providing spectators with great variety.

Baskerville Historics has been conducted continuously since 2010 and is now run and promoted as a joint venture between the Hobart Sporting Car Club and the MG Car Club.

“As a result of strong competitor entries the committee is adopting a three-day format for the first time which will ensure the best possible experience for competitors and spectators.”

Many vehicles of historical significance will be entered, such as the 2000 Bathurst 1000 winning Garry Rogers Holden Commodore V8 Supercar and, following an extensive restoration, Bruce Gowans’ Toyota Celica Repco.

The Baskerville Historics is a significant event for the circuit, and for its fundraising efforts via the Baskerville Foundation. The aim of the foundation is to raise sufficient funds to complete numerous essential circuit and infrastructure upgrades, including resurfacing works scheduled for December 2016.

Perhaps the most significant car to appear since the inception of Baskerville Historics, and perhaps one of the world’s most significant racing cars, will be the Chassis Number 1 MRD Formula Junior to be driven by Tasmanian legend Greg Crick. This car is now universally accepted as being the first Brabham racing car and has the official designation Brabham BT1. “Entries are expected to top 250 in 2016 making Baskerville Historics one of the biggest meetings of its type in Australia,” said Bruce Thomas, a member of the event’s Organising Committee.

14

Chaired by Peter Killick, the organising committee includes 10 motor sport enthusiasts from a broad cross section of clubs and motor sport entities. The committee was thrilled to receive the CAMS Tasmanian Event of the Year award in 2015 and is determined to build on this success for 2016. Baskerville Historics 2016 commences with practice and qualifying on Friday September 30 with two packed days of racing on October 1 and 2.

CAMS HISTORY

THE ‘OLYMPIC’ AGP In 1954 it had been held at Southport and in 1955 at the new Port Wakefield track in South Australia. In 1956 it was scheduled to be held in NSW, most likely at Mt Panorama. But weren’t the Olympics too good an opportunity to miss? NSW stood aside and the recently formed Australian Racing Driver’s Club rescheduled Bathurst for 1958. Western Australia was already preparing for 1957. A year out, the Light Car Club had not one but two race meetings planned for Albert Park in 1956. It turned out that this became three because the Olympic races were held over two consecutive weekends. The first would host the Australian Tourist Trophy and the second the AGP. As an emerging nation, far-flung Australia had scored an immense coup to win the right to stage the 1956 Olympic Games. The 16th Olympiad was to be the first ever to be held in the southern hemisphere and the first to be held outside Europe and North America. In 1955 Melbourne inaugurated its Moomba Festival, an annual community celebration, and quick on its feet, the Light Car Club of Australia held the Moomba Races, not a Grand Prix, at Albert Park. Championed by Labor senator Pat Kennelly and heavily promoted by the powerful Argus newspaper, it had been hailed as “the biggest and most exciting single attraction of the whole Moomba Festival”. Lord Mayor Sir Frank Selleck, capitalising on the rush of public enthusiasm, was quick to schedule Moomba again for March 1956, and to book motor racing as a feature. But March? The Olympic Games were to be held in November and December. Why not hold Moomba and the races then? “No” was the official consideration. The entire Moomba Festival would be held six months before the Games as the perfect prelude. And that’s when opportunism stepped in. Since its formation in 1953 CAMS had scheduled the AGP to run on rotation around the states. Albert Park hosted it in 1953 amid public protest and Doug Whiteford had won in his Lago Talbot.

And the dates. Well, they coincided exactly with the Olympic Games. The flag dropped on the Australian TT just three days after 19-year-old Melbourne athletics star of the future Ron Clarke lit the Olympic flame. The TT was won by Stirling Moss (Maserati 300S) from team mate Jean Behra who’d moved over on lap two when Stirling blew his horn. The Grand Prix, the following weekend, was right in the middle of the Games – December 2, with the Games to close on December 8. And there was television. It was Australia’s first broadcast and entertainment would never be the same again. The ABC had rushed two Morris outside broadcast vans from Great Britain and they were commissioned in time for the Melbourne Games. Each ran three gigantic cameras, using valves which needed an hour to warm up. One van would be stationed permanently at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the other would roam to events like cycling, basketball, boxing, swimming – and motor racing. It was more about form than function. The viewing audience in Sydney was one per cent of the population, and in Melbourne, 5 per cent. But what a coup for CAMS.

VALE CHRIS AMON (1943–2016) “It was not until the 70s that I actually competed against him. Perhaps I should say I was in the same race,” Tim Schenken, friend of the Amon family, reflected. “Like many of us from that era, we chatted easily about the races, circuits and teams we drove, and the personalities we met along the way.”

A true hero of motor sport in New Zealand, Amon was a major part of one of the nation’s finest motor sport moments 50 years ago when he teamed up with fellow countryman Bruce McLaren to win the 24 Hour of Le Mans in a Ford GT40 Mark II. Amon was a successful racer in the Tasman Series. One of his finest moments was the duel between he and Grand Prix legend Jim Clark at the 1968 Australian Grand Prix, where Amon finished just 0.1 second behind Clark at the finish line at Sandown. In 1969, Amon sought redemption and claimed the Tasman Series title aboard a Ferrari 246T.

“Like many of us from that era, we chatted easily about the races, circuits and teams we drove” “We were planning to stay a few days with him again this November at the time of the Supercar Pukekohe event. Sadly, we are too late.” Amon stood on a Formula One podium 11 times and achieved five pole positions – he is accepted to be one of the unluckiest drivers in Formula One history and is widely regarded as the greatest driver never to win a race, with victory slipping away on a number of occasions.

VALE GRAHAME WARD (1939–2016) Amongst his passion for collecting Lancias, Ward had been a member of the HQ Racing Association of Queensland and was also instrumental in the creation of the Gemini Series in the mid-1970s. Ward was a confidant to the Brabham family, and David Brabham fondly recalled sharing a car with Ward at Targa Tasmania. “Thinking of the great time I had with Grahame Ward on the Targa Tasmania. No pace notes for the 1.5 days with him navigating,” Brabham said on his Twitter account. After battling a long illness, popular Queensland motor sport personality and participant Grahame Ward passed away on 1 August. Ward was a recipient of the CAMS Service Award in recognition of his strong involvement and dedication to motor sport, both as a competitor and member of CAMS’ Queensland State Council.

“Then we took some pace notes off someone who retired and we went from 25th to 4th. A great friend of dads, Bernie E and the racing world.” Outside of competition, Ward also volunteered his time to the CAMS Scrutineering Advisory Panel in Queensland. CAMS extends it condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Grahame Ward.

SWINBURNE UNIVERSITY CAR CLUB With support from Club Development Fund sponsors Penrite Oil, Burson Auto Parts and Famous Insurance, the club has been able to ensure participation costs remain as low as possible. “CAMS Club Development Funding has helped out massively,” Hallett said. “The money we received basically was enough to cover a significant chunk of our two events. We do quite a bit of fundraising throughout the year to make up some of the costs and to keep event prices, memberships and merchandise cheap!”

The Swinburne University Car Club is one of several car clubs across Australia to benefit from the CAMS Club Development Fund in 2016. “As a student based car club, we’re looking at being a cheap entry point to motor sports,” SUCC President Alex Hallett said. “The aim is to let members, friends and anyone interested in motorkhanas or drifting give it a go on the skid pan.” One of the club’s most recent events was so popularly received, it was oversubscribed within a matter of days. “We’re not taking it easy on them - we’re going to be having some fun and keeping the tests interesting. “The event sold out in two days, so we will be looking to have another one ASAP for the guys who missed out.”

The club affiliated with CAMS in 2015, however it was established in 2012 as a social club within Swinburne University in Victoria. “I was 100 per cent convinced we needed to affiliate with CAMS and start running motor sport events,” Hallett said. “Pravin [Sinnan] (CAMS Victorian Participation Coordinator) from CAMS has been our biggest supporter and we would not have been able to do any of this without him.” Whilst the club has expanded its schedule of events to include motor sport activities, its social culture still remains strong within its membership base. “Throughout the year we host regular carpark meets, drive-in meets, attend track days, have Formula 1 nights at uni where we book out the uni bar and watch racing,” Hallett said. “2016 has been awesome so far, but we plan to go one better for 2017!”

BENTLEY DRIVER’S CLUB Speed Read recently caught up with the Bentley Driver’s Club (Vic region) soon after they became an affiliated car club with CAMS. SR: How long has the Bentley Driver’s Club (Vic) been established for, and how did it all begin? The club has been inactive for a few years but was revived a year ago with a new chairman and secretary/ treasurer. The intention is to work with the Bentley Drivers Club of Australia that concentrates on the WO Bentley of the ‘20s and the Rolls Royce Owners Club that includes all RR and the Bentley models manufactured by RR from the ‘30s. SR: What type of events does your club participate in? We intend to continue to run social drives but we are responsible for organising the bi-annual BDC rally in Victoria in October 2018. This year this rally is in Wollongong, NSW and in 2014 it was held in WA.

Members: 20

Club type: Enthusiast Facebook: @BentleyDriversClubVictoria

SR: What makes your club unique? The BDC-Vic is an official division of the BDC (UK) and as such includes all Bentley vehicles including those designed by WO Bentley and RR. Using electronic communications, essentially email, we will keep our members up-to-date with reports and events of our own as well as from the other clubs. SR: What does it mean for your club to be affiliated with CAMS? It gives us the opportunity to look at the CAMS agenda and events and participate or offer participation to interested members that may, or may not, be members of the other clubs. It also gives us benefits such as insurance coverage for our events. SR: How can someone become a member of your club? It is simply a matter of applying to the secretary for an application. It isn’t a perquisite that a Bentley be owned but to have the interest; future ownership often evolves from this.

JACQUELINE DEVEREAUX ANNOUNCED AS WAMS SINGAPORE EXCHANGE RECIPIENT how international events like the Singapore Grand Prix is run. “I’d really like to thank WAMS and CAMS for this amazing opportunity.” For the past four years, WAMS in partnership with the Singapore Motor Sports Association and support from CAMS has offered the opportunity for a CAMS accredited official to experience a broad range of officiating roles at the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix.

The Women of Australian Motor Sport committee is pleased to announce Jacqueline Devereaux as the 2016 winner of the WAMS Singapore Officials Exchange program. The 33-year-old was chosen for the program for her extensive officiating skills, ranging from communications, flags and sector marshalling. Devereaux is excited for the opportunity to broaden her skills and learn from the experience. “It delights me to see so many more women involved in motor sport today than when I started back in 2003,” Devereaux said. “I have worked with many impressive and inspirational women while officiating over the years and it is great to see even more get involved. “There is always something new to learn at every event and this is an exciting opportunity to see and experience

WAMS Chair Samantha Reid passed on her congratulations and commended all of the women who applied for the 2016 program. “This year saw a record number of applications for the Singapore Exchange Program and we’re so encouraged to see the depth and breath of experience, enthusiasm and commitment of so many women in our officiating ranks,” Reid said. “We are delighted to have Jacqueline represent us in Singapore in 2016 and know that she will gain invaluable experience that she’ll be able to use in developing her own officiating skills and also share with and inspire other Australian officials. Previous recipients of this program include Michelle Luke, Tricia Davidson and Natalie Daish. The Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix will be held under lights at the Marina Bay circuit on 16-18 September. To read more about WAMS and the organisation, head to www.wams.org.au
