Coffs Harbour’s own Nathan Quinn claimed his first CAMS Australian Rally Championship in front of a passionate home-town crowd at the 2017 Kennards Hire Rally Australia. Quinn dominated the national field in the fifth and final ARC round, winning all three legs, taking 12 of 17 stage wins and claiming first outright by a staggering 13 minutes. As an added bonus Quinn, with co-driver Ben Searcy, took it to the best rally drivers in the world, finishing

Quinn said. “Watching my dad compete when I was a kid, this day was the goal from the get go and now I’ve finished that for him.” Amazingly, the 31-year-old revealed that it was only an off-hand comment by fellow driver Eli Evans that made him register for this year’s Australian Rally Championship. “We went to the Eureka Rally to get a seed to do a classic rally we wanted to do,” Quinn explained. “Eli Evans said ‘Quinny, you never know, you should just register for the championship’. So I borrowed $1,500 off my girlfriend and paid it back by June. Then Neal Bates Motorsport helped me get to Perth. Then there was a bunch of Irish lads that chipped in for a new engine.

worked through Saturday night to fix engine damage sustained on the day’s penultimate stage. Clearly gutted by the outcome, Taylor conceded that the team did everything possible to fight for the Championship but it wasn’t to be. “We tried to run… we knew it was going to be a small chance that it would work but we tried everything,” Taylor said. “It’s not the first time we have been bitterly disappointed and it probably won’t be the last. For us we look back on the whole year as a team and we did our absolute best on every rally. We can hold our heads high. “In the end what happened was something that we couldn’t control. It makes us hungrier for next year, we want this more than anything.”

In the outright FIA World Rally Championship standings, it was Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul who claimed victory for the final time in 2017. The pair lead home M-Sport’s Ott Tanak and New Zealand’s Hayden Paddon for the podium. “This one is a special one and really goes to the whole team of Hyundai Motorsport,” Neuville said. “We are not World Champions but we drove like World Champions.” With Quinn the top overall Australian and outright ARC winner, New South Welshman Tom Clarke and co-driver Ryan Preston came through to secure a stellar second outright. Clarke however found the wet and slippery conditions on Sunday extremely challenging. “We really had to back off, we weren’t getting any traction,” Clarke said. “We had a couple of spins, a couple of offs, it was just a bit of a mess.” Maximum Motorsport’s John O’Dowd finished third outright – the West Australian claimed his first ARC podium, took out the ARC2 4WD title and slipped into third in the ARC driver pointscore. “First ARC podium, it’s fantastic. It’s a really good end to the year for the team, we couldn’t be happier,” O’Dowd said. “To take out ARC2 was a bonus, we didn’t expect that but we will take it.” McMRallySport’s Stephen Mee worked hard to improve the reliability of his Toyota Corolla prior to Rally Australia and his hard work paid off with a win in the ARC2 2WD final. “It’s pretty hard to believe. We’ve had so many dramas, engines, gearboxes, driveshafts,” Mee said. “But we’ve sorted that out during the year and its proved to be a good stepping stone. We’ve proved ourselves at one of the hardest events in the country. We are just stoked.” In the ARC Classic Challenge, it was the Irish pair of Michael O’Hagan and Owen Moynihan taking the win in the Ford Escort Mark II ahead of Brett Stephens and Tony Brandon in the Datsun Bluebird and Andrew Hitch and Kenneth Polly in their Mitsubishi Galant. The CAMS Australian Rally Championship will return in 2018 with an expanded six round calendar, starting at Victoria’s Eureka Rally and concluding at Kennards Hire Rally Australia. A new event in Tasmania was also announced, with further information at rally.com.au

It wasn’t good enough to argue that sales of new vehicles in post-war Australia had gone through the roof. Australians bought 156,000 new vehicles in 1952, up from 50,000 just five years before – it was a boom market. Locally made Holdens made up 45,000 of those sales. Each one of them fuelling and fulfilling the great Australian dream – at the same time – creating impressive post-war employment.

They had been charged with the pastoral care of the motoring community. Today, now called social responsibility. They couldn’t blame the motor car – it was state of the art for its time. By today’s standards of course the vehicles of 60 years ago were rudimentary. Somewhat Holden accidentally embraced lightweight

General Motors was churning out the humpy Holden at a rate of more than 100 each working day… eventually there would be seven GMH plants in five states. The nearest they came was metal contraption that hung over the back of the front bench seat to let the junior baby boomer steer along with the parent. But for the time, those cars couldn’t be improved. No one knew a better way.

However, road deaths were rising. There had been less than a thousand in the post-depression years and although they had fluctuated through the war they were at almost exactly the thousand – 1011 to be exact – the year the peace was declared.

The answer lay with the other two pillars of road safety – the state of the roads and the mindset of the driver. The above edited excerpt was taken from pages 36-37 in CAMS:

The Women of Australian Motor Sport (WAMS) recently sent CAMS official Rebecca Armstrong to New Zealand, as part of the Trans-Tasman Female Officials Exchange program, endorsed by both the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship and Women in Motor Sport New Zealand (WiMNZ). WAMS: What learning did you take away from your experience in New Zealand? RA: That the sky is the limit. Don’t settle yourself for one role when you can branch out into many other places. There have been many race meetings where I’ve been standing on my flag point thinking about all of the other roles that are out there… could I one day work in the course or safety car? At Pukekohe I did this and more, just by sitting in the stewards meeting, I gained further insight on how to write my reports. WAMS: Did this opportunity inspire you as an official? RA: It helped reinforce that I love what I do. This sport feels like one big family and when it is required, everyone pulls together. Sometimes when it’s a rough day, when you are standing there by yourself – soaked to the bone, contemplating making the call the step down because it’s become too much – you need that reminder. The Cooma Monaro Historical Automobile Club Inc. has hosted a Come and Try Day amongst a competitive field at the Mount Gladstone Hill Climb. With financial assistance from the CAMS Club Development Fund, the club welcomed 60 drivers to participate in the course. The club’s Assistant Clerk of Course, Chris Reeks, was pleased with the turnout and the format of Saturday’s sessions. “The Come and Try Day went very well. We had 12 competitors, including four juniors,” Reeks said. “The weather was fine so that everyone got a good run. They each had four runs, the juniors with an instructor in the car with them… on average their times came down by 20 to 35 seconds. We have now held two motorkanas and one hill climb for junior competitors this year.” Of the debutants, it was Louise Taylor who improved the most in her Subaru Impreza WRX to set a 57.08s time – some 27.89s faster than her debut run on Saturday. The Come and Try Day also welcomed participants from other sporting codes, with local champion cyclist

Out of the field of Classic competitors, 12 competitors took to the hill and times were supremely close. Matthew Jamieson was quickest aboard his Ford Falcon GT with a time of 49.29s. Fiat X1/9 driver Nick Besestri was Jamieson’s nearest rival for Classic honours. Inclement weather on Sunday’s climb prevented any further record times being set up the hill, with only 38 crews taking part on the final day. Gareth Rees claimed outright honours with a 43.49s time set in his all-wheel-drive Nissan Skyline, barely edging ahead of the 2WD Skyline of Aleksander Zlater’s 43.98 second time.
