Starting in 1976 as a ‘there and back’ challenge for local motorbike riders started with a blast from a shotgun, the event has grown into what is believed to be the largest desert race in the world.
Sunday morning is quite a sight to behold. Finke Desert Race Incorporated Committee President Antony Yoffa is passionate about the event, and equally passionate about the cars and the bikes.
The race runs 226km south of Alice Springs to the Aputula Aboriginal community, site of the old Finke railway settlement, along a winding corrugated track that roughly follows the former Ghan railway line; competitors are faced with red dirt, sand, spinifex, mulga and desert oaks along with the famous ‘whoops’, endless bumps that put man and machine to the test. The return trip to Alice Springs on day two provides a
“I was a bike competitor for 11 years and some people point that out, so I really make a point that both the cars and the bikes make this event,” Yoffa said. “The two are interdependent. The cars are all one-offs; you can’t go to a shop and buy one, they are all purpose built. They are all so different and they attract the sponsorship—sponsors love to see their logo on a pro

The event also provides huge benefits for the Alice Springs region. Alice Springs Town Council Mayor and Finke Desert Race Incorporated Committee Vice President Damien Ryan says the Finke Desert Race provides “unestimated” value to businesses, accommodation providers, restaurants and roadhouses in and out of Alice Springs. “It is the biggest event held in Central Australia,” Ryan said. “On average each bike rider will be accompanied by six family and friends and each car driver by 10 crew. Many stay a week or longer so the total is about 36,000 bed nights.” Last year there were “unprecedented numbers” with 875 competitors, 22,000 paying spectators and 15,000 campers. Interstate competitor numbers reached 716, or 82 per cent of the field. More than $6 million was
FINKE FACT S 1999 was the first year that a ‘car’ beat the bikes home to claim the ‘King of the Desert’ title. Four-wheels beat two again in 2002, 2003 and 2004 before the title was changed to ‘Kings of the Desert’ in 2005, one for cars and one for bikes. The most successful competitor at Finke is David Fellows…he has won it six times — five as driver, one as navigator. Hayden Bentley is the only driver to win the Finke Desert Race with a navigator (2007) and then as a single seat driver (2013). No-one else has done both. Billy Geddes was the first official “Iron Man of Finke”… in 2015 he competed in, and completed, both the car and bike divisions. Only two trucks have ever won the Finke Desert Race — Greg Gartner in the F150 in 2011, and Brad Gallard in the Geiser Bros Trophy Truck in 2012. Every other year a buggy has taken the honours. Shannon Rentsch is the youngest driver to win the Finke Desert Race, just 23 years of age when he won his first in 2005; he also won the event in 2006, 2014, 2015 and 2017.

participation in motor sport by lending its support to the Aussie Racing Cars Women’s Cup presented by CAMS.
Aussie Racing Cars category owner Tony Quinn welcomed the initiative, which he hopes will further boost the numbers of females in the field.
CAMS’ endorsement of the title also extends to two major prizes, which will be presented to the series’ leading lady.
“Aussie Racing Cars has always been about having fun on the race track, and we’re very grateful to have CAMS’ support to encourage more women to get involved,”
Not only will the winner of the Aussie Racing Cars Women’s Cup presented by CAMS be invited to attend the annual CAMS Motor Sport Awards Gala Dinner in Melbourne to receive the trophy, she will also be awarded a $2000 Virgin Australia Travel Voucher. The title represents an elevation in the status of the Ladies’ Cup, which was created in 2016 as a response to the boom in female participation in the driving ranks of the Aussie Racing Cars Series. Category stalwart Ruth Bowler was joined on the grid by Emma Clark, Charlotte Poynting, and Madison Dunston, making Aussie Racing Cars the first national level category to field four female drivers. Bowler last year notched up her 200th race in the category after debuting in 2008, Clark is a long-time state level racer, and both Poynting and Dunston are
Quinn said. “We’re very proud to have the greatest participation of women in any Australian national category, and the more the merrier as far as I’m concerned. CAMS CEO Eugene Arocca said that he was delighted to support Aussie Racing Cars in promoting female participation in the sport. “CAMS is a major supporter of women’s involvement in motor sport and this initiative is further evidence of that support,” Arocca said. “Motor sport is one of the few sports where men and women can compete with each other in the same arena, and we hope that the prize of the Gala Dinner invitation and Virgin Australia voucher will help promote female participation in the sport.”

Just one of the many tips available through the CAMS Resource Centre.
WHY PROMOTE YOUR CLUB?
Car clubs have to promote themselves. There are many other social and voluntary organisations in their area seeking exposure to achieve recognition and attention from the community. Each one of them wants to attract members and sponsorship.
NEWSLETTERS
Building strong relationships between members and the Club is the prime reason for a newsletter program. When written in an interesting and readable manner, it can attract new members to the club.
CLUB WEBSITE
Developing a club website provides the opportunity to reach a constantly growing audience of potential new members. A website allows visitors to be informed of
all of your club’s activity, including recent news and upcoming events.
SOCIAL MEDIA
Social media offers the opportunity for people to gather within online communities of share interest and create, share or consume content. The benefits of social media are an important tool for the promotion of motor sport as well as your club.
