Presented by Burson Auto Parts, the State and National Awards saw competitors, officials, motor sport fans and administrators come together in the past month to celebrate the events and achievements which made 2017 such a successful year. The series of functions culminated in the CAMS National Gala Awards, held at Melbourne’s iconic Crown Palladium on 17 February.
CA M S .COM.AU
CAMS President Andrew Papadopoulos congratulated all the award winners from grassroots through to our national champions. “When we look back on 2017, we were lucky enough to witness some amazing achievements both on and off the track,” Papadopoulos said. He said the commitment of those at the grassroots level had been a particular highlight throughout the past 12 months.
“Grassroots motor sport is alive and well and is the cornerstone of our sport. CAMS is committed to its support of the grassroots and we are focused on ensuring that support is meaningful and continuing.” A full list of award winners from both National and State level are listed in this month’s Speed Read.

BATES CLAIMS GOLD AT THE COURIER EUREKA RALLY Toyota Genuine Parts’ Harry Bates and John McCarthy have won The Courier Eureka Rally, giving the Toyota Yaris AP4 its maiden CAMS Australian Rally Championship (ARC) round victory. Bates took out heat wins on both Saturday and Sunday to claim 11 of 15 stages, finishing heat two 28 seconds ahead of Contel Communications’ Steve Glenney and Michael Potter. The competition on day two of the event was fierce with the top five competitors within two and a half seconds of each other after the first stage. The victory gives Bates and McCarthy back-to-back wins in Ballarat, as well as an early lead in the championship. “Coming here and winning 11 out of 15 stages certainly exceeded our expectations,” Bates said.
16
“If I could have come here and just won a few (stages) I would have been happy. So yeah, it’s been sort of a dream weekend I guess.” Steve Glenney made a stellar return to the ARC as a driver after a tenyear absence, claiming second for the round with a string of fast and consistent stage times. Tankformers Eli Evans and new codriver Ben Searcy rounded out the podium in their first event together, finishing Sunday’s heat in fourth position behind Glen Raymond and Kate Catford but with enough points from heat one to claim third overall for the round. Victorian Glen Raymond bounced back after a horror day one, that included two flat tyres and a broken differential, to post the second fastest times in two of the afternoon stages and claim third in heat two.
Subaru do Motorsport’s Molly Taylor and Malcolm Read had a run of bad luck across both days, with a puncture on day one and damage to the Impreza WRX Sti on the Sunday the former Championship winner collided with a kangaroo. In the ARC 2WD championship, reigning champions Adam Kaplan and Aleshia Penny took out the round win by just one point from Jason Lennae and Amanda Ramia. Haowen Chu and Xinan Mao, who claimed third. Round two of the CAMS ARC heads to the west for the Make Smoking History Forest Rally on 27-29 April in Busselton.

The 2018 Formula 1 season has undergone considerable change in the off-season, with a new logo and branding associated with the championship. However the most obvious addition has been the Halo device, now compulsory in Formula 1 and Formula 2.
Daniel Ricciardo hit the ground running in the first day of winter testing in Barcelona, to set the initial fastest time with reliable running.
While the design has been met with a mixed reaction, the Halo is expected to be further refined as it makes its first introduction to openwheel racing over time.
“Performance? Yeah, it’s nice to see yourself at the top of the timesheets but in two-degree temperatures you really can’t learn anything,” Ricciardo said.
18
The Australian Grand Prix will also pay tribute to Ron Walker, former Australian Grand Prix Corporation Chairman, who passed away in late January. On track will be a variety of categories, with the Ferrari Challenge (Asia Pacific) making its first appearance, Australian GT, Porsche Carrera Cup, a historic parade, and the popular ultimate speed comparison. For the first time in Supercars’ history, the Grand Prix will run as a formal round of the championship as the Melbourne 400. On-track action will get underway from Thursday 22 March, with the Grand Prix to run on Sunday 25 March.

RICCIARDO'S RACERS REGISTRATIONS OPEN CAMS has recently opened registrations for its junior driver development programme, Ricciardo’s Racers. The popular initiative enters its fourth year, off the back of another record year of junior participation in 2017.
Typically held across school holiday periods, Ricciardo’s Racers is conducted in a safe and friendly environment for 12–17 year olds. Coaches include professional driving instructors and race drivers such as Karl Reindler and Tony D’Alberto.
Ten events across six states will be conducted, beginning at Victoria’s Sandown Raceway on Sunday 8 April. Ricciardo’s Racers also expands to three levels of skill this year, with an all new ‘Level Three: Track’ element catering for those who have previously participated in the programme.
A full list of events and a link to register can be found at the Ricciardo’s Racers page.
RICCIARDO'S RACERS GRADUATE VOTED BEST NEW TALENT IN TAS At just 15 years of age, Josh Webster is showing that he is a force to be reckoned with. The past graduate of the CAMS Ricciardo’s Racers program was awarded the Ling Rookie trophy at the CAMS Tasmanian awards night, an award which recognisines the best new talent among first year competitors, voted by the commentary teams at Baskerville and Symmons Plains.

THE BEND’S MOTOR SPORT DEBUT NEARS In just over a month, Australia’s newest track will get its first taste of competitive action. The Bend Motorsport Park will host Round 1 of the 2018 Shannons Nationals, with a number of high profile categories taking to the track on 13 April. CAMS CEO Eugene Arocca and CAMS Manager – Track Safety Bruce Keys joined Dr Sam Shahin, the man behind the project, in a recent tour of the facility. CAMS has been a supporter of the project since it was first mooted, including securing FIA approval for the venue and working with the South Australian government to locate an appropriate site and design. "CAMS has been an amazing organisation to deal with. They have provided guidance and support from day one," Shahin said. "I have to single out Eugene and Bruce for their tireless work over the last few years. Motor sport in Australia owes so much to the likes of those gentlemen. “They believed in the vision for The Bend from day one and I can honestly say that the development would not have come to fruition without their input.
22
With elements of the circuit coming to life such as pit buildings and the laying of tarmac, Dr Shahin is proud to see the project nearing its completion. "I am the proudest man in Australia, albeit the most anxious all at the same time," he added. "We have performed the occasional miracle constructing the circuit and pit complex in under 12 months and it looks amazing. There are still 350 construction workers on site right now working furiously to complete the pit building and the massive infrastructure supporting it. "The summer has been harsh though, hot and windy December was followed with an even hotter January as we’ve experienced across Australia and that has prevented us from manicuring the site... we need a solid winter under our belt to present to the world the final proud product.
even at 80kmh, it was absolutely sensational,” Arocca said. “The various configurations of the circuit will make the Bend an iconic track that competitors of all levels will gravitate to.” Arocca said while the track itself was obviously the key component of the development, the surrounding facilities also impressed. “Everything from the hotel accommodation to the pits was world class. You would find it hard to find another facility that will match The Bend for the complete motor sport package. “Sam and the Peregrine Corporation are to be congratulated for acting on a vision that is a game changer in Australian motor sport.”
"I hope the motor sport world will be both patient and forgiving of the dry nature of the terrain when they visit soon." Arocca said he had been “blown away” by the setup of the venue. “Sam took me for a drive on the completed circuit and I must say

TWENTY YEARS OF THE ADELAIDE 500 Shane van Gisbergen and his new ZB Commodore have dominated the streets of Adelaide in front of big crowds over the weekend.
McLaughlin finished third in race one, but a stray bolt on the circuit left the Kiwi with a right front puncture and destroying his shot at a race win.
The Red Bull driver banked 300 championship points at the Adelaide 500 season opener, holding off challenges from James Courtney and David Reynolds in both 250km races.
Hundreds of CAMS officials were on hand to ensure the 20th edition of the Adelaide 500 was yet another success, with almost 100,000 spectators on hand to witness Sunday’s action on the streets of the South Australian capital.
It was a tough weekend for fellow title contenders Jamie Whincup and Scott McLaughlin, with Whincup hampered by a transmission failure while leading Sunday’s race.

SHOWCASING AUSTRALIA TO THE WORLD
Q&A
Australia is blessed to have some of the world’s best officials.
Speed Read: Why did you travel to Abu Dhabi?
Such is their experience and understanding of motor sport, their expertise are often sought out at motor sport events around the world.
Rhys Carleton-Carlos: I have a desire to attend overseas motor sport events to gain an understanding on event process at other circuits, assist in delivering a safe and successful result and improve my skill set.
Ahead of this month’s Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix, Speed Read caught up with CAMS Official Rhys CarletonCarlos, who provided his skills at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Through the network of National and International officials that work Australian events I managed to secure a Pit Marshals role at the 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. In 2017 I was fortunate to return to Abu Dhabi and worked in the F1 Pit Lane as Deputy Pit Chief. SR: What did you make of the circuit in Abu Dhabi? RCC: The event is held at the purpose built Yas Marina Circuit and the facilities are amazing. The Pit Lane is wider than most experienced in Australia and Race Control was the true theatre experience.
26
All up a team of 50 run the Formula 1 pit and grid and there are an additional team that look after the support paddock, located at a separate part of the circuit.
SR: How did the opportunity come about?
RCC: Automobile & Touring Club of the United Arab Emirates (ATCUAE) manage the event and run training days for new recruits and experienced marshals prior to the event as a qualifying process. Prior to being accepted for the role I had to supply a letter of introduction from CAMS and successfully complete a Pit Lane Test which was good fun. The officials at the event represent many countries from around the globe and the Sunday morning briefing was a little different to that of the Australian Grand Prix, as there was a fair amount of music and dancing in the lead up to the formalities. It’s a wonderful experience to be part of the global motor sport community.
The Sunday morning briefing was a little different to that of the Australian Grand Prix, as there was a fair amount of music and dancing in the lead up to the formalities.
CA M S .COM.AU
SR: Any similarities between the Abu Dhabi and Melbourne events?
and the tyre testing days post the event. SR: Any advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps?
RCC: The event runs over three days and, in some ways, it felt like being in Melbourne during the GP3, F2 and Formula 1 practice, qualifying and race events as the starting process was similar.
RCC: If you are looking at traveling overseas for an event my advice would be to work on developing your skills as an official and get involved in the CAMS training programs so that you stand out from the crowd.
Our team had the opportunity to operate the Starting Grid (Digital) Panels for the two GP3 and two F2 events prior to Sunday’s Formula 1 event - in Melbourne our first and only opportunity to use the same technology is the start of the F1 race on Sunday.
Plan a couple of years ahead and start connecting with the relevant national sporting authority (NSA) to find out who to contact, what events are available and what skills are required. The investment is significant but the outcome is amazing.
The event was an amazing experience and I would like to thank ATCUAE, Scott Petrie, Andrea Skyring and the wonderful group of officials that I worked with over the weekend

GLENNEY LEADS TARGA CHAMPIONSHIP Steve Glenney and Andy Sarandis have taken out the opening round of the CAMS Australian Targa Championship at Targa North West. The Subaru pair led across final five stages to finish clear of Paul Stokell and Jason Page (Lotus Exige) by just under four minutes, with Tony Quinn and Kate Catford claiming third, a further 52 seconds back in a Porsche 911 Turbo. GT2 frontrunners Paul Stokell and Jason Page extended their opening day, 37 second lead over Peter Nunn and Keith Johnstone in a Porsche GTS, to take out the class by a minute and a half. Alan Roe and Michael Lloyd finished third. Glenney and Sarandis also took the honours in GT4, with Crichton Lewis and Adam Kudra finishing second, also in a Subaru WRX Sti almost ten minutes back. Nathan and Nicholas Stokes finished third, to make it a Subaru trifecta on the podium. For Glenney, who is also experienced in the passenger seat as a co-driver in the Australian Rally Championship, he was thrilled at how the car performed over the whole weekend.
3 2
"The weekend went well, brand new car, reliable, fast, safe and easy to drive as ever, so great weekend and good to get a good result, and Andy did a fantastic job next to me," Glenney said. "It was a great podium result; one, two, three for Subaru, so the Buckby boys are going well." It was a tremendous weekend for Graham Copeland and Josh Herbert in their 1941 GMC Jimmy Special, as they led from start-to-finish to take out Shannons Classic by a margin of eight minutes 29 seconds. "It's awesome; it's my first Targa North West title and Josh did such a fantastic job also," Copeland said. "The roads were fantastic; the Hellyer Gorge North stage is probably the best Targa stage I've ever done." The 1975 Holden Torana of Michael and Daniel Bray extended their overnight lead to take out Shannons Classic GT comfortably by almost 12 minutes from Mick Downey and Jarrod Van Den Akker in a 1977 Holden Commodore, with Geoff Goodwin and Phillip Smith third.
Just 14 seconds separated Tony Quinn and Kate Catford in their Porsche 911, and Jon Mitchell and Joshua Sutcliffe in a Subaru WRX after the opening day in Early Modern. Quinn dominated the final day, increasing his lead over today's five stages to claim victory by 55 seconds. Richard Woodman and Marcus Towle have taken out the GT Sports Trophy in a Subaru WRX Sti. They increased their lead over Geoff Storr and Steve Caplice in their 1978 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV at every stage today, to take out the class by over 16 minutes. In TSD Trophy it was Jeffrey Wilson and Ian Samson in a Subaru WRX Sti who finished well clear of Luke Anear and Alan Stephensen in a Ford Focus RS. Glenney, and co-driver Sarandis, lead the Modern Outright Championship. The Bray brothers lead the Classic Outright standings. Round Two of the 2018 Australian Targa Championship is the running of Targa Tasmania from 16th - 21st April.

FLYING THE FLAG IN SUPERKARTS Victorian Jordan Ford has reflected on his record-breaking two seasons racing Superkarts in Europe, which saw him become the first Australian to win a European Championship in 2017. Ford’s journey to international success began in 2016, by winning the British Superkart Grand Prix. Keen to back up that title, Ford embarked on an extensive European campaign throughout 2017. “It’s always been a dream to race the top level in karting and superkarting, and that is Europe,” Ford said. “The calibre of racing is close, fierce and the fields are dense with talent.
3 6
"There are a variety of manufacturers and drivers from all different countries. “As a team, we really surprised ourselves being able to match the pace and beat the Europeans on their home turf though. It shows the talent is huge in Australia.” The opening round at Donington started strongly for Ford, with prior knowledge from the previous year giving the Australian a head start in his preparations. “I had a lot more expectations on myself to perform… Russell Anderson Prepared a new kart and motor for the European Championships and it was quick straight away,” Ford said.
“I lowered my own lap record in the first round of the European Championship, on the way to a win and also had a commanding lead until the final lap of the British GP until a frayed ignition wire took us out of contention.” Ford expanded his portfolio of circuits he has now raced on, adding Assen and Le Mans to his list. “It was incredible to be on such a fast and historical track, [Assen] is now probably one of my favorite tracks for its fast flowing nature,” Ford said. “Taking two wins in both the races in front of an 80,000 crowd was phenomenal.”

The Victorian paid tribute to his support network in Australia, who were instrumental in setting up his European connections. “None of the domination would be possible without Scott Williams and the Williams Racing team here in Australia, organising and sourcing these opportunities with Russell Anderson and Matt Morell at Anderson Racing in the UK,” Ford added. “Dale Williams who came with us from Australia also spent a huge amount of time preparing and maintaining the kart in Europe.” Amongst his European schedule, Ford managed to squeeze in some

track time in Australia – which he is eager to continue this year. “2017 remained a quiet year in Australia for myself, but we used local state meetings to test and develop some parts,” he said. “Racing the Australian Festival of Superkarts at Phillip Island was a highlight here, lowering lap records to times competitive with the V8 Supercars. “Hopefully 2018 brings more opportunities to race locally, especially around the new Tailem Bend Circuit. “Racing the Twin Cylinder International Superkarts is the
next step and dream that we will work towards in the coming year, but until then we will focus on the Mono Cylinder Class which we have conquered, and bring more people into the sport and hard racing.” Despite losing his British GP title on his way to the European title, Ford is aiming to reclaim it in 2018. “We plan as a team to head back to the UK and get our British GP title back, as we came so close to winning it back to back last year. “There will be a pause on the European Championship for the Mono class for this year but 2019 could see it back on the cards for Williams Racing.”

SIDEBYSIDE ENTRIES OPEN Championship and round entries for the 2018 CAMS Australian Side-By-Side (SXS) Championship have now opened. Consisting of six rounds of fast paced off road action, the opening round will be held on 14 April at Adelaide Motorsport Park, South Australia. There’s plenty of track time for crews, with a minimum of five heats per event. The SXS Australian Championship is one of the newest championships on the Australian motor sport calendar. It features a mix of jumps and high speed tracks from motocross, combined with the grunt and armour of 4×4 dual-seat off road vehicles. 2017 Champion Ewan McClue dominated last season with three event wins ahead of 2016 Champion Cody Crocker.

CAMS HISTORY
ALBERT PARK Adelaide had progressed the Australian Grand Prix to a level few could have imagined. It had been a massive success and one that was noticed in at least one other Australian city.
As early as 1990, there were suggestions that there were some in the Melbourne business community who had coveted the event. Those grew louder in 1991, when the Victorian government set up the Victorian Major Evens Corporation (VMEC). The VMEC’s charter was to attract new sporting and cultural events to the state and expand the resources of those that were already held in the region. In the motor sport community, a number of venues were suggested. Some supported Calder Park or the extended and redeveloped Sandown track. There was also talk of a temporary track circuit to be built near Avalon but none
of the suggestions appeared to have any realistic traction in the early 1990s. The question as to where the race could be held remained unanswered. The answer lay within the confines of the race’s history. By the 1980s, Albert Park’s sporting facilities were not what they had once been, and looked in dire need of some repair and updating. The man who appeared best equipped to encourage appropriate action by several layers of government was Ron Walker. Walker was a Melbourne businessman, formerly Lord Mayor of the city and also past national treasurer of the Liberal party.
portfolio, serious approaches were made to FOM’s Bernie Ecclestone in mid-1993. By the spring, approval had been given and in December, Premier Kennett announced that the race would be Victoria’s in 1997. However, this target was soon amended to March 1996. There were some important changes to the track since the 1950s, most obvious being that it ran in the opposite direction to the previous anti-clockwise circuit. Part of the track was re-profiled to move the pit straight whist extending the length of the track by 276 meters. A concrete pit-lane and permanent building, housing large pit garages, administrative offices, a media centre and corporate facilities was built to host the Australian Grand Prix for at least the next two decades.
With the Liberal government intent on boosting the state’s sporting
