NATI ONA L T IT LES, S O FA R CAMS AUSTRALIAN HILL CLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP
Brett Hayward has taken the 2017 CAMS Australian Hill Climb Championship, defeating last year's champion Malcolm Oastler at Collingrove. The Victorian was elated about his third title, with this win even more special after recovering from a severe back injury that occurred in December 2016. “It’s very rewarding. It’s been a bit of a challenge with a push bike accident, of all things, last year. So to come out and win an Australian Championship again has been very rewarding,” Hayward said. Click here to read more.
CAMS AUSTRALIAN MOTORKHANA CHAMPIONSHIP
Last year’s Australian Motorkhana Champion Scott Bennett successfully defended his title in his Turben Mini Special, making it his fourth consecutive title since 2014. Hosted by the South Eastern Automobile Club, the 46th running of the Championship was held in Mount Gambier, South Australia. Bennett is now the fourth driver in Australian Motorkhana Championship history to have a total of six Motorkhana Championships to their name, joining Alan McConnell, Geoff Thomson and David Beames. Click here to read more.
BFGOODRICH CAMS AUSTRALIAN OFF ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP Fourth outright at the season finale in Rainbow was enough for Matthew Martin to claim the 2017 BFGoodrich CAMS Australian Off Road Championship. The margin was fine with only two points separating Martin and runner-up Chris Browning after three rounds. Martin put his championship win down to consistency throughout the year. “You have to be reliable; Chris has been reliable, I’ve been reliable, his blown tyre at the start of the year probably cost him, but you’ve got to be consistent,” Martin said. “I’ve never really thought about winning the outright championship; I won the class championship a few years back and we had the chance this year with Shannon (Rentsch) and Jack (Rhodes) missing the first round. It’s one to tick off the list.” Chris Clarke claimed outright co-driver honours.

AUSTRALIAN SIDE BY SIDE CHAMPIONSHIP Broadford’s State Motorcycle Complex hosted the final round of the SXS Australian Championship, producing some of the closest racing of the year. Six heats in slippery conditions determined the fate of the overall classification across Superlite A and Superlite B. Ivan Szkut stormed home in Superlite A, collecting 185 points in the second half of the season, to win ahead of 2017 rookie Daniel Mckenzie. In Superlite B, Ewan McClue dominated the season with three event wins ahead of 2016 Champion Cody Crocker.

win one… it’s one of the greatest feelings I’ve ever had in my life. I was pretty emotional,” Rowe said.
After seven rounds across both sides of Australia, AGI Sport’s Nick Rowe broke Team BRM’s streak of championships for his and the Sydney squad’s first Formula 4 title.
The West Australian was surprised to also learn of an invitation to test a Brad Jones Racing Supercar later this year as reward for claiming the title.
The season finale took place on the streets of the Gold Coast, with New Zealander Liam Lawson finishing runner-up to Rowe. Queenslander Cameron Shields finished third. “I’ve waited this moment my whole life. I’ve come second about four or five times in Australian Championships, and to finally
“It’s been fantastic to see Nick come up as a champion,” Jones said. “As part of that, with the relationship BJR have with CAMS, we’ve offered an opportunity for Nick to come along and do an evaluation day for us in December. Nick, I look forward to seeing you soon.”
AUSTRALIAN GT CHAMPIONSHIP
PORSCHE CARRERA CUP AUSTRALIA
Emery entered the Sandown weekend with a 28-point deficit to Liam Talbot, but overhauled the Porsche in the penultimate race of the weekend and year.
The 34-year-old sealed the 20 point victory, dedicating the series win to his late father, Des Wall.
Geoff Emery has won his first Australian GT Championship, after a dramatic finale at Sandown in September.
It was a particularly meaningful victory for the Audi driver after an injury that ruled him out of competition for much of 2016. “From what happened last year to come back and do that this year is fantastic,” said Emery. “There’s been a lot of tough times trying to come back and get back on the horse again, and a lot of physical challenges, a lot of mental challenges. There’s been so much going on in my life to get this all together in my life and to come back.”
David Wall claimed his maiden Porsche Carrera Cup Australia series title on the streets of Gold Coast.
"It's emotional for a lot of different reasons... I lost my father five years ago and I've been looking for something to dedicate to him, this is all his," Wall said. "If he was here I'm sure he'd be pumped.” Wall battled right to the final race of the season with Andre Heimgartner, who finished runner-up for the season ahead of Alex Davison in third.

PORSCHE GT3 CUP CHALLENGE
Following in the footsteps of Cup Challenge graduate Matt Campbell, West Australian Jordan Love is this year’s GT3 Cup Challenge winner. The Jamey Blaikie Scholarship recipient, supported by Porsche Australia, has also stepped up to Carrera Cup in the final rounds of 2017. “Making the move from GT3 Cup Challenge to Carrera Cup is hugely exciting and probably the biggest challenge of my motor racing career so far,” Love said. “It has been a great season for me and to race as the second ever Australian Porsche Junior (scholarship winner) has been an honour.”
AUSTRALIAN PROTOTYPE SERIES
Mark Laucke has become the inaugural Australian Prototype Series winner, his second national title in similar machinery. The South Australian had to endure an up-and-down weekend at the season finale at Phillip Island to secure the championship. Laucke ultimately capped off his consistent season with a storming drive through the field in the final race of the year to put an exclamation mark on his year. Chris Sutton was runner-up aboard his Radical and third place went to Terry Peovitis.
NATIONAL SPORTS SEDAN SERIES
The Muscle Car Masters hosted the final round of the National Sports Sedan Series at Sydney Motorsport Park, with Birol ‘Billy’ Cetin claiming season honours. Michael Robinson was runner up ahead of third place getter Steve Lacey. Cetin also claimed the NSW Sports Sedans state title for this year. Supercars endurance driver Jack Perkins was fourth in the standings, after scoring no points in the Sydney finale with mechanical dramas plaguing his weekend.
V8 TOURING CAR SERIES
Brad Jones Racing’s Jack Smith has won his first Australian title, claiming the Kumho Tyre V8 Touring Car title at Sydney Motorsport Park. Smith secured the championship on Saturday’s opening race, with 140 points eventually separating the Brad Jones Racing driver from his nearest rival Tyler Greenbury. “It feels amazing to get my first national title and in sort of a spectacular fashion by running out of fuel on the line,” Smith said.
I feel like we’ve come a long way and made a massive step for the future.”
“We’ve been working on our opening laps all year and I’m happy with how that [race] went… It means a lot to wrap the title up, to me, the family and the team. It was a massive step for us and
The Super2 Series finale at Newcastle will be Smith’s next focus, where he’ll be competing alongside fellow Formula 4 graduate Will Brown.

I usually work across a couple of roles, most often either a communicator in CAMS Race Control or as a flag marshal depending on the circuit and the event. I enjoy the teamwork in being an official… being part of a small team, which is part of a bigger team. I get to travel to different circuits and meet new people who are all equally as passionate about motor sport and do their best at keeping competitors safe. The best events to officiate at are the club and state level rounds where you get to speak to the drivers, get to know them and their cars. Drivers are always appreciative of the work the volunteer officials do and many come and say thanks either individually or as a group at the end of a race meeting.

I’ve been lucky enough to be Chief Flags for the last couple of years at the event, managing a small but very enthusiastic group of people who make the long trek from Perth and back. It’s one event I don’t want to miss in the motor sport calendar each year! Outside of motor sport my day job is to manage all the IT and infrastructure for a not-for-profit training organisation. Motor sport officiating is so far removed from my day job, which makes it a challenge and a pleasure.
