The Route to Skiing Nirvana If you’re a skier or snowboarder, you’ve likely dreamt of it: standing atop a majestic peak, a perfect, untracked blanket of snow laid out before you – yours for the taking. And while some think of heli-skiing as a once in a lifetime experience, those who’ve had a taste always want more.

LIES

30 years of defining mountain style WRITTEN BY Lisa Richardson

Established in 1986, CAN-SKI’s part of Whistler Blackcomb’s trend-setting history has been to outfit generations of mountain-goers in the latest sporting equipment, outerwear and après apparel.

F

rom the neon years, when skiers embraced fashion’s attention-getting day-glo, onepieces, headbands and zinc sunscreen, to snowboarding’s low-key neutrals and lowerslung pants, mountain style’s pendulum has continued swinging. CAN-SKI’s team relishes uncovering each season’s trends and break-throughs, travelling the globe to source the most unique and exclusive brands in the snow sports world. Favourites like Bogner, Kjus, and Canada Goose hang next to emerging European names like Frauenschuh, Luis Trenker and Fusalp. Mountain stalwarts Arc’teryx, The North Face, Spyder, Descente, Mountain Force and Peak Performance, are represented beside freshly scouted brands the CAN-SKI team deem worth early-adopting! From luxe looks to sport and backcountry fashion, to casual or chic après-wear, CANSkis’ five stores provide the full gamut.

10 CAN-SKI

Selection and service combine for a distinctive shopping experience, which can take an even more bespoke twist with custom boot fitting, private viewings, personal shopping and exclusive events available. This winter, the CAN-SKI Alpine store in the Fairmont Chateau goes all in for yin, dedicating its entire space to women’s apparel – both on and off-piste. Says Chandra Eyton, Whistler Blackcomb’s energetic ski outerwear, apparel and footwear buyer, “Trends for this season are warm and wearable pieces. Colours are richer and warmer – we’re seeing rich blues and purples, and tonal outfits with matching pant and jacket. Ski apparel seems to be trending back now to more slim and tapered cuts, and one piece suits are re-emerging.” Insulating layers have been perfected. With minimal loft, and maximum toasty-comfort factor, ski jackets now do double duty as an

après piece, an urban accessory or the ultimate carry-on travel companion. Second layering pieces – in merino wool, fleece or a blend of both, will be the season’s must-have pieces, as functional winter layers, spring statements, or lounging around the lodge. Outfitting discerning resort visitors is a top-to-toe commitment for CAN-SKI with a growing range of après footwear in store this year. Technical, waterproof and fashionforward, fall 2015’s range is a bonanza for shoe fetishists who want all-weather practicality without sacrificing style. Mountain style has always had a distinctive look. There’s never been a better time to make it yours. Welcome to winter 2016.

T

he first time Wayne Wong and Mike Douglas were on a photo shoot together was in 2006. Twenty years and the twintip revolution separated them, but they lined up shoulder to shoulder on Powder magazine’s 35th anniversary cover, alongside the likes of Sarah Burke, Glen Plake, Tanner Hall, to share acclaim as two of the 48 greatest skiers of our time.

Fast forward 10 years, and the pair were reunited for another celebratory round-up, this time, with a host of Whistler Blackcomb’s most iconic names – including Diamond Jim McConkey, Eric Pehota, John Smart, Mark Abma, Ashleigh McIvor and Julia Murray. The “Legends and Icons” photo shoot melded generations and genres, a testament to Whistler Blackcomb’s influence in shaping ski and snowboard culture over its 50 year story, drawing trendsetters, groundbreakers, style makers, and innovators into its orbit of awesomeness.

Wayne Wong, 66, the original Hotdogger A contest to name “the greatest skier in the country” lured 21 year old ski instructor Wayne Wong out of his classes at Vancouver Community College, to Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, in 1971. Wong didn’t win the first ever National Championships of Exhibition Skiing, but he laid down his best tricks, came 3rd, and was handed $1000 in prize money, launching his pro skiing career on the spot. He was officially a hotdogger, at the vanguard of a new movement in skiing: freestyle. Creative, playful, dynamic, and a master technician, Wong invented a host of tricks - the Worm Turn, the Slow Dog Noodle, The Outrigger, the Wong-Banger and the Wongmill. He won the first ever freestyle titles, and has been inducted into both the Canadian and US Ski Halls of Fame. But that all came after he first tested himself against the newly opened Whistler Mountain. “In my high school, the classrooms all faced the North Shore mountains and I was just

drooling. I couldn’t wait to get out of class and go night skiing. Our runs were so short, we all dreamed about going to some of big ski areas. When Whistler opened, we kids just had to get up there and see what it was all about. We’d get 5 or 6 guys, jump in the car at 5 o’clock in the morning, make the trek up to Whistler and ski our brains out until the lifts closed, then we’d leave at 5pm and not be home until 9 o’clock at night. And it was fantastic.” 6 years later, Wong, now one of the biggest names in skiing, was asked to launch the freestyle component of Whistler’s Toni Sailer summer glacier skiing camps. The ripple effect of his almost 20 years coaching the camp was massive. He taught a generation of up and coming freeskiers, including Mike Douglas, a 10 year old Shane McConkey, and a 15 year old Dave Murray, who would go on to become one of the Crazy Canucks, retire from ski racing to direct skiing and the summer camps at Whistler, and spawn a talented little ski grommet named Julia Murray. CAN-SKI 79

Icons Of Style, Legends Of The Free Fall

Mike Douglas, 46, Godfather of the New School Mike Douglas invented a few tricks too, including the eponymous D-spin, and logged a decade of summers coaching on the glacier. As part of the new Canadian Air Force, he brain-trusted the 1080 twin-tip ski, a gamechanging innovation in skiing that revitalized a rut-stuck sport, and he threw down some of the first game-changing moves, too. Douglas had ditched out of University in the late 80s to head to Whistler. Blackcomb was newly opened, he was spinning laps by himself. “I kept seeing three of the best skiers I’d ever seen under Solar Coaster chair, so I slowed down to let them catch up to me and followed them and finally they talked to me.” Those skiers where national team freestyle members John Smart, Lane Barrett, and Bronwen Thomas. Douglas would go on to compete with them, and later to coach the Canadian Freestyle Team. The following year, Greg Stump arrived to film with Glen Plake, Scot Schmidt and Mike Hattrup. “Right here, my heroes, skiing the same terrain as me. I thought it was the coolest thing I’d ever seen.” Yes, Whistler was the best ski area Douglas had ever experienced but it was more than the terrain that made it big. “It was the people. They thought big. I came from a small town where people were always telling you, ‘No, not like that, this is how things are done, do it this way.’” That didn’t happen in Whistler. Not ever. 80 CAN-SKI

Mike Douglas jumping the Waterfall by Paul Reynolds (1986) “This was taken on my second trip to Whistler. I was 16 years old and on a one-week visit to the resort. I’d always wanted to jump the Waterfall, and after 4 stormy powder days in a row the skies finally cleared and my dream came true. Note the sunglasses and goggles on backward - that's how Scot Schmidt was wearing them at the time. The photo ended up winning Ski Magazine's readers photo contest a few months later and was the first photo I ever had published in a major magazine. I knew I had to find a way to move to Whistler, and two years later I did.”

Wayne won this car in Jackson Hole. First prize 1974 Eastern National Free-Style Skiing Championships.

Julia Murray, 26, Olympian, Whistler Progeny

Julia, age 4

Wayne doing a flip at the Toni Sailer Summer Camp in 1974. The photo was taken by Chris Speedy and hung in the Keg restaurant when it was on Alta Lake. You can see the old roundhouse in the distance and a signature from the Keg in the lower right hand corner.

“Whistler is the most supportive community you could ask for,” says Julia Murray. Olympian and World Championship Silver medalist, the Whistler-bred ski racer was one of the first competitors in the new freestyle discipline of ski cross. Her dad, Dave Murray, ski raced in the 1976 and 1980 Olympics. Her mom, Stephanie Sloan, was a three-time freestyle World Champion, before freestyle was an Olympic sport. “There was some pressure growing up to follow in their steps, but I took it as an inspiration and point of pride. Once I took up Ski Cross, that was my chance to carve my own path. Freestyle and racing all in one? Perfecto.” Perfect, too, was the fact that the debut of Ski Cross as an Olympic sport would take place in her hometown’s Olympics – an event the resort was dreamed up for, 50 years ago. “In it’s purest form, ski cross is what we did naturally on the mountains as kids – racing each other to the bottom while hitting jumps on the sides of the run and dodging people!” Murray points to other Whistler “babies” who she grew up with – 2010 gold medalist Ashleigh McIvor, fellow Olympian Davey Barr, 2014 gold medalist Marielle Thompson. “Ski Cross is a natural product of growing up on Whistler Blackcomb.”

Hotdoggers, newschoolers, freestylers, freeskiers – all we’re really talking about are the most free-spirited, playful skiers on the mountain. That’s what defines the greatest skier ever – the one having the most fun, in the best possible style. And that’s something any of us can achieve.
