The HISTORY of CAN-SKI Established in 1986, the CAN-SKI stores are part of Whistler’s pioneering history. Providing customers with a one-stopshop for world-class sporting equipment and après apparel, CAN-SKI is synonymous with the passion that drives the resort it services. For nearly thirty years the team at CANSKI have been traveling the globe to bring their customers the most unique and exclusive brands in the snow sports world. Favourites like Bogner and Kjus, hang next to emerging brands like Frauenschuh, Toni Sailer and Mountain Force. Each item is hand picked, vetted and tested before it hits the shelves. The CAN-SKI shopping experience is what sets the store apart. The staff are avid skiers and they bring this fervor for snow sport to work with them. It’s their job to stay on top of the latest equipment advancements, trends and fashions and then pass this on to their customers. Offering services like boot fitting, private viewings, personal shopping and access to exclusive events CAN-SKI offers a

special buying experience that can’t be found anywhere else in resort. This winter the CAN-SKI team is adding two new locations - The Fairmont Chateau Whistler and The Westin Resort and Spa. The Fairmont location will focus on après apparel and unique skiwear brands, like Fusalp. After listening to their customers they’re applying the same passion they have for skiwear to fashion items that feel and look good after a day well spent on the hill. With tailored denims, woven shirts, and footwear designed to both function and flatter, they’re proud to bring a new array of clothing options to their customers that have been picked with the same unflinching dedication to quality they’re trusted for.

Welcome to the top of our world.

MOUNTAIN MAKERS

Doug MacFarlane Mountain Manager

off a critical calendar of commitments that have to be kept on track so that the mountains can operate to their full potential. With an army of groomers, snow makers and patrol it’s his early morning communication that sets the mountain in motion.

When Doug MacFarlane washed dishes at Grouse Mountain to fuel his ski obsession he never dreamed that 37 years later he’d be managing one of the world’s most prestigious ski resorts – Whistler Blackcomb. Doug has certainly done his time on the mountains working as a lift operator, ski patroller, and safety manager before entering his current role as mountain manager. Each day he’s challenged with the tough decisions that keep the ski hill running. It’s his job to manage his team in a way that gets the most terrain open and ready for guests each and every day, which is hard to do when working closely with the fickleness of Mother Nature. His favorite time of year is October through to December when the team is constructing the ski area. He works

“I work on my skis,” says Doug. “You have to be outside to fully understand the challenges. It takes time to know the mountain and a lifetime to learn the curve balls it’s going to throw at you and how best to hit them out of the park.” Doug’s job is intense, with a lot riding on his judgment of the weather and its effect on the terrain. His three sons ground him and in his spare time he can be found coaching and playing hockey, as well catching a few fish.

I’d never leave home without: Doug works in the elements so he needs his gear to do the same. The Dakine Rover Glove gauntlet style length, robust leather, GORE-TEX outer layer and wool lining make it the ideal glove for both protection and function. He’s also a fan of Oakley’s Airbrake goggles for their Switchlock technology that allows for fast and easy lens changing. In his words – you’re only as good as you can see – says it all. - 46 -

MOUNTAIN MAKERS

Kira Cailes Ski Patrol Supervisor

conductor of the patrol and big decisions often fall at her feet that need to be made quickly and correctly.

Kira Cailes day often starts with explosives in her backpack. Her ski patrol team are some of the first on the slopes and the last off them. It’s their job to keep everyone safe – a hard task over a 8,171 acre area. Kira is from the flat lands of Wisconsin. She didn’t start skiing until she was a teenager but as soon as she strapped her feet to those skis she didn’t take them off. Kira began to seek out the mountains starting in Colorado then came west – she’s now been in Whistler for 15-years. Starting at Whistler Kids teaching the minis, Kira moved on to volunteer for ski patrol on a friends suggestion. Suddenly Kira had found her place – this is what she was born to do. Ski patrol is a very dynamic job and no day is the same. It involves an incredible amount of problem solving and the ability to work within a large team that needs to coordinate its efforts to make sure people are safe. As a supervisor Kira is the

The morning starts with a meeting with the forecasters to learn how the weather is effecting operations. Then each patrol is assigned an area, which they make safe using explosives, ski cutting, and signage. Then it’s time to invite the public in. Responders are called to people in distress throughout the day and decisions are made and relayed as to how they’re going to tackle the individual situations. The people are the most challenging and motivating aspect for Kira, keeping everyone working together is key everything else is icing on the cake. Watching the sunrise is Kira’s favourite part of the day and being out in 100-kilometre per hour winds when it’s wild and raw still gives Kira goose bumps.

I’d never leave home without: Kira’s days are filled with jobs that require the use of her hands, and understandably they need to be warm. She chooses the Hestra Heli 3-Finger Gloves which keep her fingers toasty like they would be in mittens, yet still provide enough dexterity to do the manual tasks her role demands. - 47 -

MOUNTAIN MAKERS

Adam Francis

Assistant Slope Grooming Manager Originally from Fredericton, New Brunswick, Adam Francis has had an affinity with the snow since he was a toddler and to this day he’s still playing with it. After 25-years with Whistler Blackcomb he now assists in managing over 75-people who battle the elements to bring us some of the smoothest corduroy skiing in the world. His grooming career started on the midnight shift where he’d blast out the Grateful Dead whilst helping groom 1,300 acres per night. A lone wolf on the mountain the job of a groomer is often quite solitary, the only interaction with the other “wolves” spread over the terrain is a two-way radio. The fact that Adam was inside a warm cat,

music blaring while he beat back the storms to get the mountain open kept him charging on. Now Adam helps to manage these lone wolves, and runs quality assessment checks of the grooming. Working with ski patrol, risk management, fleet maintenance, lift operations and snow making – his intricate grooming patterns are integral to the overall picture of running the mountain. When Adam rides the lifts he asks skiers about their experience on the runs and gets a sense of pride when he’s consistently told that his team produce a superior product. When he thinks back to his days in the snowcat, his favourite area was the high alpine of 7th Heaven, where he would look down at the shining lights of the village. He loves his job because he and his team are the first to know if it’s going to be an epic ski day – which skier wouldn’t like that insider knowledge.

I’d never leave home without: When a snowcat fell off a trail just near the Peak Chair, Adam battled winds of 100-kilometres per hour, working for hours to recover the cat. He’s ever thankful for his Arc’Teryx Atom LT Hoody in situations like this. With an insulating layer it’s thin and light with great flexibility, which helps when you’re faced with the full gamut of conditions on the mountain. - 48 -

MOUNTAIN MAKERS

Christie Barbour Lift Operations Supervisor

Christie Barbour went from the T-bars and button lifts of her home ski hill of Glenshee, Scotland to helping manage 37 high powered lifts in Whistler, Canada with an hourly capacity of 67,307 skiers. With a degree in Marine Biology it’s not immediately apparent how or why Christie is now an integral part of the Whistler Blackcomb Lift Operations team. However, if you ever speak to her it becomes immediately clear – a passion for the mountains is what has made Whistler home for this Scot who now leads a team of over 200 “lifties”. Fueled by Marmite on toast, Christie’s day starts early with a morning meeting and then a snowmobile ride up to her “section” of the mountain, which includes the Harmony, Symphony, Emerald and PEAK 2 PEAK chair lifts. After heavy snowfall it’s her job to engage her team

to begin digging out the entrance areas to the lifts. “It’s like working with a huge family,” says Christie. “We’re all in the trenches together, doing what we can to make it fun and safe for our guests - that’s what I love.” She finds great satisfaction in seeing what her team can accomplish, and that their success means that more people can access some of the best skiing terrain in the world. With such a physical job Christie sleeps well at night, dreaming of flowing lift lines, smiling lifties, and happy skiers.

I’d never leave home without: As odd as it might sound for someone who spends their days in the snowy mountains, Christie feels the cold. She dresses herself head to toe in Icebreaker layers because of it’s breathability, warmth and softness.

CAN-SKI FEATURES

the

FOOT whisperer

Nino Ugrenovic is one of those lucky people that actually grew up on the slopes of Whistler. Since he could walk he could ski, and it didn’t take long until racing became a big part of his life. A knee injury at seventeen made him question continuing in the sport and he decided to follow a more academic path - although Whistler and it’s snow-filled sloped were never far from his mind.

- 74 -

CAN-SKI FEATURES

He studied sciences and genetics in Vancouver at the University of British Columbia, coming back home during holidays to work at the different ski retail. His family owns a store in Whistler so you could say that customer service runs in his blood as well as his passion for skiing. Nino decided to try optometry and spent a year in Montreal, but it wasn’t for him so he tackled business at Simon Fraser University closer to home. Even though he

loved his time in Montreal and Vancouver, Whistler is his home. “You can do whatever you want to do here. Ski in the morning, then head to Squamish for a round of golf and back up north to Pemberton for mountain biking – it really is one of the best places in the world to live.” For Nino, working in retail means he can interact with people and create relationships with skiers as passionate

about the mountains as he is. Now in his fifth-year at CAN-SKI he’s a senior boot fitter and trains other members of staff by delving into his 15-years of experience. The two main traits he goes by? Listening and patience. He explains that boot fitting is about reading the people you’re speaking to – what kind of skier are they? How many days during a ski season do they ski? How aggressive are they on the slopes?

Fusing this data with what he knows about the anatomy and kinetics of feet as well as keeping up on the latest in boot technology makes Nino an expert in his field. The ski industry is constantly developing and there are machines that can scan a foot and mold boot liners for each person. However, Nino, who skis almost every day of the week, has a passion for the sport and brings that love right into work machines will never be able to do that.

The

BOOT

Doctor

Ernie’s story starts with a pair of ill-fitting ski boots. He was sold not one, but two wrongly fitting pairs as a young man and the frustration of this experience made him passionate about not letting it happen to others. This promise set in motion a 30-year journey that led to him becoming known as “The Boot Doctor”.

Ernie Tysowski’s heart beats for the ski hill. In his thirties and forties he worked as a rep for Nordica, was the Tech Editor at Ski Canada magazine, and travelled the United States training and participating in boot fitting workshops. Eventually this led to a teaching role where he really got to grips with the biomechanics of the foot. Now Ernie spends a lot of his time passing this education onto his customers. As bipedal beings our feet are built for walking and running. In a ski boot however, our feet need stability to be able to apply pressure and turn a ski. Most people buy boots that are too big for them, and this severely impacts both their skiing ability and comfort levels. Ernie explains that it takes at least two days of skiing to break in a new boot, and that patience is needed. He takes the time to listen to his customers, looking for red patches on the foot and any rubbing on the shin to determine what’s going on with their feet and therefore what they need in a ski boot.

Ernie has owned his own stores on Vancouver Island and was even an estate agent for a short stint, however the snow filled slopes of Whistler were a seductive selling point when an opportunity came up to join the CAN-SKI team. Now in his sixties, Ernie is a highly sought after commodity with line-ups for his fitting services as soon as the snow starts to fly. “We sell ski boots, but what we’re really selling is comfort and performance,” says Ernie. “My mantra is to always have people’s best interests at heart – we want more people on the slopes having a good time – that’s what it’s all about.” When your work is your passion, you take away pain and let people loose on beautiful mountains there’s a satisfaction in what you do having a direct impact on the happiness of others. Ernie has held true to his promise over the years and you can find him at the Salomon Store at the base of Whistler Mountain – but be prepared to take a ticket and wait your turn with the good doctor.
