The Problems and Pleasures of Pageants

Beauty pageants have been questioned on whether or not their truly innocent. In some cases, the smiles are more likely than not phony. On the other hand, the abundance of memories and skills gained from these extravaganzas can create a positive effect on the child. On the negative side, pageants are found to be full of drama from both the parents and from the stress of the requirements, including eating disorders. They also lead to bad sportsmanship and the parent's desperate attempts to win, even at the risk of their own children. According to The Merriam Webster Dictionary (1899), the definition of a beauty contest, also called a pageant, is "an assemblage of girls or women at which judges select...show more content...

Excuses like this are unacceptable. No child should be given large amounts of caffeine and sugar, if any at all. Parents are setting them at risk for obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and several other diseases caused by bad health choices like this. On the other extreme, there are eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating. This is Cleo Glyde, a model who is now a healthy size 12. She used to struggle with eating disorders, which are very common amongst the fashion world. Cigarettes and willpower were her only two friends against food. She eventually became a stick, much like the rest of the models, all because of peer pressure to be skinny rather than her normal self. She did an interview for Marie Claire, a high fashion company. She went on to explain the different things she had witnessed, such as the Brazilian woman who collapsed like herself in a fashion show and a beautiful girl who starved herself to nothing but bones, her beauty withering down as her skin became paler and dark circles grew under her eyes. The cold world of fashion is no different than the world of beauty pageants. The same effects can happen, and can be devastating. What makes child beauty pageants even sadder is the fact that the children can't have a true childhood. They must spend their time practicing their moves, fixing their make–up and hair, practicing their smile, and trying on different dresses and outfits to parade

The Connotation Of Beauty

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Cliche but true. Beauty corporations, the media, and influential figures are the beholders. The beauty industry profits off the inadequacy of women and perpetuates unattainable beauty. In recent years, there has been a surge in plastic surgery, popularized by the Kardashian Decade (2007–2017) and other contributors. The perpetuation of these unrealistic ideals have serious implications on women of color, especially black women who deviate the most from European beauty standards. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, beauty is defined as " such as shape, colour, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight" (OED). Since the beginning of time, the connotation of beauty has changed drastically. In the Renaissance era (14th–16th century), ideal beautiful women were voluptuous; curvaceous beyond today's standards. These curvaceous bodies were the peak of sexiness. In Hollywood's Golden Age (1930–1950's), women showed more skin, more skin"dress to allure." Hair was feminine, makeup less drag, and pale skin was passГ©. This idea of beauty deeply contradicts the heroin chic look of the nineties. The coveted look featured an emaciated and androgynous look popularized by model icon Kate Moss. A startling contrast to the healthy and youthful look that Cindy Crawford is synonymous for. Oddly enough, the famous environmentally friendly slogan–reduce, reuse, recycle– applies here. Reduce. These corporations reduce women to a

Do beauty contests really serve a purpose in today's society? There are many different kinds of beauty contests these days. They are for both men and women and range from infants to adults in age. Beauty contests do not serve a purpose in today's society. The only thing that it is doing is putting in young girls' minds and a woman's that they have to be beautiful. We need to teach the younger generations that they are beautiful no matter what their size, or how they look. It is all about what is inside and the person that they are that makes them beautiful. We do not need to throw in the fashion and media worlds as well. This can cause many problems on children that age. Not only will it overwhelm them, but they might start to withdraw from the rest of the world as well as their family. This could also cause complications once they get older and start high school and start looking for a job. They might think that they are better than everyone else, so other people might not want to be their friends. What is this going to do to them then? They will wonder why people do not like them or want to hang out with them. The following graph shows how many people think child beauty pageants are wrong and should be banned for the safety of the children competing in them.

The Toddlers and Tiaras, and Little Miss Perfect are popular reality TV shows that features young girls the real hardship and obstacles from their mother's pressure or preparation for the pageant. They are ages from 1 to 12 years old, with main goal of winning and get the tiara and money or ribbon or teddy bears. Generally, the parents of these young girls believe and make decision that the beauty pageant is okay. Pageants, particularly those designed for younger children, focus primarily on appearance, attire, and perceived "cuteness." Parents of these little girls train them, plastering their natural beauty by using spray tanners, hair extensions and thick makeups. In addition, some little girls lose their teeth as a natural process of growing up, so parents will add fake teeth to replace the ones that have been lost. Therefore, the result is an unnatural appearance of what a little girl should look like. A child 's innocence is broken with fake smiles, false eyelashes, and polished appearances. Argumentative Essay On Beauty Pageants

Beauty Pageants With all of the fake teeth, nails, hair, eyelashes, overkill of makeup, and spray tans how can a beauty pageant truly showcase beauty if everything that makes up the contestants is bogus? A beauty pageant by definition is a competition in which people judge a group of women or girls and decide which one is the most beautiful. The standards by which this so called beauty is judged can vary depending on the level of the pageant but the most common categories are swimsuit, talent, evening gown, and the question and answer portion. Particularly troubling in this culture of beauty pageants is the early age in which the grooming for these contest begins. The majority of the young women that grace the pageant stage as adults typically began preparing for the pageant life soon after they began to walk.

Toddlers and Tiaras is a reality TV show that takes you behind the scenes of the competitive world of child beauty pageants. On an episode of Toddlers and Tiaras a mother gives her 4 years old daughter fake breasts, padded rear–end, and forces the child to endure the agonizing beauty ritual of having her eyebrows waxed and tweezed. This episode shows that in beauty pageants, children's ages are not being respected. These child pageant contestants can range from the age of 2 to 17 and there are even a few for children under 2. The prize for winning these contest usually include a title, crown, and a monetary prize. Just like the adult pageants, these contest

Putting a Stop to Children's Beauty Pageants

Imagine seeing a little girl, no older than eight, walk on stage with her beautiful, blonde hair curled so perfectly behind her, her teeth as white and flawless as those seen on dental commercials, and an impeccable mound of makeup caked on her face making her appear to be in her early twenties. She is wearing the most stunning pink, shimmery dress that has been tailor made to fit every detail of her body. The reaction of most people is, wow she is a very beautiful young girl, but what most people do not realize is that behind that beautiful little girl is a young child who does not get to live a normal life like the average eight–year–old. There is no going to the park and swinging so high that she gets butterflies in her stomach or hanging out with friends and playing with dolls. Instead, it is long, countless hours of rehearsals and dress fittings, hair and makeup, and time spent in a tanning salon to create the perfect golden skin color. Children beauty pageants should be banned because of the sexualization of young girls, risk of mental and health problems, no time to just be a kid, and the sole factor that these kids are too young and unknowledgeable to say no. There is an average of 5,000 beauty pageants a year with over two million contestants who sign up to participate. "Toddlers and Tiaras" is a show on TLC that first aired in 2009 and is dedicated to the viewing of child beauty pageants. The show shadows the process of getting ready and the performance of the three young girls in the contest (Padmore, 2016). The ages of the girls range from only a couple months old to young girls of around fourteen or fifteen–years–old. The juvenile individuals were pictured wearing skimpy little outfits including bikinis and short shorts with a crop top shirt. The show had an average of 1.3 million viewers every week (Padmore, 2016). That is 1.3 million people, including men and child rapists, watching these little girls wearing little or next to nothing dance around the stage. Speaking from a personal standpoint, I have watched "Toddlers and Tiaras" and have witnessed a children's beauty pageant in person. What I saw was something I could never forget. I watched

Persuasive Speech On Beauty Pageants

Beauty pageants, competitions judged mainly on a contestant's physical beauty, introduce the question if they adversely affect a child's development. The first Miss America pageant, held in 1921, started the modern beauty pageant era that exists today. However, current beauty pageants differ greatly from the first ones held 93 years ago. Many of the pageants called "high–glitz" pageants consist of the competitors wearing a lot makeup, big hair, spray tans, fake teeth called "flippers", expensive clothes, and many more things that some say make the children look unnatural. Child beauty pageants have affected many people differently, good and bad. Advocates of beauty pageants say that contestants develop confidence and self esteem. However, critics claim that beauty competitions teach young girls to gather their self–worth based on their appearance and promote an unrealistic expectation of beauty. This dilemma correlates with Henrietta Lacks' situation told in the novel The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Proponents of beauty pageants argue that contestants can develop self esteem and confidence, pageants can open the doors for talent career opportunities, and pageants can help get contestants into the modeling business. Fans of pageants point to the poise, presence and confidence that participants (both girls and boys) gain, as well as the parent–child bonding. To compete, contestants learn to walk slowly and gracefully, and speak with poise. This can build the child's

Beauty Has No Limits Of Beauty

Beauty has no limits because it is undefined; it is something one has to feel within one's own being. Everyone is beautiful in their own way; one does not need a beauty pageant to determine that. Children desire to be seen as "pretty" but who makes the decision regarding to what "pretty means?! Being pretty is whatever one makes it; being pretty does not mean wearing makeup or having the best clothes. One can not quantify another's beauty, because in all reality, beauty is something we make up. There is no scale because beauty is infinite. The way that beauty is advertised either on television, magazines, or any source that gives the wrong mindset about one 's image. People think that having a body like Kim Kardashian is a proper goal to have, or either having the beauty of Angelina Jolie. Although, as a community have to realize that God has blessed everyone in their own way, no matter what one believe in or do not everyone is blessed. Competing in beauty pageants adversely affect a child's development because it deprives children from their childhood, forces them to look and act like adults, and gives the wrong message about beauty. Beauty pageants deprive children from their childhood because they take up a lot of time, and dedication, hardly leaving any time for a child to be a child. Beauty Concept Essay

Throughout history, mankind has promoted excellence through primitive rituals, community events, and collectively instilled ideals. Beauty pageants represent one of these efforts in their endeavor to define femininity and grace as well as ever–changing gender roles in society. While some believe beauty pageants to be harmless social events that provide educational and national advancement, spawn awareness for charitable causes, and encourage confidence, others suggest that such competitions confuse societal morals, exploit women, and instill insecurity in young girls worldwide. Since their conception, beauty pageants have ventured to better society and those who reside within it. Such pageants have helped in providing educational and...show more content...

In addition to providing educational advancement and support for charities, beauty pageants allegedly encourage a form of confidence in their participants. It has been said that these contests are, at their core, "competitions to select a queen function to define and distinguish females who have reached maturity" (Stoeltje). Laura Coleman, winner of Miss England 2008, has also argued controversy with her idea of such competitions "[empowering] women," as well as her claim that "appreciating beauty should not cause anger" ("Plea...London"). Miss America 1995 winner Heather Whitestone, deaf from birth, gained a remarkable and genuine confidence while also creating a new recognition of people with disabilities (Stoeltje). Though corruption eventually ensued, beauty pageants were created with and continue to spark, to a certain extent, the venture to better society and those who reside within it. Though beauty pageants were designed with beneficial intentions, society has manipulated the competitions with the asserted requirement to heighten one's self–esteem at another's expense. These contests confuse societal morals, offsetting the cultural balance. Though some pageants are means of fundraising, businesses and organizations frequently replicate such contests for profit as "young women [are] available

Essay about Beauty Pageants

Beauty pageants may seem the best way to increase confidence in young women and become their first step to success. They give women of many minority cultures a voice. Not only that, they also help increase their contacts, thus enabling more job opportunities in the fields of acting, business, music, and dance. This may all seem quite convincing but research shows otherwise. Beauty pageants are harmful not only to ordinary women but also to the entire society because they give women the feeling that they are inadequate and ugly, leading to dieting and eating disorders, cosmetic surgery, and has a larger effect on men's attitude towards women. Not only does it affect their physical appearance, it also leads to severs health problems and affects their fertility rate. Another consequence of this feeling of inadequacy among women is their decision to go under the knife. Cosmetic surgeries are becoming more and more common among today's female generation. A study found that "nearly 11.7 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the US in 2007 – which represents an increase of nearly 500% in the overall number of cosmetic procedures in the past ten years" (as cited in "Beauty At Any Cost", 2008, p. 3). In an attempt to modify their body shape and size, women undergo weight reduction procedures such as liposuction and stomach stapling which are quite harmful and sometimes fatal. Other cosmetic procedures include nose jobs, breast implants, eyelid surgery, facelifts, and Botox injections. Not only do these make stronger the perception of women that they were not perfect and needed to be corrected, they also carry with them the risk of permanent scarring and postoperative cognitive disorder. Also, since these procedures are quite costly, women with fewer resources become desperate and fall into debt traps, sell themselves as prostitutes, and go to any extent to gather resources needed to achieve that perfection. So is bearing all these pains and suffering for the sake of achieving that perfection really worth it? Yet another reason why beauty pageants are

It is awful because " these contests are primarily fuelled by adult fantasies of power and beauty... parents [are] failing to differentiate between their own desires or needs and those of their child" ( Meredith 2). It is absolutely disgusting that people think that it is acceptable to objectify women a certain way. By doing this we as a society are teaching young beautiful girls that they are not good or pretty enough, but we are also teaching them that everything in life is based upon one's appearance. An example of how pageants steal childhoods is Brooke Breedwell, who is a former pageant star. She said "pageants left her with stress, anxiety, and the feeling that she needed to be perfect all the time"( Lindsey 2). Children do not naturally grow up have these worries, these feelings are something that gradually take over their life, and build up until they become troubled and emotionally distraught. There is already a lot of pressure from the media and society to look a certain way, and beauty pageants, especially for young children competing, can greatly damage their self esteem and self worth. Almost all parents make their daughters wear makeup, fake eyelashes, fake teeth, get spray tans, etc... and by doing this parents are demonstrating to their children that physical appearance is what is important. Depression is a major problem found in many young girls due to insecurities. 75% of girls with low self–esteem reported engaging in negative activities like cutting, bullying, smoking, drinking, or disordered eating. Child beauty pageants are not as glamorous as they seem to be on television; they can cause young girls to develop serious illnesses because they feel the need to be better and be perfect. Because of the strong desire to be perfect, some resort to extremes to gain that approval. In beauty pageants they sometimes have talent portions and are not in all pageants. They are considered as a secondary component of the experience and scoring. Children are missing out on their normal childhoods and the parents have a lot to do with this mistake. Kids who participate in beauty pageants don't get a say unless their parents really hear them out. Beauty Competitions, or as some people call them Beauty pageants degrade women to mere objects. Such a competition is the exploitation of women by men and other women. If the beauty competition was based on skill or ability, that would be fine. But nowadays people judge them for their outer appearance. For example, if five people were running in a race, only one will win. There is no doubt as to who ran faster. There is also no need for anyone to judge such competitions. Another may like a plump woman who is not a size one. One may also find long hair beautiful while another may liken long hair to that of a hideous witch. Beauty is purely subjective. No two persons can agree on what beauty is. That is why people get this mistaken at beauty pageants. They only see one beauty that every contestant must have. They have to have a certain height requirement, clear, radiant skin, perfect size breast and figure. This is one reason why pageants are very degrading towards women who may not fit in that category. They see that as an insult toward them. The women contemplate that the models they see in beauty pageants are the so called perfect body for this country, when in reality they are not. There are different types of beauty here. Some may like petite women others may like full–sized women. The old saying goes; beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In other words, someone or something that is considered attractive to one person may not necessarily appeal to another, as I said before. Beauty pageants have evolved over the years, after World War 2, shows were made to represent the ideal woman a feminine, wife like the keeper of the household. But now, pageants have different selection criteria. It all depends on how women are perceived in society. Traits can range from high and independent to soft and feminine. The winner of pageants will be recognized as successful and beautiful and will embody well being traits. An example of a show that operates in this manner would be the Miss America Pageant. It is a pageant in which winners represent the ideal woman. People are continually instigating on the rumor of shows are for the most beautiful people in the country. Though beauty plays an important part, the year and definition of an ideal woman in this age play a more significant role. In 1921, Margeret Gorman won the very first beauty pageant. Beauty Pageants Objectify Women

Many people (most of which are women believe that) beauty pageants objectify women . The definition of objectify is: to present as an object. What's really happening is more similar to glorification. The definition of glorification is: to make something or someone appear better than it actually is. Beauty pageants do not objectify women because the contestants are not judged solely on physical appearance, the contestants are being glorified not objectified and all contestants pass a screening to make sure they fulfill all criteria beforehand. One of the most common reasons that make beauty pageants objectifying is that the contestants are judged solely on their physical appearance. Many people believe that beauty pageants are objectifying since they often give young people the wrong definition of beauty, however it is just showing them a glorified version. Glorification is still a problem not it is not as bad as objectification. Many people believe thats it is objectifying for each contestant to undergo a screening before they enter to make sure that they fulfil all criteria beforehand, However this is to make sure that it is fair for all contestants. It is also to make they all meet the standards for the pageant. This is not objectification because it is mandatory for all contestants and if they contestants refuse to do the screening they will not be able to participate. Hopefully after reading this text one will know that beauty pageants do not objectify women. What people believe to be objectification is more likely to be a case of glorification. "True Beauty: Only on the Inside or Outside?" Beauty can be identified for anyone, or anything, and it can be quite difficult to decipher so easily; for, it is a concept of a personal preference to be found as impressive or pleasing. For decades, women have been competing in beauty pageants representing their state, country, or self, to be judged and ranked for physical features and even talent, personality, and intelligence. Eventually, beauty pageants have become more open based on who is eligible to compete, this being young girls atthe age of 10 and under. As parents have the right to sign up their kids to be apart of these pageants, debates have been surfacing whether or not beauty pageants are beneficial or abusive to children. For years, child beauty pageants have been challenged on if it is harmful or innocent to the contestants. They require each contestant to take part in different events regarding their social and mental skills, as well as, their talent; but, it also requires the interpretation of their appearance based on the judges own definition of beauty. Sponsoring for those against it, Laurie Patsalides concerned in her article claim these child pageants are to be over sexualizing girls in, "response to legitimate public concern [that] younger and younger children [are] being sexualized." The requirements can become stressful for girls as they assume they are not good enough to enter and compete. Since girls have been able to walk and talk, parents have taught them that the inside is what matters most; yet, they assign them into these competitions for them to focus on their outer beauty and how they carry themselves. People argue that for a child to be surrounded by judges critiquing their appearance, it will make a girl self–conscious from the discrimination of being compared, for her looks, to other girls her age. Therefore, Patsalides stated that the comprehensive society, "perpetuates [this situation by praising beauty] more than a girl's accomplishments and innate abilities." Beauty pageants are all about the visuals for the judges to have their attention focused on the best makeover, most bedazzled dress, and the capability of the perfectly represented little girl.
