NATIONAL PRESCRIPTION DRUG TAKE BACK DAY DHR/ASAP (24 OCT 13)
NATIONAL PRESCRIPTION DRUG TAKE BACK DAY
IMCOM SOLDIERS ~ FAMILIES ~ CIVILIANS We are THE ARMY’S HOME
•
Mission: This is a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) partnership program to collect /dispose of prescription medications. National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Since 2010, Drug Enforcement administration's (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day initiative has collected a total of 2.8 million pounds (1,409 tons) of unneeded medications, helping to prevent diversion, misuse, and abuse of the drugs. Held twice each year, once in spring and once in fall, the days offer safe and legal disposal of prescription and over-the-counter medications, including prescription controlled substance DEA coordinates with local and regional law enforcement agencies across the country to set up disposal sites during each Take-Back Day. During the sixth, and latest, National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on April 25-27, 2013, disposal sites collected twice the amount of unneeded and expired medications than the previous DEA Take-Back event in September 2012. More than 5,829 locations participated in the sixth Take-Back Day, and 742,497 pounds (371 tons) of unneeded medications were collected. The level of consumer participation in the event shows the continued need for a means of safe, legal disposal of unused medications.
•
Intent: To increase awareness of the dangers of outdated prescription medication, collect and properly dispose of unused, expired or unwanted prescription medications
•
Key Tasks: Coordination with DEA, DES, MEDCOM Pharmacy, Commissary to provide opportunities for drug turn-in.
•
End state: All Soldiers, Family Members, DA Civilians and Community will be given the opportunity reduce the amount of controlled substances that are improperly disposed of in the community.
